IntrudersBest Of The Intruders ... LP
Philadelphia International/Legacy, 1970s. Sealed ... $16.99
A beautifully-done collection of work from The Intruders – a brilliant package that follows the group from early harmony days into some of their more sophisticated grooves for Philly International in the 70s! The Intruders have a sound that's unlike anyone else we can think of – a sound that's sweet, but which has a kind of rasp at the back too – a really human, almost hesitating quality to the vocals that makes just about anything they do come out sounding wonderful. The set begins with early singles for the Gamble label, then runs up to a few key album cuts from the 70s – titles that include "Love Is Like A Baseball Game", "Slow Drag", "When We Get Married", "Mother & Child Reunion", "United", "Together", "I'll Always Love My Mama (part 1)", "I Wanna Know Your Name", "Sad Girl", "She's A Winner", "A Nice Girl Like You", "Plain Ol Fashioned Girl", and "To Be Happy Is The Real Thing". LP, Vinyl record album
(Sealed copy! Cover has a 'Get Down With The Philly Sound' sticker.)

IntrudersSuper Hits ... LP
Gamble/Philadelphia International, Late 60s/1973. Sealed ... $7.99
A seminal collection of work from this legendary Philly group – a set that brings together some of their best singles from the early days – all in a hip 70s package! Despite mid 70s issue of the album, most of the work here come from the group's late 60s start – and they represent a new step forward in harmony soul from the Philly scene – a way of putting over a tune that set the stage for countless other sweet soul groups to come, but which is still handled best by The Intruders! Gamble & Huff produced these early gems, and arrangements are by Bobby Martin and Joe Renzetti – both of whom really know how to mix the mellow with the mighty. Titles include "Cowboys To Girls", "Sad Girl", "Me Tarzan, You Jane", "Love Is Like A Baseball Game", "Slow Drag", "Together", "(We'll Be) United", 'When We Get Married", "Sad Girl", "A Love That's Real", "Friends No More", "Gonna Be Strong", and "Check Yourself". LP, Vinyl record album
(Still sealed, with Nice Price sticker.)

Paul GlassLady In A Cage ... CD
Paramount/Kritzerland, 1964. Used ... $11.99
A wonderfully striking soundtrack for a very offbeat film – an early 60s tale about a woman who gets trapped in her home elevator, and harassed by a band of intruders! The score by Paul Glass has all the right elements to live up to the tension in the story – beginning with those arch woodwind passages you might hear on some of the best 60s dramatic scoring, especially on TV – intercut with some more vibrant percussion passages, and building strongly as the soundtrack moves on – indicating the psychological trauma of the main character. Titles include "We're Gonna Kill Ya", "Wino Cuts Hand/The Wine Rack", "Pozeganie Malcolma", "Crawl To Freedom", "The Landing", and "Fall From The Cage". CD

VariousBirth Of Soul Vol 4 – Late 50s To Early 60s Black Music That Heralded The Soul Explosion ... CD
Kent (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $9.99 18.99
This series keeps on getting better and better – and this fourth installment may well be the best illustration to date of the birth of soul music! As hinted by the title, the collection features tracks from the late 50s and early 60s that marked a key transition from earlier R&B and blues into soul music – work that pulled a bit more strongly from the church than some of its predecessors, and which also put over a groove that was a bit more sophisticated, sometimes a bit more polished – all to set the stage for the huge soul music explosion to come later in the 60s! A number of the artists here are familiar from R&B years, but they're represented by tracks that show a real change in their styles – and others are known from later successes, but stand out here with early work that's a lot more formative – making them a perfect choice for the collection. CD features 24 tracks in all – including "Come On & Stomp" by Marv Johnson, "Lil Valley" by The MMs & The Peanuts, "Bossa Nova Baby" by Tippie & The Clovers, "Irresistible You" by Bobby Peterson, "Take Your Heart" by Betty Willis, "Puff" by Kenny Lynch, "Jack Be Nimble" by The Intruders, "A Clock That's Got No Hands" by Della Reese, "I Came Running" by Wade Flemons, "You'd Be Crying Too" by The Matadors, "The Gypsy Said" by The Fiestas, "Please Don't Cry Anymore" by Ketty Lester, "Pretty Little Girl Next Door" by Bobby Day, and "Trouble I've Had" by Clarence Ashe. ✨✧ VariousMoro No Brasil – Brazil's Finest Funk, Soul & Percussive Music ... CD
Milan, 2003. Used ... Out Of Stock
Brazilian music from the ground up – a fascinating array of recordings made as part of the film Moro No Brasil, presented in all their gritty brilliance! The focus here is on the music of the people – recorded either live in the streets or at Mika's Bar, as part of an all-star performance done for the movie! It might be tempting to tag the effort as kind of a Brazilian version of the Buena Vista Social Club, but there's a real difference here in that the music here is still very much "alive" and part of Brazilian culture today – and not just a relic of the past preserved by a few conscientious intruders. Styles are a mix of samba, bossa, and many other rootsier modes – and titles include "Cirandar" by Seu Jorge, "Juizo Final" by Zenith & Velha Guarda, "Sorrir De Mim" by Walter Alfaiate, "Wauica" by Alemberg Quindines, "Voar No Balao" by Ze Neguinho, "Mulher Do Corno Rico E A Do Corno Pobre" by Caju & Castanha, "Baile Funk Ao Vivo" by Ivo Meirelles & Funk N Lata, and "Brasis" by Gabriel Moura. ✨✧ VariousNothing But A House Party – The Birth Of The Philly Sound 1967 to 1971 ... CD
Kent (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $9.99 18.99
Some folks might associate Philadelphia soul with the famous Gamble & Huff productions of the 70s disco years – but the city was already overflowing with great music in the years before Philadelphia International – as you'll hear in this totally groovy set! Philly was making as much great soul music in the 60s as Detroit, Chicago, and New York – thanks to an earlier musical framework that was set up by the city's big pop hits of the late 50s – which provided plenty of labels, studios, and other facilities for Philly's ever-growing array of soul talents, too – so much so that by the end of the 60s, the city was turning into a destination for singers outside of town – almost as much of a musical magnet as studios in Memphis or Muscle Shoals! This set does a great job of bringing together both aspects of that scene – wonderful homegrown talent, mixed with outsiders to really took off in the new Philly sound of the 60s – a joyous, positive, upbeat approach that worked wonderfully well for a variety of artists. Titles include "Your Fool Still Loves You" by Oscar Weathers, "It's All Over But The Shouting" by George Tindley, "You've Been Untrue" by The Delfonics, "Ain't Nothing But A House Party" by The Show Stoppers, "Peace To You Brother" by Lou Johnson, "Christine" by Executive Suite, "Help Me" by Honey & The Bees, "You Got What I Need" by Freddie Scott, "Rainmaker" by The Moods, "Keep On Striving" by Moses Smith, "That's The Price You Have To Pay" by Brenda & The Tabulations, "What You Gave Up" by The Continental 4, "Every Day Is A Holiday" by The Intruders, "Standing In The Darkness" by The Ethics, and "Girl You're Too Young" by Len Barry.
