Johnny Ray DanielsWhatever You Need ... CD
Bible & Tire, 2022. New Copy ... $11.99 15.99
Soulful, spiritual sounds from North Carolina legend Johnny Ray Daniels – an artist who started out in soul, but soon found gospel more to his liking – then went on to create a decades-long legacy of wonderful music like this! The album's contemporary, but given a very old school treatment in the best style of the Bible & Tire label – small combo backing by the Sacred Soul Sound Section, who warm things up with Hammond organ and guitar – while Johnny Ray handles some of the lead guitar on the cuts, and gets support from Amp Daniels and Keamber Daniels on his lead vocals! Titles include "I Shall Not Be Moved", "Whatever You Need", "Something Within Me", "Thank You Lord", "Church Get Ready", and "Lord You've Been Good To Me". CD
Also available Whatever You Need ... LP 16.99

✨✧ VariousReturn Of Mod Jazz – Mod Jazz Vol 5 ... CD
Kent (UK), 1960s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Get ready to throw away your jukebox – because this tasty set has all the grooves you'd ever want, all packed in one tasty CD! The sound of Mod Jazz is the sound of the 60s – a blistering blend of Hammond organ, soulful vocals, swinging rhythms, and a finger-snapping assortment of various instrumental modes – all brought together from unlikely sources into one hip-stepping, bad-walking collection! As with previous volumes, the set list here is really outta sight – and blends together a few familiar numbers with overlooked gems from rare singles and obscure LPs – many by artists that we know and love, but who we didn't know could cook up a groove this nicely. There's a real speaker-blowing quality to the whole thing, too – the kind of soulful, thumping styles that would have made this CD feel right at home in a southside jazz lounge back in the day! 24 tracks in all – with titles that include "Beaver" by Clarence Armstrong, "Banana Peels" by Johnny Otis, "Hide Out" by The Hideaways, "Bell Bottoms" by Joe Swift's Internationals, "East Side" by Hank Jacobs, "Have Some Boogaloo" by Timmy Thomas, "El Pussy Cat" by Mongo Santamaria, "Summertime" by George Benson Quartet, "Sack O Woe" by Ray Bryant, "Them Blues" by Billie Poole, "Sweet Lover No More" by Gene McDaniels, "Wild Bird" by Googie Rene, and "Get It" by The Swinging Tomatoes. VariousModernists – Modernism's Sharpest Cuts ... LP
Kent (UK), 1960s. New Copy ... $16.99 24.98
Not "modernists" as in the kind you'd find in the art world – but instead "mods", of the sort that were the biggest proponents of soul music in mid 60s London! The package is a stellar array of rare soul tracks that all fit right in the best mod vibe that bubbled big for a few key years in the UK – a blend of romping soul, heavy R&B, and groovy jazz numbers that flow together with nonstop energy and a righteous sort of power that was extremely liberating at the time – and which still stuns us all these many years later! And unlike a lot of mod soul sets, this one isn't filled with overdone hits, and instead tries to find more obscure cuts that really fit the mod spirit of the glory days – all rare 60s numbers, but some of which never even circulated much back in the day. Wonderful stuff throughout – a great soul music counterpart to the Mod Jazz series on Kent – with titles that include "Sundown" by The Merced Blue Notes, "Dancing Everywhere" by Bob & Earl, "Soul Is My Game" by Chet Ivey & His Fabulous Avengers, "East Side" by Hank Jacobs, "Jet Set" by Mel Williams, "Ain't That Soul" by Teddy Reynolds, "Go" by Little Johnny Hamilton & The Creators, "Hard Working Girl" by Clarence Daniels & Obie Jessie, "Another Child Lost" by Floyd White, "A Feeling Deep Inside" by The Corvairs, "The Real Thing" by Troy Dodds, "You Should Have Been A Doctor" by Bessie Banks, "I'm Gonna Get You" by Leroy Harris, and "All Around The World" by Chuck Higgins. ✨✧ VariousState Of The Union – The American Dream 1967 to 1973 – Presented By Bob Stanley & Pete Wiggs ... CD
Ace (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A great look at the changing tone on the American scene at the end of the 60s – that moment when Vietnam, social unrest, and many other problems weighed heavily on the country's consciousness – and made their presence manifest in all sorts of pop music as well! We're not talking about the familiar sounds of the Woodstock generation – but instead more mainstream artists who had never touched on politics or social issues before – but suddenly found themselves singing alongside the underground about the bigger problems of the day. This package is a superb look at that moment – put together by the team who've given us the great English Weather and Paris In The Spring collections for Ace – with the same care for choice of tracks, and a wealth of wonderful notes that really get at the nature of these unusual tunes. Titles include "Clean Up Your Own Back Yard" by Elvis Presley, "Wine In The Wind" by Anita Kerr Singers, "Paint Me Black Angels" by Eartha Kitt, "This Crazy World" by Paul Anka, "Questions" by Bobby Darin, "Do You Believe This Town" by Dean Martin, "Cardboard California" by Buddy Greco, "Cherrystones" by Eugene McDaniels, "Save The Children" by Teresa Brewer, "Welfare Hero" by Johnny Tillotson, "What Do We Do With The World" by Bing Crosby, "4th Of July" by The Beach Boys, "Mr Businessman" by Ray Stevens, "Paint America Love" by Lou Christie, "Hitchhiker" by The Four Preps, "Brand New Day" by Della Reese, "Saturday's Father" by The 4 Seasons, and "Southbound Jericho Parkway" by Roy Orbison.
