✨✧ Pepper Adams10 to 4 At The 5 Spot ... LP
Riverside, 1958. Sealed ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Tremendous work from saxophonist Pepper Adams – quite possibly one of his most hard-blowing sets on record! The album's a live date, recorded at the legendary Five Spot – and the group here is a swinging one with plenty of soul jazz touches – a combo that includes a young Bobby Timmons on piano, plus Donald Byrd on trumpet, Doug Watkins on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums – all playing together at the height of their youthful powers! But even amidst all those heavyweights, Pepper Adams is clearly the star of the set – playing with a tone that's unbelievable – almost more tenor-like than a baritone sax, and filled with feeling throughout, even on the mellower moments. Donald Byrd sits out on one track, leaving Adams to dominate the ballad "You're My Thrill" – but he returns to the fold in tight formation on versions of "Hastings Street Bounce", "Yourna", "Tis", and "The Long Two/Four". ✨✧ Miles DavisFacets No 1 ... LP
CBS, 1956/1958/1962. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Import collection of some more obscure Miles moments from the late 50s Columbia years! There's 4 tracks recorded with the orchestra of Michel Legrand – and players that include Coltrane, Phil Woods, Jerome Richardson, and Bill Evans: "Jitterbug Waltz", "Round Midnight", "Wild Man Blues", and "Django". 2 tracks from a recording by the Brass Ensemble Of The Jazz & Classical Music Society, one led by John Lewis, the other by Gunther Schuller, are surprisingly wonderful – very much in the mode of Miles' work with Gil Evans, with a similar glistening sound on Miles' trumpet, and warm chromatic washes of sound underneath to provide the perfect soloing vehicle. And there are 4 numbers, a pair each from the Coltrane/Garland incarnation of the quintet, "Sweet Sue" & "Budo", and a transitional sextet from 1962, "Devil May Care" & "Blue Xmas". The record does include the 12 and a half minute reading of "Zombie" that was on the original LP – but then it's also got "Monkey Banana" and "Everything Scatter". ✨✧ Red GarlandGroovy ... LP
Prestige, 1956. Sealed ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Long tracks and plenty of room to move around – a perfect setting for the classic sound of the Red Garland Trio on Prestige! Despite the title, the album's not so much groovy as it is lyrically beautiful and filled with sensitivity – a key bridge between piano players of the mainstream in the years before Garland, and some of the bigger, bolder names that would rise up during the 60s soul jazz years. Rhythm is by Paul Chambers on bass and Art Taylor on drums – and the longer tracks give Chambers plenty of room to express his unique talents on the bass. Titles include "Gone Again", "Hey Now", "Will You Still Be Mine", "What Can I Say Dear", and "C-Jam Blues". LP, Vinyl record album

Wardell GrayWardell Gray Memorial Vol 1 ... LP
Prestige, Early 50s. Sealed ... $19.99
One of the best-ever documents of the young genius of tenorist Wardell Gray – exactly the kind of music that shows why he was one of the biggest and best of the bop saxophonists – before he was taken away from us all too soon! The material here was originally issued on 78s or 45s, and comes together as a great full length representation of Gray at his best – and on this first volume, Wardell plays tenor in one group with Al Haig on piano and Roy Haynes on drums – on titles that include "Easy Living", "Twisted", and "Southside". Another combo features Phil Hill on piano – on "Treadin", "Grayhound", and "Blue Gray". And the last combo is Teddy Charles' West Coasters – with Charles on vibes, Frank Morgan on alto, and Sonny Clark on piano – the last two of whom make their debut on the record! Heaven 17Luxury Gap ... LP
BEF/Virgin (UK), 1983. Very Good ... $1.99
Heaven 17 soften up their politics a bit with this second album (yet still address class inequality issues with the title!) – but they also manage to replace their Marxist agenda with some groovier, more soul-based tunes – just the kind of material that helped push them out of import obscurity into more of a crossover market in the US! The album's fondly remembered for the electro dancefloor numbers "Temptation", "Come Live With Me", and "Let Me Go" – all of which stand a cut above the work of their predecessors Human League, and show an ability to go past simple electronic pop riffs – even if they are all pretty darn catchy! Other tracks are great too – and the record has a joyous, optimistic quality that's every bit the best side of this scene from the early 80s generation. Titles include "We Live So Fast", "Best Kept Secret", "Crushed By The Wheels Of Industry", and "Key To The World". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Sun RaNuits De La Fondation Maeght Vol 1 ... LP
Shandar (France), 1970. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A legendary performance by Sun Ra & The Arkestra – and for good reason, too! The album was initially issued on a hard-to-find French import, but has cropped up in other formats over the years – and it's a stellar live date that really illustrates the group at their soulful best! Ra definitely goes past the usual here – and focuses the energy of the ensemble in a way that makes the whole extended performance very captivating throughout – especially in the way the group can get totally free at some spots, and perform with subtle, soulful tones at others. The lineup includes Marshall Allen on alto and flute, John Gilmore on tenor, Pat Patrick on baritone and bass clarinet, Danny Davis on alto and flute, James Jacson on clarinet and flute, Kwame Hadi on trumpet, Danny Thompson on baritone and bassoon, Alan Silva on bass, Rashied Salim on vibes, and vocals by June Tyson, Gloristeena Knight, and Verta Grosvenor. Ra himself plays moog, piano, organ, electric piano, and "intergalactic instruments"! Volume one includes an excellent long track called "The Cosmic Explorer", which has Ra going crazy on the moog, plus the shorter tracks "Star Gazers", "Shadow World", and "Enlightenment". ✨✧ Art TaylorTaylor's Wailers ... LP
Prestige, 1957. Sealed ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A well-titled set from drummer Art Taylor – given that he's got some very heavy-duty horn power on the session, all of whom are heavy-duty wailers! Most of the record features a lineup with Charlie Rouse on tenor, Jackie McLean on alto, and Donald Byrd on trumpet – all taking off beautifully from some simple, rhythmic modes laid down by Taylor on drums, Ray Bryant on piano, and Wendell Marshall on bass. Most tracks are quite long – and include "Batland", "Cubano Chant", "Off Minor", "Well You Needn't", and "Exhibit A". One more track changes things slightly – and goes for a group that features John Coltrane on tenor, with Red Garland on piano and Paul Chambers on bass – a version of "CTA" that cooks every bit as nicely as other work on the set, although with less horns! The last album from the legendary early run of Agitation Free – and a set that definitely shows the group at the top of their game! The tracks are long, but never rambling – jamming, but never in a noodly way – and these guys really show why their contribution to German prog was so important at the time – able to handle some of the minimal progressions of their contemporaries, while finding a way to soar forward too – yet always with a sound that's completely fresh and free of cliche! Keyboards and guitar spiral out wonderfully together, and looped a bit in some really great ways – and titles include "Soundpool", "Laila II", and "Looping IV". LP, Vinyl record album

Rashied Ali QuintetFirst Time Out – Live At Slug's ... LP
Survival, 1967. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $39.99 46.99
A fantastic rare performance from drummer Rashied Ali – a musician who's best known for his work with John Coltrane during his later years, but who steps out here beautifully as a leader on his own! Ali's tremendous here – effortlessly non-stop on the drums – a player who seems unable to rest even for a minute – with that sense of boundless imagination that really helped set Coltrane free on their recordings together – fused here with contributions from a very unusual quintet that includes Ramon Morris on tenor, Dewey Johnson on trumpet, Stanley Cowell on piano, and Reggie Johnson on bass! The energy is maybe a rawer step to the side of the ESP generation, and definitely points the way towards the loft jazz scene that Rashied would help form and be such an important part of in the 70s – on titles that include "Study For As Salaam Alikum", "Composition 1", "Ballade", and "Composition 2". RCA/Mr Bongo (UK), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
An amazing bit of Brazilian funk – and the best album ever by this exciting soulful duo! The record's their first, and it's got a crackling intensity that you don't always find on their other albums – a groove that mixes hard samba with bass-heavy funk, with a sound that makes them one of the most important forces of the Samba Soul generation! There's lots here to love if you like the heavy grooves of Jorge Ben or Tim Maia – but the duo also have a really great approach of their own – especially in the way they'll trade voices back and forth, over grooves that also have plenty of back/forth action too! The record includes the amazing heavy piano/percussion jammer "Hipnose", plus the great cuts "Voce Abusou", "Kabaluere", "Se Quiser Valer", "Deus O Salve", "Nord West", and "Dalena". Cadet, 1970. Sealed ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A damn legendary record from the last years of Chess Records – and for good reason, too! Archie Whitewater were a group that was years ahead of its time – a rock combo, but one with real genre-crossing sensibilities that made them perfect for the experimental styles at the Cadet/Concept side of Chess – the same slice of the musical universe that gave us Rotary Connection and important productions from Charles Stepney! The sound here has some surprisingly soulful elements at times – especially the instrumentation, which features some great break moments that get nice and funky, and strands of soulful jazz and blues that really make the music way different than most other groups we can think of – or maybe a bit like a rare elite who shared such visionary territory with Archie Whitewater, such as Shades Of Joy on their first Fontana record. The keyboards and sax lines are as great as the drums – and the vocals have a melancholy undercurrent that's a really refreshing change from some of the overly-postured modes you'd get from other groups in 1970. Titles include the sublime sample cut "Cross Country" – but there's loads of other nice ones with the same stripped-down "Dusty Fingers" sort of groove – and other titles include "Life Is A River", "Home Again", "Lament For The Walking Dead", "Seacoast", "Country To the City", "Friends & Neighbors", and "Mist Of The Early Morning". ✨✧ Robert AshleyPrivate Parts ... LP
Lovely, 1977. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of the most important records from composer Robert Ashley – and one that's got a compact approach that helped it circulate a lot more than some of Ashley's larger operas! This piece is very much like those – with Ashley's unique spoken approach – part poetry, part performance art – but the sound is more stripped-down, and in the spirit of the young downtown New York generation of Laurie Anderson and Phillip Glass – served up with great instrumental help from contemporary Blue Gene Tyranny, who plays piano, moog, and clavinet – with some additional tablas for accompaniment! The whole thing was recorded at the important Center For Contemporary Music on the west coast, at Mills College – and is almost a Bay Area answer to some of the more compelling art records from the New York scene. The record is divided into 2 parts – "The Park" and "The Backyard" – both filled with a hypnotic mix of voice, keyboards, and tablas! LP, Vinyl record album

A seminal early moment from the legendary Albert Ayler – an important session recorded overseas in Copenhagen – where enthusiasm for Ayler's music caught fire more strongly than in the US! The group's got an edge that's maybe even sharper than some of Ayler's ESP material, but no less powerful – with Don Cherry on cornet, Gary Peacock on bass, and Sunny Murray on drums – working through tremendous readings of six Ayler classics that include "Ghosts", "Children", "Holy Spirit", "Vibrations" and "Mothers". Brian Blade's a drummer, but the set is definitely the work of a warm fellowship in jazz – a well-matched group of players that includes Myron Walden on alto, Melvin Butler on tenor and soprano, John Cowherd on acoustic piano and Wurlitzer, and Christopher Thomas on bass – all working through mostly original material by Blade that has this slow burn and soulful sparkle – often mellow, but without every being too laidback – and produced by Daniel Lanois with a really great overall sense of sound. ✨✧ Art BlakeyMoanin' (75th anniversary edition) ... LP
Blue Note, 1958. New Copy (reissue)... $20.99
One of Art Blakey's first true moments of genius! This transitional version of the Jazz Messengers included two parts – Lee Morgan and Bobby Timmons – of the holy Morgan/Shorter/Timmons trilogy, and it's also got the added bonus of Benny Golson on tenor, who was at the height of his power at this point. The record really shines in ways that few Blakey albums shone since his days with Horace Silver – in that it's a forum for fresh new writing, most importantly Golson's landmark compositions "Blues March" and "Along Came Betty", and Timmons' instant classic "Moanin". The whole album's wonderful, though, and Golson's edgey modernism adds a strong dimension to the group's usual soulful romping groove! (And in fact, as a tribute to the group's success, the album was initially named Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers, but quickly retitled Moanin in this version, after the big hit single!) The landmark debut of Mary J Blige – a record that not only did a great job of blending underground hip hop and mainstream soul sensibilities – but maybe also opened the door for the Neo Soul revolution to come! Mary comes on here with a fresh new vision in female soul – one that's informed by the youth and upfront energy of the hip hop female MCs that preceded her – but with a depth that also makes Blige sort of the new Aretha Franklin for the end of the century – a deep soul singer, but one who's equally at home in the streets and the studio. Important production is by a young Sean Combs – some of his first great work on record – and the set also features guest appearances from Busta Rhymes, Little Shawn, Grand Puba, Erick Sermon, and CL Smooth. Titles include "Real Love", "Sweet Thing", "Love No Limit", "You Remind Me", "Reminisce", "What's The 411", "I Don't Want To Do Anything", "Changes I've Been Going Through", "Slow Down", and "My Love". One of the best debuts in the history of hip hop – and one of the most important albums the genre ever produced! Criminal Minded is a landmark for a number of reasons. Among the biggest is, of course, that it was recorded with the late great DJ Scott La Rock – and he was soon to fall prey to the very street violence that BDP documented with such raw brilliance by KRS-One. Importance aside, Criminal Minded is simply a great, timeless record that no true fan of gritty classic hip hop should be without. The track list alone is a full chapter in the hip hop book of legends – with tunes like "Poetry", "Elementary", "South Bronx", "Super-Hoe", "Bridge is Over", and the "P is Free" remix. A funky trio with a really unique sort of vibe – vocals that are somewhere in the sweet soul territory of the early 70s, set to spacious instrumentation that's got some nicely trippy touches! The core lineup features guitar, bass, and drums next to the harmonized vocals of Kevin and Tony Martin – but Leon "El" Michels produced the set, and also adds in a bit of keyboards – and the whole record really benefits from the open-ended sound he can bring to an affair of this nature! Things are never overdone, and these guys never try to sound too forcedly soulful – really finding the best qualities in their vocals, and reminding us that sometimes the right fit is the most important thing of all. One of Dee Dee Bridgewater's greatest jazz albums, and a very important record in her career – as it marked a shift back to straight jazz vocals, after years of working in a more R&B inflected mode. The album's recorded in Paris, where Dee Dee's spent an awful lot of time over the years, and you can feel that familiarity in the way she presents the material – easily slipping back into a jazz vocal mode, working before an appreciative audience without any thoughts of crossover popularity, hitting that proud, strong, and free style that's been carrying her well for a number of years now. Brown was a really important singer with these sides – still partly in the class and poise of some of the jazz-tinged vocalists that came before her – but also able to open up with a deeper soul vibe that paved the way for Aretha Franklin and so many other singers to come in the second half of the 60s! The production and presentation of these tracks is wonderful, too – great songwriting, and top-shelf studio charts that only lift, and never drown the brilliance of Maxine's unique voice. Titles include "One In A Million", "It's Torture", "Let Me Give You My Lovin", "Yesterday's Kisses", "Oh No Not My Baby", "Gotta Find A Way", "Baby Cakes", "Since I Found You", "It's Gonna Be Alright", and the completely fantastic "If You Gotta Make A Fool Of Somebody". That's an angry-looking James Coburn on the cover – a tipoff that you're in for something really special on the record – one of the best-ever soundtracks from the mighty Roy Budd, the man who also gave the world the superb score for Get Carter! There's a few elements here that echo the music for that famous film – including some inventive percussion, moody basslines, and a great use of space – and the lineup of musicians features some surprising contributions from important British jazz artists – including Kenny Baker on trumpet and Tubby Hayes on tenor, Frank Barber on percussion, and Jeff Clyne on bass – plus Roy himself on Fender Rhodes, clavinet, harpsichord, and piano! This is the first-ever extended presentation of music from the soundtrack, a superb treat throughout – with titles that include "Mr Easy", "Death In The Shower", "Alright Alex", "Find A Solution", "The Deal", "Never Think Twice", "Waiting For Murder", "Main Theme", "Somebody's Going To Have To Kill Him", and "Borrowed Time". ESP, 1966. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
The first-ever record to capture the amazing voice of William S Burroughs – the author who helped transform fiction forms in the 60s, but also somewhat of a public figure too – thanks to albums like this! The set's was recorded in France, and given wider circulation in the US by seminal indie ESP Records – and the record presents Burroughs reading from his important novels Naked Lunch and The Nova Express. There's less of the cutup and experimental recordings of other later Burroughs records – but given that the books were both written under the influence of those modes, even the reading of the text still has a very unusual quality – especially given the author's incredible voice. Atlantic, Mid 50s. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A host of early classics from the young Ray Charles – tracks that were some of his most important singles for Atlantic Records, from a time when Ray was really finding his groove – issued here as a full length set in the classic Atlantic "rock & roll" series in the late 50s! These are the tunes that really put Charles on the map – and many have a raw, vibrant quality that's a lot more R&B than some of his later work – hard-burning numbers that move at a mighty quick pace – mixed with a few that show the jazzier approach in years to come. Titles include "Sinner's Prayer", "Mess Around", "Greenbacks", "I Got A Woman", "A Fool For You", "Losing Hand", "Ain't That Love", "Drown In My Own Tears", "This Little Girl Of Mine", and "Don't You Know". Four slices of genius from this important German jazz festival of the 60s – one of the leading showcases for the best in avant garde and experimental music! The sounds here are as stunning as the lineup – maybe even more so, as there's some nicely-unfamiliar, surprisingly collaborative passages going on – all of which really illuminate the studio music by these groundbreaking artists! The set begins with "Andalusian Proverb" – a beautiful showcase for the dynamic vocals of Jeanne Lee, as she sings with Gunter Hampel on vibes, Albert Mangelsdorff on trombone, and Pierre Courbois on drums. "Cubis" features a sublime trio with Marion Brown on alto, Peter Kowald on bass, and John Stevens on drums – and that rhythm duo also supports "Jepa", which features Mangelsdorff on trombone and Evan Parker on soprano sax – and "Relationship", which also features Parker – as well as Don Cherry on trumpet and Buschi Niebergall on second bass. This is a repackaged version of an album that was originally issued under Cecil Taylor's name, under the title Hard Drive (and later Stereo Drive, or something like that). The record brings together two of the late 50's most promising modernists – Cecil Taylor and John Coltrane – in a group that includes Kenny Dorham, Chuck Israels, and Louis Hayes. The music is a startling mix of styles – as Taylor's heavy piano clashes noisily with Trane's free flowing lines on the tenor. It doesn't always work, but it's well worth a listen, and stands as a critical meeting of two important talents that were both best known on their own. Tracks include "Shifting Down", "Double Clutching", and "Just Friends". LP, Vinyl record album

The 2LP set features 3 sides worth of Circle material – including "Quartet Piece 1, 2, & 3", and the shorter "Percussion Piece". Brilliant early work by Miles Davis – some of his first truly important sessions to appear under his own name, recorded with players that include Jimmy Heath, JJ Johnson, Gil Coggins, Art Blakey, Kenny Clarke, Jackie McLean, and Oscar Pettiford. Tunes are shorter, and perhaps more boppish, than you might expect from some of Miles' other 50s work – but in a way that still allows for many moments of lyrical beauty, and that brilliantly cool sound of his which forever changed the sound of jazz trumpet. The album's got a wonderfully unified feel – as it begins with long compositions that have a distinct Spanish-tinge (and not a Latin-tinge, which is an important distinction to the way the album progresses.) Evans' arrangements have a majesty that takes the songs to the next level – working them as lush, lively backings for Davis' equally majestic trumpet solos, some of the finest he ever recorded with large group backing. Great live material from one of the most important pairings in modern jazz – recorded during the last months that John Coltrane was working with the Miles Davis Quintet! Davis and Coltrane are working here on a live date from Copenhagen in March of 1960 – playing on 3 long tunes that really let both players open up and unfold in their own unique solo explorations – with that classic group that includes Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Jimmy Cobb on drums. Titles are all familiar ones from the Davis book – "So What", "All Blues", and "On Green Dolphin Street" – but the extended renditions offer more than a few surprises that make them well worth having. Desmond's best known as the icy alto behind Dave Brubeck's big records of the 50s, but by this point in his career, he'd developed a keen interest in Brazilian music – and was working at a level that was far more sophisticated than most other American jazzmen interested in Brazil. This incredible record features him working with the arrangements of Don Sebesky, and the Brazilian instrumentation of Edu Lobo, Airto, and Dorio Ferreira. The set's comprised almost entirely of tracks by Lobo and a young Milton Nasimento – and titles include "Faithful Brother", "From The Hot Afternoon", "Crystal Illusions", "October", "Catavento", and "Gira Girou" – all done in these amazing breezy versions that sound like nothing else we can think of! Billy EckstineMister B & The Band ... LP
Savoy, 1945/1946. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... $1.99
Amazing work from the early, legendary years of Billy Eckstine – that time when he was fronting one of the hippest backing groups a vocalist could hope to have! Eckstine's voice was already becoming the stuff of legend by the time of these recordings – but thanks to contributions from a host of famous boppers, his band was getting equal fame, too – a really legendary lineup that includes such greats as Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie,Kenny Dorham, and Fats Navarro on trumpets; Wardell Gray, Dexter Gordon, and Gene Ammons on tenor; Leo Parker on baritone; Art Blakey on drums; and many other huge names too! The band was virtually a school for a whole generation of jazzmen to come – allowing them to play together, get to know each other, and spin off in important small groups – much in the way the Kenton group a few years later allowed so much development on the west coast. And amidst all this great music, Billy's vocals have never sounded better – much bolder and hard-swinging than in later years! LP, Vinyl record album

Not the famous Faces of Rod Stewart/Ronnie Wood fame, but a really great group from mid 70s Nigeria – one with a spirit as youthful as their image on the cover, and a sound that's a nicely trippy blend of funk, psych, and other West African elements of the time! The group have some really great organ on most numbers – bubbling and burning next to the riffing guitar, and peppered with tenor, trumpet, and flute – while percussion does lots of heavy things at the bottom alongside the bass. Vocals are in the mix on most cuts, often sung by Rita Black – but the instrumental interplay is equally important, and really makes for a heady sound on the set. Takoma/4 Men With Beards, 1967. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The landmark 1967 Takoma version of Blind Joe Death – essentially a revised version of his debut LP – and a hugely influential record! Fahey's bluesy undercurrents showcase his love of early recorded music , but the Fahey's style is purely original. He's got these magical tones that cascade effortlessly off the heavily-plucked strings of his guitar – echoing older blues and folk modes, but never in a way that's stereotypical – and which is already woven through with the kind of sonorities that continued to make Fahey such an important artist over the years. Think of the set as a skewed version of American history – filtered through one mind and one set of hands – and you'll be well on the way to understanding the power of this music. The set features songs penned by Fahey, and redone versions of older material – and tracks include "St. Louis Blues", "Poor Boy Long Ways From Home", "John Henry", "Transcendental Waterfall", "Desperate Man Blues", "Sun Gonna Shine In My Back Door Someday Blues", and "On Doing An Evil Deed Blues". Restless/WEA, 1990. New Copy (reissue)... $11.99 21.98
An important pre-fame record from Flaming Lips – a set when all the right pieces were in place, but still finding the right way to come together – a bit like the way that most important UK psych bands of the 60s sounded in 1966! By that, we mean that there's equal parts garage and trippiness going on here – tighter songs than later, maybe a bit more upfront rock energy – which, at times, almost has these guys feeling like a psych version of The Replacements, or a group of that nature. Yet the Lips are clearly finding a way to state themselves quite clearly – carving out their own space on tunes that include "God Walks Among Us Now", "Shine On Sweet Jesus", "Stand In Line", "Take Meta Mars", "Five Stop Mother Superior Rain", "Rainin Babies", "Mountain Side", and a surprising cover of "What A Wonderful World". Demon (UK), 1980/1981. New Copy 3LP ... $74.99 82.99
Three Italian horror classics – packaged here in a single set! First up is Fabio Frizzi's score for Nella Citta Dei Morti Viventi/City Of The Living Dead – exactly the kind of set that shows why he was one of the true masters of Italian horror! The sounds here are a mix of electric and acoustic elements – but the latter are often played in offbeat ways that they really sound electric – making for a moody mix of music that goes way beyond the usual spare slasher keyboards! A few numbers use wordless vocals, while others have nicely stepping strings – and a beefier bassline comes into play on a few standout funk tracks as well. Titles include "Toward Dawn", "Fatti Misteriosi", "Apoteosi Del Mistero", "Occhi Di Brace", and "Verso L'Alba". Next is Frizzi's Beyond/E Tu Vivrai Nel Terrore L'Aldila – a very spooky soundtrack – and one that stands out as one of the best-remembered from this important second generation of Italian horror! The record's got less of the atonal orchestrations and funk/thriller modes of a few years before – and moves into the spare, eerie quality that John Carpenter helped usher in – with lots of crashing piano lines, atonal guitar parts, and weird descending chords that feel like they're going to suck you into the deep! There's some very nice and sparing use of synthesizer within the score – just the right bit to add a creepy edge, but maybe not as much as on other synth-heavy soundtracks from the time – and titles include "Voci Dal Nulla", "Oltre La Soglia", "Suono Aperto", "Verso L'Ignoto", and "Giro Di Blues". Walter Rizzati's score for Quella Villa Accanto Al Cimitero/House By The Cemetery has lots of keyboards – in a spare, spooky soundtrack from the early 80s Italian horror scene – a blood-dripping masterpiece from director Lucio Fulcio! Walter Rizzati's music here is heavy on the kinds of electric touches you'd hear from both Goblin or John Carpenter – and often paced at a level that's somewhere between the pair – not as jamming as Goblin, but a bit fuzzier than Carpenter – a blend that makes for some really wonderful numbers that are plenty creepy here on their own – even away from the images on the screen! There's plenty of great bits that creep up on you slowly – and others that jump mercilessly from dark corners – on titles that include "Quella Villa", "I Remember", "Incontro", "Blonk Monster", "Verso Il Terrore", "Voci Dal Terrore", "Tema Bambino", and "Chi Sta Arrivando". One of Erroll Garner's best-selling albums ever – a famous live date recorded in the mid 50s – and a record that's as important to his catalog as the classic Misty! Garner's playing before an apparently large audience, but the recording quality is still nice and clear – a strong focus on his amazing work on the keys of the piano – filled with rhythmic invention at every turn, in a way that can only be described as Garner-esque, and which still leaves us breathless after all these years. Despite the oft-heard power of the record, it's still a great one – worthy of discovery even if it wasn't a hit. This is the original US pressing of an album that was later issued by Capitol under a different name. Given that Capitol had recently linked up with the ever-growing EMI corporation in the early 60s, it was able to take advantage of the global catalog of the music giant, and managed to dip pretty heavily into the Brazilian Odeon catalog of tunes to cash in on the American popularity of bossa nova. This album was one of their bigger imports, and it features material originally recorded in Brazil, with Gilberto up front, backed by arrangements by Jobim. A wonderful collection of overlooked work from Vivien Goldman – a singer who's perhaps best known for her work in Flying Lizards, but who also had ties to other important post-punk acts of the time – including The Slits, On-U Sound, and Public Image – all of whom help out on these tracks! The music has a sweet blend of dubby rhythms and some colder currents too – and Goldman's lyrics are often a bit more personal than her music with Flying Lizards although no less compelling, too. John Lydon, Steve Beresford, and Keith Levene provide instrumentation on the first three tracks – "Lauderette", "Private Armies", and "PA Dub" – from an EP that was released on Rough Trade and 99 Records. Next up are the tracks "Her Story" and "The Window" – done by The Flying Lizards, with work from Beresford on piano and Viv Albertine on guitars. A classic session from the second wave of LA cool jazz of the 50s – headed up by French horn player John Graas, a player as important to his instrument as Gerry Mulligan was to the baritone sax! Like Mulligan, Graas was working with an instrument that you might normally think of as clunky – but he managed to swing with an incredibly fluid style – bringing the French horn into jazz with amazing skill, and working with groups of top-shelf LA players in a tightly arranged style that crackled with energy! Graas is working here in a slightly experimental "lab" style – mostly in smaller groups than some of his other recortdings, with a varied cast of characters including Paul Chambers, Philly Joe Jones, Jack Montrose, Paul Moer, Howard Roberts, Jimmy Giuffre and others. 8 tracks in all, including "Love Me Or Leave Me", "Cluster", "Mood", "Three Line Blues", "Chuggin'", "Trio", "Canon-Friar" and "Be My Guest". Jazzman (UK), 2020. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Fantastic work from saxophonist Muriel Grossmann – a player who's turning out to be as important to our generation as John Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders were to theirs! Over the course of a handful of albums, mostly issued under the radar, Muriel has been building up this tremendous legacy in spiritual jazz – long-spun tunes that feature her burning work on tenor over some very unique rhythmic conceptions – usually modal, but delivered in a way that's very fresh, and which often has guitar filling a place that's normally held by piano – so that Grossman's horn takes off in this fantastic flurry of rhythm and color! The folks at Jazzman Records, strong supporter of spiritual jazz in its many forms, have put together this set as a great collection of some of Miriam's earlier, self-released records – a great introduction, but also an essential slice of her genius – with five long tracks that include "Elevation", "Rising", "Chant", "Your Pace", and "Peace For All". Gruppo D'Improvvisazione Nuova ConsonanzaGruppo D'Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza (1965) ... LP
Cinevox (Italy), 1965. New Copy (reissue)... $21.99
One of the most obscure chapters in the career of Ennio Morricone – important avant garde work recorded in the mid 60s, just at a point when he was beginning to rise in soundtrack fame! The ensemble is a key Italian modernist group featuring Morricone, Giovanni Piazza, Mario Bertoncini, Egisto Macchi, Gualtiero Branch, Jesus Villa Rojo, and Francesco Evangelisti – mostly classically-trained musicians, but working here in a set of improvisations that are extremely spare, and which are very much at the lower end of the sound spectrum. Many of the sounds on the set are right at the frontiers of hearing – and others, while more present, disappear as quickly as they emerge – further enforcing the mystery and mood of the record. And while the overall style is quite different than Morricone's soundtrack work, the group was clearly a key testing ground for his ideas of sound and space that emerged later. Titles include "Soup", "Scratch", "Settimino", and "Eflot". LP, Vinyl record album

Columbia, 1968. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of Handy's important mind-expanding sets from the late 60s – a classic album with his group that featured a young Michael White on violin and Mike Nock on piano. White's work on the album is especially striking – very different from many other players in jazz, using the instrument in styles that evoke traditions of ancient stringed instruments, while also exploring new possibilities to use the violin as a sonic tool. As always, Nock's dark piano work is always a treat – especially on the beautiful compositions he contributed to the set. Titles include "Dance To The Lady", "Sanpaku", "Song Of Uranus", "Three In One", and "Projections". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Joe Harriott Double QuintetIndo-Jazz Suite (US pressing) ... LP
Atlantic, 1966. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
A lost classic from reedman Joe Harriott – and a landmark blending of jazz and world music! The core of the group is that quintet of West Indian alto player Joe Harriott – one of the leading lights of the British jazz scene of the 60s, and a dedicated modernist who was as important to England as Ornette Coleman was to America. Harriott's group is expanded by the addition of John Mayer's quintet of Indian musicians, who play in tandem with Harriott's group in a swirling blend of styles and sounds. The sound is spacey and trippy, with more elements of Indian music, than of jazz, but Harriott still manages to get some nice playing in. The whole album is one long suite of tracks, and titles include "Contrasts", "Raga Megha", and "Raga Gaud-Saranga". LP, Vinyl record album

Debbie HarryKookoo ... LP
Chrysalis, 1981. Near Mint- ... $9.99
A nice change in sound for Debbie Harry – thanks to Chic production from Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards – who really help the solo singer find a groove that's quite different than her work in Blondie! The style's a mixture of the funky club that Chic did so well, with elements that lean a bit more towards an early 80s rockish dancefloor – almost with a vibe that echoes some of the UK imports trickling over to these shores at the time, but with a definite New York vibe underneath! The setting gives Harry's vocals a great way to hit a more playful nature – that sound that was creeping in a bit in Blondie, but which some folks thought was wrong for the group – and Chris Stein is still on hand to bring in some street-sensitive riffing guitar. Titles include "Backfired", "Military Rap", "Oasis", "Surrender", "Chrome", "Jump Jump", and "The Jam Was Moving". LP, Vinyl record album

Beehive, 1980. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A superb album from vocalist Johnny Hartman – a later date, but one that we'd rank right up there with his important Impulse Records material of the 60s! In fact, the album's something of a return to greatness for Hartman – the kind of date that should have become a jazz standard, had it not gotten lost in the unfortunate fates of the short-lived Beehive label – who did a really tremendous job with this set. Rather than try to make Johnny a modern singer, in any sort of forced idiom – Beehive instead return him to the best modes of yore, and give him simple, soulful support from a small group that features Frank Wess on tenor and flute, Joe Wilder on trumpet, and Billy Taylor on piano. The track list is great – the kind of tunes that really bring out the sophisticated side of Hartman's talents, yet allow him to be sensitive, too – and titles include "Nobody Home", "Wave", "Easy Living", "I Could Write A Book", and "For All We Know". Lee HazlewoodNSVIPs – Not So Very Important People ... LP
Reprise, Mid 60s. Near Mint- ... $19.99
A pivotal record in the career of the great Lee Hazlewood – one that presents his personal with all its wit and warmth, yet also lets Lee take on some more mature topics as well! Most of the tunes start in the same sort of storytelling style as the album Trouble Is A Lonesome Town – but Hazlewood's a lot more tongue-in-cheek with his presentation, and directs the lyrics towards much more biting commentary – not entirely politically progressive, but definitely a larger sense of society beyond the individual. The cast of characters spin out wonderfully – the NSVIPS promised in the title – but they also tie together to present this portrait of an America just waking up in the mid 60s – able to see itself more clearly, yet without any of the overpowering emotions in years to come. That balance is Hazlewood's really special contribution to music at this point – and is given great shape here with help in the studio from Reprise Records whiz kid Jimmy Bowen. Titles include "Have You Made Any New Bombs Today", "I Ain't Gonna Be", "I Might Break Even", "Go Die Big City", "I Had A Friend", and "Everybody Calls Me Something". LP, Vinyl record album

One of the best records ever by Joe Higgs! Higgs is one of classic reggae's best songwriters and one of it's most distinctive voices – having written for, performed with or simply influenced some of the biggest names in the game – but his own great records didn't really crossover to the mainstream. While he doesn't pander to the mainstream, the strength of the songs, his soulful voice and the strains of American soul that lace the roots-ish vibe here are broadly appealing to say the least. As incredible as it is important! Landmark improvisations from two of the most important bassists in avant garde jazz – Dave Holland and Barre Phillips – two players each coming from two different scenes and styles, but working together here perfectly in a groundbreaking session of all-bass work! Holland plays a bit of cello on the album, and the interplay of the instruments is wonderful – open and flowing in the space of a young ECM, but with a lot more bite than other work for the label too. Ill Considered (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $18.99
This album's got a slightly expanded version of Ill Considered in place – but at a level that never strays far from the greatness that's made us love them right from the start! The core quartet, as usual, features the mighty Idris Rahman on tenor sax, Leon Brichard on bass, Emre Ramazanoglu on drums, and Satin Singh on percussion – and this time around, they also get added guitar from Steve Ashmore, who colors in the tunes with some gentle shades, but often in a way that only augments the subtle soundscape, and never seems to have him taking on too much of a role as a soloist – at least not with the burning fire of Rahman's tremendous tenor! Interestingly, the group also list a sixth member here – artist Leon De Boer on "brush pencil" – surprisingly important, although not in a musical way – as his artwork has really given the group a visual aesthetic on all of their albums. Titles include "Gunning", "Ward", "Waterfall", "Amber", "Predator", "One Single Leaf", and "Percolator". LP, Vinyl record album

This mighty quartet always have a fantastically live sound on their studio albums already – but in a concert setting, they seem to bristle even more with spontaneous creative energy – as you'll no doubt discover just a few minutes into the record! As you've no doubt read on these pages, we totally love these guys – and they're one of the most important bands currently setting the London jazz scene on fire – but with a vibe that will also stay strong in our ears for years to come – thanks to a soulful, spirit drenched blend of electric bass, drums, and percussion – all topped with tremendous work on tenor from Idris Rahman – a player whose raspy sense of soul puts him right up there with some of our 70s favorites from the spiritual scene. Yet these guys are never in an easy spiritual mode, either – as the rhythms and progressions are often very fresh, and very much their own – on titles that include "Djinn", "Delusion", "Upstart", "Sunflower", "Nada Brahma", and "Long Way Home". WeJazz (Finland), 2019. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $26.99
The long-overdue return of a combo that had a huge impact on the sound of jazz on the Scandinavian scene over the past decade or two – given that its members have been involved in such important projects as Five Corners Quintet, Tuomo, Oddarang, and the Timo Lassy combo! Yet at the core, these four musicians are all very individual, and very different than some of that work – much more jazz-based, with a creative interplay between rhythm, tone, and texture – the last of which comes through especially strong in the trumpet work of Verneri Pohjola, which is completely sublime – almost with the power of a tenorist in some ways, but very tied to the structure of his instrument. Tuomo Prattala provides some really amazing textures on piano, alongside the bass of Antti Lotjonen and drums of Olavi Louhivuori – in modes that really keep things interesting throughout. The group begins with a great instrumental reading of Laurie Anderson's classic "O Superman", and other tracks include "Ravelogue", "Land Of Real Men", "Twisted Thistle", "Afterimage", and "Lonely Lonely". Damn incredible work from Irreversible Entanglements – a Philly group, but one who definitely belong in the special, small universe of the International Anthem label from Chicago! This set is even more fierce, more focused than their great debut – burning with righteous energy from a great small combo who play with fire and spirit throughout – and topped with knowledge and wisdom from Camae Ayewa, whose spoken words really hold the whole thing together! The record echoes spoken word/jazz experiments from the most righteous corners of the 70s spiritual avant underground – but has a very different energy that not only belies the younger status of the group, but also the importance of their very contemporary message. Other members include Keir Nueringer on tenor, Aquiles Navarro on trumpet, Luke Stewart on bass, and Tcheser Holmes on drums – and all members also play percussion – on titles that include "Bread Out Of Stone", "The Code Noir/Amina", "Who Sent You – Ritual", "No Mas", and "Blues Ideology". ✨✧ Bert JanschBirthday Blues ... LP
Reprise/Superior Viaduct, 1969. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of the greatest albums ever from UK genius Bert Jansch – cut as a solo set at a time when his fame was rising with the group Pentangle, and somewhat overlooked at the time! Yet all these many years later, we'd rank this one right up alongside important records of the period by Nick Drake – even though Jansch has a style that's completely his own – a bit ancient at times, somewhat bluesy on his guitar inflections, and set to this amazing voice that makes even the simplest lyric come across with a spooky sort of edge. Instrumentation is relatively spare – mostly Bert on guitar, joined by occasional players who include jazzman Ray Warleigh on alto and flute, and Duffy Power on harmonica – shaded in by producer Shel Talmy in ways that remind us of the lighter folksy numbers on the Donovan productions by Mickie Most. Titles include "The Bright New Year", "Tree Song", "Poison", "Wishing Well", "Blues", "I Am Lonely", and "Come Sing Me A Happy Song To Prove We Can All Get Along The Lumpy Bumpy Long & Dusty Road". Tremendous work from Bert Jansch – an album that shows how much he'd evolved in just a few short years – both as a singer and as a musician, and as a completely unique talent on his own! The record has an instantly timeless feel – that mix of ancient inspiration and new freedoms unlocked by the small group of important UK folk musicians of which Jansch was a part – and the format has Bert really going back to the basics of his debut, with just vocals and guitar – but delivered with this incredible new presence that's very different than his work of the mid 60s! There's so many dark, subtle elements going on here – both in the guitar lines and the singing – it might be possible to initially overlook the genius of the record, which keeps on giving and giving for years, over many repeated listenings. It's been quite some time since we last heard from Deborah Jordan – and the singer has come a long way since her days in Silhouette Brown – really maturing a lot as a songwriter, and finding this way to really move forward in her music, while still hanging onto some of the future soul modes that made her such an important force on the London scene many years back! The album's a rock-solid album of cosmic soul – not just in Deborah's spacey presentation of her own lyrics, but also in the excellent keyboard work –e specially the Fender Rhodes that seems to grace most of the album – warming things up between the vocals and the crispy crackling rhythms – which themselves are mostly in a more mellow and midtempo mode. A modern classic hip hop soundtrack to Black Panther that should make T'Challa proud! It was pretty clear early on that Black Panther might be one of the greatest modern super hero movies – and an important one for the political and cultural climate of the late teens – so the pressure was on to deliver a relevant soundtrack. King PleasureSource (Original Moody's Mood/Golden Days) ... LP
Prestige, Early 50s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $7.99
An important set that documents a nice patch of King's early vocalese jazz sides – pivotal vocal jazz recordings that were not only enormously popular with listeners around the country, but which also did a heck of a lot in the way of advancing the way that male singers handled lead vocals on jazz-based tunes! The first album's pulled from his Original Moody's Mood For Love set for Prestige, which was itself a compilation and features "I'm In The Mood For Love", "Red Top", "Jumpin With Symphony Sid", "I'm Gone", "Funk Junction", "You're Crying", "Don't Get Scared", "This Is Always', and "Exclamation Blues". The second LP's the hard to find Goldne Days set, a beautiful record, and still one of the greatest jazz vocal albums ever made. The great King Pleasure sings in a raspy vocalese style similar to Jon Hendricks or Eddie Jefferson, but with a sense of warmth and delivery that the two of them never seem to reach. The set list here features a stellar batch of tracks with lyrics by Pleasure, including "The New Symphony Sid", "No, Not Much", "Parker's Mood", and "Golden Days". There's some great accompaniment by LA hard bop players like Teddy Edwards, Gerald Wiggins, and Harold Land, and the whole set sparkles with imagination and warmth. 21 tracks in all. Blue Note, 1997. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A brilliant later set from Lee Konitz – recorded for Blue Note, after many years of Lee's mighty talents being ignored by US labels! Konitz first rose up as a modernist in the postwar years, recorded important records for Atlantic, Verve, Prestige, and other labels – then mostly gave his gifts to the overseas market during the 70s, and especially the 80s. Yet during that time, he grew tremendously as a player – something that's almost hard to imagine given the genius of his youth – and received this excellent showcase courtesy of bassist Charlie Haden, who co-produced with Lee, and plays in the trio alongside pianist Brad Mehldau. The format is open and fluid – never too free, but with that exploratory vibe that Konitz and the rest of the Tristano school opened up in the 50s. The lineup here features the cream of the crop of the European avant scene of the late 70s – all brought together with that special care that always makes Horo Records albums so wonderful! A great document of the crossover between the New York Latin scene and the Catskills – the upstate resort community that was as important to the Latin groups as the uptown clubs! Like many groups of the period, Machito's found a heck of a lot of work in the Catskills during the 50s – most notably at the Concord Resort, paid tribute to by this set – which includes photos of famous Concord staffers that include swimming instructor Buster Crabbe and golf pro Jimmy Demarest! But apart from that gimmicky approach, the album's actually a strong one for Machito – showing the kind of grooves that helped his 50s group cross over big – a mix of mambo and early cha cha tracks that include "Patricia", "Guaglione", "Torero", "Cha Cha Cha Loco", "Cotillon Mambo", and "Mambo La Concord". Island, 1968. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A record that's hard to do justice in words – as it's so unusual, so individual, it still stands as one of the best moments of John Martyn's career! Sure, the guy came from folk music, and works here on acoustic guitar alongside his vocals – and sure, he was part of a groundbreaking, free-thinking generation of post-folkies that also included Nick Drake and Donovan – but like those two important contemporaries, there's a sound here that goes beyond easy style or summation – a fantastically fresh approach that's still maybe the best place to open people's eyes to Martyn's genius, even after all these years. The songs are relatively spare – which is great, because the wonderful Harold McNair provides plenty of flute lines throughout – with just a bit of accompaniment from Paul Wheeler on second guitar and Dave Moses on bass – all produced very thoughtfully by the young Al Stewart. Most tunes are originals by Martyn – and titles include "The Gardeners", "A Day At The Sea", "Dusty", "Winding Boy"," Hello Train", "Fly On Home", and "The River". LP, Vinyl record album

Candid/Pure Pleasure (UK), 1961. New Copy ... $34.99 44.99
The only session as a leader from trumpeter Cal Massey – a big influence on soulful modernism in the 60s, but an artist who showed up more in the liner notes for records than he did in the studio! The record's a really unique one – and a set that crackles with the best sort of intensity of the Candid jazz label at the time. Massey's vision here is one that's extremely progressive – open in a hardbop sort of way, but often touched with more of the modernism that was showing up in the darker corners of the Blue Note scene. His trumpet work here has a mix of sweetness and sharp edges that reminds us a lot of Johnny Coles at his best – but almost even more important is his writing and overall conception – as the tunes here are a fantastic mix of high concept ideals that never fail to groove – of a sort that would show up later in the 60s on records by Hank Mobley, Lee Morgan, and others. The group here is a sextet – with Massey on trumpet, Julius Watkins on French Horn, Hugh Brodie on tenor, Patti Brown on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and GT Hogan on drums – and titles include "These Are Soulful Days", which was recorded by Lee Morgan, and "Bakai", which was recorded by Coltrane – and the tracks "Blues To Coltrane", "What's Wrong", and "Father & Son".
