✨✧ Stan Getz/Jimmy RowlesPeacocks ... CD
Sony, 1975. Used ... Out Of Stock
A real standout in the Stan Getz catalog of the 70s – a session of mostly spare duets with pianist Jimmy Rowles, done in a way that really breaks from the format of Stan's other work of the time! Rowles here has a raspy warmth that brings out new voicings in Getz's tenor – an earthiness that comes through especially well on the half of the album that features only Stan and Jimmy playing together alone, but which still shines on the few other tracks that feature the bass of Buster Williams and drums of Elvin Jones expanding the group. 2 short tracks feature only solo piano, and Rowles also sings on a number of the album's tracks, in that breathy mode of his that rarely got captured this well on record – and one other track features Jon Hendricks leading a vocal quartet through a rendition of "The Chess Players". Other titles include "It'll Never Be The Same", "Body & Soul", "What Am I Here For", "The Hour Of Parting", "The Peacocks", "Rose Marie", and "Serenade To Sweden". CD

Al Cohn & Jimmy RowlesHeavy Love (with bonus track) ... CD
Xanadu, 1977. New Copy ... $9.99 15.99
Lots of heavy love here – a wonderful sense of rapport between the great tenorist Al Cohn and piano genius Jimmy Rowles! Both musicians were still recording heavily at the time of this album, but the record seems to capture them in a really special space that still stands strongly on its own – a mode that's much more relaxes than some of the Pablo Records sessions of the time, and which has Cohn in an especially striking mode – really hitting these openly-blown, often-angular lines that are dripping with soul – more heart and feeling than we might normally expect from him, matched equally by Jimmy Rowles' wonderful phrasing on piano – very much here at the top shelf level he delivered with Stan Getz on The Peacocks album. Titles include "I Hadn't Anyone Till You", "Bar Talk", "These Foolish Things", "Them There Eyes", and "Sweet & Lovely". Features the bonus track "For All We Know". CD

Sony, Late 70s/Early 80s. Used 8 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Stan Getz on Columbia Records – a period that's filled with wonderful moments and lots of surprises – all of which are on this great little set! Folks normally think "Verve" when they think of Stan Getz – but his Columbia years have some wonderful elements too – as Getz was really stretching out, and doing some amazing things with his tenor – taking on Coltrane inspirations, moving into some freer fusion modes, and even going back to some of those great Brazilian and modal styles he explored at Verve in the 60s! This package is filled with great records – a number of which haven't been on CD in the US – and also some rare bonus material too! Titles include the electric Chick Corea grooves of Captain Marvel, the bossa-revival of The Best Of Two Worlds, the soaring sounds of The Master, the Jimmy Rowles piano of The Peacocks, the soulful Another World, the gentle Children Of The World, the rare dutch soundtrack Forest Eyes, and a Bonus Disc of rare live material from 1977 at Montreux, the 1979 Havana Jam, and a Carnegie Hall Woody Herman tribute! ✨✧ Stan GetzStan Getz & The Cool Sounds (LP sleeve edition) ... CD
Verve, Early/Mid 50s. Used ... Out Of Stock
An odd little album in the Stan Getz catalog of the 50s – not just because of the cheesy cover and title, but also because it features a range of unusual material recorded over a three year period with a variety of different players! Some of the dates here definitely fit the "cool sounds" title of the record – in that they feature Getz with the west coast lineup of Loy Levy on piano, Shelly Manne on drums, and Leroy Vinnegar on bass – heard more famously on Stan's West Coast album of the same time. But other sides feature a different grouping – with Jimmy Rowles on piano, Bobby Whitlock on bass, and Max Roach on drums – offering up a different side of the west coast altogether. And still others take things back to more of an east coast modern style – by featuring either Tony Fruscella on trumpet or Bob Brookmeyer on trombone, in groups with John Williams on piano. The mix of material makes for a nicely-rounded portrait of Getz's talents in the mid 50s years – and the album features 10 tracks that include "Nobody Else But Me", "Serenade In Blue", "Of Thee I Sing", "Love Is Here To Stay", "Blue Bells", "Roundup Time", "Rustic Hop", and "A Handful Of Stars". ✨✧ Stan GetzStan Getz Plays (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Verve/Essential Jazz (Spain), Early 50s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Pure genius from Stan Getz – a set that's got an understated brilliance from the cover and title right down to the music in the grooves – and maybe one of the best-ever pairings of the tenor of Getz with the guitar of Jimmy Raney! The pair work here in a hip combo with Duke Jordan on piano, Bill Crow on bass, and Frank Isola on drums – on a mellow set of short standards that includes "Hymn Of The Orient", "Stella By Starlight", "Thanks For The Memory", "Tis Autumn", and "You Turned The Tables On Me" – all played with an impeccable sense of tone, space, and rhythm – apparent even here in Getz's younger years! Essential Jazz reissue adds 6 bonus tracks featuring the same personnel, plus another 4 tracks recorded in 1954 with Jimmy Rowles, Bob Whitlock, and Max Roach. CD

Gerry Mulligan & Ben WebsterGerry Mulligan Meets Ben Webster ... CD
Verve, 1959. Used ... $1.99
Mulligan always sounds great next to a tenor – especially in the Verve series that has him teamed up with players like Johnny Hodges, Paul Desmond, or Stan Getz. This release, cut with Ben Webster upfront, is one of the best of that series – and features the pair blowing easily and soulfully on some long tracks with rhythm by Jimmy Rowles, Leroy Vinnegar, and Mel Lewis. Titles include "Go Home", "The Cat Walk", "Sunday", "Who's Got Rhythm", and "Tell Me When". CD
