Culpeper's OrchardMountain Music – The Polydor Recordings 1970 to 1973 (Culpeper's Orchard/Second Sight/Going For A Song/bonus tracks) ... CD
Polydor/Esoteric (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99
The complete Polydor Recordings of Culpeper's Orchard – a Danish group who are every bit as enigmatic as their name! The set begins with their debut – a great record from overlooked Danish group at the start of the 70s – a combo who could easily step between folksy and progressive modes, and who often had a warm sense of harmony in their vocals! Culpepper's Orchard are always very much their own sort of group – but they have a great way of shifting back and forth between key styles of the time – so that the harmonies might rival CSNY, while the acoustic elements might echo the darker corners of the Island Records scene, and more electric moments might link these guys to more of their Scandinavian contemporaries. The production is really top-shelf – clearly a big push on the group by Polydor at the time – and the album's one of those rock-solid European obscurities that really deserves wider recognition. Titles include "Gideon's Trap", "Blue Day's Morning", "Mountain Music", "Teaparty For An Orchard", and "Ode To Resistance". Next is Second Sight – wonderful work from Culpeper's Orchard – a group who equally balance headier elements with softer, more acoustic modes – often using harmonized vocals in a really great way! Unlike American acts of the early 70s, who were shifting from a CSN-inspired sound to soft rock, Culpeper's Orchard really keep things sharp here – mixing in some excellent guitar work to balance the vocals, so that they've got this double-pronged approach, and a more rocking vibe overall! Titles include "Julia", "Keyboard Waltz", "Late Night Woman Blues", Mind Pollution/Weather Report", and "Satisfied Mind". The group continue their strong run on the album Going For A Song – but also add in more acoustic modes, including mandolin and dobro, mixed with some steel guitar – to unlock more rootsy elements in their sound. Titles include "Trying To Find Home", "Good Days", "Alone In Pain", "Sailor", "New Day New Day", "Before It Began", and "Roger & Out". CD set also features the single cut "Steamhouse", and three more tracks from compilations! CD

✨✧ Pink FairiesPolydor Years (Never Never Land/What A Bunch Of Sweeties/Kings Of Oblivion/with bonus tracks) ... CD
Polydor/Floating World (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 3 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A trio of key albums from the Pink Fairies – served up with lots of bonus tracks too! First up is Never Never Land – the fantastic debut of the Pink Fairies – easily one of the shaggiest, headiest bands on the UK scene at the start of the 70s – and a group who rose from the ashes of the equally important Deviants! The record's an unusual mishmash of modes – a set that confidently swaggers between psych, hard rock, and maybe even a bit of proto-punk – very confident in its approach, and coolly compressed in the production, but never in the slick style that would dominate British rock more strongly in the mid 70s. The Fairies aren't afraid to let their freak flag fly, but they're also clearly moving past hippiedom too – on titles that include "War Girl", "Do It", "Say You Love Me", "Tack One Side Two", "Thor", "Uncle Harry's Last Freakout", and "The Dream Is Just Beginning". What A Bunch Of Sweeties is filled with freaky fuzz from the Pink Fairies – a seminal UK group who were maybe trapped in a space between late psych and early glam – and somehow equally important to both! There's lots going on in the set – modes that are as offbeat as styles put forth by The Fugs in the late 60s, but a lot sharper overall from a musical perspective – especially in the way the group uses great guitar work and a few catchy numbers to sew the whole thing together – on titles that include "Portobello Shuffle", "Marilyn", "Pigs Of Uranus", "Walk Don't Run", "X-Ray", "I Went Up I Went Down", and "I Saw Her Standing There". Kings Of Oblivion is maybe the most fully-formed album from the legendary Pink Fairies – and a set that's got some really searing guitar from Larry Wallis – a melodic genius whose sound really holds things together, and gives the group a stronger focus than ever before! The guitar lines seem to bring out and amplify all the ideas the group were going for before – and maybe give the group a sense of darkness that they never fully reached – not hard rock cliche, but this tightness that's also completely individual – maybe like early Thin Lizzy at their best, yet in a completely different way. Titles include "I Wish I Was A Girl", "City Kids", "When's The Fun Begin", "Chromium Plating", "Street Urchin", and "Chamber Maid". Bonus tracks include "Going Down", "Walk Don't Run (first version)", "War Girl (alt mix)", "The Snake", "Do It (single mix)", "Uncle Harry's Last Freakout (alt mix)", "Well Well Well (alt mix)", "City Kids (alt)", and "Hold On (single)". Polydor/Mobile Fidelity, 1973. Used Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The Allman Brothers at their best – and a key 70s set that may well have the group working at their peak! All their best southern roots are firmly tied together here – not just the country-touched approach to rock that was the group's calling card, but also their ties to some of the Georgia soul scene as well – an element that really surfaces in some of the album's piano lines and rhythms, which really help underscore the depth of the tunes – and give the group a solid footing that's stronger than some of their more cliched contemporaries. These tunes hold up wonderfully over the years – and have a visionary approach that almost sparkles even more strongly here in the 21st Century than when we first started digging their sounds on radio back in the 70s. What can we say? This is one of the greatest soul soundtracks ever! In a market that was dominated by the big-selling Shaft and Superfly albums, Roy slipped in this masterful blend of jazzy vibes and wah wah funk that's easily one of the best-composed records of the blacksploitation genre! The album's much more unified than your average funky soundtrack – and each track moves between styles that you'd hear on any of Roy's great albums from the time. There's heavy funk on the track "Brawling Broads", cool vibes and electric piano on "Aragon", off-beat jazz on "Coffy Sauna", and great soul on cuts like "Coffy Is The Color" and "Coffy Baby". Wonderful all the way through – and another jewel in the already-big crown of the great Roy Ayers! LP, Vinyl record album

Polydor, 1976. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of Roy Ayers' biggest albums ever – and also one of his deepest, too! The whole thing's an incredible album of mellow jazzy soul – and it shows Roy at the crossroads, perfecting his earlier funk style with a sweet mellow R&B edge, getting a bit slicker, but still staying on the righteous path, and opening up a whole new bag in soul music. There's a wonderful electric vibe running through the record – not just from Roy's vibes, but from the Fender Rhodes and Arp work by Phillip Woo – and the amazing energy of the rest of the group too. Features the landmark title cut – "Everybody Loves The Sunshine", one of those tunes that becomes more and more of a classic each year – plus spiritual numbers like "Third Eye" , "Keep on Walking", and "The Golden Rod". Very righteous, and with a cool dope jazzy groove! LP, Vinyl record album

Stellar sounds from the great Roy Ayers – an early 80s album for Polydor, but a set that's still got the wonderfully tight, wonderfully groovy feel of his late 70s albums for the label! Roy's really perfected his sense of balance by this time – and does a great job of balancing groovers with sweet mellow steppers – the kind of cool, compressed, jazzy numbers that we love so much! Ayers heads for the clubs one minute, the bedroom the next – and draws us in beautifully whichever direction he takes – thanks to some sublime vibes and electric piano – and great lead vocals from Roy, and other singers who include Terri Wells, Vivian Prince, John King, and Ricky Williams. Titles include "Ooh", "Let's Stay Together", "Feeling Good""Knock Knock", "Turn Me Loose", "Stairway To The Stars", and "Our Time Is Coming". CD

One of Roy Ayers' best-remembered albums of the 70s – a sublime blend of mellow numbers and some of his more club-oriented grooves of the time – all wrapped together with a genius that we can only describe as Ayers-like! The album's a beautiful example of the balance that Roy was striking in his work at the time – because alongside some of the more upbeat, catchy numbers, there's other tracks that are a fair bit more laidback, and almost abstract at times – a wonderful extrapolation of that sensitive Ayers blend of jazz and soul, with key emphasis on the vibes and keyboards. Titles include the massive groover "Running Away" – which you'll recognize from a key sample history over the years – and club cuts "Cincinnati Growl", "Fruit", "Sanctified Feeling", and "Stranded In The Jungle" – plus the more laidback cuts "Gotta Find A Lover", "I Still Love You", "Lifeline", and "This Side Of Sunshine". Roy AyersLove Fantasy ... CD
Polydor/PTG (Netherlands), 1980. New Copy ... $11.99
One of our favorite Roy Ayers albums of all time – and an overlooked gem from Roy's late 70s years at Polydor! This set's a bit more laidback and less clubby than some other Ayers work of the period – which means it's got this wonderful jazzy groove throughout – a sweet mix of midtempo modern soul and the vibes-based style that Roy kept on perfecting at the time. Tracks are longer than usual, and they really open up in a way that fits the title – slinky and seductive, but never soppy or commercial at all – that really special blend of warmth and wisdom that's always made Roy Ayers so great. Titles include the sublime title track "Love Fantasy", which begins with Roy chatting up some girl in the intro, then sliding into a nice smooth jazz funk tip on the chorus – plus the great cut "Sigh", a sweet little bubbling number with a wonderfully breathy quality! Other titles include "Believe In Yourself", "Betcha Gonna", "Baby Bubba", and "Rock Your Roll". CD

A cool condensation of the legendary Mystic Voyage album from Roy Ayers – a record that really shows him at the turning point! Gone are the trippier jazz funk moments of earlier albums – and in their place are some tight grooves and wonderfully spacey soul. Roy hits the dancefloor with one of his first uptempo funk numbers "Brother Green", a catchy groover with lots of clavinet, and the massive "Life Is Just A Moment", a storming 2-part number that rolls along with a pounding almost house-like groove. This 2 x 7" single set also features the great "Black Five" – a funky number that could almost be from a 70s action soundtrack! 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Roy AyersRoy Ayers Ubiquity (with bonus track) ... CD
Polydor/Verve, 1971. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the greatest Roy Ayers albums of all time – and one of the rarest! The record is right in the same vein as Roy's groundbreaking He's Coming LP – a righteous mix of soul jazz, subtle funk, and some of the cosmic wisdom that Roy was spreading among the jazz funk underground – all wrapped up beautifully, but never in a way that's like commercial soul of the time. There's a few instrumental tracks on the album, plus some vocal ones that show that off-beat male/female style that Roy would use more famously in later tracks like "Everybody Loves The Sunshine" or his work with Ramp. Players include Harry Whitaker on electric piano, Edwin Birdsong on organ, Alphonse Mouzon on drums, Jumma Santos on congas – and titles include a version of Nat Adderley's "Hummin", done as "Hummin In The Sun", and very much in the Ramp vein. Also features instrumental cuts "The Fuzz", which has Roy's vibes toned way up, and the cool mellow "The Painted Desert", a really offbeat slow jazz number. The group also does a great job with Edwin Birdsong's "Pretty Brown Skin", picking up the song as a really anthemic groover that gives the record a nice kick! CD also includes the rare 45-only track "He Gives Us All His Love" – originally done for the movie Cold Turkey. CD

✨✧ Roy AyersTear To A Smile ... CD
Polydor/Verve, 1975. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the best early soul albums by Roy Ayers! Roy's working here with Dee Dee Bridgewater, Edwin Birdsong, William Allen, Harry Whitaker, and other hip players – a perfect crew to forge Roy's unique blend of jazz and soul. This is perhaps the first record to really have Roy stretching out in this mode – moving more fully away from funky jazz, into a ream of vocal tracks that would make him one of the most unique artists of the 70s. This mid 70s period of Roy's career was remarkably fertile, creatively as well as for sheer productivity – and Tears To A Smile is one of them that shows some the most artistic growth, and also a deeper sense of soul! Features righteous cuts like "2000 Black", "Ebony Blaze", "Time & Space", and "A Tear To A Smile" – plus the mellow "Magic Lady", and a great remake of Earth Wind & Fire's "That's The Way Of The World". Polydor, 1976. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of Roy Ayers' greatest albums of the 70s – a set that tightens up the groove from previous Polydor productions, yet still keeps all the soul intact! The record picks up the style begun with the Mystic Voyage album, and pushes it to some slightly tighter territory – a more focused Roy Ayers sound that's totally great, and which makes the album sparkle wonderfully throughout! All aspects of Roy's talents are perfectly balanced here – his warm vocals and jazzy vibes, his uptempo grooves and mellower rhythms – played to perfection by a hip lineup of players that includes Philip Woo on electric piano, Justo Almario on tenor sax, and Steve Cobb on drums. Edwin Birdsong guests a bit on the record – bringing in a nice edge to a few tunes – the album's got a really unique dark undercurrent, even in smoother moments – that subtle Roy Ayers' approach that's always made him one of our all-time favorite artists. Titles include the wonderful jazz-tinged "Searching", a great midtempo stepper that we really love; the funky break track "The Memory", a righteous number that feels like work from earlier records; the clubby classic "One Sweet Love to Remember"; and the sweet instrumental "Vibrations", which has a mellow kickback feel! Other tunes include "Higher", "Domelo (Give It To Me)", "Baby I Need Your Love", and "Better Days". CD

A masterpiece – and don't pass it up! Sure, the date's a bit later than some of Roy's classic work, but the record's got a sound like no other – with a slow mellow jazzy style that shows Roy working at the height of his powers! There's some wonderful spacey production on the record – bringing out elements like the vibes, electric piano, and soulful vocals – and turning them into a seductive blend that trails out over the course of the record, hitting a smooth mellow mode that we love every bit as much as Roy's harder and funkier work. The title cut is an amazing extended remake of "You Send Me", which sounds nothing like the original – and other good cuts include the stepping "And Don't You Say No", and the great cuts "Rhythm" and "Everytime I See You", which have these excellent offbeat rhythm patterns. A real sleeper – but one that you'll go back to again and again because of it's sophisticated jazzy vibe! LP, Vinyl record album

Diamond manages to make things groove, but never loses sight of the soulful styles that make the record so great – and works here with key contributions from a young Luther Vandross, who gives the album some of the same strong vocal arrangements he brought to his own first two albums on Atlantic! A really great double-length set from James Brown – maybe slightly less iconic than some of his other classics from the early 70s, but a record that really shows the man stretching out and finding his groove! The whole thing is a great example of the new freedoms that Brown was experiencing away from King Records – and the approach not only recreates the mix of funk and soul that you'd find on Hell, but also echoes some of the People Records style to come too – in part because there's a few tracks that have the vibe of a funky 45, and also because James lets the newly-revived Hank Ballard come in and do a 5 minute recitation about how great James has been to his career. Titles include the long numbers "Funky Side Of Town" and "Please Please" – plus "Your Love Was Good For Me", "The Whole World Needs Liberation", "Nothing Beats A Try But A Fail", "My Part/Make It Funky (parts 3 & 4)", "I Got A Bag Of My Own", "Dirty Harri", "Recitation by Hank Ballard", "Ain't It A Groove", "I Know It's True", "Get On The Good Foot (parts 1 & 2)", and "Cold Sweat", in a new arrangement by Dave Matthews! ✨✧ James BrownHot Pants ... LP
Polydor, 1971. Very Good ... $19.99
James Brown really opens up on this early 70s classic – really showing the world the amazing groove he was crafting with his band – who were let loose to jam in the studio, spinning out some really long grooves – which were then cut down to make this sweet little record! The title cut was a big single for James at the time, but it's presented here in its full 9 minute version – a monstrous jam that's equal to anything on the Payback record, or the JBs albums too – and the album also includes the long two-part take of "Escapism", and another funky gem – "Blues & Pants", which snaps along for a solid 9 minutes too! The album's filled with heavy funk, and the longer tracks allow for plenty of instrumental flourishes from Fred, Maceo, and the other JBs – and honestly, the record is more of a People Records session than a Polydor record from James. A rare lost treasure from James Brown – the full, unedited version of a live concert that was cut up and butchered for the Sex Machine album – presented here for the first time ever, with a huge amount of never-issued tunes! Sex Machine was one of those "fake" concert albums from James – some original live recordings, other studio tracks tricked out – and put together in a way that never really made much sense. This set is something completely different altogether – a James Brown concert from start to finish, complete with some wickedly sharp patter from the stage – and long tunes that really show his group hitting on all burners! The lineup of musicians include three drummers at once – Clyde Stubblefield, Jabo Stars, and Melvin Parker – alongside Fred Wesley on trombone, Maceo Parker on alto, Jimmy Nolen on guitar, and Charles Sherrell on bass. James himself plays a bit of organ at instrumental moments – and tracks include the never-released "Lowdown Popcorn", "World", "Spinning Wheel", "Try Me", "I Got The Feelin/Lickin Stick Lickin Stick", and "Give It Up Or Turnit A Loose" – next to versions of "There Was A Time", "Say It Loud", "I Don't Want Nobody To Give Me Nothing", "Mother Popcorn", and "I Can't Stand Myself". A lost treasure from James Brown & The JBs – a vintage live performance from the early 70s, and one that captures the group at the height of their powers! The format here is very similar to the excellent Revolution Of The Mind set – a totally funky, totally righteous live performance that has James and the group even more energized than in the studio – working with the kind of razor-sharp intensity that made them a legendary funk act – leaping from tune to tune with nary a break at all! Bobby Byrd acts as the MC, and joins James for a bit of vocals – and the group at this point still includes Bootsy Collins on bass, plus loads of great guitar from Catfish Collins, and Fred Wesley on trombone and Jabo Starks on drums. Dave Matthews handled some of the arrangements – and titles include "Soul Power", "Sex Machine", "Bewildered", "It's A New Day", "Ain't It Funky Now", "Brother Rapp", "Super Bad", "Give It Up Or Turnit A Loose", and "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag/I Got You/I Got The Feelin". Note – this is the first presentation of the material exactly the way that James Brown intended – as a 3LP set, without the remixing from the previous CD – pulled right from the original reels! Polydor, Early 70s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the greatest albums ever from James Brown – even if it wasn't issued during his classic run of funk records in the early 70s! Yet the material here is all from that time – recorded by Polydor when James and the JBs were completely kicking ass in the studio – turning out these monstrous longform funk jams that often gave up too much material to fit on all of his albums – which makes this package an overdue dip into the vaults to rescue some of those treasures! The package first saw the light of day in 1988 – at a time when the genius of James was being rediscovered by younger hip hoppers and DJs – and the set is a love letter to all that James had to offer that scene – with gems that include the lost soul classic "She's The One", a duet with Bobby Byrd called "Since You Been Gone", a live version of "There It Is", an untitled instrumental and another instrumental one called "Funk Bomb" – plus a huge long 9 minute version of the great "People Get Up & Drive Your Funky Soul" from Slaughter's Big Ripoff, and the cuts "Say It Loud & Live", and "Baby Here I Come". Plus, this expanded version also features a 7 minute version of "I Got Ants In My Pants", the track "You've Changed", and a 12 minute alternate mix of "Bodyheat". LP, Vinyl record album

A fantastic late 70s album from James Brown – maybe one of his last true classics of the decade! The vibe's shifted a bit since the Payback era, but the sound is still totally great – as James is working closely here with Charles Sherrell (aka Sweet Charles) – in a style that's slightly different than his work with Fred Wesley or Maceo, but no less funky overall! There's still loads of sharp angles and gritty elements in the grooves – and titles include the tasty cut "If You Don't Give a Doggone About It", done with the JBs, one that has a nice choppy "Doin It To Death" sort of groove – plus "People Who Criticize", "Give Me Some Skin", "Have A Happy Day", "Bessie", "Summertime", "People Wake Up & Live", and "Take Me Higher & Groove Me". A masterpiece of funky soul – and one of the greatest albums of the early 70s! It all comes together on this one – funk, soul, politics, and production – and the record is still one of the clearest examples of James Brown's genius that you'll ever find! Recorded during the same sessions as the JBs album Damn Right I Am Somebody – Payback has the group backing James with amazing intensity, playing on and on for very long stretches, improvising jams that perfectly match the vocals, which are often as improvised as the music. The most famous example of this style at work is "The Payback", which begins with a simple head arrangement, then has James riffing off on politics and power, letting the band come in at just the right moment, dropping solos that are still some of the best ever recorded on a funk album. The rest of the album's equally great, and even though most tracks run close to 10 minutes, and the album's a 2LP set, most of the material stays fresher than any 3 minute funk record we've ever heard. Some tracks are separated by these cool voices that rise up as seques – and titles include "Stone To The Bone", "Mind Power", "Take Some Leave Some", and "Shoot Your Shot". LP, Vinyl record album

An amazing double-live album that's to concert records what James Brown's Payback was to the sound of studio funk! Like that classic, this is a double-length 2LP set that really has James and the JBs stretching out and doing their thing – working here in a setting that's supposed to be the "part 3" to the famous Live At The Apollo albums – but with a vibe that really shows the different spirit of the Godfather in the 70s! An amazing James Brown live set from the crucial year of 1968 – the show that marked the debut of "Say It Loud I'm Black & I'm Proud" – a cut that would become an anthem for much of America in the years to come! The feel here is somewhat similar to Brown's famous Boston show of the same year – a mix of blistering uptempo funk tracks, played by the band at a clip that's even faster than their studio sides, mixed with a few more stripped-down, personal cuts that feature James getting a bit more intimate with the audience. The production quality of the set is wonderful – and it leaves in all the hip spoken bits between tracks, really preserving the liveness of the concert, and packaging the whole thing with some great notes and photos too! A plenty funky record, despite a cheesy cover – which shows James Brown as a disco-era player – kicking back on a couch with an unbuttoned shirt, while two topless girls dance in front of him – showing him their "cakes"! The groove's definitely different than the Payback years, but it's still composed of the same core elements – sharp instrumentation, played live and in a very lively way – sped up a bit for the dancefloor, but maybe even more breathtaking because of the speed! At the time, Brown spent plenty of time trying to claim the mantle of disco godfather – but he's still way more than that here – a fierce funk maestro who's already got his instrumental tip down to razor-sharp perfection, which makes the shouted and called vocals just a bonus icing on the cake! An oft-forgotten funky classic from James! The track's a monster – with this wah-wah beat that's flanged all over the place, yet is still as tight as a pair of pants with a 26 inch waist! The groove is prime JBs early 70s – and James is shoutin and callin the groove over the top! 7-inch, Vinyl record

2 mellow tracks from the mid 70s. The best one here is "Woman", almost a follow-up to "It's A Man's Man's Man's World" – and done with a similar rootsy sound, very different than most of James' other 70s work! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Polydor/Get On Down, 1972. New Copy 2LP ... $24.99 30.98
A never-issued James Brown album from 1972 – a killer live performance from The Apollo Theater – and one that features a fair bit of help from other members of his People Records crew! James performs a bit on the record – but the set also features some great instrumental sides from the JBs, who get almost half the set – plus a few songs each by Bobby Byrd and Lyn Collins – two of the greatest singers to ever work with The Godfather! There's also some great introductions by Danny Day – in that usual hip style we love from James' concert recordings – and titles include "Wine Spot", "From The Back Side", "Hot Pants Road", "Honky Tonk", "Pass The Peas", and "Gimme Some More" by The JBs – plus "I Know You Got Soul", "If Loving You Is Wrong I Don't Want To Be Right", and "Keep On Doin What You're Doin" by Bobby Byrd; and "Do Your Thing", "Think", and "I'll Take You There" by Lyn Collins. Marion BrownPorto Novo (red vinyl pressing) (2020 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Polydor/ORG, 1967. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99
Genius early work from reedman Marion Brown – an album that was originally only issued overseas, where it was recorded – as part of that legacy that's always had Brown getting a lot more attention in Europe than back at home! Yet the record's a monster that stands equally with Marion's seminal sides for Impulse and ESP – and is maybe even bolder than both of them, as Brown blows alto in a loose trio – with Maarten Van Altena on bass and Han Bennink on drums – in a mode that definitely puts the "free" in free jazz – recorded before the start of both FMP and BYG! Yet there's also that sensitive, soulful quality that makes Brown so great – that element in the music that's always had recordings like these as key pointers forwards to the loft jazz years on the NYC scene – a brilliant blend of freedom and inner spirit – on titles that include "Sound Structure", "QBIC", "Porto Novo", and "Similar Limits". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Bobby ByrdI Need Help ... LP
Polydor, Early 70s. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The stunning only album ever from the great Bobby Byrd – know to many as a longtime associate of James Brown, and finally getting his chance to shine here in the spotlight! Bobby was in the game before James, and always continued to change his groove in all the right ways with The Godfather – so this late 60s recording has Byrd coming across just like the best last James Brown material on King – with production from James, and backing from the same group too! There's loads of classics here that went onto become huge funky 45s over the years – and big sample cuts too – and titles include "I Need Help (I Can't Do It Alone) (parts 1 & 2)", "Funky Soul", "My Concerto", "You Got To Have A Job (If You Don't Work, You Can't Eat)", and "Hang Ups We Don't Need (The Hungry We've Got To Feed)". Polydor/Light In The Attic, 1972. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A record filled with cover images that run from Richard Nixon to Elvis Presley, to Mick Jagger, Caetano Veloso, Chairman Mao, Jorge Ben, Jimi Hendrix, and Andy Warhol – and a set whose sound definitely seems to live up to such heady company from the 20th century! Erasmo Carlos is at his inventive best here – very playfully creative, yet in a way that refines his style from his trippier years – almost a reinvention of the singer's approach for a new generation of MPB – in a manner that some of the Tropicalia artists were doing at the time. The songwriting and production are great – and if the album were in English, it may well have been a global hit (although it did pretty well at home back in Brazil!) – and titles include "Mane Joao", "Largo Da Segunda Feira", "Sabado Morto", "E Proibido Fumar", "Preciso Encontrar Um Amigo", and "Mundo Cao". A funky killer from this hip Brazilian drummer – with his always great percussive vibe touched nicely by Cali soul and funk influences! There's a really great mix of modes on this one. The percussion is prominent, of course, often with a funk steeped bass groove, killer horns, nice guitar grooves and some soaring strings with the moment calls for it. A couple of standouts are the funkiest numbers – a great take on "Soulful Strut", which closes the set, plus a breezy cover of "California Soul" – but the whole thing is great! Other titles include "Wilsamba", "Sambaloo", "Se Voce Pensa", "Zazueira", and a fantastic instrumental version of Caetano Veloso's "Irene"! LP, Vinyl record album

Executive SuiteExecutive Suite 1 ... LP
Polydor, 1974. New Copy (reissue)... $11.99
A gem of a full-length set from Executive Suite – a Philly quartet who are probably best known for their singles in the 70s, but who really find a great way to open up here in the course of an expanded album! Some of the tracks are nice and long – done in a two-part style that really brings up some of the excellent Sigma Sound backing the group get for their vocals arranged with a nice early approach to Philly club by Patrick Adams, Bobby Martin, and the team of Norman Harris, Ronnie Baker, and Earl Young! The sound rivals some of the more famous Philly productions on Atlantic Records by bigger groups of the mid 70s – and titles include "You Got It (parts 1 & 2)", "When The Fuel Runs Out (parts 1 & 2)", "You Believed In Me (parts 1 & 2)", "I'm A Winner Now", and "Your Love Is Paradise". Fantastic spacey sounds from Franco Falsini – a record that was originally created as the soundtrack for the film Cold Nose (Naso Freddo) – but which also really works as a link between the early 70s Italian prog scenes, and some of the more longform electric modes of the German scene! The set features three long tracks, all instrumental – building beautifully from guitar lines, keyboards, and other electric elements – pulsating at a midtempo pace, and with maybe a bit more heft than a Tangerine Dream record, thanks to occasional solo breakouts that never seem to disturb the energy of the core pulsations too much! A gem of a set – electric and spacey, but never laidback or lazy. LP, Vinyl record album

Polydor/Wah Wah (Spain), 1972. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $32.99
The second and final album from New Zealand's Farmyard – a record that continues some of the jazzy spirit of their debut, but which also goes into territory that's a bit more rough and raw too! It's almost as if the group were getting their wind a bit more – and finding a way to make a statement that was bolder than before, but still had a quality to set them apart from the rest – plenty of flute and tenor from Andrew Stevens, but mixed with more electric guitar and bass – on a set of tunes that have hard rock appeal, but also plenty of sharp proggy changes! Titles include "Me The Dog Ma & Dear Ol Dad", "All In Your Mind", "Looking For A Place", "Feeling Pretty Good", "Fantasia/New Road", and "Too Much Wrong". LP, Vinyl record album

An obscure jazzy group from the New Zealand scene of the early 70s – definitely a rock act at the core, but one who make wonderful use of flute and tenor from Andrew Stevens, who really helps give the record a special sound of its own! There's also some vibes, Indian percussion, and other unique instrumentation in the set – mixed with guitars that are as acoustic as they are electric, giving the whole thing a quality that's almost in the folk funk side of the universe – dreamy one minute, groovy the next, and the kind of record that's well worth seeking out as a unique rarity! Titles include "Da Woiks", "I Sit Alone", "Which Way Confusion", "Through My Window", "Learning Bout Living", and "Those Days Are Gone". LP, Vinyl record album

A really hard-jamming band from the Japanese scene at the start of the 70s – the kind of quartet who take simple instruments but find a way of making music that's completely their own! The record's instrumental, and definitely has some ties to European prog – but there's also a sound that's much rougher around the edges – especially on the guitar and organ, which would both be equally at home on a blues rock record, but never have this intensity or complexity! The group show their hard rock chops at a few points too – and titles include "The Hole In A Sausage", "Dedicated To Bach", "Clock", "The Conflict Of The Hippo & The Pig", "Waltz For MPB", and "Naked Mountain". THE lasting classic from Gloria Gaynor – the record that contains her tremendous hit "I Will Survive", and a great batch of disco grooves overall! The album's got a simple, honest sort of approach, despite its release in an era of overblown dancefloor sets – and arranger Freddie Perren does a great job of balancing all the elements here – hitting strong on the rhythms, but mixing in bits of strings from Gene Page and others – all in a sound that's round, warm, and surprisingly soulful, despite the big crossover fame of the hit on the record. In addition to a nice long take of "I Will Survive", other tracks include "Anybody Wanna Party?", "Please, Be There", "I Said Yes", and "You Can Exit". LP, Vinyl record album
