✨✧ VariousPeanut Butter Wolf Presents – Stones Throw Ten Years (plus bonus mix CD) ... CD
Stones Throw, 1990s/2000s. Used 2 CDs ... $4.99
A great 2CD set of some of the best underground hip hop, deep funk and hazy leftfield jazz groove of the past decade on Stones Throw – compiled by Peanut Butter Wolf from the first 10 years of releases put out by his mightily influential label – some of which is appearing on CD for the first time ever! The well chosen tracklist is a wonderful overview of the far-reaching, but still strangely connected sounds Stones Throw has gifted us with over the years. You get the work of relative superstar projects led by J Dilla & Madlib, the anything goes jazzy soul sounds from Aloe Blacc and Dudley Perkins, straighter hip hop from MED, atmospheric digital grooves from Kousik, hard hitting funky soul from Stark Reality and Co-Real Artists, and so much more! The first retrospective of what we hope will be more decades of Stones Throw to come! 25 tracks in disc 1: "The Red" by Jaylib, "In Your Area" by Peanut Butter Wolf feat Planet Asia, "Low Class Conspiracy" by Quasimoto, "America's Most Blunted" by Madvillain, "Two Can Win" by J Dilla, "Take Me" by Fabulous Souls, "What About You" by Co-Real Artists, "Move Pt 2" by Oh No feat J Dilla & Roc C, "The Payback" by Madlib, "Falling" by Dudley Perkins, "Sunrays" by Yesterdays New Quintet, "Arrive" by Aloe Blacc, "Whenimondamic" by Lootpack, "Comrades & Dreams" (PB Wolf mix) by Stark Reality and more! Disc 2 is a bangin' hour long mix set featuring many of the above mentioned titles – and more from the Stones Throw vault – spun by DJ J Rocc! CD

Beat Konducta (Madlib)Beat Konducta Vol 4 – Beat Konducta In India ... LP
Stones Throw, 2007. New Copy ... $16.99 17.98
The long awaited sides C & D in Madlib's incredible blend of Bombay soundtrack-styled funk, blunted Eastern beats, and all round stunning Middle Eastern accented hip hop instros! This time out Madlib, er, Beat Konducta is conducting beats, strings & things from India and/or otherwise East – but the way in which the beats bluntly thump is quintessential Madlib – you know it and love it from the first beat! 'Lib really breathes fresh life into this approach – going miles deeper than anyone out there doing the Bollywood-hip hop hybrid – coming up with a sound all his own. Amazing! "Get It Right", "More Rice", "Indian Bells", "Club Scene", "Duel", "Organ Stroll", "In The Cave", "Malfunction", "Victory", "Smoke Circle", "Raw Ground Wire", "New Bombay", "Shah Sound", "Another Getaway", and more. Jamael DeanBlack Space Tapes ... LP
Stones Throw, 2019. New Copy ... $16.99 17.99
Spiritual sounds from the west coast underground – and a set that's maybe got a few more avant moments than other records of this kind! Jamael Dean plays piano in a shifting landscape of musicians – one that features percussion and production from the great Carlos Nino, some strings from Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, alto from Devin Daniels, tenor and flute from Aaron Shaw, and drums from Tim Angulo. The tunes rise up in a bold spirit that's not afraid to step outside at some key moments, but also returns more to the cosmic flow of the tunes – maybe a bit like Alice Coltrane might get free at some points on her Impulse Records albums, but never lose sense of the message. The sound here is very different than just a straight Coltrane mode, though – as there are some keyboard moments, and a real shift in mood between each track on the set – especially when there are slight vocal contributions from Sharada Shashidar. Titles include "Akamara", "Adawa", "Kronos", "Olokun", and "Emi". LP, Vinyl record album

Dudley PerkinsA Lil' Light ... CD
Stones Throw, 2003. Used ... $5.99
A nice, moody hip hop/funk album from one of the deepest talents on the Stones Throw roster! Dudley came to underground hip hop fame as Declaime, but really stepped forward as a durable, innovative artist with the Dudley Perkins singles that have dropped thus far – and A Lil Light soundly delivers on that promise. It's all about mood – this may be the murkiest, most muddily funky thing Madlib has ever produced, with crackly, hissing beats, bass and samples. Dudley's vocals are about as far from the crooning NuSoul sound as you can get. He's grooves along with an improvised feel to the lyrics, loosely scatting in both a rolling deep bass and a soulful, nearly crying falsetto. The sound falls somewhere between the denser parts of D'Angelo's Voodoo and the spacier aspects of 70s soul and funk. Totally unique and satisfying – would you expect any less of Stones Throw? Tracks include "Money", the Sun Ra-inspired "Gotta Go", "You Really Know Me?", "Washedbrainsyndrome", "Flowers", "Just Think", "Yo' Soul", "Momma", "Lil' Black Boy" and more. CD

✨✧ Bruce HaackFarad Bruce Haack – The Electric Voice ... CD
Stones Throw, 1970s/Early 80s. Used ... $4.99
Amazing electric grooves from synth innovator Bruce Haack – whose pioneering use of analog synths and vocoder vocals in the service of great, if far out songcraft was pretty much unrivaled in the 70s and into the early 80s – the period in which this excellent compilation on Stones Throw highlights! Haack's earlier successes were children's music in the 60s, and one of the coolest aspects of his 70s recordings was how that somewhat bright-eyed and innocent sing-song-y approached moved into more surrealist, weirder realms on albums like Electric Lucifer, that album's lesser known, still quite brilliant sequel, and albums like Haackula and Bite. Choice cuts from those albums as well as rare singles are rounded up for Stones Throw's impeccably curated overview. The electric voice and synth errata brings an otherworldly vibe to catchy songs – and Haack's use of the vocoder was followed by so many others who would become household names, from Kraftwerk to Pink Floyd. Amazing stuff! 16 tracks in all: "Electric To Me Turn", "Incantation", "Rain Of Earth", "Ancient Mariner", "Man Kind", "Rita", "Lie Back", "Snow Job"m "The King", "Party Machine" and more. CD

Heliocentrics13 Degrees Of Reality ... LP
Now Again/Stones Throw, 2013. New Copy ... $19.99
If this is reality, lead us onward – as the set is a mindblowing batch of trippy psych-funk from The Heliocentrics – even more offbeat and experimental than before, in ways that make the combo the true heirs to the legacy first begun by Stark Reality! The album's definitely funky at the core, but it's also filled with loads of amazing sounds – instruments tuned weirdly, played weirdly, and produced weirdly – so that over the heavy drums, there's often lots of freaky, fuzzy bits and tripped-out sounds – in ways that make the record feel like some lost acid trip outtakes from the Westbound studios of the early 70s – or like some obscure funk band that dropped acid at Andy Warhol's loft! The packaging offers up a visual example of what your ears will be going through when you tune into the music – and titles include "Mysterious Ways", "Collateral Damage", "Black Sky", "Calabash", "Path Of The Black Sun", "Mr Owusu I Presume", "Eastern Begena", and loads of cool interlude tracks too. Now Again/Stones Throw, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $23.99 24.98
A massive exploration of the music of Kashmere Stage Band – the legendary Texas funk combo whose work has been pushed heavily over the years by Wax Poetics, Stones Throw, and many others! The set goes even deeper than any of the previous vinyl reissues of work by the group – and features some previously unreleased tracks, and alternate takes on their funkiest numbers! The Kashmere groove is incredible – blasting horns, scratchy guitars, and funky drums – all wrapped super-tight around a range of original material and some more familiar numbers – all recast here in super-heavy funk mode! 18 tracks in all: "All Praises", "Thank You", "Scorpio (extended)", "Headwiggle", "Do You Dig It Man", "Getting It Out Of My System", "Zero Point (parts 1 & 2)", "Boss City", "Burning Spear", "Take Five", "Keep Doing It" and more! Kiefer bringing the funky hip hop instrumentals and keyboard jazz realms together as brilliantly as ever! What stands out so strongly here as how well it works as both hip hop and jazz – with thick bass-lined headnodding beatcraft, to standout piano and analog synth solos, he shows a deft hand on both fronts and layers it all in a way that makes it work as 2 distinctive styles paired in perfect harmony, as a opposed to some kind of fusion. Madvillain (Madlib & MF Doom)Madvillainy ... CD
Stones Throw, 2004. New Copy ... $8.99 9.98
A Stones Throw sci-fi masterpiece – one that was destined for greatness from conception, but we're still pretty well blown away by the final product! MC Doom and beatmaster Madlib couldn't be better suited for a collaboration. As much as we've dug the best of Doom's material of the last couple years, he's always needed a good editor – and Madlib brings nothing but the best sci-fi sound collages, scratches, and titanically driving funky beats – the grooved out 70s side of 'Lib's personality is wisely given a powder, while in the company of a vocal presence that's as insane as Doom. When it's not so pounding, the sound drops into the kinda gloomy, murky crackle of earliest Wu Tang. This is easily the best album of its kind since Dr. Octagon tore the flood gates open. Essential!!! "The Illest Villains", "Accordian", "Bistro", "Raid" feat Medaphoar, "America's Most Blunted", "Rainbows", "Curls", "Money Folder", "Hardcore Hustle","Fancy Clown", "Supervillain", "All Caps", "Rhinestone Cowboy" and more. As impressive a blend of compelling beatcraft and moody atmposphere as anything he's done to date. NxWorries (Anderson Paak & Knxwledge)Yes Lawd! ... CD
Stones Throw, 2016. Used ... $7.99
Anderson .Paak and Knxwledge's full length debut as a duo – and the most triumphant Stones Throw record in years! To this (still early) point in young .Paak's career, his voice has already proved to be a prime vessel for natural grit and mood, if not gamechanger songwriting, best paired with crackling, funk-steeped hip hop soul production. That's the case whether he's producing himself, working with a giant like Dr. Dre, or paired as he is here with Knxledge. Knx's production is a perfect backdrop – beats out front in the mix, classic Cali sample funk and soul framing the vocals – with a lingering haze holding it all together amazingly well! Intentional or not, Yes Lawd channels earlier Stones Throw classic LPs like Jaylib and Madvillain in the way it pairs distinctive contemporary talents for a joint duo effort, and after .Paak's solo shot Malibu, it's his second potential classic in a single year! Includes "Livvin", "Wngs", "What More Can I Say", "Kutless", "Lyk Dis", "Can't Stop", "Get Bigger", "Scared Money", "Suede", "Starlite", "Sidepiece", "Jodi", "Link Up", "Another Time", "Fkku" and more. Stones Throw, 2020. New Copy ... $16.99 17.99
Nothing too sleazy here – as the music has a laidback vibe that never comes on too strong – and which instead has this gently soulful flow of keyboards, electronics, guitars, and some occasional acoustic bits on violin, piano, and even a bit of glass! The work is maybe a bit more understated than some of the other records on Stones Throw in recent years, but shares a similar Cali soul spirit – maybe more subtle, even when there's a bit of vocals, which are usually processed down into the grooves – delivered on a few of the album's tracks by KerenDun, Iogi, and Jenny Penkin. Titles include "Up In Flames", "Aura Sight", "Earth Talk", "Heartway", "Song For Spirit Flights", "Pre Memory Circle", and "Moon Hike". LP, Vinyl record album

Sudan ArchivesAthena (bronze marble vinyl pressing) ... LP
Stones Throw, 2019. New Copy ... $18.99 19.99
A great full length album from Sudan Archives – an artist whose name is a bit misleading – as there's nothing Sudanese or archival in her sound! But the vibe of the record is maybe captured by the image on the cover – as the music all features violin, but in a contemporary soul setting that's also blended with her vocals – set to backings that are crispy and cosmic, and which maybe live up to the best sort of future soul music we were hearing from the Stones Throw label over a decade ago! Yet the violin really changes things up – almost making a 4AD take on soul music at times, although with an overall style that's a lot more contemporary Cali than vintage London – on titles that include "Did You Know", "Iceland Moss", "Coming Up", "House Of Open Tuning", "Limitless", "Stuck", Honey", "Ballet Of The Unhatched Twins", "Down On Me", and "Pelicans In The Summer". We weren't certain whether this dope little compilation qualified as a soundtrack or not, but we are certain it might as well be considered THE soundtrack to the first half of the oughties, with the cream of the Stones Throw stable lacing this collabo with the Adult Swim network with pure niceness start to finish. As you would expect, all flavors of the blunted beat scene make an appearance on this sweet little collection, guaranteed to get you open whether you're looking for deep, dirty funk, heavy leftfield hip hop, neo-grassic soul or contemporary sampler wizardry. Plus there's an entire live hip hop show on the bonus DVD, headlined by MF Doom and Madlib. 19 numbers in all on the CD, including "Take It Back" by Madlib, "None In Mind" by Koushik, "Nothing Like This" by J Dilla, "All I Know" by MED, "Wassup World?" by Dudley Perkins, "Raw Heat" by Percee P & Quasimoto, "No $ No Toke" by Jaylib, "Movin'" by Roc-D, "Dream(s)" by Gary Wilson, "Third Rock" by Pure Essence, "What Now" by Aloe Blacc, "Turned Around (PBW rmx)" by Baron Zen and "Nino's Deed" by the Young Jazz Rebels. ✨✧ J Dilla (Jay Dee)Donuts ... LP
Stones Throw, 2005. New Copy 2LP ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The classic batch of instrumentals from J Dilla – one that strongly transcends the hip hop genre – and perhaps his rawest, and most adventurous listening experience ever! The loopy soul samples, rich synth/electro shine, and thumping bass and soul beats that Dilla largely made his name on are laced throughout, but he also takes things a step into stranger territory – with spacey elements that buzz as much as they groove! The cuts are never less than soulful and funky, and never really steps into his peer Madlib's brand of the weeded out style, either. We love how raw this all feels, too! It's easily identifiable as the work of Jay Dee, but at the same time, wholly unpredictable! One of the best releases that Stone's Throw ever released – instrumental or vocal! Includes "Donuts (Intro & Outro)", "Workinonit", "Waves", "Light My Fire", "People", "Mash", "Airworks", "Lightworks", "Stepson Of The Clapper", "One Eleven", "Don't Cry", "Geek Down", "Thunder", "Gobstopper", "Walkinonit", "U-Love", "Last Donut Of The Night" and more. ✨✧ JaylibChampion Sound ... LP
Stones Throw, 2003. New Copy 2LP ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Damn! The MASSIVE collaborative album from the dynamic duo of Madlib and J Dilla! Essentially, Madlib handles the production on the even numbers in the set with Dilla on the vocals, and the roles are reversed on the odd numbers. Each producer does his own thing, as only he can do it – Madlib brings the funky sampler genius – and Dilla rocks the thumping Detroit hip hop soul crunch. A number of guest rhymers step to the mic, including Talib Kweli, Percee P, Frank-N-Dank & Guilty Simpson, and the flow is seamless. Not only was this one of the best hip hop albums of '03, it also has a dyed-in-the-wool classic production style, and it sounds just as great a few years later! So very highly recommended! Tracks include "L.A. To Detroit", "McNasty Filth" with Frank-n-Dank, "Nowadayz", "Champion Sound", "The Red", "Heavy", "Raw S*!t" with Kweli, "The Official", "The Heist", "The Mission", "React" with Quasimodo, "The Exclusive" with Percee P, "Survival Test", "Starz" and "No Games". Lord Quas returns for another batch of booming, mad-blunted hip hop – an even more sprawling, surreal ride than the Unseen LP! Quasimoto was and still is Madlib's outlet for his most cartoonishly eccentric tendencies – and he really lets 'em fly on this set! The Unseen LP had more strains of the smoky jazz vibe of 'Lib's more mature productions – buried underneath the wacky funk and Quas/'Lib's instantly identifiable, hilarious mouthbreather rhymes. This one keeps it surreal throughout – sort of a cross between Madvillain, Prince Paul and a Max Fleischer cartoon – with Melvin Van Peebles dropping in here and there! One of the best funky compilations ever! Now Again/Stones Throw, 1973. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Rare funk from the Indy scene of the early 70s – the long-overdue release of material recorded by a really hard-jamming, horn-heavy combo! Amnesty have a sound that's awash in the best large group influences of the time – a bit of Earth Wind & Fire, a bit of Parliament/Funkadelic, but also a grittier, more guitar-based groove at times too – one that rumbles heavily at the bottom of the rhythms, with a sound that's like Norman Whitfield-era Motown, taken to much greater extremes! There's actually a lot more Detroit going on in the work than Indy – but the horns also have a jazzier, more open-ended quality too – not just parts penned for simple funky rhythms, but ones that show some influence from the more righteous side of the jazz spectrum. The material was all recorded on two dates in 1973 – but only issued here for the first time – and together, the tracks are a great example of a hip group from the underground, really letting loose with a great sense of freedom. There's some vocals on the record, but almost more of a focus on the instrumentation overall – and titles include "Can I Help You", "Love Fades", "Trouble Will Remain", "We've Come A Long Way", "Liberty", "Mister President", "Free Your Mind", "We Have Love", and "Lord Help Me". Yet maybe the obscurity is always what makes Benny so great – as the songs here feel like lost AOR gems from a time when folks really knew how to make a record – but also sifted down to a core approach that never lets things get too overly-polished or commercial – kind of that modern love of classic modes that we also find in the music of Ed Motta, even though Ed's a very different singer overall. If you're expecting to hear familiar sounds of the continent, you'll be disappointed – but if you're ready for this amazing vision of a new global sonic landscape, then you'll really be blown away – as Sudan Archives weaves together the kind of cosmic currents you might expect from Stones Throw with lots of deep beats and basslines of her own creation – peppered occasionally with sounds from the Ghana visit, yet all fused into a new ball of sound that bristles and crackles with creative energy. Titles include "Beautiful Mistake", "Escape", "Pay Attention", "Mind Control", "Nont For Sale", and "Sink". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Oh NoExodus Into Unheard Rhythms – Made With The Music Of Galt MacDermot ... CD
Stones Throw, 2006. Used ... Out Of Stock
A landmark hip hop album from Stones Throw MC and producer Oh No – one that's assembled almost entirely of samples from the work of jazz funk pioneer Galt MacDermot – with a reverent roster of guest vocalists that include Pos of De La Soul, AG, Vast Aire, MED, Dudley Perkins, Frank N Dank and more! In a way, this is the first album of it's kind in the history of hip hop. The Stones Throw label has never made secret of just how deeply influenced they are by Galt's oeuvre – and this LP is not only a great show of respect to the composer, it's the best work Oh No's done to date. Fresh and funky all the way through! Titles include "Beware" feat Cali Agents, "Black" feat Wise Intelligent, "To Be An MC" feat K Jay, "Keep Tryin'" feat Roc C, "Know Better" feat Wordsworth, "Second Chance" feat Aloe Blacc, "Low Coastin'" feat AG, "Cut Session" feat DJ Romes, "Smile A Little Bit" feat Posdnuos, "Keep It Lit" feat MED & Wildchild, "In This" feat Murs, "Hank" feat LMNO, "Lights Out" feat Frank N Dank and more! ✨✧ ProphetWanna Be Your Man ... LP
Stones Throw, 2018. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
The hype sticker on this one might say it all – "First album in 34 years, still sounds like '84" – and that's definitely the spirit here, as overlooked soul artist Prophet serves up a host of sweet 80s keyboards and grooves! He's not alone, though – as Mndsgn is on board to help with all the instrumentation, songwriting, and production – allowing the sweetly light vocals of Prophet to shine even more, as he croons and grooves over tunes that are heavy on keyboards, and have lots of bassy touches on the funkier moments. Titles include "Wanna Be Your Man", "Party", "I Do Love", "Tonight", "Right On Time", "Dream", "Really Turn Me On", and "Ooo We Yeah". LP, Vinyl record album

Jazzman (UK), 2009. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
J-Rocc takes on Jazzman Records – the mighty mixer from Stones Throw, handling a host of rare funk and soul gems from previous Jazzman reissues! The set's very heavily mixed – so that J-Rocc's really going to town with the rare singles included – cutting them up, spinning them out, and really bringing fresh new flavors to the tunes – something you'll appreciate, even if you've got some of the original versions! There's no set list for the collection, but there's plenty of niceness throughout – and the whole thing has a very Stones Throw sort of feel – but with a Jazzman level of classic cuts for grounding. DionRuby Baby/Donna The Prima Donna ... CD
Columbia/Ace (UK), 1963. New Copy ... $14.99 19.99
A pair of Columbia Records classics from Dion – back to back on a single CD! First up is Ruby Baby – a solo debut by Dion DiMucci – working here away from his earlier Belmonts group, and really finding a way to sharpen both his vocals, and his approach to the music! Dion's really crafting his lead strongly on these tunes – emerging partly as a pop act, but also with some of the more sophisticated stylings that a singer like Bobby Darin was hitting as he aged past the teen set – even with slight jazz currents in the mix at times! The title cut was a huge hit for Dion – the classic "Ruby Baby" – and that gem sits here nicely alongside others that include "The End Of The World", "Fever", "The Loneliest Man In The World", "He'll Only Hurt You", "You're Nobody Til Somebody Loves You", "Gonna Make It Alone", and "Will Love Ever Come My Way". On Donna The Prima Donna, Dion really sounds great – stepping away from the straighter pop of his roots, and mixing in a bit of soul, and just a tiny current of the headier sounds he'd unlock later in the 60s! The production style is pop, but the material often goes far past that – into territory that definitely has more mature themes, but still delivered with that Dion DiMucci flair for swinging a lyric in just the right way! And as before, one of Dion's strongest suits is the way that he's able to bring in this subtle current of sadness, all while trying to shake it off with a catchy tune. Titles include "Donna The Prima Donna", "Flim Flam", "Oh Happy Days", "You're Mine", "I Can't Believe", "Be Careful Of The Stones That You Throw", "Troubled Mind", "This Little Girl Of Mine" and "Sweet Sweet Baby". Excellent reissue package – with great sound, and the usual Ace Records attention to notes and details! CD

✨✧ Freddie Gibbs & MadlibBandana ... CD
RCA, 2019. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Maybe the best Madlib-produced LP since the highest peaks of the prime Stones Throw era, and Freddie Gibbs is on fire throughout! Each one does what he does best here and ups the ante. 'Lib is focused on crackling soul beats and hazy funk – masterfully utilizing vintage and contemporary sample sources from Donny Hathaway and Syl Johnson to Kaidi Tatham and The Heliocentrics – delivering the right kind of gritty headnodding vibe without compromising on his distinctive style. Freddie Gibbs is uncompromisingly raw and fiercely focused, varying the speed of his flow when the mood strikes, so what sounds like it might be an uncommonly inspired freestyle one second rolls into the most dexterous lyricism for the next couple minutes. The cover and title might seem a bit trashy, but the music's much richer than they lead you to expect – a sensitively-crafted batch of instrumentals and vocal numbers that seem to tie together a contemporary Cali soul aesthetic with traces of the 80s underground from overseas! Some tunes almost feel as if cold wave elements have been warmed up to sunnier soul – but the vocals are always understated and somewhat processed – maybe somewhere in the Stones Throw or Innovative Leisure mode – but also a lot more personal and sensitive at times. Octave (Japan), Late 90s/Early 2000s/2004. Used ... $9.99
Sparely funky, yet heavily atmospheric hip hop productions from unsung titan Kankick – made up mostly of late 90s material – and it's right up with some of our favorite leftfield producers of the period! Kankicks was perhaps best known as a Lootpack affiliate around this time, and sure enough, it's the kind of thing that would have sounded right at home on Stones Throw in the label's infancy. This ain't baby stuff, though, and it's aging quite well! Raw beats laced by vinyl grit, occasional hazy vocals and trippy atmosphere to spare. Relatively little heard excellence from an unsung producer! Includes "The A-1 Sound", "Witness Truthful Mystics", "One Reason Why", "A Song For My Forefathers", "Look At That", "Amplified Dynastical", "Lady Slick" feat Unorthodox, "Unpredictable", "To All The Duck Rap Radio DJs", "FLS (Do You Like)", "Night Shine", "Oodles Of Ounces", "Aquarian Meditation", "The Blowfly" (Kancritic feat Medaphoar), "Dig The Transition", "Bread And A Rolls Royce" and more. A damn funky little album – and one of the best Stones Throw albums of the past 20 years! Connie Price & The Keystones are a modern group – but one who's steeped in all the older messed-up funky styles of their Stones Throw labelmates – even some of the offbeat psych and rock that the label has reissued from around the globe! There's a wonderfully tripped-out sound to their work – taking the core instrumentation of funky drums, choppy guitars, smoking keyboards, and soulful sax – and pushing it out with a Stark Reality-ish vibe that really makes the group stand out from the rest of the deep funk underground! The album's a brilliant debut that we'll be digging for years – and it also feature appearances by Malcolm Catto, and members of Funk Inc, Poets Of Rhythm, and The LA Carnival! Titles include "Sticks & Stones", "Sucker Punch", "The Buzzard", "Double Dutch", "Wild Flowers", "Tall Dry Grass", "Fuzz & Them", and "The Shadows Of Leaves". Joe TexHe Who Is Without Funk Cast The First Stone ... CD
Dial/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1978. New Copy ... About February 12, 2020 (delayed)
Joe Tex is definitely not without funk on this sweet little set – a smoking TK Records session that carries strongly from the vibe of his "I Gotcha" years! Longtime producer Buddy Killen is still on deck to keep everything tight and right – a mix of Joe's southern soul roots with some sharper elements of the 70s – served up here at a level that may well be one of the most perfect blends of all the great Joe Tex styles – even though the record itself has kind of a hokey title and cover (which seems to have a bunch of white folks, obviously "without funk", ready to throw stones at Tex!) Joe wrote all the lyrics himself, and the few mellow moments have a wonderfully heartbreaking quality. An overdue look at the lost Lamp Records – a crucially important indie soul label on the Indy scene of the late 60s and early 70s – a company that was never as big as Chess or Motown, but did a similar job of documenting its city's musical scene! Indianapolis was always a very diverse city – and gave the world bigger funk and jazz luminaries like Wes Montgomery or Funk Inc – but like most cities of its size, Indy also sported a rich underground of great singers and bands who were really trying to make it big – all really great artists who were captured in deep detail by the Lamp Records label! Now Again/Stones Throw have given us a slight look at this scene in the past – most notably with their reissues of work by Ebony Rhythm Band – but this is the first really detailed dig into the label, with a huge amount of material that's only ever circulated on very rare original pressings. The work is a great mix of group soul, funky cuts, sweet harmony, and even a bit of gospel – and titles on this 2LP set include "Somebody Please" by The Vanguards, "You Made My Everything" by Words Of Wisdom Truth Revue, "Hum Bug" by Diplomatics, "I Didn't Know" by Funder Cooper, "Go To Work" by Revolution Compared To What, "Everybody Who Wants To Be Free" by Amnesty, "Can I Call You Baby" by The Pearls, "Take Me" by Fabulous Souls, "High On The Hill" by Squidd, "Soul Heart Transplant" by Ebony Rhythm Band, "See The Lord" by Mighty Indiana Travelers, "Huh" by Tony Black & Revolution Compared To What, "I'm Only Human" by Embers, "It Swells My Desire" by The PHDs, and "More Than I Can Stand" by Moonlighters.
