Don CherryDon Cherry Live In Ankara ... LP
Sonet/Trading Places (UK), 1969. New Copy (reissue)... $25.99 29.99
Excellent stuff – and one of Don Cherry's first global jazz experiments on record! The set is a super-hip concert performance recorded at the US Embassy in Turkey, featuring a band of eastern-flavored players that includes Okay Temiz on percussion, Selcuk Sun on bass, and Irfan Sumer on tenor. Tracks are shorter and a bit tighter than some of Cherry's other work from the early 70s – but they also have a strong amount of world influences, and the record is perhaps one of his greatest achievements at cross-breeding musical cultures. Tunes include "Gandalf's Travels", "St John & The Dragon", "Water Boy", "Kara Deniz", "Man On The Moon", and "Two Flutes". LP, Vinyl record album

Al Cohn & Zoot SimsMotoring Along ... CD
Sonet/Universal (Sweden), 1975. Used ... $18.99
The team of Al & Zoot are wonderfully reunited in this classic 70s session – an album that still crackles with all their best twin-tenor frontline styles, but which also has a more fluid, free, and easygoing feel than their work in the 50s! The rhythm session on the set features some great work by Horace Parlan on piano, giving the set a nice gutbuckety bottom, and making the whole thing come across with a lot more soul than you might expect. Titles include "Motoring Along", "Fallin", "What The World Needs Now", and "Stockholm LA". CD also features 3 bonus tracks too! CD
(Out of print 2004 pressing with 3 bonus tracks!)

✨✧ Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Stitt, Max Roach & OthersBop Session ... LP
Sonet, 1975. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A mid 70s reunion of some of the key figures in the early New York bop scene – all recorded here in great fidelity, and on tracks that run a lot longer than their initial 78rpm recordings! The lineup includes Dizzy on trumpet, Sonny Stitt on tenor, John Lewis and Hank Jones on piano, Percy Heath on bass, and Max Roach on drums – making a rare 70s appearance in a straight set like this. Tracks are all bop standards, played in versions that allow for plenty of solo space – and titles include "Confirmation", "Groovin High", "Lover Man", "All The Things You Are", and "Lady Bird". ✨✧ Don CherryTibet (aka Eternal Now) ... LP
Sonet/Picadilly, 1981. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
One of two great records that Cherry cut for the Sonet label while working in Sweden. The album features Cherry in the company of Swedish players like Bernt Rosengren, Agneta Arnstrom, and Bengt Berger – all of whom play in a very world jazz vibe, adding in lots of strange percussion, gongs, pianos, and other percussive instruments to the mix. Cherry even vocalizes a bit on one track, and he plays no trumpet at all on the recording – which shows an even greater commitment to exploring new modes of expression than you might expect. Titles include "Tibet", "Moving Pictures For The Ear", "Love Train", and "Gamla Stan – The Old Town By Night". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Art FarmerSleeping Bee ... CD
Sonet/Universal (Sweden), 1974. Used ... Out Of Stock
Wonderful mellowness recorded by Art during the 70s – a beautiful little session done in Stockholm with some really great touches! At the beginning, things start out in typical Farmer ballad mode, but as the album moves on, Sabu Martinez comes in with some added percussion – and the lineup of guitar, bass, and two drummers picks things up with a nice little pace. The whole thing hits its stride on the tune "Green Witch" – a track that has a slight Latin pulse on the bottom, and which almost threatens to go modal – but enjoys its skittish approach to percussion and the way it keeps things edgey! Other tracks include "Smiling Billy", "A Bitty Ditty", and "A Sleeping Bee". CD

✨✧ Tom PrehnAxiom 1 & 2 ... CD
Sonet/Corbett vs. Dempsey, 1963. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
One of the rarest free jazz albums of the European 60s scene – a set that was originally intended for release by Sonet Records, pressed up in test records for the musicians, then denied release because they felt that they'd already moved past the performance! Yet in the space of over 50 years, the music still sounds remarkably fresh – an early, striking, and stunning example of the way that the European avant jazz scene was not only overtaking the American one, but also providing the kind of energy that would be a key inspiration for artists like Albert Ayler or Cecil Taylor! Pianist Tom Prehn offers up a lot of the latter here – boundless piano lines that leap forward into space with a frenzied, yet tuneful approach – followed by tremendous tenor from Frits Krogh, a player we don't know at all – but who blows powerfully and soulfully, at a level that maybe even prefaces some of John Coltrane's more outside material to come. The rest of the group features Poul Ehlers on bass and Finn Slumstrup on drums – and the album features the full "Axiom (parts 1 & 2)" performance from the Sonet album – plus a more contemplative number titled "Percussive Anticipations", recorded by the same group in 1966, and appearing here for the first time ever! CD
(Beautiful package – with a heavy Japanese-style paper sleeve!)

Sonet (UK), 1976. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A 70s trad revival set from Ruby Braff – recorded in Sweden as part of the excellent Sonet catalog. The group on the set features Ruby on cornet, alongside Dick Katz on piano, Bucky Pizzarelli on guitar, Bill Crow on bass, and Connie Kay on drums. Tracks are short, and dominated nicely by Braff's classic solo style – and titles include "Love Lies", "Them There Eyes", "Swinging On A Star", "Same Old South", "Yesterdays", and "Why Was I Born". ✨✧ New York Contemporary FiveNew York Contemporary Five Vol 1 (Japanese pressing) ... LP
Sonet/Teichiku (Japan), 1963. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Incredible work from one of the greatest groups of the New York avant scene of the 60s – the legendary New York Contemporary Five, a combo that features Archie Shepp on tenor, John Tchicai on alto, Don Cherry on cornet, Don Moore on bass, and JC Moses on drums! This 1963 recording, originally done in Copenhagen, is one of the group's most lasting statements – a bold, bracing bit of jazz that seems to pick up energy from Ornette Coleman's dimming flame, prefacing Albert Ayler inferno to come, wrapped up with some of the sensitivity of Eric Dolphy in his final years – a record that rivals the best that any of those three players had to offer. Shepp's got an intensity that almost blows away his Impulse sides, and Tchicai has hardly ever sounded better – and even Cherry seems to be unlocking a whole new side of his spirit in the process of the recording! Titles include "Mick", "The Funeral", "When Will The Blues Leave", "Crepuscule With Nellie", "OC", and "Cisum". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Paris Reunion BandFrench Cooking ... LP
Sonet (UK), 1985. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Cooking is right! You might imagine by the mid 80s, these jazz greats were past their prime, but this set has Woody Shaw, Dizzy Reece & Johnny Griffin blowin' hard in a front line that also features Slide Hampton & Nathan Davis, all important American players who made their mark in the Paris scene of the 60s and 70s – hence the name – and they're brought together here for a festival tribute to Kenny Clarke, who was supposed to join them on the date. These studio sides were cut shortly thereafter and find the group working in a mode that recreates the unbridled creativity they had during their years in Paris – the groove is open-ended, in a soul bop mode that recalls the best work of Shaw, Hampton, and Davis from the 70s. . Includes "Klook's Theme", 'the Burner" & "Callitwatchawanna". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Sonny Stitt with Art Blakey & The Jazz MessengersIn Walked Sonny ... LP
Sonet, 1975. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
One of Sonny Stitt's best albums of straight jazz from the 70s – and an album that reunites him with Art Blakey, in their first meeting since the pair recorded in the early 60s for Impulse! Blakey's working here with an unusual version of the Jazz Messengers – one that features older players Walter Davis Jr on piano and Bill Hardman on trumpet, plus youthful tenor work from David Schnitter. The format's a bit looser than the usual Jazz Messengers set, and like the Stitt/Blakey album for Impulse, has a bit more of a focus on the strong tenor solos in the lead. Titles include "Blues March", "Birdlike", "I Can't Get Started", and "Ronnie's A Dynamite Lady". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Barney Kessel & Red MitchellTwo Way Conversation ... LP
Sonet (Sweden), 1974. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A warm reunion of two legendary west coast players from the 50s – recorded in Sweden in the 70s, in a style that seems to bring out new talents from both of them! The setting is extremely spare, with only Barney's guitar and Red's bass in the studio – blending electric and acoustic strings together wonderfully, in a sweetly swinging style awash in chromatic hues and mellow tones. The sound is incredibly gentle – as much about sound in space as it is about jazz – with a feel that almost recalls the best work of the time by Jim Hall. Titles include "Wave", "Summertime", "Walkin & Talkin", " Alone Again Naturally", and "Killing Me Softly". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Mads Vinding GroupDanish Design (aka Danish Drive) ... LP
Peters, 1977. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A totally excellent bit of drum-heavy jazz funk – originally recorded by Sonet in Sweden, and issued here in the US by Peters International. The album's a no-nonsense batch of tight groovers, played by Vinding's quartet with added conga work by Sabu Martinez! The tracks have a tight choppy Euro fusion mode – but not too much jamming, which is a good thing by us – and the best numbers strip out the drums at moments, leaving the record with a few very tasty breaks that really drive the cuts home. Titles include "Danish Drive" and "Funky But" – both of which have breaks – plus "Fast Winding", "La Tour", and "Moog's Blues". LP, Vinyl record album

Mel TormeMel Torme At The Red Hill/Live At The Maisonette ... CD
Atlantic/Collectors Choice, Early 60s/Early 70s. Used ... $3.99
2 classic rare albums by Mel Torme – both of them very live! Mel's swinging jazz vocals are always a treat, but he really opens up in a warm live setting – as you'll hear on this 2-in-1 CD that brings together 2 older albums from his years at Atlantic. The Red Hill sessions are great – and feature Mel swinging hard with a tight jazz group, on nice little numbers like "Love For Sale", "Love Is Just Around the Corner", "Shakin The Blues Away", and "In Other Words". His voice is perfect, and it's great to hear how he keeps his wonderful tone, even in a live setting. The other album's a bit later, and a bit schmaltzier, but Mel's still got a heartwarming quality that makes the music work, even when it shouldn't. Nice numbers on that one include "Jet Set", "What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life", "Superstition", and "It Takes Too Long To Live Alone". CD

Shrine/Horace's (UK), Late 60s. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
We know what you're thinking, how rare is the "rarest soul label" in the title, and more than that, how good are the tracks? Fortunately, in this case, the answer is really rare, and really great! 14 tracks from the rare Washington DC Shrine label, produced by Eddie Singleton and compiled in the early 90s for the Horace's reissue imprint. This set's a nifty batch of 60s soul stormers, with more of a Detroit sound than you might guess, and titles include "Don't Let Him Hurt You" by Les Chansonettes, "Guess Who Loves You" by Eddie Daye & The Four Bars, "No Other Way" by the Cautions, "Mad At The World" by the Epsilons, "No More Like Me" by Ray Pollard, "Stop Overlooking Me" by the Cairos, "I Believe I'll Love On" by Jimmy Armstrong, "You're My Only Love" by the Counts, "She Went Away" by Linda & The Vistas and "Huh Baby" by the Prophets. VariousShrine Northern – The 60s Rarest Dance Label ... LP
Shrine/Kent (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy ... $19.99 28.99
The most upbeat groovers from one of the rarest soul labels of the 60s – Washington DC's Shrine Records label – a small imprint who recorded some mighty fine singles that have been the gold standard for collectors for years! The company's output was quite small, and the label, as the title implies, never got much exposure at the time – but overall, Shrine's work is extremely great, and the tracks on this set soar with the best Philly and New York soul of the time, especially the male vocal group numbers, which are especially strong. The LP mixes two rare cuts that were not issued in the 60s with other singles on the label – and titles include "My Only Love" by The Counts, "Hey Boy" by The DC Blossoms, "No Other Way" by The Cautions, "Guess Who Loves You" by Eddie Daye & The 4 Bars, "Shame" by The Enjoyables, "I Won't Be Coming Back" by JD Bryant, "I Won't Believe It Till I See It" by Little Bobby Parker, "Takin My Time" by Leroy Taylor & The Four Kays, "Stop Overlooking Me" by The Cairos, and "Don't Let Him Hurt You" by Les Chansonettes. A fantastic soundtrack recorded in the immediate post-Tropicalia years – featuring some of the best early 70s work by Chico Buarque, Nara Leao, Maria Bethania, and others! The cover has a mad image with Buarque, Leao, and Bethania in top hats and shiny uniforms – and the music follows up with a similarly lively spirit – samba-esque, with other touches of rock and jazz production that give the work an expansive and trippy feel. Roberto Menescal handled the arrangements – and titles include "Cacada" by Chico Buarque, "Mais Uma Estrela" by Nara Leao, "Soneto" by Orquesta De Cordas, "Soneto" by Nara Leao, "Partido Alto" by MPB-4, "Formosa" by Nara Leao & Maria Bethania, "Baioque" by Maria Bethania, and "Cantores De Radio" by Chico, Naria, and Maria together!
