✨✧ JamSetting Sons ... LP
Polydor, 1978. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The Jam close out the 70s with one of their greatest records – one that shows Paul Weller's songwriting skill in much more impressive light than on their earlier albums! Weller's really come into his own here as sharp-witted chronicler of daily life here, particularly from point of view of a young adult with vivid memory of his childhood – lyrically, it's excellent work, but in focusing too much on the songwriting craft you run the risk of glossing over just how exciting The Jam are as a band. The production is brighter and fuller bodied than before, but they're still a fierce band, really letting it rip at times, but increasing focus on melody and mood is pretty remarkable step forward. Titles include "Burning Sky", "Smithers Jones", "Eton Rifles", "Strange Town", "Thick As Thieves", and "Heat Wave" LP, Vinyl record album
(UK pressing with Strawberry stamp in the embossed cover, includes the printed inner sleeve. Cover is slightly wavy from moisture on back.)

✨✧ JBsDoing It To Death ... CD
Polydor/P-Vine (Japan), 1973. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An incredible album – a landmark piece of funk that nobody should be without, funk fan or not! The album is the second to feature James Brown's famous backing combo of the early 70s – and unlike their first one, which was really more of a collection of singles, this album has the group playing hard, long, and loud, in the free funk improvisational mode that was James' real contribution to the music at the time. The tracks are all incredibly long, with James at the forefront, egging the band on with shouts and comments – but also letting them open up large instrumentally, playing in a mode that's as much jazz as it is funky soul. The whole thing's peppered with some nice shorter segues between tracks – but the long cuts are the winners, and are some of the best funk ever recorded! Titles include "Mo Peas", "Doing It To Death", "La Di Da La Di Day", "You Can Have Watergate, Just Gimme Some Bucks & I'll Be Straight", and "Sucker". CD

✨✧ JBsFunky Good Time – The Anthology ... CD
Polydor, Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
A killer 2CD set of funky grooves by one of the best backing bands ever! The JBs were James Brown's legendary combo during his monster funk years of the early 70s – and this well-selected compilation brings together 30 rare tracks from their best years! The set's got a great set of notes – and it stretches beyond work by the JBs alone to include cuts from other groupings of the band, like Maceo & The Macks, The Last Word, The First Family, and The New JBs. Titles include "Rockin Funky Watergate", "Keep On Bumpin Before You Give Out Of Gas", "Soul Power 74", "My Brother (parts 1 & 2)", "The Grunt (parts 1 & 2)", "Dirty Harri", "More Peas", "Watermelon Man", "Givin Up Food For Funk (parts 1 & 2)", "JB Shout", "Blessed Blackness", "Same Beat (parts 1, 2, & 3)", and "Gimme Some More (Very Live)". Nice nice nice – and with a fair number of non-LP tracks! CD

✨✧ Toshinori KondoTaihen (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Polydor/Solid (Japan), 1984. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of those really unique records that trumpeter Toshinori Kondo gave us in the 80s – not really fusion, but not avant either all – yet a very unusual criss-crossing of electric and acoustic impulses, with a vibe that's all its own! Kondo's clearly drawing a bit of inspiration from the younger, artier crowd that was transforming other areas of music – and if he were in the US, we might say the whole thing had a downtown New York vibe – partly because Bill Laswell's working on the record, and adds in some tapes – alongside Kondo's work on trumpet, voice, toys, and "little instruments" – with Rodney Drummer on bass, Cecil Monroe on drums, and Yoshinori Teramae and Tiazo Sakai on guitars. Titles include "Taihen", "The Day After", "Takao Blue", "A Song For Buddha", and "Oiwake". CD also features two bonus Bill Laswell special mixes – of "Taihen" and "Shosuke San". CD

Rita LeeAtras Do Porto Tem Uma Cidade ... CD
Polydor (Brazil), 1974. New Copy ... $9.99
A wild solo project from Rita Lee – done after the breakup of Os Mutantes, and offered up almost as some sort of commentary on mainstream rock in the 70s! There's a much more straightforward approach to the music here – a sometimes-glammy sound that's echoed by the band's space-style costumes and makeup – but there's also some weirdly old-style rock instrumentation too, almost like the way that an artist like Gary Glitter could fold the 50s and 70s together in his music, and come across making something very weird and new. Here, the keyboards are almost stronger than the guitars – and Rita herself plays moog, melotron, organ, and piano – on titles that include "Tem Uma Cidade", "Menino Bonito", "Mame Natureza", and "Eclipse Do Cometa". ✨✧ Rita LeeHoje E O Primeiro Dia Do Resto Da Sua Vida (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Polydor/Polysom (Brazil), 1972. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A tripped-out batch of hard jamming tracks from ex-Mutante Rita Lee – recorded with assistance from all the members of the group at the time, but in a mode that's quite different overall! Lee is clearly the star of the show here – singing all lyrics with a much fiercer vocal approach than on her earlier solo album – pushing things hard to keep up with the jamming keyboards of Arnaldo Baptista and guitar of Sergio Dias – both of whom are working with the energy that would show up in the Mutantes styles in the years after Lee departed. One of the most compelling aspects of the record is the structure of the tunes – less conventionally rockish overall than the direction Os Mutantes were moving towards – and still with that strong dramatic flair that Lee always provided when in the group. Titles include "Vamos Tratar Da Saude", "Amor Branco E Preto", "Superficie Do Planeta", "Teimoisia", "Tapupukitipa", "Beija Me Amor", and "Frique Como". LP, Vinyl record album

A beautiful pairing of Michel Legrand and Stephane Grappelli – two of France's most sensitive jazz musicians ever, sounding really wonderful here in the company of each other! The set features Grappelli's violin and Legrand's lead piano – amidst some larger orchestrations put together by Michel, who also produced the set – all with that great balance of swing and sentiment that always makes his music so wonderful. Grappelli's gliding lines add a nice degree of lightness – especially when contrasted with the fuller string section – and titles include "Mon Homme", "Revoir Paris", "Theme From Summer Of 42", "Les Feuilles Mortes", "Parlez-Moi D'Amour", "Nuages", and "Milou En Mai". ✨✧ John Lennon/Yoko OnoMilk & Honey ... LP
Polydor, 1984. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
The second album released of material from the Double Fantasy sessions – released in 1984, years after John's murder, and record we can easily admit having a lot of affection for all these years later! The production has something of a rough, unfinished vibe to it – yet fairly conventional in instrumentation – with John's to-the-point lyricism working pretty well in that setting. Yoko's eccentric vocals – sometimes plaintive and intimate and at other points in a ghostly echo sound better on this record than she's ever been given credit for. Tender, affectionate John & Yoko – quite appropriate given the time of release and sad circumstances. Includes "I'm Stepping Out", "Sleepless Night", "I Don't Wanna Face It", "Don't Be Scared", "Nobody Told Me", "O'Sanity", "Borrowed Time", "Your Time", "Let Me Count The Ways", "You're The One" and more. Edu LoboSergio Mendes Presents Edu Lobo (Japanese pressing) ... CD
A&M/Polydor (Japan), 1969/1995. Used ... $14.99
The first (and maybe only) American release by one of the greatest Brazilian singer/songwriters of the sixties – and a record that's quite different than any Sergio Mendes work of the time, despite Sergio's name in the title! The vibe is like Lobo's best of Brazil from the late 60s – a post-bossa set that's quite complicated overall – rich in filling, and full of sweeping production, haunting compositions, and great jazzy arrangements. Players on the session include Hermeto Pascoal, Airto, Oscar Castro-Neves, Tiao Neto, and Claudio Slon – and Sergio Mendes was involved in the arrangements, but clearly the main focus was given to Lobo – as the overall quality is much deeper. The record includes great recordings of some of Edu's classic compositions – like "Zanzibar", "Ponteio", and "Casa Forte" – plus, it's got some other tracks that he never did before, like "Crystal Illusions", "Sharp Tongue", and "Hey Jude". Polydor (Brazil), 1970. New Copy (reissue)... $32.99 39.99
The incredible first album by Tim Maia – Brazil's greatest soul star in the 70s, and for good reason too – given that Tim was one of the few who could match the depth of American soul and funk at the time! Yet the music here is way more than just a Brazilian version of American soul – as Tim brings in some rootsier elements from local musical styles, and even some of the trippier elements that were running through Brazilian music in the wake of Tropicalia – all to make for this heady brew of sounds that's completely unique, and completely wonderful all the way through! There's plenty of tracks here that would fit well alongside both familiar soul, and the modes of funky artists like Marcos Valle at the time – and the set also features work on guitar and backup vocals by Cassiano, who'd soon go onto become a Brazilian soul star on his own. Titles include the break-heavy "Padre Cicero" and "Voce Fingiu" – plus "Tributo A Booker Pittman", "Cristina No 2", "Jurema", "Flamengo", "Corone Antonio Bento", and "Primavera". One of the funkiest records ever from Brazilian soul legend Tim Maia – and a set that also has him singing a bit of English language lyrics too! The groove here is that classic Maia blend of Brazilian roots with American funk and soul – echoes of forro or samba in some of the rhythms, mixed with psychedelic touches, and some harder-hitting funky lines too – all in a mindblowing blend that's perfectly topped with Maia's vocals – which are every bit as large and powerful as the man on the cover himself! Tim shifts effortlessly between Portuguese lyrics and American English – the latter of which really showcases his love of American soul on the titles"I Don't Know What To Do With Myself", "Broken Heart", and "I Don't Care". A great step forward for the legendary Tim Maia – working here in a style that's even tighter and more sophisticated than before – yet still equally filled with funk and soul! The arrangements are a bit bigger than before, and the production a bit more professional – but that change only brings Tim into even more heavenly soul territory – with a mix of grooves and strings that lays somewhere between the best early 70s work on labels like Curtom or Motown! Tim's got a new sense of majesty on the album – and also sings in English in a few spots – at a level that makes us wonder why he was never able to crack the American soul market at the time. An essential record from the man who brought American soul music to Brazil – with tracks that include "Over Again", "New Love", "O Balanco", "Reu Confesso", "Preciso Ser Amado", "Amores", and "Do Your Thing Behave Yourself". One of Junior Mance's best albums – done in a format that really worked best for him: larger arrangements in the back, which leave Junior free to handle the funky soloing in the front! In this case, the arrangements are done by William Fischer – who always manages to come up with some nicely-done backings that offer up a complicatedly grooving style that brings out the best in the lead soloist. One of the greatest records ever from Mandrill – a set that has the group tightening things up and getting even more funky than on their first few records, but with a vibe that's still nicely loose and spontaneous overall! The set's got Mandrill perfectly balanced between jazz-tinged funk and tighter soul – with loads of wonderful instrumental elements that have lead to the set being a heavy sample favorite over the years – used shamelessly by artists who include De La Soul, Cypress Hill, Schooly D, Ice Cube, and others! The horns are great, and never hokey at all – and the vocals nicely take second seat next to the rhythms, which are a tremendous blend of funk, jazz, and both New Orleans and Latin elements. John Mayall's definitely getting back to his roots here – and he's also getting help from an all-star cast as well! Mayall's vocals and piano are in fine form – almost with a rough-edged Blues Breakers sort of vibe, but sometimes a bit funkier too – in ways that strongly show the evolution of the older Brit blues groove into some hipper, more soul-drenched territory. Players on the record are a range of familiar names – including Eric Clapton on guitar, Johnny Amond on sax and flute, Harvey Mandel on guitar, Sugarcane Harris on violin, and Keef Hartley on some especially nice drums. Titles include "Prisons On The Road", "Groupie Girl", "My Children", "Home Again", "Blue Fox", "Boogie Albert", "Unanswered Questions", "Goodbye December", "Force Of Nature", and "Dream With Me". An album that definitely lives up to its title – as the set is definitely a turning point in the career of John Mayall, and the debut of brand new lineup that helped move his music past a the straighter sound of American blues! There's still plenty of blues at the core – and great vocals and harmonica from the leader – but the lineup also features no drums at all, which gives very open space to freeplay between the acoustic guitar of Jon Mark, the bass of Steve Thompson, and the wicked work of Johnny Almond on tenor, alto, and flute! The jazzy elements that Almond brings to the music are wonderful – and really open up the sound, and showcase a whole new side of Mayall's talents too – as the group here play live at the Fillmore East, on titles that include "The Laws Must Change", "California", "I'm Gonna Fight For You JB", "Room To Move", and "Saw Mill Gulch Road". The approach on this record is kind of like a mixture between Chaka Khan and Joni Mitchell – lots of upbeat grooves, mixed with jazzy acoustic guitar and some wonderfully soaring vocals – in a style that needs to be heard to be fully understood. The standout cut is the amazing "Jimmy Jean", a soaring jazzy dance cut with unbelievable vocals – and other nice ones include "Sliding", "Ain't No Two Ways", and "All To You". LP, Vinyl record album

An incredibly sophisticated album from one of our favorite modern soul singers! This stunning 2CD set goes farther than Monday Michiru's ever gone before – into territory that bridges together modern soul, jazz vocals, Latin rhythms, and a complicated set of emotional soundscapes that show Monday as a much more mature singer than ever before. The 2CD set features a total of 20 tracks in all – some from the "4 Seasons" cycle of eps that Monday released over the year 2000, and many more that are exclusive to the album. We'd only gotten a hint of the place she was heading with some of the singles – and this full album really comes together in an amazing way, with a wealth of influences and styles that reminds us of Nobukazu Takemura's legendary Child's View album. Titles include "Tahitian Xmas", "Restless", "Early Dawn", "The Island", "Do It Again", "Kohyo", "Something To Believe In", "Chasing After The Sun", "Mysteries Of Life", "Fallin", "Stop & Listen", "New Beginnings", and "Chances". Great work from our favorite Japanese soul star – a nice batch of remixes, filled with guest appearances by the likes of Incognito, Basement Jaxx, Shinichi Osawa, Soul Society, Byron Wallen, Rob Playford, and others – all packaged in an extremely captivating cover with great graphics! Titles include "You Make Me (Shin Shin's Mix)", "Yellow Bird (Incognito Capoeira Mix)", "Cruel 2 Be Kind (Basement Jaxx Nite Dub)", "Change Of Scenery", "Double Image (Live At Manic One Remix)", "Love Flow (Mango Margarita Mix)", and "Freed Or Bound (Reconsideration Mix)". Very nice stuff, with more focus on the dancefloor side of Monday's work, than the pop-hook sort of side. A mixture of jazzy bits, drum and bass bits, and lots more! CD

Polydor (Japan), Late 90s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A great selection of tracks by one of the best soul singers of the past few decades! Japanese/American vocalist Monday Michiru's been one of the few new artists we've supported heavily since our "dusty" past – and this 12 track set is a wonderful sampling of tracks she's recorded over the past few years, years that have seen Monday move into a variety of new styles, ever expanding her creative range to always keep us coming back for more! There's some numbers on here that are lifted from hard to find singles, plus more that stand out as some of her best LP tracks of recent years – and titles include "Play It By Ear", "Emerald Life (Nunca Tan Fermosa Cosa Vido)", "You Make Me", "Chances", "Full Bottle Of Soul", "Do It Again", "Stop & Listen", "Supirar", "Fallin (Indian Summer mix)", "Chasing After The Sun (barefood n pregnant version)", and "Thinking Of You". Anthony MoorePieces From The Cloudland Ballroom ... LP
Polydor/Wah Wah (Spain), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99
The first solo album from Anthony Moore – best known as one of the founding members of Slapp Happy, but here emerging as a hell of a contemporary composer – with an approach that ties together the avant and underground rock worlds of the early 70s – a bit like some of the Brian Eno-produced albums on the Obscure label! "Jam Jem Jim Jom Jum" is a long piece that takes up all of side one – and features five voices each repeating different passages, and shifting in space – essentially the words "Jam", "Jem", "Jim", "Jom", "Jum", and "Ba" – which are phrased differently, in different phases, and combined with some really cool keyboards. "Mu Na Huile Ni A Shaoileas Iad" is a keyboard piece – and has a vibe that's almost like a slow-moving Terry Riley piece, but with more "crystal" sounding keyboards. "ABCB Gol'Fish" is another keyboard number, with some snapping hi-hat alongside the pulse – all ringing out in a beautiful minimalist groove! LP, Vinyl record album

Polydor/Wah Wah (Spain), 1972. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Really lovely work from Anthony Moore – a contemporary composer in the early 70s, but one with strong ties to the art work world too! The set was done right before Moore's debut album with Slapp Happy – and features a string trio and a female voice – all spun out in these long, cyclical passages – at a level that's almost like a meeting of older string chamber modes and the energy of the Terry Riley generation! The album's sub-titled as "A Story For John Cage" – but has a vibe that's much more lovely and tuneful than any of his music – and which is almost a precursor to some of the work to come on the Obscure or Editions EG labels. Shuichi Ponta MurakamiIntroducing Ponta Murakami ... CD
Polydor/Universal (Japan), 1976. Used ... $24.99
The first album as a leader from Japanese drummer Shuichi Ponta Murakami – a set done in close collaboration with Jun Fukamachi – who not only produced and arranged, but also adds in a lot of keyboards too! Some of the best cuts here have that sense of angular interplay and whimsy that you'll know from Fukamachi's own recordings – but they're also driven at a higher speed, too – thanks to Ponta's talents on the drums, which are already pretty darn great – showing the young drummer as a fusion force to be reckoned with! There's lots of energy here – and the whole thing maybe lives up to the dynamic energy of the cover, with a different vibe than some of the more soulful Japanese fusion albums of the time. Titles include "Contact Point", "Absolute Space", "Symptom Angel", "Song For Nabi", "Triaxial Development", and "Dance Of The Paranois". CD

✨✧ Teruo NakamuraManhattan Special (aka Song Of The Birds) ... LP
Polydor, 1977. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Seminal work from bassist Teruo Nakamura – one of the few Japanese fusion players of the 70s to make a bit of a splash over on this side of the Pacific, thanks to wickedly soulful work like this! Teruo's getting some great help here from a handful of American players – including the legendary Harry Whitaker on electric piano, fresh from some key work with Roy Ayers – plus Carter Jefferson on tenor and soprano sax, and Mark Gray on additional keys. In addition, album's filled with guest appearances that range from Herbie Hancock to Lani Groves to Art Webb, and others – and the groove is a mixture of spacey funky and smoother, more soul-oriented tracks – sometimes with bigger backings, in kind of a Kudu Records sort of mode. Lots of nice numbers – including "Wiggle Worm", "Mr Cherry & Mr T", "Sunrise In Africa", "Mescalito", and "Firefly". LP, Vinyl record album

O BandoO Bando ... CD
Polydor/Discos Mariposa (Argentina), 1969. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Heavy fuzz from late 60s Brazil – a Tropicalia-era album, but one with a slightly more mainstream groove – one that mixes elements of regional music with psychedelic elements and bouncy, mod-styled backings! The approach is somewhat like the work going on over at EMI/Odeon during the time – although there's certainly a trippier side to the record as well, thanks to arrangements from Rogerio Duprat, Damiano Cozzela, and Julio Medagalia. There's a fair bit of groovers on the record – although in a somewhat offbeat mode – nestled nicely next to a few headier tunes that help balance out the whole set wonderfully. Titles include "Alegria Alegria", "Quem Sabe", "Que Maravilha", "Fossa Boboca", "Longe Do Tempo", "Pela Rua Da Praia", and "Vou Buscar Voce". CD

Polydor/Tidal Waves, 1978. New Copy (reissue)... $23.99 26.98
The fourth and final album from Ofege – and a set that shows the Nigerian group still very much at the top of their game – soaring out on fast funk rhythms that often echo American styles of the time, but with a lot more edge – and produced with all these cool trippy touches around the edges, which serve to fold together the musical elements in a really unique way! The vibe is different than both the larger Afro Funk combos of the period, and some of the crossover disco/boogie that was beginning to come into the mix – very standout, very unique work that really sets the group apart from the rest. The second set of madness from the legendary Os Mutantes – and like the first, an album done in close collaboration with arranger/producer Rogerio Duprat, whose talents add a new level of genius to the record! The album's got a compelling mix of styles that strikes out on the very first tune – a playful pastiche that's partly postmodern, partly psychedelic, and still tremendously powerful decades later – even if you can't understand most of the lyrics! Styles are just about impossible to pin down, but that's what makes the record so unique and essential – and if you ever needed one album to convince you of the mindblowing energy taking place during the Tropicalia years, this one may well be it! A few tracks are written by Tom Ze, and titles include "Dom Quixote", "Dia 36", "Magica", "Rita Lee", "Algo Mais", "Qualquer Bobagem", and "Fuga No II". LP, Vinyl record album

Polydor/Polysom (Brazil), 1968. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A landmark album from late 60s Brazil! This is the first – and the wildest – album by this legendary group that was one of the founding forces of the Tropicalia movement – a brilliant musical statement that easily ranks with some of the most groundbreaking late 60s American work by The Velvet Underground, Captain Beefheart, or The Stooges! The music is a wonderful blend of 60s rock and early MPB – hard-driving with plenty of guitars, but also produced with beautifully baroque touches that echo through simultaneous albums by Caetano Veloso and Gal Costa – both of whose 1969 albums are strongly resonant with this one. In fact, Caetano contributed a number of tracks to the album, including "Panis et Circenses", "Bat Macumba", "Trem Fantastma", and his great "Baby", which is done fantastically here. Great stuff all 'round! LP, Vinyl record album

A very unique session that features the often-modern tenor sax of Lucky Thompson in the company of bluesman Sammy Price, who plays piano and sings on a number of the tracks on the record. Amazingly, Thompson's raspy tenor tone is a perfect fit with the style of the recording – laying down lean blusey licks that really work nicely with Price's barrelhouse piano style, and which also give it a bit more of a jazz-oriented style than usual. The rest of the group features Pierre Michelot on bass, Jean-Pierre Sasson on guitar, and Gerard Pochonet on drums. Like everyone else, we're rethinking our distaste for fusion, and this set finds Chick Corea, Lenny White, Stanley Clarke and Bill Connors going all out from the get go, though our favorite track, "Space Circus" provides a nice breather, with an excellent electric piano intro, and a syncopated funky-ish groove in the main part of the tune that lives up to its name. Sweet electro soul from Second Image – a group who manage to mix in plenty of beats and keyboards to their groove, yet never let the music get too cold! There's a playful sort of feeling to most numbers here – a style that's a bit different than US electro of the time, with less of a street soul quality to the rhythms, although there are a few nicely bumping tracks on the set that might have made some noise in the linoleum-on-sidewalk scene. The group were a leading light in 80s fusion, and with records like this it's easy hear why – thanks to well-played keyboards from Bill Sharpe – handled with a spaciously stepping groove that underscores the more soulful leanings of the group. The vibe here is similar to Tinderbox – surprisingly catchy at times, yet still with that balanced sense of drama that Siouxie could bring to her music – on tunes that include their hit remake of "The Passenger", plus "This Wheel's On Fire", "Strange Fruit", "Sea Breezes", "Little Johnny Jewel", "Hall Of Mirrors", and "Trust In Me". Groovy genius from German arranger Peter Thomas – a sweet little follow-up to his soundtrack for Chariots Of The Gods! This time around, the setting's a bit more funky – a great mixture of mid 70s grooves with some of the trippier touches you'd know from Peter's previous space scores – all wrapped up with impeccable German production that really makes the whole thing sparkle! Toto seems like an odd choice for a movie directed by David Lynch – but in their own sort of way, they do a pretty decent job on their own tracks here – catchy numbers that were probably used by the studio to try to make a bit more sense of the narrative – and things are balanced out a bit by one contribution from Brian Eno, the nice "Prophecy Theme" in the film. A really standout set from Brazilian rocker Ronnie Von – easily one of his greatest records ever, and a set that shows some wonderful steps forward in production and arrangements! Ronnie's still got a rock approach at his core, but he's often working here with fuller backings that include strings and large orchestrations – all blended with key psychedelic elements of the time, in ways that are a fair bit like some of the best productions from the Cadet Concept series – especially the work of Rotary Connection! Like that group, Ronnie's music here draws from the familiar, then pushes its boundaries – taking the music into unexpectedly majestic territory, but still making it groove in the end. Great credit should certainly go to arrangers Francisco De Moraes and Djama Mellin – and titles include "Enseada", "Imagem", "Seu Olhar No Meu", "Verao Nos Chama", "A Maquina Voadora", "Cidade", and "Voce De Azul". Polydor/Discos Mariposa (Argentina), 1969. Used ... $16.99
Great late 60s work from Ronnie Von – an under-appreciated Brazilian rocker, and one with a sound that sits nicely between the Jovem Guarda generation and some of the headier groups to come in the 70s! There's a nice array of psychedelic influences at play here – strong echoes of British work of the time, but used in much more sophisticated ways than any Jovem Guarda acts – never a simple copycat approach, but also never as arty as some of the Tropicalia recordings of the time either. Ronnie's voice has a depth that allows some nice changes in mood from track to track – lightly lyrical one moment, a bit darker and more tripped-out the next – bringing a sense of variety to the record that almost recalls Caetano Veloso during the time, but a bit more rockish overall. Titles include "Atlantica", "Dindi", "De Como Meu Heroi Flash Gordon", "Foi Bom", "Rose Ann", "Comeci Uma Brincadeira", and "Mares De Areia". ✨✧ Link WrayLink Wray ... LP
Polydor/Future Days, 1971. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A weird and wild little record – and one that came as quite a surprise to folks who'd previously known Link Wray as the king of the raunchy guitar instrumental in the 60s! Here, Link sings as well as plays – working in his legendary Three Track Shack, which was located in Maryland, but has a vibe that feels like it came right out of the Louisiana swamps! The style of the music follows suit – almost as if Link saw folks like Tony Joe White, Bobby Charles, and some of their contemporaries – and tried to find his unique take on the raunchy blend of roots rock, country, and maybe some occasional funky currents. Polydor cleaned the album up a bit for release – but no too much – and titles include "Juke Box Mama", "Rise & Fall Of Jimmy Stokes", "La De Da", "Black River Swamp", "Tail Dragger", "Ice People", and "Fire & Brimstone". VariousJames Brown's Funky People Part 1 ... LP
Polydor/Get On Down, Early 70s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $24.99 30.98
Part 1 of the legendary compilation series of James Brown Productions for his own People Records imprint – with monster tracks by The JBs, Lyn Collins, and Maceo! Now a long-established treasure trove of stone classic funky soul, it's easy to forget that the deeper legacy of the People Records roster was pretty well overshadowed by James Brown's pivotal figure for quite a few years before this hugely necessary series. It was a sampler's dream in the 80s, and it's still a listener's dream – and a vital overview of once overlooked gems! Tracks include "Same Beat" by the Fred Wesley & The JBs, "Parrty" by Maceo & The Macks, "If You Don't Get It The First Time" by Fred Wesley & The JBs, "Take Me Just As I Am" by Lyn Collins, "Rock Me Again & Again & Again & Again" by Lyn Collins, "Hot Pants Road" by The JBs, "Mama Feelgood" by Lyn Collins, "Think" by Lyn Collins, and "Gimme Some More" by The JBs! One of the best-ever compilations of James Brown productions – and the second slammin' hard compilation of great tracks from the People label. This one's got some more obscure stuff (including 2 previously unreleased tracks), and material by Bobby Byrd, Vicki Anderson, Maceo, Marva Whitney, Hank Ballard, and more! The groove's tight and hard, and tracks include "Do Your Thing" by Lyn Collins, "Cross The Track" by Maceo & The Macks, "I Know You Got Soul" by Bobby Byrd, "From The Love Side" by Hank Ballard & The Midnight Lighters, "What Do I Have To Do To Prove My Love To You" by Marva Whitney, the massive "Message From the Soul Sisters" by Vicki Anderson (an incredible track with a great sample) and more! ✨✧ Roy AyersSilver Vibrations ... CD
Uno Melodic/BBE (UK), Early 80s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A fantastic lost chapter in the career of genius soul/jazz/funk maestro Roy Ayers – a set that was only ever issued in the UK, and which is a great second part to his Lots Of Love album on the Uno Melodic label! This album features a few tracks from that gem, but in longer versions – mixed with other cuts that were never issued in the US at the time – all with that return to perfection that Roy found on Uno Melodic – which was his own label, and one of the few times in the 80s when he matched the brilliance of his 70s recordings on Polydor! Like those albums, the style here is tight and right in the pocket, but also full of meaning and message too – beautiful songs that are catchy, but far from commercial – funky, but never dance music in a conventional way. The set kicks off with a 7:20 minute version of "Chicago" – one of our favorite Roy Ayers songs ever, natch – and other cuts include "Smiling With Our Eyes", "Good Good Music", "Keep On Movin", "Silver Vibrations", "DC City", and "Lots Of Love". BBE (UK), Late 70s. New Copy ... $14.99 16.99
It's like a dream come true – 13 previously unissued recordings by Roy Ayers, all from the height of his glory years on Polydor! Roy's work from this time is some of our favorite ever – a burning blend of jazz, soul, and funk – handled with impeccable charm, and a level of soul that few other artists of the time ever matched. Roy's genius was strongly documented at the time by a series of excellent Polydor albums – but there was also a heck of a lot of great material that never saw the light of day, and which is every bit as great as the classics that we've come to know and love over the years. Hearing this set is incredible – like upping our already-massive appreciation of Roy's talents, and like finding a lost corner of soul music history that nobody's ever heard before. The tunes are all amazing – a great blend of jazzy soul, mellow soul, and dancefloor groovers – and the package is only the tip of the iceberg, from what we've been told! The full album does a great job to not cross over too much with the 12" singles previously issued in this "Virgin" series – and titles include "What's The T", "I Really Love You", "Sugar", "Mystery Of Love", "Green & Gold", "Brand New Feeling", "I Did It In Seattle", "I Just Wanna Give It Up", "Together Forever", "Boogie Down", "I Am Your Mind", and a great alternate version of "Mystic Voyage"!
