Herman's HermitsMrs Brown, You've Got A Lovely Daughter ... LP
MGM, Mid 60s. Sealed Gatefold ... $9.99
A great little soundtrack from Herman's Hermits! The album's notable not only for the great pop vocal numbers – like "Mrs Brown You've Got a Lovely Daughter", "Ooo She's Done It Again", and "There's A Kind Of Hush" – but even more so for 2 great instrumentals: "Daisy Chain I" and "Daisy Chain II". Track 1 features guitar and tabla, rolling together in a wild psychedelic instrumental groove – and track 2 is kind of a variation, also with a groovy mod instrumental groove! LP, Vinyl record album

Jimmy LeeLovely Day ... CD
Society Hill, 2019. New Copy ... $11.99 15.99
A tribute to 70s soul, as you might guess from the Bill Withers title – served up here by Philly vocalist Jimmy Lee, with help from Society Hill producer/arranger Butch Ingram, and instrumentation from the whole Ingram Family! The style's got lots of contemporary elements in the mix – a fair bit of keyboards and rhythm programs, instead of fuller orchestrations – and Jimmy's vocal approach has a bit more of a rough edge than you might be used to hearing on these tracks – but in a way that makes for some nicely different versions of the songs. Titles include "Lovely Day", "I Think I'll Tell Her", "Hold Back The Night", "Pride & Joy", "Maybe Tomorrow", "Zoom", "Just Don't Want To Be Lonely", and "Look Me Up". CD

PiscesLovely Sight ... CD
Numero, Late 60s. Used ... $11.99
Rare late 60s psychedelia from blue collar Rockford, Il – a totally great lost album of pop psych tunefulness from Pisces – who had an incredible knack for experimental sounds that weave in and out of the hallucinatory pop structure! The group centered around core players Jim Krein and Paul DiVenti, and a number of the tunes have fragile, beautiful lead vocals by Linda Bruner, bringing in a bit of Velvets style stark, haunting loveliness – and most of the tracks languished unreleased all this time! This is essentially the first real release of almost all of the tunes, and the best shot at finding an adventurous audience any of it has ever had! We think this stuff would have been hugely influential had it found an audience in its time, hell, it sounds to us like it actually did influence countless groups, even though that's hardly even possible! There's a tunefulness at the center that bears the fruits of the experimental pop sounds that came from benchmark scenes of the era, from Haight Ashbury to Abbey Road – but the found sound ephemera, tape manipulations, and tripped out atmospherics really bring in some far out vibes! An essential discovery from Numero that's as exciting, insistently groovy and eclectic as any of the rock oriented stuff they've dug up to date! Titles include "Dear One", "Children Kiss Your Mother Goodnight", "Motley Mary Ann", "Say Goodbye To John", "The Music Box", "Like A Hole In The Wall Where The Rat Lives", "Elephant Eyes", "Circle Of Time" and more – plus the "extended play" bonus tracks "A Flower For All Seasons" and "In The Summer A Grape Grows". Robert AshleyPrivate Parts ... LP
Lovely, 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99
One of the most important records from composer Robert Ashley – and one that's got a compact approach that helped it circulate a lot more than some of Ashley's larger operas! This piece is very much like those – with Ashley's unique spoken approach – part poetry, part performance art – but the sound is more stripped-down, and in the spirit of the young downtown New York generation of Laurie Anderson and Phillip Glass – served up with great instrumental help from contemporary Blue Gene Tyranny, who plays piano, moog, and clavinet – with some additional tablas for accompaniment! The whole thing was recorded at the important Center For Contemporary Music on the west coast, at Mills College – and is almost a Bay Area answer to some of the more compelling art records from the New York scene. The record is divided into 2 parts – "The Park" and "The Backyard" – both filled with a hypnotic mix of voice, keyboards, and tablas! LP, Vinyl record album

Meredith MonkKey ... CD
Lovely, 1971. New Copy ... $11.99
Haunting early work by Meredith Monk – recorded in 1971, and performed by a small group of vocalists – all working with Monk in an incredible presentation of her new ideas for voice! The music is already at a place that's light years ahead of most – clearly marking the singer as one of the most visionary artists of her generation – as important as Philip Glass or Steve Reich – even though the more personal presentation of Monk's music never got her into the concert hall repertoire as much as her contemporaries. Meredith plays electric organ, jews harp, and sings – and the piece is one long work that covers the entire album. CD

Enrique RodriguezLo Que Es (red vinyl pressing) ... LP
Extra Lovely, 2019. New Copy ... $19.99 20.00
A really beautiful record by young Chilean pianist Enrique Rodriguez – a set that's got little more going on than piano and keyboards, but which really makes the most of those elements! Rodriguez plays in a style that's not entirely jazz – maybe more moody instrumentals with a slight bit of rhythm in the background, but always at a gentle pace – so that the tunes have a flow that's really driven by the keys, which sound equally great, whether acoustic or electric! Some tunes glow with a soundtrack theme style, others have a deeper soul vibe – and titles include "Chao", "Estamos Bien Aqui", "Una Pared", "Mantener El Arriba", "Ambos", "Lograr Decidirnos", "Lo Que Somos", and "Ni Siquiera Se Si Quiero Encontrarte". Blue Gene TyrannyOut Of The Blue ... CD
Lovely/Unseen Worlds, 1977. New Copy ... $10.99 14.99
A compelling first album from avant composer Blue Gene Tyranny – one of the first efforts from the excellent art label Lovely Music, and a wonderful example of the left-field experimentation going on away from the punk and more familiar scenes of the time! The first half of the record is an attempt to open up more conventional pop – but from our later perspective, the results sound a bit more like more creative work of the mainstream – although definitely with a more offbeat feel, particularly on the one instrumental jamming number. But the real standout here is the side-long track "A Letter From Home" – done for a narrator and "sampling chorus" – a really cool piece that sets the scene for Laurie Anderson, Giorno Poetry Systems, and all the other great art records that we remember so fondly from the 80s! This piece alone is worth the price of the record – but you also get the shorter cuts "For David K", "Leading A Double Life", and "Next Time Might Be Your Time". CD

Stunt (Denmark), 2015. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A lovely little Brazilian-styled set from tenorist Harry Allen – and one that features vocals and guitar from the wonderful Joyce! Almost all titles are originals by Antonio Carlos Jobim – as you'd guess from the title – but Allen's deep-voiced approach moves them into very different territory than the usual bossa remakes – and reminds us just how great Jobim's compositions can be as vehicles for jazz improvisation. In addition to guitar from Joyce, the rest of the quintet features Helio Alves on piano, Rodolfo Stroeter on bass, and Tutty Moreno on drums – who further underscore the Brazilian elements – and Joyce sings on three of the album's eleven tracks, always adding a lot when she does! Titles include "Captain Bacardi", "Chovendo Na Roseira", "Theme For Jobim", "Angela", "Voce Vai Ver", "Tema Jazz", "Mojave", and "Antigua". CD

Warm wonderful work from America – keenly collaborating here with producer George Martin, who helps them take their already-great sound into a whole new dimension! Martin's got a wonderfully smooth touch on his studio work here – cool, compressed, and just right for the group's harmony approach – yet never in ways that are slick or sleepy at all! If anything, there might even be more intimacy to these songs than on the group's initial records – and the best vocal and acoustic touches are still preserved nicely amidst some larger lovely arrangements from George. AquarianaAquariana ... LP
Drag City, 1974. Near Mint- ... $4.99
An incredible side chapter of the enigmatic Source Family – the ethereal singer Aquariana – an artist with a voice as lovely as her name! Some tunes are spare and simple – with just a bit of piano and this fragile little voice – while others are a bit more righteous, with Aquariana singing like some of the best underground folk artists of the time – but even more expressively, and with a range that's really mindblowing. Tunes are often quite narrative in structure, and some of the more pointed numbers have this personal appeal that almost feels like the best material from the big singer/songwriter generation – had it received fuller arrangements and production. Limited LP issue features all these lost gems, and some nice notes on the lady too – and titles include "One Love", "Forget About The Past", "Ancient One", "Rise Oh Mighty Soul", "Awaken Us", "Come Forth", "Walking Together", and "Oh My Love". ✨✧ Ars NovaFields Of People – The Elektra & Atlantic Recordings 1968/1969 (Ars Nova/Sunshine & Shadows) ... CD
Esoteric (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 2CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A pair of great albums from the overlooked Ars Nova – back to back in a single set! First up is the 1968 self-titled Ars Nova – a wonderful little set of post-folk rock – with lots of lovely baroque touches! Ars Nova were really short-lived group – known for only two rare records – but they've got a sound that perfectly sums up a generation! There's a wonderful LA late 60s sound here – somewhere between Love and The Byrds, with the baroque touches of the former and the best country influences of the latter – all wrapped up in earnest, honest songwriting that makes even the ambitious moments come across with surprising charm. A true lost relic, and the kind of record that should be in any late 60s cannon! Titles include "Album In Your Mind", "Pavan For My Lady", "General Clover Ends A War", "And How Am I To Know", "Fields Of People", "Automatic Love", and "Song To The City". Sunshine & Shadows is the second tripped-out set from Ars Nova – an under-remembered late 60s group who had a great talent for blending together a range of different styles! At some level, Ars Nova share qualities with some of the harder-jamming groups of their time – but they've also got a sound that expands to bring in folk, blues, jazz, and more baroque elements – played by the group with a lineup that includes some nice work on trumpet by Jimmy Owens, who at this point was a core member of the combo. Brooks Arthur handled the overall music direction, with a quality that recalls some of his work on Verve – and the album features the wonderful bossa-styled groover "Walk On The Sand", a romping soul jazz take on Jimmy Owens' "You Had Better Listen", and the cuts "Rubbish", "Please Don't Go Now", "Temporary Serenade", "She Promises Everything", and "Round Once Again". Ashford & SimpsonGimme Something Real ... LP
Warner, 1973. Very Good Gatefold ... $1.99
One of our favorite albums from this legendary duo – Nick Ashford & Valerie Simpson's first album for Warner Brothers, and compared to the numbers moved by biggest hits, you could call this one a hidden gem – filled with near perfect mellow soul jams and more sweetly soaring groovers alike! There are moments that steer it into more of a rootsy style, kind of an intimate take on the LA soul sound with easy going, elegant backings and production that's nicely tailored to voices, particular Valerie's lovely vocals – but those lead to bigger emotional payoff that hit you deep! This is an underappreciated early effort from the duo as a headlining act, and finds them setting up to change the sound of R&B to come! Titles include "Can You Make It Brother", "Bend Me", "Gimme Something Real", "I'm Determined", "I Need Your Light", "Anywhere", and "Have You Ever Tried It". LP, Vinyl record album

Realeyes (Japan), 1999. Used 2 CDs ... $9.99
Beautiful work from the lovely Japanese singer Bird! Despite a light-sounding name, Bird's one of Japan's most soulful artists – and we'd rank her right up there with Monday Michiru for richness of talent, and strength in interpreting a song. The big difference is that she sings mostly in Japanese – so that you can't hear her lyrics as well if you're an Americano like us – but thanks to some killer funky backgrounds by Shinichi Osawa of Mondo Grosso, the album grooves like a monster, and you don't even care what Bird's saying! Really great stuff – with that strident soulful feel of the best Japanese work of the past few years, and a rock solid album all the way through, especially if you dug the MG4 album by Mondo Grosso. Music Box (France), Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $26.99
Some of the most famous 70s soundtrack work of French jazz musician Claude Bolling – served up here in a double-length CD that's overflowing with bonus material too! First up is the original score for Borsalino – a really lovely little soundtrack for the French film that starred Alain Delon and Jean-Paul Belmondo as gangsters in the roaring 20s – set to backings by pianist Claude Bolling that's balanced nicely between the styles of his trad jazz work on record, and some of the warmer thematic modes of the French soundtrack theme at the time! Bolling's piano is always very heavy in the mix – sometimes played with the rhythmic quality of a boogie woogie musician, sometimes more spaciously soundtracked – and augmented by just the right touches of strings. The record was a big Euro hit in the 70s, and still holds up well – and this version features 36 tracks from the film – far more than the original album! Borsalino & Co is the sequel – and features a score that takes off nicely from the first – still echoes of Bolling's piano on many tracks, but also fuller, more dramatic orchestrations at times – and maybe a wider range of jazz instrumentation too. CD features 15 tracks from Borsalino & Co – plus 6 more bonus tracks that include vocal songs by Michele Bach and Le Gang, a big band version of the theme, and a "Borsalino Medley" too. CD

The lovely and soulful Hadda Brooks was one of the great talents on the LA scene of the postwar years – a vocalist and pianist with a style that blended blues and jazz, in a manner that was like some of her male counterparts on the scene at the time, such as Nat King Cole or Charles Brown. Brooks' fame in the city was great, and even led to a few famous film appearances – but the sophistication of her work often kept it from cracking the charts as strongly as other R&B stars at the time. This excellent album is really the only one she ever issued – a strong set of tunes recorded for Crown/Modern in the 50s. Titles include "My Ideal", "Take Me", "The Thrill Is Gone", "How Do You Speak To An Angel", "My Romance", and "Dream". CD

The long-overdue issue of material that was originally recorded for the film Kes back in 1969 – short and lovely numbers arranged and composed by Brit easy talent John Cameron! Cameron's best known for his work in more groove-oriented formats – but this soundtrack is something completely different, and equally great – a set of spare and compelling tunes played by a small combo that includes British jazz players Harold McNair, Ronnie Ross, David Snell, Tony Carr, and Danny Moss. The overall album is quite short, but it features a stunning range of sounds, tones, and colors – with a strong focus especially on the flute work of McNair, easily one of the greatest London players of his generation, and sort of England's answer to Roland Kirk. Titles include "Billy's Paper Round", "Billy Sees Kes In The Tower", "Kes First Flight", "Training Kes", "Billy Asleep In The Boiler Room", "Burying Kes", and "Foreboding". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ CardinalsCardinals Featuring Ernie Warren – Their Complete Recordings ... CD
Southern Routes, 1950s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The first-ever set we've seen dedicated to the overlooked doo wop genius of The Cardinals – a group that recorded for Atlantic Records in the same generation as The Drifters and The Clovers, but never received a full LP treatment by the label! We've always felt that lack is one of the reasons why The Cardinals never got the later exposure they deserved – because, as you'll hear here, they're a tremendous quintet – with especially sublime harmonies on the mellower numbers, which they make shine and sparkle in a way that rivals the early 50s best of The Orioles! Yet they're also pretty great on the groovers – able to move upbeat, but still retain the warmth of their vocals – really making them a perfect fit for Atlantic Records in the pre-soul years. The set includes all their recordings, and even includes a few rare demo tracks too – and titles include "I Won't Make You Cry Anymore", "The Bump", "Lovely Girl", "For A While", "Offshore", "Come Back My Love", "Under A Blanket Of Blue", "Wheel Of Fortune", "The Door Is Still Open", "I'll Always Love You", "The End Of The Story", and "One Love". Columbia/Legacy, 1967. New Copy ... $4.99 7.99
Johnny first album collaboration with his soon-to-be wife June Carter, and it's a nice one! Carryin' On has it's share of sweet, lovely moments shared by the two, but also has a lot more cool 60s oddball touches than one would expect. The couple cover Dylan's "It Ain't Me Babe" and two Ray Charles tunes, "I Got A Woman" and "What I Say". All three sound pretty strange coming out of hard-nosed Johnny, and prove to be quite fun and endearing, and very indicative of the freedom he had at Columbia to do whatever the heck he wanted. Other tracks include "Shantytown", "Pack Up Your Sorrows", "Jackson", "What A Good Thing We Had", and "No, No, No". Includes two bonus tracks from the sessions, and new liner notes by old pal Carl Perkins. CD

The session has Eddie working with an Italian group that includes Sante Palumbo on piano and electric piano, Julius Farmer on bass, and Grady Tate on drums – all in a mellow, relaxed way that really lets Daniels stretch out on his solos – hitting notes with a bit more feeling and soul than we remember in some of his smoother sets over the years. A long-overdue collection of work by this sublime Ohio soul group of the 60s – a trio of lovely ladies with a really tremendous sound! The Charmaines – also known as Gigi & The Charmaines – are hardly the girl group cliche you might think from their sweet name and the image on the cover – and on most of the numbers here, they're hard-rolling at a pace that's somewhere between the best Detroit Northern Soul of the time, and some of the sweeter female soul that was coming out of Chicago at the end of the 60s. This package focuses mostly on the group's Fraternity Records singles, including a few unissued tracks – and titles include "GI Joe (first version)", "I Idolize You", "On The Wagon", "Goodbye Baby Goodbye", "Rockin Pneumonia", "Rockin Old Man", "Where Is The Boy Tonight", "All You Gotta Do", and "What Kind Of Girl" – plus their work with Lonnie Mack on "Money" and "Sticks & Stones", and with Carl Edmondson on "Baby Please Don't Go". KS Chithra with IlaiyaraajaKS Chithra with Ilaiyaraaja ... LP
Finders Keepers (UK), Mid 80s-Early 90s. Near Mint- 2LP ... $24.99
Sprightly, modernist Kollywood pop from the mid 80s – beautifully sung by KS Chithra, with the boundary-busting sounds and arrangements of Ilaiyaraaja! The songs are wonderful, time-honored regional pop sounds – traditionally-constructed songs blended with some 80s studio touches – loops, multi-tracking, drum machines, synths and electric keys – which all then fuse seamlessly with the haunting strings, percussion and achingly beautiful female vocals you'd expect from Kollywood – mixed with some madder, pulpy bits too! KS Chithra is as lovely of a vocalist as Asha Bhosle and other more internationally known singers, adding the warmth and depth of the songs collected here. We might even love this more than the earlier Ilaiyaraaja work Finders Keepers put together for the Solla Solla compilation – we didn't expect this to surpass it! Wonderful! Includes "Indha Vennila", "Yaaro Sonnaangalaam", "Vandadhe", "Oh My Love", "Pon Maaney", "Kankaliley", "Rathiri Thookkam", "Velli Kizhamai", "Oru Pooncholai", "Nethu Oruthara", "Hey Maina" and more. One of the coolest 70s soundtracks from the great Stelvio Cipriani – served up here with a huge amount of bonus tracks too! The music here was scored for a Mario Bava horror film, but it often has a quality that's more lean and lovely overall – that current of sex that we always love in Ciprani's best work, and which made him a key force for transforming the Italian bossa and jazz soundtrack style of the 60s into something completely new for the 70s! There's a lot of sweet keyboards in the music – as you'd expect from Stelvio – but there's also some cool rootsy percussion, which creates a nice juxtaposition between acoustic and electric, especially as things get a bit spookier near the end. Titles include "Ultimo Atto", "Solitudine Di Simone", "Teenagers Cha Cha Cha", "Due Amanti", "Evelyn Theme", "Shake Giradischi", and "Un Cadavere Nel Lago". Lots of heavy love here – a wonderful sense of rapport between the great tenorist Al Cohn and piano genius Jimmy Rowles! Both musicians were still recording heavily at the time of this album, but the record seems to capture them in a really special space that still stands strongly on its own – a mode that's much more relaxes than some of the Pablo Records sessions of the time, and which has Cohn in an especially striking mode – really hitting these openly-blown, often-angular lines that are dripping with soul – more heart and feeling than we might normally expect from him, matched equally by Jimmy Rowles' wonderful phrasing on piano – very much here at the top shelf level he delivered with Stan Getz on The Peacocks album. Titles include "I Hadn't Anyone Till You", "Bar Talk", "These Foolish Things", "Them There Eyes", and "Sweet & Lovely". Features the bonus track "For All We Know". CD

✨✧ Mike CooperOh Really/Do I Know You/Trout Steel/Places I Know/Machine Gun Co (plus bonus tracks) (3CD set) ... CD
Dawn/BGO (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 3CD ... $16.99
An amazing legacy in music from Mike Cooper – a British musician who started out in the world of folk blues, but never ended up moving towards some of the rockish modes of his contemporaries – instead finding his very own sort of special space in the freedom allowed by the Dawn Records label! The set begins with the very spare Oh Really – a set that has Mike Cooper mostly on guitar and vocals, in a style that's part Piedmont, part Delta blues – but also given a more folksy spin, and graced with Cooper's unusual vocals – almost making the whole thing feel like a spare acoustic version of Canned Heat territory – with titles that include "Maggie Campbell", "Saturday Blues", "Electric Chair", "Crow Jane", and "You're Gonna Be Sorry". Do I Know you is a record that follows up with a sound that's maybe a bit fuller than Mike Cooper's debut, but still relatively spare – with Mike on acoustic guitar and slide guitar, Harry Miller on bass (really great bass, by the way!), and Poor Little Anne on a bit of vocals. Miller brings these deep tones to the record that really transform things – and titles include "Do I Know You", "Start Of A Journey", "First Song", "Theme In C", and "The Link". Trout Steel is a beautiful set from the British scene at the start of the 70s – a record that's got a fairly folksy tone, but lots of jazzy currents as well! The set was issued on the seminal Dawn Records label – and really shows that imprint's commitment to the left side of the spectrum – as Mike Cooper's vocals and acoustic guitar come into play with more guitar from Stefan Grossman – plus alto sax from Mike Osborne, tenor and soprano from Alan Skidmore, piano from John Taylor, and bass from the late Harry Miller – all key players on the UK avant jazz scene of the time! The mix of these players with Cooper's core inspiration is not unlike some of the most progressive material coming from Island Records – or, even better, the special jazzy moments on records by Tim Buckley or Tim Hardin – company that Cooper could very easily keep, given the strength of his songwriting. Titles include "Don't Talk Too Fast", "On My Way", "Hope You See", "Weeping Rose", "Trout Steel", "I've Got Mine", "That's How", and "Pharoah's March". Places I Know blends Cooper's acoustic guitar and rootsy vocals with some very compelling arrangements from Mike Gibbs – the British jazz talent who was already known for his larger ensemble creations at the time, but who works here in these really subtle ways – to inflect Cooper's core inspirations with just some slight instrumental colors, tones, and phrases on most numbers – while Cooper brings in the core Machine Gun Co group on a few more. The result is a record that's way more than familiar folk – and arguably a lot hipper than most of the British acid folk of the time, too – on titles that include "Night Journey", "Paper & Smoke", "Country Water", "Time To Time", "Goodbye Blues Goodbye", and "Places I Know". The Machine Gun Co album is a partner record to Places I Know – recorded in the same sessions, but with tracks that are longer, and even more openly expressive – all with backings from the sweet Machine Gun Co quartet, a group with some especially nice electric piano from Alan Cook! Heavy use of that instrument really works against some of the folksier elements in Cooper's music – with these blocks of warm sound and color that really illuminate the tunes, and almost unlock a new level in the vocals. Cooper plays a bit of electric guitar at times – and titles include "So Glad That I Found You", "Lady Anne", "Midnight Words", and "Song For Abigail". CD also features songs from singles – "Your Lovely Ways (parts 1 & 2)", "Time In Hand", and "Schaabisch Hall". CD

Things here are every bit as tripped out as on some of Lula's other albums from years before – trippily poetic, occasionally folksy, and sometimes touched with heavier electric moments that really offset the gentler, more organic moments. Genius in one of its purest forms! Paul Desmond's alto sax was honed to perfection by the time of these recordings – worked out through fame in the Dave Brubeck Quartet years of the late 50s and early 60s, but also relaxed in a confidence that makes these sides completely majestic, and utterly fantastic! Desmond's tone and approach are languid – but in a way that's incredibly compelling: notes just floating out of the horn, almost effortlessly, seeming not to come from Desmond himself, but to him, gathered together by his warmth and good wit, honed in further by the spare and gentle guitar work of the great Jim Hall. This package is the finest tribute we could think of to their brilliant work together – a wonderfully-done 5CD set, with a lovely slipcase and book, done in a way that retains the structure of the original albums, yet also adds in bonus tracks. A beautiful little record from Durutti Column – and a bit of a departure for Vini Reilly, given that there's more of an overall concept to the album! The set's an all-instrumental one – a bit different than his blue-tinged vocal work of the first few Factory albums – but it's still awash in that wonderful guitar style of his – airy and atmospheric, but surprisingly pointed, too – really one of the strongest instrumental voices to emerge from the British post-punk scene, even if it was one of the most subtle! The music adds in piano, bits of strings, oboe, and other elements – really opening up the incredibly lovely melodies of the songs – almost in a Penguin Cafe Orchestra mode, which might be a good comparison to the spirit of the set. This beautiful version features 4 CDs' worth of material – bonus tracks on the main album, including "All That Love & Maths Can Do", "Snowflakes", "The Sea Wall", "Profondeurs Des Eaux Des Laques", "Duet", and "Estoril A Noite". ✨✧ Earth Wind & FireIllumination (with bonus tracks) ... LP
Sanctuary/BMG, 2005. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Earth Wind & Fire's most ambitiously orchestrated records of recent years – one that pairs the legendary funk/soul/pop collective with contemporary players such as Will I Am of Black Eyed Peas, Raphael Saadiq, Floetry, Big Boi of Outkast, Sleepy Brown and others! Believe us, we were as skeptical as the rest of you when this project first materialized, so it's really a wonderful surprise to report that it works very well! The album is essentially a modern, uptempo neo soul effort by a group that just happens to be legendary – with clean vocals and horns by the group, and warm production by Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, Will I Am and Raphael Saadiq. It may not be a classic on par with the 70s work, but it's easily the best Earth Wind & Fire album in at least a decade! Tracks include "Lovely People" feat Will I Am, "Show Me The Way" feat Raphael Saadiq, "Work It Out", "Elevated" feat Floetry, "Pass You By", "Pure Gold" and more! LP version features bonus tracks – instrumentals of "Lovely People" and "Elevated". LP, Vinyl record album

Don EllisOut Of Nowhere ... CD
Candid (UK), 1961. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A very unusual set by Don Ellis – and easily one of his most modern recordings ever! The set was done at the same time as Don's other album for Candid, but wasn't issued until many years later – and it's a compelling trio outing that has the trumpet of Ellis in an airy trio with Paul Bley on piano and Steve Swallow on bass. The format here almost hints at the sound of ECM in years to come, although some numbers are a bit more traditionally jazzy – and the colors and tones of Bley's work on piano are a nice backdrop for Ellis' more straightforward blowing on trumpet. Titles include variations on "Sweet & Lovely", "I Love You", "I'll Remember April", "Just One Of Those Things", and "Out Of Nowhere". CD

Brian EnoDiscreet Music (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Obscure/Astralwerks, 1975. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.99
A modern minimalist watershed – and maybe one of the first indications that Brian Eno was moving onto higher ideas in his music! The album's an important release on the Obscure series from Island Records – a special imprint that was curated by Eno, as a way of giving showcase to new ideas in British music that were neither free jazz, punk, prog, or any of the styles that were getting more play on the bigger labels! Instead, Eno and Obscure was to the British avant composition world what Lovely or CRI were to the US – although maybe had the bigger role of some of the Columbia Records releases by Philip Glass, Steve Reich, and Terry Riley. The album features the beautiful title piece – "Discreet Music", a long work that relies on a simple system of delay and recall, with slight variations occurring over the space of time, due to slight occasional interference from the composer. Side two features "Three Variations On The Cannon In D Major By Johann Pachelbel" – a great reworking of the baroque music classic – which works along similar lines, taking this very familiar classical theme, and breaking it down into simple components, which are then interwoven and played in repetition, creating a strange little bit of romantic minimalism. That second piece is performed by the Cockpit Ensemble, conducted by Gavin Bryars – who also got some great early releases on the Obscure label too! LP, Vinyl record album

A seminal set from Everything But The Girl – even if the record has them leaving behind everything that made them so unique back in the 80s! Gone are the jazzy riffs and retro elements – and instead, the lovely vocals and impeccable songwriting of Tracey Thorn are tied to more contemporary beats and rhythms – the real flowering of Ben Watt as a producer, as he mixes together spare, subtle elements into grooves that turn out to fit the EBTG aesthetic every bit as well as before! Titles include "The Heart Remains A Child", "Single", "Wrong", "Before Today", "Good Cop Bad Cop", "Mirrorball", and "Big Deal". LP, Vinyl record album

An album as lovely as its title, and John Fahey's 8th record – mostly solo guitar, but with guest drums and bass on 2 cuts – "March For Martin Luther King" and "Dance of The Inhabitants Of The Invisible City Of Bladensburg". The sound is extremely magical – introspective, yet far-seeing – with that fragile sense of being in the world that's made Fahey's work endure far longer than that of most of his contemporaries. Soundway (UK), 2016. New Copy ... $22.99
The title certainly gets it right – as there's a strongly unified sense of spirit here from Family Atlantica – even more so than on their debut album! As before, there's a range of global elements moving through the mix – currents of South American and African styles, given a slightly more contemporary European presentation – but somehow these guys have really found a way to put everything together with an even tighter, more cohesive sound – one that expands through jazzy solo work on tenor, alto, trumpet, and trombone – and which really draws a lot from the wide range of percussion and other instrumentation used by co-leader Jack Yglesias. The lovely Luzmira Zerpa handles most of the vocals – and some percussion too – and the album also features guest appearances from 70s legends Orlando Julius on tenor and Marshal Allen on alto sax. Titles include "Baiao Infinito", "Near The Ocean", "Efik", "Cosmic Unity", "Canto De Pilon", "El Rio", "Cacao", "Okoroba", and "Neti Neti". LP, Vinyl record album

Flying Lotus wastes little time seizing the senses on Cosmogramma – bursting with thick, bubbling wave of electronics that float off just as quickly and make room for hypnic harp and buzzing eastern string sounds – and gets more adventurous and unrelenting from there! We've been on board with FL all along and Cosmogramma might be the best ride yet – it's bigger, spacier and more instantly gratifying than earlier efforts – mixing bright, buoyant electronics, waves of textured atmospherics, strings that range from lovely to spooky and other live instrumentation. 17 tracks in all: "Clock Catcher", "Nose Art", "Zodiac S**t", "Recoiled", "Dance Of The Pseudo Nymph", "German Haircut", "Do The Astral Plane", "Galaxy In Janaki" and more. A beautiful project from pianist Billy Foster – part of a long tradition of jazz mass records that have been popping up from the underground from the late 50s onwards – and maybe one of the best we've heard so far! The setting is spare – really just a trio outing by Billy's group, but with vocals by Renee Miles-Foster, whose lovely voice really shapes some of the best tunes here – tracks that are maybe a bit in the gospel tradition in terms of subject matter, but which also have a warmer jazz vocal approach overall. All music and new lyrics are by Billy – and titles include "He's Always Been There", "Today Is A Day", "Music Is", "God & Savior", "Joyful Noise", "His Grace", and "Just Hold My Hand". CD

Sommor (Spain), 1970. New Copy (reissue)... $25.99
One of those records you hear and say "man, why wasn't this a classic?" – a tremendously well-conceived bit of British psychedelia from the end of the 60s, served up in a clear and focused style that holds up beautifully well over the years! There's a lean, no-nonsense quality here that really makes the record sparkle – a sense of a tune that makes each different number on the record come up with new delight – showing that The Fox were hardly just some happy accident in the studio, but a really great band that could've, should've gone onto much greater fame. But rather than ponder the might-haves in the group's career, let us just say that we're plenty darn happy to have this great LP – a real standout, even from a tremendous time in modern music. Inner City, 1976. Sealed ... $6.99
One of the coolest, grooviest albums we've ever heard from vibist Dave Friedman – a set that really lives up to the promise we sometimes expect from other records of his, but never find this clearly! Friedman plays both marimba and vibes – the latter with this bold, chromatic quality that comes through even in gentle moments – a bit like Gary Burton, but turned towards much more varied ends here – as the songs really shift in mood and approach, keeping things fresh throughout! Vocalist Rimona Francis lends her lovely wordless singing style to about half the album's tracks – but in a way that's more like an instrument than a conventional jazz singer – and the group also features surprisingly great acoustic piano work from Pat Rebillot (who we mostly know from keyboard sessions), plus Harvie Swartz on bass and Bruce Ditmas on drums. Blue Note, 1983. Used ... $8.99
A lovely later recording from Stan Getz – very spare and spacious, and recorded with a casual approach that's quite striking, and really fresh! The album features Stan playing alongside pianist Albert Dailey – with no other rhythm accompaniment, just piano and tenor sax. The tunes are mostly familiar numbers, played in a relaxed, improvised mode that makes the whole thing feel like you're getting a lucky glimpse of Stan and Albert playing together in an after hours session or rehearsal. There's a bit of roughness in the recording, but given the depth of soul and color from both players, that quality also emerges as an honest humanity that only serves to make the recording more compelling! Verve, 1963. Very Good ... Just Sold Out!
A landmark record – both in 60s jazz and bossa nova – and a set that not only bridged worlds of music, but set the tone for so many other albums to come! By the time of this 1964 set, Stan Getz had already issued a few bossa nova experiments on Verve – but this pairing with guitarist Joao Gilberto really pushed the format over the top – thanks in part to the vocals of Gilberto's lovely wife Astrud, who'd never sung in the studio before this famous recording! The record created a sound that was copied endlessly, and which catapulted Astrud to unbelievable fame worldwide – even though she was only included in the session at the last minute, because Joao couldn't sing in English – and the mix of Stan's tenor and Joao's guitar is wonderful – and backed throughout by this light, lilting bossa nova rhythms. Verve, 1966. Sealed ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Kind of a dream combination in one little album – especially if you dig breezy bossa from the 60s! Back in 1966, Verve Records got the great idea of teaming up its (then) biggest Brazilian imports – vocalist Astrud Gilberto and organist Walter Wanderley – both of whom were selling plenty at the time! Astrud's lovely vocals are matched beautifully with the lean, rhythmic bossa grooves of Wanderley's trio – and the result is a record that's near-perfect in execution. Most of the tracks are quite short, as is the record itself – but it's a perfectly concentrated dose of the Verve bossa sound at its best, with tracks that include "Portuguese Washerwoman", "Tu Meu Delirio", "A Certain Smile", "Call Me", "Here's That Rainy Day", "A Certain Sadness", "It's A Lovely Day Today", and a vocal version of Wanderley's big hit "Summer Samba", redone here as "So Nice"! Odeon/El (UK), 1963. New Copy ... $12.99
One of Joao Gilberto's first-ever albums – filled with incredibly beautiful bossa material that captures the vocals and guitar of Gilberto at their fragile early best – backed by sublime arrangements from Antonio Carlos Jobim and Walter Wanderley! The setting is perfect, and the sound is amazing – that incredible stripped-down breathy quality that made Joao a legend right out of the box – which so many others tried to copy over the years, but never got this right. A beautiful relic from the past – with a lovely image of Joao's young face on the cover – and titles that include "O Barquinho", "O Amor Em Paz", "Voce e Eu", "Coisa Mas Linda", and "Presente De Natal". CD features bonus tracks by some of Gilberto's contemporaries – including "O Barquinho" by Maysa, "Coisa Mais Linda" by Carlos Lyra, "Manha De Carnaval" by Sylvia Telles, "Bim Bom" by Oscar Castro Neves, and "O Samba Da Minha Terra" by Lucio Alves. Karel GoeyvaertsKarel Goeyvaerts ... LP
Cacophonic (UK), 1973/1977. New Copy ... $22.99
Beautiful sounds from Karel Goeyvaeters – a Dutch minimalist with a really wonderful sense of tone! The album features two long pieces, both from the mid 70s – each using a variety of sounds in cyclical fashion – in ways that recall some of the best Terry Riley material of the time – even though some of the construction also echoes the approach of Philip Glass or Steve Reich! Karel really likes things to unfold in a subtle, sensitive way – and the tones move along in these patterns that are sometimes imperceptible, sometimes more striking – occasionally with a bit of dissonance, but often with these really lovely little sounds. Side one features "Pour Que Les Fruits Murissent Cet Ete" – and side two features "Op Acht Paarden Wedden". LP, Vinyl record album

Wardell GrayWardell Gray Memorial Vol 2 ... LP
Prestige, Early 50s. Sealed ... $9.99
One of the best-ever documents of the young genius of tenorist Wardell Gray – exactly the kind of music that shows why he was one of the biggest and best of the bop saxophonists – before he was taken away from us all too soon! The material here was originally issued on 78s or 45s, and comes together as a great full length representation of Gray at his best – and on this second volume, Wardell works in some bigger groups on great long tracks with a nicely jamming feel! Players include Sonny Criss on alto, Art Farmer and Clark Terry on trumpet, Dexter Gordon on tenor, and Hampton Hawes on piano – and titles include "Move", "Scrapple From The Apple", "Lover", "Farmer's Market", "April Skies", "Jackie", and "Sweet & Lovely". Juliette GrecoLive In Paris 1956 to 1961 ... CD
Fremeaux & Associates (France), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $14.99 18.99
Rare live work from the lovely Juliette Greco – recorded right during the height of her career, when her hip style of chanson was really transforming the sound of French music from the left bank scene! The tracks here are all very well-recorded, and feature Juliette working with a small combo that includes piano, guitar, and musette – a nicely lean vibe that really offers up a different spirit of the songs than her studio recordings – as does the relaxed, completely charming stage presence of Greco. Titles include "T'En As", "Jolie Mome", "Le Guinche", "Coin De Rue", "La Chanson De Margaret", "Je Prends Les Choses Du Bon Cote", "La Cuisine", and "On N'Oublie Rien". CD
