✨✧ Jim Chapin & Bob WilberFor Drummers Only (aka Skin Tight – Profile Of A Jazz Drummer) ... LP
Music Minus One, Late 60s. Very Good+ ... $5.99
Drummer Chapin leads an all-star group that includes Phil Woods on alto, Urbie Green on trombone, Hank Jones on piano, Bob Wilber on tenor, and Wilber Ware on bass – all in a groove that's got the tightly arranged feel of some of the best work on Bethlehem Records from the 1950s. Chapin's drumming is hard and heavy – but never overdone, just nicely punctuated to keep the tunes flowing along – and the set features the tracks "Pink Ice", "Like Help", "I May Be Wrong", "Say What", and "I'll Take Romance". Harold McKinneyVoices & Rhythms Of The Creative Profile (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Tribe/Pure Pleasure (UK), 1974. New Copy (reissue)... $34.99 44.98
One of the most righteous albums ever issued by the always-righteous Tribe Records label of Detroit – a really collective effort, one that features ensemble vocals and spiritual jazz – all pulled together by pianist Harold McKinney! The album showcases a group named Voices Of The Creative Profile – formed by McKinney to accompany his Creative Profile instrumental group – and the overall style is a great blend of spiritual soul jazz that gives equal time to the voices and instruments in the set. Gwen McKinney heads up the vocal ensemble, and other players on the set include Wendell Harrison on flute, Marcus Belgrave on trumpet, Billy Turner on percussion, and Ed Pickins on bass. Also features some cool moog from Darryl Dybka – and titles that include "In The Moog", "Freedom Jazz Dance", "Dolphin Dance", "Heavenese", "Ode To Africa", "Out Of The Blues", and "Cornerstone". ✨✧ Modern Jazz QuartetLegendary Profile ... CD
Atlantic/Wounded Bird, 1972. New Copy ... $6.99 11.98
A cool 70s album from the Modern Jazz Quartet – and one that has John Lewis playing a bit of electric piano, in addition to his usual acoustic keys! At some level, it almost feels like the group's working off the lessons learned during their Apple Records years – and are also picking up some elements of Milt Jackson's work on other projects in the late 60s – as the record has a soulful groove you might not normally expect from the MJQ, and less of the more academic tones that had marked some of their earlier 60s recordings for Atlantic. Tunes are really nicely focused, but still have that strong sense of space and sound that's the Lewis' hallmark – and Jackson's nicely-pointed vibes sound really great next to Lewis' keys, whether acoustic or electric. Titles include "The Legendary Profile", "Valeria", "Misty Roses", "The Martyr", and "What Now My Love". CD

Ken RhodesProfile ... LP
Amayana/Sconsolato (Germany), 1974. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99
That's Ken Rhodes, not Fender Rhodes – but the acoustic pianist is more than funky enough on his own – even without any electricity in the mix! The set's got this wonderful rhythm duo – drummer George Greene and bassist Joachim Knauer – who often come on with this really full, frenzied approach – leaping forward along with Ken's tightly comping style on piano, so that the tunes almost hit this funk-modal style that's really unique – and completely sublime all the way through! A few mellower moments round things out nicely – and give the album a depth that recalls some of the Jazz Hip Trio records from the European scene of the same time. Titles include "The Profile", "Stay Be Me", "The Journey", "Triangle", "Eigoob", and "Nothing New". LP, Vinyl record album

Tough, righteous rap from King Sun – 1989's XL – a set that still looms large after all these years! King Sun dropped knowledge from a Five Percenter influence with a flow that's as smooth, solid and authoritive as any Bronx rapper of the day – and the production by Sun Born sounds great to this this day. This one was out of print for far too long! Includes "Hey Love", which uses the "Moments In Love" sample by Art Of Noise, and is standout produced by Cut Master DC. Also includes "Lethal Weapon", 'Ft Tape", "It's A Heat Up" and "Time To Go". Run-DMCRaising Hell ... LP
Profile, 1986. Very Good+ ... $44.99
The massive third album from Run DMC – made at the top of their game – an pivotal effort that brought them to peak popularity and helped break hip hop in a huge way in the pop culture landscape! Part of the album's strength is its guitar-heavy sound on some of the grooves – produced by Rick Rubin and Russell Simmons with a classic early Def Jam vibe, in the same manner that helped the Beastie Boys get their records in the hands of folks who'd never buy hip hop otherwise! That sound comes to culmination on the album's hit collaboration with Aerosmith on a remake of "Walk This Way", resulting in the commercial breakthrough, but the real triumph here is the increased complexity in both the lyricism, and the way Jam Master Jay serves up their beats – which makes for a stone classic all the way through, on tracks that include "Peter Piper", "It's Tricky", "My Adidas", "Proud To Be Black", "You Be Illin'", and more. Profile/Get On Down, 1984. New Copy (reissue)... $21.99 24.98
The classic self-titled debut LP from Run-DMC – one that not only changed hip hop, but much of modern pop and rock forever! There's little we can add to the canon for this record, but the way Run-DMC ushered in a new era in contemporary urban culture, a harder hitting style of rap that managed to bust out of the inner cities and into consciousness of an entire generation, was unforeseen and never to be duplicated to say the least. You can literally call this album revolutionary without sounding heavy handed, it's something very few artists can ever hope to achieve. Amazing! Tracks include "It's Like That", "Sucker MC's", "Rock Box", "Jay's Game", "Hard Times", "30 Days", "Hollis Crew", "Wake Up", and "It's Like That". LP, Vinyl record album

A real sleeper from the late 90s scene – a set that maybe didn't grab the charts as much as some of its major label hip hop contemporaries, but which has a lot more lasting power overall! There's a sense of variety to the songs here that's great – different themes, different modes, and a sense of production that's focused and to the point – very well-suited to the different lyrical modes throughout! Production is by Ski, rhymes by Sonny Cheeba and Geechi Suede, and the set features guest appearances from Trugoy, Ish, Jungle Brown, Bones, and Karachi Raw – on titles that include the classics "Luchini AKA This Is It", "Coolie High", and "Black Nostaljack AKA Come On" – plus "Rockin It AKA Spanish Harlem", "Sparkle", "Swing", "B-Side To Hollywood", and "Negro League". ✨✧ Quincy JonesCinema Of Quincy Jones (6CD box set) ... CD
Universal (France), 1960s/Early 70s. New Copy 6CD ... $34.99
A much-needed look at an overlooked side of the genius of Quincy Jones – not his jazz work, not his productions for famous soul artists, but instead his huge legacy of soundtrack material – a part of Q's career that really took off in the 60s! By the time he started working in films, Jones had already had a decade under his belt as one of the hippest arrangers, leaders, and composers in jazz – and the film business really respected those talents, and allowed Quincy to bring some really fresh styles into play – modes that really opened up the vibe of American cinema, and also paved the way for the funky styles of the 70s! As that decade approached, Jones left behind the cinema to take on some more higher-profile records of his own – but all the charms of those great albums can be found here at their roots – in this stunning collection of soundtrack material, some of which has never been on CD. The package is way more than just a sampler – and includes an album's worth of material from the films The Pawnbroker, Slender Thread, Mirage, The Deadly Affair, In The Heat Of The Night, In Cold Blood, Walk Don't Run, The Italian Job, Lost Man, and John & Mary – plus two versions of the love theme from The Getaway, and a bonus CD with 18 tracks – titled Q's highlights, and featuring tracks from his Mercury records – plus more by Billy Preston, Arthur Prysock, Bill Cosby, Shirley Horn, Letta Mbulu, Toots Thielemans, and others. Even features the "Sanford & Son" and "Ironside" themes! CD

Archie SheppSoul Song ... CD
Enja/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1982. New Copy ... $13.99 About November 17, 2021
An overlooked treasure from Archie Shepp – a set recorded for the Enja label with a profile that's not as bold as some of his other albums, but a great later session that has some surprisingly wonderful moments! Perhaps the best of these is the album's long workout on "Mama Rose" – done here as a free-flowing modal number with some great soprano sax lines from Archie – blown beautifully over soaring rhythms from Kenny Werner on piano, Santi DeBriano on bass, and the great Marvin Smitty Smith on drums. The track really cooks wonderfully – and is followed by the more sensitive "Soul Song", the hard-blown tenor cut "Geechee", and a laidback take on "My Romance". Both "Geechee" and "Mama Rose" dominate the record – and are perfect examples of the later soulful sound of Shepp in the post-Impulse years! CD

And she acquits herself quite well, with a solid performance that's more than respectable, helped along the way by sympathetic orchestral arrangements from Benny Golson and Oliver Nelson. Sanctuary, 2003. New Copy ... $3.99 19.98
A cool little retrospective of 50 years worth of manufactured pop music – one that starts out with the earliest roots of the genre in rock and roll, and follows it right up to present-day boy bands and studio acts! The book moves forward decade by decade, focusing on group after group – presenting them in mini-profiles that sometimes exposes hidden sides of the artists – especially those you might not normally think of as bubblegum acts! Obvious schlock is stacked next to more serious artists – in a unique take on the evolution of pop on both sides of the Atlantic. Artists include The Crystals, Ricky Nelson, Tommy Steele, Billy Fury, The Bay City Rollers, The Osmonds, David Cassidy, Bow Wow Wow, MC Hammer, Bucks Fizz, and a heck of a lot more! 167 pages, softcover, with images in color and black and white. ✨✧ B Astrid Daley & Adam Parfrey, edsSin-A-Rama – Sleaze Sex Paperbacks Of The Sixties (expanded edition) ... Book
Feral House, 2005. New Copy ... $18.99 25.95
The first book we've ever seen to fully do justice to the world of porn paperbacks in the 60s – that insanely profitable underground that existed in a space between girlie mags and cinematic pornography – when words enough were plenty to titillate the libido of a reader! Many of the publishers were secretive, distribution was often controlled by the mob, and some of the writers were bigger stars working under fake names for ready cash – all to create a surprisingly rich tapestry of work that's mostly been lost to the shifting sands of time! The large volume features many essays on different topics within the field – alongside an insane amount of full color images reproducing the paperbacks in all their glory – images that are far wilder than the one on the front of the book, and which make reading the text a complete delight throughout. The whole thing is way more than the usual fluff books that just present lurid paperbacks – as the writing is great, full of knowledge, and really gets at the heart of the matter – with profiles on writers that include Donald Westlake, Lawrence Block, Eric Stanton, Gene Bilbrew, Ron Haydock (aka Vin Saxon), and even Ed Wood – and contributions from Miriam Linna, Lydia Lunch, Robert Silverberg, and others. 327 pages, softcover, and full color throughout.
