VariousSassafras & Moonshine – The Songs Of Laura Nyro ... CD
Ace (UK), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
A great tribute to the songwriting skills of Laura Nyro – presented here in a package that features key covers from some of Nyro's contemporaries, and which also includes a surprising amount of soul music too! Laura's one of those key 60s talents who started writing for others, then got the chance to spread her wings on her own – and while her own recordings have really continued to reach new audiences over the decades, it's great to have a package like this to remind us of Nyro's songwriting roots! The set's mostly heavy on material from the late 60s and early 70s – with a fair bit of female soul tunes in the mix – and it also includes a few more contemporary numbers that come as a nice surprise. Like others in Ace's "songwriter" series, the production and packaging is great – and titles include "Stoney End" by The Blossoms, "Time & Love" by The Supremes, "Wedding Bell Blues" by Bobby Gentry, "Captain St Lucifer" by Melba Moore, "Save The Country" by Thelma Houston, "Lazy Susan" by Liane Carroll, "He's A Runner" by Mama Cass, "Buy & Sell" by Nnena Freelon, "Lonely Women" by Linda Hoyle, "Eli's Coming" by Friends Of Distinction, and "Stoned Soul Picnic" by Staple Singers. Dear Mr TimeGrandfather – The Dear Mr Time Anthology (Grandfather/Brotosaurs & Bling/Time/bonus tracks) (3CD set) ... CD
Grapefruit (UK), 1971/2021. New Copy 3CD ... $26.99 30.99
A lost legacy of a very obscure psychedelic group – the mysterious Mr Time, who cut one classic album for Square Records at the start of the 70s – then disappeared for years, before reforming more recently, and giving the world some more wonderful music! The set begins with the group's classic album Grandfather – a pure gem that really matches some of the most creatively produced work of the period – hard rock echoes at times, but maybe a late psych sort of mix of fuzz and more sophisticated ideas – served up on these really beautiful tunes that come together to make a unified theme for the entire record! The album's billed as a comment on the life of one man from his birth at the start of the 20th Century to the time of his death – with titles that include "Light Up A Light", "On A Lonely Night", "Years & Fortunes", "A Dawning Moonshine", "Your Country Needs You", and "Make Your Peace". The set also features 13 more bonus tracks around the same time – demos recorded before the album, with lots of different songs – then the whole thing goes on to features the full albums Brontosaurs & Bling, and Time – both recorded by the reformed group from 2015 onward. There's more bonus material too – the box is a massive 65 tracks in all – and the whole thing comes with a big booklet of notes. CD

✨✧ New Vaudeville BandWinchester Cathedral (plus Finchley Cathedral & bonus tracks) ... CD
Fontana/RPM (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The near-complete works of the legendary New Vaudeville Band – a campy 60s combo with a real old-timey feel! The approach of the group is a bit like the 20s fantasy carried on by Harper's Bizarre over at Warner Brothers in the late 60s – but unlike Harper's, the New Vaudeville Band had a sound that was perhaps even more in the mode of the older music they sought to emulate – although still with a few key groovy elements in place! The style's best summed up by their hit "Winchester Cathedral – a mix of acoustic swing, trad jazz instrumentation, and campy crooning recorded in a flattened way that makes the music sound like it's coming off an old record. The surprising thing, though, is how far the group are able to actually take the style – way past the familiar hit, and into a range of original tunes and covers that all serve up a off-beat British version of the 20s – almost like an audio version of a Monty Python sketch. CD features all the tracks from the albums Winchester Cathedral and its follow-up Finchley Cathedral – plus some rare demos, and even an old Coke commercial. 33 tracks in all, plus full notes on the group – and titles that include "Tap Your Feet", "Whispering", "I Can't Go Wrong", "Whatever Happened To Phyllis Puke", "Sadie Moonshine", "So Tired", "If I Had A Talking Picture Of You", "Peek A Boo", "Shirl", "Lovely Women", "Green Street Green", "Holiday Inn", and of course, "Winchester Cathedral". ✨✧ VariousThink I'm Going Weird – Original Artefacts From The British Psychedelic Scene 1966 to 1968 (5CD set) ... CD
Grapefruit (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 5CD ... Out Of Stock
Nothing weird here, just wonderful – a fantastic assortment of music from a time when the British scene was really changing things up – served up in a book-styled package with notes that are as dynamic as its music! The tracks here move way past the obvious – that's an image of John Lennon on the cover, but these aren't the tracks by The Beatles and bigger acts of the time – and instead, the collection really does a great job of digging around all the really wonderful groups that were recording for the bigger British labels of the period, but who were given a lot of freedom to really try out new ideas – both in their music, and in the way the music was recorded. The package is the best we've ever seen to present this slice of English rock – and the set features 122 titles on 5CDs – with work from Ron Geesin, Atlanta Roots, Simon Dupree, The Smoke, John's Children, Ivor Cutler, Tinsel Arcade, The Soft Machine, Canto, New Generation, Medium Rare, 117 Venusian Moonshine, Friday's Chyld, New Generation, Third Ear Band, Wimple Winch, The Deviants, Sorrows, Rupert's People, Orange Bicycle, Shuster, Felius Andromeda, Tomorrow, Crystal Ship, The Moles, and many others – and the set also features 9 never-issued tracks!
