✨✧ Lionel HamptonJazz In Paris – Lionel Hampton & His French New Sound Vol 2 ... CD
Universal (France), 1955. Used ... Out Of Stock
Paris was always a great city for Lionel Hampton – but it seemed like in the mid 50s, it was also a place where he cut some of his best work, too! The French New Sound pair of albums are both classics in Hamp's book – records that take off from the looser, longer-form style that he'd been hitting with his Verve recordings of the early 50s – yet which also retain some of the tighter, fuller elements of his famous large ensembles. Players on the records are great – a lineup that includes travelling American jazz greats like Benny Bailey and Nat Adderley on trumpets, and a young David Amram on French Horn – plus crack Parisian players who include Sacha Distel on guitar, Rene Urtreger on piano, and Guy Pederson on bass. The tracks are simple jamming numbers – long and open-ended, in the mode of some of Hamp's very popular live work at the time, and the vibes are right out front – hard-edged, with that soulful sound that Hamp pioneered on the instrument – and the other players are given very ample room to solo. Tracks on this second volume include "All The Things You Are", "Night & Day", and "Red Ribbon". CD
(Out of print and sealed.)

✨✧ Lionel HamptonPlease Sunrise/Stop! I Don't Need No Sympathy ... CD
Brunswick/Edsel (UK), 1973/1974. Used ... Out Of Stock
The classic jazz vibes of Lionel Hampton meets the soulful arrangements of the Chicago Brunswick studios – and the result is a great batch of funky instrumentals that have a similar sound to some of the classic Cadet albums from the same time! Willie Henderson and Tom Tom Washington did most of the arrangements – and many tracks are originals written by Eugene Record, with that great loping Chisoul groove that he was perfecting at the time. Titles include "Please Sunrise", "Soulful Autumn", "It Must Be Love", "I Did It", "I Wake Up Crying", "I Wish It Was me", "It's Time For Peace", "This Must Be The Place For Love", "Turn Back The Hands Of Time", and "I Call It Trouble". Tasty stuff, and tight Chicago soul grooves! CD

✨✧ Lionel HamptonStar Dust ... CD
Decca (Japan), 1947. Used ... Out Of Stock
A hard-swinging live set from Hamp – recorded in the late 40s in Pasadena, and featuring some of the group's trademark "over the top" performances! The tunes are all pretty standard stuff – "Stardust", "One O'Clock Jump", "The Man I Love", and "Lady Be Good" – but Hamp and crew really work them through – swinging things hard and really letting go on the solos – all of which come through very strongly with all the added space on the longer tunes on the set! Hamp only plays vibes on one number, but that's ok with us – since the other players include Willie Smith, Barney Kessel, Charlie Shavers, and the great Corky Cochran on tenor sax! CD

✨✧ Teddy CharlesVibraphone Players Of Bethlehem (aka Salute To Hamp) ... CD
Bethlehem, 1958. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
More straight ahead than some of Charles' other work from the time – most of which is fairly modernist – but still a strong batch of tracks, and one that has a lot more edge than the work of Lionel Hampton, to whom it was recorded as a "salute". Teddy's on vibes throughout – working in different groups that include players like Hank Jones, Zoot Sims, Art Farmer, Bob Brookmeyer, Ed Thigpen, and Addison Farmer. Tracks are all Hamp standards – including "Airmail Special", "Midnight Sun", "Flyin Home", "Stardust", and "Blue Hamp". CD also features some bonus alternate takes! CD

✨✧ Jimmy ClevelandIntroducing Jimmy Cleveland & His All Stars ... CD
Verve, 1955. Used Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An early leader session for Jimmy Cleveland – one that pulls him out of the Lionel Hampton group, and puts him in the company of a number of different all-stars – top level players that Mercury brought together in three different sessions for the album. Players include Lucky Thompson, Cecil Payne, Barry Galbraith, Wade Legge, Paul Chambers, and Jerome Richardson – and it's the quality of the ensemble grooving that really makes the album swing, a lot more than Cleveland's solos on his own. Titles include "Vixen", "Hear Ye Hear Ye", "See Minor", "Bone Brother", "Count 'Em", and "Little Beaver". CD

✨✧ Jimmy ScottEverybody's Somebody's Fool ... CD
Decca/Verve, Early 50s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Tremendous work from a young Jimmy Scott – a great collection that brings together rare singles for Decca, Coral, and Brunswick – plus a few tracks that were never issued at the time! Although Jimmy's work has become famous in recent years – thanks to much-needed support towards the later stretch of his life – he seems to sound even more compelling on these early sides – hanging in a sublime space between male and female vocal traditions, and often backed by groups that bring a bit of a modern flavor to the music. We'd almost say that we dig these sides more than Jimmy's better-known work for Savoy in the 50s – and backings are by the groups of Lionel Hampton, Billy Taylor, and Lucky Thompson – all artists who really keep jazz at the forefront. Titles include "Wheel Of Fortune", "I Wish I Knew", "I've Been A Fool", "Come What May", "They Say You Cry", "Alone With A Memory", "When You Surrender", "Why Was I Born", and "The Bluest Blues". CD
(Back of booklet has a small sticker.)

✨✧ VariousSavory Collection 1935 to 1940 (6CD set) ... CD
Mosaic, Late 30s. Used 6CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the most unique packages we've ever seen from the mighty Mosaic Records – not a set that focuses on a specific artist or record label – but instead a treasure trove of freshly-unearthed material from the archives of Bill Savory – a legendary sound engineer whose work for Columbia Records helped transform our understanding of classic jazz! The sides here aren't Bill's work for that label – but instead feature recordings he made of rare broadcast performances – material that's surprisingly well-recorded, given Savory's skills with the technology of the times – which means that these tracks are way more than the kind of fuzzy radio tapes that used to show up on older jazz bootleg albums. Mosaic did a great job of restoring these materials, and presenting them with wonderful clarity – in a succession of late 30s performances that feature rare work by Count Basie, Albert Ammons, Mildred Bailey, Teddy Wilson, Glenn Miller, John Kirby, Carl Cress, Ella Fitzgerald, Coleman Hawkins, Fats Waller, Lionel Hampton, Roy Eldridge, Jack Teagarden, and other giants of the swing generation. There's 108 tracks in all – including a few surprisingly long performances – and the whole thing comes with the usual hefty Mosaic Records package of notes and photos! CD
(Limited and numbered copy with box, book, and all the CDs – in nice shape!)

✨✧ Charles MingusHis Final Work ... CD
Who's Who, 1977. Used ... Out Of Stock
A wonderful later album by Charles Mingus – recorded under the supervision of vibist Lionel Hampton, who's also playing on the set! The album's got a rolling groove that's a bit different from other Mingus work of the time – possibly a bit more optimistic and warm, although still carried off with a nice edge in the arrangements. Players include Woody Shaw, Ricky Rod, Dannie Richmond, and even Gerry Mulligan – and the use of vibes brings a new sense of tone and color to Mingus' world, in a way that we really wouldn't expect. Titles include "Just For Laughs (parts 1 & 2)", "Slop", "Caroline Keikke Mingus", "Farewell Farewell", "Duke Ellington's Sound Of Light", and "Fables Of Faubus". CD

✨✧ Zoot SimsSomebody Loves Me ... CD
Groove Merchant/LRC, 1974. Used ... Out Of Stock
A motherlode of great music from Zoot Sims – mid 70s recordings done for the Groove Merchant label, presented here in a double-length package! Although Groove Merchant was mostly known for its funkier sounds, the work here is nicely back to basics for Sims – small group sessions that give him plenty of room to open up and blow – paired with players that include Lionel Hampton on vibes, Bucky Pizzarelli on guitar, Teddy Wilson on piano, and Buddy Rich on drums. The sound is warm, but never sleepy – and Zoot's tenor has a nice edge on his solos that dominate most tunes. CD features 14 tracks that include "Nirvana", "Somerset", "A Summer Thing", "Somebody Loves Me", "Up A Lazy River", "Come Rain Or Come Shine", "Send In the Clowns", "Air Mail Special", "Ham Hock Blues", and "Ring Dem Bells". Verve/Essential Jazz (Spain), 1955. Used ... Out Of Stock
A great group session from Art Tatum – recorded in the mid 50s, and featuring a sextet of some of the best Verve players of the time! Art's right at home in this setting – playing perhaps with a bit less dynamism on his solo and trio recordings of the decade, but really warming up nicely to company that includes Lionel Hampton on vibes, Harry Edison on trumpet, Barney Kessel on guitar, Red Callender on bass, and Buddy Rich on drums. Tracks are all longish, with plenty of room for everyone to do their thing – and titles include "Verve Blues", "What Is This Thing Called Love", "Plaid", "Somebody Loves Me", "Deep Purple", and "September Song". CD features an alternate take of "What Is This Thing Called Love" and a 78rpm single version of "September Song" – plus 3 more bonus tracks by Tatum in a trio setting! CD
