New Directions ... CD Blue Note, 2000. Used ...
Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great recent album on Blue Note, and one that's an incredibly loving hommage to the label's great history. The group features GregOsby on alto, Mark Shim on tenor, Stefon Harris on vibes, and Jason Moran on piano – and the four of them play together in a tight, soulful style that brings back memories of some of Blue Note's best mid 60s recordings. It's no surprise that the group runs through some of the better known cuts from the label's earlier years – like "Theme From Blow Up", "No Room For Squares", "Tom Thumb", "Ping Pong", and "Song For My Father" – but the mix of vibes and horns also transforms the sound into something new and fresh, and keeps the album from being just a rehash of old stuff. Quite nice, and nice and long! CD
(Out of print, promotional stamp on CD & mark through barcode.)
An expansive exploration into the future of funky jazz – put together by DJ Smash, and even better than the first volume in the series! The set brings together recent tracks from a variety of Blue Note releases from around the globe – including a few from the ultra-tasty Blue Note France line – and it also includes a few remixes of straight jazz tracks as well. Titles include "Mesquelero" by Goran Kajfes, "Planet Rock" by Jason Moran, "Street Sounds" by Charlie Hunter with Mos Def, "Poetry In Motion" by GregOsby, "Bridge To Bama (Hi Tek rmx dub)" by Soulive with Talib Kweli, "Kiss (DJ Smash rmx)" by Bob Belden Project with Jimi Tunnell, "Magrouni (Imhotep rmx)" by Erik Truffaz, "Jazz Mediterranee (Koop rmx)" by Henri Salvador, "Battlefield (Joe Claussell rmx)" by Wild Magnolias, "Into the Dark" by Marc Moulin, "Belmondo's Lip (DJ Spooky rmx)" by Don Byron, "Pat & Joe (DJ Smash rmx)" by Bobby Mc Ferrin, "Come Together (DJ Kingsize rmx)" by Bob Beldon Project with Cassandra Wilson & Dianne Reeves, and "Uninvisible (DJ Smash rmx)" by Medeski Martin & Wood. Transmigration ... CD DIW, 1991. Used ...
Temporarily Out Of Stock
Easily one of the best M-Base related sessions for DIW from the early 90s – and certainly one that's the most free from the dated touches of the others! The real strength here is the strong saxophone work – done by Von Freeman on tenor, and both Steve Coleman and GregOsby on alto – coming together with the guitar of David Gilmore, bass of Kenny Davis, and drums of Marvin Smitty Smith – all in a setting that offers plenty of bite on the reeds! The presence of Freeman is quite unusual for a date like this, and he really deepens the sound by sometimes holding back from the too-angular rhythms of the rest of the group – almost (if we dare) a sense of Chicago soul to cut through the too-arty New York inclinations of the rest of the group! Titles include "Khan", "Mr Lucky", "3 Against 2", "It's You", and "Thebes". CD
The title's a stupid one, but Stefon Harris is one of the boldest voices on vibes in the past 20 years – a great player with a sound that resonates strongly with older work by Bobby Hutcherson and Walt Dickerson! Like both of those players, Harris has a way of approaching the vibes that is freshly modern, yet also strongly rhythmic and swinging – a groove that comes out even on the more experimental numbers in the set, and which makes the album resonate with colors and tones that few others on the instrument can match. The overall sound here is marked by GregOsby's presence in the group and his production – but thankfully, those elements are a bit underplayed – and other players on the record include Steve Turre on trombone and Jason Moran on piano. Titles include "Feline Blues", "There Is No Greater Love", "Of Things To Come", "Bass Vibes", "Collage", "The Alchemist", "Chorale", "Faded Beauty", and "After The Day Is Done". CD

A key moment as a leader from pianist Jason Moran – wonderfully fresh original material, played with a tight group of some of his best contemporaries! The album's one of the best in the new direction Blue Note was trying to take in the late 90s – as it's got a new musical vision, yet still hangs onto the soulful currents that always make the label so great – a quality that comes both from Moran's playing and writing, and from the vibes of Stefon Harris and reeds of GregOsby. There's none of the too-arch elements that would hurt other Blue Note efforts of the time – and titles include "Still Moving", "Jamo Meets Samo", "Gangsterism On Canvas", "Snake Stance", "Le Tombeau De Couperin/States Of Art", "Retrograde", and "Aquanaut".
