✨✧ Canned HeatBoogie With Canned Heat (Pickwick) ... LP
Liberty/Pickwick, 1968. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
The record that really broke Canned Heat out of the pack – still plenty bluesy, but with the trippier touches you might guess from the cover's psychedelic image – a perfect summation of that unique placement the group had on the late 60s Cali scene! The record's the one that gave the world the landmark "On The Road Again" – a tune used in countless films and commercials over the years, and graced with the completely unique vocals of Bob Hite – a singer who doesn't care if he sounds authentic, and who's more than happy enough to bring his own spirit to the music! That statement also defines the rest of the group too – as they let loose on titles that include "World In A Jug", "My Crime", "An Owl Song", "Fried Hockey Boogie", "Amphetamine Annie", "Whiskey Headed Woman No 2", and "Turpentine Moan". ✨✧ Edwin Starr25 Miles (Pickwick pressing) ... LP
Pickwick, 1969. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Socking soul, and a key album in the career of Detroit powerhouse Edwin Starr – one that had him stepping forth with a proud, loud groove all the way through! Starr's work was always a bit harder than the regular Motown bag – no doubts because of his more indie soul roots – and on this set, Edwin comes clean with a punched-up style that's heard to famous effect on the anthemic title hit "25 Miles", and which is nicely followed up by a great batch of tracks that includes "Gonna Keep on Tryin", "You Beat Me To The Punch", "Soul City", "Strugglin' Man", "Mighty Good Lovin", and "Backyard Lovin Man". ✨✧ Jr Walker & The All StarsJr Walker & The All Stars Play Shotgun (Pickwick) ... LP
SOUL, 1965. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
One of the all-time classics from Jr Walker & The All Stars – key proof that Motown could groove even when nobody was laying down vocals! As you might guess from the title, the album features the group's huge hit "Shotgun", plus lots of other cool funky little tracks like "Cleo's Back", "Tune Up", "Do The Boomerang", "Shake & Fingerpop", "Shoot Your Shot", and lots more! The album's one of the group's strongest for Motown – and features that tight snapping groove that helped Jr take the tenor out of the R&B sound of the 50s, and place it into a whole new mode for the soulful 60s! ✨✧ Cannonball Adderley with Sergio MendesQuiet Nights Of Quiet Stars ... LP
Capitol/Pickwick, 1962. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
Cannonball Adderley recorded this nice little groover in 1962, when American musicans were just getting on the bossa tip, and still keeping things pretty authentic. The record was cut in New York with Sergio Mendes' early Bossa Rio group – the legendary Brazilian jazz ensemble that featured Paulo Moura, Dom Um Romao, and Durval Ferreira. The mixture of tight bossa rhythms and Cannon's soulful sax is totally great – and it's only because the Riverside label was folding at the time that the record never got bigger fame. Includes the cuts "Joyce's Samba", "Clouds", "Minha Saudade", "Corcovado", "Batida Diferentes", and "Sambops". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has light wear and aging.)

✨✧ Paul Desmond & Gerry MulliganPaul Desmond & Gerry Mulligan (aka Two Of A Mind) ... LP
RCA/Pickwick, 1962. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A reunion of sorts for Paul Desmond and Gerry Mulligan – given that the pair had played together on record 5 years before, in a similar session for Verve! This album's almost lighter and more airy than the previous one – as it's done in a mode that echoes strongly with Desmond's own genius at RCA at the time – using a piano-less quartet format that has both horns carving out their own subtle space in sound, hanging together, but each occupying a different range of tonal color. The tracks are relatively longish, and the pair dart around each other nicely on tracks like "All The Things You Are", "Out Of Nowhere", "Blight Of The Fumble Bee", and "The Way You Look Tonight". LP, Vinyl record album
(Late 70s issue.)

✨✧ Sonny RollinsGreen Dolphin Street ... LP
Quintessence Jazz/Pickwick, Mid 60s. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Tremendous work from Sonny Rollins – one of his most sharp-edged sessions of the mid 60s, and a bold departure from some of his previous work for RCA, with a crackling sense of energy that more than lives up to the exclamation point in the title – a starker quality than some of Sonny's earlier records, and one that brings out some sharper tones in his horn, even on the mellower numbers. The rhythm support is loose, but somewhat soulful and spontaneous – and features Ray Bryant on piano, Walter Booker on bass, and Mickey Roker on drums – an unusual pairing for Sonny, but that's what makes them so great. In a way, the album's almost Rollins' equivalent of John Coltrane's earlier Ballads album for Impulse – in that it includes familiar tunes, but remade into completely new numbers by the sound of the leader. Titles include "Green Dolphin Street", "Three Little Words", "Hold Em Joe", "The Blue Room", plus "Alfie's Theme". LP, Vinyl record album
(70s issue. Cover has light wear.)

✨✧ Arthur PrysockSings Only For You ... CD
Old Town/Pickwick (UK), 1962. Used ... Out Of Stock
A beautiful record from a hell of a great singer – one who established a genre that was all his own, and set a whole new standard for male jazz singers in the 60s! Arthur Prysock's got some of the depth of the Billy Eckstine generation that came before him – but he's also got a mode that's more personal, almost conversational too – sophisticated, but never stand-offish – just this hip cat that really knows how to deliver a tune and make it his own! The arrangements here really fit that style too – nicely understated, but again with all these modern elements that really make things great – as Prysock makes his way through tunes that include "Only For You", "Let Her Wonder", "When I Fall In Love", "Imagination", "Don't Quit Me Now", and "Time After Time". ✨✧ Smokey Robinson & The MiraclesPocketful (aka Pocket Full Of Miracles) (photo cover) ... LP
Pickwick, 1969. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A great one by The Miracles! Smokey and the group are clearly pushing the envelope here – stretching out for a deeper harmony sound, moving towards some of the smoother styles they'd use a bit more in the 70s. The result is a slightly-confused album, but one with some really interesting material that gives the group a chance to experiment more with their vocal phrasing. Includes the heavy soul number "Flower Girl", plus the tracks "Who's Gonna Take The Blame", "Darling Dear", "Wishful Thinking", "Point It Out", and "Don't Take It So Hard". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ SeedsRaw & Alive – The Seeds In Concert – Merlin's Music Box ... LP
GNP, 1968. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the great fake live albums of the 60s – a set that promises to be a concert performance from the title and cover, but which actually just features The Seeds playing live together in the studio! Yet that little trick is hardly a problem – because the album's the last-ever from this seminal group, and captures them in a format that really lets them take off! Their studio sessions were always great, but this one's got a special edge from letting all the instruments work together in the same space at once, with no edits or dubs. The core combo sounds wonderful – searing guitar, trippy keyboard lines, and all the sneering vocals the young Sky Saxon can muster – served up over tracks that include "Mr. Farmer", "No Escape", "Satisfy You", "Night Time Girl", "Up In Her Room", "Gypsy Plays His Drums", "Mumble And Bumble", "Forest Outside Your Door", "900 Million People Daily All Making Love", and "Pushin' Too Hard". ✨✧ Five Man Electrical BandFive Man Electrical Band ... LP
Capitol, 1969. Sealed ... Out Of Stock
A jangle-pop spectacular from The Five Man Electrical Band – an incredibly groovy outfit from late 60s Canada! Although issued at the end of the 60s, the album's got a sweetly-crafted feel that sounds a lot like some of the best mid 60s pop – particularly that coming from overseas – almost a lost Brit Invasion sort of sound, but one that's tuned with a few odder touches that show the group's ear for some of the west coast musical changes of the time. All tunes are incredibly catchy, and recorded with great focus on the jangly lead guitar – so much so that the vocals are almost buried down a bit more in the mix, which makes for a kind of cooly tripped-out sound. Titles include "Maple Lane", "Fancy Dancin Man", "Black Sheep Of The Family", "Running Back", "Didn't Know The Time", "Five Man Electrical Band", and "Private Train". CD also features a whopping 9 tracks added to the original album – some by the group as The Staccatos – with titles that include "Half Past Midnight", "Weather Man", "Super Girl", "Let's Run Away", "Catch The Love Parade", and "Whisper Words".
