Aesop Rock and Blockhead have worked together before, but this is the first album to be fully produced by the latter – who really gives the whole thing a crisp, straightforward vibe that adds plenty to the urgency of Aesop's lyrics! The set was done during the pandemic, and has a stripped-down approach that actually seems to make the distance and separation work to its advantage – a mode that really strips things down to the core, and maybe has the rapper sounding more important than he has in years. A nicely trippy effort from Berlin prog maestros Agitation Free – a blend of spacey keys, intricate guitar work, and rewarding sounds that draw as much from hypnotic melodies as they do from spare dissonance! The band was experimenting with a mellotron this time out – tripping everything out just a little bit more and adding a bit of a groovier overall sound. Here's a heck of a deal if you're into CDs – at least 100 completely random bulk CDs from our bargain basement – all packaged together! The CDs are titles that hit the basement for a variety of reasons – some are titles we just don't sell well, some might have a flaw in the artwork, and a rare few might have an actual defect, like a skip on a track – although these are usually very few. The styles vary as much as the CDs – so you'll get a mix of many genres, as random as the artists and titles included in the box – very much like the boxes of random vinyl we sell here too. At this price, you're paying a nickel or less per CD – so you might even think about re-using the discs in creative ways – or maybe changing out the better jewel cases for some of the damaged ones in your collection! The Crusaders at their late 70s smooth jazz best – completely confident in the sound of their groove, and unabashedly working in a tight studio setting on longer tracks that helped forever change the sound of mainstream funky jazz! And yes, the edges are polished down from the group's earlier recordings – but in a way that only seems to deepen the soul of the tunes, and give them more direction and a solidly crossover feel that actually goes past the random funky jazz of the early and mid 70s. Sample, Felder, and Hooper are in fine form throughout – and as usual by this point, are working with a range of guest stars – including Will Jennings, who sings some great lead vocals on the "Street Life"-like "Soul Shadows" track that leads off the set. Never-heard music from the legendary Sun Ra Arkestra – pulled from four different sessions recorded at the group's Philadelphia home in 1969 – and every bit as impressive as the Saturn Records material from the time! The recording quality is great – these aren't random snippets of sounds caught on a cassette – and Ra's really trying out some new ideas with the Arkestra – sometimes working in highly percussive modes that feel like a late 60s update of the exoticism of the group in their final Chicago years – sometimes bringing in more electric elements, as Ra himself plays both Farfisa and a Hohner clavinet – no piano at all! Other players include the mighty John Gilmore on tenor, Doug Williams on trumpet and "space dimension mellophone", Marshall Allen and Danny Davis on altos and flutes, Danny Ray Thompson on alto, James Jacson on percussion – and all other members of the group play percussion too – which makes for plenty of percussive moments!
