Max GregerChristmas Wonderland ... CD
Polydor/Jazzclub (Germany), Late 70s. New Copy ... $9.99
Christmas magic from German reedman Max Greger – served up in a richly sentimental mode that's just right for the Holiday – yet with a few groovy touches too! Most tracks have the sparkling polish you'd guess from Greger's image on the cover – rooted in jazz, but given lots of German easy instrumental touches – especially that smooth approach that was used heavily in the economic boom of the 70s – a nice way to serve up the sentiment without ever getting too cloying. Titles include "Silent Night", "Sleigh Ride", "Snowfall", "Winter Dancing", "Ave Marie", "O Tannebaum", "Jingle Bells", and a number of medly tracks too! CD

✨✧ Dave GrusinOne Of A Kind (GRP pressing) ... LP
Polydor/GRP, 1977. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
Dave Grusin made a few sleepy albums in his day, but this isn't one of them – and instead, it's a sweet funky fusion outing that really sums up some of the best Dave Grusin modes of the 70s! This excellent LP from 1977 really captures the best of the Grusin soundtrack style – heard in the 70s on shows like Barretta, or in films like Three Days of the Condor – mellow fusion with a tightly arranged style – lots of nicely isolated instrumentation, and the kind of spare and spacey grooves that you'd expect from a hip CTI session! Musicians include Grover Washington on saxes, Dave Valentin on flute, Ron Carter on bass, and Steve Gadd himself – plus Grusin on a lot of sweet keyboards – and titles include great cut "Modaji", plus "Heart Is A Lonely Hunter", "Catavento", and "Montage". Alex Harvey & His Soul BandShout ... LP
Polydor/Universal (UK), 1964. Near Mint- ... $19.99
The lost second album from the young Alex Harvey and his Soul Band – a group who really live up to their name, and really take off with even more frenzy than on their debut! There's maybe a stronger blues rock punch here – of the sort that Harvey would be known for by the end of the 60s – but the tunes are also short, and more soul-based overall – yet manage to have more than enough space for some fantastic freakouts on tenor and guitar! Harvey's already a hell of a singer at this point, and along with the amazing instrumentation of the group, even familiar numbers are really transformed. Titles include "Ten A Penny", "Canoe Song", "You Ain't No Good To Me", "Sticks & Stones", "Shout", "Long Long Gone", and "Take Out Some Insurance On Me Baby" – plus a version of "Shakin All Over" that may well blow away The Who Live At Leeds! ✨✧ Richie HavensMixed Bag ... CD
Polydor, 1967. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The genius of Richie Havens at this point is beyond compare – a unique take on the dying folk sound of the 60s, one that infused it with a deeper sense of soul that helped it get new legs in the Woodstock generation – yet which is also heard here before any of the post-hippie cliches that would bog down some of Richie's later work. There's an earnestness to this music that's also touched with a good degree of worldly sense – a notion that the world was changing, but one person at a time, and mostly through the gentle efforts and honest efforts of souls like Richie. This LP features 11 tracks in all – with titles that include "High Flyin' Bird", "San Francisco Bay Blues", "Just Like A Woman", "Sandy", "Three Day Eternity", "Follow", and "Handsome Johny". CD

HelloHello Again (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Polydor/7T's (UK), 1978. New Copy ... $6.99 13.99
Hello have cleaned up their look a bit from previous records, but they're still hitting hard in that glam-inspired groove we love so much! Guitars are fuzzy, the vocals flanged-out too, and even though the rhythms are tight, there's a spooky sort of mid-70s pop vibe going on overall – an undercurrent of nastiness that hides beneath the group's power pop look and catchy tune hooks. Production is relatively simple too – somewhat smoother than before, but still with more than enough rough edges in the right parts. Titles include "99 Ways", "Back Seat Talking", "The Cat Is Wild", "You Shot Me Down", "Oh Caroline", "How To Survive The Night", "Walking Midnight", "Elenore", and "Hi Ho Silver Lining". CD also features 8 more bonus tracks that include "Good Old USA", "Too Much Hesitating", "Night Watcher", "One By One", and "You Got Class Babe". CD

One of Wayne Henderson's best albums as an artist from the 70s – next to countless excellent work he handled as a producer! The set's got a gentle jazz funk groove overall – similar to Henderson's best At-Home productions for other groups, and performed with a host of great talents that include Bobby Lyle, Ronnie Laws, and Roland Bautista. Most tracks have a core funky jazz groove, but add in a bit of vocals – from singers that include Syreeta, Jim Gilstrap, Augie Johnson, and Myrna Matthews. Titles include the spacey "Mysterious Maiden", plus "Hot Stuff", "Rollin On", "You Think Of Her", "Living On A Dream", and a nice cover of "Midnight At The Oasis". LP, Vinyl record album

Fantastic work by this underdiscovered Brazilian talent! Hyldon was part of the 70s Brazilian soul and funk generation that included Tim Maia, Cassiano, and Toni Tornado – but he'd also absorbed a lot of the singer/songwriter influences of Caetano Veloso, who's laidback mid 70s style will come to mind on a number of these tracks! Hyldon's got a warmly intimate voice – set here in arrangements by Roberto Bertrami that have a bit of jazz and electric sparkle, kind of in a mellow soul mode that really works great for Hyldon's style. LaToya JacksonMy Special Love (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Polydor/Cherry Pop (UK), 1981. New Copy ... $12.99
Long before Janet Jackson hit the spotlight, sister LaToya was the leading female star of the Jackson family – really stepping out with a great sort of sound on an early record like this! LaToya works with warm production from Ollie Jackson – an early 80s groovemeister who was doing great things to help people push past the sound of disco from a few years before – including picking up a few beats from the streets, which he uses nicely here to help Jackson advance her sound! The music has some poppy currents at times – no surprise for any member of the family – but LaToya also slinks out with her own nicely soulful take on the lyrics, making the record one of the real standouts in her catalog. Titles include "Stay The Night", "Fill You Up", "Giving You Up", "Love Song", "Summertime With You", "Love Song", and "I Don't Want You To Go". CD features bonus tracks – "Stay The Night (special maxi version)", plus 7" versions of "If You Feel The Funk", "Are You Ready", "Stay The Night", "I Don't Want You To Go", and "Love song". CD

Polydor, 1980. Used ... $4.99
A great later record by The Jam – a little bit of a step back into a rawer sound than they're somewhat slick sounding Setting Sons from the year before – but it's ultimately a pretty big creative step! While the sound a little more raw than on Setting Sons, The Jam is diversely inspired here as ever – really kind of achieving a deft balance between the feral energy of their earliest records and the moody mod melodicism of their more manicured work. Includes a couple of their greatest songs, too! Titles include "Pretty Green","Monday", "But I'm Different Now", the all time greats "Start" and "That's Entertainment", "Scrape Away", "Dream Time", Man In The Corner Shop" and "Music For The Last Couple". A seminal session from 70s French synth maestro Jean-Michel Jarre – his 8-part "Equinoxe" suite, a great bit of electronics that was almost France's answer to Kraftwerk at the time! Jarre's style is a bit warmer and more focused on the melody – and the range of keyboards and synthesizers used on the album create a rich tapestry of sound that almost has a soundtrack-y feel at the best moments. One of the most fantastic albums by the JBs – a masterpiece of funky jamming, tight instrumentation, and that free yet tight style of the James Brown 70s years! The tracks are longer than on some of the earlier singles – especially the 8 minute jammer "(It's Not The Express) It's the JBs Monourail", an answer to BT Express' theme song, and a fantastic cut that's held up through so many years and so many scenes! Another great jammer is the group's version of "Thank You For Letting Me Be Myself", which runs for nearly 10 minutes – plus spacey funk tracks "Transmogrification" and "Taurus, Aires, & Leo", and the tighter jammer "Soul Funky Train", which returns to the group's funky 45 mode. Rita LeeAtras Do Porto Tem Uma Cidade ... CD
Polydor (Brazil), 1974. New Copy ... $15.99
A wild solo project from Rita Lee – done after the breakup of Os Mutantes, and offered up almost as some sort of commentary on mainstream rock in the 70s! There's a much more straightforward approach to the music here – a sometimes-glammy sound that's echoed by the band's space-style costumes and makeup – but there's also some weirdly old-style rock instrumentation too, almost like the way that an artist like Gary Glitter could fold the 50s and 70s together in his music, and come across making something very weird and new. Here, the keyboards are almost stronger than the guitars – and Rita herself plays moog, melotron, organ, and piano – on titles that include "Tem Uma Cidade", "Menino Bonito", "Mame Natureza", and "Eclipse Do Cometa". Rita LeeHoje E O Primeiro Dia Do Resto Da Sua Vida (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Polydor/Polysom (Brazil), 1972. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $32.99
A tripped-out batch of hard jamming tracks from ex-Mutante Rita Lee – recorded with assistance from all the members of the group at the time, but in a mode that's quite different overall! Lee is clearly the star of the show here – singing all lyrics with a much fiercer vocal approach than on her earlier solo album – pushing things hard to keep up with the jamming keyboards of Arnaldo Baptista and guitar of Sergio Dias – both of whom are working with the energy that would show up in the Mutantes styles in the years after Lee departed. One of the most compelling aspects of the record is the structure of the tunes – less conventionally rockish overall than the direction Os Mutantes were moving towards – and still with that strong dramatic flair that Lee always provided when in the group. Titles include "Vamos Tratar Da Saude", "Amor Branco E Preto", "Superficie Do Planeta", "Teimoisia", "Tapupukitipa", "Beija Me Amor", and "Frique Como". LP, Vinyl record album

An incredible later meeting by two of the most sophisticated musical talents of the bossa generation – and a record that's done in the same intimate, spare setting as Jobim's meeting with Elis Regina a few years before! Production is by bossa legend Aloysio De Oliveira – and the sound is relatively clean and simple – often just a bit of piano, guitar, and percussion behind the up-close and personal vocals of the tunes. Lobo & Jobim sing together on most of the record – in a double-voiced style that's almost a bit like that used on Jobim's incredible Matita Pere record from the 70s. Edu sings solo on "Chovendo Na Roseira", Tom sings solo on "Angela" – and the pair duet on the tracks "Canto Triste", "Vento Bravo", "Moto Continuo", "Pra Dizer Adeus", "Ai Quem Me Dera", and "Luiza". Tim MaiaO Melhor De Tim Maia – Vou Pedir Pra Voce Voltar ... CD
Polydor/Universal (Brazil), 1970s/Early 80s. Used ... $7.99
A nice 14 track sampler of the best work by Brazilian soul singer Tim Maia from the early 1970s through the early 1980s. Unlike many other Brazilian singers Maia's style has a lot of US soul influences in it, especially as he moves more into his modern soul work of the early 80s. The sound is certainly different than the majority other Brazilian titles we stock from the same era, but it's also unique from US soul music, though you can certainly here how Maia's taken a lot of the influences from that music, and turned them into his own crazy style of Brazilian pop. Titles include the tracks "Gostava Tanto De Voce", "Voce", "A Festa Do Santo Reis", "Primavera", "Azul Da Cor Do Mar", "Reu Confesso", and "Eu Amo Voce". CD

The incredible first album by Tim Maia – Brazil's greatest soul star in the 70s, and for good reason too – given that Tim was one of the few who could match the depth of American soul and funk at the time! Yet the music here is way more than just a Brazilian version of American soul – as Tim brings in some rootsier elements from local musical styles, and even some of the trippier elements that were running through Brazilian music in the wake of Tropicalia – all to make for this heady brew of sounds that's completely unique, and completely wonderful all the way through! There's plenty of tracks here that would fit well alongside both familiar soul, and the modes of funky artists like Marcos Valle at the time – and the set also features work on guitar and backup vocals by Cassiano, who'd soon go onto become a Brazilian soul star on his own. Titles include the break-heavy "Padre Cicero" and "Voce Fingiu" – plus "Tributo A Booker Pittman", "Cristina No 2", "Jurema", "Flamengo", "Corone Antonio Bento", and "Primavera". One of the funkiest records ever from Brazilian soul legend Tim Maia – and a set that also has him singing a bit of English language lyrics too! The groove here is that classic Maia blend of Brazilian roots with American funk and soul – echoes of forro or samba in some of the rhythms, mixed with psychedelic touches, and some harder-hitting funky lines too – all in a mindblowing blend that's perfectly topped with Maia's vocals – which are every bit as large and powerful as the man on the cover himself! Tim shifts effortlessly between Portuguese lyrics and American English – the latter of which really showcases his love of American soul on the titles"I Don't Know What To Do With Myself", "Broken Heart", and "I Don't Care". The album also features a version of Marcos Valle's "Preciso Aprender A Ser So", plus the cuts "Meu Pais", "A Festa Do Santo Reis", "Nao Vou Ficar", and "Salve Nossa Senhora" – all wonderful, all the way through! John Mayall's definitely getting back to his roots here – and he's also getting help from an all-star cast as well! Mayall's vocals and piano are in fine form – almost with a rough-edged Blues Breakers sort of vibe, but sometimes a bit funkier too – in ways that strongly show the evolution of the older Brit blues groove into some hipper, more soul-drenched territory. Players on the record are a range of familiar names – including Eric Clapton on guitar, Johnny Amond on sax and flute, Harvey Mandel on guitar, Sugarcane Harris on violin, and Keef Hartley on some especially nice drums. The title certainly gets it right – as the album definitely brings a bit of jazz into the mix for the great John Mayall – given that the set features strong work from funky jazz heavyweights Blue Mitchell on trumpet and Freddy Robinson on guitar! Both are musicians that we love for their late 60s records on their own, and they work mighty nicely here with Mayall in a live setting – alongside heavy saxes from Clifford Solomon, and lots of great guitar, harmonica, and piano from John Mayall himself! The style is still more blues than jazz, but definitely shows an expanding style past the more slavish roots of Mayall's early years – especially reflecting his new interaction with the American scene after the breakup of the Blues Breakers. The first side of the album features a live set from Boston – and includes "Country Road", "Mess Around", "Good Time Boogie", and "Change Your Ways" – side two is from New York shows, and features three longish tracks – "Dry Throat", "Exercise In C Major", and "Got To Be This Way". Hightide Harris is on lead guitar – with some nicely trippy licks at times – and titles include "Perfect Peace", "Gasoline Blues", "Love Song", "Little Kitten", "A Crazy Game", "The Pusher Man", and "Troubled Times". Polydor/BGO (UK), 1969. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An album that definitely lives up to its title – as the set is definitely a turning point in the career of John Mayall, and the debut of brand new lineup that helped move his music past a the straighter sound of American blues! There's still plenty of blues at the core – and great vocals and harmonica from the leader – but the lineup also features no drums at all, which gives very open space to freeplay between the acoustic guitar of Jon Mark, the bass of Steve Thompson, and the wicked work of Johnny Almond on tenor, alto, and flute! The jazzy elements that Almond brings to the music are wonderful – and really open up the sound, and showcase a whole new side of Mayall's talents too – as the group here play live at the Fillmore East, on titles that include "The Laws Must Change", "California", "I'm Gonna Fight For You JB", "Room To Move", and "Saw Mill Gulch Road". Polydor (Japan), 1978. New Copy ... $13.99
Sweet late 70s modern soul from Alton McClain & Destiny – a great little female vocal trio with a sound that ranges from lightly funky to soaringly soulful! The group kind of follow in a tradition started by Honeycone and First Choice, and improved upon by The Emotions – and like that latter group, the girls move from the easier disco tracks that you'd normally expect, into a range of soulful styles that all come off equally well with their vocal technique. Webster Lewis handled some of the sweeping string arrangements – and players include Wah Wah Watson on guitar and Lee Ritenour on keys. Titles include "Crazy Love", "Sweet Temptation", "Taking My Love For Granted", "My Empty Room", "Push & Pull", and "The Power Of Love". CD

Most likely our favorite album by John McLaughlin – and one that features him in a wonderfully spare setting – alongside John Surman on saxes, Brian Odges on bass, and Tony Oxley on drums. The playing has a free and loose quality that McLaughlin would later lose on some his more fusion-y outings, and the group runs through some excellent post bop originals and modal excursion – all done with a wide open sound and a great sense of dynamics. Titles include "Extrapolation", "It's Funny", "Argen's Bag", "Pete The Poet", "This Is For Us To Share", "Spectrum", "Binky's Beam", "Really You Know", "Two For Two", and "Peace Piece". Polydor (Japan), 2000. New Copy (pic cover)... Out Of Stock
Jazzy, lovely, and completely soulful! "Fallin" begins with a soaring drum break, riffing away as tight piano lines join in, along with Monday's scatting vocals. The cut's got a classy jazzy sound that's totally 70s – but with enough of a groove to work well on a modern dancefloor. "Restless" is a bit more straight funk – with breakbeats and Fender Rhodes on the intro, and some great vocals by Monday that remind us a bit of Marlena Shaw's classic work. "Early Dawn" is a sweet jazzy ballad, with flute and guitar, in a mellower mode that reminds us of her New Directions single. Another clear winner from one of the best soul artists around – and worth the Japanese price tag! CD

An EP release – but one that offers up a great standout moment in the career of Monday Michiru – and a record that has the power to knock away most other contemporary soul of the time! Monday's picking up a bit more of a clubby vibe than her earlier years – getting great help from Masters At Work on a remix of "Sunshine After The Rain" – which was one of our favorite tracks from the Jazz Brat album! She also serves up a uniquely rhythmic take on the Minnie Riperton classic "Lovin You" – alongside other good cuts that include "Love Flow", "Far To Go", "Where Is The Passion", and the instrumental track "Mermaid". A wonderful EP from Monday Michiru – featuring three tracks exclusive to this release – all with a sound that recalls some of the best jazzy soul of the 70s! "Something To Believe In" is an excellent jazzy cut with warm electric piano riffs to match Monday's soulful vocals. "New Beginnings" mixes acoustic guitar and some spare electronics, in almost a classic Minnie Riperton sound. And "Stop N Listen" continues the nice guitar work with some heavier bassy beats, plus a nice sing-song jazzy groove. Very nice all around – and the CD features 3 bonus instrumentals of the vocal cuts, for a total of 6 tracks in all! CD

The quality of the tracks is excellent – with tight tight songwriting, stellar jazzy grooves, and nice little touches, like Latin flute (by Dave Valentin) and vibes. This should be the record that they bring to America – but as with all of her titles, it will probably only ever be available on Japanese import. A collection of hard-to-find work by Monday Michiru – featuring mixes and covers that have been issued as singles in the past, and which fit together surprisingly well as a full LP! If you know Monday's work, you know that her singles often feature versions of tracks that are quite different than the LP versions – recrafted with the help of some of the best NuSoul producers and remixers, like Joe Claussell, Masters At Work, Shinchi Osaway, and Bluey, all of whom contribute work to this set. The package is great – and with a total of 11 tracks in all, it will save you a lot of time (and money) tracking down those expensive import 12" singles! The set's mixed together – but not strongly, so that all the songs are very much intact – and titles include "I Wanna Be Where You Are", "Lovin You (acoustic live version)", "Double Image (live at Manic One rmx)", "Chasing After The Sun (Banda Black Lero mix)", "Yellow Bird (Incognito Capoeira mix)", "Tomorrow's Sunrise (Murphy meets Titomaxx)", "Love Flow (Mango margarita mix)", "Mysteries Of Life (Ananda Project Black Tail dub)", and "Higher (higher dub)". Polydor/Light In The Attic, 1966. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $24.99
The one astounding studio album of proto punk/abrasive psych genius from the Monks – a true masterpiece – and a record that's been ripped off by myriad more famous groups in both the mainstream and underground rock landscape of the past 40 years! The group's status as discharged G.I.'s informs some of spewed vitriol, but beyond that there's little connection to any trends or scenes – the Monks are true originals in a world of imitators – and that adds a layer of excitement to an already mind blowing listen. The album's wild organ washes, primitive drums and guitar, and harsh, bizarre vocal rants prefigured everything from the Stooges, to Rocket From The Tombs, to the more predictable punk stuff that arrived 18 years later – yet it still grooves. Outrageous and incredible! "Monk Time", "Shut Up", "Boys Are Boys And Girls Are Choice", "Higgle-Dy-Piggle-Dy", "I Hate You", "We Do Wie Du", "Drunken Maria", "Blast Off!", "That's My Girl", "Cuckoo", "Love Can Tame The Wild", "He Went Down To The Sea" and more – the first 12 tracks are the original LP release – followed by later singles and a live track. Light In The Attic's reissue has better sound than we've ever heard for this material, and a great booklet of notes and photos. LP, Vinyl record album

The first solo album from Anthony Moore – best known as one of the founding members of Slapp Happy, but here emerging as a hell of a contemporary composer – with an approach that ties together the avant and underground rock worlds of the early 70s – a bit like some of the Brian Eno-produced albums on the Obscure label! "Jam Jem Jim Jom Jum" is a long piece that takes up all of side one – and features five voices each repeating different passages, and shifting in space – essentially the words "Jam", "Jem", "Jim", "Jom", "Jum", and "Ba" – which are phrased differently, in different phases, and combined with some really cool keyboards. "Mu Na Huile Ni A Shaoileas Iad" is a keyboard piece – and has a vibe that's almost like a slow-moving Terry Riley piece, but with more "crystal" sounding keyboards. "ABCB Gol'Fish" is another keyboard number, with some snapping hi-hat alongside the pulse – all ringing out in a beautiful minimalist groove! LP, Vinyl record album

Really lovely work from Anthony Moore – a contemporary composer in the early 70s, but one with strong ties to the art work world too! The set was done right before Moore's debut album with Slapp Happy – and features a string trio and a female voice – all spun out in these long, cyclical passages – at a level that's almost like a meeting of older string chamber modes and the energy of the Terry Riley generation! The album's sub-titled as "A Story For John Cage" – but has a vibe that's much more lovely and tuneful than any of his music – and which is almost a precursor to some of the work to come on the Obscure or Editions EG labels. Heavy fuzz from late 60s Brazil – a Tropicalia-era album, but one with a slightly more mainstream groove – one that mixes elements of regional music with psychedelic elements and bouncy, mod-styled backings! The approach is somewhat like the work going on over at EMI/Odeon during the time – although there's certainly a trippier side to the record as well, thanks to arrangements from Rogerio Duprat, Damiano Cozzela, and Julio Medagalia. There's a fair bit of groovers on the record – although in a somewhat offbeat mode – nestled nicely next to a few headier tunes that help balance out the whole set wonderfully. A landmark album from late 60s Brazil! This is the first – and the wildest – album by this legendary group that was one of the founding forces of the Tropicalia movement – a brilliant musical statement that easily ranks with some of the most groundbreaking late 60s American work by The Velvet Underground, Captain Beefheart, or The Stooges! The music is a wonderful blend of 60s rock and early MPB – hard-driving with plenty of guitars, but also produced with beautifully baroque touches that echo through simultaneous albums by Caetano Veloso and Gal Costa – both of whose 1969 albums are strongly resonant with this one. In fact, Caetano contributed a number of tracks to the album, including "Panis et Circenses", "Bat Macumba", "Trem Fantastma", and his great "Baby", which is done fantastically here. Fierce fuzz from this legendary Dutch combo in the late 60s – a record that's gone onto have loads of underground appreciation over the past few decades – and for good reason, too! At their core, the group are garagey, but can also trip out in a really great way – mixing straight-ahead rockers with more introspective, experimental passages – but still at a level that always keeps things focused, and never gets too overindulgent. All lyrics are in English, and are very striking – and these guys have a quality that's really all their own – hardly a copycat of any Anglo modes of the period, even though they could match or best the height of the British scene – and a stunning and surprising mode of expression that makes the album a real psych treasure! Hard grooving work from the middle years of the Return To Forever group – featuring the line up with Chick Corea on keys, synths & percussion, Stanley Clarke on bass, organ and more, Lenny White on percussion and Al DiMeola on guitars. The title may lead you to believe the set is a mellow onecentered on themes of introspection given some of the song titles, but it's actually a fairly walloping set of spacey jazz rock – with heavy drums, funky bass & synths. Titles include "Vulcan Worlds", "Where Have I Loved You Before", "The Shadow Of The Lo", "Where Have I Danced With You Before", "Beyond The Seventh Galaxy", "Earth Juice" and "Song To The Pharoah Kings". ✨✧ Siouxsie & The BansheesKiss In The Dreamhouse ... LP
Polydor, 1982. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The album's title reference to HP Lovecraft is certainly well-placed – as Siouxsie & The Banshees definitely turn up the horror side of their sound on this classic from the early 80s – a record that really has them figuring out the best side of their voice! There's still a bit of the punkish touches around the edges, but a much wider sound overall – echoes of the 4AD scene to come – but given a much more pointed presentation with Siouxsie's vocals! Titles include "Green Fingers", "Painted Bird", "Slowdive", "Cocoon", "Cascade", "She's A Carnival", and "Melt". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Siouxsie & The BansheesScream ... LP
Polydor, 1978. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Stark, simple early work from Siouxsie & The Banshees – a set recorded when the punk scene that birthed them was only a few years old – but which already has them seeking out a great new sound of their own! Some of the songs here have a short, sharp approach – but others have a slower, spookier vibe – a bit like the same shift that John Lydon took when he formed Pil after the Sex Pistols – but with an obviously different pitch! Production is relatively simple and straightforward – leaving most of the energy to come from the fantastic guitars and Siouxsie's lead – on titles that include "Jigsaw Feeling", "Pure", "Carcass", "Helter Skelter", "Mirage", "Nicotine Stain", "Metal Postcard", and "Suburban Relapse". Soft MachineSoft Machine (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Polydor (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... $8.99 14.99
The amazing debut of Soft Machine! It's hard to find a more seminal moment of jazz rock from the British scene – and there's certainly few albums from its generation that stand up as well over the years as this one! The trio of Robert Wyatt, Kevin Ayers, and Michael Ratledge carve out the future of progressive playing on this excellent set of shorter tunes that still offer up all the hard jamming of later years. Beat group morphs into prog jazz before your very eyes – on tracks like "Hope For Happiness", "Why Am I So Short", "Save Yourself", "Priscilla", "So Boot If At All", "A Certain Kind", "Lullabye Letter", and "Why Are We Sleeping?" – plus the bonus tracks "Feelin Reelin Squeelin" and "Love Makes Sweet Music". ✨✧ Keith TippettYou Are Here I Am There ... LP
Polydor (UK), 1970. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An early stunner from keyboardist Keith Tippett – served up with a punch and power that's missing from a lot of his later work! The music's a perfect blend of free-thinking jazz and some of the more progressive rock ideas of the time – not exactly jazz rock, not exactly avant jazz – but a really unique blend that flourished briefly in the UK for a handful years, under the guidance of Tippett and some of his key contemporaries! Deeper ideas are given a great sense of shape on the set – as Keith plays both acoustic and electric piano – in a cool combo that also includes Elton Dean on alto, Nick Evans on trombone, Mark Charig on cornet, and Alan Jackson on drums. The tracks have a nice little groove at the best moments – not really funky, but not that far off too – almost an echo of some of the MPS or other European styles. Titles include "This Evening Was Like Last Year", "I Wish There Was A Nowhere", "Violence", "Three Minutes From An Afternoon In July", and "Stately Dance For Miss Primm". LP, Vinyl record album
(80s Japanese pressing, including the insert. Vinyl has a mark that clicks just a bit on "Thank You For Your Smile".)
