✨✧ Dave GrusinOne Of A Kind (Polydor) ... LP
Polydor, 1977. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Dave Grusin made a few sleepy albums in his day, but this isn't one of them – and instead, it's a sweet funky fusion outing that really sums up some of the best Dave Grusin modes of the 70s! This excellent LP from 1977 really captures the best of the Grusin soundtrack style – heard in the 70s on shows like Barretta, or in films like Three Days of the Condor – mellow fusion with a tightly arranged style – lots of nicely isolated instrumentation, and the kind of spare and spacey grooves that you'd expect from a hip CTI session! Musicians include Grover Washington on saxes, Dave Valentin on flute, Ron Carter on bass, and Steve Gadd himself – plus Grusin on a lot of sweet keyboards – and titles include great cut "Modaji", plus "Heart Is A Lonely Hunter", "Catavento", and "Montage". Isaac HayesBest Of The Polydor Years ... CD
Polydor, Late 70s/Early 80s. Used ... $2.99
Great later work by Isaac Hayes – working here in a post-Stax, post-ABC mode that has him forging a smooth soul sound that's really great! The Polydor years saw Ike extending the baroque style that he started on earlier work – taking it into a modern soul vein with strings, keyboards, and smooth production that had a lot of Philly soul touches. This 12 track set features some of Ike's best from the years – including winners like "Moonlight Lovin/Menage A Trois", "Out Of The Ghetto", "Lifetime Thing", "It's Heaven To Me", "Zeke The Freak", "Wherever You Are", "You Can't Hold Your Woman", "A Few More Kisses To Go", and "What Does It Take". Pink FairiesPolydor Years (Never Never Land/What A Bunch Of Sweeties/Kings Of Oblivion/with bonus tracks) ... CD
Polydor/Floating World (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 3 CDs ... $18.99
A trio of key albums from the Pink Fairies – served up with lots of bonus tracks too! First up is Never Never Land – the fantastic debut of the Pink Fairies – easily one of the shaggiest, headiest bands on the UK scene at the start of the 70s – and a group who rose from the ashes of the equally important Deviants! The record's an unusual mishmash of modes – a set that confidently swaggers between psych, hard rock, and maybe even a bit of proto-punk – very confident in its approach, and coolly compressed in the production, but never in the slick style that would dominate British rock more strongly in the mid 70s. The Fairies aren't afraid to let their freak flag fly, but they're also clearly moving past hippiedom too – on titles that include "War Girl", "Do It", "Say You Love Me", "Tack One Side Two", "Thor", "Uncle Harry's Last Freakout", and "The Dream Is Just Beginning". What A Bunch Of Sweeties is filled with freaky fuzz from the Pink Fairies – a seminal UK group who were maybe trapped in a space between late psych and early glam – and somehow equally important to both! There's lots going on in the set – modes that are as offbeat as styles put forth by The Fugs in the late 60s, but a lot sharper overall from a musical perspective – especially in the way the group uses great guitar work and a few catchy numbers to sew the whole thing together – on titles that include "Portobello Shuffle", "Marilyn", "Pigs Of Uranus", "Walk Don't Run", "X-Ray", "I Went Up I Went Down", and "I Saw Her Standing There". Kings Of Oblivion is maybe the most fully-formed album from the legendary Pink Fairies – and a set that's got some really searing guitar from Larry Wallis – a melodic genius whose sound really holds things together, and gives the group a stronger focus than ever before! The guitar lines seem to bring out and amplify all the ideas the group were going for before – and maybe give the group a sense of darkness that they never fully reached – not hard rock cliche, but this tightness that's also completely individual – maybe like early Thin Lizzy at their best, yet in a completely different way. Titles include "I Wish I Was A Girl", "City Kids", "When's The Fun Begin", "Chromium Plating", "Street Urchin", and "Chamber Maid". Bonus tracks include "Going Down", "Walk Don't Run (first version)", "War Girl (alt mix)", "The Snake", "Do It (single mix)", "Uncle Harry's Last Freakout (alt mix)", "Well Well Well (alt mix)", "City Kids (alt)", and "Hold On (single)". A totally cool little record – a double 7" single that brings together 4 of the best tracks from the Coffy soundtrack of the 70s – that fantastic blacksplitation film that was Roy Ayers' entry into the genre! All the tracks are great – from the catchy funky soul of the theme, "Coffy Is The Color" – to the tight instrumentation of "Aragon", "Brawling Broads", and "Exotic Dance" – some of the funkiest numbers on the record. 7-inch, Vinyl record

Polydor/Universal, 1973. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
What can we say? This is one of the greatest soul soundtracks ever! In a market that was dominated by the big-selling Shaft and Superfly albums, Roy slipped in this masterful blend of jazzy vibes and wah wah funk that's easily one of the best-composed records of the blacksploitation genre! The album's much more unified than your average funky soundtrack – and each track moves between styles that you'd hear on any of Roy's great albums from the time. There's heavy funk on the track "Brawling Broads", cool vibes and electric piano on "Aragon", off-beat jazz on "Coffy Sauna", and great soul on cuts like "Coffy Is The Color" and "Coffy Baby". Wonderful all the way through – and another jewel in the already-big crown of the great Roy Ayers! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Roy AyersEverybody Loves The Sunshine ... CD
Polydor, 1976. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of Roy Ayers' biggest albums ever – and also one of his deepest, too! The whole thing's an incredible album of mellow jazzy soul – and it shows Roy at the crossroads, perfecting his earlier funk style with a sweet mellow R&B edge, getting a bit slicker, but still staying on the righteous path, and opening up a whole new bag in soul music. There's a wonderful electric vibe running through the record – not just from Roy's vibes, but from the Fender Rhodes and Arp work by Phillip Woo – and the amazing energy of the rest of the group too. Features the landmark title cut – "Everybody Loves The Sunshine", one of those tunes that becomes more and more of a classic each year – plus spiritual numbers like "Third Eye" , "Keep on Walking", and "The Golden Rod". Very righteous, and with a cool dope jazzy groove! CD

Vinyl Masterpiece/Polydor, 1982. Used ... $11.99
Stellar sounds from the great Roy Ayers – an early 80s album for Polydor, but a set that's still got the wonderfully tight, wonderfully groovy feel of his late 70s albums for the label! Roy's really perfected his sense of balance by this time – and does a great job of balancing groovers with sweet mellow steppers – the kind of cool, compressed, jazzy numbers that we love so much! Ayers heads for the clubs one minute, the bedroom the next – and draws us in beautifully whichever direction he takes – thanks to some sublime vibes and electric piano – and great lead vocals from Roy, and other singers who include Terri Wells, Vivian Prince, John King, and Ricky Williams. Polydor, 1979. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great little album by Roy Ayers – one that features none of his hits, which means lots of fresh material – and which has great examples of both sides of Roy's talents at the time! The dancefloor side of Roy kicks in with "Love Will Bring Us Back Together", an extremely catchy groover that's very much in the mode of "Running Away", with plenty of choppy funky riffs, and a good soul base at the core. Even better, though, is the mellow spacey side of Roy – which shows up wonderfully in the cuts "Is It Too Late To Try" and "If You Love Me" – two overlooked gems that float along in a perfect blend of jazz and modern soul, with great breathy vocals and vibes, very much in the spirit of stuff on the You Send Me album. Other cuts include "I Wanna Feel It", "Leo", "Take Me Out To The Ball Game", and "Simple & Sweet" – all nice too! LP, Vinyl record album

Polydor, 1978. Near Mint- ... $8.99
Pure magic from the height of Roy Ayers' classic 70s run on Polydor – a record that's filled with warm, jazzy grooves – all served up in that unique style that Roy was forging at the time! The album perfectly balances dancefloor tracks with mellower numbers – stepping out one minute with a funky groove on the bottom, then sliding into some slinkier laidback styles that are equally great. William Allen handles the arrangements with Roy, and does the strings himself – and also plays some monstrous bass on most numbers, which really brings up the rhythms from the bottom! Titles include the killer groovers "Sweet Tears", "When Is Real Real", "Let's Do It", and "Freaky Deaky" – and the warm mellow cuts "You Came Into My Life", "Kiss", and "Melody Maker". An archetypal album by Roy – and one that really shows him at the turning point! Gone are the trippier jazz funk moments of earlier albums – and in their place are some tight grooves and wonderfully spacey soul. Roy hits the dancefloor with one of his first uptempo funk numbers "Brother Green", a catchy groover with lots of clavinet, and the massive "Life Is Just A Moment", a storming 2-part number that rolls along with a pounding almost house-like groove. "Mystic Voyage" shows the sweet jazzy side of Roy – as it's a vibes-heavy instrumental with a light stepping groove, perfect for the mellow direction he'd take on other records. The album also features some great off-beat funk numbers that recall earlier albums – including the break-heavy "Spirit Of Doo Doo", plus "Funky Motion" and "The Black Five". CD

✨✧ Roy AyersNo Stranger To Love ... LP
Polydor, 1979. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An oft-overlooked funky soul gem from the incredible Roy Ayers – taking turns with both uptempo material and more smoothed out soul sounds – all done with Roy's trademark jazzy approach to the dancefloor! No Stranger To Love is a sly, and often funky set that deserves to be mentioned with his more famous dancefloor ready work of the late 70s – and if it gets an extra point two for the incredibly cool cover photo, the slow burning grooves more than deliver on the promise! The album does a really nice job of rolling out both the sultry jazzy soul and the funkier Ayers modes, with sweet strings in spots, Roy's incomparable vibes, bass and keyboard grooving, and vocals that set the mood for both the slow jams and the funky stuff! Includes the extended mellow number "Don't Let Our Love Slip Away", one of Roy's better downtempo moments, plus great stuff like "Don't Stop The Feeling", plus "What You Won't Do For Love", "No Stranger To Love/Want You", "Shack Up, Pack Up, It's Up (When I'm Gone)", "Don't Hide Your Love". ✨✧ Roy Ayers & Wayne HendersonStep Into Our Life ... LP
Polydor, 1978. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Talk about a meeting of the minds! At the time of this album, Henderson & Ayers were probably the biggest names in the jazz funk business – both with a smooth soulful style that was pushing the genre onto whole new levels, while still keeping firm roots in jazz – a rare blend that few other artists could handle this well! This initial debut from the pair seems to be much more dominated by the spirit of Roy Ayers' work at the time – particularly the mellow jazzed up work he was laying down on albums like Vibrations and You Send Me – a wicked sound that's rooted in modern soul modes, but filled with plenty of warm jazz elements too. The album's got wonderful vibes and electric piano from Roy – and tracks include "Step Into Our Life", "Lovers Should Always Be Together", "No Deposit No Return", "Ooh Baby", and "For Real". A sweet 70s collection of late 60s work from George Benson – tracks recorded in 1968 for Verve, originally from the albums Giblet Gravy and Goodies! The set list here really does a great job of picking out the best numbers – the kind of clean, lean tunes that were pushing Benson from his soul jazz roots towards a much bigger audience – yet still without any of the commerciality of later years to come. Players on the tracks include Herbie Hancock on piano, Billy Cobham on drums, Ron Carter on bass, and Johnny Pacheco on percussion – and arrangements are by Horace Ott and Tom McIntosh. The first album by Gregg Diamond's Bionic Boogie group – and a cooker of a set that follows strongly from Gregg's previous Hot Butterfly gem! Luther Vandross isn't on board this time around, but the overall groove is still totally great – upbeat, soaring, and put together with a jazzy undercurrent that really keeps things interesting – far more so than most other mainstream disco sets of the time! Brad Baker – of B Baker Chocolate Company – handled the arrangements – and the grooves spin out nicely from Diamond's keyboards, and a tight mix of strings and jazzy horns. Vocals are from the soulful trio of Gwen Guthrie, Ullanda McCullough, and Zachary Sanders – and titles include "Dance Little Dreamer", "Risky Changes", "Boogie Boo", "We Must Believe In Music", "Feel Like Dancing", and "Don't Lose The Number". A dancefloor classic! The album's the second by Gregg Diamond's Bionic Boogie, and head and shoulders above the rest – a sublime blend of soul and club that's hardly been matched again! Diamond manages to make things groove, but never loses sight of the soulful styles that make the record so great – and works here with key contributions from a young Luther Vandross, who gives the album some of the same strong vocal arrangements he brought to his own first two albums on Atlantic! Luther sings lead on the album's legendary track "Hot Butterfly", and works in a group with Cissy Houston on other tracks – sweetly soaring with vocals that go far beyond most disco efforts of the time. Simply sublime, and with classics that include "Hot Butterfly", "Paradise", "Cream (Always Rises To The Top)", "Chains", and "When The Sh*t Hits The Fan (Rocket Pocket)". The first solo album from Johnny Bristol – a genius soul talent who did a bunch of great work for Motown as a writer and arranger, breaking out here on his own! Like so many other behind-the-scenes talents from the late 60s, Johnny turned out to be an excellent soul artist in his own right – even though he only got to cut a rare few albums during the 70s – and this debut album already has him emerging straight away as a fully-formed talent! The vibe is a great mix of Detroit and California Motown – arranged by HB Barnum, and produced with a style that's tight, but still open and fluid too. Backings mix soulful strings with sweet harmonies – and lots of the tunes have a great 70s mellow soul groove. A really great double-length set from James Brown – maybe slightly less iconic than some of his other classics from the early 70s, but a record that really shows the man stretching out and finding his groove! The whole thing is a great example of the new freedoms that Brown was experiencing away from King Records – and the approach not only recreates the mix of funk and soul that you'd find on Hell, but also echoes some of the People Records style to come too – in part because there's a few tracks that have the vibe of a funky 45, and also because James lets the newly-revived Hank Ballard com in and do a 5 minute recitation about how great James has been to his career. The approach is a bit more uptempo than previous albums, but still never at all in a disco/club mode – and James really does strike a strong new chord with the groove here – stretching things out and cooking things up nicely. Rhythms are still quite sharp, although possibly not as dynamic as before – and titles include the great title medley of "Get Up Offa That Thing/Release The Pressure", plus "This Feeling", "Home Again", "I Refuse To Lose", and "Can't Take It With You". JB's wildest album, with a crazy cover that shows him running away from the devil, and great gatefold inner photo with him standing amidst a bunch of declarations of "Hell". The record is a double album filled with lots of different styles from James' funky bag. Nicer bits include "My Thang", "Hell", and "A Man Has To Go Back To The Crossroads" – but the real highlight is the epic 13 minute version of "Papa Don't Take No Mess", as tight and jamming as any cut from Doin' It to Death or The Payback! A really fantastic album from James Brown – and an unusual one, too – as it was only ever issued overseas back in the early 70s! The album's got a title that's similar to one of James' Christmas albums, but it's a completely different record – kind of a condensation of some of his best funky moments from the start of the 70s – with a track list that's overflowing with hard funk killers! A good number of the tracks here are two-parters – showing Brown and the group stretching out in the way that the JBs would take even further in years to come – working through "Make It Funky (parts 1 & 2)", "My Part/Make It Funky (parts 3 & 4)", "I'm A Greedy Man (parts 1 & 2)", and "Hey America (parts 1 & 2)". The set also features the socking classic "Soul Power" – plus "Let It Be Me", "I Cried", and a 1967 live Apollo version of "Kansas City" – plus takes on "Let It Be Me" and "By The Time I Get To Phoenix" that later had applause added on the Super Bad album. Polydor, 1971. Very Good ... $24.99
James Brown really opens up on this early 70s classic – really showing the world the amazing groove he was crafting with his band – who were let loose to jam in the studio, spinning out some really long grooves – which were then cut down to make this sweet little record! The title cut was a big single for James at the time, but it's presented here in its full 9 minute version – a monstrous jam that's equal to anything on the Payback record, or the JBs albums too – and the album also includes the long two-part take of "Escapism", and another funky gem – "Blues & Pants", which snaps along for a solid 9 minutes too! The album's filled with heavy funk, and the longer tracks allow for plenty of instrumental flourishes from Fred, Maceo, and the other JBs – and honestly, the record is more of a People Records session than a Polydor record from James. Quite possibly THE James Brown album of the mid 60s – a solid set of hard-grooving tracks, based around the monster title hit "I Got You (I Feel Good)"! The tune's one of those numbers that has been used a gajillion times over the years in commercials and promos – but which never sounds better than here, on James' original version – one of those cuts that never gets old! The hit's also nicely offset by a number of other more obscure numbers that make the album really worth tracking down – titles that include "I Can't Help It (I Just Do Do Do)", "Good Good Lovin", "I've Got Money", "Three Hearts In A Tangle", "You've Got The Power", and "Love Don't Love Nobody" – all on the rougher side of the JB spectrum. At the end of the 70s, James was combatting the disco movement by forging his own brand of dancefloor music – a super-heavy fusion of straight-on funk, but with a more up-tempo twist and extended in a style to compete with some of the hit 12" singles being issued at the time. This album, although not classic material, is still a great example of James' talent for adaptation, and it features some nice long tracks – like "The Spank", "Nature", "Eyesight", and "Jam" – that still sound pretty good to us today. Sex Machine was one of those "fake" concert albums from James – some original live recordings, other studio tracks tricked out – and put together in a way that never really made much sense. This set is something completely different altogether – a James Brown concert from start to finish, complete with some wickedly sharp patter from the stage – and long tunes that really show his group hitting on all burners! A lost treasure from James Brown & The JBs – a vintage live performance from the early 70s, and one that captures the group at the height of their powers! The format here is very similar to the excellent Revolution Of The Mind set – a totally funky, totally righteous live performance that has James and the group even more energized than in the studio – working with the kind of razor-sharp intensity that made them a legendary funk act – leaping from tune to tune with nary a break at all! Bobby Byrd acts as the MC, and joins James for a bit of vocals – and the group at this point still includes Bootsy Collins on bass, plus loads of great guitar from Catfish Collins, and Fred Wesley on trombone and Jabo Starks on drums. Dave Matthews handled some of the arrangements – and titles include "Soul Power", "Sex Machine", "Bewildered", "It's A New Day", "Ain't It Funky Now", "Brother Rapp", "Super Bad", "Give It Up Or Turnit A Loose", and "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag/I Got You/I Got The Feelin". One of the greatest albums ever from James Brown – even if it wasn't issued during his classic run of funk records in the early 70s! Yet the material here is all from that time – recorded by Polydor when James and the JBs were completely kicking ass in the studio – turning out these monstrous longform funk jams that often gave up too much material to fit on all of his albums – which makes this package an overdue dip into the vaults to rescue some of those treasures! The package first saw the light of day in 1988 – at a time when the genius of James was being rediscovered by younger hip hoppers and DJs – and the set is a love letter to all that James had to offer that scene – with gems that include the lost soul classic "She's The One", a duet with Bobby Byrd called "Since You Been Gone", a live version of "There It Is", an untitled instrumental and another instrumental one called "Funk Bomb" – plus a huge long 9 minute version of the great "People Get Up & Drive Your Funky Soul" from Slaughter's Big Ripoff, and the cuts "Say It Loud & Live", and "Baby Here I Come". Plus, this expanded version also features a 7 minute version of "I Got Ants In My Pants", the track "You've Changed", and a 12 minute alternate mix of "Bodyheat". LP, Vinyl record album

There's still loads of sharp angles and gritty elements in the grooves – and titles include the tasty cut "If You Don't Give a Doggone About It", done with the JBs, one that has a nice choppy "Doin It To Death" sort of groove – plus "People Who Criticize", "Give Me Some Skin", "Have A Happy Day", "Bessie", "Summertime", "People Wake Up & Live", and "Take Me Higher & Groove Me". A masterpiece of funky soul – and one of the greatest albums of the early 70s! It all comes together on this one – funk, soul, politics, and production – and the record is still one of the clearest examples of James Brown's genius that you'll ever find! Recorded during the same sessions as the JBs album Damn Right I Am Somebody – Payback has the group backing James with amazing intensity, playing on and on for very long stretches, improvising jams that perfectly match the vocals, which are often as improvised as the music. The most famous example of this style at work is "The Payback", which begins with a simple head arrangement, then has James riffing off on politics and power, letting the band come in at just the right moment, dropping solos that are still some of the best ever recorded on a funk album. The rest of the album's equally great, and even though most tracks run close to 10 minutes, and the album's a 2LP set, most of the material stays fresher than any 3 minute funk record we've ever heard. Some tracks are separated by these cool voices that rise up as seques – and titles include "Stone To The Bone", "Mind Power", "Take Some Leave Some", and "Shoot Your Shot". LP, Vinyl record album

An amazing double-live album that's to concert records what James Brown's Payback was to the sound of studio funk! Like that classic, this is a double-length 2LP set that really has James and the JBs stretching out and doing their thing – working here in a setting that's supposed to be the "part 3" to the famous Live At The Apollo albums – but with a vibe that really shows the different spirit of the Godfather in the 70s! The JBs are wonderful – really showing their chops here, in a way that maybe even blows the tightness of the previous James Brown Band to pieces – as the long tracks allow for plenty of solos, rhythm changes, and monstrous moments of soul from James. An amazing James Brown live set from the crucial year of 1968 – the show that marked the debut of "Say It Loud I'm Black & I'm Proud" – a cut that would become an anthem for much of America in the years to come! The feel here is somewhat similar to Brown's famous Boston show of the same year – a mix of blistering uptempo funk tracks, played by the band at a clip that's even faster than their studio sides, mixed with a few more stripped-down, personal cuts that feature James getting a bit more intimate with the audience. Raw power and righteous energy from James Brown – a set that still has all the best funk elements of his longer-form albums of the time, but which also packs an even stronger political message too! The vibe of the record is clear from the image on the cover – the most powerful since Payback – and James is even more focused in the lyrics, which bite harder than some of his other commentary of the period – while still allowing the JBs plenty of room to serve up some heavy funk in the process! Titles include the classics "Public Enemy #1" and "King Heroin", both hard soul political tracks – and the funkier side of The Godfather is represented by the killer cuts "Talkin Loud & Sayin Nothing" and James own version of "I Need Help" (which was also recorded by Bobby Byrd). There's a bluesy undercurrent here, but sharpened much more strongly for the funk generation – which takes Cat Mother way past contemporaries like Canned Heat or The Steve Miller Band – yet also still has the gritty power of both of those groups. Jimi's production is surprisingly great – fused tightly at times, in ways that almost preface some modes that bigger acts would take rootsy sounds in the 70s, but much more revolutionary here. ✨✧ Stanley ClarkeChildren Of Forever ... LP
Polydor, 1973. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Quite possibly the hippest album that Stanley Clarke ever cut – a stretched-out soulful batch of jazz-tinged tracks – very much in the same spirit as the more righteous soul jazz underground of the time! In a way, the record would be much more at home on a label like Strata East than it would at Polydor – thanks to vocals from Andy Bey and Dee Dee Bridgewater – and a group lineup that includes Pat Martino on guitars, Art Webb on flute, Lenny White on drums, and Chick Corea on keyboards! Corea produced, and there's a bit of the free-floating style of Return To Forever here – but the overall vibe is a lot more soulful too, and reminds us a fair bit of some of the earliest work by Norman Connors or Carlos Garnett – both of whom used Bridgewater as a vocalist in similar settings. Titles include "Children Of Forever", "Butterfly Dreams", "Sea Journey", and "Unexpected Days". LP, Vinyl record album

Chick CoreaFriends ... CD
Polydor, 1978. Used ... $6.99
There's Smurfs on the cover of this one, but the album's no cartoony effort – and is instead one of the nicest Chick Corea albums of the 70s! The sound here is nicely restrained from some of Chick's more ambitious records – and is done in a way that almost recalls some of Bob James' best mellow moments on CTI – with Chick playing Fender Rhodes and acoustic piano in the lead, and working with a hip quartet that includes Joe Farrell on saxes and flute, Steve Gadd on percussion, and Eddie Gomez on bass! The round, warm tones of Gomez's bass give the album a wonderfully soulful feel – and Chick himself really response to the great company on the session, by hitting a sound that's arguably even hipper than some of his previous albums. Titles include "Waltse For Dave", "Samba Song", "Sicily", "Cappucino", "Children's Song #15", "The One Step", and "Friends". CD

Chick CoreaMad Hatter ... CD
Verve/Polydor, 1978. Used ... $14.99
A goofy cover, and a tribute to Alice In Wonderland, but a nice little record – one that has Chick Corea playing a wide variety of keyboards next to acoustic piano – coming up with a sound that's sometimes cosmic, sometimes spacious, but always a lot more creative than most of his contemporaries! The album's got a bit of a high concept feel – as strings and larger arrangements sometimes slide into the mix – and all compositions, arrangements, and production were handled by Chick. And just when things seem as if they might get a bit too arty, tunes slide back into a more straightforward jazzy mode – keeping some of the best Corea elements in place over the course of the record. Other players include Herbie Hancock, John Thomas, Harvey Mason, and Joe Farrell – and Gayle Moran sings a bit on the record. Titles include "Dear Alice", "The Woods", "Rhapsody", "The Mad Hatter", "Falling Alice", and "Humpty Dumpty". CD

Chick CoreaMy Spanish Heart ... CD
Polydor (Germany), 1976. Used ... $5.99
Given that Chick Corea first got his start working in the New York Latin scene back in the 60s, the album's a bit of a return to his roots – even if the general theme here is Spanish, and not Afro-Cuban! The Corea Spanish Heart here is cast in some darker, more contemplative tones than more traditional Latin sides – but it borrows a wonderful array of modes from genres past – including bits of strings, percussion, and an overall more ambitious approach that sometimes shows up in Chick's piano work, or in the general construction of the tunes. The double-length set features a wide variety of Spanish-influenced numbers – played by Corea on acoustic piano and a variety of keyboards, with other players who include Don Alias, Jean Luc Ponty, Stanley Clarke, and Steve Gadd. Titles include "Love Castle", "The Gardens", "Night Streets", "The Hilltop", "Armando's Rhumba", "Prelude To El Bozo", "Spanish Fantasy", and "My Spanish Heart". CD

Creative SourceConsider The Source ... LP
Polydor, 1976. Very Good+ ... $11.99
Sublime jazzy soul from Creative Source – a group who managed to step way way past their early hits with a sound that's even more sophisticated on later albums! The groove is wonderfully produced by Brad Shapiro, who brings in just a bit of deeper soul to the proceedings, but also manages to work some real magic with the sweet harmonies of the group – in a way that just plain great! Includes the cuts "Singin Funky Music Turns Me On", "Under Your Spell", "There's No Substitute", "Troubled Lady", "Magic", and "I'd Find You Anywhere". LP, Vinyl record album

Polydor, 1975. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
Smooth jazzy soul from this massively overlooked group from the 70s! Although many know their bigger recordings on Sussex, these Polydor sides are much more appealing to us, and have a nice jazzy soul sound that's similar to work of groups like Side Effect – with a mixture of harmony soul and more complicated arrangements, touched by a bit of funk, and some more sophisticated modern soul production. This LP includes an excellent funky cut called "Funky Luvah", plus the tracks "Pass The Feelin On", "Turn On To Music", "Don't Be Afraid", and "I Want Ya (Loving Me)". LP, Vinyl record album

Polydor/Universal (Japan), 1980. New Copy (pic cover, reissue)... $22.99
A fantastic bit of modern soul – a rare Polydor single from the start of the 80s – but one that we'd put next to some of our favorite mellow soul groovers from the decade before! "Stay With Me" has a vibe that's almost Roy Ayers – midtempo, and funky stepping – a nice edge in the groove, but not too much – with female vocals that cascade beautifully over the lyrics! "You're So Unclear" is even cooler – a slower number, but with a deeper groove – and both tracks have fantastic handling by arranger Morris Bailey! 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Lee DorseyYes We Can (180 gram green vinyl pressing) ... LP
Polydor/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1970. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Massive work by Lee Dorsey – recorded years after his classics in the 60s, and even funkier overall! Lee's really cooking on all burners here – working with the production team of Allen Toussaint and Marshall Sehorn, and getting some incredible backing from The Meters – who are at the height of their powers during this period! In a way, the set's one of the ultimate New Orleans sessions of the 70s – a culmination of all the best elements that were percolating together in the 60s indie underground, simmered together perfectly in a tighter 70s Polygram funk mode! Includes the massive original version of "Yes We Can" – way better than any of the subsequent cover versions – plus great takes on"Who's Gonna Help Brother Get Further", "Sneakin' Sally Through The Alley", "Gator Tail", "Tears Tears & More Tears", "When The Bill's Paid", and "Occapella". ✨✧ El ChiclesViva Tirado ... CD
Polydor/Pregador Do Som (Germany), 1970. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A funky killer from this legendary European group – a record that's filled with as much funk and soul as the Latin elements you might have guessed from the title! El Chicles may have been a studio project, but they were a heck of a funky one – with hard drums, tight bass, and mixed-up Latin funky groove that was always pretty right on, no matter what the material happened to be! This cold little jammer from the early 70s features the group riffing hard on funky covers of "Viva Tirado", "Ode To Billy Joe", and "I'm A Man" – and grooving even better on the original tracks "Drug Bay" and the break-heavy "At Nee-Ko". There's some excellent organ in the mix, and the whole thing's packaged in a very cheesy cover! CD

Fairport ConventionFirst Album (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Polydor/Universal (UK), 1968. New Copy ... $8.99 11.98
The brilliant first album from Fairport Convention – working here in a sound that's much less fully-formed than in later years, but in a really great way! So many things are different here – the guitars are maybe harder and more electric, the vocals of a young Ian Matthews (as Ian MacDonald) are really wonderful, and even female singer Judy Dyble brings a very different quality to the group than the later work of Sandy Denny! These guys are less straight folk here, and more open to a lot of new ideas – great ideas, and ones that really keep things creative and interesting – and maybe looking forward more musically, than the later (and important) backward look the group would take. Titles include a brilliant remake of Emmitt Rhodes' "Time Will Show The Wiser" – plus "I Don't Know Where I Stand", "Chelsea Morning", "It's Alright Ma It's Only Witchcraft", "One Sure Thing", "M1 Breakdown", and "Jack O'Diamonds". CD features four bonus tracks – "Reno Nevada", "Morning Glory", "If I Had A Ribbon Bow", and "Suzanne". CD

Fat MattressFat Mattress (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Polydor/Esoteric (UK), 1969. New Copy ... $13.99
One of the better moments of the underground scene on Polydor at the end of the 60s – a pretty cool little group led by Noel Redding! There's a few slightly soulful moments on the set that make it nicely appealing to our ears – a bit hippy dippy to be sure, but with some nice drums, good production, and even some guest flute by the legendary Chris Wood. Jimi's shadow will always blot out the excellence of the other members of The Experience, and Fat Mattress is shows had more to offer than outside the harder edged realms of rock. Titles include "Mr Moonshine", "All Night Drinker", "Petrol Pump Assistant", "How Can I Live", "Everything's Blue", and "Bright New Way". This CD edition from Esoteric includes 8 bonus tracks, including rare singles and session tracks: "Naturally", "Iridescent Butterfly", "Magic Forecst", "Little Girl In White", "Eric The Red", "and more.
