Rolling Stones12 x 5 ... LP
London, Mid 60s. Very Good ... $14.99
Essentially early Stones! 12 X 5 is The Rolling Stones at a very early, hard grooving peak, way back in '64. It's ground breaking stuff, in they they truly pave the way for so much of the soul, blues and R&B loving Anglos to come out of the Brit and US scenes in the months and years to come. It's a covers-heavy set, given that they were just beginning to do doing original material at this early point – and the tracks include the Jagger/Richards penned "Good Times, Bad Times", "Congradulations" and "Grown Up Wrong" – plus "Time Is On My Side", "Around And Around", "2120 South Michigan Avenue", "Susie Q" and more. LP, Vinyl record album
(70s blue label stereo pressing with Bell Sound stamp. Cover has some ring & edge wear.)

✨✧ Rolling StonesAftermath (gold SACD pressing) ... CD
Abkco, 1966. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A record that's a real step forward for The Rolling Stones – a set that really marks the emergence of the Jagger/Richards team as a songwriting powerhouse for the 60s – and which has the group moving past bluesy roots into some nicely trippier territory at times! Everything from the previous years is still nicely intact – but the band are definitely on the way towards that Stones sound that made them very distinct from other blues-inspired UK acts of their generation – heard here in a mix of classic singles and overlooked LP tracks that include "Paint It Black", "Stupid Girl", "Lady Jane", "Under My Thumb", "Flight 505", "High & Dry", and "Going Home". CD
(Out of print, 2002 hybrid SACD pressing – works on regular CD players too!)

Abkco, 1968. Used ... $6.99
One of the greatest albums ever from The Rolling Stones – a set that still draws on all the bluesy roots of their best 60s material, yet which also shows a sharper, nastier edge as well! The album shows the tremendous sense of focus and power the Stones had in this crucial late 60s stretch – a bold step forward that would give them some of their most memorable moments ever, launched by this sublime set of tracks that includes "Sympathy For The Devil", "Street Fighting Man", "Dear Doctor", "Parachute Woman", "Prodigal Son", "Factory Girl", and "Stray Cat Blues". Virgin, 1972. Used ... $4.99
The Rolling Stones at their rawest, most shambling, sleazy and brilliant – the epic, unimpeachable Exile On Main Street! What can we say about one of the most iconic LPs of all time other than chime in with our agreement that it's one of the greatest rock albums ever! Big choruses come and go, but the easy hooks of earlier and later Stones hits are buried in mud, grit and a sleazy bluesy groove. Rolling Stones, 1973. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $24.99
A sometimes-overlooked classic from the Rolling Stones – but that's maybe just because it's sometimes obscured in the shadow of Exile On Main Street, the record that immediately preceded it! And while it might be a stretch to some, we like to think of Goat's head as kind of a capper to that double-length set – as the Stones are still working out a fair bit of similar ideas, with an opening ear to some global currents, and with great help from some of their key collaborators too. The set's worth it alone for the classic gut-wrencher "Angie" – and other tracks include "Star Star", "Hide Your Love", "Winter", "Can You Hear The Music", "100 Years Ago", and "Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker)". There's a sinister quality to the record right from the start – thanks to the brooding, haunting power of "Gimmie Shelter" – and the sublime "Monkey Man", which may well be one of our favorite Rolling Stones songs ever! But the whole thing's great – and other tracks include "Love In Vain", "Let It Bleed", "Live With Me", "Midnight Rambler", "Country Honk", and the classic "You Can't Always Get What You Want". CD

Rolling Stones, 1978. Very Good+ (pic cover)... $6.99
A club crossover classic from The Rolling Stones – a track that surprisingly got the group onto the dancefloor in the late 70s, but which still held onto most of their best elements! Although sometimes panned as a cheap disco cash-in effort by some, the tune is actually pretty darn great – a gritty little tune that relies on heavy vamping, rolled-out guitar parts, and one of the catchiest vocal hooks that Mick Jagger had sung in years. Harmonica completes the sound, and the whole thing's got a bluesy undercurrent that's totally great! 12-inch, Vinyl record

A massive discovery of material from the early Rolling Stones – beautifully-recorded performances that were originally done for the BBC – served up here in a double-length set that adds a huge amount of sounds to the start of their catalog! The tracks here date from 1963 to 1965, and really show the group evolving in the space of just a few short years – playing their own music, and great soul and blues numbers too – on shows that include Saturday Club, Blues In Rhythm, Yeah Yeah, and Top Gear. Titles include "Mona", "You Better Move On", "Satisfaction", "Come On", "Cops & Robbers", "The Spider & The Fly", "Roll Over Beethoven", "Cry To Me", "Mercy Mercy", "Around & Around", "Fannie Mae", "You Better Move On", "Route 66", "It's All Over Now", and "The Last Time". Also includes great bonus tracks – "Little By Little", "Ain't That Loving You Baby", "Beautiful Delilah", "Crackin Up", "I Just Want To Make Love To You", "Carol", "If You Need Me", "Confessin The Blues", and "2120 South Michigan Ave". The Stones may be old, but they ain't dumb! Mick & co. must have noticed the huge shot of artistic credibility Justin Timberlake received after the Neptunes hopped aboard, which is something the Stones haven't had in a couple of decades. The 'Tunes do a pretty great re-imagined take on the classic rock staple – adding some sitar and Eastern string touches on top of their patented minimal claps, snaps, and thumps. On top of the full length Neptunes mix and an edit you get Fatboy Slim's mix, also in epic form plus radio edit. Cook's is a fine, bubble gum club mix with a Happy Mondays kind of vibe. The Full Phat mix strays the most from the original, keeping Mick's vocal and the whoo-whoos, but completely strips the band and adds all electronic beats. The original version is here for you kids who didn't realize there was one! CD

A legendary night at Chicago's Checkerboard Lounge – a set recorded at a time when the Rolling Stones were in town, and decided to pop down to the south side, and visit the home turf of their blues hero, Muddy Waters! You'll notice that the record bills the performance as Muddy Waters & The Rolling stones – and that's definitely the case here, as the Stones step in almost as Muddy's backing band – allowing Waters to really step out in the lead, while the group remind us that way back in the day, they got their start as a blues-based group first, before finding a style of their own! The set's also filled with guest appearances – including work from Buddy Guy, Junior Wells, and Lefty Dizz – and titles include "Mannish Boy", "Hoochie Coochie Man", "Long Distance Call", "Next Time You See Me", "Champagne & Reefer", "Clouds In My Heart", "One Eyed Woman", and "You Don't Have To Go". Dudley PerkinsA Lil' Light ... CD
Stones Throw, 2003. Used ... $4.99
A nice, moody hip hop/funk album from one of the deepest talents on the Stones Throw roster! Dudley came to underground hip hop fame as Declaime, but really stepped forward as a durable, innovative artist with the Dudley Perkins singles that have dropped thus far – and A Lil Light soundly delivers on that promise. It's all about mood – this may be the murkiest, most muddily funky thing Madlib has ever produced, with crackly, hissing beats, bass and samples. Dudley's vocals are about as far from the crooning NuSoul sound as you can get. He's grooves along with an improvised feel to the lyrics, loosely scatting in both a rolling deep bass and a soulful, nearly crying falsetto. The sound falls somewhere between the denser parts of D'Angelo's Voodoo and the spacier aspects of 70s soul and funk. Totally unique and satisfying – would you expect any less of Stones Throw? Tracks include "Money", the Sun Ra-inspired "Gotta Go", "You Really Know Me?", "Washedbrainsyndrome", "Flowers", "Just Think", "Yo' Soul", "Momma", "Lil' Black Boy" and more. CD

Screamin Jay Hawkins caught at the height of one of his first "revival" periods – the late 60s, when he was opening for the Rolling Stones, and popping out of the same sort of coffin pictured on the cover! The style of the record takes the older R&B mode of Hawkins' 50s singles, and maybe gives it a bit more of a kick with some of the younger blues generation – but in a way that only seems to open up his music more than before. The album was recorded live in a Hollywood club, where Hawkins was clearly trying out the act that was winning him appeal with the new crowds – and players include Lyle Ritz on bass, Plas Johnson on tenor, Earl Palmer on drums, and even a bit of piano from Grahame Bond. ✨✧ Hot IceStone Disco ... LP
Radio Records, 1979. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Here's a pretty groovy concept – a "Stone Disco" album that features disco covers of the Rolling Stones! Hot Ice serve up the tunes in an appropriately butch take on the disco genre – getting all gruff and nasty on the vocals – not really matching the Jagger/Richards spirit exactly, but working against the soaring strings with a bit of earthiness. Titles include "Brown Sugar", "Satisfaction", "Under My Thumb", "Street Fighting Man", and "19th Nervous Breakdown". LP, Vinyl record album

Juan De La CruzHimig Natin ... CD
Vicor (Philippines), 1973. New Copy ... $3.99 14.99
Juan De La Cruz is a band, not a guy – and they're one of the hardest rocking combos of the far east in the early 70s! The trio's propelled strongly by some razor-sharp guitar from Wally Gonzales – a player who stands mightily with some of the biggest British names of a few years before – but who's all the more compelling because of his lack of commercial fame in this scene. Vocals are often in that same blues-into-rock mode initiated by the Rolling Stones – but are often taken to weirder, wilder territory overall. Titles include "Round & Round", "I Wanna Say Yeah", "Take You Home", "Shake Your Brains", and "Big Boss Man". CD

✨✧ Clydie KingRushing To Meet You ... CD
Tiger Lily/Everland (Austria), 1976. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The rare second album from Clydie King – recorded at a time when she was lending her backing vocals to artists like The Rolling Stones, Steely Dan, and Humble Pie – but a set that firmly puts Clydie in the lead! King's got an amazing style of singing – deep and raspy at one moment, with key southern soul roots – yet also totally tight and together, too – with a focus that really shines on the album's more upbeat tracks – groovers that almost have an east coast club vibe at times, quite similar to material that Clydie recorded with the group Brown Sugar! Titles include "Rushing To Meet You", "Loving You Is So Easy", "Steal Your Love Away", "Punish Me", "Our Love Is Special", and "Morning Sun". CD

✨✧ Masked MaraudersMasked Marauders – The Complete Deity Recordings ... CD
Deity/Wounded Bird, 1969. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A pretty great idea for a late 60s rock record – even if the record itself is even better than its idea! The whole concept of the "masked marauders" was that the group was supposedly formed by big rockers of the time – unable to be listed on the cover, because of contractual obligations. And in truth, the set does sound a lot like it could have been lifted from sessions by The Rolling Stones, or Get Back-era Beatles – plus maybe a few other contemporaries too – yet it's all actually the work of some great unknowns, who came up with a sweet gimmick to get the record out there! On its own, the set's a real charmer – and has a mix of rootsy modes and tighter, deeper ideas that's not unlike some of the George Harrison/Phil Spector work – save for those moments when the Marauders are clearly trying to sound a bit more like a big name act. Titles include "I Can't Get No Nookie", "Cow Pie", "Duke Of Earl", "I Am The Japanese Sandman", "Later", "More Or Less Hudson's Bay Again", and "Season Of The Witch". Also features two mono single tracks – "Cow Pie" and "I Can't Get No Nookie". CD

✨✧ MetersTrick Bag (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Reprise/Rhino, 1976. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A sweet Cali set from The Meters – one that loses a bit of their rougher roots, yet still holds onto plenty of funk at the same time! By the mid 70s, the New Orleans soul sound had broken out of the underground, was residing happily in mainstream LA. Allen Toussaint already produced a bucketful of albums for Warner Brothers, and The Meters themselves are working in a crossover territory that has them touring with the Rolling Stones and hitting a whole new range of college-type audiences. The group's smoothed things out considerably, but still manages to funk nicely at the best moments – in a warmer way than during the Josie Records years, but still with a groove that's much deeper than most of their contemporaries. Titles are a much a "trick bag" as the title – with a cover of Earl King's "Trick Bag" that features guest vocals by Earl, a remake of "(Doodle Loop) The World is a Little Bit Under the Weather", one of their best from the Josie days, a cover of "Honky Tonk Woman", which we can only assume was played on tour with The Stones – plus the original cuts "Chug A Lug", "Mister Moon", and "Find Yourself". Includes the bonus tracks "Love The One You're With", "What More Can I Do?", "Down By The River", "Come Together" & "Big Chief". CD
(2001 remastered edition with 5 bonus tracks!)

✨✧ Joe PassStones Jazz ... LP
World Pacific, 1966. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A sweet jazzy take on the music of The Rolling Stones – one that features guitarist Joe Pass in the lead, over some tight backings from the great Bob Florence! Joe's joined by Dennis Budimir on additional acoustic guitar – and both players ring out with a hollow-body sound that's a lot lighter than the original style of Jagger & Richards – almost a bossa take on the Stones at points, supported by soprano and tenor sax from Bill Perkins, trombone from Tommy Pedersen, and vibes from Victor Feldman. Titles include "Lady Jane", "I Am Waiting", "As Tears Go By", "Stones Jazz", "Paint It Black", "Play With Fire", and "Mother's Little Helper". LP, Vinyl record album

That's a famous AC/DC album cover image on the front – and that's a great introduction to the work of Hipgnosis – the legendary British design firm who did a huge amount of work for albums during the classic rock generation! Hipgnosis were one of the first forces to really see the album cover as a showcase for artwork – and that legacy is strongly documented here in a huge, oversized hardcover volume – one that gives the company the full art book treatment, with dozens of projects inside – work for artists who include Led Zeppelin, The Police, UFO, The Who, Jimi Hendrix, Humble Pie, Genesis, Keith Moon, Todd Rundgren, Scorpions, Dave Edmunds, Brand X, Syd Barrett, Godley & Creme, Paul McCartney & Wings, The Rolling Stones, Queen, Pink Floyd, and dozens of others!
