Mose AllisonCreek Bank (Young Man Mose/Creek Bank) ... CD
Prestige/OJC, 1958. Used ... $6.99
Like many other 70s reissues in the Prestige/Milestone/fantasy family, this set compiles 2 early albums by Mose. Unlike a lot of his later material, this set's mostly instrumental, though he does get in some vocals on about a third of the tracks. The album features some great work by Allison's trio of the time – Addison Farmer on bass and Ronnie Free or Nick Stabulas on drums – simple piano-driven groovers, performed with a slight gutbuckety approach, and lots of sweet down home soul. 20 tracks in all, including "Don't Get Around Much Anymore", "How Long Has This Been Going On", "Baby Let Me Hold Your Hand", "Stroll", "I Hadn't Anyone Till You", "Seventh Son", "If You Live", "Mule", "If I Didn't Care", "Moon & Cypress", and "Creek Bank". CD

✨✧ Mose AllisonI Don't Worry About A Thing ... CD
Atlantic/Rhino, 1962. Used ... $6.99
One of Mose Allison's first albums for Atlantic – a great set of soulful jazz vocals, done in a rootsy style that has some slight New Orleans touches – and a nice sort of beat undercurrent! The sound of the set follows nicely from Mose's earlier work for Prestige and Columbia – with Mose on piano, plus Addison Farmer on bass and Osie Johnson on drums. The set features 10 tracks in all – including "I Don't Worry About A Thing", "It Didn't Turn Out That Way", "Your Mind Is On Vacation", "Stand By", "Meet Me At No Special Place" and "The Song Is Ended". CD
(Out of print. Small cutout hole through barcode & booklet, which has a few age spots.)

Prestige, 1957. Very Good+ ... $79.99
An early, rootsy Mose Allison sides, mostly instrumental, bluesy piano trio numbers, but Mose busts out with some vocals on an early version of his signature tune "Parchman Farm" and "Lost Mind", and a spot of trumpet on "Trouble In Mind" . He's joined by Addison Farmer on bass, and Nick Stabulas on drums, and the instrumental sides include "Crepuscular Air", "Mojo Woman", "I'll Never Be Free" and "Ain't You A Mess". Mose AllisonRamblin' With Mose ... CD
Prestige, 1958. Used ... $8.99
A pivotal album for Mose Allison – and one of the first records to ever feature his voice, even if only on one track! During the 50s, Allison was mostly known for his work as a bop-styled pianist – on records by Stan Getz and others – but at the end of the decade, he really returned to his roots, and began to forge a New Orleans-styled approach to jazz that had lots of bluesy inflections and a much earthier sensibility. This album offers a bit of both Allison sides of the fence – some straighter piano jazz with a trio that features Addison Farmer on bass and Ronnie Free on drums, but also some rootsier numbers that come off nicely. Mose sings on "I Got A Right To Cry", and other titles include "Ramble", "Saritha", "Ingenue", "Old Devil Moon", "The Minstrels", "Old Man John", and "The Kissin Bug". CD features 3 bonus alternate takes too! CD

✨✧ Mose AllisonWord From Mose Allison ... LP
Atlantic, 1964. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
The word from Mose is mighty darn hip – served up here in a sweet Atlantic Records session that seems to really hone into all the mod influences his music would have in the 60s! The rootsy quality of Allison's earlier records is still firmly in place – but the group also has a tighter feel that's almost more soul jazz – thanks, in part, to work from Ben Tucker on bass – in a groove that's similar to some of his own contributions to 60s jazz. Titles include a great version of "Foolkiller" – one of Mose's greatest tracks – plus "One Of These Days", "Days Like These", "Your Red Wagon", "Look Here", "I'm Not Talking", and "New Parchman". ✨✧ Mose Allison TrioBack Country Suite ... CD
Prestige (Japan), 1957. Used ... Out Of Stock
A rare early Mose Allison album – a mostly-instrumental outing that focuses on Allison's wonderful talents on the piano – already honed by this time through participation in a number of key sessions with other leaders! Side one of the album features the beautiful "Back Country Suite" – an extended piece of shorter numbers, composed by Allison with a wonderfully evocative feel. The depth of the work is wonderful, and shows that even at an early point, Allison was forging a unique voice in jazz that went far beyond simple work on piano as an accompanist. Other players on the set include bassist Taylor La Fargue and drummer Frank Isola – and side two features the tunes "Blueberry Hill", "I Thought About You", "In Salah", and "One Room Country Shack". Jerry GranelliJerry Granelli Trio Plays Vince Guaraldi & Mose Allison ... CD
Rare Noise (UK), 2020. New Copy ... $14.99 15.98
Drummer Jerry Granelli takes on two of our favorite piano talents of the 60s – working here with a great trio that features Jamie Saft on the acoustic keys and Bradley Christopher Jones on bass – all three working together on nicely different takes on the material! If you know both Mose and Vince, you'll know the sorts of material that you'll find within – lyrical and groovy Guaraldi tunes, and soul-drenched Allison numbers – but the approach of the combo is nicely different, and Saft does an especially nice job of making the tracks swing while also bringing plenty of his unique flavorings into play – maybe given a bit more of a groove than we might have expected, thanks to very strong work from Jones on bass. Titles include "Cast Your Fate To The Wind", "Star Song", "Young Man Blues", "Everybody's Cryin Mercy", "Parchman Farm", "Your Mind Is On Vacation", and "Christmas Time Is Here". CD

✨✧ VariousIf You're Going To The City – A Tribute To Mose Allison (CD & DVD) ... CD
Fat Possum, 2019. New Copy CD & DVD ... Out Of Stock
We're not usually the sorts to dig tribute albums, but the mighty Mose Allison is one of our favorite talents from years back – and the lineup here do a great job of reviving some of the classic spirit of Mose, while also pushing things forward with their own creative reinterpretations of his legacy! If you don't know Allison, he was a jazz pianist first, and a singer second – the latter the quality that brought him great fame, with lots of New Orleans-inflected qualities in his vocals, and lyrics that had a nicely biting mix of contemporary wit and more vintage themes. That legacy has held up wonderfully over the years – and is interpreted here by a host of different artists – a lineup that includes "If You're Going To The City" by Iggy Pop, "Your Mind Is On Vacation" by Taj Mahal, "My Brain" by Robbie Fulks, "If You Life" by Jackson Browne, "Parchman Farm" by Richard Thompson, "Ever Since The World Ended" by Loudon Wainwright III, "Stop This World" by Chrissie Hynde, "Numbers On Paper" by Frank Black, and "Monsters Of The Id" by Amy Allison with Elvis Costello. Includes bonus DVD of the film – Mose Allison Ever Since I Stole The Blues. CD

Charles BrownBlues 'N' Brown ... CD
Jewel/Paula, Early 70s. Used ... $5.99
By this point in his career, Charles has come a long way from his "Drifting Blues" hit of earlier years – but he's still one heck of a singer, and in a modern soul/blues format like this, it's interesting to hear him sound like singers like Mose Allison, on whom he had an undeniable effect. The group's a small combo with some wah wah and fuzzy guitar, and Charles is probably the one playing piano. Titles include "Jilted", "Black Night", "Trouble Blues", "For You", and "Moonlight & Shadows". CD

Al Cohn QuintetAl Cohn Quintet Featuring Bob Brookmeyer ... LP
Coral, 1956. Very Good+ ... $24.99
A rare and unusual chapter in the career of Al Cohn – and an incredible set cut in the mid 50s with Bob Brookmeyer on trombone! The style's a bit like that used by Al and Zoot Sims together – tightly arranged shorter tracks, with a focus on well-crafted horn work, but enough space to allow each of the leaders break out and express their personality on the record. The rest of the group features Mose Allison on piano, Teddy Kotick on bass, and Nick Stabulas on drums – and the arrangements are all pretty darn fresh, handled by Al and Bob themselves. Titles include "So Far So Good", "Winter", "Back To Back", "Shine", "Good Spirits", and "Lazy Man Stomp". LP, Vinyl record album

Georgie FameShorty ... LP
Epic, Late 60s. Near Mint- ... $6.99
An excellent little album from British vocalist Georgie Fame – one that has him moving way past the simple beat group sound of his roots, into a sophisticated style that mixes jazz vocalizing, hard grooving, and lots of rock/R&B influences! Georgie's still got his Mose Allison-inspired vocal style, but the band behind him is a lot more open-ended, and grooves along freely in these great organ riffing rhythms – open-ended and very swinging on some numbers, but in a way that's different from Fame's rougher-edged roots. Titles include "Oliver's Gone", "Somebody Stole My Thunder", "Fully Booked", "Inside Story", and "Seventh Son". LP, Vinyl record album

Georgie FameTwo Faces Of Fame – The Complete 1967 Recordings (stereo/mono – with bonus tracks) ... CD
CBS/RPM (UK), 1967. New Copy 2CD ... $8.99 16.99
The two faces of Fame are live and studio – as each side of the original album was recorded in each mode – and this great CD version goes a lot further, with stereo and mono mixes and a huge number of bonus tracks! The live numbers feature the Brit jazz vocalist swinging in a set recorded in early 1967 – done with lots of Hammond organ in the lineup, and an overall style that picks up a lot from Ray Charles and Mose Allison, but filters it through the groovier beat group styles of 60s London. The studio numbers are even better, and feature Georgie singing in more of a jazz-based mode – with lineups that feature some striking players that include Tony Oxley, Peter King, Gordon Beck, and Tubby Hayes. Tracks include a wonderful take on Mongo Santamaria's "El Pussycat", plus the tunes "Do It The Hard Way", "It Could Happen To You", "C'Est La Vie", "River's Invitation", "Greenback Dollar Bill", and "Keep Your Big Mouth Shut". Disc 1 also features 13 bonus tracks from singles and EPs released in 1967 – and disc 2 is completed by 11 MORE bonus tracks – 6 released for the first time ever, including "Jumpin The Gun", "Respoken", "Fool's Paradise" and "Conquistador". CBS/BGO (UK), 1967/1968. New Copy ... $8.99 14.98
2 classic albums from British vocalist Georgie Fame – back to back on one CD! First up are Two Faces Of Fame – live and studio – as each side of the album was recorded in each mode! Side one features the Brit jazz vocalist swinging in a live set recorded in early 1967 – done with lots of Hammond organ in the lineup, and an overall style that picks up a lot from Ray Charles and Mose Allison, but filters it through the groovier beat group styles of 60s London. Third Face Of Fame is an even better album – one that has Fame moving past the swinging Mose Allison-inspired jazz vocal mode of earlier records, into a groovier style that picks up a range of different sounds! Georgie kicks off the album with his version of the ever-popular late 60s "Ballad Of Bonnie & Clyde" – and seems to use that tune as an excuse to explore a nice range of older jazz vocal approaches, including one tune that even has him reciting the lyrics in a Beatles-sounding monologue! Arrangements are by Harry South, with players that include Gordon Beck, John McLaughlin, Ronnie Scott, Tony Coe, and Ian Hammer – and titles include "Ballad Of Bonnie & Clyde", "Ask Me Nice", "When I'm Sixty Four", "Someone To Watch Over Me", "Blue Prelude", "Bullets Laverne", "This Is Always", "Mellow Yellow", and "Side By Side". Savoy BrownRaw Sienna ... LP
Parrot/London, Early 70s. Very Good Gatefold ... $11.99
A fantastic classic from Savoy Brown – one of those records that shows just why these guys were so great during their short early run! The approach is maybe familiar blues rock, but the sound is also very special – with a great sense of fusion of all the elements, so that vocals, guitar, and rhythms all seem tightly tied together – still with the kind of bravado you might expect, and plenty of strong guitar from Kim Simmonds – but also given this focus that's really wonderful, especially when heavy piano lines come into the mix to almost give things a Mose Allison vibe, and added horns open up some currents of soul. A strong cut above the competition – with titles that include "Master Hare", "Needle & Spoon", "A Hard Way To Go", "That Same Feelin", "A Little More Wine", "I'm Crying", "Is That So", and "Stay While The Night Is Young". Tight funky jazz from vocalist Ben Sidran – still very much in his best early mode, and playing with a really raw sound overall! Ben's vocals are in that down-home Mose Allison mode, but the real charm is the music – which features funky drums by Clyde Stubblefield, the man responsible for the legendary break on James Brown's "Funky Drummer" – plus great playing by Chicago talents Sonny Seals on tenor, Bunky Green on alto, and Phil Upchurch on bass. Ben's piano is pretty great too – especially on the funky tracks – as it comes across with a hard left side sort of sound that really makes for a wonderful groove! Reprise/Real Gone, 1973. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $25.99 26.99
A really wonderful little record – by a group who should have been much bigger than they were! Despite the fact that these guys are an obscure rock band with a silly name, the record's a perfect example of the subtly soulful work that was coming out of various west coast sources during the 70s – the kind of album-oriented work that yielded gems for play on underground FM radio, but which has been mostly lost to the shifting sands of time, save for some well-placed rescue in the reissue scene. The gem on this one is the smooth stepper "Fazon", but the album's got a few other nice ones too, with a jazzy tinge that's almost in debt to Mose Allison or Ben Sidran – that kind of cool blend of many elements with younger ideas that was bubbling up on the Bay Area scene. Titles include "Dancin Wizard", "Monkeys On the Moon", "Sneaky Smith", and "Astronaut Food". LP, Vinyl record album

Kent (UK), Late 60s. Used ... $8.99
We really love all the different volumes in the Mod Jazz series from Kent Records – they've been instrumental to our musical education over the years – so we're always happy to have "Mo", especially with a collection this great! The material comes from a number of different indies from the 60s – and the style here is definitely mod, in that hip mix of R&B, soul, and jazz that was brewing on the London scene back in the day – but which was always best delivered by American artists like this! The music bristles with heavy tenor, Hammond organ, scratchy guitar, and the occasional well-belted vocal – and the whole thing feels like finding a jukebox full of carefully-selected 45s in some lost southside tavern. 22 tracks in all – including "Smokey Joe's La La" by Googie Rene, "Blue Vibes" by Johnny Lytle, "Cholo" by Brown Brothers of Soul, "Soul Jam" by Booker T & The MGs, "Money" by Freddie Roach, "Mission Impossible" by Johnny Gilliam, "Spider Man" by Freddie McCoy, "You Win I Lose" by Little Johnny Taylor, "You Can't Sit Down" by Chris Colombo, "Eyesight To The Blind" by Mose Allison, "My Train" by Merl Saunders, "Brother Ray" by Willis Jackson, and "Right On" by Boogaloo Joe Jones.
