✨✧ Pink FairiesPolydor Years (Never Never Land/What A Bunch Of Sweeties/Kings Of Oblivion/with bonus tracks) ... CD
Polydor/Floating World (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 3 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A trio of key albums from the Pink Fairies – served up with lots of bonus tracks too! First up is Never Never Land – the fantastic debut of the Pink Fairies – easily one of the shaggiest, headiest bands on the UK scene at the start of the 70s – and a group who rose from the ashes of the equally important Deviants! The record's an unusual mishmash of modes – a set that confidently swaggers between psych, hard rock, and maybe even a bit of proto-punk – very confident in its approach, and coolly compressed in the production, but never in the slick style that would dominate British rock more strongly in the mid 70s. The Fairies aren't afraid to let their freak flag fly, but they're also clearly moving past hippiedom too – on titles that include "War Girl", "Do It", "Say You Love Me", "Tack One Side Two", "Thor", "Uncle Harry's Last Freakout", and "The Dream Is Just Beginning". What A Bunch Of Sweeties is filled with freaky fuzz from the Pink Fairies – a seminal UK group who were maybe trapped in a space between late psych and early glam – and somehow equally important to both! There's lots going on in the set – modes that are as offbeat as styles put forth by The Fugs in the late 60s, but a lot sharper overall from a musical perspective – especially in the way the group uses great guitar work and a few catchy numbers to sew the whole thing together – on titles that include "Portobello Shuffle", "Marilyn", "Pigs Of Uranus", "Walk Don't Run", "X-Ray", "I Went Up I Went Down", and "I Saw Her Standing There". Kings Of Oblivion is maybe the most fully-formed album from the legendary Pink Fairies – and a set that's got some really searing guitar from Larry Wallis – a melodic genius whose sound really holds things together, and gives the group a stronger focus than ever before! The guitar lines seem to bring out and amplify all the ideas the group were going for before – and maybe give the group a sense of darkness that they never fully reached – not hard rock cliche, but this tightness that's also completely individual – maybe like early Thin Lizzy at their best, yet in a completely different way. Titles include "I Wish I Was A Girl", "City Kids", "When's The Fun Begin", "Chromium Plating", "Street Urchin", and "Chamber Maid". Bonus tracks include "Going Down", "Walk Don't Run (first version)", "War Girl (alt mix)", "The Snake", "Do It (single mix)", "Uncle Harry's Last Freakout (alt mix)", "Well Well Well (alt mix)", "City Kids (alt)", and "Hold On (single)". ✨✧ Roy AyersCoffy – Original Soundtrack ... CD
Polydor, 1973. Used ... Out Of Stock
What can we say? This is one of the greatest soul soundtracks ever! In a market that was dominated by the big-selling Shaft and Superfly albums, Roy slipped in this masterful blend of jazzy vibes and wah wah funk that's easily one of the best-composed records of the blacksploitation genre! The album's much more unified than your average funky soundtrack – and each track moves between styles that you'd hear on any of Roy's great albums from the time. There's heavy funk on the track "Brawling Broads", cool vibes and electric piano on "Aragon", off-beat jazz on "Coffy Sauna", and great soul on cuts like "Coffy Is The Color" and "Coffy Baby". Wonderful all the way through – and another jewel in the already-big crown of the great Roy Ayers! CD

✨✧ Roy AyersFeeling Good ... CD
Vinyl Masterpiece/Polydor, 1982. Used ... Out Of Stock
Stellar sounds from the great Roy Ayers – an early 80s album for Polydor, but a set that's still got the wonderfully tight, wonderfully groovy feel of his late 70s albums for the label! Roy's really perfected his sense of balance by this time – and does a great job of balancing groovers with sweet mellow steppers – the kind of cool, compressed, jazzy numbers that we love so much! Ayers heads for the clubs one minute, the bedroom the next – and draws us in beautifully whichever direction he takes – thanks to some sublime vibes and electric piano – and great lead vocals from Roy, and other singers who include Terri Wells, Vivian Prince, John King, and Ricky Williams. Titles include "Ooh", "Let's Stay Together", "Feeling Good""Knock Knock", "Turn Me Loose", "Stairway To The Stars", and "Our Time Is Coming". CD

Killer material from the mid 60s – recorded for United Artists after Ray's initial watusi work for Tico – and in a similar style that has mixes together Ray's Charanga Moderna sound with some more boogaloo and Latin Soul numbers! The record's a key bridge between these two chapters of Ray's career – and shows that he was an early player in the change of the Latin sound of the 60s – hitting hard with a tight, young jazzy group on this excellent set! Titles include "Trompeta y Trombon", "Boogaloo Con Soul", "Do You Dig It?", "Fuego y Pa'Lante", "Happy Birthday Everybody", "El Picor", and "Bilongo". CD

✨✧ James BrownHey America ... CD
Polydor/Elemental (Spain), 1972. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really fantastic album from James Brown – and an unusual one, too – as it was only ever issued overseas back in the early 70s! The album's got a title that's similar to one of James' Christmas albums, but it's a completely different record – kind of a condensation of some of his best funky moments from the start of the 70s – with a track list that's overflowing with hard funk killers! A good number of the tracks here are two-parters – showing Brown and the group stretching out in the way that the JBs would take even further in years to come – working through "Make It Funky (parts 1 & 2)", "My Part/Make It Funky (parts 3 & 4)", "I'm A Greedy Man (parts 1 & 2)", and "Hey America (parts 1 & 2)". The set also features the socking classic "Soul Power" – plus "Let It Be Me", "I Cried", and a 1967 live Apollo version of "Kansas City" – plus takes on "Let It Be Me" and "By The Time I Get To Phoenix" that later had applause added on the Super Bad album. James BrownI Got You (I Feel Good) (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
King/Polydor (Japan), 1966. Used ... $11.99
Quite possibly THE James Brown album of the mid 60s – a solid set of hard-grooving tracks, based around the monster title hit "I Got You (I Feel Good)"! The tune's one of those numbers that has been used a gajillion times over the years in commercials and promos – but which never sounds better than here, on James' original version – one of those cuts that never gets old! The hit's also nicely offset by a number of other more obscure numbers that make the album really worth tracking down – titles that include "I Can't Help It (I Just Do Do Do)", "Good Good Lovin", "I've Got Money", "Three Hearts In A Tangle", "You've Got The Power", and "Love Don't Love Nobody" – all on the rougher side of the JB spectrum. ✨✧ James BrownJames Brown – Live At Home With His Bad Self ... CD
Polydor, 1969. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A rare lost treasure from James Brown – the full, unedited version of a live concert that was cut up and butchered for the Sex Machine album – presented here for the first time ever, with a huge amount of never-issued tunes! Sex Machine was one of those "fake" concert albums from James – some original live recordings, other studio tracks tricked out – and put together in a way that never really made much sense. This set is something completely different altogether – a James Brown concert from start to finish, complete with some wickedly sharp patter from the stage – and long tunes that really show his group hitting on all burners! The lineup of musicians include three drummers at once – Clyde Stubblefield, Jabo Stars, and Melvin Parker – alongside Fred Wesley on trombone, Maceo Parker on alto, Jimmy Nolen on guitar, and Charles Sherrell on bass. James himself plays a bit of organ at instrumental moments – and tracks include the never-released "Lowdown Popcorn", "World", "Spinning Wheel", "Try Me", "I Got The Feelin/Lickin Stick Lickin Stick", and "Give It Up Or Turnit A Loose" – next to versions of "There Was A Time", "Say It Loud", "I Don't Want Nobody To Give Me Nothing", "Mother Popcorn", and "I Can't Stand Myself". Polydor, 1962. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A landmark album that forever changed the face of live recordings – and soul music too! As has been told and retold often, King records not only had the genius idea of bringing recording equipment into the Apollo Theater to catch James in a smoking live setting – the sort of show that really set his fans on fire – but they also went out of their way to record and re-record the audience, creating a wonderful interplay on the record between James and the crowd. The result is the stuff of legend – and the record's filled with loads of nice tracks like "I'll Go Crazy", "Try Me", "I Don't Mind", "Lost Someone", "Think", "Night Train", and the massive medley featuring "Please Please Please/You've Got The Power/I Found Someone/Why Do You Do Me/I Want You So Bad/I Love You Yes I Do/Strange Things Happen". Killer 2 CD set that focuses on the funky sound of James from the 70s – and which includes great material that was never issued at the time, alternate funky takes, rare singles, and other great bits! There's a wealth of incredible material on here that makes the set essential – even if you have James' full albums from the time, because there's so many other extra bits that weren't included on those! The extra goodies include "Down & Out In New York City" (with a spoken intro), "Coldblooded" (undubbed version), "Mind Power" (alternate take), "Hot Pants Finale" (live), "Don't Tell It", "World Of Soul", "I Can't Stand It '76", "Turn On The Heat & Build Some Fire", "Problems", "I Got A Bag Of My Own", "I Got Ants In My Pants", "King Heroin", "Make It Funky (parts 1 thorugh 4)", "Escape-Ism", "Don't Tell It", "My Thang", "Funky President", and "Make It Good To Yourself" (interlude). ✨✧ James BrownPayback ... CD
Polydor, 1973. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A masterpiece of funky soul – and one of the greatest albums of the early 70s! It all comes together on this one – funk, soul, politics, and production – and the record is still one of the clearest examples of James Brown's genius that you'll ever find! Recorded during the same sessions as the JBs album Damn Right I Am Somebody – Payback has the group backing James with amazing intensity, playing on and on for very long stretches, improvising jams that perfectly match the vocals, which are often as improvised as the music. The most famous example of this style at work is "The Payback", which begins with a simple head arrangement, then has James riffing off on politics and power, letting the band come in at just the right moment, dropping solos that are still some of the best ever recorded on a funk album. The rest of the album's equally great, and even though most tracks run close to 10 minutes, and the album's a 2LP set, most of the material stays fresher than any 3 minute funk record we've ever heard. Some tracks are separated by these cool voices that rise up as seques – and titles include "Stone To The Bone", "Mind Power", "Take Some Leave Some", and "Shoot Your Shot". CD

A legendary bit of fuzzy funk from James Brown – an important collaboration with the mighty Dave Matthews, who brings a more tripped-out feel to the record than some of James' other King sessions of the time! Matthews adds in lots of psych-influenced guitar – used very different than the scratching riffs of the other JB material of the late 60s – in ways that almost make the record a second chapter to Dave's Grodeck Whipperjenny album – a gritty blend of funk, soul, and psych – all with some nice touches by the James Brown Band! All tracks are co-written by Brown and Matthews, and all are instrumental – and titles include "Can Mind", "Don't Mind", "Bob Scoward", and "Just Enough Room for Storage". CD

A wild batch of jazz rock tunes – recorded by ex-Cream bassist Jack Bruce, along with a host of like-minded luminaries that include Chris Spedding, Harry Beckett, Dick Heckstall-Smith, and John Hisemann. Unlike Bruce's first solo album – Things We Like – which was an all-jazz outing, this album features Bruce singing as well, and an overall approach that has more of a rock-based song structure – yet still many of the expansive styles embraced by the Brit jazz rock generation of the time. Titles include "Rope Ladder To The Moon", "Theme For An Imaginary Western", "Tickets To Water Falls", and "The Clearout". ChakachasJungle Fever ... CD
Polydor/Dusty Groove, 1972. Used ... $14.99
A mad mix of Latin and funky rhythms – a 70s classic from the Belgian group Chakachas! The album's best known for its title hit "Jungle Fever" – an insane cut that features heavy drums, choppy guitar, and a stop/start action that's peppered with sounds of female pleasure! The track was a worldwide hit, and continues to be a funky classic today – thanks to a heavy sample history, and a life in playlists worldwide – but the rest of the album's pretty darn great too, and even weirder. Some tracks mix easy Euro grooving with heavy conga, others have kind of an LA Chicano funk approach, and still others throw in some mad horns to complicate matters with nice jazzy riffing. Really great throughout – and maybe one of the best funky albums to ever come out on a major label! Stanley ClarkeChildren Of Forever ... CD
Polydor, 1973. Used ... $5.99
Quite possibly the hippest album that Stanley Clarke ever cut – a stretched-out soulful batch of jazz-tinged tracks – very much in the same spirit as the more righteous soul jazz underground of the time! In a way, the record would be much more at home on a label like Strata East than it would at Polydor – thanks to vocals from Andy Bey and Dee Dee Bridgewater – and a group lineup that includes Pat Martino on guitars, Art Webb on flute, Lenny White on drums, and Chick Corea on keyboards! Corea produced, and there's a bit of the free-floating style of Return To Forever here – but the overall vibe is a lot more soulful too, and reminds us a fair bit of some of the earliest work by Norman Connors or Carlos Garnett – both of whom used Bridgewater as a vocalist in similar settings. Titles include "Children Of Forever", "Butterfly Dreams", "Sea Journey", and "Unexpected Days". CD

Chick CoreaFriends ... CD
Polydor, 1978. Used ... $4.99
There's Smurfs on the cover of this one, but the album's no cartoony effort – and is instead one of the nicest Chick Corea albums of the 70s! The sound here is nicely restrained from some of Chick's more ambitious records – and is done in a way that almost recalls some of Bob James' best mellow moments on CTI – with Chick playing Fender Rhodes and acoustic piano in the lead, and working with a hip quartet that includes Joe Farrell on saxes and flute, Steve Gadd on percussion, and Eddie Gomez on bass! The round, warm tones of Gomez's bass give the album a wonderfully soulful feel – and Chick himself really response to the great company on the session, by hitting a sound that's arguably even hipper than some of his previous albums. Titles include "Waltse For Dave", "Samba Song", "Sicily", "Cappucino", "Children's Song #15", "The One Step", and "Friends". CD

Given that Chick Corea first got his start working in the New York Latin scene back in the 60s, the album's a bit of a return to his roots – even if the general theme here is Spanish, and not Afro-Cuban! The Corea Spanish Heart here is cast in some darker, more contemplative tones than more traditional Latin sides – but it borrows a wonderful array of modes from genres past – including bits of strings, percussion, and an overall more ambitious approach that sometimes shows up in Chick's piano work, or in the general construction of the tunes. The double-length set features a wide variety of Spanish-influenced numbers – played by Corea on acoustic piano and a variety of keyboards, with other players who include Don Alias, Jean Luc Ponty, Stanley Clarke, and Steve Gadd. A rare bossa session from 60s Mexico – and like others of its nature, a bit more offbeat than the usual set from Brazil! Carmen Costa's got a dark-hued vocal approach that really works well with the album's catchy grooves – kind of an alternate take on the Elenco styles of the 60s bossa scene from Rio – still with some of the same jazzy elements, but a slightly different way of delivering the overall sound. Instrumentation includes lots of nice percussion, bits of organ, flute, and vibes – and the album benefits strongly from arrangements by Luis Cardenas, Enrique Orozco, and Sergio Perez. Titles include "Oh Dios", "Berimbau", "La Mentira", "Cuernavaca En Primavera", "El Dia", "Samba Preludio", "Cadencia De Samba", and "Agua De Beber". CD

A funky killer from this legendary European group – a record that's filled with as much funk and soul as the Latin elements you might have guessed from the title! El Chicles may have been a studio project, but they were a heck of a funky one – with hard drums, tight bass, and mixed-up Latin funky groove that was always pretty right on, no matter what the material happened to be! This cold little jammer from the early 70s features the group riffing hard on funky covers of "Viva Tirado", "Ode To Billy Joe", and "I'm A Man" – and grooving even better on the original tracks "Drug Bay" and the break-heavy "At Nee-Ko". There's some excellent organ in the mix, and the whole thing's packaged in a very cheesy cover! CD

Polydor/Universal (UK), 1968. New Copy ... $8.99 11.98
The brilliant first album from Fairport Convention – working here in a sound that's much less fully-formed than in later years, but in a really great way! So many things are different here – the guitars are maybe harder and more electric, the vocals of a young Ian Matthews (as Ian MacDonald) are really wonderful, and even female singer Judy Dyble brings a very different quality to the group than the later work of Sandy Denny! These guys are less straight folk here, and more open to a lot of new ideas – great ideas, and ones that really keep things creative and interesting – and maybe looking forward more musically, than the later (and important) backward look the group would take. Titles include a brilliant remake of Emmitt Rhodes' "Time Will Show The Wiser" – plus "I Don't Know Where I Stand", "Chelsea Morning", "It's Alright Ma It's Only Witchcraft", "One Sure Thing", "M1 Breakdown", and "Jack O'Diamonds". One of the better moments of the underground scene on Polydor at the end of the 60s – a pretty cool little group led by Noel Redding! There's a few slightly soulful moments on the set that make it nicely appealing to our ears – a bit hippy dippy to be sure, but with some nice drums, good production, and even some guest flute by the legendary Chris Wood. Jimi's shadow will always blot out the excellence of the other members of The Experience, and Fat Mattress is shows had more to offer than outside the harder edged realms of rock. Titles include "Mr Moonshine", "All Night Drinker", "Petrol Pump Assistant", "How Can I Live", "Everything's Blue", and "Bright New Way". This CD edition from Esoteric includes 8 bonus tracks, including rare singles and session tracks: "Naturally", "Iridescent Butterfly", "Magic Forecst", "Little Girl In White", "Eric The Red", "and more. Stan GetzSweet Rain ... CD
Verve/Polydor, 1967. Used ... $4.99
One of Stan Getz's greatest records – no fooling! This gem often gets overlooked because it was issued in the years between Stan's bossa recordings and his later pop experiments – but trust us, it's a totally solid jazz album, with a quality level that was hardly ever matched by Getz again! The tracks are all long, sweeping, and very spiritual – and the group's a soulful batch of freer players (Chick Corea on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and Grady Tate on drums) – all of whom really open Stan up, and drive him to give out some of the best solos of his careers, with a tone that's completely sublime. All tracks are long, and the album includes an amazing version of Corea's "Litha", plus the cuts "Windows", "Con Alma", and "O Grande Amor". One of our favorite jazz albums ever! CD

Christmas magic from German reedman Max Greger – served up in a richly sentimental mode that's just right for the Holiday – yet with a few groovy touches too! Most tracks have the sparkling polish you'd guess from Greger's image on the cover – rooted in jazz, but given lots of German easy instrumental touches – especially that smooth approach that was used heavily in the economic boom of the 70s – a nice way to serve up the sentiment without ever getting too cloying. Hello have cleaned up their look a bit from previous records, but they're still hitting hard in that glam-inspired groove we love so much! Guitars are fuzzy, the vocals flanged-out too, and even though the rhythms are tight, there's a spooky sort of mid-70s pop vibe going on overall – an undercurrent of nastiness that hides beneath the group's power pop look and catchy tune hooks. Production is relatively simple too – somewhat smoother than before, but still with more than enough rough edges in the right parts. Titles include "99 Ways", "Back Seat Talking", "The Cat Is Wild", "You Shot Me Down", "Oh Caroline", "How To Survive The Night", "Walking Midnight", "Elenore", and "Hi Ho Silver Lining". Polydor/Cherry Pop (UK), 1981. New Copy ... $12.99
Long before Janet Jackson hit the spotlight, sister LaToya was the leading female star of the Jackson family – really stepping out with a great sort of sound on an early record like this! LaToya works with warm production from Ollie Jackson – an early 80s groovemeister who was doing great things to help people push past the sound of disco from a few years before – including picking up a few beats from the streets, which he uses nicely here to help Jackson advance her sound! The music has some poppy currents at times – no surprise for any member of the family – but LaToya also slinks out with her own nicely soulful take on the lyrics, making the record one of the real standouts in her catalog. Titles include "Stay The Night", "Fill You Up", "Giving You Up", "Love Song", "Summertime With You", "Love Song", and "I Don't Want You To Go". CD features bonus tracks – "Stay The Night (special maxi version)", plus 7" versions of "If You Feel The Funk", "Are You Ready", "Stay The Night", "I Don't Want You To Go", and "Love song". CD

Polydor/Elemental (France), 1974. New Copy ... $9.99
An oft-overlooked gem from the JBs – their last album for People Records, and a stone funk classic that's every bit as essential as the others! The band is still in fine fine form – with none of the fast-funk or proto-disco of some later recordings – and they're working here in some really tight song formats that almost go back to the early days of the group's first few singles. The album's filled with great playing, wonderful grooves, and Fred Wesley's keen sense of humor – which sparks the whole set with a sense of warmth and creative play that show why the JBs are still the greatest funk band ever. Includes the excellent "Little Boy Black", which begins with some tasty James Brown vocals; the oft-sampled "Rockin' Funky Watergate"; plus "Step Child", "Makin Love", and "Rice & Ribs". Not as drawn out as Doing It To Death, but more complicated than Food For Thought, and still a totally essential bit of funk! CD

One of the most fantastic albums by the JBs – a masterpiece of funky jamming, tight instrumentation, and that free yet tight style of the James Brown 70s years! The tracks are longer than on some of the earlier singles – especially the 8 minute jammer "(It's Not The Express) It's the JBs Monourail", an answer to BT Express' theme song, and a fantastic cut that's held up through so many years and so many scenes! Another great jammer is the group's version of "Thank You For Letting Me Be Myself", which runs for nearly 10 minutes – plus spacey funk tracks "Transmogrification" and "Taurus, Aires, & Leo", and the tighter jammer "Soul Funky Train", which returns to the group's funky 45 mode. One of those really unique records that trumpeter Toshinori Kondo gave us in the 80s – not really fusion, but not avant either all – yet a very unusual criss-crossing of electric and acoustic impulses, with a vibe that's all its own! Kondo's clearly drawing a bit of inspiration from the younger, artier crowd that was transforming other areas of music – and if he were in the US, we might say the whole thing had a downtown New York vibe – partly because Bill Laswell's working on the record, and adds in some tapes – alongside Kondo's work on trumpet, voice, toys, and "little instruments" – with Rodney Drummer on bass, Cecil Monroe on drums, and Yoshinori Teramae and Tiazo Sakai on guitars. Titles include "Taihen", "The Day After", "Takao Blue", "A Song For Buddha", and "Oiwake". CD also features two bonus Bill Laswell special mixes – of "Taihen" and "Shosuke San". CD

Rita LeeAtras Do Porto Tem Uma Cidade ... CD
Polydor (Brazil), 1974. New Copy ... $15.99
A wild solo project from Rita Lee – done after the breakup of Os Mutantes, and offered up almost as some sort of commentary on mainstream rock in the 70s! There's a much more straightforward approach to the music here – a sometimes-glammy sound that's echoed by the band's space-style costumes and makeup – but there's also some weirdly old-style rock instrumentation too, almost like the way that an artist like Gary Glitter could fold the 50s and 70s together in his music, and come across making something very weird and new. Here, the keyboards are almost stronger than the guitars – and Rita herself plays moog, melotron, organ, and piano – on titles that include "Tem Uma Cidade", "Menino Bonito", "Mame Natureza", and "Eclipse Do Cometa". Tim MaiaO Melhor De Tim Maia – Vou Pedir Pra Voce Voltar ... CD
Polydor/Universal (Brazil), 1970s/Early 80s. Used ... $7.99
A nice 14 track sampler of the best work by Brazilian soul singer Tim Maia from the early 1970s through the early 1980s. Unlike many other Brazilian singers Maia's style has a lot of US soul influences in it, especially as he moves more into his modern soul work of the early 80s. The sound is certainly different than the majority other Brazilian titles we stock from the same era, but it's also unique from US soul music, though you can certainly here how Maia's taken a lot of the influences from that music, and turned them into his own crazy style of Brazilian pop. Titles include the tracks "Gostava Tanto De Voce", "Voce", "A Festa Do Santo Reis", "Primavera", "Azul Da Cor Do Mar", "Reu Confesso", and "Eu Amo Voce". CD

One of the funkiest records ever from Brazilian soul legend Tim Maia – and a set that also has him singing a bit of English language lyrics too! The groove here is that classic Maia blend of Brazilian roots with American funk and soul – echoes of forro or samba in some of the rhythms, mixed with psychedelic touches, and some harder-hitting funky lines too – all in a mindblowing blend that's perfectly topped with Maia's vocals – which are every bit as large and powerful as the man on the cover himself! Tim shifts effortlessly between Portuguese lyrics and American English – the latter of which really showcases his love of American soul on the titles"I Don't Know What To Do With Myself", "Broken Heart", and "I Don't Care". The album also features a version of Marcos Valle's "Preciso Aprender A Ser So", plus the cuts "Meu Pais", "A Festa Do Santo Reis", "Nao Vou Ficar", and "Salve Nossa Senhora" – all wonderful, all the way through! The cut's got a classy jazzy sound that's totally 70s – but with enough of a groove to work well on a modern dancefloor. "Restless" is a bit more straight funk – with breakbeats and Fender Rhodes on the intro, and some great vocals by Monday that remind us a bit of Marlena Shaw's classic work. The one astounding studio album of proto punk/abrasive psych genius from the Monks – a true masterpiece if their ever was one, a record that's been ripped off by myriad more famous groups in both the mainstream and rock underground of the past 40 years! The group's status as discharged G.I.'s informs some of spewed vitriol, but beyond that there's little connection to any trends or scenes, the Monks are true originals in a world of imitators, and that adds a layer of excitement to an already mind blowing listen. The album's wild organ washes, primitive drums and guitar, and harsh, bizarre vocal rants prefigured everything from the Stooges, to Rocket From The Tombs, to the more predictable punk stuff that arrived 18 years later – yet it still grooves. Outrageous and incredible! "Monk Time", "Shut Up", "Boys Are Boys And Girls Are Choice", "Higgle-Dy-Piggle-Dy", "I Hate You", "We Do Wie Du", "Drunken Maria", "Blast Off!", "That's My Girl", "Cuckoo", "Love Can Tame The Wild", "He Went Down To The Sea" and more – the first 12 tracks from the original LP release bundled with later singles and a live track. Light In The Attic's reissue has better sound than we've ever heard for this material, and a great booklet of notes and photos. CD

✨✧ Van MorrisonIt's Too Late To Stop Now ... CD
Polydor, 1974. Used 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Van Morrison at the height of his solo powers – working here in an extended live set that opens up with all the genius for vocal expression and inflection he developed during his initial solo years at Warner Brothers! The setting is perfect to show the growing confidence Morrison has in his talents – an unbridled sense of soul that comes on even more strongly on some of these versions than on earlier takes of the tunes in the studio – especially as they mix with a few great covers here that further illustrate the wide range of inspirations that Van brings into his music. Backing is by a tight, soulful combo – and tracks include "Domino", "Wild Children", "I Believe To My Soul", "I Just Want To Make Love To You", "These Dreams Of You", "Into The Mystic", "Warm Love", "Saint Dominic's Preview", "Bring It On Home To Me", "Listen To The Lion", "Gloria", "Cyprus Avenue", "Caravan", and "Take Your Hand Out Of My Pocket". O BandoO Bando ... CD
Polydor/Discos Mariposa (Argentina), 1969. New Copy ... $4.99
Heavy fuzz from late 60s Brazil – a Tropicalia-era album, but one with a slightly more mainstream groove – one that mixes elements of regional music with psychedelic elements and bouncy, mod-styled backings! The approach is somewhat like the work going on over at EMI/Odeon during the time – although there's certainly a trippier side to the record as well, thanks to arrangements from Rogerio Duprat, Damiano Cozzela, and Julio Medagalia. There's a fair bit of groovers on the record – although in a somewhat offbeat mode – nestled nicely next to a few headier tunes that help balance out the whole set wonderfully. Titles include "Alegria Alegria", "Quem Sabe", "Que Maravilha", "Fossa Boboca", "Longe Do Tempo", "Pela Rua Da Praia", and "Vou Buscar Voce". CD

Polydor/RPM (UK), 1968. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Fierce fuzz from this legendary Dutch combo in the late 60s – a record that's gone onto have loads of underground appreciation over the past few decades – and for good reason, too! At their core, the group are garagey, but can also trip out in a really great way – mixing straight-ahead rockers with more introspective, experimental passages – but still at a level that always keeps things focused, and never gets too overindulgent. All lyrics are in English, and are very striking – and these guys have a quality that's really all their own – hardly a copycat of any Anglo modes of the period, even though they could match or best the height of the British scene – and a stunning and surprising mode of expression that makes the album a real psych treasure! Titles include "Happyville", "The Bear", "The Man On The Dune", "Doctor", "It Seems Like Nothing's Gonna Come My Way Today", and "Zsarrahh" – plus 6 bonus live tracks! CD

Pablo/Polydor (Japan), 1981. Used ... $6.99
An evocative title, and one that really sets the stage for the great sound of the record – an Oscar Peterson album that's a bit more open and flowing than usual – with some great long tracks, and a mighty soulful sound throughout! The title track is a real gem – as Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen begins the number with a long bass bit that's wonderful – which then ignites Peterson's piano into these long-rolling lines that really fit the spirit of the number! Other tunes spin out with a similar magic – still familiar Peterson modes, but kind of a deeper sense of lyricism too. Terry Clark handles drums – and titles include "Nigerian Marketplace", "Cakewalk", "Nancy With The Laughing Face", "You Look Good To Me", and "Au Privave". CD

Polydor, 1973. Used ... $3.99
Somehow it seems to us that the members of Return To Forever always cut better albums under their own names than for RTF, but these sides are still not without their merit. Like everyone else, we're rethinking our distaste for fusion, and this set finds Chick Corea, Lenny White, Stanley Clarke and Bill Connors going all out from the get go, though our favorite track, "Space Circus" provides a nice breather, with an excellent electric piano intro, and a syncopated funky-ish groove in the main part of the tune that lives up to its name. Also includes the title track, "After The Cosmic Rain", "Captain Senor Mouse", "Theme To The Mothership" and "The Game Maker". CD

The amazing debut of Soft Machine! It's hard to find a more seminal moment of jazz rock from the British scene – and there's certainly few albums from its generation that stand up as well over the years as this one! The trio of Robert Wyatt, Kevin Ayers, and Michael Ratledge carve out the future of progressive playing on this excellent set of shorter tunes that still offer up all the hard jamming of later years. Beat group morphs into prog jazz before your very eyes – on tracks like "Hope For Happiness", "Why Am I So Short", "Save Yourself", "Priscilla", "So Boot If At All", "A Certain Kind", "Lullabye Letter", and "Why Are We Sleeping?" – plus the bonus tracks "Feelin Reelin Squeelin" and "Love Makes Sweet Music". Say what you want, we love this album! When it came out, we were such big Jam fans that we could never forgive Paul Weller – but now, nearly 20 years later, we're stunned at how great some of the soul songs on the album are. Sure, you've got to throw away about half the tracks – because they're silly early 80s bad funk numbers – but the remaining half is way more soulful than you'd remember, with a sweet, sincere, compressed sound that's made all the better by jazzy touches from Mick Talbot and Steve White. Includes the classics "My Ever Changing Moods", "You're The Best Thing", "Blue Cafe", "Paris Match", and "Dropping Bombs On The White House". CD

Caetano Veloso & Gal CostaDomingo ... CD
Polydor (Brazil), 1967. New Copy ... $15.99
Beautiful early duets from Caetano Veloso and Gal Costa – much more of a bossa-styled album than any of the late 60s Tropicalia albums from the pair! The set's got a really wonderful sort of feel – bossa at some level, but also with some of the gentle darkness that Caetano and Gal would bring to Brazilian popular music more strongly in the next few years – an approach that's somewhat subtle, but often somewhat different than albums of the generation on labels like Elenco or Forma. The orchestrations are somewhat full, but never too much so – and tracks include a fair bit of early original compositions by Caetano. Titles include "Candeias", "Zabele", "Um Dia", "Avarandado", "Maria Joana", "Onde Eu Nasci Passa Um Rio", "Coracao Vagabundo", and "Quem me Dera". CD

Velvet UndergroundVelvet Underground & Nico ... CD
MGM/Polydor, Late 60s. Used ... $3.99
Delicate dissonance, bruised beauty, and hazy noise pop – all in one of the best rock albums ever made – the amazing first album from the Velvet Underground and Nico! The album's the stuff of legend – and for good reason, too – a surprising slab of vinyl that barely set the world on its ear when first issued back in the mid 60s – yet a record that's gone onto have an influence felt for decades to come – arguably one of the most important rock records of all time. There's a really sinister edge to the record, even when things are sweet – and the range of subject matter and handling here is brilliant – from the dream pop slice of heaven "Sunday Morning", the melodic bitterness of "Femme Fatale", the massive White Light-esque freakout "European Son", and the sublime "Heroin" – quite possibly the inspiration for generations of drug use to come. The whole thing's a classic – with wonderful vocals from both Nico and Lou Reed – and titles include "Venus In Furs", "Run Run Run", "Black Angel's Death Song", "I'll Be Your Mirror", and "All Tomorrow's Parties". Ronnie VonA Maquina Voadora ... CD
Polydor/Discos Mariposa (Argentina), 1970. New Copy ... $4.99
A really standout set from Brazilian rocker Ronnie Von – easily one of his greatest records ever, and a set that shows some wonderful steps forward in production and arrangements! Ronnie's still got a rock approach at his core, but he's often working here with fuller backings that include strings and large orchestrations – all blended with key psychedelic elements of the time, in ways that are a fair bit like some of the best productions from the Cadet Concept series – especially the work of Rotary Connection! Like that group, Ronnie's music here draws from the familiar, then pushes its boundaries – taking the music into unexpectedly majestic territory, but still making it groove in the end. Great credit should certainly go to arrangers Francisco De Moraes and Djama Mellin – and titles include "Enseada", "Imagem", "Seu Olhar No Meu", "Verao Nos Chama", "A Maquina Voadora", "Cidade", and "Voce De Azul". Polydor, 1970. Used ... Out Of Stock
Although Tony Williams started out as one of the most subtle drummers of the 60s, this album has him coming a long way from his "new thing" Blue Note recordings – and taking off with enough power to reach the moon! The group featured is Williams classic Lifetime lineup – with John McLaughlin and Larry Young, who was also reaching far past his Blue Note groove here – and bassist Jack Bruce, who was working his jazz chops strongly after his years in Cream. There's a raw power here that cannot be denied – a ferocity that must have been incredibly fresh at the time, and which is still, today, one of the clearest visions of a jazz rock fusion that was soon muddied too quickly in the heady waters of 70s jazz. Titles include "To Whom It May Concern", "Right On", "This Night This Song", and "Allah Be Praised". CD

Polydor/Cherry Pop (UK), 1984. New Copy 2CD ... $12.99
A pair of 80s street soul soundtracks – Breakin and Breakin 2 – reissued here with the title as Breakdance, which is how they appeared in the UK! Maybe Breakin wasn't the most accurate, most faithful portrait of life on the streets in the early 80s – but the film was a great breakout moment for hip hop culture in the mainstream, and also helped sell the new style with a heavy dose of soul! The real stars here are Ollie & Jerry – who deliver two of the album's best tracks – "Breakin There's No Stoppin Us" and "Showdown" – but the set's also got some other great 80s soul and funk tracks – including "Ain't Nobody" by Rufus & Chaka Khan, "Freakshow On The Dance Floor" by The Bar-Kays, the smooth club hit "99 1/2" by Carol Lynn Townes, "Body Work" by Hot Streak, "Street People" by Fire Fox, "Heart Of The Beat" by 3V, and "Reckless" by Chris "The Glove" Taylor – featuring vocals by a young Ice T! Breakin 2 is maybe an even better soundtrack than the first entry in the series – and not just because it gave the world the term "electric boogaloo"! The team of Ollie & Jerry seem almost fully in charge here – and in addition to creating some great tracks of their own, they also produce some other beat box gems that are equally great – nestled here alongside some well-chosen street soul groovers too! Titles include "Electric Boogaloo" and "When I C U" by Ollie & Jerry – plus "Stylin Profilin" and "Radiotron" by Firefox, "Din Daa Daa" by George Kranz, "Gotta Have The Money" by Steve Donn, "Believe In The Beat" by Carol Lynn Townes, "I Don't Want To Come Down" by Mark Scott, "See It Out" by Midway, and "Oye Mamacita" by Rags & Riches. Uno Melodic/BBE (UK), Early 80s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic lost chapter in the career of genius soul/jazz/funk maestro Roy Ayers – a set that was only ever issued in the UK, and which is a great second part to his Lots Of Love album on the Uno Melodic label! This album features a few tracks from that gem, but in longer versions – mixed with other cuts that were never issued in the US at the time – all with that return to perfection that Roy found on Uno Melodic – which was his own label, and one of the few times in the 80s when he matched the brilliance of his 70s recordings on Polydor! Like those albums, the style here is tight and right in the pocket, but also full of meaning and message too – beautiful songs that are catchy, but far from commercial – funky, but never dance music in a conventional way. The set kicks off with a 7:20 minute version of "Chicago" – one of our favorite Roy Ayers songs ever, natch – and other cuts include "Smiling With Our Eyes", "Good Good Music", "Keep On Movin", "Silver Vibrations", "DC City", and "Lots Of Love". It's like a dream come true – 13 previously unissued recordings by Roy Ayers, all from the height of his glory years on Polydor! Roy's work from this time is some of our favorite ever – a burning blend of jazz, soul, and funk – handled with impeccable charm, and a level of soul that few other artists of the time ever matched. Roy's genius was strongly documented at the time by a series of excellent Polydor albums – but there was also a heck of a lot of great material that never saw the light of day, and which is every bit as great as the classics that we've come to know and love over the years. Hearing this set is incredible – like upping our already-massive appreciation of Roy's talents, and like finding a lost corner of soul music history that nobody's ever heard before. The tunes are all amazing – a great blend of jazzy soul, mellow soul, and dancefloor groovers – and the package is only the tip of the iceberg, from what we've been told! The full album does a great job to not cross over too much with the 12" singles previously issued in this "Virgin" series – and titles include "What's The T", "I Really Love You", "Sugar", "Mystery Of Love", "Green & Gold", "Brand New Feeling", "I Did It In Seattle", "I Just Wanna Give It Up", "Together Forever", "Boogie Down", "I Am Your Mind", and a great alternate version of "Mystic Voyage"!
