JD AllenQueen City ... CD
Savant, 2021. New Copy ... $15.99 16.99
A really powerful solo album from JD Allen – maybe the first we've ever heard from the tenor saxophonist, and a set that's got a very different vibe than some of his recent outings with groups! Allen recorded the music during the height of lockdown in 2020, at a time when he'd had to step back from performing live and collaborating with others – a moment he used to get back to basics on his instrument, and begin to re-explore all the things that first made being a saxophonist so important to him. There's definitely a sense of isolation and melancholy here – as you might expect – but there's also a feeling of hope and new inspiration, a quiet message from a dark time that's great to have on record. Titles include "Nyla's Sky", "Maude", "OTR", "Vernetta", "Queen City", "Gem & Eye", "Kristian With A K", and "Wildwood Flower". CD

Jerry BergonziIntersecting Lines ... CD
Savant, 2014. Used ... $12.99
The title's a great one for this album – not just because tenorist Jerry Bergonzi always seems to have this forward-thinking, linear quality about his work – but also because his talents here intersect strongly with the alto sax of Dick Oatts! The pair really create some magic here – a balance between Bergonzi's bold tone and that raspier, more personal sound of Oatts – wrapped up beautifully with bass from Dave Santoro and drums from Andrea Michelutti – no piano at all, which only seems to further the fluid quality of the saxophones! There's a loose, free swing to the record – a quality that's still quite rhythmic, but which opens up without the piano and lets the saxophonists get very expressive – sparking stunning lines on original Bergonzi tracks that include "Creature Feature", "Tanzania", "Dig Oatts", "Itchy", "Arbonius Unt", and "Horton's Lament". ✨✧ Pat BianchiSomething To Say – The Music Of Stevie Wonder ... CD
Savant, 2021. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really sweet take on the music of Stevie Wonder – one that takes the tunes in all sorts of directions we didn't expect! Part of the vibe is in line with the organ work of Pat Bianchi – more of a 60s soul jazz mode, of the sort that was big in the years before Stevie penned most of these classics – but the guitar work of Paul Bollenback in the group also makes for a bit of a change too – a style that's sometimes fuller and fuzzier than you'd hear in a more traditional organ trio, at a level that changes up the vibe in a really fresh way. Byron Landham is on drums, Wayne Escoffery plays tenor on two cuts, and titles include "If It's Magic", "Go Home", "Superstition", "Moon Blue", "Isn't She Lovely", "Ribbon In The Sky", and "Until You Come Back To Me". Danny GrissettRemembrance ... CD
Savant, 2017. Used ... $7.99
Pianist Danny Grissett is fantastic here – not just bursting out with so many deft colors and changes on both piano and Fender Rhodes, but also really showing some great strengths as a leader too! One of those strengths is the way he puts together the tunes – especially the more familiar numbers, which feel completely fresh here – augmented by some wonderful work on both soprano and tenor sax from Dayna Stephens, who's almost the co-star of the record – especially when he takes on a tune from the lead! The quartet's balanced out nicely by Bill Stewart on drums and Vicente Archer on bass – all players who really seem to "get" each other in the best way possible. In addition to Grissett's original tunes "Renatus", "Lament For Bobby", "Digital Big Foot", and "A Friend Indeed" – the set also features versions of "Just Enough", "Prelude To A Kiss", "Detour Ahead", and "Gallop's Gallop". ✨✧ Lafayette HarrisYou Can't Lose With The Blues ... CD
Savant, 2019. Used ... Out Of Stock
Straight, strong, and soulful work from pianist Lafayette Harris – working here with a nicely understated trio that features Peter Washington on bass and Lewis Nash on drums – both musicians with more than enough sensitivity to make some subtle contributions, while still letting Harris dominate the lead and do his thing! The tracks are all relatively short – most in the four or five minute range – but like a piano pro of the old school, Harris really packs a lot into a little space – on titles that include "Bloomdido", "Love Me In A Special Way", "Things Ain't What They Used To Be", "Don't Let The Sun Catch You Crying", "He's My Guy", and "The Juicy Blues". Louis HayesCrisis ... CD
Savant, 2021. New Copy ... $15.99 16.99
The great Louis Hayes has been giving us incredible records for decades – and this recent set still has the drummer very much at the top of his game – working with a soulful conception that few folks can match, and really getting the best out of the wonderful group he's got on the set! The lineup is fantastic – Steve Nelson on vibes, Abraham Burton on tenor, David Hazeltine on piano, and Dezron Douglas on bass – all artists we love in other settings, but who seem to sparkle even more strongly here under the guidance of Hayes! Camille Thurman sings on two cuts – "Where Are You" and "I'm Afraid The Masquerade Is Over" – but the real strength of the album comes from the many instrumental tracks, on titles that include "Crisis", "Arab Arab", "Desert Moonlight", "Creeping Crud", "Roses Poses", and "Oxygen". Bill HeidDealin Wid It ... CD
Savant, 2022. New Copy ... $15.99 16.99
A warmly well-rounded set of organ jazz from Bill Heid – maybe not the biggest player on the Hammond B3, but one who's been slowly building up an excellent legacy of records like this! There's an understated grace to the way that Bill handles the instrument – he's not out to blow the top off the Hammond, but has this command of color, tone, and timing that's really wonderful – served up in mostly trio format with Perry Hughes on guitar and Randy Gelispie on drums! Heid has a way of going deep right at the start of a tune, then continuing to keep things crisp and cool – a special sort of tone that's very much his own. He also sings a bit on two tracks, Kevin Bujo Jones joins the group on percussion on three cuts, and titles include the originals "Dealin Wid It", "Four To One", "It's A Living", "Minor Worm", "Naughty Little Puppy", and "Samba Cat". ✨✧ Bill O'ConnellChange Is Gonna Come ... CD
Savant, 2022. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Pianist Bill O'Connell keeps it nice and lean here – working in a core quartet that moves its instrumentation around, but always in ways that maybe bring more of an edge to the record than some of O'Connell's previous records – yet all without losing the soulful charms that make him so great! Bill himself plays acoustic piano, but switches to Fender Rhodes on two cuts – a theme that's followed as Craig Handy plays soprano sax on three, and tenor on two more – while bassist Lincoln Goines shifts between acoustic and electric basses. Steve Jordan handles drums, and Pedrito Martinez adds percussion on a few tracks – exploring some of the Latin currents that Bill sometimes adds to his records – on titles that include "Moment's Notice", "Sun For Sonny", "A Change Is Gonna Come", "A Prayer For Us", "Sweet Peanut", "Enough Is Enough", and "Chaos". Jim SnideroLive At The Deer Head Inn ... CD
Savant, 2021. Used ... $9.99
Alto saxophonist Jim Snidero has a hell of a rhythm section on this recent live date – Orrin Evans on piano, Peter Washington on bass, and Joe Farnsworth on drums – a trio who really set things on fire, right from the very first note! It's great to hear the three players working together with each other here – as they all seem to bring out different qualities than you might hear otherwise – especially Evans and Farnsworth, who seem really moved by the presence of the always rock-solid Washington! Snidero's great too – crafting these sharp lines on alto that link back to an older hardbop mode, but also have plenty of his own personality too – often the fullness and fluidity you might expect to normally hear from a tenor. Tracks include "Idle Moments", "My Old Flame", "Yesterdays", "Now's The Time", "Autumn Leaves", and "Bye Bye Blackbird". CD

✨✧ Jim SnideroStrings ... CD
Milestone/Savant, 2003. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really fantastic record from reedman Jim Snidero – one that hints at its sound with the "strings" in the title – even though that's just a really tiny part of the overall picture! There's lots more going on here than just a saxophonist with strings – this isn't a laidback ballad session, with Jim blowing familiar tunes in a late nite mode – and instead, his work on alto (and a bit of flute) is very firmly ingrained in the larger charts on the set – strings handled by Laura Seaton, but set to tunes that are almost all originals by Jim himself – and given this great core energy from a quartet that includes Renee Rosnes on piano, Paul Gill on bass, and Billy Drummond on drums. Titles include "Slipping Away", "Theme For Ernie", "Forever Gone", "Ventura", and the three-part "River Suite". CD

Brian Eno with Jon Hopkins & Leo AbrahamsSmall Craft On A Milk Sea ... CD
Warp, 2010. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A brilliant set of ambient atmosphere and heavier instrumental moodcraft from Brian Eno on Warp Records – excellent new material from a true innovator – with deft accompaniment from Leo Abrahams on some really unique, textural guitar and Jon Hopkins on piano, keys and electronics. As a producer & collaborator to superstars, Eno seems to be called in to provide sweeping, yet atypical walls of sound to more conventional pop/rock songwriting, but his own all too few records are as unencumbered by convention as ever. The sounds range from spare and open, to more of a thumping intensity. Of course production quality is truly impeccable, as you should expect from a sound savant of Eno's caliber. Titles include "Emerald And Lime", "Complex Heaven", "Flint", "Horse", "Bone Jump", "Dust Shuffle", "Written, Forgotten", "Late Anthropocene", "Calcium Needles", "2 Forms Of Anger", "Paleosonic" and more. ✨✧ Alphonse MouzonAngel Face ... CD
Tenacious, 2011. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the straightest jazz sets we've ever heard from drummer Alphonse Mouzon – and one of the greatest to be issued on his Tenacious label as well! The set was put together over the space of a decade or more – and the cuts are overflowing with top-shelf talent – assembled by Mouzon for the album, and recorded with a tight, soulful groove that's very much in the best spirit of recent sessions on labels like Savant or HighNote – or some of those great soul jazz sessions on Muse from the late 80s/early 90s. The groups shift from track to track – mostly in a quintet mode, with players that include Arturo Sandoval and Wallace Roney on trumpet; Ernie Watts, Bob Mintzer, Don Menza, Charles Owens, and Antoine Roney on tenor; Cedar Walton and Kenny Barron on piano, Christian McBride and Henry Franklin on bass, and Mouzon himself (of course!) on drums. Titles include "Stepping Stone", "A Labor Of Love", "Birds On a Wire", "Blues Clues", "More Miles In The Sky", and "I Wonder Why". CD
