✨✧ Kalaparusha Maurice McIntyreHumility In The Light Of Creator (plus bonus track) ... CD
Delmark, 1969. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the most spiritual albums to come from the young AACM movement in Chicago – a session that's somewhat equal in expression to some of the best post-Coltrane work on Impulse Records! Maurice McIntyre plays here with a sound that's already fully formed – an approach to the tenor that's as searingly human as that of Pharoah Sanders or Albert Ayler – but which is also played with a sharpness at times that recalls a young Marion Brown. The rest of the group is equally well-matched – a tremendous array of talent from the Chicago scene, with Malachi Favors on bass, Thurman Barker and Ajaramu on drums, Leo Smith on trumpet and flugelhorn, John Stubblefield on soprano sax, and Amina Claudine Myers on piano. George Hines vocalizes a bit on a few tracks – singing in a spiritual tone that's somewhat like Leon Thomas, but much freer and more abstract – and the album beautifully balances shorter musical statements with a fuller suite on side two – showing the deeper, more ambitious expressions that were starting to well up in the AACM. Titles include the tremendous "Humility In The Light Of Creator", plus "Hexagon", "Kcab Emoh", "Pluto Calling", "Life Force", and "Suite – Ensemble Fate". CD also features a bonus version of the title track! CD

Kalaparusha Maurice McIntyreLive From Studio Rivbea – Kalaparusha Maurice McIntyre July 12, 1975 ... CD
No Business (Lithuania), 1975. New Copy ... $16.99 19.99
A fantastic loft jazz session from the great reedman Kalaparusha Maurice McIntyre – working here at a time when his genius was really unbridled, and his work on tenor was taking off even more strongly than on some of his early contributions to the AACM scene in Chicago! The set marks a much-needed example of Kalaparusha at work during a time when he was not that well-recorded – the set lies between his two early Delmark albums and his Japanese record on Baystate – and the whole thing is every bit as tremendous as you might expect, and a fantastic demonstration not only of the spiritual, soulful energy that made McIntyre so special, but also the way that his time on the New York scene was maybe bringing a sense of resonance there with earlier Chicago spirits. The group is great – with a young Malachi Thompson on trumpet, Alvin Fiedler on drums, and Milton Suggs on electric bass – an instrument that creates some pulsations that really hold the whole thing together – on three long improvisations that make up the album. ✨✧ Kalaparusha Maurice McIntyre/Sunny Murray/AirWildflowers – The New York Loft Jazz Sessions Sampler ... LP
Douglas, 1977. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Promo sampler from this five volume series issued on Douglas in the mid 70s – one that did a great job of documenting some of the formative underground playing that was happening in the New York loft scene, almost more creative work than in previous generations, thanks to a lack of commercial venues, and hence, commercial constraints on the music. 6 tracks: Kalaparusha Maurice McIntyre "Jays", Sunny Murray & The Untouchable Factor feat. Byard Lancaster "Over The Rainbow", Randy Weston "Portrait Of Frank Edward Weston", Hamiet Bluiett "Tranquil Beauty", Air "USO Dance" and Michael Jackson "Clarity (2)". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Marion BrownGeechee Recollections (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Impulse/MCA (Japan), 1973. Used Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Quite possibly our favorite record ever from reedman Marion Brown – and very different than both his seminal 60s recordings, and his European sides from later years! There's a really earthy feel to this record – one that really lives up to the title, and which comes from the use of lots of percussion, played by just about every group member, ala AACM – but handled in a style that's warmly spiritual, and very organic too – right in line with the best Impulse Records vibe of the time, yet completely its own thing too! Brown plays alto and soprano sax, and is working with players who include Leo Smith on trumpet, William Malone on mbira and autoharp, James Jefferson on bass, and Steve McCall, Jumma Santos, Bill Hasson, and A Kobena Adzenyah on percussion – in addition to percussion plays by other group members too. Two tracks are spare, beautiful solos – almost a Kalaparusha Maurice McIntyre vibe – and titles include "Buttermilk Bottom", "Once Upon A Time", "Tokalokaloka", and "Karintha". CD

✨✧ Roots MagicTake Root Among The Stars ... CD
Clean Feed (Portugal), 2020. Used ... Out Of Stock
These guys already had our attention the moment we looked at the back cover – and noted that they were playing songs by Phil Cohran, Sun Ra, and Kalaparusha Maurice McIntyre – then they really won us over once we heard the very first few notes of the set! The group's only a quartet on most tracks, but they've got a sense of majesty to really live up to the music – definitely making magic with the roots they refer to in their name – in a lineup that features Alberto Popolla on clarinet and bass clarinet, Errico De Fabritiis on alto and baritone sax, Gianfranco Tedeschi on bass, and Fabrizio Spera on drums and percussion. There's some nice surprises along the way – harmonica, zither, and "objects" used in the performances – and there's a way of reworking avant traditions that remind us of some of the most innovative sides of the Italian scene at the end of the 80s – on titles that include "When There Is No Sun", "Karen On Monday", "Frankiphone Blues", "Devil Got My Woman", "Humility In The Light Of The Creator", and "A Girl Named Rainbow". ✨✧ VariousWildflowers – New York Loft Jazz 1976 (3CD set) ... CD
Douglas (France), 1976. Used 3 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Seminal work from the New York avant scene of the mid 70s – an important series of recordings done by Alan Douglas, and sides that initially broke the creative spirit of the scene to a much wider audience! There's a loose, openly creative spirit to these recordings that's a marked change from the intensity of the New York avant recordings of the 70s – a maturity, and confidence, that's come from some of the players' previous work in avant scenes in Chicago, St Louis, and elsewhere – coming together in New York's limelight with some really amazing energy! This 3CD set brings together tracks from all 5 volumes of the original LPs – over 3 hours' of music, with work by players who include Kalaparusha Maurice McIntyre and David Murray on tenors; Ken McIntyre, Marion Brown, Oliver Lake, Jimmy Lyons, and Byard Lancaster on alto saxes; Randy Weston, Anthony Davis, and Sonelius Smith on piano; Ted Daniel, Leo Smith, and Olu Dara on trumpet; Khan Jamal on vibes, George Lewis on trombone, Jerome cooper on percussion, and many others too!
