✨✧ VariousMocambo Funk 45s – A Selection Of Today's Rarest Vinyl Singles ... CD
Mocambo (Germany), 2007. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Contemporary funk, but with a groove deep enough to warrant the "rare" promised in the title – as most of these numbers would stand strongly next to the best funky 45s from the late 60s and early 70s! The production is great throughout – very hard-edged, and with a back-to-basics feel that really focuses on the best elements of the tunes – the snapping drums, funky basslines, blasting horn parts, and other great instrumental bits that make these tracks great. And while we'd always paid attention to the Mocambo label, this set clearly shows that they've got a lot more to offer than we'd ever realized – a completely solid body of work that's presented wonderfully in this super-tight CD! 18 tracks in all – including "Listen Up" by Glover Crockett & Glover, "Free Vibes (parts 1 & 2)" by Gizelle Smith & The Mocambo Allstars, "The Getaway" by Delta Rhythm Section, "Hustle The Mustle" by Speedometer, "Chicano Chaser" by Ian Langley, "Highway Patrol" by James Taylor Quartet, "Look Ka Py Py" by The Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band, "The Prophet" by Glover Crockett & Glover, and "Funkin Fever" by Delta Rhythm Section. ✨✧ Robert GlasperF**k Yo Feelings ... CD
Loma Vista, 2020. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Easily the most powerful album cover and title to date from the mighty Robert Glasper – an artist who's evolved so much in recent years, he's shifted from the world of conventional jazz to the role of an elder statesman in funk, soul, and hip hop as well! This album's got all of those sides of Glasper firmly in place, thanks to a wide array of guests – but there's also that warm, core groove that we've always loved from Robert's keyboard work – that magical flow that set him apart from the pack, and which continues to shape the sound of a generation. With the guest singers and artists, the record rivals the vibe of Glasper's Black Radio projects – and is even billed as a Black Radio Production on the front – with a lineup that includes Yasiin Bey, Herbie Hancock, Bilal, Denzel Curry, Andra Day, Song Bird, Queen Sheba, Affion Crockett, Buddy, Mick Jenkins, James Poyser, Bridget Kelly, and others – on titles that include "I Want You", "Aah Whot", "All I Do", "Liquid Swords", "In Case You Forgot", "F*ck Yo Feelings", "Let Me In", "Gone", "This Changes Everything", and "Endangered Black Woman". VariousDJ Spinna Presents The Sound Beyond Stars – Essential Remixes ... CD
BBE (UK), 2000s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $8.99 22.99
The mighty DJ Spinna has a way of making already-great music sound even greater – by using just the right sort of soulful touch to augment subtle elements in the original tunes that might have otherwise gone overlooked – to unlock a richer, more righteous energy that really serves the tunes well! And while we've loved Spinna's remix work on countless singles over the years, we're even happier to hear it all in one place like this – in a nicely overstuffed collection that has so many great Spinna touches, it could well be a Spinna album on its own – especially since the DJ always has such a warmly collaborative relationship with so many different artists. Tracks include "Days Like This (Spinna & Ticklah club)" by Shaun Escoffery, "Live In The Light (DJ Spinna rmx)" by Fertile Ground, "Moonlight (DJ Spinna Galacti Soul voc)" by Bah Samba, "Dirty Mind (DJ Spinna rmx)" by Animal House, "Dear Friend (DJ Spinna rmx)" by Loftsoul with Lisa Millet, "Crossroads (DJ Spinna rmx)" by Alison Crockett, "Closer (DJ Spinna rmx)" by Goapele, "A Better Day (DJ Spinna rmx)" by Louie Vega with Raul Midon, "Why (DJ Spinna rmx)" by Tortured Soul, "I Remember Love (DJ Spinna rmx)" by Yvett Rovira, and "Rideaway Getaway (DJ Spinna rmx)" by Agent K with Carleen Anderson. VariousYam Who Revue ... CD
Little League (UK), 2006. Used ... $0.99
A host of remixes and reworked versions by Yam Who – many of which feature key musical elements added into the tunes! As with many of the singles bearing the Yam Who imprint, the sound here is often quite crispy and cosmic – but also more directly funky than most work from the London scene, with a sense of focus that we really love! And although the tracks here are pulled from singles of the past few years, we'll have to admit that we missed most of them the first time around – so the CD's almost a brand new discovery for our ears, and a real bargain at this price. Titles include Yam Who versions of "Heavenly" by Ski Oakenfull, "Show Me Love" by Incognito, "Striptease" by Jeymes Samuel, "The Nice Up" by Rodney P, "Over" by Megablast, "And I" by Break Reform, "Cry Love" by Colonel Red, "Your Eyes" by Elmore Judd, "Damelo" by Emmanuel, "Do 4 U" by Heavy, and "Like Rain" by Alison Crockett.
