Obe, 2020. New Copy ... $11.99 12.98
These guys are known by some as the backing band of Anderson.Paak, but they're a hell of a group on their own – rock-solid right at the core, and able to effortlessly craft a sweet blend of funk and soul – yet also leave room for plenty of guests along the way! The musicianship here is fantastic – classic, yet very much their own – echoing the perfection of 70s studio work, but with a very contemporary vibe and a nicely up-close spirit –a sound that's perfect all the way through, and which makes a great accompaniment to guest work from TI, Shafiq Husayn, Daniel Caesar, Syd, Benny Sings, T Nava, Callum Connor, Conway, Westside Gunn, and even Anderson.Paak. The kind of record that's perfect for bumpin all summer long – with titles that include "Gidget", "Rene", "Shibuya", "Eternal Light", "The Rivington", "Beauty & Essex", and "On Sight". CD

✨✧ Buddy MilesExpressway To Your Skull ... LP
Mercury, 1968. Very Good Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A super tripped-out blend of rock, funk, and soul – easily one of Buddy Miles' most mindblowing albums – and a classic that never lets up at all! Buddy's leading the whole group on drums – really kicking things large from behind the kit – while the rest of the group jams in a heavy style that's got plenty of fuzzed-out guitar and jazzy horn riffs – virtually a blueprint for countless other rock funk groups that copped Buddy's style in years to come. The drums alone are worth the price of admission – but the whole album's so right, tight, and outta sight that it's been a favorite in our crates for years! Titles include "Train", "Let Your Lovelight Shine", "Don't Mess With Cupid", "Funky Mule", and "Wrap It Up". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Jeffery Scott GreerSchematics For A Blank Stare Vol 1 ... LP
Funk Night, 2021. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Jeffery Scott Greer has given us some great funk singles in recent years – those expensive funky 45s that can sometimes cost more than a full length album – which is why we're so happy to have this record on hand! Greer can be a one-man band at times, but here he works with help from some other musicians too – although mostly serves things up with his own instrumentation on funky drums, Fender Rhodes, organ, moog, congas, and even flute – the last of which Greer plays with a slinky, soulful quality that's really outta sight! Titles include "Bumpy Rhodes", "Hollow Water", "Gorilla Funk Two", "Hazy Lazy", "Druid Soul", "Night Of The Fox", "Hell's Pilgrims", and "Space Debris". LP, Vinyl record album

James BrownLive At The Apollo Volume II ... LP
King, 1968. Good 2LP Gatefold ... $14.99
James Brown's great second album recorded live at the Apollo Theater in Harlem – a set we like even better than the first famous volume – because it's much more stretched-out, harder-hitting, and full of fire! You'd be hard pressed to find a better example of Brown's showmanship on record – as James urges the band through these triple-time takes on some of his classics, and turns in some amazing work in the process! The set includes a killer long version of "There Was A Time" – almost the blueprint of the James Brown funk sound to come – and other titles include "Bring It Up", "Let Yourself Go", and a wonderful duet version of "Think" – plus "Prisoner Of Love", "Out Of Sight", "Try Me", "It's A Man's, Man's, Man's World", "Lost Someone","Thanks", "Cold Sweat", "I Feel Alright", and "Please, Please, Please". LP, Vinyl record album

CameoCardiac Arrest/We All Know Who We Are ... CD
Chocolate City/Superbird (UK), 1975/1978. New Copy ... $12.99 16.99
Two great albums from Cameo – back to back in a single get! Cardiac Arrest is early Cameo at their best – tight, funky, and totally out of sight! The groove here is very different than their 80s work – and the group have this amazing way of focusing all their energy down on the rhythm together, and snapping things along with a really unique approach to funk – one that draws heavily from the bass, but which also isn't nearly the same sort of bass-heavy sound that so many other copycat groups would go for in later years! The album's filled with gems – and includes the classic sample cuts "Rigor Mortis" and "Post Mortem" – plus the killers "Funk Funk", "Find My Way", and "Good Times". Easily one of their best-ever records – and for good reason too! We All Know Who We Are is one of our favorite Cameo albums of all time – a record that still has the group sounding plenty funky, but also maybe hitting a more sophisticated one – one that comes through perfectly on the message-oriented title track! There's a sense of compression going on here – everything right on the money, blending together perfectly – like Earth Wind & Fire at their classic mid-70s best – a mode that makes Cameo way more than just another funk ensemble on a major label! We're always completely in love with the smooth stepping title cut – "We All Know Who We Are" – a wonderfully catchy number that's also got a really righteous message, and kind of a "Damn Right I Am Somebody" intro, with the band rapping to each other before the song starts – and other tracks include "It's Serious", "Inflation", "It's Over", "Why Have I Lost You", and "Stand Up". VariousHot Day In Harlem – The Soul Of The City 1970 to 1979 ... CD
All Platinum/Outta Sight (UK), 1970s. New Copy ... $8.99 16.99
Funk, soul, and plenty more too – a massive batch of work from the legendary All Platinum label – the pre-hip hop chapter of the Sugar Hill Records scene! The work here nicely runs the gamut – as the set features lots of the great funk you'd find on All Platinum 45s, mixed with some warmer soul tunes, and even a few ballads too! We love the label (and all it's related imprints) to death – and it's been years since anyone's brought out so many gems like this from the New Jersey powerhouse of soul. And even though the title is oddly misleading – this isn't really a Harlem collection at all – we love the results of the whole thing – a smashing array of 70s soul cuts that includes "Ton Of Dynamite" by Frankie Crocker, "Beautiful Summer Day" by Mother Freedom Band, "Stand In For Love" by Pandella Kelly, "Home" by Gloria Barnes, "3 Minutes 2 Hey Girl" by George Kerr, "Hot Day In Harlem" by Rimshots, "Chance With You" by Brother To Brother, "She Comes Up" by Storm, "Too Sweet To Be Lonely" by The Internationals, "Young Bird" by Soul Generation, and "The Prime Of Love" by BBP. VariousGodfather's R&B – James Brown's Productions 1962 to 1967 ... CD
Smash/BGP (UK), 1960s. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
A host of wonderful work produced by James Brown – most of it by a range of different singers, and one by The Godfather himself! The collection brings together some of the earliest James Brown productions – mid 60s tracks recorded for King and Smash Records, most of which aren't nearly as well known as later JB productions for the People and Polydor labels! As with that later work, all the grooves here are right in the same territory that James was hitting himself – upbeat, funky, and stone out of sight soul – all with plenty of rough edges, and backings from the same tight core of musicians that were helping out Brown on his recordings. The package is a real treasure – and is a great complement to the James Brown Singles collections from the Hip-O Select label – proof that even in these early days, James was clearly the hardest working man in show business – given all his time in the studio with other artists! 22 tracks in all – including "I Found Out" and "I'll Keep Pressing On" by Bobby Byrd, "That's When I Cry" and "If You Don't Think" by Anna King, "I Don't Care" and "Unexplainable" by Dizzy Jones, "Got No Excuse" and "If You Don't Work You Can't Eat" by James Crawford, "Do You Really Want To Rescue Me (part 1)" by Elsie Mae, "Lookie Lookie Lookie" by The Jewells, "Wide Awake In A Dream" and "Nobody Cares" by Vicki Anderson, "Devil's Den" by The Poets, "It Hurts To Be In Love" by Yvonne Fair, "That's The Spirit" by Rev Willingham, "Faith" by The Five Royales, "I Cried" by Tammy Montgomery, "Soul Food (parts 1 & 2)" by Al Brisco Clark, and "New Breed (The Boo Ga Loo) (part 1)" by James Brown. A fantastic album from Damu The Fudgemunk, and a set that kicks off a whole new series in the sound library universe too – one that has contemporary producers getting access to classic samples from the KPM Sound Library catalog, while also adding their own music to the label too! Here, Damu samples classic sound library funk by Johnny Pearson, Johnny Hawksworth, Yvan Julien, Alan Hawkshaw, and other KPM giants – sometimes serving up instrumentals, but often adding in contributions from guests who include Raw Poetic, Blu, Nitty Scott, and Insight Innovates. Given that the core sounds are right up our alley, the record sounds fantastic – and if you're worried about this not being close enough to Damu's other records, put those fears aside – as the whole thing more than lives up to that legacy too. Wilton FelderWe All Have A Star/Inherit The Wind ... CD
ABC/Robinsongs (UK), 1978/1980. New Copy ... $12.99
A pair of albums from saxophonist Wilton Felder – back to back on a single CD! We All Have A Star offers up solo sounds from Crusaders reedman Wilton Felder – a really great set that's very much in the best vibe of his larger group at the time – yet one that also offers up a stronger focus on Wilton's sublime solo work on tenor! The album's got plenty of Crusaders help on board – given that Stix Hooper and Joe Sample produced the set along with Wilton – and the vibe's a wonderful blend of electric backings, with especially great keyboard lines, and Felder's well-phrased saxophone lines over the top! A few cuts feature vocals – sung by Angela Bryant or Debbie Demoia Ross – and titles include "We All Have A Star", "I Know Who I Am", "The Cycles Of Time", "Why Believe", "Ride On", and "You & Me & Ecstasy". Inherit The Wind is one of the best Crusaders-related solo projects – a soulful bit of fusion from saxophonist Wilton Felder, co-produced with his fellow Crusaders! The album's got the best sunny finish of the group's late 70s albums – traces of Latin, funk, and soul bubbling through a warm jazzy mix – staying soulful all the way through, and coming up with a sound that's smooth, but never sleepy. The blueprint for a million other records – none of which ever sounded this good! Titles include "Insight", "LA Light", "Until The Morning Comes", "Someday We'll All Be Free", and "Inherit The Wind". Leon's CreationThis Is The Beginning ... LP
Studio 10/Acid Jazz (UK), 1970. New Copy (reissue)... $12.99 27.99
A rare album of funky soul from the Bay Area scene at the start of the 70s – and a set that's every bit as righteous as you might expect from the cover! The group's the creation of singer/keyboardist/arranger Leon Pattillo – hence the name – and you might know Leon from his later famous work in the 70s – including a stint with Santana, and loads of great work with other soul artists. But here, he's a young genius working in the freest, funkiest style of the San Francisco generation – with a vibe that's maybe a more spiritual take on territory explored by Sly & The Family Stone – with an earthier, more indie vibe overall. The group has great interplay – tight instrumentation, but never slick, and with some nice long-haired currents – and vocals are by Leon and a female singer – on titles that include "Confusion", "If I Had The Power", "Sightless", "Back Roads", "This Is The Beginning", and "Mirage". ✨✧ James BrownIt's A Mother (LP sleeve edition) ... CD
King/Culture Factory, 1969. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A definite mother from James Brown – the kind of all-funky album that few of his contemporaries could ever hope to match! If you've ever doubted the sheer raw power of James at the end of the 60s, the first few notes of this one will definitely make you a convert – and the stretched-out grooves as the album rolls on will pull you even further into the fold. Most tracks roll on with that improvised studio jamming style that James was hitting at the time – a pre-JBs mode that's not as long as later years, but which still makes you feel that there probably was plenty more recorded on the dates that didn't make it into the two-part versions of the tracks! And although James is singing on most numbers, the real focus is more on the band – hitting hard, vamping sharp, and grooving massively under shouted calls and directions from Brown. Titles include two great instrumentals – "Popcorn With a Feeling" and "Top of the Stack" – plus "Little Groove Maker Me (parts 1 & 2)", "Mother Popcorn (parts 1 & 2)", "Mashed Potato Popcorn (parts 1 & 2)", "Any Day Now", "You're Still Out Of Sight", and "I'm Shook" – as well as the great mellower number "If I Ruled The World" – redone here as an African-American anthem of pride and power! The funky Root Down EP by the Beastie Boys – riding high on a mid 90s creative peak! Root Down featuring a trio of versions of the title track and Ill Communication album standout, based on the Jimmy Smith's classic of the same name – and in hindsight, you really have to hand it to the Beasties, not only sampling and celebrating classic early 70s jazz funk, but for their earnest wish to introduce Jimmy Smith to the pop culture kids of the 90s – including a killer remix by the mighty Prince Paul. Also includes some live recordings from the time of classic Beasties tracks like"Time For Livin", "The Maestro", "Somethin's Got To Give", Time To Get Ill", thier punky "Heart Attack Man", "Sabrosa" and "Flute Loop". Blue Thumb/Verve, 1978. Used ... $12.99
Hard to miss with The Crusaders at this point – and the album's one of their stone classics from the 70s – just the kind of soulful fusion that few other groups could touch! The core trio of Joe Sample's keyboards, Wilton Felder's saxes, and Stix Hooper's drums is augmented by the guitar of Billy Rogers and bass of Robert Popwell – both players who slide in warmly to the grooves, yet still help the combo keep that lean, funky sound they first forged after dropping the first word from their Jazz Crusaders name. Things are never slick at all, and the use of vocals and larger instrumentation is yet to come – leaving the album a tight, right, outta sight groover all the way through! Titles include "Fairy Tales", "Merry Go Round", "Cosmic Reign", "Snowflake", "Covert Action", and "Bayou Bottoms". CD

VariousCan You Feel It – Modern Soul, Disco, & Boogie 1976 to 1986 ... CD
Tramp (Germany), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $14.99
The cover's a bit creepy, but the set's a great one – way more soulful than the image of a dummy might make you expect! The collection follows strongly in the same territory as the funk titles on the Tramp Records label – and like those, digs deep in the American underground to find a host of under-exposed gems from back in the day – tunes that start out in the fast funk years of disco, but also move into some great 80s grooves as well! There's a huge number of cuts here we've never heard before – but that's no surprise, given the way that Tramp puts a set like this together – and titles include "The Freeze" by Steven Toll, "SOS" by Tyree Glenn Jr, "Missing You" by Silky Vincent Group, "Sights & Sounds" by Jeffords Brothers, "Medicine Man" by Grayson Street, "Puss (part 1)" by Oakland Express, "A Fool No Longer" by Afrodisia, "Don't It Make You Feel Good" by Deep South Dance Band, "Touchdown Cleveland Browns" by Ray Jay Band, "Future" by Keither Florence & The Associates, "Anytime" by Empulse, "Beautiful Day" by Mel O Madnezz, and "Dig This Piece" by Progressive Sounds Band. ✨✧ CommonLike Water For Chocolate ... CD
MCA, 2000. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A huge creative leap forward for Common! Com had been slowly moving from a Chicago street poet role into a more universally conscious hip hop soul from record to record to this point, but Like Water For Chocolate is the one that really catapulted him deep into that realm – especially given the excellent, mood setting production of Jay Dee/J Dilla and The Soulquarians. For a little while there, we missed the rawer Relativity era vibe, and we didn't fall as head over heels for Like Water For Chocolate as the world at large did, but in hindsight, maybe we just weren't ready for it – it's easily amongst the best hip hop albums of the period. Titles include "The 6th Sense", "Cold Blooded", "Dooinit", "Geto Heaven Part Two" with D'Angelo, "Time Travelin' (A Tribute To Fela)", "Heat", "The Light", "Thelonius", "Payback Is A Grandmother", "Funky For You", "A Film Called (Pimp)", "Nag Champa (Afrodisiac For The World)", "The Questions" and "A Song For Assata". Pianist Oliver Jones takes a page here from the book of Canadian countryman Oscar Peterson – and works here in a drum-less trio, with beautifully well-rounded support from Red Mitchell on bass and Herb Ellis on guitar! Jones is definitely his own sort of stylist on the keys, but the setting evokes some of the great modes that Ellis used when working with Peterson back in the day – although shaped by that growing sense of color that Herb picked up on his later Concord Records years, which really does a lot to illuminate the record next to the more pointed notes of Jones on the piano. Titles include "Abunchafunk", "Katatura", "Lester Leaps In", "What A Beautiful Sight", and "Jordio". CD

Saravah/Souffle Continu (Italy), 1972. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A wild and groundbreaking record recorded by the great French tenor player Barney Wilen! Although he got his start as a bebopper in the 50's, Wilen sort of dropped out of sight by the end of the 60's – and only emerged from time to time to cut strangely experimental sides. This record is unlike anything he ever made, and features a wild mix of African rhythms, ambient sound, and Wilen's deep deep tenor. By this point, Wilen had been absorbing a lot of different influences, from Coltrane, to Pharoah Sanders, to some of the European free players, and his sound is a weird mish mash of styles that weaves in and out of all the stuff on the record. It's a haunting bit of afro jazz and funky noise, with some cuts that are spacey, and others that are nice and funky. Includes the cuts "Afrika Freak Out" and "Zombizar", plus lots of other goodies! A fantastic pressing – with a bonus 20 page booklet of notes and pictures, and a bonus DVD with a film about the album! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ New BirthNew Birth ... CD
RCA/P&C, 1970. New Copy ... $6.99 15.98
Way more than just another soul group – as The New Birth are almost big enough to be their own sort of soul music village – complete with different neighborhoods along the way! Vocals are handled by the combined groups of The Mint Juleps and Now Sound – gals and guys that soar together wonderfully with backings from The Nite-Liters – who help give the record a righteous undercurrent at most points, which makes the whole thing sound way hipper than any other projects of this nature! Vernon Bulllock acts as the music director for the whole group – really pulling things together with a tightness that's outta sight – and leadership of the project comes from Harvey Fuqua – who arranged and produced as well. There's some massively heavy talent on board for this initial outing, and you can definitely hear it all come into play beautifully – a wonderful harmony of rich talents, without any egos or issues to get in the way. Vocals chance nicely throughout – sometimes a female lead, sometimes male – as do the grooves, which are funky one minute, and mellow the next! Tracks include "All The Way", "Pretty Words Don't Mean A Thing", "One Way Bus", "It's You Or No One", "Do The Funky Chicken", "The Unh Song", and "What'll I Do". Anti, 2017. New Copy Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The cover looks a lot like a vintage soul album from the 70s – and the whole thing sounds a lot like one too – as the vocals of Curtis Harding are maybe even more wonderful here than on his debut album, and set up with these majestic grooves that are completely outta sight! The record blends deep soul, funky currents, and soaring arrangements – all with a no-nonsense, no-gimmick vibe that hardly sounds like a contemporary effort at all – and instead, much more like one of those rare times when a current producer can really get a classic sound just right! Sam Cohen mixed and produced most of the cuts here – so our hat's most likely off to him, as he's in a rare contemporary breed that might include Adrian Younge – but the strength of Harding's ability to slide right into the grooves is also a key part of the album's success, as is the really righteous quality of his songs.
