✨✧ Roy AyersFever ... LP
Polydor, 1979. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great little album by Roy Ayers – one that features none of his hits, which means lots of fresh material – and which has great examples of both sides of Roy's talents at the time! The dancefloor side of Roy kicks in with "Love Will Bring Us Back Together", an extremely catchy groover that's very much in the mode of "Running Away", with plenty of choppy funky riffs, and a good soul base at the core. Even better, though, is the mellow spacey side of Roy – which shows up wonderfully in the cuts "Is It Too Late To Try" and "If You Love Me" – two overlooked gems that float along in a perfect blend of jazz and modern soul, with great breathy vocals and vibes, very much in the spirit of stuff on the You Send Me album. Other cuts include "I Wanna Feel It", "Leo", "Take Me Out To The Ball Game", and "Simple & Sweet" – all nice too! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Roy AyersMystic Voyage ... LP
Polydor, 1975. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An archetypal album by Roy – and one that really shows him at the turning point of his sound! Gone are the trippier jazz funk moments of earlier albums – and in their place are some tight grooves and wonderfully spacey soul. Roy hits the dancefloor with one of his first up-tempo funk numbers "Brother Green", a catchy groover with lots of clavinet, and the massive "Life Is Just A Moment", a storming 2-part number that rolls along with a pounding almost house-like groove. "Mystic Voyage" shows the sweet jazzy side of Roy – as it's a vibes-heavy instrumental with a light stepping groove, perfect for the mellow direction he'd take on other records. The album also features some great off-beat funk numbers that recall earlier albums – including the break-heavy "Spirit Of Doo Doo", plus "Funky Motion" and "The Black Five". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Roy AyersRed Black & Green ... LP
Polydor, 1973. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Seminal early funk work from Roy Ayers! The record catches him at that perfect point when he was turning from a straight jazz player into a sinister force in 70s funk – and the group on the session includes super-hip soul jazz giants like Charles Tolliver, Sonny Fortune, and Harry Whitaker, running through short hip soul tracks that were very different than the style of music they were laying out on albums of their own. Roy's on organ, piano, vibes, and vocals – and he also handles the arrangements, with extra help on strings by William S Fischer, whose usual dark touches come across very well here. The album features some great soul covers – like "Ain't No Sunshine" and "Day Dreaming" – plus the original tracks "Cocoa Butter", "Rhythms of Your Mind", and "Red Black & Green". Classic early material by Albert Ayler, recorded in New York in 1964, but originally issued only in Europe! The session features Ayler with the obscure trumpeter Norman Howard, plus Henry Grimes on bass and Sonny Murray on drums – and has all the crackle and imagination of Ayler's ESP recordings. In fact, the album stands as a key record that's as essential as Spiritual Unity or Spirits Rejoice – and has a very similar feel to both of those sets. Titles include "Spirits", "Witches & Devils", "Holy, Holy", and "Saints". LP, Vinyl record album

James BrownBlack Caesar ... LP
Polydor, 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.99
James Brown gets even better than before – working here in the setting of a blacksploitation soundtracks – which makes the album a doubly funky outing from the 70s! James is a master throughout – beating Isaac Hayes and Curtis Mayfield at their own games – as he works with super-tight work from the JBs, plus a bit of vocals from Lyn Collins – all in a massive batch of tracks that further expand his funky palette! Unlike other blacksploitation soundtracks, which usually have one or two key funky tunes, this one's almost entirely overflowing with gems – including Lyn Collins on a version of "Mama Feelgood" that's worth the price of the record alone! The whole thing's great, though – and titles include the classic "Down & Out in New York City", plus "Blind Man Can See It", "Sportin' Life", "The Boss", "Dirty Harri", and "Chase". James BrownGet On The Good Foot (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Polydor, 1972. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $22.99 24.99
A really great double-length set from James Brown – maybe slightly less iconic than some of his other classics from the early 70s, but a record that really shows the man stretching out and finding his groove! The whole thing is a great example of the new freedoms that Brown was experiencing away from King Records – and the approach not only recreates the mix of funk and soul that you'd find on Hell, but also echoes some of the People Records style to come too – in part because there's a few tracks that have the vibe of a funky 45, and also because James lets the newly-revived Hank Ballard com in and do a 5 minute recitation about how great James has been to his career. Titles include the long numbers "Funky Side Of Town" and "Please Please" – plus "Your Love Was Good For Me", "The Whole World Needs Liberation", "Nothing Beats A Try But A Fail", "My Part/Make It Funky (parts 3 & 4)", "I Got A Bag Of My Own", "Dirty Harri", "Recitation by Hank Ballard", "Ain't It A Groove", "I Know It's True", "Get On The Good Foot (parts 1 & 2)", and "Cold Sweat", in a new arrangement by Dave Matthews! JB's wildest album, with a crazy cover that shows him running away from the devil, and great gatefold inner photo with him standing amidst a bunch of declarations of "Hell". The record is a double album filled with lots of different styles from James' funky bag. Nicer bits include "My Thang", "Hell", and "A Man Has To Go Back To The Crossroads" – but the real highlight is the epic 13 minute version of "Papa Don't Take No Mess", as tight and jamming as any cut from Doin' It to Death or The Payback! Polydor/Elemental (Spain), 1972. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really fantastic album from James Brown – and an unusual one, too – as it was only ever issued overseas back in the early 70s! The album's got a title that's similar to one of James' Christmas albums, but it's a completely different record – kind of a condensation of some of his best funky moments from the start of the 70s – with a track list that's overflowing with hard funk killers! A good number of the tracks here are two-parters – showing Brown and the group stretching out in the way that the JBs would take even further in years to come – working through "Make It Funky (parts 1 & 2)", "My Part/Make It Funky (parts 3 & 4)", "I'm A Greedy Man (parts 1 & 2)", and "Hey America (parts 1 & 2)". The set also features the socking classic "Soul Power" – plus "Let It Be Me", "I Cried", and a 1967 live Apollo version of "Kansas City" – plus takes on "Let It Be Me" and "By The Time I Get To Phoenix" that later had applause added on the Super Bad album. ✨✧ James BrownHot Pants ... LP
Polydor, 1971. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
James Brown really opens up on this early 70s classic – really showing the world the amazing groove he was crafting with his band – who were let loose to jam in the studio, spinning out some really long grooves – which were then cut down to make this sweet little record! The title cut was a big single for James at the time, but it's presented here in its full 9 minute version – a monstrous jam that's equal to anything on the Payback record, or the JBs albums too – and the album also includes the long two-part take of "Escapism", and another funky gem – "Blues & Pants", which snaps along for a solid 9 minutes too! The album's filled with heavy funk, and the longer tracks allow for plenty of instrumental flourishes from Fred, Maceo, and the other JBs – and honestly, the record is more of a People Records session than a Polydor record from James. ✨✧ James BrownJam 1980s ... LP
Polydor, 1978. Very Good+ ... $7.99
At the end of the 70s, James was combatting the disco movement by forging his own brand of dancefloor music – a super-heavy fusion of straight-on funk, but with a more up-tempo twist and extended in a style to compete with some of the hit 12" singles being issued at the time. This album, although not classic material, is still a great example of James' talent for adaptation, and it features some nice long tracks – like "The Spank", "Nature", "Eyesight", and "Jam" – that still sound pretty good to us today. James BrownJames Brown – Live At Home With His Bad Self ... LP
Polydor, 1969. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $22.99 24.99
A rare lost treasure from James Brown – the full, unedited version of a live concert that was cut up and butchered for the Sex Machine album – presented here for the first time ever, with a huge amount of never-issued tunes! Sex Machine was one of those "fake" concert albums from James – some original live recordings, other studio tracks tricked out – and put together in a way that never really made much sense. This set is something completely different altogether – a James Brown concert from start to finish, complete with some wickedly sharp patter from the stage – and long tunes that really show his group hitting on all burners! The lineup of musicians include three drummers at once – Clyde Stubblefield, Jabo Stars, and Melvin Parker – alongside Fred Wesley on trombone, Maceo Parker on alto, Jimmy Nolen on guitar, and Charles Sherrell on bass. James himself plays a bit of organ at instrumental moments – and tracks include the never-released "Lowdown Popcorn", "World", "Spinning Wheel", "Try Me", "I Got The Feelin/Lickin Stick Lickin Stick", and "Give It Up Or Turnit A Loose" – next to versions of "There Was A Time", "Say It Loud", "I Don't Want Nobody To Give Me Nothing", "Mother Popcorn", and "I Can't Stand Myself". A great addendum to the famous Augusta, GA live set that was first issued as Sex Machine, then as Live At Home With His Bad Self – extra material from those recordings, brought together here in a special album of their own! The set features some great bits from in and around the sessions – including two takes on the James Brown funky remake of "Spinning Wheel", and Marva Whitney singing the Stax classic "Respect"! But the longer tracks are even better – and the set features the complete take of "Baby Here I Come" – well over ten minutes long – plus the long "A Talk With James Brown/You Got To Have A Job" – a long duet between Marva Whitney and James, which was originally trimmed down for Marva's Live & Lowdown At The Apollo album. Polydor/Sundazed, 1971. New Copy 3LP Gatefold ... $44.99 49.99
A lost treasure from James Brown & The JBs – a vintage live performance from the early 70s, and one that captures the group at the height of their powers! The format here is very similar to the excellent Revolution Of The Mind set – a totally funky, totally righteous live performance that has James and the group even more energized than in the studio – working with the kind of razor-sharp intensity that made them a legendary funk act – leaping from tune to tune with nary a break at all! Bobby Byrd acts as the MC, and joins James for a bit of vocals – and the group at this point still includes Bootsy Collins on bass, plus loads of great guitar from Catfish Collins, and Fred Wesley on trombone and Jabo Starks on drums. Dave Matthews handled some of the arrangements – and titles include "Soul Power", "Sex Machine", "Bewildered", "It's A New Day", "Ain't It Funky Now", "Brother Rapp", "Super Bad", "Give It Up Or Turnit A Loose", and "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag/I Got You/I Got The Feelin". Note – this is the first presentation of the material exactly the way that James Brown intended – as a 3LP set, without the remixing from the previous CD – pulled right from the original reels! Polydor, Early 70s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $22.99 24.99
One of the greatest albums ever from James Brown – even if it wasn't issued during his classic run of funk records in the early 70s! Yet the material here is all from that time – recorded by Polydor when James and the JBs were completely kicking ass in the studio – turning out these monstrous longform funk jams that often gave up too much material to fit on all of his albums – which makes this package an overdue dip into the vaults to rescue some of those treasures! The package first saw the light of day in 1988 – at a time when the genius of James was being rediscovered by younger hip hoppers and DJs – and the set is a love letter to all that James had to offer that scene – with gems that include the lost soul classic "She's The One", a duet with Bobby Byrd called "Since You Been Gone", a live version of "There It Is", an untitled instrumental and another instrumental one called "Funk Bomb" – plus a huge long 9 minute version of the great "People Get Up & Drive Your Funky Soul" from Slaughter's Big Ripoff, and the cuts "Say It Loud & Live", and "Baby Here I Come". Plus, this expanded version also features a 7 minute version of "I Got Ants In My Pants", the track "You've Changed", and a 12 minute alternate mix of "Bodyheat". LP, Vinyl record album

James BrownPayback ... LP
Polydor, 1973. Very Good 2LP Gatefold ... $49.99
A masterpiece of funky soul – and one of the greatest albums of the early 70s! It all comes together on this one – funk, soul, politics, and production – and the record is still one of the clearest examples of James Brown's genius that you'll ever find! Recorded during the same sessions as the JBs album Damn Right I Am Somebody – Payback has the group backing James with amazing intensity, playing on and on for very long stretches, improvising jams that perfectly match the vocals, which are often as improvised as the music. The most famous example of this style at work is "The Payback", which begins with a simple head arrangement, then has James riffing off on politics and power, letting the band come in at just the right moment, dropping solos that are still some of the best ever recorded on a funk album. The rest of the album's equally great, and even though most tracks run close to 10 minutes, and the album's a 2LP set, most of the material stays fresher than any 3 minute funk record we've ever heard. Some tracks are separated by these cool voices that rise up as seques – and titles include "Stone To The Bone", "Mind Power", "Take Some Leave Some", and "Shoot Your Shot". LP, Vinyl record album

Polydor, 1968. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
An amazing James Brown live set from the crucial year of 1968 – the show that marked the debut of "Say It Loud I'm Black & I'm Proud" – a cut that would become an anthem for much of America in the years to come! The feel here is somewhat similar to Brown's famous Boston show of the same year – a mix of blistering uptempo funk tracks, played by the band at a clip that's even faster than their studio sides, mixed with a few more stripped-down, personal cuts that feature James getting a bit more intimate with the audience. The production quality of the set is wonderful – and it leaves in all the hip spoken bits between tracks, really preserving the liveness of the concert, and packaging the whole thing with some great notes and photos too! Titles include "I Guess I'll Have To Cry Cry Cry", "Say It Loud", "If I Ruled The World", "There Was A Time", "Maybe The Last Time", "I Got The Feeling", "Cold Sweat", "Please Please Please", "Tighten Up", "Licking Stick", and lots more! Raw power and righteous energy from James Brown – a set that still has all the best funk elements of his longer-form albums of the time, but which also packs an even stronger political message too! The vibe of the record is clear from the image on the cover – the most powerful since Payback – and James is even more focused in the lyrics, which bite harder than some of his other commentary of the period – while still allowing the JBs plenty of room to serve up some heavy funk in the process! Titles include the classics "Public Enemy #1" and "King Heroin", both hard soul political tracks – and the funkier side of The Godfather is represented by the killer cuts "Talkin Loud & Sayin Nothing" and James own version of "I Need Help" (which was also recorded by Bobby Byrd). A legendary batch of funky rock tracks – noteworthy not only for production by Jimi Hendrix, but also for the group's insanely great groove! There's a bluesy undercurrent here, but sharpened much more strongly for the funk generation – which takes Cat Mother way past contemporaries like Canned Heat or The Steve Miller Band – yet also still has the gritty power of both of those groups. Jimi's production is surprisingly great – fused tightly at times, in ways that almost preface some modes that bigger acts would take rootsy sounds in the 70s, but much more revolutionary here. The set's worth it alone for the trippy instrumental jam "Track In A", and other tracks include "Can You Dance To It", "Marie", "How I Spent My Summer", "Bramble Bush", "Boston Burglar", and "Favors". A mad mix of Latin and funky rhythms – a 70s classic from the Belgian group Chakachas! The album's best known for its title hit "Jungle Fever" – an insane cut that features heavy drums, choppy guitar, and a stop/start action that's peppered with sounds of female pleasure! The track was a worldwide hit, and continues to be a funky classic today – thanks to a heavy sample history, and a life in playlists worldwide – but the rest of the album's pretty darn great too, and even weirder. Polydor, 1977. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great meeting of 70s disco talents here – as both Gregg Diamond and Joe Beck both work with Gloria Gaynor on this sweet little set – with an approach that makes for some of her nicest music of the time! Diamond's tunes have a definite Bionic Boogie feel – sharp-edged, but never too commercial, and with a nicely thoughtful approach to the rhythms overall – especially when they step along in a sweet midtempo groove! Beck's style is a bit more full, and almost in a Kudu Records mode – that style used a bit by Esther Phillips when she was picking up speed more in the 70s – a diva mode that's equally great for Gloria's magnificent vocals. Titles include "Why Should I Pay", "As Time Goes By", "Most Of All", "We Can Start All Over Again", "So Much Love", "This Side Of The Pain", and "Sweet Sweet Melody". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Alex Harvey & His Soul BandShout ... LP
Polydor/Universal (UK), 1964. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
The lost second album from the young Alex Harvey and his Soul Band – a group who really live up to their name, and really take off with even more frenzy than on their debut! There's maybe a stronger blues rock punch here – of the sort that Harvey would be known for by the end of the 60s – but the tunes are also short, and more soul-based overall – yet manage to have more than enough space for some fantastic freakouts on tenor and guitar! Harvey's already a hell of a singer at this point, and along with the amazing instrumentation of the group, even familiar numbers are really transformed. Titles include "Ten A Penny", "Canoe Song", "You Ain't No Good To Me", "Sticks & Stones", "Shout", "Long Long Gone", and "Take Out Some Insurance On Me Baby" – plus a version of "Shakin All Over" that may well blow away The Who Live At Leeds! Polydor, 1979. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Wonderful later work from Isaac Hayes – a gem from his Polydor years that has a good mix of mellow cuts and more upbeat numbers! The record has 3 long "quiet storm" tracks that take off on Ike's earlier expanded ballad style (forged on tracks like "Walk On By") – turned into late 70s late night jams with lots of stretched out production, breathy vocals, and seductive instrumentation. The best of these is "What Does It Take", which has a nice hook, and the other two are "Someone Who Will Take The Place Of You" and "A Few More Kisses To Go". Other tracks are a bit more upbeat – but Ike does a wonderful job with groovers at this point of his career – really finding a new outlet for his amazing vocals! Remaining titles include the club classic "Don't Let Go" and "Fever". LP, Vinyl record album

The set's got a gentle jazz funk groove overall – similar to Henderson's best At-Home productions for other groups, and performed with a host of great talents that include Bobby Lyle, Ronnie Laws, and Roland Bautista. Most tracks have a core funky jazz groove, but add in a bit of vocals – from singers that include Syreeta, Jim Gilstrap, Augie Johnson, and Myrna Matthews. Fantastic work by this underdiscovered Brazilian talent! Hyldon was part of the 70s Brazilian soul and funk generation that included Tim Maia, Cassiano, and Toni Tornado – but he'd also absorbed a lot of the singer/songwriter influences of Caetano Veloso, who's laidback mid 70s style will come to mind on a number of these tracks! Hyldon's got a warmly intimate voice – set here in arrangements by Roberto Bertrami that have a bit of jazz and electric sparkle, kind of in a mellow soul mode that really works great for Hyldon's style. A fantastic update of earlier soul duo modes – served up here by two of the most badass soul singers of the 70s! The album's got the smooth flow of Isaac Hayes' late 70s work – a bit of clubby rhythms at times, some soaring orchestrations at others – all in a mode that opens up into tunes that allow plenty of vocal interplay between Millie and Ike – who beautifully balance their deep soul roots and growing shift into modern soul modes. Brad Shapiro and Millie produced – giving the album some of the flavors of Jackson's late 70s work on Spring – but the Isaac Hayes presence really makes the record his own, too – as if we could imagine anything less! The final proper album by The Jam! The Gift is a far more diversely soul-steeped set of tunes than anything they'd done up to this point – and in hindsight, it feels more like a starting point for Paul Weller's career to come than a final album for The Jam! While they're working more soul influences into the formula, there's still a devotion to insistently catchy hooks that they'd sported since the beginning. A classic that really deserves a lot more respect than it gets in some circles! Includes "Happy Together", "Ghosts", the nice "Psychedelic Shack"-styled "Precious", "Just Who Is The 5 O'Clock Hero", "Running On The Spot", "Circus", "The Planner's Dream Gone Wrong", "Carnation", the great Motown-homage and superhit "Town Called Malice" and "The Gift". Polydor, 1978. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A different groove than usual from The JBs – but still pretty darn nice, and way better than just about all the other funky combos on the market! It's the late 70s, and James Brown's head is a bit addled – he thinks he's the guy who invented disco, and he starts turning his extended funky sound towards the clubs. By this point, Fred and Maceo had left him, so he's working here with a new version of the JBs, one that still includes Jimmy Nolan on guitar and Sinclair Pickney on sax – and although the new band's not the same as the old, they're a surprisingly good funk band nonetheless, and the album's still more of a funk album than you'd guess from the title. In fact, if the record didn't have JBs in the title, most folks would probably thing it was some great lost band! Lots of uptempo funk tracks, similar to those on James' albums from the time – and Martha & The Lazers sing vocals on a few tracks. A popping funky disco album cut decades before the French would be responsible for reviving the sound of classic disco. It's easy to see where the late 90s disco house revival in Paris got their inspiration on slamming drawn out club tracks like the classic "Jungle DJ" with everything you could possibly ask for making an appearance over the four to the floor beat: funky guitars, moogy interjections and wide swaths of strings. The song's divided into three sections and covers the whole of the first side, then gets a redux as a medley on the flip, after the also lengthy number "Life Is A Jungle". LP, Vinyl record album

A tripped-out batch of hard jamming tracks from ex-Mutante Rita Lee – recorded with assistance from all the members of the group at the time, but in a mode that's quite different overall! Lee is clearly the star of the show here – singing all lyrics with a much fiercer vocal approach than on her earlier solo album – pushing things hard to keep up with the jamming keyboards of Arnaldo Baptista and guitar of Sergio Dias – both of whom are working with the energy that would show up in the Mutantes styles in the years after Lee departed. One of the most compelling aspects of the record is the structure of the tunes – less conventionally rockish overall than the direction Os Mutantes were moving towards – and still with that strong dramatic flair that Lee always provided when in the group. The incredible first album by Tim Maia – Brazil's greatest soul star in the 70s, and for good reason too – given that Tim was one of the few who could match the depth of American soul and funk at the time! Yet the music here is way more than just a Brazilian version of American soul – as Tim brings in some rootsier elements from local musical styles, and even some of the trippier elements that were running through Brazilian music in the wake of Tropicalia – all to make for this heady brew of sounds that's completely unique, and completely wonderful all the way through! There's plenty of tracks here that would fit well alongside both familiar soul, and the modes of funky artists like Marcos Valle at the time – and the set also features work on guitar and backup vocals by Cassiano, who'd soon go onto become a Brazilian soul star on his own. A great step forward for the legendary Tim Maia – working here in a style that's even tighter and more sophisticated than before – yet still equally filled with funk and soul! The arrangements are a bit bigger than before, and the production a bit more professional – but that change only brings Tim into even more heavenly soul territory – with a mix of grooves and strings that lays somewhere between the best early 70s work on labels like Curtom or Motown! Tim's got a new sense of majesty on the album – and also sings in English in a few spots – at a level that makes us wonder why he was never able to crack the American soul market at the time. The one astounding studio album of proto punk/abrasive psych genius from the Monks – a true masterpiece – and a record that's been ripped off by myriad more famous groups in both the mainstream and underground rock landscape of the past 40 years! The group's status as discharged G.I.'s informs some of spewed vitriol, but beyond that there's little connection to any trends or scenes – the Monks are true originals in a world of imitators – and that adds a layer of excitement to an already mind blowing listen. The album's wild organ washes, primitive drums and guitar, and harsh, bizarre vocal rants prefigured everything from the Stooges, to Rocket From The Tombs, to the more predictable punk stuff that arrived 18 years later – yet it still grooves. Outrageous and incredible! "Monk Time", "Shut Up", "Boys Are Boys And Girls Are Choice", "Higgle-Dy-Piggle-Dy", "I Hate You", "We Do Wie Du", "Drunken Maria", "Blast Off!", "That's My Girl", "Cuckoo", "Love Can Tame The Wild", "He Went Down To The Sea" and more – the first 12 tracks are the original LP release – followed by later singles and a live track. The first solo album from Anthony Moore – best known as one of the founding members of Slapp Happy, but here emerging as a hell of a contemporary composer – with an approach that ties together the avant and underground rock worlds of the early 70s – a bit like some of the Brian Eno-produced albums on the Obscure label! "Jam Jem Jim Jom Jum" is a long piece that takes up all of side one – and features five voices each repeating different passages, and shifting in space – essentially the words "Jam", "Jem", "Jim", "Jom", "Jum", and "Ba" – which are phrased differently, in different phases, and combined with some really cool keyboards. "Mu Na Huile Ni A Shaoileas Iad" is a keyboard piece – and has a vibe that's almost like a slow-moving Terry Riley piece, but with more "crystal" sounding keyboards. This is the first – and the wildest – album by this legendary group that was one of the founding forces of the Tropicalia movement – a brilliant musical statement that easily ranks with some of the most groundbreaking late 60s American work by The Velvet Underground, Captain Beefheart, or The Stooges! The music is a wonderful blend of 60s rock and early MPB – hard-driving with plenty of guitars, but also produced with beautifully baroque touches that echo through simultaneous albums by Caetano Veloso and Gal Costa – both of whose 1969 albums are strongly resonant with this one. Polydor/Hive Mind (UK), 1984. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99
A Nigerian album issued in the 80s, but one with a spare, solid sound that's instantly timeless – thanks to long tunes that build strongly from basslines and percussion, then layer great guitar and lyrics over the top – but all with this organic flowing vibe that's totally great! The music is much rootsier than many of the contemporaries of Chief Stephen Osita Osadebe – and the guitar has this rasp that's a nice change from some of the too-clean production that was being used a lot more often in West Africa during the 80s. Side two features the extended "Nigeria Kanyi Jikota", and side one features "Osondi Owendi" and "Ndida Kanma". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Peaches & Herb2 Hot! ... LP
Polydor, 1978. Sealed ... Out Of Stock
A mega-hit from Peaches & Herb – best known for the crossover classic "Reunited", but equally great for a host of modern soul groovers! The duo first achieved fame at the end of the 60s – through a set of key pop soul tracks that had a warm and sweet finish. Here, though, the pair are stepping out with a bit more of an Ashford & Simpson vibe – more mature and groove-oriented – and getting some great help on production and arrangement from Freddie Perren. Titles include, of course, "Reunited" – plus "Shake Your Groove Thing", "We've Got Love", "Love It Up Tonight", "Easy As Pie", "Four's A Traffic Jam", and "All Your Love". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Bobby (Boris) Pickett & The Crypt-KickersMonster Mash (purple vinyl pressing) ... LP
Garpax/Polydor, Early 60s. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The classic Halloween novelty record! You might know the classic title cut – one of those tunes that never gets old, and which really blows away all the countless imitators over the years – but there's lots more here to discover, all in Bobby Pickett's cool mix of monster movie vocals and garagey rock and roll! Production is by the legendary Gary Paxton – who almost gives a Kim Fowley twist to some numbers – and in addition to "Monster Mash", titles include "Graveyard Shift", "Blood Bank Blues", "Monster Motion", "Bella's Bash" or the hair raising "Rabian The Fiendage Idol". Spoooooooookeeeey! LP, Vinyl record album

Rare SilkRed Clay/Sugar/New York Afternoon/(I Can Recall) Spain ... LP
Polydor, 1983. Near Mint- ... $1.99
A way hipper record than you'd guess from a group with a name like "Rare Silk" – and some of the best group jazz vocalese recorded in the 80s! The group is a quartet of voices – 3 female, 1 male – and they come together in a style that's far less hokey than most of the other practitioners of this mode at the time – a timeless sort of hipster approach that's really got a lot of the same sort of energy as Mark Murphy on Muse! Backing is small combo jazz on all numbers, with some really sweet keyboards on a few of the best tracks – and this EP is a promo sampler from the full New Weave album – with 4 tracks that include Freddie Hubbard's "Red Clay", Richie Cole's "New York Afternoon", Chick Corea's "Spain", and Stanley Turrentine's "Sugar". Irene ReidWorld Needs What I Need ... LP
Polydor, Early 70s. Very Good- ... $7.99
A nice one from Irene – a bit heavier on the soul tip than some of her earlier work, with strong arrangements by Horace Ott that have a slightly southern feel to them. The cut "The World Needs What I Need" is a great one – and other tracks include "Words", "A Certain Kind Of Woman", "Hey World, Let Love In", and a groovy cover of Van Morrison's "Moondance". Hard grooving work from the middle years of the Return To Forever group – featuring the line up with Chick Corea on keys, synths & percussion, Stanley Clarke on bass, organ and more, Lenny White on percussion and Al DiMeola on guitar. As you'd expect from this crew, this is some of the hardest hitting cosmic fusion that the group ever cut! Titles include "Dayride", "Jungle Waterfall", "Flight Of The Newborn", "Sofistifunk" and "Excerpt From The First Movement Of Heavy Metal". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Marlena ShawLove Is In Flight ... LP
Verve/Polydor, 1988. Sealed ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An overlooked bit of 80s soul from Marlena Shaw – and a mostly R&B-based album, despite it's appearance on Verve! Although the date is late, Marlena's still keeping the same vibe going that she used in her late 70s work for Columbia – a sophisticated mix of soul and jazz, handled here with an approach that's still got all of the class of earlier years, and which comes across a lot more warmly than you might expect for the time! Titles include "This Time", "With You", "I Must Be In Love", "Loving You", "I'll Remember You", and "Before You Know It". LP, Vinyl record album

Style CouncilOur Favourite Shop ... LP
Polydor (UK), 1985. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
A blue-eyed soul classic from the UK scene of the 80s – probably the last truly great album from The Style Council, and a great blend of 60s influences with the post-Jam sound of Paul Weller. The album's got a bit more polish than before, but still none of the too-poppy modes that would mar the group at their end – and Weller's vocals are great, as always – with a sense of warmth we never would have expected in the early days of The Jam. The songwriting's great too, and Mick Talbot manages to give the record a jazzy enough sensibility to please our dusty-tuned ears. Titles include "Homebreakers", "All Gone Away", "Come To Milton Keynes", "Internationalists", "Boy Who Cried Wolf", "A Man Of Great Promise", and "Luck". LP, Vinyl record album

Bram TchaikovskyStrange Man Changed Man ... LP
Polydor, 1979. Near Mint- ... $7.99
A brilliant debut from Bram Tchaikovsky – a power pop genius, and one who may not be that well remembered these days – but who was equally grabbed up by folks who drinking deep of late 70s sounds by artists like Elvis Costello, Marshall Crenshaw, and The Jam! There's a bit of Paul Weller in Bram's vocal style – but that might just come from the way he goes deeper than some of his contemporaries in range, all while keeping pace with the strong fast-riffing sound of his songs – which are almost always extra-catchy numbers! Titles include "Robber", "Lonely Danger", "Turn On The Light", "Sarah Smiles", "I'm The One That's Leaving", "Girl Of My Dreams", and "Bloodline". LP, Vinyl record album

Hard-rockin bluesey funky work from Genya and crew – with lots of great guitar bits ripping around, and some surprisingly strong funky undercurrents working at the bottom of the set! Think Betty Davis gone a bit more rock, and you've got a very good idea of the sound of this one – but also expect a few nice mellower cuts too.
