King Sunny Ade & His African BeatsAjoo ... LP
Makossa, 1983. Very Good- ... $19.99
A nice set from King Sunny Ade, licensed to the Makossa label, but in the style of his African recordings, featuring a number of shorter compositions strung together into side-longsuites. Hypnotic guitar lines and gentle diatonic melodies float over propulsive percolating percussion, with interjections from talking drum popping up here and there. Includes "Ajo Ni Mo Re", "Pegan Pegan", "Oluwa Lagboju Le", "Gbeyogbeyo", "Penkele", "Ewele" and "Tolongo". LP, Vinyl record album

King Sunny Ade & The New African BeatsDestiny ... LP
Atom Park (Nigeria), 1988. Very Good ... $19.99
We have to be honest, we know a little bit about African music, but not a lot. So when we came across a small stack of African records, we scooped them up and put them online, but rather than insult those of you out there who know and love this stuff, we're just listing them at a nice price without trying to describe them, and are confident you fans of the real deep African grooves will be able to know what you're looking at. This album features 10 tracks, including "Destiny", "Mo Gbadura", "Ojowu", "Ipe Ndun", "Laiye Ijosi" and "Teni Ni Teni". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ King Sunny AdeAura ... LP
Island, 1984. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A crucial record in the early days of the global scene in the 80s – a set that lifts the music of King Sunny Ade from its roots in Nigeria, and mixes it up with some fresh elements that really open things up for a world's worth of ears! The approach isn't commercial – at least not in the modes of the later world music years – but there's occasional elements that echo the beat culture rising up in New York and London, mixed with the warmer sounds that were always at Sunny's music – especially that way of making the acoustic percussion and basslines come together in flowing waves of completely sublime sound! All tracks are nice and long – and titles include "Gboromiro", "Oremi", "Ire", "Iro", "Ogunja", and "Ase". LP, Vinyl record album
(US pressing. Cover has light wear and an ink stamp on the back.)

✨✧ VariousNigeria Soul Power 70 – Afro Funk, Afro Rock, Afro Disco ... LP
Soul Jazz (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic collection of lesser-known gems from the 70s scene in Nigeria – music that's a great counterpart to better-remembered Afro Funk and soul from international giants like Fela Kuti and King Sunny Ade! This set digs deep, and is a nicelly expanded version of a set that Soul Jazz issued years back as a limited edition 7" single box for Record Store Day – presented here with more music, and a detailed set of notes – really getting at the special scene that was taking place in Nigeria at the time, as the nation was rising to the top of the African scene with a fantastic criss-crossing of musical modes! There's definitely plenty of the funk promised in the title, and the "rock" is usually of the funky kind with great guitar work – and a few later cuts even pick up the pace with a bit of disco, but more in the fast-funk mode, and hardly the slick stuff of the American scene. Titles include "Africans Must Unite" and "Shake Hands" by Geraldo Pino, "We'll Get Home" by The Wings, "E Ye Ika Se" by Alhagi Prof Kollington Ayinala, "Kassa Kpa Sama Kpa" by Colomach, "Beware" by MFB, "You Are The One" by Tony Grey & The Ozimba Messengers, "Single Boy" by The Wings, "Sugar Baby" by Don Bruce & The Angels", "Power To The People" by Geraldo Pino, "Igba Alusi" by Original Wings, "Dance Of The Elephants" by Sonny Okosunds Ozziddi, and "Oba Erediauwa I" by Sonny Okosuns. Bobby HebbSunny ... LP
Philips, 1966. Near Mint- ... $24.99
Sublime pop soul genius from Bobby Hebb – a standout record that really made his career, and a dusty nugget we never tire of hearing! Bobby was really unique at the time – singing a mixture of soul and pop that kept things real while still crossing over big – earning him an equal audience on both sides of the charts. Part of the credit for the album goes to producer Jerry Ross and arranger Joe Renzetti – who work here in a careful, almost gentle approach to pop – one that's never overblown, and which really lets Bobby's vocals step out front on the title hit "Sunny", plus other tunes that include "Crazy Baby", "I Am Your Man", "Where Are You", "Yes Or No Or Maybe Not", and "Love Love Love". LP, Vinyl record album
(Black label stereo pressing with deep groove. Cover has some wear and aging, half split seams with a piece of clear tape at the bottom, and a small piece of masking tape and call letters in marker on front. Label has a small piece of masking tape.)

Bill CosbyHooray For The Salvation Army Band! ... LP
Warner, 1968. Very Good+ ... $9.99
An early funk album by Bill Cosby – with backing by the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band! Bill was pals with Charles Wright and crew in the hip LA of the late 60s, and he was also responsible for bringing the group to Warner Brothers – so the fit here is quite a natural one. The record was also produced by Fred Smith – who handled the Watts Band's albums – and it's got a very similar feel to their classics for Warner from the late 60s – but with Bill Cosby stepping out in front on vocals, in a similar style to Charles Wright. Cosby's singing is often a bit goofy, but works beautifully with the stoned to the bone feel of the group – a madder match than even Charles Wright, especially on the album's "parody soul" cuts. Titles include a classic break version of "Get Out Of My Life, Woman" – plus the titles "Ursalena", "Funky North Philadelphia", "Sunny", and a surprisingly great screaming version of "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band". LP, Vinyl record album
(Gold label stereo pressing. Cover has ring and edge wear, a split spine, and some sticker spots on front.)

✨✧ Mama CassMama's Big Ones – Mama Cass – Her Greatest Hits ... LP
ABC/Dunhill, Late 60s/Early 70s. Very Good+ ... $7.99
Dreamy sunshine pop from the great Mama Cass! Forget her silly name and looks, forget the fact that she died an early stupid death, forget all the records she made with The Mamas & The Papas – Cass Elliott was a wonderful singer who had an approach to a pop song that was beyond compare. She was sugar sweet, but with a sad (slightly stoned?) dark edge that created a wonderful tension in her work – at once as sunny as the summer beaches in Santa Monica, at once as bitter as the gnawing rot that was eating Los Angeles away from the inside. Most of Mama's solo work is long out of print and rarely reissued – making this nicely priced set a super-gem to our ears! Titles include "Easy Come Easy Go", "The Good Times Are Coming", "One Way Ticket", "Ain't Nobody Else Like You", "It's Getting Better", "Don't Let The Good Life Pass You By", "Make Your Own Kind Of Music", and "Song That Never Comes". LP, Vinyl record album
(Black label pressing. Cover has a split spine, light surface wear, and a few stickers on the back.)

Janko NilovicSupra Hip Hop Impressions ... LP
Broc (France), 2016. New Copy ... $19.99 22.99
A really great setting for the talents of French funky sound library genius Janko Nilovic – a set of new recordings that feature Janko on keyboards, alongside some very stripped-down beats and rhythms! Given that Nilovic's music has been sampled often over the years, the approach is no surprise – and it's almost as if Janko has decided to give back to the hip hop community by making a more contemporary set of instrumentals, but with that trademark sense of funk and space that always made his classic records so great! There's a bit of flute and tenor on the record too – and titles include "This Is How We Do", "Sunny Piece", "A Walk On The Bright Side", "No More Sorrow", "My Latin Thing", "A Spy Always Lie", and "Vox Of My Soul". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Benny SingsMusic (colored vinyl pressing) ... LP
Stones Throw, 2021. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Benny Sings has a scruffy sort of look on the cover here – but his music is wonderfully smooth and soulful – every bit the sound that we've loved on all of his previous records, and which makes Benny maybe one of the under-discovered talents of the global scene of the past decade or so! Benny's got a way of putting together songs that are simple and tuneful, often with relatively light instrumentation – but which have a way of getting his charms across right from the start, like he's some sort of top-shelf Cali talent from the 70s, just cooking up cool little tunes in his home studio on Fender Rhodes. Titles include "Here It Comes", "Nobody's Fault", "Break Away", "Sunny Afternoon", "Run Right Back", "Miracles", "Music", and "Lost Again". LP, Vinyl record album
(Indie exclusive colored vinyl pressing!)
Also available Music ... CD 9.99
