Sheila ESheila E In Romance 1600 ... LP
Paisley Park, 1985. Near Mint- ... $9.99
Sheila E's follow up to "The Glamorous Life", with equally Prince influenced mid 80s production. Unlike some of the other projects that Prince pursued with a Svengali like presence, Sheila E was a great talent on her own, with a sound built around Prince's pop-soul melodies and her own hard driving Latin percussion. 8 tracks in all, including "A Love Bizarre", "Romance 1600", "Dear Michaelangelo" and "Sister Fate". LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes the printed inner sleeve. Cover is bent at the bottom left corner.)

Sheila ESheila E In The Glamorous Life ... CD
Paisley Park, 1984. Used ... $24.99
A fantastic meeting of two generations of soulful music – Sheila E, the daughter of Cali Latin soul genius Coke Escovedo, meets up with the snappingly funky world of Prince – and results in one of the strongest records of Sheila's career! The singer/percussionist had already been around for about a decade on record – turning out some great Latin work with her brother Pete in the Bay Area – but this set has Sheila going of the top with a great Paisley Park groove, really working with lots of influences from Prince, but still also getting plenty of Latin elements of her own into the mix – on long tracks that are filled with wonderful rhythms and plenty of great percussion too! Titles include the sublime title cut "The Glamorous Life" – plus "The Belle Of St Mark", "Oliver's House", "Strawberry Shortcake", "Noon Rendezvous", and "Next Time Wipe The Lipstick Off Your Collar". CD
(Out of print, booklet has some light wear.)

✨✧ FamilyFamily ... LP
Paisley Park, 1985. Very Good Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great lost album of 80s soul, and one of the best side projects that Prince ever worked on! This was the only record from the Family, a group that consisted of former members of The Time – and it's very much in the Prince mode of the mid 80s, but also with a voice that's a bit different, perhaps more conventionally soulful. They manage to hit both of the best sides of the Paisley Park sound – and the record's got some nice funk numbers – "Screams Of Passion" and "High Fashion" – plus some nice mellow cuts, including the original recording of "Nothing Compares 2 U" (done to greater fame later by Sinead O'Connor.) LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes the printed inner sleeve. Cover has light wear.)

MazaratiMazarati ... LP
Paisley Park, 1986. Near Mint- ... $11.99
A short-lived Prince side project from the mid 80s – pretty tinny, and decidedly weaker than his own work, or that of groups like The Family or The Time. Titles include "Strawberry Lover", "Suzy", "Player's Ball", "Lonely Girl On Bourbon Street", and "100 MPH". Almost worth it for the ridiculous fashion/make-up shown on back. LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover is lightly stained and bent a bit along the spine.)

✨✧ PrinceAround The World In A Day ... LP
Paisley Park, 1985. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A mad bit of soul psychedelia from Prince – a record that sounds better and better over the years, and which stands out from most of his 80s work thanks to some really unique production and songwriting! After Purple Rain, Prince did anything but wince in the face of living up to such a massive crossover smash – and if Around The World didn't move nearly as many units, it stands pretty tall these days. A mix of Revolution pop funk & soul, with a more swirling, self consciously psychedelic pop. Titles include the hit "Raspberry Beret", "Paisley Park" (with melody so strong, no wonder Prince held onto the name for other ventures) plus "Around The World In A Day", "America", "Temptation", "Pop Life", and "Condition Of The Heart". LP, Vinyl record album

Paisley Park, 1990. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Well, it wasn't Purple Rain – nor Parade – but this 3rd Prince soundtrack still had some nice moments, thanks to an ever-expanding Paisley Park family that included George Clinton, Morris Day, and Mavis Staples! The older funk acts don't come off as nicely as Prince and The Time do – but with 2LPs worth of material, there's enough good numbers to pick out of the set. Titles include "New Power Generation", "Can't Stop This Feeling I Got", "Love Machine", "Tick Tick Bang", "Shake", "Thieves In The Temple", "Still Would Stand All Time", "Graffiti Bridge", and "The Latest Fashion". CD

It's the late 80s and after the decision to keep the Black album in the can, Prince gives us Lovesexy. Not his finest moment, but far from his weakest, with more than a couple nice numbers like "Alphabet Street", "Lovesexy", "When 2 R In Love" and "Anna Stesia". CD

✨✧ PrinceParade ... LP
Paisley Park, 1986. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Prince in a grand groove – really hitting a new level of funk with a razor-sharp edge – and even blowing away some of his work on previous records! The record's a soundtrack for a film – Under The Cherry Moon – and although that movie never had the success of Purple Rain, we actually think it left behind an even stronger musical legacy – one that has Prince finding even more of a funky voice than before, with so many wonderfully freaky twists and turns! The music never got the showcase it might have deserved, because of the failure of the film – but it's one of our favorite Prince albums ever, and includes the massively funky "Kiss", the closest Prince ever got to James Brown, The whole album's got some great sweeping, pop psyche orchestral arrangements by Clare Fischer – and titles include "Christopher Tracey's Parade", "I Wonder U", "Under The Cherry Moon", "Girls & Boys", and "Anotherloverholenyohead". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ PrinceSign O The Times ... CD
Paisley Park/Warner, 1987. Used 2 CDs ... Just Sold Out!
A fantastic record from Prince – a double-length set that came out at a time when the purple one was brimming over with energy and new ideas – and a step slightly in the direction of more socially conscious material! Everything that was great about Prince before the record is completely intact – his amazing ability to create funky grooves, slinky sensuality, and songs that are so catchy, they can win over audiences on both sides of the fence. But there's also some deeper elements here going on too – maybe more space for thoughtful presentation spread out over the 2LPs that comprised the original record – at a level that's only more confirmation of the never-ending genius of prince! Titles include the great title cut "Sign O The Times" – plus "Strange Relationship", "Slow Love", "It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night", "Adore", "Ballad Of Dorothy Parker", "Housequake", "U Got The Look", "If I Was Your Girlfriend", "I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man", "The Cross", "Hot Thing", and "Starfish & Coffee". Sure, the politics seem a bit silly now – but the track's still one of Prince's last really compelling hits. It's got a totally infectious hook, a spare Timmy Thomas-ish beat, and a strangely captivating vocal that really sticks with us! The flip's a bit silly – a 10 minute extended number with a silly jam kind of feel – but it's also a great testament to the freedom that Prince was allowed on his 12" singles – which makes them every bit as essential as his albums. 12-inch, Vinyl record

Reprise, 1987. Sealed Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Rick James makes the move away from Motown here – heading over to Warner/Reprise, in the Prince side of the spectrum – along with a cover image that has him wearing a paisley costume on top of a purple background – in a way that could well make the buyer think that Rick's working with Prince! But despite these Prince-like trappings (which also include some more Purple Rain-ish costumes on the inside cover), Rick's still writing, producing, and arranging himself – hitting a groove that clearly inspired by the success of his Paisley Park competition, but which is also kind of a natural extension of the Rick James funk sound into the end of the 80s. Roxanne Shante and Big Daddy Kane make some guest appearances on the album – and titles include "Loosey's Rap", "Hypnotize", "I Believe In U", "In The Girl's Room", "Sherry Baby", "Love's Fire", "Wonderful", "So Tight", and "Sexual Luv Affair". A pretty sweet soul group from the mid 80s scene – one that's been a bit overlooked over the years, but who have a sound that's right up there with the best of their big name contemporaries! At some points, these guys have a way of harmonizing along with electro funk that reminds us a lot of The Jacksons during the 80s – and we mean that in the best way possible – and other cuts almost seem to borrow a bit of inspiration from the Paisley Park generation, especially in the way there's a nicely chunky vibe to the funk! There's even some occasional electro soul touches – either in the keyboards, or in rare spots in the beats – and the whole thing's the kind of album that's got plenty to offer for any fan of funky 80s soul. Titles include "She's Stacked", "Split Personality", "Reconsider", "Rainy Night", "Head On Collision", "Private Spot", "I Love You So", and "Can't Let Go". CD
