FugsIt Crawled Into My Hand, Honest ... CD
Reprise/Wounded Bird, 1968. New Copy ... $10.99 12.99
Some of the most tuneful work we've ever heard from The Fugs – tracks that almost border on pop-psych at times, but still get nicely tripped out at other moments! Side one has the trio almost touching territory of other Reprise rock from the times – slightly psychedelic, slightly country, slightly Sunshine at points – and side two is a bit more of a hippy dippy freakout, with a huge number of shorter tunes that flow sweetly into one another! Some of these actually have a great sound art sort of feel, and a fw even get slightly funky too – all with a new sense of tightness that arguably gives the group a lot more power than before! Titles include "Johnny Pissoff Meets The Red Angel", "Burial Waltz", "Crystal Liaison", "Wide Wide River", "Marijuana", "We're Both Dead Now, Alice", "Life Is Strange", "The National Haiku Contest", "The Divine Toe", "Leprechaun", and "Grope Need (Part I)". FugsVirgin Fugs ... LP
ESP, Mid 60s. Very Good- ... $16.99
Incredible early recordings by The Fugs – a set that captures the group at a time when they still had tremendous power and potential! The sessions were originally done for Folkways, then later sold to ESP – and the spare, earthy Folkways approach is perfect for the group, capturing them in a setting that's more of a happening than an actual recording session – a freewheeling hippie-esque party that's perfect for the protest and politics of the songs. Instrumentation includes a lot of hand-held percussion – maracas, tambourine, etc – and the Holy Modal Rounders join the group on some songs as well. Titles include "Saran Wrap", "We're The Fugs", "Caca Rocka", "My Bed Is Getting Crowded", "New Amphetamine Shriek", and "CIA Man". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono pressing. Cover has a split seams and some aging.)

Yama & The Karma DustersEuphoria Blimp Works Presents Yama & The Karma Dusters – Up From the Sewers (transparent red vinyl) ... LP
Euphoria Blimp Works/Lion, Early 70s. New Copy (reissue)... $27.99 29.99
A pretty heady group from the Chicago scene at the start of the 70s – an unusual combo who make music that's a bit freak, a bit fuzz, and a bit folk – almost always with a strongly political vibe! The group were formed in the wake of the Kent State Massacre, and have a very communal approach – led by singer/guitarist Howard Berkman, who rote all the music – but featuring a shifting array of sounds on percussion, piano, organ, and even a bit of violin! At times, there's a current of darkness that almost recalls the third Velvet Underground album, while other moments move between the energy of acoustic Dylan-styled music, and more freewheeling Fugs-like styles. Titles include "Don't Kill The Babies", "Snow Bitch", "Kathleen", "CTA", "I Want To Talk To You", "Evolution", "Hello Big City", and "Like To Make It Back To Puerto Rico". LP, Vinyl record album
(Limited to 150 hand numbered copies.)

✨✧ David Peel & The Lower East SideHave A Marijuana ... LP
Elektra, Late 60s. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Probably one of the most controversial records to be issued on Elektra at the end of the 60s – a rough-edged batch of hippie dippy tracks that shares a fair bit of energy and humor with The Fugs! The tunes here are perhaps a bit more focused than the work of The Fugs, but the group explore similar territory too – not just the drug references in the title, but also the kind of offbeat word play and double-entendres that were common at the time. The set was recorded "live on the streets of New York" – and Peel sings, and plays harmonica and guitar – with other instrumentation that includes two 12-string guitars, bass, and tambourine. Titles include "Mother Where Is My Father", "Here Comes A Cop", "Up Against The Wall", "I've Got Some Grass", "I Do My Bawling In The Bathroom", and "Show Me The Way To Get Stoned". LP, Vinyl record album
(Red label big E stereo pressing. Cover has surface wear and aging.)

✨✧ Country Joe & The FishI Feel Like I'm Fixin' To Die ... LP
Vanguard, 1967. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Maybe the greatest moment ever from Country Joe & The Fish – an insane blend of politics, psychedelia, rock roots, and more – all wrapped up in a nice of carnival-esque style that really lives up to the group's name! Many folks later copied the group – and others, like The Fugs, worked in somewhat similar territory – yet there's a really special sound to the group on this early set, a balance that brings more focus to otherwise trippy moments, more sense to their political agenda, and these sharp instrumental inflections that really send the whole thing home. Blues historian Samuel Charters produced, giving the record another influential quality – and titles include "The Fish Cheer & I-Feel-Like-I'm-Fixin'-To-Die-Rag", "Who Am I", "Pat's Song", "Magoo", "Jam", "Eastern Song", and "Colors For Susan". LP, Vinyl record album
(Vanguard Stereolab pressing, including Vanguard inner sleeve and the fish game! Cover has light wear and a small peel spot on the back paste-on.)
