Herb Alpert & OthersWhipped Cream & Other Delights – Re-Whipped ... CD
A&M/Shout Factory, 1960s/2006. Used ... $9.99
A surprisingly great take on the Tijuana Brass sound of the 60s – one that offers up new remixes of classics, but which is nicely respectful of the original Herb Albert groove! Unlike other remix projects of this type, which sometimes clutter up the tracks with too many extra bits – or abstract the originals past the point of recognition – this one maintains the sense of space, time, and rhythm that Herb first brought to his work in the 60s, while also updating the tunes with a 21st Century aesthetic. Remixers include Medeski Martin & Wood, Mocean Worker, Thievery Corporation, John King (Dust Brothers), and Anthony Marinelli – and titles include "Whipped Cream", "Taste Of Honey", "Green Peppers", "Bittersweet Samba", "Peanuts", "Love Potion #9", and "Butterball". Herb Alpert & The Tijuana BrassHerb Alpert's Ninth ... LP
A&M, 1967. Near Mint- ... $7.99
Wonderfully jaunty and jagged work from trumpeter Herb Alpert – and a session that has him opening up the Tijuana Brass groove a bit more than usual! There's clearly an influence here of the Brazilian sound that was showing up strongly at A&M Records at the time – heard to greatest effect on the album's version of Chico Buarque's "A Banda", but also in gentler, more subtle ways that seem to emerge in other tunes that trade the group's older sound for one that has more of a bossa sense of subtlety. Also, there's some great A&M pop that's beginning to emerge here too – as in the album's great takes on "The Happening" and "Love So Fine" – both of which really sound beautiful here! Other tracks include "Cowboys & Indians", "Flea Bag", "Love Nest", and "Bud". LP, Vinyl record album

Herb Alpert & The Tijuana BrassLost Treasures – Rare & Unreleased ... CD
A&M/Herb Alpert Presents, 1960s. New Copy ... $12.99 13.98
Genius, pure genius – a wonderful collection of 22 rare numbers by Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass – all recorded during the group's years at A&M Records, and including a number of previously unreleased tunes! The sound here is completely sublime – way more than just the simple themes that you might expect from the TJB at the time, especially since there's a fair bit of numbers from Herb's late 60s years, when he was really opening into a wider range of modes explored by A&M Records on their Bacharach, Brazilian, soundtrack, and singer-songwriter releases. The whole thing's a key treasure in our 60s collection of instrumental pop – one that fills in a space we didn't even know we had! Titles include "Alone Again (Naturally)", "Julius & Me", "Happy Hour", "Promises Promises", "Whistlestar", "Killing Me Softy", "Chris", "Popcorn", "Flowers On The Wall", and "Up Cherry Street". CD

✨✧ Herb Alpert & The Tijuana BrassSounds Like Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass ... LP
A&M, 1967. Near Mint- ... $9.99
Sounds like Herb Alpert, but it grooves in ways that we hardly expected – playful, creative, and filled with so many more rhythms than just the Tijuana groove we might have thought! There's a real deepening sense of instrumental pop going on here – as Herb explores some of the darker strains brought into the market by younger groups and artists on the scene, and through some of the cross-cultural recordings that were opening up as the global music market expanded in the mid 60s. The Brass still get in plenty of their jaunty licks in the set, but there's also more of a sense of Herb as a standout man of his own – a mature, all-adult sound that's got some great brooding emotion from time to time. Titles include the great sample cut "Treasure Of San Miguel", "Casino Royale", "Wade In The Water", "Shades Of Blue", "Bo Bo", "Lady Godiva", "Town Without Pity", "Gotta Lot Of Livin To Do", and "The Charmer". LP, Vinyl record album
(Tan label stereo pressing. Includes the Herb Alpert inner sleeve. Cover has clear tape inside the opening, in fantastic shape otherwise.)

Herb Alpert & The Tijuana BrassWarm ... LP
A&M, Late 60s. Near Mint- ... $7.99
A fantastic record from the late 60s years of Herb Alpert – a time when the trumpeter was really opening up his sound, and starting to hit some of the same cool styles of his other great acts on the A&M label! Gone are the trademark Cali-Mex arrangements of the early Tijuana Brass records – and in their place are these soaring, soulful styles that draw heavily from the late 60s changes in Brazilian music, American soundtracks, and jazz! Shorty Rogers helped a bit with the charts, and you can definitely hear his cool touches in the mix – and the trumpet solos are nicely changed up from previous records too. Herb does a great job with Nilsson's excellent cut "Without Her", and the band grooves nicely on Brazil cuts "The Sea Is My Soil" and "Zazueira", plus "Pretty World", "To Wait For Love", "Sandbox", "Marjorine", and "The Continental". ✨✧ Herb AlpertRise ... LP
A&M, 1979. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A whole new level of genius for Herb Alpert – a record that's light years away from his earlier work with the Tijuana Brass, and which has the trumpeter stepping strongly into the world of smooth jazzy fusion! The title track here went platinum the minute it was released – and became an end-of-the 70s instrumental anthem that seemed to drift out of speakers around the country. The rest of the album's pretty great too – built on the modes explored by Donald Byrd, Freddie Hubbard, and other soulful fusion players of the 70s – but cast out with a bit more drama overall. Titles include the seminal jazz dance classic "Rotation" – plus "Rise", "Street Life", "Aranjuez (Mon Amour)", "1980", "Angelina", and "Love Is". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Herb Alpert & The Tijuana BrassBeat Of The Brass ... LP
A&M, 1968. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Beautifully compressed pop from Herb Alpert – a session that's still got the traditional Tijuana Brass style, but which also displays a more restrained, more adult approach to instrumental pop! The rhythms are nicely changed out more than before here – stretching out with interwoven exotic touches and sweeter A&M pop – all coming together at a level that's far more sophisticated than you might guess if you've only got a version of Herb that's reduced to simple cliche! Herb also makes a key vocal appearance on the song "This Guy's In Love With You" – the group's first #1 single, and the beginning of a great run of Alpert vocalizations. Other tracks include "The Robin", "Slick", "Panama", "A Beautiful Friend", "She Touched Me", and "Thanks For The Memory". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has a thin strip of clear tape on the seams.)

✨✧ Herb Alpert & The Tijuana BrassWhat Now My Love ... LP
A&M, 1966. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The genius of this set is summed up in the tune "Magic Trumpet" – perhaps one of the best estimations of Herb's talents we could think of! The tune, like the entire album, is a fluid bit of magic that takes an older brass-driven mode into the far groovier styles of the 60s – an approach that fuses all the horns around Herb's boldly stated lead, and slides them all around in jaunty rhythms that are a perfect blend of the A&M groove and an imagined Latin past! Titles include "Freckles", "Magic Trumpet", "Five Minutes More", "Shadow Of Your Smile", "Plucky", "So What's New", and "It Was A Very Good Year". LP, Vinyl record album
(Tan label stereo pressing. Cover has clear tape inside the opening, in fantastic shape otherwise.)

✨✧ Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66Herb Alpert Presents Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66 ... LP
A&M, 1966. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The start of a legend – and the very first album by Sergio Mendes' Brasil 66 group, proudly brought to the world through the godlike talents of a young Herb Alpert! Sergio was no stranger to the recording studio by the time of this set, but the record marked a real shift in his music – a change from the mostly-instrumental bossa modes he first forged back in Brazil, and a shift to warmer, sweeter pop with a nice sunny California finish – done through unique production techniques and the group's trademark two-lady lead vocals! The sound is tremendous, and is possibly heard in its purest form here – simple, focused, and given that near-perfect A&M sound through Herb's production skills. Titles include the classics "Daytripper", "Aqua De Beber", "O Pato", "Berimbau", "Mas Que Nada", and "The Joker". LP, Vinyl record album
(Stereo tan label pressing.)

Merry ClaytonBeautiful Scars ... LP
Motown/Ode, 2021. New Copy ... $16.99 19.99
A really strong return to form for the legendary Merry Clayton – an album recorded in the wake of an accident that nearly took her life, and seemed to unlock a whole new level of spirituality in her music – presented here on an album that's the first we've seen in Motown's gospel series in quite a long time! That placement is fitting, though, as the presentation here is very classic – maybe not 70s styled, but more in the 90s blend of gospel and soul used by a few key artists who had huge crossover success – spearheaded here by Lou Adler and Terry Young in the studio, the latter of whom plays organ on the record – amidst other instrumental work that includes a trumpet solo from Herb Alpert, two tenor solos from Gerald Albright, and an unusual posthumous solo from 1971 from Curtis Amy. Merry's clearly the star of the show, though – soaring out with her legendary vocal charms – on titles that include "Room At The Altar", "He Made A Way", "A Song For You", "Beautiful Scars", "Love Is A Mighty River", and the "Ooh Child Medley". Letta MbuluThere's Music In The Air ... LP
A&M, Early 70s. Very Good ... $5.99
A surprisingly nice album for A&M, and one in which Letta's funky African soul style gets a bit more of an LA studio sound. The record features backing by a lot of well-known funky studio players, and Herb Alpert produced the record with a nice sound that still keeps Letta's rich voice in front. Titles include "Tristeza", "Sacred Drum", "Maru A Pula", "Feelings", and "Rainy Day Music". LP, Vinyl record album

Chris MontezMore I See You – Call Me ... LP
A&M, 1966. Very Good+ ... $9.99
Fantastically sweet pop from Chris Montez! Chris had a light little voice that was perfect for the A&M Records approach of the 60s – a style that has him singing gently over arrangements that glide and bounce around with ease, sometimes handled by Herb Alpert, in a breezy sunny LA mode that makes us want to be driving down Highway 101 with the top down, AM radio blasting out all of Chris' early singles at once! Chris' real genius here is the way that he takes standards and pop tunes – and, working with Herb, crafts them into a whole new sound – stripped down, streamlined, and perfect for the 60s! Titles include "One Note Samba", "The More I See You", "Fly Me To The Moon", "The Shadow Of Your Smile", "Call Me", "Hey Baby", and "Little White Lies". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousStay Awake – Various Interpretations Of Music From Vintage Disney Films ... CD
A&M, 1988. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the most novel, and dare we say coolest alternative soundtrack compilations of the late 80s! Stay Awake features a wildly diverse roster of artists covering, reinterpreting and paying tribute to songs from older Disney films – including Tom Waits, Sun Ra & His Arkestra, Natalie Merchant & Michael Stipe, Aaron Neville, Bill Frisell, NRBQ, Betty Carter, Garth Hudson of The Band, The Replacements & many more – and goes a lot farther than just inviting disparate musical figures to do versions of classic songs. The material is arranged into suites and medleys that have a strangely effective flow regardless of how jaw-droppingly diverse the voices and players might be from one movement to the next. This one should be considered a late feather in the cap for creativity at A&M Records! Includes "Pink Elephants On Parade" by Sun Ra, When You Wish Upon A Star" by Ringo Starr & Herb Alpert (co-produced by Van Dyke Parks), "Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah" by Harry Nilsson, "Hey Ho (The Dwarfs Marching Song)" by Tom Waits, "I Wan'Na Be Like You (The Monkey Song)" by Los Lobos, "Stay Awake" by Suzanne Vega, "Cruella De Ville" by The Replacements and lots more.
