Peven EverettReflections Of Misconception ... CD
Studio Confession, 2006. New Copy ... $6.99 13.99
One of the boldest, fullest, and most soulful albums we've ever heard from Peven Everett – a set that's overflowing with enough classic influences to rival the genius of Stevie Wonder in the 70s! The groove here is really tremendous – not just house rhythms or beats and keys, but a fuller approach to soul that fills in even the smallest spaces – one that flows out majestically, and which is matched by some of Peven's best vocals ever – and that's saying a lot, given his genius in the past! There's some real instant classics here, and the album's got a new sense of confidence that comes through in the very first note. Titles include "The Superstar", "Another Tender Moment", "I Don't Want To Love Nobody Else", "I'm Missing You", "I Can't Keep From Loving You", "Kickin Up Dust", and "Party Of The Year". CD

✨✧ Peven EverettKing Of Hearts ... CD
Studio Confession, 2013. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
We haven't heard from Peven Everett in quite some time – and the respite's been a great one, because it seems that Peven's really regrouped, found new strengths, and has come out with his best record in years! The whole thing's one of the best produced, packaged, and put-together sets we've ever heard from this legendary soul singer from the underground – and one of the few that really live up to the genius we've seen in his great performances on local stages here in the Windy City! Grooves are upbeat, yet warmer than house or dance – and Peven's vocals seem to have really matured a lot, and find a range of tones that's even greater than before – bringing new expression in at a level we hardly would have expected. The keyboards are great, too – skipping along strongly with the rhythms, and showing Peven's roots in jazz – and titles include "Taking Me Back", "You Get Me", "Kissing Another", "We Gone Be Butta", "You Rock Me", "I Just Wanna Make You Happy", "I Can Be Your Boyfriend", and "One Way Ticket". ✨✧ Peven EverettDear Europe ... CD
Studio Confession, 2008. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Peven Everett sends a letter out to his huge European fan base – but the sound here is every bit as great as his other Chicago-crafted grooves! The rhythms are a bit upbeat this time around – not really house, but a warmly flowing sort of style – that trance-like mode that Peven hits so beautifully in his live performances, peppered here with some great keyboard lines and Everett's seductively soulful vocals! Even without the British flag, we're sure this set would win global appeal – and it's certainly one of the strongest we've heard from Peven in recent years. Titles include "Soul Music", "The Best In Town", "Meet Me On The Dance Floor", "Brothers & Sisters", "Fantastic Night", and "Never Give Up On Love". CD

✨✧ Peven EverettEasy Livin' ... CD
Unified/Studio Confession, 2006. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Another bold step forward for Peven Everett – easily one of the real front runners in the 21st Century soul scene! The album's got a tighter, more unified feel than even some of Peven's previous work – a confident, almost majestic approach that has Everett's wonderful vocals coming through with real clarity – finally elevated to the level of major stardom that Peven deserves, in a lineage that includes Donny Hathaway, Leroy Hutson, and Roy Ayers! The rhythms are staggered nicely throughout – and include a few more skittish numbers next to the smoother tunes – creating an unsettling vibe that further expands Everett's emotional palette, and which sometimes brings of funk into the mix. And best of all, this album actually seems to be an all-original conception – and not just a label repackaging of one of Peven's home-made records, as was the case with some of his other recent official releases. Titles include "Easy Livin", "See You Tonight", "Sexy One", "Don't You", "Steady Now", "When You Touch Me", "Got To Get Down", and "Put Your Back In It". CD

✨✧ Peven EverettMedicine Man ... CD
Studio Confession, 2011. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Soulful medicine served up by the mighty Peven Everett – one of the most spiritual talents in the underground today, and an artist who can definitely live up to the title of this set! The grooves are warm and flowing – often on the more upbeat side of the Peven spectrum, which means a bit of a house influence at the bottom, but a solid soulful delivery all the way through! There's plenty of sweet keyboards, and Peven's vocals are still right on the money – a mix of spoken and beautifully sung verses, the latter of which have that sweet crackle that always makes him sound so great. Titles include "Paradise Kiss", "Drop The Attitude", "Help Me", "A Player's Work Is Never Done", "Your Lovin Eases My Mind", and "Decisions". CD

✨✧ Peven EverettParty Of The Year ... CD
Studio Confession, 2009. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Sublime soul from Peven Everett – a beautifully-crafted album that moves well beyond some of his homemade productions of recent years! This set's got all the silky soul that first made us love Peven's music – that open, flowing groove that's almost organic, and which makes you feel like Everett's creating the whole album spontaneously – riffing on a groove, opening up vocally, and soaring to the skies with his amazing sense of rhythm and timing! Instrumentation is usually somewhat spare, but the album's got a fuller sound and richer feel than some of his other recent sets – that eternal glow that Peven hits when he's definitely operating at his best. A number of tunes here share names with cuts from other Everett releases, but these performances all seem to be new – and titles include "Street Walker", "New Day", "Anymore", "Don't Go", "Special", "Simmer", "First Choice", and "Gorgeous Girl". ✨✧ Peven EverettPower Soul ... CD
Studio Confession, 2006. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Peven Everett in all his glory – stepping forth in one of his best-produced albums in years! As with most of Peven's records, all music and vocals are from the man himself – a one-man show, but with a lot more going on than most full groups! Peven is really at the top of his game here – gliding over the top of the tunes with a sense of soul and spirit that's really tremendous – warm vocals, sweet keys, and snapping rhythms – but all wrapped up with a depth that none of his contemporaries can match! The record's key proof that Peven can easily be THE biggest soul star of the decade when he gets things focused – and the record's awash with instant classics that include "All My Life", "Can't Do Without", "Surely Shorty", "Stuck", "Just A Girl", "Sexy Make Up", and "Washing". ✨✧ Peven EverettRound 2 ... CD
Studio Confession, 2008. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A gem of a record from the classic years of Peven Everett – songs that seem to flow effortlessly from his fingers on the keyboard and his warmly-crafted vocals – smooth, but always grooving – and a perfect match for the richness of the tunes! The music was created by Peven himself – he's a master of the bedroom studio – but it's got rhythms that tie back to the roots of Chicago house, and soulful expression that goes back even further – and which makes us feel like Peven would have been a huge soul music superstar back in the 70s! Titles include "Easy Life", "Bangin", "Chuchin", "Gotta Do It", "Sexy One", "Give It Up", "Back In It", and "Don't U". CD

✨✧ Peven EverettSaturday Night Orchestra ... CD
Studio Confession, 2006. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A cheesy cover, but a really wonderful little record – and definitely something different from Chicago soul wizard Peven Everett! The style here is a lot jazzier than before – almost a mix of 70s CTI funk with some of Peven's more house-driven rhythms – in a way that captures an older club aesthetic beautifully, and which soars along with a tremendously full sound throughout! Peven's work on keyboards dominates the record – but it's really warm and flowing, with jazz-based phrasing that sounds great on top of the more straightforward club rhythms in the set. Titles include "Treasure Dance", "Hot Rhapsody", "City Scapes", "Evening Light", and "Glamour Parties". CD

✨✧ Peven EverettSincerely Yours ... CD
Studio Confession, 2008. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the most sweetly soulful sets we've ever heard from Peven Everett – a laidback session that's a nice change from some of his more upbeat grooves – and one that places him solidly in the territory of mid 70s Isley Brothers or Marvin Gaye! Tunes are simple, but have a real sense of warmth – thanks to Peven's mellow vocals and keyboard work, and occasional jazzy touches that shade things in with a nice sense of color. There's beats at the bottom of most tunes, but they never move too fast – more in a mellow or midtempo mode that's totally great – and a whole new side of Peven's mighty talents. Titles include "Pressure", "First Choice", "Always Love You", "Enough Of You", "I Know When I Met", "Soul Music", "Do It Again For The Last Time", "I Ain't Goin Nowhere", and "Last Night". CD

✨✧ Peven EverettSpeed Of Light ... CD
Studio Confession, 2002. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Excellent work from Peven Everett – another one of his home-made underground soul CDs, issued by Peven himself as a big "F#$% You" to the major labels that have screwed around with him in the past! The CD is a brilliant mix of soul, jazz, house, and touches of Afro-centric rhythms – crafted in a swirling mix that dips back 30 years into the history of soul, yet still points the way towards a richly positive future – sounding a heck of a lot more "real" than just about anyone else we can think of on the market today, and showing Everett as a burgeoning soul genius – on a par with D'Angelo, Norman Harris, Donnie Hathaway – and, dare we say it, Marvin Gaye. Tracks include "Testin Me", "Stroll By The River", "Run Around", "One More Time", "Puerto Rico", and "Your Letter". 13 tracks in all! CD

✨✧ Peven EverettStudio Confessions ... CD
ABB/Studio Confession, 2002. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The first full and official album from Peven Everett – a professional release that pulls together the strands from his underground, self-released albums of the past few years! After knocking around as a young up and comer on the east coast scene, Peven went underground in Chicago a while back, and only issued titles in handmade format, on CD-R releases with little or no artwork. This album's the first one that he's issued with professional packaging, formatting, and recording quality – and it's the culmination of a number of years of woodshedding in the studio. The set's great – and builds off of tracks that Peven recorded for his previous self-issued Speed Of Light CD, plus new tracks – all produced and presented to perfection, in a setting that's sure to rise Peven's star as much as we've been hoping. The whole thing's wonderful – smooth, soulful, and classic – in a mode that we haven't heard since D'Angelo or Omar first came onto the scene. Titles include "World Love", "Everyday Girl", "They So Cold", "I Can Give It", "Sankofa", "Say It Back", and "I Wanna Make Love". CD

✨✧ Peven Everett & Upper EshStar Studded ... CD
Satelite Soundscape, 2003. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A wicked blend of hip hop and underground soul from Peven Everett and Upper Esh – warm Peven-styled beats and keys underneath, and rhymes by Asian A and Pretty Toan over the top! If you dig Peven's self-produced albums, you'll find plenty in here to like – as a lot of the tracks have that sweet bubbling homemade soul sound that's one of the best aspects of Peven's work. And while the rhymes are sometimes a bit stiff, the album's really more of a soul set than a hip hop one – with lots of sung choruses that make the tracks come off a lot more like Peven's other tunes than anything else. Titles include "Actin Fake", "Right Turn", "Playin Games Wit It", "We Gotcha Goin", "Long Road", "Calm Down", "Girl You Should Come Through", and "Catch Me On The Way Up". CD

Singer Billie Jewell gets some great grooves here – backings and production from Peven Everett, who put the whole thing together and co-wrote the tunes with Billie! Jewell is something of a muse for legendary underground soul figure Everett – a female singer that lets him unleash a whole new side of his creativity, in ways that often have Billie soaring over clubby tracks like some old school disco diva! Titles include "I Know You're Heaven", "Ovah You", "Why We Breakin Up", "Sure In Love", "Eye Candy", and "How Can I Be Sure". CD

AyroElectroniclovefunk ... CD
Omoamusic (Netherlands), 2004. Used ... $6.99
An instant classic of spacey soul – and a brilliant full length set by Ayro! Ayro's been bubbling under for a few years running – hitting bit notes with his scattered singles and compilation tracks – and showing that Detroit is soon to be on top of the sound of 21st Century Soul! The sound here is somewhere on a loose line between 4Hero and Peven Everett – skittish in the beats and keys, with a funky future fusion approach that drives the groove – but also quite soulful on the vocal end of things, pushing a gospelly style of voice into the stratosphere explored by the instrumental grooves! Titles include "Drink", "Truth", "Is She Seeing Me", "Let This Love", "Burning Brightly", "Hope That Springs From A World Of Pain", and "Days To Come (Ayro mix)". CD

✨✧ Anthony NicholsonNecessary Phazes ... CD
Track Mode, 2005. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A beautiful little set from Anthony Nicholson – a fitting tribute to the depth of his genius, and the kind of full length album we've been waiting for for years! Like Peven Everett, another Chicago contemporary, Anthony's one of those talents that always seems to be getting press and mentions – but never as much space in the record bins as he should. This set should more than correct that set, as it served up the full range of Anthony's vision we've been digging for years on singles and remixes – in a mode that's as rhythmic and progressive as the work we know from that side of the spectrum, but which also comes across with a more complete sound overall. Some of the tracks have really great vocals – but the main highlight is Anthony's great work on keyboards and acoustic percussion – both of which are blended here together in a richly organic way! Titles include "Welcome To The Future", "Subliminal Messages", "Newjazzfunkmovement", "Get Up", "Electro Disco", "Trust Yourself", "Dirty Soul", and "Don't Stop". CD

✨✧ Joey NegroProduced With Love (with bonus CD) ... CD
Z Records (UK), 2017. Used 2CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Joey Negro's got a decades-long love of disco – one that began at a time when so many other artists were going for colder, easier ways of serving up a groove – and Joey was a rare talent who could really take things back to the glory days of the clubs! That talent has only gotten greater and greater over the years – through projects done under Negro's own name, his work with the Sunburst Band, and even his unstoppable efforts to work as a dancefloor historian through his Z Records label! All that energy, and more, seems to come to play here – on a set that soars to the skies with the very first note – reminding us that, alongside Bluey from Incognito, Joey's one of the few cats who can get a classic sound completely right, right from the start – but also have a way of sending the music forward for a new generation too! The album's a dream right from the start – with great work from Kaidi Tatham on keyboards on some tracks – and an array of great guest singers young and old, who include Angela Johnson, Donna Gardier, Lifford, Alex Mills, Diane Charlemagne, Melba Moore, and Linda Clifford. Titles include "Must Be The Music (orig disco version)", "Everything", "Into The Blue", "Overnight Sensation", "Won't Let Go", "Anyway", "Prove That You're Feeling Me", "It's More Fun To Compute", "In Search Of The Dream", and "Stomp Your Feet". Features a full CD with bonus mixes and productions by Joey – including "Anyway (Joey Negro rmx)" by Melba Moore, "Spanish Hustle (Joey Negro rmx)" by Fatback Band, "Love Is Thicker Than Water" by Peven Everett, "Into The Blue" by Alex Mills, "Message In Our Music (Joey Negro rmx)" by The O'Jays, "What A Life (Joey Negro rmx)" by Gwen Guthrie, "Must Be The Music (disco boogie xtravaganza dub)" by Joey Negro, and "Dancing Into The Stars" by Joey Negro & Horse Meat Disco.
