David Versace —
Okra ... LP LaSape (Australia), 2022. New Copy ...
A great mix of jazz instrumentation and contemporary rhythms from David Versace – an Australian musician who comes across here with the warmth of some of our favorite European projects from years back – such as classic records on labels like Schema or Compost! There's definitely lots of live instrumentation at the core – keyboards and saxophones especially – blended with rhythms that are both live and mixed, and always delivered with a current of warmth that matches the other instrumentation on the set! This isn't stiff jazz remix work, nor the too-beaty territory of some nujazz records – but instead a thoughtful blend of well-crafted elements, on titles that include "45 Minutes", "Heat Rays", "KP Cruisin", "Summer Party", "Awake For You", and "The More We Love". LP, Vinyl record album
Bassist/guitarist Horatio Luna heads up the Psychedelic Freaks here – group that's as funky as they are jazzy, and maybe only a bit psychedelic overall! Yet there's still plenty of fuzz and electricity in the music – nice processing on some of Luna's guitar lines, set up nice to plenty of keyboards and electronics that create some trippy 70s fusion vibes – spurred on by drums that are often heavy enough to really keep things moving, and prevent the electric elements from ever getting their wires crossed! Titles include "The Chosen Path", "To The Funk Valley", "I See Absolute", "Passing Through The Doorways Of Your Mind", and "Illuminated Waterfalls". LP, Vinyl record album
One of the few albums ever cut as a leader by pianist Tony Aless – an unsung hero of the big band years, especially in the Woody Herman group – and a great arranger too! This set's an all-original outing – a suite of tracks dedicated to Long Island, and played by a very hip group that has tenorist Seldon Powell in the lead – serving up work that's every bit as great here as on his own albums for Roost from the time! The record's got a slightly largish group – a tentet that's stuffed with great players – including Billy Bauer on guitar, JJ Johnson and Kai Winding on trombones, and Nick Travis on trumpet – all modernists who really bring in the sound you'd expect. Titles include "Fire Island", "Valley Stream", "Levittown", and "Massapequa". LP, Vinyl record album
(Blue label Royal Roost pressing with deep groove! Cover has just a hint of seam splitting on the top seam, and label has a sticker on one side – but this is a nice clean copy overall.)
