Greg FoatMage ... LP
Athens Of The North (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $22.99 28.99
Maybe the most amazing work we've heard so far from Greg Foat – and that's really saying a lot, as the British keyboardist has given us some really incredible records over the years! The work's got a more ambitious vibe than some of Greg's straighter jazz sets – with large arrangements that also bring in voices at times – used in a really haunting way that's part late 60s Chess/Cadet Records, part acid folk – even though the instrumentation is mostly jazz overall! The core group also features this great mix of older British jazz giants and contemporary musicians – the legendary Ray Russell on guitar, with Duncan Lamont on tenor, Art Themen on soprano and tenor, Nat Steele on vibes, Warren Hampshire (of Hampshire & Foat) on guitar and percussion, and Moses Boyd, Clark Tracey, and Malcolm Catto on drums! Lamont is especially great – with these old school tenor solos that bring a strong current of soul to the more complex arrangements – and Foat himself plays piano, keyboards, and harmonium. Titles include versions of Tim Buckley's "Driftin" and Piero Piccioni's "Endless Love" – plus originals "The Mage", "The High Priestess", "Incantation", and "The Magic Radish". Greg FoatSymphonie Pacifique ... LP
Strut (UK), 2020. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $27.99 29.99
One of the most ambitious albums to date from the mighty Greg Foat – a set that's different than some of his more intimate affairs, in that it features key contributions from British jazz giants both young and old – all working with Greg's piano, Fender Rhodes, and vibes in a style that's deeply spiritual, and filled with power! The album's hardly the pacific affair you might guess from the title – nothing too placid, as the energy really builds between members of a lineup that includes Moses Boyd and Clark Tracey on drums, Heather Wrighton on harp, Art Themen on tenor and soprano, Eric Young on percussion, and Warren Hampshire on guitars – all at a level that makes the record the deepest jazz album that Foat has ever given us! Titles include "Pointe Venus", "Mother's Love", "After The Storm", "Island Life", "Man Vs Machine", "Nikinakinu", "Anticipation", and "Symphonie Pacifique". LP, Vinyl record album

Greg Foat & James ThorpePhotosynthesis ... CD
Athens Of The North (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $6.99 18.99
A very cool collaboration between Greg Foat and James Thorpe – a set that's billed more as a sound library session than some of Foat's other jazz projects – even though the sound is equally appealing if you love those records too! The set is self-described as "futuristic analogue cosmic synth library cues for TV, film, and radio" – but it's also got a much warmer sound than you might expect, very much in keeping with the natural image on the cover – as Foat and Thorpe eschew some of the colder keyboard styles of other library records, and instead really let things glow with that organic vibe that usually informs Greg's music, as gentle rhythms set the pace for Fender Rhodes, Hohner pianet, and a host of Korg and Roland keys. There's also a touch of vibes, some field recordings, and other cool touches – on tracks that include "Balloon Ride", "Circadian Rhythms", "Grockle Box", "Living The Dream", "Platform Game", "Stacey's Theme", and "Elementary Physiology (parts 1 & 2)". ✨✧ Greg Foat GroupGreg Foat Group – Live At The Playboy Club, London (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Jazzman (UK), 2014. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The coolest record so far from this totally great combo – a live recording done on the home turf of the Greg Foat Group – the Playboy Club in London! The retro venue really fits the slinky, sexy vibe of the group's music – and although we already loved these guys before, this album has a really special sort of feel – with loads of wonderful keyboard lines from Greg on Hohner Electra piano, Elka Rhapsody, Hammond L 100, and Mutron Phaser – almost always distorted with a nice degree of fuzz, but still a straight ahead approach, and some great undercurrents of fuzz too! The group also features tenor and trumpet – which sometimes sound distorted, ala Varitone modes – and the overall sound feels like some lost jazzy club combo from the late 60s, really tripping out in a very comfortable space. We'd easily stack this one next to our favorite funky Fender Rhodes records from back in the day – and titles include "By The Grace Of God I Am", "Ingen Reklam", "Funky Fanfare", "Madrid", and "Mr Minor". CD features two bonus tracks – "Finky Minky" and "Papa's Got A Brand New Pigbag". CD

✨✧ Greg FoatBlue Lotus ... LP
Blue Crystal (UK), 2022. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Keyboardist Greg Foat returns to the territory that first made us take notice of his skills many years back – more jazz-based music that's heavy on his own work on Fender Rhodes, Moog, and a variety of other keyboards – but which also features strong contributions from the other members of the group! This time around, that group features the legendary Art Themen on soprano sax – a legendary British player who's made some great records over the years – working with a younger group that also features superb tenor from Rob Mach, and flugelhorn from Trevor Walker – a player whose deep tones and wide sound are a perfect fit for the keyboards. There's plenty of drums and percussion in the mix, keeping things live and spontaneous – on titles that include "Sinister Undertones", "Blue Step", "Electric Dreams", "Lullaby For Leo", "Unconditional Love", and "The Bull Leap". ✨✧ Greg Foat GroupDark Is The Sun (10th anniversary pressing – with bonus download) ... LP
Jazzman (UK), 2011. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The debut album from Greg Foat – the first of many great records the keyboardist would soon give us, and a set that came as quite a surprise on the mostly-reissue Jazzman label! Yet the set also makes a lot of sense – as Foat is clearly inspired by some of the British greats of the past, both from the world of jazz and soundtrack scenes – and he works here in a style that mixes his own great keyboards with some fuller arrangements, nice percussion, and even some very cool wordless female vocals! Foat himself plays Hammond, keyboards, piano, and harpsichord – and titles include "Time Piece 1", "Dark Is The Sun", "Hello Old Friend", "Yeah You Are", "Uncle Bessie", "Bright Is The Sun", and "Time Piece 2". ✨✧ Greg Foat GroupGirl & Robot With Flowers ... LP
Jazzman (UK), 2012. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Amazing sounds from this very hip group – a contemporary combo, but one who play with a depth of sound to warrant their inclusion on the Jazzman label! The style is almost spiritual jazz, but a bit more laidback too – sounds that are cosmic, yet never soaring to the skies – and almost more content to contemplate their own existence in these cool little rhythmic progressions – a very hip approach that draws a lot of power from its minimalism! Instrumentation is a bit trippy at points – but mostly in the way the players fold things together – so that tinkling piano tipples over brooding basslines, or organ lines hum softly to encourage string sounds to start too – a beautifully poetic style that only gets better as the album moves along! Titles include "Cast Adrift", "For A Breath I Tarry", "Have Spacesuit Will Travel (part 2)", "Clear Skies Select Stick", "Girl & Robot With Flowers (part 6)", and "Girl & Robot With Flowers (part 4)". Blue Crystal (UK), 2022. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
One of the many things we love about keyboardist Greg Foat is that he's never willing to sit still – that he's always on the move into some new dimension of his music – so much so that it's very difficult to ever compare one of his records with another! This set's got a very keyboard-heavy approach – recorded with just drums from Morgan Simpson of Black Midi – and a style that's like some of the best tracks from that moment when the sound library scene went more electric at the end of the 70s – although in a way that still stretches out with the enigmatic depths of some of Foat's more ambitious projects! The album's full of wonderfully spacey lines and laidback grooves – on titles that include "Underwater Fantasy", "Tropical Love", "Arctic Cavern", "The Investigation", "Green Odyssey", "Riding Into Battel", "Subterranean Lake", and "World Of Tiers". ✨✧ Hampshire & FoatGalaxies Like Grains Of Sand ... LP
Athens Of The North (UK), 2017. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Spacey sounds from the dream team of Warren Hampshire and Greg Foat – a set that feels a bit like music that Foat previously recorded under his own name, but which also has a more spiritual sound overall! Hampshire plays guitar and auto harp, and Foat plays Fender Rhodes, vibes, and other keyboards – but those instruments are just part of the sound here – as there's also some added strings, tenor, and other elements from time to time – inflecting the music with a visionary quality that reminds us of some of the more freethinking records coming out in the early 70s – especially the kind of small label sets that were years ahead of their time, and only finally getting their due all these many years later. The presentation of the package echoes the style of older Michael Garrick material on the UK Argo Records – and there's definitely a depth here to live up to that spirit, but also a warmer vibe overall. Titles include "How The Nights Can Fly", "Lullaby", "The Solar Winds", "A Long Way Home", and "All Washed Up". LP, Vinyl record album
