Johnny LytleHappy Ground! (Jazzland LP – 1961) ... LP
Jazzland, 1961. Very Good ... $11.99
A killer set of grooves from vibes legend Johnny Lytle – one of the first and one of the few to ever combine vibes with Hammond organ – in this case, the work of Milt Harris on the keys! The group is a very rhythmic trio, thanks to Harris on the bass pedals, and Penny Hinant on the drums – and titles include the great "Lela", a jazz dance classic if there ever was one – and a precursor to some of Lytle's work to come on the Tuba label. Other tracks include "Secret Love", "Happy Ground", "It's All Right With Me", and "Tag Along". LP, Vinyl record album
(Blue label Riverside pressing, RM 470, with microphone logo and deep groove. Cover has a half split top seam, mostly split bottom seam, and some light stains on back.)

Eivind AarsetIE ... CD
Jazzland (Norway), 2016. Used ... $12.99
One of the most dynamic records we've ever heard from Eivind Aarset – a set that's got all the offbeat electronics of his other albums, but which sometimes comes across with a lot more drive and direct power overall! Some points almost have a full-on fusion feel – with drums that propel the other instrumentation, and create a lot more structure in the sound – while other moments continue the more abstract level of Aarset's electronic explorations, but sometimes with a bit more warmth overall – thanks in part to some occasional added horns and other elements – plus compelling non-electric sounds on logdrum, tympani, prepared piano, and glockenspiel. There's a tiny bit of vocals on the record, but most of the set is instrumental – and shifts between some guitar lines from Eivind, and the wider sonic palette. Titles include "Rask", "Hidden/Feral", "One & The Same", "Through Clogged Streets Passed Rotten Buildings", "Return To Her Home", and "They'll Be Asked Nothing". CD

Jazzland (Norway), 2021. New Copy ... $14.99 19.99
An album with a really beautiful title – a reference to "My Favorite Things", perhaps – and one that's got a sound that's equally beautiful to match – very different than some of the noisier music we've heard from Eivind Aarset in the past! Yet as with all his other great records, there's a real sense of abstraction here – as Eivind plays guitar, bass, and adds in plenty of electronics – next to work from Jan Bang on a range of samples, programs, and editing – a sense of sound that's layered, sometimes densely, but never darkly – almost taking us back to EG Records territory right at the end of the 70s. The set features a few guests along the way – Nils Petter Molvaer plays trumpet on one track – but most tunes are quite spare, and very lovely. Titles include "Before The Wedding", "Two Days In June", "Purplebright", "Asphalt Lake", "Monochrome", and "Night Spell". CD

✨✧ AtomicThere's A Hole In The Mountain ... LP
Jazzland (Norway), 2013. New Copy ... $19.99 29.99
Maybe the most brilliant work so far from Atomic – and definite proof that this Swedish ensemble just keeps getting better and better with each new recording! Every player in the quintet is a star in his own right – Fredrik Ljungkvist on tenor and baritone sax, Magnus Broo on trumpet, Havard Wilk on piano, Ingebrigt Haker Flaten on bass, and Paal Nilssen-Love on drums – but what's really amazing is the way they come together as one for the record – wrapping their strong identities together, and forging out with this focused sound that has a lot more power than ever before! All the musicians know the open space of freedom, but have found a territory that can hold them all – where they can respectfully create this wonderful new sound together – in a mix of modern jazz and avant expression that seems to echo some of the best recent work from Chicago. Titles include "There's A Hole In The Mountain", "Civilon", "Wolf Cage", "Accidentals", "Labyrinths", and "Available Exits". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Baker Hansen & John Pal InderbergLive I Oslo – Baker Hansen Speler Chet Baker Sin Musikk Pa Norsk ... CD
Jazzland (Norway), 2021. New Copy ... $14.99 19.99
That's a young Chet Baker on the cover of the record, and the set's a really beautiful experiment based on the music that Chet recorded back in the 50s – a reworking of some of the songs he sung and made his own, turned into versions with lyrics in Norwegian, and instrumentation that nicely changes things up! Don't worry, there's still a trumpeter in the group – Thomas Husmo Litleskare does a great job in that role – but John Pal Inderberg brings in some excellent baritone, crafting these warm solos that are a surprisingly great match for the Baker-spirited trumpet – in a group that also featuers Kjetil Jerve on piano, Stian Andreas Egeland Andersen on bass, and Tore Flatjord on drums. Vocals are by Sigurd Rotvik Tunsetveit – and despite all the strange language in place, you'll find plenty to love here if you're as in love with the classic Chet Baker spirit as much as us! Titles include new versions of "Let's Get Lost", "How Deep Is The Ocean", "You Don't Know What Love Is", "There Will Never Be Another You", and "Everything Happens To Me". CD

Jazzland (Norway), 2000s/Early 2010s. New Copy 3 CDs ... Just Sold Out!
A stunning collection – one that features all the best bits of this group that we totally love – plus a bonus live set too! Beady Belle are wonderful – a Scandinavian group, but one who've gotten plenty of play over here in the underground soul set for years – thanks to this universal groove in their music, and completely sublime lyrics and vocals from lead singer Beate Lech – an artist we'd rank right up there with one of the best soul singers on either side of the Atlantic! The first 2CDs in the set focus on the standout tracks from the group's all-great albums on the Jazzland label – titles that include "Skin Deep", "Turn Back Time", "Apron Strings", "Saved", "Diamond In The Rough", "Runaway Mind", "Shadow", "Intermission Music", "When My Anger Starts To Cry", "Half Truth", "Big Balloon", and "Touch Of Paradise". Then, CD3 features a live set from Oslo in 2013 – with titles that include "My Name On The World", "Closer", "Shadow", "Skin Deep", "Come Home", and "Every Moment". CD

Jazzland, Late 50s. Very Good+ ... $48.99
A nice little LP that combines 2 different earlier sets for Riverside. The first one features 3 tracks – "Gee", "Kingston Lounge", and "The Boys From Brooklyn" – pulled from Matthew Gee's Jazz By Gee set, a septet recording that featured Kenny Dorham, Frank Foster, Cecil Payne, and Joe Knight. The last 3 tracks – "Orient", "Free Flight", and "Gone With The Wind" – are pulled from a more obscure Ernie Henry set, a quintet recording with Dorham, Kenny Drew, Wilbur Ware, and Art Taylor. Dorham's the common element here – but all players cook pretty darn hard! LP, Vinyl record album

A really cool little project – and one that's much better than you might expect at first glance! The "Destiny" in the title refers to the songs – as they're all originals first recorded by Destiny's Child, served up here in instrumental jazz readings with some very creative instrumentation – often cool, compressed trumpet lines upfront, mixed with more electric elements that often move together in a wider space of sound – grounded by more distinct work on drums! There's a sense of music going into textures and back again – almost as if Jon Hassell and Bill Laswell were recording a project like this together – and titles include "Independent Women", "Survivor", "Stand Up For Love", "Jumpin Jumpin", and "Bootylicious". Red GarlandSolar ... CD
Jazzland/OJC, 1962. Used ... $11.99
An obscure little quartet session from Red Garland – recorded with Les Spann on both guitar and flute, caught at a time when he was just starting to make waves on the New York scene! The presence of Spann gives the record a decidedly different feel than most of Garland's work on Prestige – as the hollow-body guitar tones bring some much bluesier inflections to some of the tunes, offset by more chromatic runs that really illuminate others. Red's own piano is still wonderfully soulful, and presented here with a pointed sense of economy on some numbers – and rhythm is by Sam Jones on bass and Frank Gant on drums. Titles include "Marie's Delight", "This Can't Be Love", "Blues For News", "I Just Can't See For Looking", and "Solar". CD

Jazzland, 1961. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
The twin-tenor duo of Johnny Griffin and Eddie Lockjaw Davis were really on fire in the early 60s – and unlike other pairings of the time, they often brought a strong dose of modernism to their music – as you'll hear in these great interpretations of tunes by Thelonious Monk! The record's a great reminder that the reach of Monk extended far beyond the highbrows of jazz a the time – as Griff and Lock take a nice soul-based path through the tunes, with help from Junior Mance on piano, Larry Gales on bass, and Ben Riley on drums! Titles include "Epistrophy", "Stickball", "In Walked Bud", "Well, You Needn't", and "Rhythm-a-ning". LP, Vinyl record album

Joe HarriottSouthern Horizons ... LP
Jazzland/Down At Dawn (Italy), 1960. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99
Excellent! This record is one of the lost chapters in the career of the great British alto player Joe Harriott. The session was recorded before Joe's experimental "Abstract" release, and way before his "Indo Jazz Fusions" experiments – but it's still an excellent session of off-kilter bop that shows what a keen talent Joe was on the alto. He's playing here in the company of the great Shake Keane on trumpet – another fellow West Indian expatriate who was living in London – along with Coleridge Goode on bass, Harry South on piano, and Bobby Orr on drums – plus some bonus from Frank Holder on a few tracks, which sound mighty nice. The session was probably released in the UK, but this US issue is the only time we ever seem to see it – and it's not a record that shows up often. Tracks include "Liggin", "Caravan", "Senor Blues", "Count Twelve", and "Southern Horizons". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Hakon KornstadOut Of The Loop ... CD
Jazzland (Norway), 2021. New Copy ... $14.99 19.99
They might have gotten the title wrong, as the loop is very much a part of this record – particularly a loop pedal that saxophonist Hakon Kornstad uses to really flesh out the sound of this beautiful solo album! The set was recorded during lockdown in 2020, but it's one of the warmer, more evocative records we've heard from that time – still filled with all the subtle charm of Hakon's work on tenor – as well as flute, flutonet, and sansula – sometimes given a gentle flow and inherent sense of rhythm by the loop pedal, but never in a way that feels like a gimmick at all, or which gets in the way of the jazz textures of Hakon's work! There's some especially beautiful moments here on tenor – and the whole thing was recorded in a church in Oslo, which gives the acoustics of the record a really beautiful quality. Titles include "Bremen", "Strut", "Waking Arp", "Nakai", and "A Movie That Never Was". CD

✨✧ Harald LassenHuman Samling (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Jazzland (Norway), 2021. New Copy ... $22.99 29.99
Really beautiful sounds from Harald Lassen – a record that's very much in the best tradition of the Jazzland label, and the way that Scandinavian imprint can mix jazz expression with more unusual sounds and styles! Lassen plays saxes here, but also handles piano and a bit of midi – which layers his solo sounds into the energy of the rest of the group on guitars, keyboards, bass, and drums – instruments that are almost always used in ways that are a bit abstracted from their original modes – but never in a style that's too gimmicky, or too cold – the last of which is especially important to us. There's always a tunefulness to the music – even on the album's three improvised tracks – and the sound isn't exactly jazz, but isn't far off either. Titles include "About Music", "How It Feels", "Voyager", "Thinkwalk", "Stella", and "Before You Came". LP, Vinyl record album

An unusual record for vibist Johnny Lytle – one that has him breaking from his usual trio formation, to work in a super-tight lineup that includes some soul jazz heavyweights! The sound's quite different than Lytle's usual mix of organ and vibes, but still pretty darn great – thanks to a group that includes Bobby Timmons on piano, Johnny Griffin on tenor, Sam Jones on bass, and Louis Hayes on drums. Johnny's vibes are out front in the mix – leaping around some really inventive grooves that have a rollicking early 60s soul jazz approach – and titles include "Soul Time", "322-Wow!", "Coroner's Blues", and "That's All". A beautifully dynamic set from Mohamed Issa Haji – aka Matona – a musician from Zanzibar with a specialty in Taarab, which is an unusual hybrid of African, Arabic, and Indian musical styles! The group here features Matona on oud, vocals, and percussion – illuminated by very colorful elements from guitar, tenor, bass, drums, violin, and percussion – plus vocals from the rest of the group as well – and Gora Mohamed Gora plays the rich-voiced qanun on three of the album's ten tracks, which adds this depth to the record that's amazing! Instrumental passages dominate more than the vocals – and there's some really fantastic interplay between some of the Norwegian musicians in the group too – on titles that include "Aziza", "Sikitiko", "Alaminadura", "Zena", "Ashairejea", and "Ashiki Baya". Jazzland (Norway), 2021. New Copy ... $14.99 19.99
There's nothing too mechanical about the sound of the piano here – although at some level, there's also some very interesting mechanics involved in the project! The music started out when Benjamin Mork bought an old grand piano that had been painted blue – and rather than try to completely restore it, he instead sonically deconstructed it – placing microphones around the instrument, both inside and out – to capture sounds that are still very piano-based, but also have all these other sonic possibilities too! The result is a record of surprising beauty – maybe a bit in the territory of some of the more spacious Bugge Wesseltoft recordings in recent years, especially those that effortlessly mix acoustic and electric elements. Titles include "Argentina", "Etter Vi For", "Attover", "I Et Oyeblikk", "Kjor Forsiktig", and a very nice take on the Ryuichi Sakamoto tune "Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence". CD

Very cool work from this hip Norwegian trio – a group that maybe returns keyboardist Bugge Wesseltoft to some of the more rhythmic modes that made us first fall in love with his music! The setup here is familiar – piano, bass, and drums – but there's lots of surprises along the way – as Bugge mixes in Fender Rhodes, moog, and celeste, plus a bit of electronics with his piano – and bassist Dan Berglund handles more electronics too. Drummer Magnus Ostrum's not one to be left out, so he adds in some too – while also working with more acoustic percussion – and the tunes have a quality that's nicely rhythmic, but still with some of the open approaches to melody that Wesseltoft gave us in his more ambient work. ✨✧ Chet BakerChet Baker In Milan ... CD
Jazzland/OJC, 1959. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A rare Italian album from Chet Baker – wonderfully cooking small group work that's a far bit greater than his more familiar "with strings" session recorded in Italy during the same period! The album's got Chet working with an array of great players from the local scene – including Gianni Basso on tenor sax, Renato Sellani on drums, and Glauco Masetti on alto sax – all in a groove that shows plenty of traces of that opened-up sound that Baker was exploring in the very late 50s – the modes he was crafting in his group with Phil Urso on tenor, as he started to get a bit more bit in his style! Yet there's also a nicely compressed approach going on here too – that west coast sound that was a strong influence on the Italian players of the postwar years, but which was unfolded to new ends in their hands. ✨✧ Clifford Jordan & Sonny RedStory Tale ... LP
Jazzland, 1961. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A brilliant collaboration between Clifford Jordan and Sonny Red! At the time of this recording, Jordan was one of a number of firey young tenor players from Chicago – all of them hard-blowing, with a nice soulful bottom that opened up a bop sound to more moods and emotions – but Jordan stood apart from most of them with an approach that was decidedly more complex and forward-thinking. As you'll hear on the album's tracks, he wasn't content enough to just blow off a riff – but had to twist things up a bit, working a tune for more shades and colors than it might yield with another player, pushing on the proceedings with an edge that works especially well for Red, who opens up here more than he does on some of his other sides from the time. Red's tone is excellent – a sharper one next to Jordan's more supple blowing – and the pair are a perfect team to lead off tunes like "Prints", "Hip Pockets", "A Story Tale", and "Defiance". Trumpeter Hildegunn Oiseth also plays a bit of goat horn on this record – and that horn really seems to inform the way she phrases her lines on the more conventional instrument! Hildegunn has a sense of phrasing that's very different than most – nicely compressed notes that come out gently and warmly, almost with the spaciousness of a flugelhorn, but more close-in and personal – and balanced with equally warm yet spacious contributions from Espen Berg on piano, Magne Thormondsaeter on bass, and Per Oddver Johansen on drums. There's a beautiful sense of texture to the album throughout – maybe a sound that's in the ECM mode, but a lot warmer and more human – on titles that include "Whatever", "Safe Mode", "Now Now", "Lost & Found", "Keep Walking", and "Furusang".
