Amel LarrieuxLovely Standards ... CD
Bliss Life, 2007. Used ... $8.99
A real shift in style for Amel Larrieux – but a great one too! As hinted at in the title, the tracks here are all standards from the American songbook of the 20th century – older tunes made famous many years back, but given new life and a new sense of soul through Amel's wonderful performance! The setting is relatively spare and intimate – mostly just piano, bass, and drums, plus a bit of acoustic guitar – and although the sound is somewhat jazzy, there's still enough qualities here that will make the album appealing to fans of Larrieux's older work. Titles include "You're My Thrill", "Shadow Of Your Smile", "Wild Is The Wind", "If I Were A Bell", "Try Your Wings", "I Like The Sunrise", and "If I Loved You". CD

David ShireFarewell My Lovely ... LP
United Artists, 1975. Near Mint- ... $7.99
Farewell My Lovely is a great late Robert Mitchum film – kind of a 70s noir, featuring Mitchum as Philip Marlowe – and the music is kind of a reworking of an older style of dramatic crime soundtrack styles, with the additional of some more off-beat and edgey passages that create a more sinister feel. The score's actually got some nice jazz work by players that include Dick Nash, Don Menza, and Artie Kane – and features 12 titles that include "Mrs Grayle's Theme", "Amthor's Place", "Marlowe's Trip", "Three Mile Limited", and "Moose Finds His Velma". Robert AshleyPrivate Parts ... LP
Lovely, 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99
One of the most important records from composer Robert Ashley – and one that's got a compact approach that helped it circulate a lot more than some of Ashley's larger operas! This piece is very much like those – with Ashley's unique spoken approach – part poetry, part performance art – but the sound is more stripped-down, and in the spirit of the young downtown New York generation of Laurie Anderson and Phillip Glass – served up with great instrumental help from contemporary Blue Gene Tyranny, who plays piano, moog, and clavinet – with some additional tablas for accompaniment! The whole thing was recorded at the important Center For Contemporary Music on the west coast, at Mills College – and is almost a Bay Area answer to some of the more compelling art records from the New York scene. The record is divided into 2 parts – "The Park" and "The Backyard" – both filled with a hypnotic mix of voice, keyboards, and tablas! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ David BehrmanOn The Other Ocean (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Lovely, 1977. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Completely sublime work from electronic genius David Behrman – one of his late 70s classics for Lovely Records, and maybe the most beautiful of the bunch! Behrman's a really unique figure that always seems to have his own very special place in music – not nearly as noisy as some of the electronic musicians of the previous generation, often with this sense of flow and cycle that seems to be inspired by the minimalists before him, especially Terry Riley – but always able to create sounds that have a wonderfully organic, planet-pulsing vibe – yet never without any of the cliches of the new age generation to come! Phew – that's saying a lot, and promising a lot – but it's completely true with Berhman at his best, which is definitely the case here. Side one features the long, flowing "On The Other Ocean" – with Behrman on electronics, Maggi Payne on flute, and Arthur Stidole on bassoon – while the Kim-1 computer provides harmonic responses. On "Figure In A Clearing", Behrman works with David Gibson on cello – while Kim-1 adds in these beautiful harmonic changes that really transform the sound and spirit throughout. ✨✧ Meredith MonkKey ... CD
Lovely, 1971. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Haunting early work by Meredith Monk – recorded in 1971, and performed by a small group of vocalists – all working with Monk in an incredible presentation of her new ideas for voice! The music is already at a place that's light years ahead of most – clearly marking the singer as one of the most visionary artists of her generation – as important as Philip Glass or Steve Reich – even though the more personal presentation of Monk's music never got her into the concert hall repertoire as much as her contemporaries. Meredith plays electric organ, jews harp, and sings – and the piece is one long work that covers the entire album. CD

Enrique RodriguezLo Que Es (red vinyl pressing) ... LP
Extra Lovely, 2019. New Copy ... $19.99 20.00
A really beautiful record by young Chilean pianist Enrique Rodriguez – a set that's got little more going on than piano and keyboards, but which really makes the most of those elements! Rodriguez plays in a style that's not entirely jazz – maybe more moody instrumentals with a slight bit of rhythm in the background, but always at a gentle pace – so that the tunes have a flow that's really driven by the keys, which sound equally great, whether acoustic or electric! Some tunes glow with a soundtrack theme style, others have a deeper soul vibe – and titles include "Chao", "Estamos Bien Aqui", "Una Pared", "Mantener El Arriba", "Ambos", "Lograr Decidirnos", "Lo Que Somos", and "Ni Siquiera Se Si Quiero Encontrarte". Blue Gene TyrannyOut Of The Blue ... CD
Lovely/Unseen Worlds, 1977. New Copy ... $10.99 14.99
A compelling first album from avant composer Blue Gene Tyranny – one of the first efforts from the excellent art label Lovely Music, and a wonderful example of the left-field experimentation going on away from the punk and more familiar scenes of the time! The first half of the record is an attempt to open up more conventional pop – but from our later perspective, the results sound a bit more like more creative work of the mainstream – although definitely with a more offbeat feel, particularly on the one instrumental jamming number. But the real standout here is the side-long track "A Letter From Home" – done for a narrator and "sampling chorus" – a really cool piece that sets the scene for Laurie Anderson, Giorno Poetry Systems, and all the other great art records that we remember so fondly from the 80s! This piece alone is worth the price of the record – but you also get the shorter cuts "For David K", "Leading A Double Life", and "Next Time Might Be Your Time". CD

Brunswick/Edsel (UK), Early 70s. Used ... $13.99
As with any soul artist of her era, Barbara Acklin recorded most of her best work on 7" singles. This tasty 25 track set feature 13 rare singles – both a and b-sides full intact (two singles share the same b sides, so the set's only got 25 cuts instead of 26). A number of these cuts are on LPs, but there's a number of other ones that aren't – and Barbara's lovely voice makes all tracks a great treat anyway! ✨✧ AirtoLatino – Aqui Se Puede ... LP
Sobocode (Puerto Rico), 1984. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An overlooked gem from Airto – recorded after his 70s years on bigger labels, but a set that almost tops all of them in the end! There's a wonderful mix going on here – a blend of rootsy and electric, and Latin and Brazilian – the former clearly from the placement of the record on New York's Montuno label – an imprint that did plenty of great sessions filled with Latin jazz! The shift makes for a fresh one for Airto – still plenty of room to show off his famous percussion impulses, yet in a slightly different way – often grooving in a Latin fusion mode that's a nice maturation from the CTI years. The set's filled with all-star players – including Jorge Dalto on electric piano, Raul De Souza on trombone, Joe Farrell on flute, Alphonso Johnson on bass, and Oscar Castro Neves on keyboards, guitar, and cavaquinho – and the lovely Flora's also on board to sing a bit on the set. Titles include the extended jammer "Tombo", plus "Aqui Se Pede", "Jump", "The Return", "Sin Salida", and "Anatelio". LP, Vinyl record album

Harry Allen with JoyceSomething About Jobim ... CD
Stunt (Denmark), 2015. New Copy ... $15.99 18.99
A lovely little Brazilian-styled set from tenorist Harry Allen – and one that features vocals and guitar from the wonderful Joyce! Almost all titles are originals by Antonio Carlos Jobim – as you'd guess from the title – but Allen's deep-voiced approach moves them into very different territory than the usual bossa remakes – and reminds us just how great Jobim's compositions can be as vehicles for jazz improvisation. In addition to guitar from Joyce, the rest of the quintet features Helio Alves on piano, Rodolfo Stroeter on bass, and Tutty Moreno on drums – who further underscore the Brazilian elements – and Joyce sings on three of the album's eleven tracks, always adding a lot when she does! Titles include "Captain Bacardi", "Chovendo Na Roseira", "Theme For Jobim", "Angela", "Voce Vai Ver", "Tema Jazz", "Mojave", and "Antigua". CD

Gene AmmonsSoulful Moods Of Gene Ammons ... LP
Moodsville, Early 60s. Very Good ... $24.99
Beautiful beautiful work from tenorist Gene Ammons – and an album that really demonstrates that during the 60s, one of Ammons' strongest suits was his work with a mellow tune or ballad! The tracks here are wonderfully laidback, but never sleepy – very soulful, and solidly put together in that Ammons-made gentle-blown way – using just a few notes to send the message out with a powerful punch, without ever overdoing things the way that a few of his tenor contemporaries might be tempted to do! The group's a great fit too – with the lovely Patti Brown on piano, plus bass from George Duvivier and bass from Ed Shaughnessy – and titles include "Two Different Worlds", "Skylark", "Three Little Words", "Street Of Dreams", and "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To". ✨✧ Marisa AndersonMercury ... LP
Mississippi, 2013. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Lovely instrumental work from Marisa Anderson – guitar sounds both acoustic and electric, played in a style that's certainly folksy – but often a bit less traditional than you might expect! There's these cool darker tones around the edges here – a quality that maybe starts with John Fahey, but also echoes some of the more simply expressive solo guitar work of the post-punk generation – especially on the electrified numbers that let the fuzz ring out around the edges, and really help the tunes take shape. The album's quite unique, and very different than most of the contemporary guitar underground – and titles include "The New Country", "Sinks & Rises", "Galax", "Red Sky", "Embudo", "Trinity", "Mojave", and "Furnace Creek". ✨✧ AntenaCamino Del Sol ... LP
Numero, Early 80s. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Bebel Gilberto eat your heart out – Antena explored the same electric-bossa territory you did, nearly 20 years before your first big record! The group were a short-lived French outfit who were one of the shining jewels in the crown of the lovely label Les Disques Du Crepuscule during the early 80s – and were a real breath of fresh air in the post-punk years with their light and jazzy approach to the groove. As you'll hear in this set, Antena's style borrows a lot from the bossa, but also throws in some wonderful poppish touches – including jangly guitars recorded in a similar mode to some of the other French/European indie groups of the time, and a slight darkness in production that almost gives a Martin Hannett-like undercurrent to the whole set. The group's album Camino Del Sol has been lovingly reissued with a great set of notes, as well as a series of bonus tracks from an additional ep – making for a beautiful 14 track package that will really help you rediscover this nearly-lost group! Titles include "Sissexa", "To Climb The Cliff", "Camino Del Sol", "Bye Bye Papaye", "Noelle A Hawaii", "The Boy From Ipanema", "Seaside Weekend", "Frantz", and "Ingenuous". LP, Vinyl record album

An incredible side chapter of the enigmatic Source Family – the ethereal singer Aquariana – an artist with a voice as lovely as her name! Some tunes are spare and simple – with just a bit of piano and this fragile little voice – while others are a bit more righteous, with Aquariana singing like some of the best underground folk artists of the time – but even more expressively, and with a range that's really mindblowing. Tunes are often quite narrative in structure, and some of the more pointed numbers have this personal appeal that almost feels like the best material from the big singer/songwriter generation – had it received fuller arrangements and production. Limited LP issue features all these lost gems, and some nice notes on the lady too – and titles include "One Love", "Forget About The Past", "Ancient One", "Rise Oh Mighty Soul", "Awaken Us", "Come Forth", "Walking Together", and "Oh My Love". ✨✧ Art Ensemble Of ChicagoArt Ensemble Of Chicago With Fontella Bass (original pressing) ... LP
America (France), 1972. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
One of a few wonderful albums recorded by the Art Ensemble of Chicago with singer Fontella Bass – a vocalist who's best known to the world for her 60s soul hits, but who's coming out here as a tremendous force in modern jazz! Fontella's sound here is miles away from that of her work for Chess – deeply organic, and with chanted qualities that one would have never expected in earlier years. The track "How Strange/Ole Jed" builds with a sound that's similar to other Art Ensemble work in Paris – but has more than enough space for some lovely chants and vocalizations from Bass. "Horn Web" follows with a more driven, percussive approach – offering a tremendous showcase for Don Moye's work on drums at the start, then moving into more contemplative space to be explored by the entire group. ✨✧ Ashford & SimpsonGimme Something Real (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Warner/Big Break (UK), 1973. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of our favorite albums from this legendary duo – Nick Ashford & Valerie Simpson's first album for Warner Brothers, and compared to the numbers moved by biggest hits, you could call this one a hidden gem – filled with near perfect mellow soul jams and more sweetly soaring groovers alike! There are moments that steer it into more of a rootsy style, kind of an intimate take on the LA soul sound with easy going, elegant backings and production that's nicely tailored to voices, particular Valerie's lovely vocals – but those lead to bigger emotional payoff that hit you deep! This is an underappreciated early effort from the duo as a headlining act, and finds them setting up to change the sound of R&B to come! Titles include "Can You Make It Brother", "Bend Me", "Gimme Something Real", "I'm Determined", "I Need Your Light", "Anywhere", and "Have You Ever Tried It". As usual, Blaze are far more soulful than most of their contemporaries – and in this set, they've gone way past the usual batch of dancefloor tunes, to create a richly varied set of tracks that sparkles like a classic soul album! Titles include "Time For Love", "The Grooves", "Better Days", "Afro Groove", "Lovely Ones", "Revolution Poem", and "Elevation". CD

ECM, 1973. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Beautiful solo piano work from Paul Bley – spare, stark, and almost lovely – and a real contrast to some of his more aggressive experiments of the late 60s. The Bley here has almost a hint of sadness and longing, especially on the numbers that have him revisiting tunes he'd done on earlier records with an approach that was a bit stronger. It's hard to define the gentle charm that he brings here to "Ida Lupino", "Closer", "Harlem", "Seven", "Open To Love", and "Nothing Ever Was Anyway" – but one listen to the record, and its gorgeous recording of Bley's piano, should be enough! A groovy bossa gem from the glory days of A&M Records – an ultra-hip group recorded with production by Sergio Mendes! The feel here is a lot like that of Brasil 66 – bossa rhythms, sunny CA instrumentation, and lovely female vocals – in this case sung singularly, by the lovely Gracinha Leporace – aka Mrs Mendes! Instrumentation is arguably even better than on Brasil 66 records – with wonderfully groovy organ lines from Manfredo Fest, who plays Lowrey organ instead of the usual Hammond. A really essential slice of bossa nova – and a record we'd never part with! Filled with wonderful tunes that include "Gentle Rain", "Up Up & Away", "Wave", "Do You Know The Way To San Jose", "Cacao do Sal", "Veleiro", "Saiupa", and "Nana". CD

A beautiful album of spare spiritual tracks that's probably one of Lester Bowie's best records away from the Art Ensemble! The record was recorded in Rome in 1976 for the rare Horo label, and it features Arthur Blythe on alto, Malachi Favors on bass, Philip Wilson on drums, and Amina Claudine Myers on piano, organ, and some occasional (and lovely) vocals. Tracks are long, and titles include "For Fela", "Amina", "Tricky Slicky", and "Captain Courageous". Soulful fusion from The Brecker Brothers – a set that's one of their standout efforts from the 70s – and a record that went onto influence a whole generation of jazz musicians too! The album features the twin horns of Randy & Michael Brecker, along with alto by David Sanborn, keyboards by Don Grolnick, and guitar by Steve Khan – but one of the things that really makes the album great is the vocal arrangements, which were handled by Luther Vandross, who also sings on the album along with Patti Austin! The set's got a great soulful feel – with some wonderful mellow groovers that have a sweet 70s sound – titles that include "Lovely Lady", "Night Flight", "Slick Stuff", "What A Miracle Can Do", "I Love Wastin Time With You", "Keep It Steady", "Grease Piece", and "Dig A Little Deeper". A rare treasure from that time when experimental music was sometimes getting lost in the shuffle next to new age records in the racks – partly because an album like this was only ever issued on cassette, which kept it away from some of the more serious sides of the record stores! Side one of the record features the really lovely title track – "The Space Between" – a cut that features piano contributions from Bill Maraldo, who was also at Mills College with Joanna Brouk – the latter of whom works this spare sonic magic that really transforms the acoustic keys in a great way! Side two features three shorter numbers, all very cool – with moog, saron, and electric piano from Brouk – on titles "Chimes & Bells", "Winter Chimes", and "Golden Cloud Layers". One of the two beautifully sweet albums of soul that the lovely Sheree Brown cut for Capitol in the early 80s. This one has less of a smooth jazzy sound than her first one, but it compensates by adding some tracks in a nice 80s groove mode – pushing the sound a bit further than before. Sheree still sings lead with her fragile Minnie Riperton-esque voice, and she also plays a fair bit of acoustic guitar on the LP – and the LP features guest work by Syreeta, Stevie Wonder, and Patrice Rushen, all a perfect fit for Sheree's lightly jazzy style. Beautiful later work by the Dave Brubeck Quartet – an overlooked gem from their 60s Columbia sessions, and an album that features interpretations of tunes written by the great Matt Dennis! Dennis had a way with a tune that often put dark corners in the back of lovely melodies – and this subtle sense of emotion is a perfect foil for the understated talents of Paul Desmond's alto work on the set. Brubeck himself is nice too – less trick-oriented than usual, in a way that lets us focus on the colors of his tone – and drummer Joe Morello and bassist Eugene Wright are in top form, as usual. The beautiful full scale duets set from Peabo Bryson and Roberta Flack – a record that's no doubt defined by its biggest hit – but the rest is just as great! Born To Love kicks off with "Tonight I Celebrate My Love For You" – a song that's doubtlessly one of the most inescapable slow dance classics of all time – and if its ubiquity overshadows the rest of the record, that's not because it's any less excellent! Peabo's affectionate style is in top form here, and Roberta is such a perfect duet partner – with plenty of lead moments of her own. It definitely feels like a perfectly balanced partnership. The record's got some lovely slow jams on par with the aforementioned pop soul standard, plus some great ones that up the tempo a little bit. Other titles include "Blame It On Me", "Born To Love", "Heaven Above Me", "Comin' Alive", "Can We Find Love Again", "You're Looking Like Love To Me" and more. 3 bonus tracks on this Soulmusic CD version: US single version of "You're Looking Like Love To Me", plus UK 12" and 7" mixes of "Heaven Above Me". Southern Routes, 1950s. Used ... $8.99
The first-ever set we've seen dedicated to the overlooked doo wop genius of The Cardinals – a group that recorded for Atlantic Records in the same generation as The Drifters and The Clovers, but never received a full LP treatment by the label! We've always felt that lack is one of the reasons why The Cardinals never got the later exposure they deserved – because, as you'll hear here, they're a tremendous quintet – with especially sublime harmonies on the mellower numbers, which they make shine and sparkle in a way that rivals the early 50s best of The Orioles! Yet they're also pretty great on the groovers – able to move upbeat, but still retain the warmth of their vocals – really making them a perfect fit for Atlantic Records in the pre-soul years. The set includes all their recordings, and even includes a few rare demo tracks too – and titles include "I Won't Make You Cry Anymore", "The Bump", "Lovely Girl", "For A While", "Offshore", "Come Back My Love", "Under A Blanket Of Blue", "Wheel Of Fortune", "The Door Is Still Open", "I'll Always Love You", "The End Of The Story", and "One Love". Carpenter's music is an endearing mix of gruff lead vocals with honest emotion and no-nonsense acoustic guitars – and although some tunes have a slightly bigger sound, with keyboard, strings, and some slight backing vocals (including work from Emmylou Harris), the core energy of the record still comes strongly from Bob himself. A long-overdue collection of work by this sublime Ohio soul group of the 60s – a trio of lovely ladies with a really tremendous sound! The Charmaines – also known as Gigi & The Charmaines – are hardly the girl group cliche you might think from their sweet name and the image on the cover – and on most of the numbers here, they're hard-rolling at a pace that's somewhere between the best Detroit Northern Soul of the time, and some of the sweeter female soul that was coming out of Chicago at the end of the 60s. The music here was scored for a Mario Bava horror film, but it often has a quality that's more lean and lovely overall – that current of sex that we always love in Ciprani's best work, and which made him a key force for transforming the Italian bossa and jazz soundtrack style of the 60s into something completely new for the 70s! There's a lot of sweet keyboards in the music – as you'd expect from Stelvio – but there's also some cool rootsy percussion, which creates a nice juxtaposition between acoustic and electric, especially as things get a bit spookier near the end. Really lovely work from pianist John Coates – not the biggest name in American jazz in the 70s, but an artist who really reached a wide audience with this excellent live trio session! Coates was a player who mostly worked in eastern Pennsylvania, but was close enough to some of the bigger scenes to draw a lot of praise from critics and other musicians – all very well-earned, too – given his amazing style on this set. Coates is clearly a disciple of the Bill Evans school, but often has more of a punch and flow than Evans too – this way of opening up with a flurry of notes on the keyboard, then sliding into a groove with bassist DeWitt Kay and drummer Glen Davis. Early work by Alice Coltrane – somewhat under the shadow of her late husband, as you'd guess from the use of his name on the front cover – but really stepping out here with a voice of her own! The Monastic Trio of the set features Alice on harp and piano – alongside bass from Jimmy Garrison and drums by either Ben Riley or Rashied Ali – both really fluid players who open up nicely in this way that's never to far out, at least in the way that John Coltrane was using rhythms at the time – but which allow Alice to really take the lead as a bold musical visionary of her own! Perhaps most exciting, Pharoah Sanders sits in on one of the album's longest tracks – blowing tenor with a force that's enough to bring back The Great One – but the real charm of the set is Alice's piano work, bubbling out here with a sensitivity that we never would have expected from the harder-edge sessions cut with Coltrane – that new level of spirituality she instantly brought to her own solo sessions. Dawn/BGO (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 3CD ... $16.99
An amazing legacy in music from Mike Cooper – a British musician who started out in the world of folk blues, but never ended up moving towards some of the rockish modes of his contemporaries – instead finding his very own sort of special space in the freedom allowed by the Dawn Records label! The set begins with the very spare Oh Really – a set that has Mike Cooper mostly on guitar and vocals, in a style that's part Piedmont, part Delta blues – but also given a more folksy spin, and graced with Cooper's unusual vocals – almost making the whole thing feel like a spare acoustic version of Canned Heat territory – with titles that include "Maggie Campbell", "Saturday Blues", "Electric Chair", "Crow Jane", and "You're Gonna Be Sorry". Do I Know you is a record that follows up with a sound that's maybe a bit fuller than Mike Cooper's debut, but still relatively spare – with Mike on acoustic guitar and slide guitar, Harry Miller on bass (really great bass, by the way!), and Poor Little Anne on a bit of vocals. Miller brings these deep tones to the record that really transform things – and titles include "Do I Know You", "Start Of A Journey", "First Song", "Theme In C", and "The Link". Trout Steel is a beautiful set from the British scene at the start of the 70s – a record that's got a fairly folksy tone, but lots of jazzy currents as well! The set was issued on the seminal Dawn Records label – and really shows that imprint's commitment to the left side of the spectrum – as Mike Cooper's vocals and acoustic guitar come into play with more guitar from Stefan Grossman – plus alto sax from Mike Osborne, tenor and soprano from Alan Skidmore, piano from John Taylor, and bass from the late Harry Miller – all key players on the UK avant jazz scene of the time! The mix of these players with Cooper's core inspiration is not unlike some of the most progressive material coming from Island Records – or, even better, the special jazzy moments on records by Tim Buckley or Tim Hardin – company that Cooper could very easily keep, given the strength of his songwriting. Titles include "Don't Talk Too Fast", "On My Way", "Hope You See", "Weeping Rose", "Trout Steel", "I've Got Mine", "That's How", and "Pharoah's March". Places I Know blends Cooper's acoustic guitar and rootsy vocals with some very compelling arrangements from Mike Gibbs – the British jazz talent who was already known for his larger ensemble creations at the time, but who works here in these really subtle ways – to inflect Cooper's core inspirations with just some slight instrumental colors, tones, and phrases on most numbers – while Cooper brings in the core Machine Gun Co group on a few more. The result is a record that's way more than familiar folk – and arguably a lot hipper than most of the British acid folk of the time, too – on titles that include "Night Journey", "Paper & Smoke", "Country Water", "Time To Time", "Goodbye Blues Goodbye", and "Places I Know". The Machine Gun Co album is a partner record to Places I Know – recorded in the same sessions, but with tracks that are longer, and even more openly expressive – all with backings from the sweet Machine Gun Co quartet, a group with some especially nice electric piano from Alan Cook! Heavy use of that instrument really works against some of the folksier elements in Cooper's music – with these blocks of warm sound and color that really illuminate the tunes, and almost unlock a new level in the vocals. Cooper plays a bit of electric guitar at times – and titles include "So Glad That I Found You", "Lady Anne", "Midnight Words", and "Song For Abigail". CD also features songs from singles – "Your Lovely Ways (parts 1 & 2)", "Time In Hand", and "Schaabisch Hall". CD

Sweet strings glide in alongside tighter electric basslines on some tracks – and others feature evocative woodwind bits, haunting piano, and a few more dramatic orchestrations – all wrapped up with really lovely sound throughout, and reissued here in a wonderful new package that really fits the music! There's a few vocal tracks – "Tomorrow Is A Foreign Land" and "Time On My Hands" – sung in English by Melody – and other titles include "The Story Of A Dream", "Running Against The Time", "Cape Town Harbour", "Soldiers Aboard", "Red Clouds", "Ending A Dream", "Suspect & Love", and "You'll Kill Her". ✨✧ Blossom DearieBlossom Dearie – Live In London Vol 2 ... CD
Harkit (UK), 1966. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Warm and intimate vocals from one of our favorite singers ever! The set features the lovely Blossom Dearie recorded in London during the mid 60s – at a time when she was living in the city, and recording some of her best work ever. The set's got a spare approach that's similar to her Verve work of the late 50s – but the tunes are a bit hipper, with more groovy 60s numbers thrown into the mix – of the sort that we always love to hear Blossom sing! The recording quality's got a fair bit of "space" – but Blossom's vocals still come through with a lot of charm, offering up tunes that we never knew she'd recorded! Titles include "You Turn Me On Baby", "Put On A Happy Face", "The Best Is Yet To Come", "I've Got A Lot Of Livin To Do", "Everything I've Got", "Wallflower Lonely Cornflower Blue", and "That's My Style". A great look at the earliest years of the lovely Blossom Dearie – and a set that also features a surprising amount of work from reedman Bobby Jaspar, who was making big waves on the Paris jazz scene at the same time the young Blossom was living in France! CD1 features the pair together – a lovely set of duos with Bobby on flute and Blossom on piano, pulled from a rare 7" EP – which is then followed by a set of piano instrumentals lead by Dearie, from the album Jazz Sweet – a French-only release! The CD then follows with Blossom's great vocal jazz group The Blues Stars Of France – with tracks from both their first album and their rare EP – great vocal harmony numbers of bebop tunes. CD2 features Blossom's famous self-titled album for Verve – a great American debut – but then follows with lots more rare material, including a Blue Stars 7" single, a rare Dave Lambert & Buddy Stewart 78rpm single, and even other vocal tracks by Annie Ross and King Pleasure. CD3 mostly features material that focuses on the talents of Bobby Jaspar on flute – some under his own leadership, plus more with other artists and groups, including work with singer Helen Merrill, guitarist Rene Thomas, and trombonist JJ Johnson. 75 tracks in all – and a booklet of notes! Columbia, 1960. Very Good ... $11.99
One of the sexiest sets of vocal jazz to ever come from the British scene – a classic 1960 album by the lovely Diana Dors – easily one of England's best answers to American cheesecake singers of the 50s! As you'll notice by the cover, Diana's got a look that's right up there with Marilyn Monroe or Jayne Mansfield – but as a singer, she's far better – with a full range, and good sense of expression – often delivered in the manner of some of the best vocalists working in the US for RCA in the late 50s. The backings are great too – handled by the Wally Stott orchestra with a nice sense of jazz throughout – some really swinging horns that are quite unusual for a UK session like this at the time – and which really further the American feel of the set. Titles include "That's How It Is", "Namely You", "The Point Of No Return", "Roller Coaster Blues", "The Gentleman Is A Dope", "April Heart", "I'm In Love For The Very First Time", and "Tired Of Love". Durutti ColumnWithout Mercy (4CD set) ... CD
Factory Benelux (Luxembourg), 1986. New Copy 4 CDs ... $24.99
A beautiful little record from Durutti Column – and a bit of a departure for Vini Reilly, given that there's more of an overall concept to the album! The set's an all-instrumental one – a bit different than his blue-tinged vocal work of the first few Factory albums – but it's still awash in that wonderful guitar style of his – airy and atmospheric, but surprisingly pointed, too – really one of the strongest instrumental voices to emerge from the British post-punk scene, even if it was one of the most subtle! The music adds in piano, bits of strings, oboe, and other elements – really opening up the incredibly lovely melodies of the songs – almost in a Penguin Cafe Orchestra mode, which might be a good comparison to the spirit of the set. This beautiful version features 4 CDs' worth of material – bonus tracks on the main album, including "All That Love & Maths Can Do", "Snowflakes", "The Sea Wall", "Profondeurs Des Eaux Des Laques", "Duet", and "Estoril A Noite". Then, there's also three full CDs of concert material – a Manchester show from 2011, a London show from 1984, and an Oslo show from 1986. CD

Obscure/Astralwerks, 1975. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.99
A modern minimalist watershed – and maybe one of the first indications that Brian Eno was moving onto higher ideas in his music! The album's an important release on the Obscure series from Island Records – a special imprint that was curated by Eno, as a way of giving showcase to new ideas in British music that were neither free jazz, punk, prog, or any of the styles that were getting more play on the bigger labels! Instead, Eno and Obscure was to the British avant composition world what Lovely or CRI were to the US – although maybe had the bigger role of some of the Columbia Records releases by Philip Glass, Steve Reich, and Terry Riley. The album features the beautiful title piece – "Discreet Music", a long work that relies on a simple system of delay and recall, with slight variations occurring over the space of time, due to slight occasional interference from the composer. Side two features "Three Variations On The Cannon In D Major By Johann Pachelbel" – a great reworking of the baroque music classic – which works along similar lines, taking this very familiar classical theme, and breaking it down into simple components, which are then interwoven and played in repetition, creating a strange little bit of romantic minimalism. That second piece is performed by the Cockpit Ensemble, conducted by Gavin Bryars – who also got some great early releases on the Obscure label too! LP, Vinyl record album

The title certainly gets it right – as there's a strongly unified sense of spirit here from Family Atlantica – even more so than on their debut album! As before, there's a range of global elements moving through the mix – currents of South American and African styles, given a slightly more contemporary European presentation – but somehow these guys have really found a way to put everything together with an even tighter, more cohesive sound – one that expands through jazzy solo work on tenor, alto, trumpet, and trombone – and which really draws a lot from the wide range of percussion and other instrumentation used by co-leader Jack Yglesias. The lovely Luzmira Zerpa handles most of the vocals – and some percussion too – and the album also features guest appearances from 70s legends Orlando Julius on tenor and Marshal Allen on alto sax. Massive music from Ella Fitzgerald – 4CDs worth of sublime small group recordings – all of them live, and all of them previously unissued! The set follows the same format of the Verve Ella In Hollywood album – recorded in a small club setting, with combo backing that really lets Fitzgerald open up and swing – inflecting the tunes with the kind of warmth and spontaneity that she brought to her famous live performances of the time – which were almost always more compelling than her studio sides, no matter how great those were too! The first 3CDs feature material from two weeks' worth of recording in May of 1961 – with backing from Jim Hall on guitar, Lou Levy on piano, Wilfred Middlebrooks on bass, and Gus Johnson on drums – and CD four features Ella returning to Hollywood for two more nights in 1962, with trio backing from Paul Smith on piano, Middlebrooks on bass, and Stan Levey on drums. There's a massive 77 tracks in all – handsomely package in a hardcover 7" square book – which also features beautiful color pages inside, lots of notes on the music, and design that's every bit as groovy as the old albums on Verve. Titles include "Joe Williams' Blues", "It's De-Lovely", "Lorelei", "I Can't Get Started", "Round Midnight", "Perdido", "Little White Lies", "Lover Come Back To Me", "Across The Alley From The Alamo", "Love For Sale", "Exactly Like You", "Mack The Knife", "Teach Me Tonight", "My Kind Of Boy", "It Had To Be You", "Hard Hearted Hannah", "All Of Me", and "Too Darn Hot/Ella's Twist". Lovely lyrical sounds from Tommy Flanagan – a pianist who can be as deft as a bopper, but also bring in some richer currents of soul as well! Case in point is this great album from the late 70s – a time when Flanagan wasn't as much in the recording spotlight as the decade before, but a period when he'd actually matured a lot more as a player – able to step effortlessly between both his inclinations, especially when working with a group this great – a trio that features George Mraz on bass and Elvin Jones on drums! One of those records you hear and say "man, why wasn't this a classic?" – a tremendously well-conceived bit of British psychedelia from the end of the 60s, served up in a clear and focused style that holds up beautifully well over the years! There's a lean, no-nonsense quality here that really makes the record sparkle – a sense of a tune that makes each different number on the record come up with new delight – showing that The Fox were hardly just some happy accident in the studio, but a really great band that could've, should've gone onto much greater fame. But rather than ponder the might-haves in the group's career, let us just say that we're plenty darn happy to have this great LP – a real standout, even from a tremendous time in modern music – packaged here with great sound, notes on the group, and even a few bonus demo tracks! Piano, trumpet, and accordion – a really beautiful combination here in the hands of three masters of their instruments – trumpeter Paolo Fresu, accordionist Richard Galliano, and pianist Jan Lundgren! The set isn't the first this trio has recorded – and it definitely shows their deepening sympathies over time – with a special balance of space and sound, quiet and melody, of the sort that less comfortable musical partners wouldn't have been able to carry off this well! ✨✧ Curtis FullerOpener (RVG remaster edition) ... CD
Blue Note, 1957. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An obscure little groover from Curtis Fuller – and one of his hardest blowing sessions for Blue Note! Unlike some of the other Fuller sessions, which can have a slightly softer, rounder sound overall – this one's a much more in-the-pocket sort of Blue Note hardbop date – one that really cooks magically with contributions from Hank Mobley on tenor, Bobby Timmons on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Art Taylor on drums. Fuller's trombone is very hard-edged in this setting – in the same territory of his work with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, but with some slightly lyrical overtones too. Titles include a great reading of Oscar Pettiford's "Oscarlypso", plus Fuller's own "Lizzy's Bounce" and "Hugore" – and the tunes "A Lovely Way To Spend An Evening" and "Here's To My Lady". CD

France GallFrance Gall (1964) ... LP
Philips (France), 1964. Near Mint- ... $29.99
Early work by one of the grooviest singers in the French pop scene of the 60s – the lovely France Gall, working here with some very swinging arrangements from Alain Gouraguer! The grooves are wonderful throughout – sometimes jazzy, sometimes more in a "yeh yeh" pop vein – but always upbeat, lively, and youthful! Gall's voice has a lightly dreamy quality that skips along nicely over the top of the rhythms – not really a little girl mode, given her sense of command on the lyrics – but as cutely flirtatious enough to match the sexy spirit of the record! Titles include "Jazz A Gogo", "Soyons Sages", "Pense A Moi", "La Cloche", "Ca Va Je T'Aime", "Ne Dis Pas Aux Copains", "Mes Premieres Vraies Vacances", and "N'Ecoute Pas Les Idoles". Stan GetzCool Velvet/Voices ... CD
Verve, 1960/1966. Used ... $4.99
Very groovy CD that brings together 2 different albums that Stan Getz cut with larger groups and more baroque orchestrations than usual. The Cool Velvet set is from 1960, and has Stan's breathy alto blowing with arrangements by Russ Garcia. The material has Garcia's usual off-kilter sense, and although the sound is a bit 50's, Getz cuts through the tracks nicely. The real treat, though, is the incredible Voices album, which has stunning arrangements by Claus Ogerman, and beautiful jazz playing by Herbie Hancock, Jim Hall, Ron Carter, and Artie Butler. We love this album to death, and it's filled with some of Getz's best playing of the 60s. Titles include "Zigeuner Song", "Infinidad", "Darling Joe", "Once", and "Nica's Dream". The whole CD's packaged beautifully, and it's got a total of 21 lovely lovely tracks! CD

Stan Getz & Albert DaileyPoetry ... CD
Blue Note, 1983. Used ... $8.99
A lovely later recording from Stan Getz – very spare and spacious, and recorded with a casual approach that's quite striking, and really fresh! The album features Stan playing alongside pianist Albert Dailey – with no other rhythm accompaniment, just piano and tenor sax. The tunes are mostly familiar numbers, played in a relaxed, improvised mode that makes the whole thing feel like you're getting a lucky glimpse of Stan and Albert playing together in an after hours session or rehearsal. There's a bit of roughness in the recording, but given the depth of soul and color from both players, that quality also emerges as an honest humanity that only serves to make the recording more compelling! Titles include "Tune Up", "A Child Is Born", "Confirmation", "Round Midnight", and "Spring Can Really Hang You Up The Most". CD
