Jimmy LeeLovely Day ... CD
Society Hill, 2019. New Copy ... $6.99 15.99
A tribute to 70s soul, as you might guess from the Bill Withers title – served up here by Philly vocalist Jimmy Lee, with help from Society Hill producer/arranger Butch Ingram, and instrumentation from the whole Ingram Family! The style's got lots of contemporary elements in the mix – a fair bit of keyboards and rhythm programs, instead of fuller orchestrations – and Jimmy's vocal approach has a bit more of a rough edge than you might be used to hearing on these tracks – but in a way that makes for some nicely different versions of the songs. Titles include "Lovely Day", "I Think I'll Tell Her", "Hold Back The Night", "Pride & Joy", "Maybe Tomorrow", "Zoom", "Just Don't Want To Be Lonely", and "Look Me Up". CD

✨✧ PiscesLovely Sight ... CD
Numero, Late 60s. New Copy ... $7.99 15.98
Rare late 60s psychedelia from blue collar Rockford, Il – a totally great lost album of pop psych tunefulness from Pisces – who had an incredible knack for experimental sounds that weave in and out of the hallucinatory pop structure! The group centered around core players Jim Krein and Paul DiVenti, and a number of the tunes have fragile, beautiful lead vocals by Linda Bruner, bringing in a bit of Velvets style stark, haunting loveliness – and most of the tracks languished unreleased all this time! This is essentially the first real release of almost all of the tunes, and the best shot at finding an adventurous audience any of it has ever had! We think this stuff would have been hugely influential had it found an audience in its time, hell, it sounds to us like it actually did influence countless groups, even though that's hardly even possible! There's a tunefulness at the center that bears the fruits of the experimental pop sounds that came from benchmark scenes of the era, from Haight Ashbury to Abbey Road – but the found sound ephemera, tape manipulations, and tripped out atmospherics really bring in some far out vibes! An essential discovery from Numero that's as exciting, insistently groovy and eclectic as any of the rock oriented stuff they've dug up to date! Titles include "Dear One", "Children Kiss Your Mother Goodnight", "Motley Mary Ann", "Say Goodbye To John", "The Music Box", "Like A Hole In The Wall Where The Rat Lives", "Elephant Eyes", "Circle Of Time" and more – plus the "extended play" bonus tracks "A Flower For All Seasons" and "In The Summer A Grape Grows". Cherry Red (UK), Late 80s/Early 90s. New Copy 5CD ... $32.99
The complete run of music by The Primitives – their early singles, ful albums, and lots of bonus material – plus BBC sessions too! CD1 features The Lazy Years – early work from The Primitives – a selection of tracks from early singles they recorded for the Lazy label, before moving onto even bigger fame at a major label! We've always liked this work by the group the best – as it's nice and raw, with a good mix of muddy production, guitar fuzz, and darkly echoey vocals – very much a product of the same Creation Records influences that gave the world Jesus & Mary Chain. Titles include "She Don't Need You", "Thru The Flowers", "Where The Wind Blows", "Stop Killing Me", "Buzz Buzz Buzz", "Everything's Shining Bright", "Shadow", "Across My Shoulder", and "She Don't Need You". CDs 2, 3, and 4 feature the full albums Lovely, Pure, and Galore – all with lots of bonus tracks – and CD5 features 26 more tracks from BBC sessions recorded during the early Lazy Years, 1986 and 1987. Box set features a massive 118 tracks in all, a few previously unreleased! CD

David BehrmanLeapday Night (with bonus track) ... CD
Lovely, 1987. New Copy ... $11.99
One of David Behrman's coolest albums – a set of wonderful electronics that really lives up to the strange image on the cover – music that moves in these open, blocky passages that maybe take off from the future sound of the German electronic scene of the 70s, but which also have a starker, more spacey vibe overall! The long title track "Leapday Night" features trumpet from Rhys Chatham and Ben Neill – the latter of whom also plays "mutantrumpet" – and the use of those instruments almost links the work to that of Jon Hassell during the time, but with the electronics from Behrman much more at the core. The album also features the long "Interspecies Smalltalk" – which has similar blocky electronics, pulsating back and forth – mixed with violin from Takehisa Kosugi. CD also features one long bonus track – "Berlin NY" – with sound effects from Clara Mondshine, and keyboard improvisation from Jakino! CD

✨✧ Jon HassellVernal Equinox ... CD
Lovely/Ndeya, 1977. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
To most ears, trumpeter Jon Hassell first burst on to the world through his experiments with Brian Eno on EG Records, or maybe his 80s work on ECM – but here, on his debut for the small avant label Lovely Music, it's clear that Jon's already in complete control of his sound – and is ready to become the kind of performer that would captivate listeners for decades to come! Hassell's horn has that special sort of effect quality on most numbers here – spacey, but never slick – and electrified, but far from any sort of Miles Davis mode – especially considering that the music is full of earthy, organic percussion from Nana Vasconcelos and some other players, who balance out the set's work on Fender Rhodes, Arp, and Serge synthesizer. The spirit of the set is very much in Hassell's classic "fourth world" recordings – and titles include "Toucan Ocean", "Hex", "Blues Nile", "Vernal Equinox", and "Caracas Night September 11, 1975". This was an installation piece at the US Custom House in New York City as part of a show called "Custom & Culture" in 1979. Meredith MonkKey ... LP
Lovely, 1971. Very Good+ ... $36.99
Haunting early work by Meredith Monk – recorded in 1971, and performed by a small group of vocalists – all working with Monk in an incredible presentation of her new ideas for voice! The music is already at a place that's light years ahead of most – clearly marking the singer as one of the most visionary artists of her generation – as important as Philip Glass or Steve Reich – even though the more personal presentation of Monk's music never got her into the concert hall repertoire as much as her contemporaries. Meredith plays electric organ, jews harp, and sings – and the piece is one long work that covers the entire album. LP, Vinyl record album

Extra Lovely, 2019. New Copy ... $14.99 20.00
A really beautiful record by young Chilean pianist Enrique Rodriguez – a set that's got little more going on than piano and keyboards, but which really makes the most of those elements! Rodriguez plays in a style that's not entirely jazz – maybe more moody instrumentals with a slight bit of rhythm in the background, but always at a gentle pace – so that the tunes have a flow that's really driven by the keys, which sound equally great, whether acoustic or electric! Some tunes glow with a soundtrack theme style, others have a deeper soul vibe – and titles include "Chao", "Estamos Bien Aqui", "Una Pared", "Mantener El Arriba", "Ambos", "Lograr Decidirnos", "Lo Que Somos", and "Ni Siquiera Se Si Quiero Encontrarte". ✨✧ AirtoVirgin Land ... CD
Salvation/King (Japan), 1974. Used ... Out Of Stock
A great little fusion set from Airto – recorded in a mode that's a great bridge between his acoustic roots and some of his smoother albums in years to come! The sound has some key electric elements here – bits of bass, guitar, and keyboards – but there's still a strongly acoustic sound overall too, one that leaves plenty of room for Airto's unique jams on percussion, plus a bit of vocals from the lovely Flora Purim. Airto's got some top-shelf talents helping him out here – Billy Cobham on production, and Stanley Clarke and Milcho Leviev on arrangements – and there's a nice sense of darkness going on that even separates the album from some of Airto's other mid 70s sides on CTI. Titles include "Peasant Dance", "Musikana", "Virgin Land", and "Hot Sand". CD

A dream of a record if you love America as much as us – a set of rare early demo tracks that show the group's harmony charms in a wonderfully stripped-down mode! Most of the work here features acoustic guitar and just a bit of added instrumentation – yet the songs are maybe just as heavenly as the trio's famous studio sides produced by George Martin at the time – lean magic that completely reinvented the role of the harmony voice in rock music for the 70s! Titles include "Mandy (demo)", "Cornwall Blank (demo 2)", "Lovely Night (demo)", "Simple Life (alt mix)", "Letter (alt mix)", "Today's The Day (alt mix)", "Jameroony (acoustic guitar jam)", "You (vocal/strings excerpt)", and "Mad Dog (demo track mix with backing vocals)". Moodsville, Early 60s. Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Beautiful beautiful work from tenorist Gene Ammons – and an album that really demonstrates that during the 60s, one of Ammons' strongest suits was his work with a mellow tune or ballad! The tracks here are wonderfully laidback, but never sleepy – very soulful, and solidly put together in that Ammons-made gentle-blown way – using just a few notes to send the message out with a powerful punch, without ever overdoing things the way that a few of his tenor contemporaries might be tempted to do! The group's a great fit too – with the lovely Patti Brown on piano, plus bass from George Duvivier and bass from Ed Shaughnessy – and titles include "Two Different Worlds", "Skylark", "Three Little Words", "Street Of Dreams", and "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To". Isabelle AntenaEn Cavale ... CD
Giant, 1986. Used ... $6.99
Beautifully sweet and jazzy from the lovely Isabelle Antena – recording here under her own name, but still very much in the mode of the French trio from which she emerged! The record actually came about during the later years of Antena – at a time when the group was still recording sporadically, and still working very much in the spirit of the bossa and jazz styles of their debut. On this set, Isabelle steps forward a bit more as a lead singer, and the overall groove shows a bit more of a love of soul – blended together here with the jazz influences in a way that's very similar to the best side of Sade in her early years, but also handled here with a leaner, more personal indie style. There's a great 80s pop vibe running through the set – one that makes for some nicely catchy numbers, as well as a few dancefloor mis-steps! Titles include "Play Back", "Easy Street", "Seaside Weekend", "Magic Words", "How Can They Tell", and "Ten Minutes". CD

Ars NovaFields Of People – The Elektra & Atlantic Recordings 1968/1969 (Ars Nova/Sunshine & Shadows) ... CD
Esoteric (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99
A pair of great albums from the overlooked Ars Nova – back to back in a single set! First up is the 1968 self-titled Ars Nova – a wonderful little set of post-folk rock – with lots of lovely baroque touches! Ars Nova were really short-lived group – known for only two rare records – but they've got a sound that perfectly sums up a generation! There's a wonderful LA late 60s sound here – somewhere between Love and The Byrds, with the baroque touches of the former and the best country influences of the latter – all wrapped up in earnest, honest songwriting that makes even the ambitious moments come across with surprising charm. A true lost relic, and the kind of record that should be in any late 60s cannon! Titles include "Album In Your Mind", "Pavan For My Lady", "General Clover Ends A War", "And How Am I To Know", "Fields Of People", "Automatic Love", and "Song To The City". Sunshine & Shadows is the second tripped-out set from Ars Nova – an under-remembered late 60s group who had a great talent for blending together a range of different styles! At some level, Ars Nova share qualities with some of the harder-jamming groups of their time – but they've also got a sound that expands to bring in folk, blues, jazz, and more baroque elements – played by the group with a lineup that includes some nice work on trumpet by Jimmy Owens, who at this point was a core member of the combo. Brooks Arthur handled the overall music direction, with a quality that recalls some of his work on Verve – and the album features the wonderful bossa-styled groover "Walk On The Sand", a romping soul jazz take on Jimmy Owens' "You Had Better Listen", and the cuts "Rubbish", "Please Don't Go Now", "Temporary Serenade", "She Promises Everything", and "Round Once Again". A very cool compilation of tracks, seemingly recorded in the early 70s – but issued here in package designed to pay tribute to the 33-year history of the legendary Saravah label! Pierre Barouh, the founder of Saravah, is at the head of the party-like festivities, reciting his "Saravah Blues En 72". Brazilian percussionist Nana Vasconcelos performs quite a bit on a number of tracks, and other tracks feature performances by the group Mahjun and Jean-Roger Caussimon. The highlight is a lovely group vocal reading of Chico Buarque's "La Nuit Des Masques", with new French lyrics by Barouh, and nice percussion by Nana! Vocals are by male singer Chadwick Murray – not the lovely lady on the cover – and there's a cool crossover vibe here that takes us back to work by 70s genius talents like Eddie Hinton or Dan Penn, with guitar lines that are strong, but balanced by these warmer organ currents that really underscore the more soulful elements in the music – as do the laidback rhythms on the tunes. A sparking, richly spiritual jazz-influenced neo soul album from Rhian Benson – a Ghana born, London learned singer, with a style that has roots in some of the best deep soul and jazz styles of the past few decades! What really pushes Gold Coast over as such a strong debut is the way it balances a prevalent affinity for the best attributes of artists like Fela (very smooth Afrobeat horns and percussion influences), 70s Miles Davis and Ramsey Lewis (the soaring, but still earthy spiritual vibe) with the much crisper and more easily approachable hooks and melodies of the neo soul movement of the last decade. Rhian's vocals have a very lovely and natural way of never over extending with the note warbling histrionics (which plagues a few of her neo soul peers.) She comes off somewhere between Nina Simone and Sade – with a rich, expressively beautiful voice, but often rolling in sweet, kind of hushed tones for the best kind of natural feel. Jo BissoLove Somebody ... CD
Marlin/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1977. New Copy ... $22.99
Disco grooves, but with a definite difference – given that Jo Bisso had previously worked on the Parisian club scene, and brings a special flourish to this American album from the late 70s! Jo sings lead vocals on the side-long "Love Somebody" – a tune that builds strongly as Bisso gets answered by a trio of lovely ladies who really brighten up the sound – and who then seem to take over even more on the flipside working with singer Claudia Ferrari. This second side is even better than the first – as things get a bit more spare and stripped-down – snaking out on the smooth stepper "Your Love", getting some funky moogy touches on the P&P-like "Let's Keep It Together", and warming up on the mellow disco number "Thank You Baby". Paul BleyImprovisie (limited numbered edition) ... CD
America/Verve, 1972. Used ... $29.99
Incredible work from Paul Bley – and a record that captures him in his excellent electric period, working in a different setting than we've heard him elsewhere! The group on the set is a trio – one that matches Bley's work on electric piano and synthesizer with percussion from Han Bennink and vocals, piano, bass, and additional synthesizer from a young Annette Peacock! Peacock is especially restrained on the record – especially if you only know her later, straighter work – and her contribution here is wonderfully subtle and extremely lovely. Side one features the track "Improvisie", a free improvisation with Bley on electric piano and synthesizer – and tonalities are as "out" as the playing, which is generally quite spacious and dynamic – though hardly quiet. The second side features a Peacock tune titled "Touching" that's a bit more intense – very much in the spirit of the work on the first side, and a unique slice of magic from this one-off session! CD

Beautiful solo piano work from Paul Bley – spare, stark, and almost lovely – and a real contrast to some of his more aggressive experiments of the late 60s. The Bley here has almost a hint of sadness and longing, especially on the numbers that have him revisiting tunes he'd done on earlier records with an approach that was a bit stronger. It's hard to define the gentle charm that he brings here to "Ida Lupino", "Closer", "Harlem", "Seven", "Open To Love", and "Nothing Ever Was Anyway" – but one listen to the record, and its gorgeous recording of Bley's piano, should be enough! Some of the most famous 70s soundtrack work of French jazz musician Claude Bolling – served up here in a double-length CD that's overflowing with bonus material too! First up is the original score for Borsalino – a really lovely little soundtrack for the French film that starred Alain Delon and Jean-Paul Belmondo as gangsters in the roaring 20s – set to backings by pianist Claude Bolling that's balanced nicely between the styles of his trad jazz work on record, and some of the warmer thematic modes of the French soundtrack theme at the time! Bolling's piano is always very heavy in the mix – sometimes played with the rhythmic quality of a boogie woogie musician, sometimes more spaciously soundtracked – and augmented by just the right touches of strings. The record was a big Euro hit in the 70s, and still holds up well – and this version features 36 tracks from the film – far more than the original album! Borsalino & Co is the sequel – and features a score that takes off nicely from the first – still echoes of Bolling's piano on many tracks, but also fuller, more dramatic orchestrations at times – and maybe a wider range of jazz instrumentation too. CD features 15 tracks from Borsalino & Co – plus 6 more bonus tracks that include vocal songs by Michele Bach and Le Gang, a big band version of the theme, and a "Borsalino Medley" too. CD

Instrumentation is arguably even better than on Brasil 66 records – with wonderfully groovy organ lines from Manfredo Fest, who plays Lowrey organ instead of the usual Hammond. Flying Dutchman/Boplicity (UK), 1973. New Copy ... $10.99 18.99
A pair of later jazzy vocal LP gems by Teresa Brewer, both backed by jazz greats – Songs Of Bessie Smith with Count Basie and Thad Jones, and It Don't Mean A Thing If It Ain't Got That Swing with Duke Ellington – both released by Flying Dutchman in 1973! Teresa's popularity peaked a couple decades earlier as a girlish pop singer, and she succeeds strongly on both records – not just because of the jazz heavies in the band, but because she has the pipes and genuine affection for the material to pull it off. It's lovely stuff! Songs Of Bessie Smith have the bluesy overtones necessary to make it work, without trying the hide Teresa's naturally softer approach. Basie on piano throughout, with arrangements by Jones, and a great big band on half and more intimate arrangements on the other half. It Don't Mean A Thing. . .works just as wel, with Duke Ellington and Ernie Wilkins arrangements, and great Flying Dutchman players that include Bernard Purdie, Joe Beck and Mtume. 20 tracks in all, including "Trombone Cholly", "Gmme A Pigfoot", "I Ain't Got Nobody", "St Louis Blues", "I Ain't Got Nothing But The Blues", "Mood Indigo", "I'm Beginning To See The Light", "I've Got To Be A Rug Cutter", "Tulip Or Turnip", "I'ts Kinda Lonesome Out Tonight" and more. There's a quality here that reminds us of some of our favorite jazzy soul of the 70s – tight, but never too slick – and classy, yet still always wonderfully soulful in the lyrics. Plus, the tunes have some great Braziliany touches that really bring out the west coast vibe in the music – skipping around with a sense of lightness and life that we really love! We love this guy! Jim Ed Brown was the sublime smooth vocalist with The Browns – one of the greatest country harmony groups ever, featured here on a number of tracks that kick off this 20 track retrospective of Jim's years at RCA. The Browns had a sound that was a bit like the C&W version of The Chordettes – sweet and lovely, but tinged with darkness that really made them compelling. In the late 60s, Jim left the group and recorded as a solo act – cutting the sublime "Pop A Top" as one of his first singles, a killer drinking tune that is worth the price of the CD alone! Other solo work by Jim is great too – and titles on the CD include "Morning", "Southern Loving", "Sometime Sunshine", "Man & Wife Times", "Bottle Bottle", "You Can Have Her", "Here Today & Gone Tomorrow", and "Looking Back To See". Dennis had a way with a tune that often put dark corners in the back of lovely melodies – and this subtle sense of emotion is a perfect foil for the understated talents of Paul Desmond's alto work on the set. Brubeck himself is nice too – less trick-oriented than usual, in a way that lets us focus on the colors of his tone – and drummer Joe Morello and bassist Eugene Wright are in top form, as usual. The beautiful full scale duets set from Peabo Bryson and Roberta Flack – a record that's no doubt defined by it's biggest hit – but the rest is just as great! Born To Love kicks off with "Tonight I Celebrate My Love For You" – a song that's doubtlessly one of the most inescapable slow dance classics ever – and if its ubiquity overshadows the rest of the record, that's not because it's any less excellent! Peabo's affectionate style is in top form here, and Roberta is such a perfect duet partner – with plenty of lead moments of her own. It definitely feels like a perfectly balanced partnership. The record's got some lovely slow jams on par with the aforementioned pop soul standard, plus some great ones that up the tempo a little bit. Burrell plays with only bass accompaniment on most tracks on the LP – and the tracks have a beautifully introspective quality, with long searching solo lines, and a fragile sense of spirituality that makes the whole thing hang together. Side one features stunning versions of Ellington/Strahorn material – like "Lush Life", "A Flower Is A Lovesome Thing", and "Come Sunday" – but side two is even better, as it showcases great spare Burrell compositions, like "Crucificade", "Budapest Conclusion", and "Mexico City". A game-changing album from Change – a real breakthrough for the early 80s international soul combo! Change Of Heart has some great production by Jimmy Jam/Terry Lewis – and on top of that, it's perhaps the best set of songs the group had recorded to to date. Jam/Lewis wrote half the tunes and produced most of the album, which is front-loaded with some of the best of them. They kick up the beat them the big hit "Change Of Heart", along with the great "You Are My Melody", "True Love", "It Burns Me Up", and the more mellow "Say You Love Me Again", the album's opener. A beautiful set of hipster jazz vocals! This legendary album by Pittsburgh pianist Frank Cunimondo has always been a favorite for the jazz-dance groover "Feelin Good" – a cut which has an incredible drum and bass riff, and which has been sampled more than a few times over the past few years. But even above that track, the whole album's pretty darn great – and it features an excellent set of vocals by the lovely Lynn Marino, a very unique vocalist with a sweet style that's sort of like Blossom Dearie. The whole album's got a lovely light groove, with some heavy rolling piano lines from Frank, tight rhythm backing by the trio, and a great sweet sound from Lynn. A real treasure, and impossible to find on the original vinyl. Titles include "Beyond The Clouds", "Pretty Pretty", "What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life", "Love So Fine", "A House Is Not A Home", and the incredible "Feelin Good"! CD

Flying Dutchman/Modern Harmonic, 1967. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A very wild soundtrack! The film is about The Minx, a crew of lovelies trained in the art of sensual pleasure and corporate espionage – and the original music for the film, by the rock group The Cyrkle, is about as cool as you'd expect from a theme like that! Some cuts are straight trippy rock numbers – in a mode that's somewhere between the Barbarella soundtrack and work on some of the AIP soundtracks on Tower – but then there's also some cool instrumentals, with a mixture of easy instrumentation and 60s rock effects. Titles include "On The Road", "The Minx", "Nicole", "The Party", "Walter's Riff", and "The Chase". Groovy stuff – with a real sexy Euro sound at the best moments! Mono bonus cuts include "It's A Lovely Game Louise", "The Riggin",j "Baxter's Dangerous Game", and "Something Special". LP, Vinyl record album

A really lovely late-life portrait of Billie Holiday – an oversize book that's filled with black and white photographs taken during the month of April, 1957 – when Billie was headlining at the Sugar Hill club in Newark! Holiday's late troubles are well-known, and often etched upon her face on album covers from the period – but this book really gets past some of those too-familiar cliches, and captures the singer in a range of really vivid ways – onstage and off, outside and in, alone or with family, and always a really fantastic subject for the camera. Book is 144 pages, hardcover, oversize, and black and white. Book

The title's terrible, but the album's a great one – a really classic-styled jam session, of the sort that the Prestige label hardly ever recorded! The session features 4 tenor giants of slightly older vintage – Eddie Lockjaw Davis, Coleman Hawkins, Arnett Cobb, and Buddy Tate – all coming together in some loosely-structured arrangements that offer the same sympathetic blowing space that you might get from an all-star tenor date on Verve. An excellent 70s Italian film score – penned for a political thriller, but handled with a fair bit of sweet and lovely themes! The album's one of the best we've ever heard from Francesco De Masi, and it nicely mixes his usual strong talents for action with a bit more warmth that befits the sexier side of the Italian cinematic spectrum. Sweet strings glide in alongside tighter electric basslines on some tracks – and others feature evocative woodwind bits, haunting piano, and a few more dramatic orchestrations – all wrapped up with really lovely sound throughout, and reissued here in a wonderful new package that really fits the music! There's a few vocal tracks – "Tomorrow Is A Foreign Land" and "Time On My Hands" – sung in English by Melody – and other titles include "The Story Of A Dream", "Running Against The Time", "Cape Town Harbour", "Soldiers Aboard", "Red Clouds", "Ending A Dream", "Suspect & Love", and "You'll Kill Her". A great look at the earliest years of the lovely Blossom Dearie – and a set that also features a surprising amount of work from reedman Bobby Jaspar, who was making big waves on the Paris jazz scene at the same time the young Blossom was living in France! CD1 features the pair together – a lovely set of duos with Bobby on flute and Blossom on piano, pulled from a rare 7" EP – which is then followed by a set of piano instrumentals lead by Dearie, from the album Jazz Sweet – a French-only release! The CD then follows with Blossom's great vocal jazz group The Blues Stars Of France – with tracks from both their first album and their rare EP – great vocal harmony numbers of bebop tunes. CD2 features Blossom's famous self-titled album for Verve – a great American debut – but then follows with lots more rare material, including a Blue Stars 7" single, a rare Dave Lambert & Buddy Stewart 78rpm single, and even other vocal tracks by Annie Ross and King Pleasure. CD3 mostly features material that focuses on the talents of Bobby Jaspar on flute – some under his own leadership, plus more with other artists and groups, including work with singer Helen Merrill, guitarist Rene Thomas, and trombonist JJ Johnson. 75 tracks in all – and a booklet of notes! Blue Note, 1967. Sealed ... $14.99
An unusual session from the heart of Lou Donaldson's return to Blue Note in the late 60s – a mellower date that stands in strong contrast to his funkier albums of the time! As you might guess from the title, there's a lusher feel going on here – one that has Lou's alto sax augmented by larger backings from Duke Pearson – who manages to score things perfectly with a balance of soul and sophistication. The album's hardly a "Donaldson with strings" date – and instead is done in the more mature mode that Duke was using in some of his own sides from the time, and on work with players like Donald Byrd or Stanley Turrentine. Other players here include Wayne Shorter on tenor, Pepper Adams on baritone, Jerry Dodgion on alto and flute, Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, and Garnett Brown on trombone – plus core rhythms from the trio of McCoy Tyner on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and Al Harewood on drums. Titles include "Sweet Slumber", "The Good Life", "Sweet & Lovely", "Stardust", and "You've Changed" – and the album was recorded in the 60s, it was only first issued in Japan in 1980 – and even then only later in the US! Sanctuary/BMG, 2005. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $28.99 29.99
Earth Wind & Fire's most ambitiously orchestrated records of recent years – one that pairs the legendary funk/soul/pop collective with contemporary players such as Will I Am of Black Eyed Peas, Raphael Saadiq, Floetry, Big Boi of Outkast, Sleepy Brown and others! Believe us, we were as skeptical as the rest of you when this project first materialized, so it's really a wonderful surprise to report that it works very well! The album is essentially a modern, uptempo neo soul effort by a group that just happens to be legendary – with clean vocals and horns by the group, and warm production by Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, Will I Am and Raphael Saadiq. It may not be a classic on par with the 70s work, but it's easily the best Earth Wind & Fire album in at least a decade! Tracks include "Lovely People" feat Will I Am, "Show Me The Way" feat Raphael Saadiq, "Work It Out", "Elevated" feat Floetry, "Pass You By", "Pure Gold" and more! A very groovy album from the Brazilian scene at the start of the 70s – a set that's part samba, and part warm harmony vocals – in the mode first explored by Sergio Mendes, Quarteto Em Cy, and other great groups of the 60s! Edgar is Edgar Gianullo – who sings and also handles the arrangements – but the album's got equally strong help from the rest of the group – who harmonize along in the background, alongside the lovely Naneco, the female singer who soars out in the lead! The production is great – very much in the best EMI/Odeon mode, with some of the complexity of work by Os Tres Morais or Antonio Adolfo in the same period – and a young Toquinho is even on the record on guitar. Brian EnoDiscreet Music ... CD
Virgin/EMI (UK), 1975. New Copy ... $10.99
A modern minimalist watershed – and maybe one of the first indications that Brian Eno was moving onto higher ideas in his music! The album's an important release on the Obscure series from Island Records – a special imprint that was curated by Eno, as a way of giving showcase to new ideas in British music that were neither free jazz, punk, prog, or any of the styles that were getting more play on the bigger labels! Instead, Eno and Obscure was to the British avant composition world what Lovely or CRI were to the US – although maybe had the bigger role of some of the Columbia Records releases by Philip Glass, Steve Reich, and Terry Riley. The album features the beautiful title piece – "Discreet Music", a long work that relies on a simple system of delay and recall, with slight variations occurring over the space of time, due to slight occasional interference from the composer. Side two features "Three Variations On The Cannon In D Major By Johann Pachelbel" – a great reworking of the baroque music classic – which works along similar lines, taking this very familiar classical theme, and breaking it down into simple components, which are then interwoven and played in repetition, creating a strange little bit of romantic minimalism. That second piece is performed by the Cockpit Ensemble, conducted by Gavin Bryars – who also got some great early releases on the Obscure label too! CD

Other titles include "Irish Setter", "Commemorative Transfiguration & Communion At Magruder Park", and "Lion". Requia is excellent work by Fahey – all solo, and featuring some wonderful production on the guitar that brings out all the brilliance of his warm chromatic playing. A wonderful soundtrack from one of the grooviest shows to ever run on American TV – the legendary Love American Style, a great program with a great soundtrack from Charles Fox! The record is split up into vocal and instrumental sides – making for a really unique record that shows both sides of his talents. The vocal tracks were co-penned with Norman Gimbel and Arnold Margolin – and have tracks in a cool post-Sunshine style that's sometimes soft rock, but which often sparkles with the livelier touches of Fox's earlier soundtrack work. Singers aren't listed, but they're all a perfect fit – and titles include the sublime theme "Love American Style", plus "Where Do I Go", "New World Song", and "Lovely One". Side two is all instrumental, and almost even better – slinky easy numbers with a more "adult" feel than work of this type from the 60s – but still very much in the best Fox-ish mode of classics like Goodbye Columbus or Barbarella. A few tracks get a bit funky, and even the mellower ones have some really playful instrumental touches that go way past similar work of the time – the kind of cool juxtapositions and isolated recording modes you'd hear from European soundtracks in the early 70s. Titles include "The Brass Bed", "About Her", "So Little Time", and "Long Ago Yesterday". LP, Vinyl record album

One of the coolest, grooviest albums we've ever heard from vibist Dave Friedman – a set that really lives up to the promise we sometimes expect from other records of his, but never find this clearly! Friedman plays both marimba and vibes – the latter with this bold, chromatic quality that comes through even in gentle moments – a bit like Gary Burton, but turned towards much more varied ends here – as the songs really shift in mood and approach, keeping things fresh throughout! Vocalist Rimona Francis lends her lovely wordless singing style to about half the album's tracks – but in a way that's more like an instrument than a conventional jazz singer – and the group also features surprisingly great acoustic piano work from Pat Rebillot (who we mostly know from keyboard sessions), plus Harvie Swartz on bass and Bruce Ditmas on drums. ✨✧ Champian FultonStylings Of Champian ... CD
Champian, 2018. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
That's a mighty sunny image on the cover from Champian Fulton – a singer we'd normally associate with a small jazz club in the wee small hours of the evening – given the classic combo approach of her sound! Fulton's a heck of a pianist, and a great singer too – and this album takes us back to the era of Blossom Dearie – where a completely charming lead artist was more than enough to keep things interesting, even if the tunes themselves are all familiar! Champain swings things nicely, but with lots of surprises along the way – both instrumental and vocal – and the core trio with Hide Tanaka on bass and Fukushi Tainaka on drums is also augmented by the flugelhorn of Stephen Fulton on about half the album's tracks. Titles include the original "Rodeo", plus a nice version of Cedar Walton's "Martha's Prize", and takes on "Lonesome & Sorry", "Isn't It A Lovely Day", "Day By Day", "Lollipops & Roses", "Darn That Dream", and "Blues Etude". Stan GetzCool Velvet/Voices ... CD
Verve, 1960/1966. Used ... $4.99
Very groovy CD that brings together 2 different albums that Stan Getz cut with larger groups and more baroque orchestrations than usual. The Cool Velvet set is from 1960, and has Stan's breathy alto blowing with arrangements by Russ Garcia. The material has Garcia's usual off-kilter sense, and although the sound is a bit 50's, Getz cuts through the tracks nicely. The real treat, though, is the incredible Voices album, which has stunning arrangements by Claus Ogerman, and beautiful jazz playing by Herbie Hancock, Jim Hall, Ron Carter, and Artie Butler. We love this album to death, and it's filled with some of Getz's best playing of the 60s. Titles include "Zigeuner Song", "Infinidad", "Darling Joe", "Once", and "Nica's Dream". The whole CD's packaged beautifully, and it's got a total of 21 lovely lovely tracks! CD

✨✧ Stan Getz & Joao GilbertoGetz/Gilberto ... LP
Verve, 1963. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A landmark record – both in 60s jazz and bossa nova – and a set that not only bridged worlds of music, but set the tone for so many other albums to come! By the time of this 1964 set, Stan Getz had already issued a few bossa nova experiments on Verve – but this pairing with guitarist Joao Gilberto really pushed the format over the top – thanks in part to the vocals of Gilberto's lovely wife Astrud, who'd never sung in the studio before this famous recording! The record created a sound that was copied endlessly, and which catapulted Astrud to unbelievable fame worldwide – even though she was only included in the session at the last minute, because Joao couldn't sing in English – and the mix of Stan's tenor and Joao's guitar is wonderful – and backed throughout by this light, lilting bossa nova rhythms. Titles include the classic recording of "Girl From Ipanema", plus loads of other bossa classics like "Desafinado", "Cocovado", "O Grande Amor", and "Vivo Sonhando". LP, Vinyl record album
