✨✧ Speedy West & Jimmy BryantStratosphere Boogie – The Flaming Guitars Of Speedy West & Jimmy Bryant ... CD
Razor & Tie, Early/Mid 50s. Used ... $7.99
Speedy West may be the greatest pedal steel slinger in the history of the instrument, and together with ace guitarist Jimmy Bryant they bridged the gap between the 50s Western swing of Bob Wills and the soon to arrive Sun Records sound with their pioneering country-jazz instrumentals. This is essential stuff for fans of traditional country stompers – or sweaty, swaggering boogie in any genre! Tracks include "Stratosphere Boogie", "Blue Bonnet Rag", "Cotton' Picking", "Old Joe Clark", "Slepwalker's Lullaby", "Arkansas Traveler", "The Night Rider", "Speedin' West", "Comin' On", "Bryant's Bounce", "Pickin' Peppers", "Shuffleboard Rag", "Filppin' The Lid" and lots more. Bobby WomackPoet ... CD
Beverly Glen/Razor & Tie, 1982. Used ... $9.99
The first of Bobby's highly successful Poet albums from the early 80s – wonderfully done albums that showed the world that he was still very much on top of his game at the time! The sound here is great – still with that older Womack rasp and warmth, but also done in a slightly smoother mode that grooves things up with some modern soul touches, yet never loses Bobby's charm! Tunefully, the record is one of his best in years – with some wonderful mellow soul groovers that never fail to delight – all produced with a warm California sound, and featuring some great backing vocals by The Waters and a host of other Womacks. Titles include "So Many Sides Of You", "Lay Your Lovin On Me", "Secrets", "Just My Imagination", "Games", "If You Think You're Lonely Now", and "Where Do We Go From Here". CD

✨✧ Booker T & The MGsUniversal Language ... CD
Elektra/Wounded Bird, 1977. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A sweet sweet set of electric 70s funk – recorded by Booker T during a brief, but well-needed reunion with the MGs! The sound here is quite different than Stax-era MGs – as Booker plays a range of keyboards, not just organ – and the grooves have these great jazz funk touches at the bottom – almost a CTI vibe at times, but packed with the tighter energy you'd expect from the group! Steve Cropper's guitar is great – super-fine, and razor-sharp – really helping cut a nice edge on the cuts – over bass from Donald Duck Dunn and drums from Willie Hall, who's the only new member of the group. In a way, the album feels like mid 70s efforts from Johnny Hammond or Jimmy Smith – sweetly soaring on a let-loose 70s vibe. Titles include the funky break track "Grab Bag", plus "Sticky Stuff", "Moto Cross", "Tie Stick", and "Space Nuts". CD

✨✧ Creedence Clearwater RevivalGreen River ... LP
Fantasy, 1968. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
Creedence Clearwater Revival at the height of their powers – working in this amazing style that has roots in the swamp rock world of the late 50s, but which is produced with a gritty, almost trippy sort of quality – a mode that uses plenty of echo to really make this magic around the edges of the music! John Fogerty's vocals and guitar are razor-sharp throughout – and some of the album's lesser-known gems really help you situate the sound of the group past their hits – as a way of getting at the power they brought to the Cali scene when they first emerged. Titles include the classic "Bad Moon Rising" – plus "Green River", "Commotion", "Wrote A Song For Everyone", "Lodi", "Cross Tie Walker", and "Sinister Purpose". LP, Vinyl record album
(Blue label stereo pressing. Cover has minor splitting in spots.)

Bacao Rhythm & Steel BandBacao Rhythm & Steel Band ... CD
Big Crown, 2016. New Copy ... $8.99 17.98
A fantastic full length set from the Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band – a group who've really won us over in recent years with a fast flurry of funky 45s! The group take an older steel band sound, and forge it to a might tighter rhythmic impulse – with a sound that's often even funkier than the best (and few) funky steel band tracks from the 70s – served up with razor-sharp instrumentation, and great production in a Daptone/Soul Fire mode – which really keeps things sounding raw all the way through! The group's got strong ties to the Mighty Mocambos – and some other contemporary funk acts too – and the music is top-shelf all the way through, a funkier full steel band record than you'll ever hope to find. Titles include "Beetham Highway Ride", "Scorpio", "Pimp", "Tropical Heat", "Laventille Road March", "Round & Round", "Port Of Spain Hustle", "Jungle Fever", "Love Like This", and "Dog Was A Doughnut". ✨✧ Kerbside CollectionRound The Corner ... LP
Legere (France), 2022. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
There's plenty of funky combos out there these days – but Kerbside Collection may well be quietly working to become one of the best – as there's a tightness and razor sharp focus here that really seems to blow away most of their contemporaries! The bass and drums are wonderful at the core – as sharp as in a classic combo, but never too slavish to old school styles either – which means that they're always working a rhythm that's funky, but fresh too – qualities that are definitely followed through by the guitar, keyboards, and saxophone parts as well. These guys have been slowly building up a legacy for the better part of the decade – and this set really gives them a chance to shine – on titles that include "New Day New Year", "Metalurgia", "Cookin With 3 Burners", "Round The Corner", "Curaidh", and "Ortigas". Little RoyalJealous ... LP
Trius/King, 1972. Sealed ... $19.99
An obscure little album – but one that's had surprising life in recent years, thanks to a great batch of funky tracks on the set! Little Royal is one of those soul singers who doesn't mind borrowing bits from bigger stars as long as they work well in his act – stepping out like Garland Green on the album's title version of "Jealous Kind Of Fellow" (oddly credited to Royal as the writer!), or like Joe Tex on some of the mellower southern soul numbers – but sounding even better as a rougher James Brown-styled singer on the album's funkier tracks! Huey P Meux produced the record down in Houston, but he's clearly trying to give the record some of the grittier styles of Brown's later work on King – possibly in the hopes that Royal might replace him as King's leading star when James departed for Polydor. Titles include the classics "Razor Blade" and "Panama Red", both great instrumental numbers that crackle like some of JB's late King work – plus "I'll Come Crawling", "Soul Train", "Losing Battle", "Jealous", and "My Love Needs Company". ✨✧ Osaka MonaurailRiptide ... CD
Unique (Germany), 2014. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Tremendous work from one of our favorite funk combos ever – Japan's legendary Osaka Monaurail, easily one of the sharpest, tightest, most soulful groups of the past 20 years! These guys have a really no-nonsense approach to funk – from the top to the bottom, from the execution to the production, from the street to the speaker – with a sound that's one of the few to really get a pure approach to the best funky 45 material of the late 60s and early 70s! There's no hoke, no easy references, no simplistic retro sensibilities – just rock-solid, razor-sharp instrumentation – at a level to match the James Brown band on late 60s King Records – who are clearly an inspiration for the crew. This set's got all their best funky 45 energy firmly intact, but also features a few longer numbers with sweet solos too – and as usual, the vocals are completely unique – raw funk, but with an accented twist that really grabs us. Titles include "(She's A) Riptide", "The Horse", "Liberty", "Solar Eclipse", "Calinga", "Fruit Basket", and "Determination". CD

✨✧ VariousAlgo Salvaje – Untamed 60s Beat & Garage Nuggets From Spain Vol 1 ... LP
Munster (Spain), Mid 60s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $39.99 44.99
Searing sounds from the Spanish scene of the 60s – a surprising hotbed of razor-sharp, guitar-driven, garage rocking bands! Other European scenes of the time are maybe better-known – especially the UK, Swedish, and German ones – but the work here is really stunning – and easily matches any of the best efforts coming from American cities like LA, Boston, or Seattle back in the day – as these cool quartets and quintets find a way to blend together raw guitar and jaunty vocals – sometimes with a slight dose of Brit Invasion inspiration as well! The package is great – very detailed notes, and lots of groovy photos – and the whole thing's a really thoughtful representation of a scene we never would have gotten to dig otherwise. Titles include "A Tu Vera" by Tomcats, "Antimusical" by Miguel Rios, "Aun" by Los Huracanes, "Yo Te Vi" by Los Impala, "Shake Baby Shake" by 4 Jets, "Dance The Pulga" by Los Brincos, "You Be" by The Canaries, "Mientes" by Lone Star, "It Is My World" by Prou Matic, and lots lots more!
