Jimmy LeeLovely Day ... CD
Society Hill, 2019. New Copy ... $6.99 15.99
A tribute to 70s soul, as you might guess from the Bill Withers title – served up here by Philly vocalist Jimmy Lee, with help from Society Hill producer/arranger Butch Ingram, and instrumentation from the whole Ingram Family! The style's got lots of contemporary elements in the mix – a fair bit of keyboards and rhythm programs, instead of fuller orchestrations – and Jimmy's vocal approach has a bit more of a rough edge than you might be used to hearing on these tracks – but in a way that makes for some nicely different versions of the songs. Titles include "Lovely Day", "I Think I'll Tell Her", "Hold Back The Night", "Pride & Joy", "Maybe Tomorrow", "Zoom", "Just Don't Want To Be Lonely", and "Look Me Up". CD

Numero, Late 60s. New Copy ... $7.99 15.98
Rare late 60s psychedelia from blue collar Rockford, Il – a totally great lost album of pop psych tunefulness from Pisces – who had an incredible knack for experimental sounds that weave in and out of the hallucinatory pop structure! The group centered around core players Jim Krein and Paul DiVenti, and a number of the tunes have fragile, beautiful lead vocals by Linda Bruner, bringing in a bit of Velvets style stark, haunting loveliness – and most of the tracks languished unreleased all this time! This is essentially the first real release of almost all of the tunes, and the best shot at finding an adventurous audience any of it has ever had! We think this stuff would have been hugely influential had it found an audience in its time, hell, it sounds to us like it actually did influence countless groups, even though that's hardly even possible! There's a tunefulness at the center that bears the fruits of the experimental pop sounds that came from benchmark scenes of the era, from Haight Ashbury to Abbey Road – but the found sound ephemera, tape manipulations, and tripped out atmospherics really bring in some far out vibes! An essential discovery from Numero that's as exciting, insistently groovy and eclectic as any of the rock oriented stuff they've dug up to date! Titles include "Dear One", "Children Kiss Your Mother Goodnight", "Motley Mary Ann", "Say Goodbye To John", "The Music Box", "Like A Hole In The Wall Where The Rat Lives", "Elephant Eyes", "Circle Of Time" and more – plus the "extended play" bonus tracks "A Flower For All Seasons" and "In The Summer A Grape Grows". Cherry Red (UK), Late 80s/Early 90s. New Copy 5CD ... $32.99
The complete run of music by The Primitives – their early singles, ful albums, and lots of bonus material – plus BBC sessions too! CD1 features The Lazy Years – early work from The Primitives – a selection of tracks from early singles they recorded for the Lazy label, before moving onto even bigger fame at a major label! We've always liked this work by the group the best – as it's nice and raw, with a good mix of muddy production, guitar fuzz, and darkly echoey vocals – very much a product of the same Creation Records influences that gave the world Jesus & Mary Chain. Titles include "She Don't Need You", "Thru The Flowers", "Where The Wind Blows", "Stop Killing Me", "Buzz Buzz Buzz", "Everything's Shining Bright", "Shadow", "Across My Shoulder", and "She Don't Need You". CDs 2, 3, and 4 feature the full albums Lovely, Pure, and Galore – all with lots of bonus tracks – and CD5 features 26 more tracks from BBC sessions recorded during the early Lazy Years, 1986 and 1987. Box set features a massive 118 tracks in all, a few previously unreleased! CD

✨✧ David BehrmanLeapday Night (with bonus track) ... CD
Lovely, 1987. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of David Behrman's coolest albums – a set of wonderful electronics that really lives up to the strange image on the cover – music that moves in these open, blocky passages that maybe take off from the future sound of the German electronic scene of the 70s, but which also have a starker, more spacey vibe overall! The long title track "Leapday Night" features trumpet from Rhys Chatham and Ben Neill – the latter of whom also plays "mutantrumpet" – and the use of those instruments almost links the work to that of Jon Hassell during the time, but with the electronics from Behrman much more at the core. The album also features the long "Interspecies Smalltalk" – which has similar blocky electronics, pulsating back and forth – mixed with violin from Takehisa Kosugi. CD also features one long bonus track – "Berlin NY" – with sound effects from Clara Mondshine, and keyboard improvisation from Jakino! CD

✨✧ Jon HassellVernal Equinox ... CD
Lovely/Ndeya, 1977. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
To most ears, trumpeter Jon Hassell first burst on to the world through his experiments with Brian Eno on EG Records, or maybe his 80s work on ECM – but here, on his debut for the small avant label Lovely Music, it's clear that Jon's already in complete control of his sound – and is ready to become the kind of performer that would captivate listeners for decades to come! Hassell's horn has that special sort of effect quality on most numbers here – spacey, but never slick – and electrified, but far from any sort of Miles Davis mode – especially considering that the music is full of earthy, organic percussion from Nana Vasconcelos and some other players, who balance out the set's work on Fender Rhodes, Arp, and Serge synthesizer. The spirit of the set is very much in Hassell's classic "fourth world" recordings – and titles include "Toucan Ocean", "Hex", "Blues Nile", "Vernal Equinox", and "Caracas Night September 11, 1975". Meredith MonkKey ... LP
Lovely, 1971. Very Good+ ... $24.99
Haunting early work by Meredith Monk – recorded in 1971, and performed by a small group of vocalists – all working with Monk in an incredible presentation of her new ideas for voice! The music is already at a place that's light years ahead of most – clearly marking the singer as one of the most visionary artists of her generation – as important as Philip Glass or Steve Reich – even though the more personal presentation of Monk's music never got her into the concert hall repertoire as much as her contemporaries. Meredith plays electric organ, jews harp, and sings – and the piece is one long work that covers the entire album. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Enrique RodriguezLo Que Es (red vinyl pressing) ... LP
Extra Lovely, 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really beautiful record by young Chilean pianist Enrique Rodriguez – a set that's got little more going on than piano and keyboards, but which really makes the most of those elements! Rodriguez plays in a style that's not entirely jazz – maybe more moody instrumentals with a slight bit of rhythm in the background, but always at a gentle pace – so that the tunes have a flow that's really driven by the keys, which sound equally great, whether acoustic or electric! Some tunes glow with a soundtrack theme style, others have a deeper soul vibe – and titles include "Chao", "Estamos Bien Aqui", "Una Pared", "Mantener El Arriba", "Ambos", "Lograr Decidirnos", "Lo Que Somos", and "Ni Siquiera Se Si Quiero Encontrarte". Alessandro AlessandroniE Il Suo Complesso ... LP
Sonor (Italy), 1970s. New Copy (reissue)... About January 22, 2021
A gorgeous bit of bossa jazz from Italy – and a key non-soundtrack album from the great Alessandro Alessandroni! The session's a bit more jazz-based than some of Alessandroni's soundtrack work from the 60s, but in a good way – one that really opens up the tunes, and provides for some spontaneous improvisation that only deepens their spirit and sound. The lovely Edda Dell'Orso sings wordless vocals on a number of tracks – scatting in a cool and groovy way that's almost even better than her famous soundtrack recordings. Some tracks have organ, others have acoustic piano – but the whole thing's grooving very nicely all the way through – with the kind of dreamy dreamy sound we'd rank right up there with the best coming out of Italy at the time! Titles include "Meccanico", "Primavera", "Introverso", "Bossa Italiana", "Beat For Love", "Hammurabi", and "Psichedelico". LP, Vinyl record album

Mayra AndradeStoria Storia ... CD
RCA/Sony (France), 2009. Used ... $11.99
Cape Verdean vocals from Mayra Andrade, but carried off with a warm and lovely feel that's almost bossa nova at points! Andrade's gently expressive in her lyrics – singing soulfully, but subtly alongside these sweet little rhythms with a touch of jazz, and some earthier percussion elements at the bottom – a blend that's almost in the territory of Maria Rita at points, but more personal overall. As with Rita, there's a bit of a stylistic link here to some of the classic work of Elis Regina – more in spirit than overall sound, as Mayra manages the same careful balance of emotion and expressivity we always love in Elis. Titles include "Palavra", "Mon Carrousel", "Morena Menina Linda", "Odjus Fitchadu", "Konsiensia", "Juana", "Seu", "Storia Storia", and "Lembransa". CD

Isabelle AntenaEn Cavale ... CD
Giant, 1986. Used ... $4.99
Beautifully sweet and jazzy from the lovely Isabelle Antena – recording here under her own name, but still very much in the mode of the French trio from which she emerged! The record actually came about during the later years of Antena – at a time when the group was still recording sporadically, and still working very much in the spirit of the bossa and jazz styles of their debut. On this set, Isabelle steps forward a bit more as a lead singer, and the overall groove shows a bit more of a love of soul – blended together here with the jazz influences in a way that's very similar to the best side of Sade in her early years, but also handled here with a leaner, more personal indie style. There's a great 80s pop vibe running through the set – one that makes for some nicely catchy numbers, as well as a few dancefloor mis-steps! Titles include "Play Back", "Easy Street", "Seaside Weekend", "Magic Words", "How Can They Tell", and "Ten Minutes". CD

Ars NovaFields Of People – The Elektra & Atlantic Recordings 1968/1969 (Ars Nova/Sunshine & Shadows) ... CD
Esoteric (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99
A pair of great albums from the overlooked Ars Nova – back to back in a single set! First up is the 1968 self-titled Ars Nova – a wonderful little set of post-folk rock – with lots of lovely baroque touches! Ars Nova were really short-lived group – known for only two rare records – but they've got a sound that perfectly sums up a generation! There's a wonderful LA late 60s sound here – somewhere between Love and The Byrds, with the baroque touches of the former and the best country influences of the latter – all wrapped up in earnest, honest songwriting that makes even the ambitious moments come across with surprising charm. A true lost relic, and the kind of record that should be in any late 60s cannon! Titles include "Album In Your Mind", "Pavan For My Lady", "General Clover Ends A War", "And How Am I To Know", "Fields Of People", "Automatic Love", and "Song To The City". Sunshine & Shadows is the second tripped-out set from Ars Nova – an under-remembered late 60s group who had a great talent for blending together a range of different styles! At some level, Ars Nova share qualities with some of the harder-jamming groups of their time – but they've also got a sound that expands to bring in folk, blues, jazz, and more baroque elements – played by the group with a lineup that includes some nice work on trumpet by Jimmy Owens, who at this point was a core member of the combo. Brooks Arthur handled the overall music direction, with a quality that recalls some of his work on Verve – and the album features the wonderful bossa-styled groover "Walk On The Sand", a romping soul jazz take on Jimmy Owens' "You Had Better Listen", and the cuts "Rubbish", "Please Don't Go Now", "Temporary Serenade", "She Promises Everything", and "Round Once Again". Art Ensemble Of ChicagoArt Ensemble Of Chicago With Fontella Bass (limited numbered edition) ... CD
America/Verve, 1972. Used ... $24.99
One of a few wonderful albums recorded by the Art Ensemble of Chicago with singer Fontella Bass – a vocalist who's best known to the world for her 60s soul hits, but who's coming out here as a tremendous force in modern jazz! Fontella's sound here is miles away from that of her work for Chess – deeply organic, and with chanted qualities that one would have never expected in earlier years. The track "How Strange/Ole Jed" builds with a sound that's similar to other Art Ensemble work in Paris – but has more than enough space for some lovely chants and vocalizations from Bass. "Horn Web" follows with a more driven, percussive approach – offering a tremendous showcase for Don Moye's work on drums at the start, then moving into more contemplative space to be explored by the entire group. Really lovely work from Brazilian singer Mariana Aydar – a set that's done in a mix of samba and contemporary styles, often with a nicely understated feel! The album's co-produced by Kassin, who also plays on some tracks too – and you can really hear a lot of his influence in the music – unusual twists and turns underneath Mariana's sweeter vocals, in ways that really keep things interesting – and which help move the record past any simple expectations you might have. It's hard to put an easy tag on the sound of the record – but it's charms are many, and titles include "O Samba Me Persegue", "Teu Amor E Falso", "Manha Azul", "Ta", "Piexes", "Beleza", "Palavras Nao Falam", "Tudo Que Eu Trago No Bolso", and "Poderoso Rei". Like that great set, there's a nice undercurrent of soulfulness here – a Milton Nascimento legacy that spins out in the complicated arrangements, and warmly glowing instrumentation – sometimes soaring and searching, but never in a too jamming way. The group features alto and soprano sax by Roberto Sion, soprano by Hecto Costita, bass by Nico Assumpcao, and piano and clavinet work by Ayers – and there's some lovely Joyce-like vocals on one track. Rhian BensonGold Coast ... CD
DKG Music, 2003. Used ... $0.99
A sparking, richly spiritual jazz-influenced neo soul album from Rhian Benson – a Ghana born, London learned singer, with a style that has roots in some of the best deep soul and jazz styles of the past few decades! What really pushes Gold Coast over as such a strong debut is the way it balances a prevalent affinity for the best attributes of artists like Fela (very smooth Afrobeat horns and percussion influences), 70s Miles Davis and Ramsey Lewis (the soaring, but still earthy spiritual vibe) with the much crisper and more easily approachable hooks and melodies of the neo soul movement of the last decade. Rhian's vocals have a very lovely and natural way of never over extending with the note warbling histrionics (which plagues a few of her neo soul peers.) She comes off somewhere between Nina Simone and Sade – with a rich, expressively beautiful voice, but often rolling in sweet, kind of hushed tones for the best kind of natural feel. Nice! 14 tracks including "Words Hurt Too", "Say How I Feel", "Stealing My Peace Of Mind", "Soul Boy", "Shake It Away", "A Moment In Shine", "Gold Sky", "Young Girl" and more. CD

Lovely work from Maria Bethania – a set that's often quite spare and understated, with less of the drama than her classic years – but in really great way! Maria's got a warmth here that we really like – not that too-smooth style that some older Brazilian artists get in a commercial setting – but almost a more back-to-basics approach – earthier than Bethania ever was at her start. Disco grooves, but with a definite difference – given that Jo Bisso had previously worked on the Parisian club scene, and brings a special flourish to this American album from the late 70s! Jo sings lead vocals on the side-long "Love Somebody" – a tune that builds strongly as Bisso gets answered by a trio of lovely ladies who really brighten up the sound – and who then seem to take over even more on the flipside working with singer Claudia Ferrari. This second side is even better than the first – as things get a bit more spare and stripped-down – snaking out on the smooth stepper "Your Love", getting some funky moogy touches on the P&P-like "Let's Keep It Together", and warming up on the mellow disco number "Thank You Baby". Special bonus – CD features a fifth track – not titled or credited at all! CD

A pair of later jazzy vocal LP gems by Teresa Brewer, both backed by jazz greats – Songs Of Bessie Smith with Count Basie and Thad Jones, and It Don't Mean A Thing If It Ain't Got That Swing with Duke Ellington – both released by Flying Dutchman in 1973! Teresa's popularity peaked a couple decades earlier as a girlish pop singer, and she succeeds strongly on both records – not just because of the jazz heavies in the band, but because she has the pipes and genuine affection for the material to pull it off. It's lovely stuff! Songs Of Bessie Smith have the bluesy overtones necessary to make it work, without trying the hide Teresa's naturally softer approach. Basie on piano throughout, with arrangements by Jones, and a great big band on half and more intimate arrangements on the other half. It Don't Mean A Thing. . .works just as wel, with Duke Ellington and Ernie Wilkins arrangements, and great Flying Dutchman players that include Bernard Purdie, Joe Beck and Mtume. 20 tracks in all, including "Trombone Cholly", "Gmme A Pigfoot", "I Ain't Got Nobody", "St Louis Blues", "I Ain't Got Nothing But The Blues", "Mood Indigo", "I'm Beginning To See The Light", "I've Got To Be A Rug Cutter", "Tulip Or Turnip", "I'ts Kinda Lonesome Out Tonight" and more. Lovely work from singer Brigette – recorded with a sound that's warm, sunny, and soulful – and helped out by some nice jazzy touches from guitarists Dori Caymmi and Heito Pereira, and flautist Hubert Laws! There's a quality here that reminds us of some of our favorite jazzy soul of the 70s – tight, but never too slick – and classy, yet still always wonderfully soulful in the lyrics. Plus, the tunes have some great Braziliany touches that really bring out the west coast vibe in the music – skipping around with a sense of lightness and life that we really love! Beautiful later work by the Dave Brubeck Quartet – an overlooked gem from their 60s Columbia sessions, and an album that features interpretations of tunes written by the great Matt Dennis! Dennis had a way with a tune that often put dark corners in the back of lovely melodies – and this subtle sense of emotion is a perfect foil for the understated talents of Paul Desmond's alto work on the set. Brubeck himself is nice too – less trick-oriented than usual, in a way that lets us focus on the colors of his tone – and drummer Joe Morello and bassist Eugene Wright are in top form, as usual. Peabo Bryson & Roberta FlackBorn To Love ... LP
Capitol, 1983. Near Mint- ... $3.99
The beautiful full scale duets set from Peabo Bryson and Roberta Flack – a record that's no doubt defined by it's biggest hit – but the rest is just as great! Born To Love kicks off with "Tonight I Celebrate My Love For You" – a song that's doubtlessly one of the most inescapable slow dance classics ever – and if its ubiquity overshadows the rest of the record, that's not because it's any less excellent! Peabo's affectionate style is in top form here, and Roberta is such a perfect duet partner – with plenty of lead moments of her own. It definitely feels like a perfectly balanced partnership. The record's got some lovely slow jams on par with the aforementioned pop soul standard, plus some great ones that up the tempo a little bit. Other titles include "Blame It On Me", "Born To Love", "Heaven Above Me", "Comin' Alive", "Can We Find Love Again", "You're Looking Like Love To Me" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

Mr Bongo/Columbia (Japan), 2004. Used ... $18.99
A lovely album from the legendary Terry Callier – another spacious set of gorgeously composed soul for Mr. Bongo! Lookin' Out was largely recorded in the Chicago area, with players that sit in with Terry in his residences at the Green Mill, and the easy, jazzy feel reflects it. What really makes the album special, though, is the return to the mesmerizing, hypnotic style of songs that Terry pioneered in the mid-to-late sixties. Terry's voice and phrasings are as great as ever – and the backings are often acoustic and quite mellow, built around sweet guitar, bass, light strings, synth and horns. This record hearkens to his contemplative records for Cadet as well as, if not more, than his other recent efforts, and you really outta know by now that that's the Terry groove we love most! 17 tracks in all: "Jazz, My Rhythm & Blues", "Midnite Mile", "Africa Now", "Lookin' Out", "Stripper", "Blues For Billie Holiday", "What About Me", and "Faithful". As with both of those groups, there's a great female singer in the lead – the lovely Maria Enrica Lotesoriere, who also wrote all the lyrics – and arrangements are handled by keyboardist Pippo Lombardo, whose sweet keys really hold together the whole thing nicely. Early soul from The Clickettes, The Fashions, and a few other groups that boasted similar lineups at the start of the 60s – nearly all of them featuring lead vocals from 70s soul diva Barbara Jean English! Given the names of the groups, you might be tempted to think of the work as being in the girl group mode – but thanks to English and some strong backup support, there's much more of a soul-based sound here – a great style that comes at the end of 50s group soul, and dovetails nicely with changes in the music during the 60s. The Monastic Trio of the set features Alice on harp and piano – alongside bass from Jimmy Garrison and drums by either Ben Riley or Rashied Ali – both really fluid players who open up nicely in this way that's never to far out, at least in the way that John Coltrane was using rhythms at the time – but which allow Alice to really take the lead as a bold musical visionary of her own! Perhaps most exciting, Pharoah Sanders sits in on one of the album's longest tracks – blowing tenor with a force that's enough to bring back The Great One – but the real charm of the set is Alice's piano work, bubbling out here with a sensitivity that we never would have expected from the harder-edge sessions cut with Coltrane – that new level of spirituality she instantly brought to her own solo sessions. An amazing chapter in the career of British saxophonist Lol Coxhill – two completely wonderful albums recorded for the Ogun label in the mid 70s! The feel here is similar to Coxhill's seminal albums for Virgin a few years before – jazz that's free, but never too "out" – working in a lovely way to explore sound and tone with a sense of joy and whimsy – often making a brief nod to more traditional modes, but very much in its own spirit. An unusual session from the heart of Lou Donaldson's return to Blue Note in the late 60s – a mellower date that stands in strong contrast to his funkier albums of the time! As you might guess from the title, there's a lusher feel going on here – one that has Lou's alto sax augmented by larger backings from Duke Pearson – who manages to score things perfectly with a balance of soul and sophistication. The album's hardly a "Donaldson with strings" date – and instead is done in the more mature mode that Duke was using in some of his own sides from the time, and on work with players like Donald Byrd or Stanley Turrentine. Other players here include Wayne Shorter on tenor, Pepper Adams on baritone, Jerry Dodgion on alto and flute, Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, and Garnett Brown on trombone – plus core rhythms from the trio of McCoy Tyner on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and Al Harewood on drums. Titles include "Sweet Slumber", "The Good Life", "Sweet & Lovely", "Stardust", and "You've Changed" – and the album was recorded in the 60s, it was only first issued in Japan in 1980 – and even then only later in the US! ✨✧ Cornell DupreeNight Fever – The Versatile Sessions (Saturday Night Fever/Shadow Dancing) ... CD
Empire, 1977/1978. Used ... Out Of Stock
Smooth and soulful guitar work from Cornell Dupree – a player who recorded on countless sessions as a studio sideman, but hardly ever got to work as a leader on his own! Both albums here have a full sound that's kind of a step beyond the Kudu/CTI sound of the time – an approach that takes larger orchestrations and uses them as the backdrop for Dupree's work on guitar, often with a fair bit of keyboard support from Mario Sprouse who arranged both albums on the set. The fullness resonates with the funky dancefloor style of David Matthews during the same stretch – a bit commercial at times, but still with plenty of nice instrumental touches – and the CD features all tracks from both albums Dupree recorded for the Versatile label, a total of 14 tracks that include "The Creeper", "Two Doors Down", "Peg", "Lovely Day", "Boogie Nights", "The Closer I Get To You", "On & On", "Hey Girl", and "Shake It Well". Sanctuary/BMG, 2005. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Earth Wind & Fire's most ambitiously orchestrated records of recent years – one that pairs the legendary funk/soul/pop collective with contemporary players such as Will I Am of Black Eyed Peas, Raphael Saadiq, Floetry, Big Boi of Outkast, Sleepy Brown and others! Believe us, we were as skeptical as the rest of you when this project first materialized, so it's really a wonderful surprise to report that it works very well! The album is essentially a modern, uptempo neo soul effort by a group that just happens to be legendary – with clean vocals and horns by the group, and warm production by Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, Will I Am and Raphael Saadiq. It may not be a classic on par with the 70s work, but it's easily the best Earth Wind & Fire album in at least a decade! Tracks include "Lovely People" feat Will I Am, "Show Me The Way" feat Raphael Saadiq, "Work It Out", "Elevated" feat Floetry, "Pass You By", "Pure Gold" and more! LP version features bonus tracks – instrumentals of "Lovely People" and "Elevated". LP, Vinyl record album

A very groovy album from the Brazilian scene at the start of the 70s – a set that's part samba, and part warm harmony vocals – in the mode first explored by Sergio Mendes, Quarteto Em Cy, and other great groups of the 60s! Edgar is Edgar Gianullo – who sings and also handles the arrangements – but the album's got equally strong help from the rest of the group – who harmonize along in the background, alongside the lovely Naneco, the female singer who soars out in the lead! The production is great – very much in the best EMI/Odeon mode, with some of the complexity of work by Os Tres Morais or Antonio Adolfo in the same period – and a young Toquinho is even on the record on guitar. Titles include "Nao Diexo Voce Ir Embora", "Queen Aparecida", "Prologo", "Vou Me Prulitar", "A Primeira Vez", "Alo Helo", "Bambe Lo", and "A Morena Lena". CD

A very unusual set by Don Ellis – and easily one of his most modern recordings ever! The set was done at the same time as Don's other album for Candid, but wasn't issued until many years later – and it's a compelling trio outing that has the trumpet of Ellis in an airy trio with Paul Bley on piano and Steve Swallow on bass. The format here almost hints at the sound of ECM in years to come, although some numbers are a bit more traditionally jazzy – and the colors and tones of Bley's work on piano are a nice backdrop for Ellis' more straightforward blowing on trumpet. Titles include variations on "Sweet & Lovely", "I Love You", "I'll Remember April", "Just One Of Those Things", and "Out Of Nowhere". CD

✨✧ Brian EnoDiscreet Music ... CD
Virgin/EMI (UK), 1975. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A modern minimalist watershed – and maybe one of the first indications that Brian Eno was moving onto higher ideas in his music! The album's an important release on the Obscure series from Island Records – a special imprint that was curated by Eno, as a way of giving showcase to new ideas in British music that were neither free jazz, punk, prog, or any of the styles that were getting more play on the bigger labels! Instead, Eno and Obscure was to the British avant composition world what Lovely or CRI were to the US – although maybe had the bigger role of some of the Columbia Records releases by Philip Glass, Steve Reich, and Terry Riley. The album features the beautiful title piece – "Discreet Music", a long work that relies on a simple system of delay and recall, with slight variations occurring over the space of time, due to slight occasional interference from the composer. Side two features "Three Variations On The Cannon In D Major By Johann Pachelbel" – a great reworking of the baroque music classic – which works along similar lines, taking this very familiar classical theme, and breaking it down into simple components, which are then interwoven and played in repetition, creating a strange little bit of romantic minimalism. That second piece is performed by the Cockpit Ensemble, conducted by Gavin Bryars – who also got some great early releases on the Obscure label too! CD

ECM (Germany), 1993/1994/1996/1999. Used 4 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A pretty wonderful ECM package that puts together 4 records by the Peter Erskine/John Taylor/Palle Danielsson trio made throughout the 1990s – You Never Know, Time Being, As It Is, and Juni – excellent work that holds up incredibly well! It's really lovely, melodic material – done in a more nuanced, lyrical realm than you might expect from the drummer Erskine if you're mostly familiar with him from Weather Report. His intuitive interplay with bassist Palle Daniesson is great, but the pianist John Taylor deserves a ton of credit for the mood here – especially on his own compositions, which are arguably the heart and soul of the trio's work together. Great stuff – and it's all the easier to appreciate how consistent it is when collected here in a 4CD box set! Nice little booklet of notes, too. CD

Lemon (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 3CD ... $29.99
Great work from Fancy – a group who could sport hard rock chops on the guitar, but a very catchy groove upfront – thanks in part to vocals from the lovely Annie Kavanagh! The group have a style that's very well-suited to the emerging glammy generation of UK pop – the guitars are fuzzy, and nicely push to the edges of the mix – while Annie's vocals give everything a sweeter crossover vibe that really sends things home – as do the rhythms, which often have a slight current of funk – thanks to monstrous drums from Les Binks! The elements come together beautifully here on these three key records from the group – the first two studio efforts, the last a surprisingly strong live date recorded at Ronnie Scotts in 1975. 3CD set features 31 tracks in all – which includes bonus tracks – all packaged with a detailed booklet of notes. Titles include "Wild Thing", "Between The Devil & Me", "One Night", "Touch Me", "Something To Remember", "Everybody's Cryin Mercy", "You've Been In Love Too Long", "She's Riding The Rock Machine", "I Was Made To Love Him", "Love For Sale", "The Tour Song", "Stop", and "Sidewinder". Verve, 1964. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the greatest Stan Getz albums ever – even though it wasn't issued until the 90s! The set's a rare unreleased session from 1964 – recorded by Getz with a fresh, free-thinking approach – but abandoned by Verve because they were making so much money with Stan's bossa nova sides of the time! Stan's working here in his great mid 60s quartet with vibist Gary Burton – heard briefly on record on the Getz Au Go Go album, which Verve made mostly a bossa session – but stepping out here with the kind of truly fresh sound that made its first, long-overdue recorded appearance on this set. The whole album has a fluid, lyrical style that's similar to that used by Stan for the wonderful Sweet Rain album – a sense of rhythm and timing that was modern, yet never forgot the melody – clearly inspired by Stan's earlier bossa experiments, but way way past their basics. The blend of vibes and sweetly-blown tenor is amazing – and titles include "6 Nix Quix Flix", "Waltz For A Lovely Wife", "Out Of Focus", "Sweet Sorrow", and "Nobody Else But Me". CD

✨✧ Vince Guaraldi TrioChristmas Time Is Here (vocal, alternate vocal take 5) (green vinyl pressing) (2020 Black Friday Release) ... 7-inch
Fantasy/Craft, 1965. New Copy (pic cover)... Out Of Stock
The first-ever single release of a tune that is maybe one of the most unlikely Holiday songs of all tune – a sad-tinged composition from the original Charlie Brown Christmas score, and one that's maybe more about the melancholy and loneliness that so many feel at the Holidays – that sad mood that Charlie Brown had when walking the wintry streets after feeling rejection from his chums! Yet over the years, the tune has grown to become a holiday favorite – and is presented here in the original vocal version, and a rare alternate take from the sessions – all in a really lovely package. 7-inch, Vinyl record
(Limited edition green vinyl pressing!)

Danny Guglielmi/DenaAdventure In Sound ... LP
Tops, Mid 50s. Very Good- ... $4.99
A compelling little set from Danny Guglielmi – a mix of weird instrumental numbers and some straighter vocal ones that feature singing by the lovely Dena! The album's somewhere between offbeat jazz and bachelor pad territory – and the album features early tape experiments that have Danny playing bass, guitar, piano, and violin – overdubbing each of them in ways that sometimes used odd effects to create some really weird sounds! The album's never totally over the top, but still pretty cool overall – and Dena's vocals are nicely light and sing-song. Titles include "Mosquito Festival", "Na Wa Da Ha", "Jealous", "AEIOU", "It's So Peaceful In The Country", "Hot Schottish", "Firelight Reverie", and "Bullfrog". LP, Vinyl record album
(Black label pressing. Cover has a split on the bottom seam.)

✨✧ Francoise HardyEt Si Je M'En Vais Avant Toi ... LP
Parlophone, 1972. Very Good- ... Out Of Stock
A sweet 70s album from Francoise Hardy – one that still leaves plenty of room for the lovely vocals and acoustic guitar work we loved in her work from the previous decade, but which also adds in some cool contemporary elements too! Much of the album was recorded in London, with backing by a small group led by pianist Tony Cox – who really brings out that special singer-songwriter quality in Hardy's music – that key compositional difference that always set her apart from the start – given that most of her French contemporaries were always singing other peoples' songs. Titles include "Bowm Bowm Bowm", "La Berlue", "Pardon", "L'Eclairage", "Cafard", "Soir", "Bruit De Fond", and "Ou Est-Il". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mexican pressing on Gamma. Cover has lightly bent corners with gloss separation at the bottom.)

✨✧ Francoise HardyFrancoise Hardy (L'Amitie) ... CD
Vogue/Light In The Attic, 1965. New Copy ... $5.99 15.98
Sweet and lovely pop from Francoise Hardy – one of the best early albums she recorded in France, and a sparkling batch of all-original tracks that show that Hardy was as much of a songwriter as she was a singer – something that most of her contemporaries couldn't claim! Francoise has some groovy pop backing on all cuts – but the real strength of the material is from her vocals and guitar work, both of which come off as fragile and confident at the same time – that balance that always made Hardy way more than just the hit singer of the week, and which makes an album like this stand out strongly. The set's got loads of nice tracks – and titles include "Ce Petit Coeur", "L'Amite", "Je T'aime", "Ce N'Est Pas Un Reve", "Les Temps Des Souvenirs", "Dis-Lui Non", and "Tout Ce Qu'on Dit". CD

✨✧ Francoise HardyFrancoise Hardy (La Maison Ou J'Ai Grande) ... CD
Vogue/Light In The Attic, 1966. New Copy ... $5.99 14.98
A very groovy record from the legendary Francoise Hardy – a set that's not only got the lovely lady out front on vocals and acoustic guitar, but one that also features totally great arrangements from Brit maestro Johnny Harris – who gives most of the record a slightly different vibe than some of Hardy's previous sets! Harris has a great ear for the spacious – opening up the sound at the sides, in ways that only seem to enforce Francoise's majesty in the center – with these subtle, but powerful touches that are also carried on by Charles Blackwell on a few cuts too. The whole thing's wonderful – jingle-jangle pop grooves, sweet guitar lines, and really great French vocals over the top – on titles that include "Si C'est Ca", "Je Changerais D'Avis", "Comme", "Tu Es Un Peu A Moi", "Qu'Ils Sont Heureux", and "Il Est Des Choses". ✨✧ Francoise HardyFrancoise Hardy (Le Premiere Bonheur Du Jour) ... CD
Vogue/Light In The Attic, 1963. New Copy ... $5.99 14.98
Really lovely sounds from the young Francoise Hardy – easily one of the coolest, most confident female singers in France at the time! Hardy is neither the emotive style of postwar passionate singers, nor the too-cool style of the left bank – and instead, she's got this way of mixing her own acoustic guitar with lightly lyrical arrangements that never overshadow her role in the lead – far less of the "yeh yeh" style that other singers were using, and which Hardy is too-often considered with. There's a beautifully gentle feel to the record – even though the set features some larger arrangements from Marcel Hendrix – and titles include "J'Aurais Voulu", "Nous Tous", "On Dit De Lui", "Comme Tant D'Autres", "Saurai Je", "Va Pas Prendre Un Tambour", and "Le Premier Bonheur Du Jour".
