Maria BethaniaCiclo ... LP
Philips (Brazil), 1983. Very Good+ ... $24.99
A nicely rootsy little album from Maria Bethania – recorded during a period when some of her music could often sound much fuller and more electric! The album's got subtle help from Toninho Horta, Dori Caymmi, and Guto Graca Mello – all of whom arrange Maria's vocals in a sophisticated singer/songwriter sort of mode – very personal, often spare, and used with a sensitivity to the lyrics that's really wonderful. The Terra Trio also play on the record, and titles include "Ciclo", "Filosofia Pura", "Motriz", "Vinho", "Lua", "Cantar Pra Fazer O Sol Adormecer", and "Rio De Janeiro". LP, Vinyl record album

Maria BethaniaMangueira – A Menina Dos Meus Olhos ... CD
Quitanda (Brazil), 2020. New Copy ... $19.99
Brilliant work from the legendary Maria Bethania – a singer who might be looking a few years older on the cover, but who still has all the tremendous power of her youth! Maria's vocals are tremendous, and set up in these beautiful arrangements that blend samba-styled percussion and guitar with some occasional fuller orchestrations – but always in a way that's very understated, so that the lady herself is right up front in the lead – almost never needing the other instrumentation at all, since her presence is more than enough to hold us rapt. Arrangements are by Letieres Leite, and the set features guest appearances from Caetano and Moreno Veloso – on titles that include "A Mangueira E La No ceu", "A Flor E O Espinho/Sombras Da Agua", "Luz Negra", "Sei La Mangueira", "Maria Bethania A Menina Dos Olhos De Oya", and "Historias Pra Ninar Gente Grande". ✨✧ Maria BethaniaSoul Of Brazil – The Definitive Collection ... CD
Wrasse (UK), 1970s/1980s. Used ... $9.99
A nicely done collection of Maria's classic 70s MPB work – with a few nice tracks from later years as well! The set features 22 tracks in all – plus a good set of notes that not only tells Maria's story in relation to the career of her brother Caetano Veloso, but to the political changes in Brazil as well. The set's a great way to dip into Maria's extremely rich body of recordings from the time, and features tracks that include "Ronda", "Loucura", "Sonho Meu", "Grito De Alerta", "Alibi", "Um Jeito Estupido De Te Amar", "Mel", "Cheiro De Amor", and "Negue". Chico Buarque/Nara Leao/Maria BethaniaQuando O Carnaval Chegar ... CD
Universal (Brazil), 1972. Used ... $16.99
A fantastic soundtrack recorded in the immediate post-Tropicalia years – featuring some of the best early 70s work by Chico Buarque, Nara Leao, Maria Bethania, and others! The cover has a mad image with Buarque, Leao, and Bethania in top hats and shiny uniforms – and the music follows up with a similarly lively spirit – samba-esque, with other touches of rock and jazz production that give the work an expansive and trippy feel. Roberto Menescal handled the arrangements – and titles include "Cacada" by Chico Buarque, "Mais Uma Estrela" by Nara Leao, "Soneto" by Orquesta De Cordas, "Soneto" by Nara Leao, "Partido Alto" by MPB-4, "Formosa" by Nara Leao & Maria Bethania, "Baioque" by Maria Bethania, and "Cantores De Radio" by Chico, Naria, and Maria together! ✨✧ Maria Rita (Maria Rita Stumpf)Brasileira ... LP
Selva (Brazil), 1988. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Not the same Maria Rita that rose to international fame in the past decade or so – but an earlier, much more obscure singer with a nicely rootsy vibe – one whose presence in the Brazilian music scene is maybe more welcome to our ears than her famous later namesake! The album came out at the end of the 80s, but has a sound that feels more like the experimental generation of MPB in the 70s – some moments that have the brashness of Gal Costa around her India album, other moments of gentleness that recall the sensitive soul of Joyce, and maybe a few slight touches of the deeper drama of Maria Bethania – and yet, like all of those artists, this Maria Rita is very much her own person – as can easily be heard by the lack of pop production or commercial efforts on this very unique album. Titles include "Cantico Brasileiro No 1", "Cancao Da Gaora", "Lamento Africano/Rictus", "A Cidade", "Melodia De Veludo", and "Trilhas". LP, Vinyl record album

Joao GilbertoAmoroso/Brasil ... CD
Warner, 1977/1981. Used ... $4.99
A collection of two albums that Joao Gilberto did for Warner Brothers in the late 70s/early 80s. Amoroso is some pretty sweet stuff from Joao Gilberto – featuring a core jazz combo playing along with a larger set of arrangements, in a manner that's similar to some of Jobim's work from the 70s. The album features a nice vocal version of Jobim's "Wave" and "Zingaro", plus the tracks "Estate", "Tin Tin Por Tin Tin", and "Besame Mucho". On Brasil, Joao Gilberto meets the younger generation of Brazilian vocalists – Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, and Maria Bethania – and the four of them lay down some nice jazzy stuff, with all the vocals weaving in and out. Tracks are nice and long, and titles include "Cordeiro De Nana", "Aquarela Do Brasil", "Milagre", and "Bahia Com H". Johnny Mandel conducted, and Joao produced. CD

Elis ReginaFalso Brilhante ... LP
Philips (Brazil), 1976. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $24.99
One of the most diverse albums that Elis Regina cut during the 70s – a set that seems to leap from style to style with each new track, and really build from some of the more staid and jazz-based styles of her other records! Cesar Camargo Mariano is still in charge of arrangements here, but the overall sound is relatively different – mellow one minute, rockish the next, cast in stark piano after that, and always moving onward with the sort of variety we might expect from Gal Costa or Maria Bethania at this point. Some cuts are tinged with Latin and South American instrumentation, while others more guitar and electric keyboards – and highlights of the album include versions of two Joao Bosco songs "O Cavaleiro E Os Monihos" and "Jardins De Infancia", which has a beautiful soaring electric feel to it, and is a real groover along the lines of the tracks you might find on Blue Brazil. Other titles include "Tatuagem", "Como Nossos Pais", "Velha Roupa Colorida", "Los Hermanos", and "Um Por Todos". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Caetano VelosoCaetano Veloso (1971) (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Polygram/Elemental (Spain), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of the greatest albums ever from Caetano Veloso – a rare all-English language set, recorded in London during the years of his exile! The post-Tropicalia set is a fair bit different than any other Veloso album we can think of – not just because of the English language, but also because the approach is somewhat gentle, and almost folksy at times – a real change from his experimental modes of the late 60s, and easily his most personal statement to date. The tunes are incredibly beautiful – filled with themes of loss and longing that no doubt come from his separation from Brazil – and although a few tunes feature light strings from Phil Ryan, most of the backings are relatively light, and almost acoustic. Titles include the classics "Shoot Me Dead", "If You Hold a Stone", "Maria Bethania", "In The Hot Sun Of A Christmas Day", and "London, London" – plus a cover of "Asa Branca". LP, Vinyl record album
(Limited edition.)
