✨✧ James BrownMutha's Nature (LP sleeve edition) ... CD
Polydor/LMLR (France), 1977. New Copy ... $13.99 14.98
A fantastic late 70s album from James Brown – maybe one of his last true classics of the decade! The vibe's shifted a bit since the Payback era, but the sound is still totally great – as James is working closely here with Charles Sherrell (aka Sweet Charles) – in a style that's slightly different than his work with Fred Wesley or Maceo, but no less funky overall! There's still loads of sharp angles and gritty elements in the grooves – and titles include the tasty cut "If You Don't Give a Doggone About It", done with the JBs, one that has a nice choppy "Doin It To Death" sort of groove – plus "People Who Criticize", "Give Me Some Skin", "Have A Happy Day", "Bessie", "Summertime", "People Wake Up & Live", and "Take Me Higher & Groove Me". CD
(Limited edition HD remaster – in a nice little LP replica sleeve.)

James BrownSoulful Christmas (LP sleeve edition) ... CD
King/LMLR, 1968. New Copy ... $4.99 5.98
James Brown recorded a few different Christmas records back in the 60s – but this stunner may well be the best of the bunch – a killer record that not only fills the need for James Brown Holiday tunes, but which also more than lives up to his non-Christmas gems for King Records too! There's a nice mix of funk and soul throughout – and the album features the incredible hit "Santa Claus Goes Straight To The Ghetto", plus the funky "Tit For Tat", the groovy "Christmas Is Coming", and the soulful "Let's Unite The Whole World at Christmas". Also features some stone-cold non-holiday cuts – like "In The Middle", "Say It Loud", and "Believers Shall Enjoy". Plus, James is standing on the front in a Santa suit – looking mighty funky! Back cover has a great set of photos – and the whole thing's Super Bad! CD
(Limited edition LP style sleeve – with red CD that has a vinyl-style design!)

Francis Lai/Brigitte BardotLes Petroleuses (red vinyl pressing) ... LP
LMLR (France), 1971. New Copy ... $23.99 24.98
Les Petroleuses has a nice variety of sounds – some of the slinky, sexy, Euro-styled numbers you'd expect from Lai in the early 70s, and from a film starring Brigitte Bardot – mixed with other tracks that seem to foreground a version of the old west that's a bit playful – using barrelhouse piano or guitar to set a mood in time and place. There's a few vocal numbers – "La Ballade De Frenchie King" sung by Little Sammy Gaha, "La Vie Parisienne" sung by Micheline Presle, and "Prairie Woman" by Claudia Cardinale – and other tunes include "Merry Making", "Seduction", "Piano Saloon", "L'Attaque Du Train", "Le Noel Des Sarrazin", and "Bougival Junction". Memphis Slim & Canned HeatMemphis Heat (blue vinyl pressing) (2021 Black Friday Release) ... LP
LMLR (France), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99
Canned Heat recorded famously with John Lee Hooker during their years on Liberty Records – but here, the blues group is in very different territory – as they work with lead vocals and piano from Memphis Slim, in a Memphis-based setting that also features added work from The Memphis Horns! The recording was originally only issued in France – part of the House Of The Blues series for Barclay Records – and it's got maybe a more blues-first, rock-second quality than some of Canned Heat's other material – with Slim on most of the vocals, except for one cut that has Joe Hill singing lead. Titles include "Down The Big Road", "Back To Mother Earth", "Mr Longfingers", "Trouble Everywhere I Go", "Five Long Years", and "Whizzle Wham". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Clearlight SymphonyClearlight Symphony (pink vinyl pressing) ... LP
Culture Factory/LMLR, 1975. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A classic bit of stretched-out spaciness from the early days of Virgin Records – two side-long tracks that are filled with lots of cool keyboards, percussion, and other hip instrumentation! The record's the brainchild of Cyrille Verdeaux – who plays piano, organ, mellotron, and even gong on the set – working with a different group on each side – guitar, vibes, bass, and percussion on side one – and on side two, tenor from Didier Malherbe, guitar from Steve Hillage, and synth from Tim Blake! The sound is a bit too relaxed to be jamming, but definitely has a nice sort of proggish vibe – never sleeping, and always nice and exploratory, even when spacey. LP, Vinyl record album
