BarrabasBarrabas – Musica Caliente (aka Wild Safari) ... LP
RCA/Sommor (Spain), 1972. New Copy (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
Wonderful work from Barrabas – a hip Spanish group of the 70s who effortlessly blend together elements of funk, rock, and soul – at a level that made them surprisingly big on this side of the Atlantic too! Maybe part of the strength of their fame was that over here, the group were never pictured on the cover – so they fit right in the record racks with other funk records of the time – as they serve up a wild safari of grooves that's almost in a sort of party mode, with the band jamming on congas, organ, and guitars! The vocals trade back nicely between the lead singer and the ensemble in a soulful mode that shows that everyone was paying attention – and the best tracks have a tight groove with choppy guitar and driving conga, almost in an LA Chicano funk mode. Titles include "Woman", "Never In This World", "Wild Safari", and "Chicco". LP, Vinyl record album

BarrabasPower ... LP
RCA/Sommor (Spain), 1973. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $28.99
Funky rocking sounds from this hip Spanish group – served up with a bit of a tribal sound that's pretty sweet – and which makes Barrabas a key link between funk, rock, and club sounds in the mid 70s! The bass is pretty thundering, the drums are strong, and there's some cool piano and flute in the mix that give the cuts a bit of a Latin flourish – almost a bit like War or some of the other LA groups of the time who were mixing together Latin and soul elements, but with a few more rockish touches in the vocals. Titles include "The Horse", "Keep On Moving", "You Know", "Casanova", "Mr Money", and "Children". LP, Vinyl record album

BarrabasSoltad A Barrabas ... LP
Atco/Sommor (Spain), 1974. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $28.99
A mid-70s effort from Barrabas, and a set that still has the group burning along in a really great way – blending elements of soul and funk with a sharp instrumental jamming style that might have been prog in the hands of someone else, but which here keeps things grooving in a really nice way! The pace is picked up a bit, at a level that made these guys rising stars in the clubs in the moment right before disco – and the album includes lots of great cuts – including the funky tracks "Susie Wong" and "Funky Baby", the free soul-ish mellow groover "Lady Love", and the spacey "Fly Away".
