✨✧ Isley BrothersBetween the Sheets ... LP
T Neck, 1983. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
A wonderful album from the Isley Brothers – and a real departure from their funkier sound of the 70s! The album has the group operating in a wonderful smooth soul mode – just what you'd expect from the "between the sheets" in the title, and the silky bedclothes on the cover! The centerpiece of the album is the loving title cut – a wonderfully catchy number that works well not only as a stepper's dancefloor tune, but also as a hip hop sample track (used most famously in Tribe Called Quest's "Bonita Applebum".) The whole thing's great, though – and other tracks include "Choosey Lover", "Touch Me", "Slow Down Children" and "Getting' Over". LP, Vinyl record album

T Neck/CBS, 1976. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
A very cool record – one done as part of a promo-only series from Columbia/Epic – with cover art that replicated the then-popular book titled Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Sex But Were Afraid To Ask! 8 numbers from their mid 70s prime: "That Lady", "What It Comes Down To", "Summer Breeze", "Live It Up", "Midnight Sky", "Need A Little Taste Of Love", "Fight The Power" and "Hope You Feel Better Love". ✨✧ Isley BrothersGo For Your Guns ... CD
T Neck/Columbia, 1977. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A funky album – but one that we love best for the mellow tracks! Sure, the Isleys could wear flashy suits and play some heavy guitar – but honestly, what we really love them for here are the laidback, loving tunes they do so well. The album includes 2 of their greatest ballad tracks ever – "Voyage To Atlantis" and "Footsteps In The Dark" – plus the midtempo tune "Tell Me When You Need It Again", another great track that almost has the same power as the other two. Other tracks include "Climbin Up The Ladder", "The Pride", and "Go For Your Guns". CD

Isley BrothersHeat Is On ... LP
T Neck, 1975. Very Good Gatefold ... $6.99
A great mix of heavy funk and sweeter ballads from the Isley Brothers – and a record that's filled with two-part tracks that really let them stretch out and groove! The tunes have a bit more bass and keyboards than before – an approach that's even more electric than Isley funk of a few years back, and which steps out in some tightly vamping rhythms that still crackle with plenty of warmth and soul – especially on the mellower numbers, which dominate side two of the record, and really make this one worth having! Mellow tracks include "For The Love Of You (parts 1 & 2)", "Sensuality (parts 1 & 2)", and "Make Me Say It Again (parts 1 & 2)" – and funkier numbers include "Fight The Power (parts 1 & 2)", "The Heat Is On (parts 1 & 2)", and "Hope You Feel Better Love (parts 1 & 2)". ✨✧ Isley BrothersInside You/Real Deal ... CD
T Neck/BGO (UK), 1981/1982. New Copy ... $8.99
Two early 80s groovers from the Isleys – on one great CD! Inside You is a strong extension of the group's funky 70s style – moving into a more compressed mode that had been taking hold of the group's style over the past few albums, giving them a smoother finish, but one that actually brought out some even more soulful feelings from their overall work. As always, we dig the mellow cuts best – especially the two part "Don't Hold Back Your Love", and the stepper "Welcome Into My Heart". Other tracks include "First Love", "Baby Hold On", and "Love Zone" and "Inside You". The Real Deal is authentic 80s grooving from the Isleys – mostly an album of upbeat, electro-grooving numbers that change up the style a bit more from their 70s funk work. But as usual for this period, they actually sound best on the ballads – clocking in with the sweet slow tune "All In My Lovers Eyes", and sounding even nicer on the anthemic "I'll Do It All For You" – a great little track with a bubbling, steppish groove. Other tracks include "The Real Deal", "Stone Cold Lover", "Are You With Me", and "Under The Influence". CD

T Neck/CBS, Late 70s. Used ... $1.99
An excellent collection of work by The Isley Brothers – featuring some of our favorite smooth funky tracks from the 70s by the group! The set's a nice one because it includes a lot of good tracks that are on albums that aren't that great all the way through, so you get a good album of all high-quality tracks, with cuts like "Between The Sheets", "That Lady", "Groove With You", "For The Love Of You", "Footsteps In The Dark", "It's Your Thing", "Fight The Power" and "Live It Up". ✨✧ Isley BrothersLive It Up ... CD
T Neck/Columbia, 1974. Used ... Out Of Stock
Mid 70s genius from the Isley Brothers – a record that has them firmly hitting their superstar mode with a fantastic blend of mellow soul and guitar-heavy funk! The record's got a sense of class, care, and poise that's head and shoulders above most of the group's contemporaries – an ability to rock out one minute, then slow things down for a beautiful ballad the next – all while maintaining enough credibility to still hold onto older fans, yet also reach out to a much bigger audience in the mainstream. Titles include the sublime "Ain't I Been Good To You (parts 1 & 2)", a long track with a sinister bassline and a dark groove that really makes it great, a great cover of "Hello It's Me" that's even better than the original, and the key mellow cuts "Lover's Eve" and "Brown Eyed Girl" – plus "Live It Up (parts 1 & 2)", "Need A Little Taste Of Love", and "Midnight Sky (parts 1 & 2)". CD also features a bonus track – "Live It Up", recorded live on the Dinah Shore TV show! CD
(Out of print and still sealed.)

T Neck, Early 70s. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Classic Isley Brothers – and a track that's way better than it should be! The group takes the CSN snoozer "Love the One You're With", and they turn it into a very strident soul groover, with lots of great musical elements that hint at the direction they would take later in the 70s. The flip's great, too – and has a very nice chugging funk sound! 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Average White BandAverage White Band ... LP
Atlantic, 1974. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
AWB's first for Atlantic – and a nice slice of funk that proves that they can mix it up with the best groups of the 70s! The record's got plenty of sweet electric keyboards over smooth funky basslines – and as the years go by, the band's white boy vocals don't sound nearly as bad as we remember them. And besides, when they play their instruments so nicely – how can you hold the singing against them? Includes the killer classic "Pick Up The Pieces", sampled more times than we can remember – plus "You Got It", "Just Wanna Love You Tonight", "Person To Person", and a nice remake of the Isley Brothers' "Work To Do". LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes the printed inner sleeve. Cover has light wear and some aging.)

✨✧ Main IngredientEuphrates River ... LP
RCA, 1974. Very Good- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Although the Main Ingredient were best known for their early 70's singles, this album from '74 is a wonderfully complex batch of tunes that shows that the group were taking a cue from some of their hipper contemporaries, and pushing past a stock hit formula. Bert DeCoteaux was still arranging, but the group produced themselves, giving the record a sexy funky feeling in the best parts, not that dissimilar from some of Marvin Gaye's work, or records by groups like The Isley Brothers or The O'Jays. Includes great versions of two Seals & Crofts songs – "Summer Breeze" and "Euphrates" – both a perfect example of this style, as is "Happiness Is Just Around The Bend" – plus a great reading of Willie Hutch's "California My Way", which has a super-dope sample at the beginning. Of course, the album still includes material like their hit " "Just Don't Want To Be Lonely", a sweetly style AM radio pop hit in the band's best style of earlier years. LP, Vinyl record album

Marlon SaundersEnter My Mind ... CD
Soul Brother (UK), 2003. New Copy ... $9.99
A stunning debut from singer Marlon Saunders – a fantastic male vocalist who's gonna be huge! Marlon's got a smooth and seductive vocal approach that really takes us back to mellow 70s Isley Brothers, later ballad tracks from the O'Jays, and even a bit of the best work from Marvin Gaye – classic-styled vocals that have a universal soul appeal, sung with a confidence and depth of expression that's rare for male singers in the current age! Marlon's known for his earlier work with the group Jazzhole, but on this set, he moves way ahead of that group – emerging as a bright new soul star to rival the work of D'Angelo or Maxwell! Titles include "Inspiration", "You Move Me", "Enter My Mind", "Keep Doin What Ya Do", "Stone Out Of Hope", and "If It's Magic". CD

✨✧ Johnnie TaylorWho's Making Love (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Stax/Craft, 1968. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Killer soul from Johnnie Taylor, and really his first major LP! The record was Johnnie's second for Stax – and although the first one was good, this was the record that really had Johnnie hitting that funky bluesy sound that became his trademark into the 70s. The title cut – "Who's Making Love" – is a monster groover with a funky hook that was covered instantly by many jazz combos, and which riffs along with an Isley Brothers-ish kind of sound. The album features loads of other tasty numbers, too – all produced by Al Jackson and Don Davis – and featuring the cuts "Poor Make Believer", "I'd Rather Drink Muddy Water", "Can't Trust Your Neighbor", and "Payback Hurts". ✨✧ Beau WilliamsNo More Tears (with bonus track) ... CD
Capitol/FTG, 1986. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The last in Beau Williams' great run of albums for Capitol Records in the mid 80s – and a sweet little set that equally balances quiet storm ballads with more uptempo groovers! Williams is one of the great unsung male vocal acts of his generation – and he's got a great way here of putting over a mellow track with a level of care and sensitivity that weren't always that common in mainstream soul at the time – a approach that reminds us more of Marvin Gaye or The Isley Brothers in years before, than you might guess from the date of the album. Production is by William Reinhart, McFadden & Whitehead, Williams, and others – and titles include "I Found A Love", "All Because Of You", "There's Something About You", "Give Me Up", "Don't Be Gone To Say", "No More Tears", and "Been Too Long". CD also features a bonus instrumental version of "Give Me Up". CD

VariousHow Many Roads – Black America Sings Bob Dylan ... CD
Ace (UK), 1960s/1970s. New Copy ... $12.99 18.99
The oft-covered Bob Dylan songbook never sounds so soulful – classic interpretations of Dylan's canon from a great, far reaching roster of black artists – from the the ever-stirring Staple Singers, southern soul heroes Howard Tate and OV Wright, charismatic country soul from Brook Benton, great gender role perspective flipped versions by Nina Simone and Patti LaBelle, a funky tamborine take by Con Funk Shun and much more! It's another excellent entry in the Songwriter Series from Ace Records, extra excellent in that it takes an obvious hero of 60s Songwriter – and actually pulls together songs that'll take you by surprise for their depth – whether you treasure Dylan, deep 60s & 70s solo & group R&B, funk, folk soul...or all of the above! ✨✧ VariousLand Of 1000 Dances – All Twistin Edition ... CD
Ace (UK), Early 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Plenty of twisting here – and a surprisingly hip little collection that takes a look at the many incarnations of the famous dance craze in the early 60s! If you think you've already got the twist sussed out, then think again – because there's way more to the style than just big hits by Hank Ballard and Chubby Checker – as many other twist-based numbers have a raunchy, R&B-soaked sort of groove – a gritty, nitty sound that makes this package way more of a soul-styled collection than you might expect, with a few bluesy moments thrown in as well! As usual with Ace, the notes do a great job of illuminating this special moment in music – and most tracks in the package are from the years 1961 and 1962 – with titles that include "Twisting On Bandstand" by The Sprouts, "Mama's Doin The Twist" by Linda Hopkins, "Ya Ya Twist" by Petula Clark, "Twistin With Linda" by The Isley Brothers, "No Twistin On Sunday" by The Zircons, "Twist Around The Clock" by Clay Cole, "Twist & Freeze" by Billy Huhn & The Casuals, "Twist A St Tropez" by Les Chats Sauvages, "The Lone Twister" by The Lone Twister, "The Twist To End All Twists" by Robby Lawrence, "Do The President Twist" by Lula Reed & Freddy King, and "The Monster Twist" by Tyrone A'Saurus & The Cro-Magnons.
