Bill EvansYou Must Believe In Spring ... LP
Warner, 1977. Sealed ... $79.99
Wonderful late work from piano legend Bill Evans – a set that was recorded in 1977, but not issued until after his death in 1980 – at which point it became an instant essential in his catalog! As with so many of Bill's 70s recordings, the session benefits from the bass work of Eddie Gomez – rich, round, and warm – a perfect accompaniment for Evans' sometimes faltering piano work at the time – and a player that Evans was incredibly lucky to be working with during much of his later years. Elliot Zigmund is on drums, a beautifully sensitive player – and the set includes a sublime version of Michel Legrand's "You Must Believe In Spring", plus the tracks "Theme From Mash", "The Peacocks", "Sometime Ago", and "Gary's Theme". LP, Vinyl record album
(Early 80s issue, still sealed with a large, round ghost sticker spot.)

Rudolph JohnsonSpring Rain ... LP
Black Jazz/Real Gone, 1971. New Copy (reissue)... $12.99 23.99
One of the few albums ever cut by reedman Rudolph Johnson – a hell of a saxophonist, and one with a great ability to combine the spiritual with the searing – a bit like Joe Farrell at his CTI best, but not as freewheeling – nicely focused, and a little bit funky in all the right parts – in ways that make this album one of the real standouts on the legendary Black Jazz label! The groove is nice and hard, and plenty dark – with lots of sharp edges around the offbeat rhythms, and a "bite" that makes the album one of the heaviest titles on the label. Other players include John Barnes on piano, Reggie Johnson on bass, and Ray Pounds on drums – and titles include the great "Diswa", which has sort of of a tight jazzy hip hop sample feel to it, plus "Mr TJ", "Little Daphne", and "Spring Rain". ✨✧ Gerry MulliganSpring Is Sprung ... LP
Philips, 1962. Very Good+ ... $14.99
A great little session by Gerry – hidden amidst his 60s work, and a no-nonsense, gimmick-free album with some really great playing overall! The group on the set includes Bob Brookmeyer on valve trombone as well as piano, which he even plays in duet with Gerry on one track – and the quartet's approach is nicely relaxed, but still firmly exploratory, as they make their way through a number of strong original tunes that include "Subterranean Blues", "Spring Is Sprung", "Open Country", and "Four For Three". LP, Vinyl record album

Olivier Peters Quartet featuring Joan JohnsonWings Of Spring ... LP
Village (Germany), 1980. Very Good+ ... $9.99 14.99
A sweet little album of breezy jazz – with vocals by Joan Johnson on a number of tracks, and that modally grooving post-MPS sound that still resonated strongly on a few German labels at the end of the 70s! The real star here is Peters, whose work on saxes is great – kind of pinched in tone, in a snaking way that bubbles soulfully out of the album's best tracks. Johnson's vocals are nice, too – but they come to their strongest point when really challenged by Peters reed work, and by the driving piano of Walter Norris, who's also in the group. Titles include "Kekay", "Mr Steve", "Wings Of Steve", "Morning Mist", and "Happy Endings". LP, Vinyl record album
(Japanese pressing, on Celeste. Cover has a light trace of an old sticker in one corner.)

Guido PistocchiSpring Time ... CD
Deja Vu (Italy), 2010. Used ... $9.99
A killer set from Italian trumpeter Guido Pistocchi – and one with a very specific old school vibe as well! Pistocchi's going for a 50s California jazz approach here, but one that's also focused on the contributions of Italian-American players Conte Candoli and Tony Fruscella – both of whom are referenced strongly in Guido's approach on his horn, and on the album's choice of tracks! Walter Ricci sings on a few numbers – echoing a bit of Chet Baker's old sound of the 50s – and other cuts are sparkling instrumentals, with Pistocchi on trumpet, Max Ionata on tenor, Gruno Cesselli on piano, Paolo Ghetti on bass, and Marcello Di Leonardo on drums. Title sinclude "Old Hat", "Macedonia", "Zizanie", "You Can't Go Home Again", "Some Day", and "I Can't Get Started". CD

One of the all-time great 60s albums from Blue Note – a seminal session from tenor legend Ike Quebec, cut in a warm, mellow style that's simply wonderful! Ike's working here with a quartet that includes organist Freddie Roach – a perfect match for the Quebec tone of the time – with a lean and soulful bottom sound on the Hammond that lets Ike soar on his solos over the top! The group plays a set of mellow standards, plus a few originals – all in the warm soulful vein that was Quebec's virtual domain at the time. Titles include "Lover Man", "A Light Reprieve", and "Easy – Don't Hurt". An incredible Blue Note release, and rare, too (we almost never see a vinyl copy) – reissued here with beautiful remastering! Ugly Things, 2024. New Copy ... $10.99 11.99
A great issue of one of the coolest, grooviest, most jam-packed music magazines you'll ever find – stuffed to the gills with all sorts of well-written and very long articles on overlooked artists from the past! There's a big cover feature on The Yardbirds – and the issue also includes equally long articles on The Paley Brothers, The Ascots, Subway Sect, and Novaks Kapelle – plus a very cool comparison of the 60s beat group scenes in Poland and Hungary – all with vintage images and photos in black and white. And we especially love the issue's great recounting of the history of west coast psych act The Moon and related Colours – always a bit of a musical mystery to us – in a huge issue that's got over 150 pages in all, and will keep you reading for weeks to come! In addition to a long cover feature on Joe, the issue also has articles on the International Anthem label, jazz spots in Tokyo, ESP Records, the scene in Lisbon, vibist Joel Ross, pianist Mal Waldron, and a rethinking of smooth jazz too! As with previous issues, the presentation is fantastic – more book-style than magazine – square bound, with lavish color photos and images throughout – and lots of other great features too! Magazine

✨✧ Tony WilliamsSpring ... CD
Blue Note, 1965. Used ... $6.99
Startling! This album is one of two that a young Tony Williams cut for Blue Note, back when he was just hitting the age of 20, and when he was already blowing the minds of masters like Jackie McLean (who first hired him) and Miles Davis (who stole him from Jackie for his own group!) with an approach to drumming that was freed from usual time constraints. Williams conception was so unique, other young modernists – like the album's Wayne Shorter and Sam Rivers on tenor, Herbie Hancock on piano, and Gary Peacock on bass – quickly benefited from his presence, as you'll hear in this amazing session that sounds very little like any other Blue Note release. Williams wrote all of the tracks, but the style is much freer than any sense of composition might imply – and the group is shaken up differently from track to track. Titles include "From Before", "Echo", and "Extras". CD

Ann Young & Yuji Ohno TrioAs Well Be Spring ... LP
Columbia/Lawson (Japan), 1975. New Copy (reissue)... $28.99 49.99
A lovely set of 70s jazz vocals – recorded by American singer Ann Young, with backing by a Japanese combo led by pianist Yuji Ohno! The sound is pretty darn soulful – tracks that range from modal groovers to mellow ballads, all sung by Ann with a really rich vocal approach, and backed up with lightly dancing notes that give the album a really classic feel. The whole thing reminds us a lot of some of the best Lorez Alexandria work from the 70s – with a similar talent for hitting strong notes, and working in some great bass next to the vocals. Titles include a jazz dancer version of "Speak Low", plus "Old Devil Moon", "Don't Explain", "I Only Have Eyes For You", "Autumn In New York", and "It Might As Well Be Spring". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousDollar Bill Y'All – Spring Records & The First Decade Of Hip Hop ... CD
Spring/BGP (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $12.99 18.99
An instant party in a single package – a set that brings together a whole host of rare singles from back in the day – all work that's almost an equal blend of old school funk and early hip hop! The work here comes from the Spring label and related Posse imprint – a company who were around on the New York scene to issue plenty of soul and funk during the 70s – then made the move into hip hop at the end of the decade, yet in a way that also brought some of their funky currents forward! Where other labels were maybe using a lean approach and more records as the basis for cuts, Spring already had access to some great groups to back up the MCs – and the result is a batch of funky cuts that are already primed for a party crowd in the South Bronx! As the 80s move in, the cuts use more beats and electro elements – yet that older ear for funk is still nicely in place, and really keeps things moving throughout. Titles include "Money (Dollar Bill Y'All) (long version)" by Jimmy Spicer, "Charley Says (Roller Boogie Baby)" by King Tim III, "The Beach (long vocal)" by Afrika & The Zulu Kings, "Go For What You Know" by The Bally Boys, "Tearin It Up" by D4, "Rockin It" by MC Flex & The Crew, "I'm Hot" by The Rangers, "Magic's Message" by Mr Magic, "To Whoever It May Concern" by DJ Hollywood, "Cars (Zulu club mix)" by Afrika & The Zulu Kings, and "King Tim III (Personality Jock)" by Fatback – a cut that some folks call the first-ever hip hop single! ✨✧ Jackie & RoySpring Can Really Hang You Up The Most (aka Jackie & Roy) ... CD
Black Lion/Storyville (UK), 1955. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the first albums ever from the team of Jackie Caine and Roy Kral – and one of the best, too! The album's got a relaxed, open-ended approach to jazz vocals that already carries all the hallmarks of the Jackie & Roy style – wordless scatting on some tunes, playful lyrical interplay on others, and a focus on Jackie's ballad talents on some of the gentler numbers – all wrapped up in small combo backing that's sensitive, creative, and modern – yet never in a way that overwhelms the vocals. It's hard to match the poise, class, and cleverness of this one – and the album easily set a new standard for vocal jazz in the 50s! Titles include a few great early tunes by Tommy Wolf – the songwriter who would become so important for the pair – and backing is by Roy on piano, Barney Kessel on guitar, Red Mitchell on bass, and Shelly Manne on drums. Titles include "Let's Take A Walk Around The Block", "You Smell So Good", "Listen Little Girl", "Spring Can Really Hang You Up The Most", "Bill's Bit", "Dahuud", "I Wish I Were In Love Again", and "Lover". ✨✧ Gerry MulliganGerry Mulligan Quartet – Complete Studio Recordings (Gerry Mulligan Quartet/Spring Is Sprung) ... CD
Verve/Lonehill (Spain), 1962. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Genius Gerry Mulligan from the 60s – 2 albums back to back on one CD! The first half of the set features the Gerry Mulligan Quartet album for Verve from 1962 – an understated gem that's one of Gerry's first in a run of extremely charming sessions from the early 60s! The album has Mulligan blowing in a format that's similar to 50s sides – a quartet with Bob Brookmeyer on trombone, Bill Crow on bass, and Gus Johnson on drums – but the overall sound is somehow a bit looser and more relaxed than the Mulligan of old – a more gently playful feel that seems to stem from some of Brookmeyer's own experiments of the time, and which has Gerry blowing with a tightness and punch we really like. Titles include "Piano Train", "Lost In The Stars", "I Know, Don't Know How", and "I Believe In You". Next up is material from the even-better Spring Is Sprung – a great little session hidden amidst Mulligan's 60s work, and a no-nonsense, gimmick-free album with some really great playing overall! Lastly, the CD adds in 2 tracks from a quartet with Mulligan and Chet Baker, recorded in 1957 – on "People Will Say We're In Love" and "Gee Baby Ain't I Good To You". CD

Ace (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A totally fresh take on French sounds of the late 60s – served up here with a sound that's as revolutionary as the image on the cover! This isn't the dreamy strings of familiar Paris in the Spring – but instead, the sound of change that happened in and around 1968 – as a whole new generation of younger French musicians, singers, artists, and intellectuals were really making themselves known in bold new ways! You'll recognize a few names here – like Serge Gainsbourg or Brigitte Fontaine – but the collection goes way beyond those bigger names, and features loads of obscure artists from the scene that will be a real revelation. The collection was done by the same Saint Etienne team that gave us the excellent English Weather and Songs For The Carnegie Deli compilations on Ace – and titles include "L'Elu" by Ilous & Decuyper, "La Metaphore" by Jacques Dutronc, "Looking For You" by Nin Ferrer, "Chanson D'Un Jour D'Hiver" by Cortex, "Couleurs" by Leonie, "Leslie Simone" by William Sheller, "Litanies" by Triangle, "Baleines" by Francois De Roubaix, "Lileth" by Leonie, "Ystor" by Ys, "Chanson Pour Que Tu M'Aimes U Peu" by France Gall, "Le Victime" by Karl Heinz Schafer, "Les Adventures Extraordinaires D'Un Ballet De Banque" by Bernard Lavilliers, "Helicoptere" by Mireille Darc, "Les Garde Violent Au Secours Du Roi (alt version)" by Jean Claude Vannier, and "La Chanson D'Helene" by Romy Schneider & Michel Piccoli. A tremendous collection of 70s soul – one of our favorite-ever compilations from the UK Kent label! The set focuses on the lesser-known gems of the Spring and Event labels – companies who were well-known for bigger hits by Joe Simon, Millie Jackson, and others – but who also cut some sublime singles in a modern soul mode, many of which were new discoveries to our ears before this CD! The package is really incredible – filled with 23 cuts that really opened our ears to the labels, and which do a fantastic job of blending mellow, sophisticated, and bits of southern soul in the 70s! Titles include "What Did I Do Wrong" by The Mayberry Movement, "You Didn't Love Me Anyhow" by Act One, "I Can't Believe You Love Me" by Lou Jackson, "House For Sale" by Millie Jackson, "Alakazam" by Sonny Ross, Time" by Don Williams & The Exchange, "There's Another In My Life" by Phillip Mitchell, "Can I Get A Witness" by Jackie Verdell, "C'Mon & Give It Up" by Clare Bathe, "Please Come Home" by Garland Green, "I'm The Other Half Of You" by Ray Godfrey, and "Lead Me On" by The Internationals. Warner, 1977. Used ... Out Of Stock
CD also features 3 previously unissued bonus tracks – "Without A Song", "All Of You", and "Freddie Freeloader". CD

Beautiful work from the always-great Benny Golson – a wonderfully understated quartet session that's filled with plenty of long tracks, and sublime solo work from Golson! Benny's performed in many settings over the years – all of which are great – but we're recently quite partial to his more relaxed and open sessions from this period – dates like this which show a newly reborn focus on the sound of his horn and his ability to improvised creatively over an extended period of time. There's a definite Dexter Gordon influence to the impulse – but Benny serves up the music with a fair bit more soul and lyrical imagination – working here with a group that includes Mulgrew Miller on piano, Rufus Reid on bass, and Tony Reedus on drums. The set list features Golson standards "Up Jumped Spring" and "Stable Mates" – as well as the tracks "Voyage", "Beautiful Love", and "Goodbye". CD

The album's a wonderful example of the way that CTI really pushed the boundaries of instrumental expression in the 70s – taking Laws wonderfully breathy work on flute, and mixing it with some well-crafted backings that also feature electric piano by Bob James, bass by Ron Carter, and percussion by Airto and Jack DeJohnette. The larger group is handled by Sebesky, who really brings some magic to the record – a sense of sound, space, and timing that's still a heck of a lot more mature and sophisticated than most instrumental recordings coming out today! A fantastic treasure from the South African jazz scene of the 60s – a record that's full of soul and spirit, and which draws enough from the piano of leader Chris Schilder as it does from the tenor of Winston Mankuku Ngozi! Nogzi's a player who's very much in the John Coltrane camp, but with a spirit that's all his own – a rich tone that reaches back to late 50s hardbop styles, but which gets a more fluid, modal expression here – alongside well-crafted lines from Schilder on piano, in a quintet with guitar from Garry Kriel, bass from Phillip Schilder, and drums from Gilbert Matthews. There's certainly a South African spirit in some of the rhythms, but the music itself is more in the righteous territory of late 60s Blue Note – like the most creative work from Lee Morgan or Hank Mobley – on titles that include "The Birds", "Look Up", "Before The Rain & After", "Spring", and "You Don't Know What Love Is". A great slice of work from the New York underground of the post-disco years – served up by a family of labels that had been making things happen through most of the 70s! The set focuses strongly on the singles issued by the Posse and Spring Records labels – the former a new offshoot of the latter, especially geared towards 12" singles that were strongly focused on both the new sounds of the clubs and the streets – including lots of electro, bass-heavy funk, hip hop-inspired grooves, and mabye even some elements that would soon point the way towards house music to come! A great little follow-up to one of our favorite compilations ever from Kent Records – a motherlode of under-discovered soul from 70s powerhouse Spring Records! Spring is best known for its big hits with Joe Simon during the decade – but at the same time, the label also issued countless great singles by lesser-known artists – great little gems that run the gamut from southern soul to heavy funk, harmony soul, and disco – all with a quality level that matches or beats most of the other indies of the time! This wonderful set brings together some of the best from those years – and includes work issued not only on Spring, but also on the related Event and Posse labels – served up here as a whopping 24-track package that's supported by great notes on all the music. Philips, 1974. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
One of our favorite singers and one of our favorite composers – brought together in a dream of a vocal jazz album! We've always loved the tunes that Michel Legrand penned for films of the 60s and 70s – as they've got a depth, sincerity, and jazziness that goes beyond most of his contemporaries – but they've also never sounded better than in the hands of vocalist Karin Krog and arranger Palle Mikkelborg, who both really deliver a unique twist on the Legrand sound! Mikkelborg's arrangements for the set are extremely beautiful – sometimes using funky backings, sometimes softer strings – but always getting the right balance between emotion and grooviness that Legrand brought to his original recordings of the work. And guitarist Philip Catherine plays some nicely complicated lines that electrify the tunes with a weird, moody feel – often "singing" alongside Karin's deeply icy vocals in a really wonderful way. The tracks are all taken at slightly longer readings than you might expect, which makes for even more room for creative invention – and titles include "Watch What Happens", "Ask Yourself Why", "I Will Wait For You", "Once Upon A Summertime", and "What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life". Wonderful work from a group who really live up to their name – and who manage to come up with a sound that's unlike any of the other jazzy club acts on the market! Metropolitan Jazz Affair is a great collaboration between Patchworks, keyboardist Benjamin Devigne, and a few other artists – working here in a mode that's got echoes of 70s funk, soul, and jazz – and possibly a slight undercurrent of contemporary club – but one that's relatively subtle overall. Most tunes have a fair bit of keyboards, mixed with trumpet, bass, and percussion – as well as vocals from Eric Duperray that often hit a sweetly soulful style – crackling a little like some lost soul vocalist from years back, but with a slight European inflection too. Some numbers hit a bit of the pulsating groove of other club jazz artists – but there's still a more song-based approach going on overall too – one that gives the album a tremendous amount of depth! The tracks are about 50/50 vocal and instrumental – and titles include "Fourmi Rouge", "Bird Of Spring", "Roaming", "Swagger", "Turned To Clay", "You Can Dig", "Sigh Of Dawn", "Day Dreaming", and "Find A Way". Players include Alex Foster on tenor, Jon Faddis on trumpet, Gordon Beck on piano, Richard Davis on guitar, and Joe Beck on guitar – all of whom get some nice space to state their cases as the album rolls on – on three long tracks that include "Bird & Bela In B", "Rite Of Spring", and "Sebastian's Tune". A fantastic look at the Spring Records label in New York – a company that had a few big crossover hits in the 70s, but also issued a lot more rare and obscure material over the years – with a long legacy that even hit the early years of the old school scene! One of Spring's great contributions was finding a way for fast funk groups to shift into a disco mode when the earliest years of the clubs got going – but there's also a lot more going on here too – including some great deep soul ballads, warm midtempo steppers, and cuts that point the way towards the modern soul generation on the rise. The package also features six never-issued cuts, alongside some well-chosen and overlooked Spring Records gems – all put together with the usual strong notes and excellent sound we love from Ace/Kent! Titles include "If We Get Caught I Don't Know You" by Prince Philip Mitchell, "Falling In Love" by Victor Tavares, "Save The Best For Me" by The Determinations, "Do You Feel Me" by Act I, "I'm The Other Half Of You" by Maxine Weldon, "If You Could Turn Into Me" by The Fatback Band, "Magic's In The Air" by Ronnie Walker, "Hold On" by Ray Godfrey, "If You Say You Love Me" by Us, "The Storm Is Passing Over" by Jackie Verdell, "Beauty" by The Joneses, "Kill The Monster" by Flower Shoppe, "I Ride Alone" by The Internationals, "Get Right" by Richard Barbary, "Daddy's Coming Home" by Prince Harold, and "Of Your Life" by Vernon Brown. A key album in the evolution of the Millie Jackson sound and style – as she leaves behind the weepy soul of earlier albums, and moves into the fierce, proud-stepping mode that would define the "bad girl" of later, raunchier years! In case you can't figure out where Millie's going with her bag, the title is emphasized by a photo of a toilet seat on the back cover – and Millie literally takes the sh*t out on the record – in a series of tunes that have a real bad-rapping approach. Production is by longtime associate Brad Shapiro, but the overall sound is sweetened nicely by David Van De Pitte – who adds in full strings and voices to emphasize the attitude behind the songs. Titles include "Go Out & Get Some", "Put Something Down On It", "He Wants To Hear The Words", "Here You Come Again", and a great version of Latimore's "Keep The Home Fire Burnin", complete with an additional rap on the subject, entitle "Logs & Thangs". ✨✧ Millie JacksonSoul For The Dancefloor ... CD
Spring/Kent (UK), 1970s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Upbeat soul from Millie Jackson – a massive batch of tunes that work perfectly for the dancefloor, but which still retain all the grittier edges of her best early years! Although Millie's probably best known for her weepy ballads of the 70s, she also pioneered a more upbeat style of southern soul too – a nicely grooving approach to the music that was almost the southern equivalent of grooves from Philly and New York at the time. The style's a great one for Jackson's bold, proud lyrical style – and this wonderful set really shows the best bad-stepping side of Millie's talents in the 70s. Most cuts are pulled from her years on the Spring label during the decade, and the set features a few rare versions and edits that make the package essential, even if you've got all the individual LPs! 22 tracks in all – including "If That Don't Turn You On", "All I Want Is A Fighting Chance", "House For Sale", "Somethin Bout Cha", "You Can't Stand The Thought Of Another Man Loving Me", "Love Doctor", "Put Something Down On It", "A Little Taste Of Outside Love", "Ask Me What You Want", "I Miss You Baby", "Letter Full Of Tears", "Fancy This", "Rising Cost Of Love", and "You Can't Turn Me Off In The Middle Of Turning Me On". ✨✧ Millie Jackson & Isaac HayesRoyal Rappin's ... LP
Polydor/Spring, 1979. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic update of earlier soul duo modes – served up here by two of the most badass soul singers of the 70s! The album's got the smooth flow of Isaac Hayes' late 70s work – a bit of clubby rhythms at times, some soaring orchestrations at others – all in a mode that opens up into tunes that allow plenty of vocal interplay between Millie and Ike – who beautifully balance their deep soul roots and growing shift into modern soul modes. Brad Shapiro and Millie produced – giving the album some of the flavors of Jackson's late 70s work on Spring – but the Isaac Hayes presence really makes the record his own, too – as if we could imagine anything less! Titles include "Sweet Music, Soft Lights, & You", "Do You Wanna Make Love", "If I Had My Way", "Love Changes", and "You Needed Me". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Busta JonesBusta Jones! ... LP
Spring, 1979/1980. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
This album seems to have been recorded between 1979 and 1980 in Boston, New York and at Sigma Sound in Philadelphia. Bass player and vocalist Busta Jones gives us a batch of songs that incorporate a lot of the early 80s pop sound – some robot/space sounds, some danceable numbers and one definite disco-y tune. Side two seems to have more to offer – some solid good pop songs. Jones wrote most of the songs and he does a good version of Stevie Wonder's "Just A Little Misunderstanding". Other tracks include "Superstar", "Impulse Reaction", "I Put A Rush On You", "Everybody's Dancing All Over The World", and "You Keep Making Me Hot". LP, Vinyl record album

Definitely the high point of the Fatback band's later career, after they'd abbreviated their name, and adopted a slicker sound. One of our favorite bottom heavy 80s jams, from the cusp of the era. 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ FatbackHot Box ... CD
Spring/Southbound (UK), 1980. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Man, it must have been something to hear this record blasting out of a boombox back in the old days – especially if it was the magenta-hued one on the cover! The groove here is strong and loud – plenty of bass and beats at the bottom, and even a few surprising early electro touches that really stand out and make the album something special. And as with other records from this time, Fatback also show their ballad skills on one number – "Come & Get the Love" – but it's the more jamming tracks we really love, and they include "Street Band", "Hot Box", "Love Spell", "Gotta Get My Hands On Some Money", and the fat 80s jam "Backstrokin". ✨✧ FatbackMan With The Band ... CD
Spring/Southbound (UK), 1977. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A key transitional record from Fatback – one that sits nicely between their earlier funk and later club years! The record clearly knows this aspect about itself – as side one is titled "Vintage – House Party", and features more longer-jamming takes on the grooves that group was beginning during their Event years – a tightening up of the rougher initial Fatback groove, with plenty of bass driving the bottom of the tracks and lots more guitar work over the top. Side two shifts the focus to the "Tasty – Disco Party" mode – a style that's not that different from the first, but which has some smoother touches overall. Great Fatback all around, and titles include "Funk Backin", "Master Booty", "The Man With The Band", "Mile High", "I Gotta Thing For You", "Midnight Freak", and "Zodiac Man". CD

Spring/Southbound (UK), 1983. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Fatback are very firmly in an 80s mode here – using a bit more keyboards, beats, and electro touches than before, but still staying true to their funky inspirations! The style's somewhat more contemporarily commercial than a few of the group's previous records – clearly trying for a hit on a few numbers – but the rhythms and production are still a lot more real than most other hitbound bands of the era, and we can more than forgive the group for the few added hooks they bring into a few of the tunes! Titles include "He's A Freak, Undercover", "I Found Lovin", "Wide Glide", and "Please Stay". CD

✨✧ Millie JacksonCaught Up (UK pressing – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Spring/Southbound (UK), 1974. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Seminal 70s southern soul from Millie Jackson – a record that's head and shoulders above most of what she recorded in later years! Before she got all naughty and raunchy, Millie Jackson was one of the best female soul singers to come out of the south – and this album's a work of understated brilliance that brings a new level of emotion and feeling to the music. The whole thing's conceived as a bit of a concept album – one in which Millie's a bit fragile at the start, due to unfulfilled love – then regains her confidence by confronting those around her, and eventually steps forth boldly as a proud, new woman. Jackson put together the record with producer Brad Shapiro – and the overall style is Muscle Shoals, but with a more sophisticated twist – thanks to inventive use of strings alongside the more standard soul rhythms. Highlights include a great remake of "If Loving You Is Wrong, I Don't Want To Be Right" (complete with a nice bit of spoken dialogue!) – plus "I'm Through Trying To Prove My Love To You", "It's Easy Going", "I'm Tired Of Hiding", "Summer (The First Time)", and the great "It's All Over But The Shouting". CD also features 4 bonus tracks – including alternate "live vocal" versions of "I'm Tired Of Hiding", "I'm Through Trying To Prove My Love To You", and "Feel Like Making Love" – and an instrumental called "A House For Sale" by The Muscle Shoals Swampers! ✨✧ Millie JacksonFeelin' Bitchy (UK pressing – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Spring/Southbound (UK), 1977. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Millie Jackson's feelin bitchy – and letting a whole new side of her talents show! After the sweet southern soul sound of her early recordings, the Jackson style takes a sharp shift here – letting a bitchier side show up more strongly, and really setting the tone for the next great chapter of her music! Some of the set still features the older style production work by Brad Shapiro – but that's also pushed out by a smoother more modern soul feel on most of the record – one that has Millie emerging with a lot more pride, presence, and power than ever – all-woman, and all in control! Titles include the 10 minute Latimore cut "All The Way Lover", which has a great monologue that would even make Latimore blush – plus the tracks "A Little Taste Of Outside Love", "Feelin Like A Woman", "Angel In Your Arms", and the great "If You're Not Back In Love By Monday". CD also features 3 bonus tracks – "Lovin Your Good Thing Away (alt vocal)", "Angel In Your Arms (alt vocal)", and "If You're Not Back In Love By Monday (alt vocal)". CD

✨✧ Millie JacksonIt Hurts So Good ... CD
Spring/Southbound, 1973. Used ... Out Of Stock
An excellent early album from Millie Jackson – recorded in a southern soul style in New York and Muscle Shoals, but a lot hipper than most of the rest of the female soul that was coming out of the south at the time! Millie was a bit different than the rest – as although she's got a tear running down her cheek on the cover, she can also be a real badass when she wants too – rapping hard and frankly about the ups and downs of love and live – often sticking to harder material, except for a few tear jerking ballads, and adds in a lot of humor and touches of the fierce sarcasm that would soon become her calling card in the soul business. Key producer Brad Shapiro is working with Millie here – Gary Byrd penned the leadoff cut "I Cry", and the other tracks include "Two Faced World", "Hypocrisy", "Good To The Very Last Drop", "Help Yourself", and "Now That You Got It".
