✨✧ Society Hill Orchestra with Herb SmithSoul City Walking – A Tribute To Archie Bell & The Drells ... CD
Society Hill, 2020. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A sweet tribute to Archie Bell & The Drells – a group who initially hailed from Texas, but cut some great recordings on the Philly scene of the 70s – which is why it's very fitting that this tribute's delivered by that city's Society Hill Orchestra! Herb Smith handles the lead vocals, but gets some nice harmonies behind – almost in a way that feels as if Archie and the group were getting back together to update some of their classics! As with other projects from this group, Butch Ingram is at the helm, arranging and producing – with music by other Ingram family members. Titles include "Harder & Harder", "Let's Groove", "I Can't Stop Dancing", "Girl You're Too Young", "There's Gonna Be A Showdown", and "Tighten Up". CD

Cherrill Rae, Rene Goodwin, & Teddi FuscoSociety Hill Goes Pop ... CD
Society Hill, 2019. Used ... $1.99
The Society Hill label goes pop, but not in a contemporary way – as the company's always been devoted to the best classic sounds of 70s Philly – which it explores here with the help of three different singers! The tunes include a lot of crossover classics you'd know from 70s radio, but retuned here a bit with help from producer/arranger Butch Ingram – and given some occasional lyrical twists from the singers too – a shifting lineup that features Cherrill Rae, Rene Goodwin, and Teddi Fusco. Titles include "Through The Fire", "Since I Lost My Baby", "Love Never Dies", and "Where Are You Now" by Cherrill Rae; "Come In From The Rain", "One More Time", and "You Are The Music In My Life" by Rene Goodwin; and "My Dad", "Dream With Your Name On It", and "I Just Had To Hear Your Voice" by Teddi Fusco. Society Hill, 2020. New Copy ... $4.99 14.99
Philadelphia is a city with lots of jazzy ladies – thanks to that special blend of jazz, soul, and class that really blossomed in the city during the 70s – and which has left Philly with a musical legacy that's distinct from so many other towns! That legacy is still going strong here – with full arrangements directed by Butch Ingram, of the legendary group Ingram – and lead vocals delivered by a host of Philly female singers, both classic and contemporary! Titles include "Overjoyed" by Marki Fields, "Bye Bye Baby" by Jean Carne, "Someday We'll All Be Free" by Vanessa Farley, "Where Or When" by Toni Richards, "Autumn Leaves" by Carla Benson, "What's New" by Toni Richards, "Where Are You Now" by Coretta Davis, and "First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" by Vanessa Farley. B BaxterWhere Is The Love ... CD
Society Hill, 2020. Used ... $5.99
Philly singer Mark Baxter bills himself as the "ladies choice" when he's on the stage – but he's got a warm, mature vocal style that's right up there with some of the greats of his city from years back – including some of the bigger male vocalists to record for the Philadelphia International label in the 70s! Baxter continues that legacy here in a nice way – especially hitting that mellow midtempo groove that Philly International had after the disco years – updated here with some more contemporary production and instrumentation, courtesy of the Ingram family. Titles include "Already Missing You", "Where Is The Love", "I'm Gonna Love You Just A Little More Baby", "You're My Latest My Greatest Inspiration", "Love So True", and "Standing Right Here". CD

Various6T's Rhythm N' Soul Society – In The Beginning ... CD
Kent (UK), 1960s. New Copy ... $9.99 18.99
Mod jazz and socking soul – a wicked little collection of 60s groovers, put together by the folks at London's 6T's Rhythm & Soul Society! The sound here is quite different than that of compilations by UK Northern Soul clubs and DJs – with an overall groove that's rougher, deeper, and more open to tracks from a variety of different genres. If we had to come up with our own tag, we'd almost call the sound here "early mod" – that keen British appreciation of all things American soul and R&B, but in the years before that love of the music had become too easily stereotyped. But whatever the genre, the set's a really great one – with a sweet Soul Cargo sort of groove that's presented with high fidelity and great notes on the club and its music! Titles include "Two Stupid Feet" by Chuck Jackson, "Zig Zag Lightning" by Little Johnny Taylor, "All About My Girl" by Jimmy McGriff, "Tell Me What You're Gonna Do" by James Brown, "Opportunity" by The Jewels, "Forget About Me" by Carolyn Crawford, "It's Me" by Johnny Copeland, "He's A Lover" by Tutti Hill, "Chica Boo" by Googie Rene Combo, and "The Hoochi Coochi Coo" by Hank Ballard & The Midnighters. Esther PhillipsPerformance ... LP
Kudu, 1974. Very Good+ ... $9.99
Not a live album – as you might think from the title – but a tight batch of tunes that shows the full funk and soul talents of the legendary Esther Phillips! The album's got a nicely dark undercurrent at times – a sound that's not as smooth as some of Esther's other Kudu albums from the 70s, with bits of R&B bubbling underneath the more contemporary arrangements. Backings are penned by Pee Wee Ellis and Gary King – and players include Bob James and Richard Tee on keyboards, Hubert Laws on flute, and Bernard Purdie and Steve Gadd on drums – the latter of whom provides a sublime beat on the album's standout funky number "Disposable Society" – one of those great little groovers that never did anything for Esther at the time of its release, but which has really gotten rediscovered in recent years! Other tracks include "Doing Our Thing", "Living Alone", "Can't Trust Your Neighbor With Your Baby", and "I Feel The Same". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Melvin Van PeeblesWatermelon Man (green vinyl pressing) ... LP
Beverly Hills/Real Gone, Early 70s. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99 25.99
A wild and weird early soundtrack work from the great Melvin Van Peebles – a set of songs composed by the man himself, and put together for an early directorial effort about a white man who wakes up one morning and finds himself black – and has to discover the real version of society from an African-American perspective! The music and politics are very similar to Melvin's early albums for A&M – songs that borrow from a few different styles, and aren't just straight soul and funk – handled with some larger arrangements from Bob Matthews, who amplifies some of the wildness in the tunes! Tracks include "Love, That's America", "Great Guy", "Eviction Scene", and "Where Are The Children". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Wynton Kelly Trio With Joe HendersonComplete Recordings ... CD
Lonehill (Spain), 1961/1968. Used 2CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A lost treasure from the Left Bank Jazz Society in Baltimore – material recorded by the Wynton Kelly trio with guest soloist Joe Henderson, in a mode that's similar to other Kelly material from the Baltimore scene with Hank Mobley and George Coleman! The tracks are all quite long – most running longer than 10 minutes – and the trio of Kelly, Paul Chambers, and Jimmy Cobb really steps back to let Henderson blow with a wide-open tone and solo approach that's quite different than his Blue Note work of the 60s. The 2CD set features a total of 14 numbers from the Baltimore recording – including "Autumn Leaves", "Four", "On The Trail", "Stardust/Old Folks", "On Green Dolphin Street", "Straight No Chaser", "What Is This Thing Called Love", and "Pfrancing". As a bonus, the package also features 2 tracks by the Kelly trio from 1961 – "Char's Blues" and "Autumn Leaves". CD
