Smokey RobinsonEssar ... LP
Tamla, 1984. Very Good+ ... $1.99
Smokey's a little bit off course here – heading into a range of mellow pop soul styles that are clearly inspired by artists who were inspired by Smokey's own majestic solo turn in the 70s – but who never manage to match his quality. And since Smokey's taking inspiration from the uninspired, there's also a quality to this set that feels the weight of that choice. The vocals are fine enough, but perhaps a bit too overly emotive on the ballads – especially for smooth Smokey. The more upbeat numbers have a feel that's trying too hard for a crossover – and even the title (which is a play on Smokey's initials, "SR") is kind of a deal-breaker. Titles include "Train Of Thought", "I Can't Find", "Gone Forever", "Close Encounters of The First Kind", "Little Girl Little Girl", "Girl I'm Standing There", and "Driving Thru Life In The Fast Lane". Tamla, 1978. Very Good+ ... $4.99
Love Breeze finds Smokey effortlessly cutting back and forth from a funky 70s dancefloor soul mode to more delicate, classic soul steeped numbers and slow jams. He does it all very well on a set we overlooked for too many years! Titles include "Why You Wanna See My Bad Side", "Feeling You, Feeling Me", "Shoe Soul", "Daylight & Darkness", "I'm Loving You Softly" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

Smokey RobinsonPure Smokey ... LP
Motown, 1974. Sealed ... $5.99
Excellent mid 70s work from Smokey, recorded right before his landmark Quiet Storm album, and in a smooth sophisticated style that showed that he was definitely on the right track after splitting from the Miracles! The sound here is totally great – a new level of sophistication for Robinson, and proof that he was one of the key folks who would take soul music to new levels in the 70s! The record includes the excellent "Virgin Man", a loping midtempo track that's not only a great stepper, but also a famous sample riff. Other tracks include "I Am I Am", "Fulfill Your Need", "Just Passing Through", "The Love Between Me & My Kids", and "It's Her Turn To Live". LP, Vinyl record album
(Reissue pressing. Cover has a cutout notch.)

Smokey RobinsonSmokey's Family Robinson ... LP
Tamla, 1976. Sealed ... $9.99
Smokey's Family Robinson finds Smokey exploring rather than simply setting out to continue riding the waves made by Quiet Storm. There's bits of dancefloor funk, pared down keyboard soul, spacey jams and a sweet ballad or two – all with Smokey's soul strirring vocals in peak form. Titles include "When You Came", "Get Out Of Town", "So In Love", "Open", "Castles Made Of Sand" and more LP, Vinyl record album

Smokey RobinsonYes It's You Lady ... LP
Tamla, 1982. Near Mint- ... $4.99
A slightly more-grooving record than some of Smokey's others from the time – done in a style that rolls around in a mostly-midtempo mode. There's almost a gentle 80s groove approach at times, although some of the tunes on the set are definitely in that stone mellow love song style that was Smokey's biggest trademark of the time. Titles include "Are You Still Here", "Tell Me Tomorrow", "Yes It's You Lady", "The Only Game In Town", "International Baby", and "Merry Go Ride". LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes the printed inner sleeve.)

✨✧ Smokey Robinson & The MiraclesAway We A Go Go ... LP
Tamla, 1966. Very Good ... $11.99
A key set in the second chapter of Smokey Robinson & The Miracles – that time when the group moved from the mellow ballads that were their first early strength, into some dancefloor stormers that easily made them one of the most favored Motown acts of the time! Smokey definitely takes the "go go" in the title seriously – and comes up with some great grooves that feature plenty of his own lead vocals, including some lesser-known gems that we especially like. Backing by the group is great, too – and the overall sound is extremely sweet harmony soul, with a perfect Motown set of arrangements from the backing group – on titles that include "Can You Love A Poor Boy", "Baby Baby", "I'm The One You Need", "Save Me", "Oh Be My Love", and "Swept For You Baby". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original 2 globes pressing with deep groove. Cover has light wear and some aging.)

✨✧ Smokey Robinson & The MiraclesGoing To A Go Go ... LP
Tamla, 1965. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Legendary stuff from Smokey Robinson and his wonderful group – a killer set from the second all-male version of The Miracles – recorded with some wonderfully soaring harmonies! The group's got a nice bite on the bottom here – a groove to go with the "go go" promised in the title – at a level that made these Miracles really take off on Motown dancefloors, yet still also have the late nite appeal of the earlier group too. The album includes the big hit dance number "Going To A Go Go", the classic ballad "Tracks Of My Tears", and loads of other wonderful numbers like "Ooo Baby Baby", "Let Me Have Some", "All That's Good", and "My Girl Has Gone". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono 2 globes pressing with deep groove. Cover has some surface and edge wear, moderate aging and clear tape along the top seam.)

✨✧ MarvelettesReturn Of The Marvelettes ... LP
Tamla, 1970. Near Mint- ... $29.99
A sweet groover from the Marvelettes – and a record that completely re-casts their sound for the Motown of the 70s! The group's still got the great soprano harmonies that made their early hits so wonderful, but the arrangements on the set are deeper and more sophisticated – taking them into hipper adult soul territory that we really love. Smokey Robinson produced, and wrote a lot of tracks for the set – and the backings are the work of Wade Marcus and David Van De Pitte – both well matched, and giving the album a fully unified sound. Titles include "So I Can Love You", "Marionette", "A Breathtaking Guy", "Uptown", "Someday We'll Be Together", and "Our Lips Seem To Rhyme Everytime". LP, Vinyl record album
(Stereo pressing with deep groove.)

Tamla, Early 60s. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great rare, early album by The Miracles – one you almost never see on wax! The album features the group back when they still had a female member, who gives the band a beautiful high harmony sound in tandem with Smokey Robinson's falsetto vocals. A classic early Detroit soul record from Smokey with 10 tracks in all, including "You've Really Got A Hold On Me", "Your Love", "A Love She Can Count On", "I Can Take A Hint", and "Such Is Love, Such Is Life". Great great stuff – with a much rawer sound than later recordings! LP, Vinyl record album

TemptationsReunion ... LP
Gordy, 1982. Very Good+ ... $2.99
An all-star effort from The Temptations – and a well-titled set that has the group brimming over with classic vocal talent! The group's expanded to a seven-piece outfit for the album – with Eddie Kendricks and David Ruffin back in the fold, singing alongside Dennis Edwards, Otis Williams, Melvin Franklin, and the rest of the group! Motown also culled together some top-shelf production talent for the set too – including Berry Gordy, Rick James, Barrett Strong, and Smokey Robinson – all of whom produce numbers for the record. Some of the tracks are in an 80s groove modes, and others are mellower ballads that offer plenty of space for vocal interplay – and titles include "I've Never Been To Me", "Backstage", "More On The Inside", "Standing On The Top", "Lock It In The Pocket", and "You Better Beware". Tammi TerrellIrresistible (180 gram yellow vinyl pressing) (2021 Black Friday Release) ... LP
Motown, 1968. New Copy (reissue)... On November 26, 2021
An irresistible solo album from the great Tammi Terrell – the Motown singer who's best remembered for her duets with Marvin Gaye, and who hardly ever got a chance to work on her own! Despite that lack, though, this album's a standout classic – a slightly different take on the female Motown sound of the 60s, with production by Harvey Fuqua and Johnny Bristol – in a vibe that's maybe just hinting a bit at the sound to come – which makes us wonder how much Terrell would have given us in the 70s, if she hadn't passed from this planet all too soon! Titles include cuts by Smokey Robinson, Johnny Bristol, and Fuqua himself – with tracks that include "I Can't Believe You Love Me", "Come On And See Me", "What A Good Man He Is", "He's The One I Love", and "Can't Stop Now (Love Is Calling)". (Note: This item is not for sale online until 7:00am on Saturday, November 27. It is in limited supply – and by nature of the Record Store Day rules it will be offered for sale first to customers who visit the Dusty Groove retail outlet in Chicago the morning of Friday, November 26.
