Roy AyersHe's Coming (2 x 7 inch set) ... 7-inch
Polydor/Dynamite Cuts (UK), 1971. New Copy 2 x 7 inch Gatefold (pic cover, reissue)... $21.99 23.98
A special four track, double 7" version of work from He's Coming – one of the rarest and greatest Roy Ayers albums of all time – really the beginning of the funk years from Roy Ayers Ubiquity! This one's a totally solid mix of soulful jazz, jazzy soul and righteous funk – and it's straight up wonderful all the way through – with a groove that's hugely influential to say the least! Includes the amazing track "We Live In Brooklyn Baby", which has a slow sample bassline in the intro that's just incredible – plus groovy cuts like the spiritual funk classic "He's a Superstar", "Ain't Got Time", and "Fire Weaver". 7-inch, Vinyl record

Roy Ayers & Wayne HendersonStep In To Our Life/For Real ... 7-inch
Polydor/Dynamite Cuts (UK), Late 70s. New Copy (pic cover, reissue)... $15.99
Two gems from the legendary pairing of these two great 70s jazz funk giants! "Step In To Our Life" is the title cut from one of the albums that Roy Ayers and Wayne Henderson cut together – and the tune has all the edgy vibes of Roy's great Polydor records, mixed with some of the slightly tighter funk of Henderson's At Home Productions – with plenty of space for both artists to solo! "For Real" is a tune with a bassline and some great Roy Ayers-styled vocals sliding along the groove – but still plenty of jazzy touches from both of the leaders! 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ James BrownIt's Too Funky In Here/Are We Really Dancing ... 7-inch
Polydor, 1979. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Uptempo funky James from the end of the 70s – aimed at the discos, but with that funky sound of earlier days still pretty much in place! In other words, there's plenty of funky instrumentation in the cuts – a bit faster than in earlier years, but still quite nice – plus occasional flourishes of strings, to give the cuts a bit more of a disco approach. 7-inch, Vinyl record
(In a Polydor sleeve.)

James BrownKing Heroin/Theme From King Heroin ... 7-inch
Polydor, 1972. Near Mint- ... $9.99
"King Heroin" is one of James' most enduring songs of the 70s – and although it's not as funky as some of the others, it's got an incredibly soulful political message that's still extremely compelling today. The flip's got a nice version of the song's theme, too. 7-inch, Vinyl record
(In a Polydor sleeve with some pen.)

James BrownMoney Won't Change You/Try Me ... 7-inch
Polydor, Late 60s. Near Mint- ... $4.99
"Money Won't Change You"s a great little number – begins with runaway drums, then settles into a cold-vamping rap about the power of money, and what it won't do! The cut's a perfect blend of funk and message – from the pen of James and always-great Nat Brown. "Try Me" is mellower, but still has some decent work on the keys. 7-inch, Vinyl record
(Gold label "Soul Classics" pressing with printed sleeve.)

Polydor, 1972. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Nice stuff from James! "Public Enemy" is a wonderful track, with a long spoken monologue that shows a great side of James' progressive ideas. Nice message about heroin, and a good backing with a mellow feel. "I Got A Bag Of My Own" is pretty nice too – a fast funky cut with a shouted chorus that really screams! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Polydor, 1974. Near Mint- ... $6.99
Nice stuff from James! "Public Enemy" is a wonderful track, with a long spoken monologue that shows a great side of James' progressive ideas. Nice message about heroin, and a good backing with a mellow feel. Even better is "My Thang", a nice hard funky track that's James' answer to "It's My Thing". It's great how angry he gets when someone else has a big funk hit, and it always seemed like he had to write his own version! 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ James BrownReality/I Need Your Love So Bad ... 7-inch
Polydor, 1974. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
"Reality" is a pretty nice one – the title track to the album of the same name, and a political funk number that begins with sirens and city noises, then rolls into an uptempo groove that's got a bit of a "Living For The City" kind of feel. "I Need Your Love" is mellow – kind of a 70s take on the James bluesy ballad style of the 60s. 7-inch, Vinyl record
(In a Polydor sleeve.)

Polydor, 1973. Near Mint- ... $3.99
2 killers by James! Both tracks are from the soundtrack to Slaughter's Big Ripoff, and "Sexy Sexy Sexy" is a stone cold winner that always gets overlooked in surveys of James' funky singles from the time. Very nice! 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ James BrownSpank/Love Me Tender ... 7-inch
Polydor, 1978. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
"The Spank" was one of James' endless attempts to cash in on the disco market – and although it's not nearly as good a club track as the similar cut by Le Pamplemousse, it's not a bad uptempo funk number. Even better, though, is his cover of "Love Me Tender", done as a mellow ballad, with an almost-spoken style that works surprisingly well! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Polydor, 1975. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
"Superbad, Superslick" is an excellent funky number from the mid 70s, and proof that James was still going strong! The track has a mellow snapping easy funk groove, with some great bubbling keyboards, and very positive lyrics from James. "Hot" is pretty great too – with a sound that's a direct rip off of David Bowie's fame! 7-inch, Vinyl record
(In a Polydor sleeve, with light wear and some pen.)

Polydor, 1976. Near Mint- ... $1.99
2 mellow tracks from the mid 70s. The best one here is "Woman", almost a follow-up to "It's A Man's Man's Man's World" – and done with a similar rootsy sound, very different than most of James' other 70s work! 7-inch, Vinyl record

James Brown & The New JBsHave A Happy Day/Love Me Tender ... 7-inch
Polydor, 1977. Near Mint- ... $2.99
An overlooked mellow soul cut from James – and very nice! "Have A Happy Day" is a great little track written by Charle Sherrell, who we think is singing backup vocals on the cut – and the track's got a sound that's a bit smooth, but which builds in a rougher way, thanks to James' unbridled vocals on the track. Nice use of burning Hammond, too! "Love Me Tender" is the famous Elvis hit – done here by James in one of his unique cover styles! 7-inch, Vinyl record
(In a Polydor sleeve with some pen.)

Polydor, 1977. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Later stuff from the JBs and James, but still pretty good! "If You Don't Give" is a remake of an earlier track, done here with slightly more modern production. The better track, though, is "People Who Criticize", which is a good groover with a tight funky feel, very much in the "Body Heat" groove! 7-inch, Vinyl record
(In a Polydor sleeve.)

Polydor/Universal (Japan), 1980. New Copy (pic cover, reissue)... Out Of Stock
A fantastic bit of modern soul – a rare Polydor single from the start of the 80s – but one that we'd put next to some of our favorite mellow soul groovers from the decade before! "Stay With Me" has a vibe that's almost Roy Ayers – midtempo, and funky stepping – a nice edge in the groove, but not too much – with female vocals that cascade beautifully over the lyrics! "You're So Unclear" is even cooler – a slower number, but with a deeper groove – and both tracks have fantastic handling by arranger Morris Bailey! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Great early work from Mandrill! "I Refuse To Smile" is a sweet little soul track, with some pretty strong harmonies and a nice mellow sound. "Kofijahm" is even better – and is a cooking instrumental with a Latin feel – which means lots of strong percussion, and some nice funky flute! 7-inch, Vinyl record
