Angelilo & HamelComplicite ... LP
Return To Analog (Canada), 1977. New Copy (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
A jazz record, but one with so much going on it's impossible to pin down – strands of influences from Latin, Brazilian, and other modes – mixed with occasional vocal contributions too! The vibe is a bit like some of those really creative criss-crossings on the French scene of the 70s – maybe like a record on Saravah – and maybe that's no surprise, given that the set is French Canadian – a meeting in the studio between bassist/arranger Vic Angelillo and pianist Henri Hamel – in a lineup that features guitars, trumpet, alto, soprano sax, flute, and some nice electric piano too! Vocalists include Ranee Lee, Leo Monast, Yolanda Lisi, and Claude Leveilee – and the whole thing has a really groovy vibe. Titles include "Quand On Verra Mon Ame", "Paix", "On Ne Sait Plus", "Un Ile Perdue", "Le Gout D'Aimer", "L'Eau De L'Ennui", and "Valse D'Une Ile". LP, Vinyl record album

Miles Davis with Sonny StittLive In Paris – 1960 ... LP
Fremeaux & Associates/Return To Analog (Canada), 1960. New Copy 2LP ... $24.99
Rare work from a sometimes-overlooked chapter in the career of Miles Davis – a time when Sonny Stitt was briefly filling the tenor sax role that was more famously held by John Coltrane and Wayne Shorter! Stitt in any group is always a treat – and here, working with Miles, he turns in some of his most far-reaching solos of the period – very different than the shorter, more economical work of his studio albums – and even different than some of his longer-form material on Prestige to come! Stitt really rises to meet Miles in spirit – maybe in part because of the rest of the group features the famous rhythm trio of Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Jimmy Cobb on drums – moving hard and with a great sense of modal energy, on titles that include "Four", "All Of You", "No Blues", "Two Bass Hit", "Walkin", "Autumn Leaves", "So What", "If I Were A Bell", and "Round Midnight". ✨✧ Franck DervieuxDimension M ... LP
Return To Analog (Canada), 1972. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Franck Dervieux takes off to Dimension M in this very cool set of prog tracks from the Montreal scene of the 70s – music that's heavy on Franck's own work on piano, organ, and electric piano – driven onwards by a tight little combo, and topped with some occasional wordless vocals from Christiane Robichaud – a singer whose approach fits right in with the group like another instrument in the mix! The tunes are a mix of jazz and rock, very much in the spirit of some of the hipper French work of this nature from the time – and the approach is more freewheeling and fluid than some of Franck's other records from the period. Titles include "Present Du Futur", "Orejona Mater", "Dimension M", "Atlantide", and "Hyperboree Civilisation Un". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ DionysosChange D'Adresse ... LP
Return To Analog (Canada), 1976. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A sharp slice of prog from the French Canadian scene of the 70s – served up by a group who realize that they actually do more with less by the time of this third album – a set that's filled with short tunes that have all these wonderfully focused, jazzy instrumental touches! The group has a warmth that goes beyond some of their contemporaries – and the tunes all have great vocals, sometimes harmonized by the group, and lots of excellent work on Hammond organ, Fender Rhodes, saxes, flute, and guitar – flowing out in ways that are never too extended, but certainly make their presence known. Titles include "Retro", "Pit Buick", "Un Bec Une Caresse", "Flou Pas Fou", "Yvette", "Ostid Probleme", and "C'Est Comme Ca". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ DionysosLe Grande Jeu (2020 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Return To Analog (Canada), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The smoking debut album from Dionysos – a French Canadian combo from the start of the 70s who are partly hard rock, but also have a more freewheeling vibe – not entirely prog, although jamming at times, but maybe more of that special sort of sound that some of the French scene would pick up a few years later! There's plenty of fuzz on the guitars, and the French language vocals are soulful and heartfelt – and a heavy dose of Hammond organ holds the whole thing together nicely – on tracks that include "Suzie", "Narcotique", "Agneau De Dieau", "L'Age D'Or", "La Colere", and "L'Age Du Chlore". Return To Analog (Canada), 1972. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A gem of a record from the French Canadian scene of the 70s – a musical wonderland that's surprisingly under-tapped, even though most of its records came out in close proximity to us in the US! Dionysos blend hard rock roots with a vibe that's all their own – often touched with some nice elements that come from the French lyrics of the tunes, sung in a way that's expressive but without ever sounding fake or over the top. As with their debut, the guitar work is excellent – strong leads and solos, with plenty of fuzz – on titles that include "Demain La Vie", "Le Prince Jardine", "Ballade Inquiete", "Terreur Et Joie", "Chanson De Courage Tot", and "Lever Du Prince". ✨✧ Beverly Glenn-CopelandBeverly Copeland (clear vinyl pressing) ... LP
CBC/Return To Analog (Canada), 1970. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Completely sublime work from Beverly Glenn Copeland – a really unique artist who's almost a genre unto herself – and who sings here in a mix of folk, jazz, and soul – maybe resonant with work at the time by Terry Callier or Nina Simone, but every bit as individual as the best from those two giants too! The performance was recorded by CBC at a key moment in Beverly's career – after a time she'd spent on the scene in Montreal, really soaking up different influences and exploring musical pathways away from her American roots – to a point where she emerges here as a very righteous, yet very personal singer – clearly not immediately interested in chart success, even though she's got the power of a young Roberta Flack. Titles include "Northwind", "Swords Of Gold", "Don't Despair", "Nothing Beautiful", "Song From Beads", "Untitled", "Interval", "Reflections", and "Durocher". LP, Vinyl record album

Sadik HakimSadik Hakim (London Suite) ... LP
Radio Canada/Return To Analog (Canada), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $16.99
One of the greatest moments ever from pianist Sadik Hakim – a player most people know for his contribution to the American bop scene of the late 40s – but an artist who grew even more strongly during his later years in Montreal! This album's a real highlight from that overlooked time in Hakim's career – a set that not only has the musician playing both Fender Rhodes and acoustic piano, but which also highlights his tremendous skill as a writer, too – with a richness that easily rivals the best on the European scene of the time – such as some of our favorite London jazz musicians, or the great work on MPS. Side one features the extended "London Suite" – a work that's poetic, but also pretty darn groovy too – and side two features on shorter compositions that include "Liliane", "Grey Cup Caper", and "Moon In Aquarius" – all carried off beautifully by a group that includes Al Khabyyr Sayyd Abdul on alto and flute, Billy Robinson on tenor, and Peter Leitch on guitar. Les JaguarsLes Jaguars Vol 2 (clear yellow vinyl pressing) ... LP
Disques Merite/Return To Analog (Canada), Mid 60s. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99
A record with a sexy cover and a slinky sound to match – the rare second album from the cool French instrumental combo Les Jaguars – a 60s group who start in modes that resemble American surf guitar, but really take off into some great directions of their own! The style here is familiar – bass, two guitars, and drums – but the quality of the instrumentation gets nicely complex, and opens up way past catchy themes and references to sand and surf – as the group turn in mostly original tunes throughout, and have some especially great interplay between the two guitars – at a level that might normally be carried by an additional keyboard or tenor sax. The record's a hell of an instro rocker – way more so than you'd guess from the cheesecake cover – and titles include "Tourbillon", "Guitare Cha Cha", "Melle Yeye", "Guitare Strip", "Guitare Jet", "Dors Mon Amour", and "Jaguar Shake". Les SinnersSatan (2019 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Disques Merite/Return To Analog (Canada), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... $16.99
A rare bit of Canadian psych from the start of the 70s – served up by a group with a sound that's all their own! Some numbers here are straightforward hard rockers, but others have a more complex approach – not proggy, almost performative – like some of the trippier French material of the period, which almost had a communal creation sort of vibe. There's plenty of searing guitars and very offbeat French lyrics – and the record's got a very nice sense of variety from tune to tune. Titles include "Quebec Nous T'Aimons", "Groovy", "Petite Fille T'Es Down", "OK L'Chien", "Charogne", "Heavy", and "Aux Petits Oiseux" – which is a very cool psychedelic raga that rounds out the record! ✨✧ Thelonious MonkLive In Paris 1961 ... LP
Fremeaux & Associates/Return To Analog (Canada), 1961. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Fantastic work from Thelonious Monk – a superbly-recorded live set from early 60s Paris – done with his legendary quartet with Charlie Rouse on tenor! The music here is wonderful – tracks that are often quite long, and stretched out nicely from the Columbia Records material by the group – with especially long improvisations by Monk that really reignite our respect for his genius – and the kind of soulful solos from Rouse that are always a perfect match! The bass of John Ore is beautifully recorded too – maybe even more powerful here than usual – and Frankie Dunlop completes the group with wonderfully deft work on drums. Titles include "Well You Needn't", "Jackie-ing", "Hackensack", and "Rhythm A Ning". LP, Vinyl record album

OctobreOctobre (tan vinyl pressing) ... LP
Return To Analog (Canada), Early 70s. New Copy (reissue)... $9.99
An excellent prog set from the early 70s Quebec scene – work that really shows just how special that oft-overlooked world of music could be at the time! Octobre certainly have the instrumental chops to rival bigger prog groups, but they also come across with a quality that's more personal and pointed – as if they've also been influenced by some of the hipper French singer/songwriters of the late 60s, and are encouraged to put themselves forward as strongly from a lyrical mode as an instrumental one. Pierre Flynn handles the organ and electric piano – and also wrote all the songs – titles that include "Viens Vivre", "Dans Ma Ville", "Les Vivants", "Si On Partait", "Ca Prend Presque Rien", and "Au Fond Des Les Yeux". A beautiful mix of Quebecois prog and fusion – performed here by the core group Offenbach, working with larger accompaniment from the Vic Vogel Big Band! The performance is a unique one, but also a summation of all the freewheeling ideas that were taking place in this overlooked scene – echoes of European music mixing with more homegrown execution – and coming off brilliantly throughout. This special 2LP edition features six tracks that were no on the original release, and a bonus instrumental cut too – with titles that include "A L'Envers", "Vagabond", "Sad Song", "Teddy", "High Down", "Promenade Sur Mars", and "Duke's Shuffle". SexEnd Of My Life ... LP
Trans Canada/Return To Analog (Canada), 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99
The second album from Canadian hard rock legends Sex – a power trio at the core, but expanded here with some great flute and sax, the latter of which is played in both acoustic and electric modes! The sound isn't quite prog, but the songs are longer than before, and the jazzy reed work really helps give the whole thing a really great flavor – especially when electric, which can come off like a harmonica jamming along with the guitar! The changes are mighty sharp – these guys have gotten even better since their landmark debut – and titles include "Born To Love", "Syphilissia", "The End Of My Life", "Pleasure", "Emotions", and "I'm Starting My Life Today". ✨✧ Horace SilverLive In Paris 1959 ... LP
Fremeaux & Associates/Return To Analog (Canada), 1959. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A wonderful late 50s live recording from the Horace Silver Quintet – one that features some very long performances of key songs from the group's book, with some very extended solos, and a much different vibe than some of the studio versions! As with the Jazz Messengers during this time, the Silver group just couldn't miss – and they really brought something special to live performances, which could often give Horace space to be expressive in completely different ways, and the horn players a chance to state their genius even more than ever! In this case, the genius talents are Junior Cook on tenor and Blue Mitchell on trumpet – in the group with Gene Taylor on bass and Louis Hayes on drums. Titles include an 18 minute take on "Doodlin", a 12 minute take on "Senor Blues", and a long version of "Sweet Stuff". LP, Vinyl record album

Really great work from this French Canadian group – a contemporary set, but one that has lots of echoes of the past! There's a vibe here that has plenty of groovy 60s modes filtered through a 90s sensibility – somewhere in the territory of Stereolab, especially given the French lyrics – but with less electronics, and more catchy guitar overall! Production is nice and watery, too – maybe like Creation Records at its best – and vocals and main guitar are handled by the lovely Rachel Leblanc – on titles that include "Fleur", "Nouvelle Vague", "L'Ete Bleu", "Si Je Pleure", "Phoneme", "Les Jours Manques", and "Carte Du Ciel". Guy WarrenAfro Jazz (yellow vinyl pressing) ... LP
Columbia/Return To Analog (Canada), 1969. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99
A completely wonderful album from percussionist Guy Warren – a creative musician who made lots of great records over the years – but who maybe never topped himself after this gem from the late 60s UK scene! The set was done as part of the legendary Landsdowne Series for Columbia UK – and features Warren's percussion alongside some key Brit jazz talents – including Don Rendell on tenor and soprano saxes, Ian Carr on trumpet, Amancio D'Silva on guitar, and Michael Garrick on piano! Warren composed and arranged the whole thing, and brings in plenty of percussion too – but the album really gets its depth from the presence of these modern jazz giants – all of whom really shape the sound with wonderful contributions and some very strong solos. Titles include "Burning Bush", "I Love The Silence", "Africa Speaks India Answers", "Ours This Is Our Land", "Yaw Barima", "That Happy Feeling", and "Builsa". LP, Vinyl record album

Rare disco soul from Canada – the self-titled set from Zig Zag! The sounds range from tightly vamping funky guitar grooves, to spacier and synth-driven – but it's energetic dancefloor funk & soul all the way! The lyrics are sung in Quebecois French, often with a funky grit, but the longer cosmic soul instrumentals are in the driver's seat for the most part. Domino/MBV, 2013. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A surprising return to form for My Bloody Valentine – their first album in many years, and a set that's maybe got more freak and fuzz than the last few records that preceded it! Here, the group remind us that back in the mid 80s, they were one of the first to kickstart a new wave of psychedelic exploration that so many others followed in years to come – and despite the passage of years, they maybe sound better here than we ever could have expected – almost like they took a time machine back to Alan McGee's flat, and worked out the best part of their sound from scratch – then found a way to update it in very subtle ways, but without losing their charm at all. The sonic quality of the record is superb – and titles include "If I Am", "Is This Yes & Yes", "Only Tomorrow", "She Found Now", "Wonder 2", "Nothing Is", and "In Another Way". LP, Vinyl record album
