✨✧ Gianni BrezzoTutto Passa ... CD
Jakarta (Germany), 2022. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
An imagined bit of Italian jazz – put together by German producer/instrumentalist Marvin Horsch, and with the kind of sunny, breezy vibe you might hear from the crowd at Schema Records! By that, we mean that the set mixes live instrumentation with some sound samples and other rhythm programs – a nice pastiche of elements that has Horsch as Brezzo handling a fair bit of keyboards and guitar, in a lineup that also features bits of sax, flute, trumpet, harp, and even a bit of strings! Titles include "Fiore Della Mia Vita", "Auguria", "Metitation", "Torino", "Vieni Con Me", "Rising Of My Mind", and "Il Consiglio". CD

Juju Rogers40 Acres N Sum Mula ... CD
Jakarta (Germany), 2019. Used ... $2.99
Juju Rogers cut a pretty unique path on his debut album, and this might be even stronger! He has a unique perspective to draw from – born and raised in Germany with an African American GI father and a German mother, his voice and perspective in contemporary hip hop is fresh and distinctive by nature – but the craft is universally relatable. The beats and bass thump, there's nice use of live instrumentation on several tracks, and Juju's charismatic and forthright rhymes and sung vocals are really strong. Includes "89", "Real S**t", "Black Thursday", "Follow Me", "Mula", "10 Yas", "Identity", "God" & "Babalyon". CD

Otis Junior & Dr DundiffHemispheres ... CD
Jakarta (Germany), 2017. New Copy ... $4.99 15.98
A duo who really take the hemispheres in their title seriously – as lyrics and vocals are all by Otis Junior, and the album's spare rhythms and instrumentation are from Dr Dundee! Otis is a hell of a frontman – as he's got this laidback, raspy style that really fits the open, honest quality of his words – lyrics that are spacily spoken as much as they're sung – in this haunting style that really fits the crispy core elements provided by the doctor. The duo are surprisingly strong together – really supporting each other in the best way, and not lapsing into too-familiar beats-n-lyrics cliches – on titles that include "Hemispheres", "Bubble", "Why Can't You Just Come For Conversation", "The Mixture", "3 Winds", "Bye From Space", and "Under My Skin", which features a guest appearance by Jim James. ✨✧ VariousLuxury Soul 2020 (3CD set) ... CD
Expansion (UK), 2020. Used 3CD ... Out Of Stock
Soulful luxury at a mighty nice price – 3CDs and 35 tracks of music from the contemporary underground, plus a few cuts from back in the day – all put together with the top-shelf style of the Expansion Records label! The package is one of the best so far in this annual series – and like the others, it has a great way of turning up unusual numbers we might have missed otherwise – some subtle gems and overlooked sleepers, which makes the package as much of a place for new discovery as it is a musical bargain. As with other volumes, contemporary soul expert Ralph Tee handled all the tracks selection – and titles include "Follow" by Paul Johnson, "In The Mood To Take It Slow" by Najee with Meli'sa Morgan, "Speak Love" by James Day with Glenn Jones, "Slow Down" by Bill Henry Band, "Let Me Do It" by Halo, "Jakarta Dreams" by Incognito, "Never Let Go" by Candace Woodson, "Together" by Rockie Robbins, "Friends" by Rick Clarke featuring Don E, "It's You" by Terri Green Project, "I See Love (Metlife rmx)" by Cornell CC Carter, "Love Up" by Zo with Eric Roberson and Carmen Rodgers, "Lovestruck (2019 rework)" by Frankie Fandango, "Who's Been Kissing You" by Soulutions, "Clouds In My Mirror (Nigel Lowis sholes mix)" by Franciscsa Thomas, "It Should Have Been You" by Lasperanza with Izzy Chase, "Reach Out" by Laura Jackson, "Who Do You Love" by Victor Haynes, "We Won't Stop" by One Way with Al Hudson, "Don't Hold Back" by Alex Puddu with Gene Robinson, Jr, "Your Satisfaction Is Mine" by Ed Motta, and "Better Man" by Glenn Jones. VariousTanamur City – Indonesian AOR, City Pop, & Boogie 1979 to 1991 ... CD
Cultures Of Soul, Late 70s/1980s/Early 90s. New Copy ... $12.99 16.99
A really fantastic look at a scene we might never heard otherwise – served up here in a selection of cuts that have a really surprising vibe! Forget everything you know about Indonesian music, as the work here seems to draw most heavily from the European scene at the time – particularly some of the cooler grooves that were coming out of French clubs as things got a bit more playful and catchy after the disco years – and maybe with a dose of UK electro pop elements too! The work has a strong 80s vibe overall – and is different than you might expect from all three of the styles referenced in the title – maybe more of a hinterland past the bigger names on Virgin Records during the decade – catchy, well-produced, but a lot more interesting than chartbound material too. Titles include "Musik Kami" by Gito Rollies, "Waktu Kian Berarti" by Chaseiro, "Langkah Kemuka" by Andi MM, "Kenangan Asmara" by Grace Simon, "Denny" by Lidya Kandou, "Catatan Kisah" by Rafika Duri, "PHK" by Iwan Fals, and "Jakarta Kasmaran" by Denny Malik.
