A fantastically dark Morricone score! Morricone originally wrote this material for the film Quattro Mosche Di Velluto Grigio, the third part of Dario Argento's cult terror trilogy – and until the release of this reissue, only 2 of the tracks ever made it to the public, on a rare single issued by Cinevox in 1971. The leadoff track – "4 Mosche Di Vellutto Grigio (titoli)" – is actually a bit funky, with some very heavy drums and cascading fuzzy guitar riffs that sound very nice. Then, the record moves into spookier material – like the cut "Come Un Madrigale", and a number of self-titled themes – all of which feature strange harpsichord work, dark orchestral passages, and some very spooky production work! Fortunately, the score ends on an upbeat note – a hard driving, beat group sounding version of the main theme that's a nice cap to the whole package! LP, Vinyl record album

A set that pays tribute to the glory days of European sound library music, and which is particularly heavy on modes from the early 80s – that point when library funk was stripped down a lot more from the fuller bands of the previous decade, and relied heavily on beats and keyboards! There's plenty of both here – and the tune are all instrumental, and have enough vibrancy to also allow room for solos from time to time – partly jazz, but mostly cinematic, and with a warmth that also shows a bit of an influence from fusion! A cool cut with many different levels – or maybe "new levels" – a track that's based around a 70s sound library tune by the Modern Sound Quartet, reworked by Koralle, then given a hip hop spin by Illa J! The original version of "Chartreuse" is fantastic – a slow-stepping number that has all sorts of cool keyboards, watery guitar, and light orchestrations – all with a sublime mellow funk soundtrack vibe! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Two great tracks from Carlo Pes – who you might know from his work in the group I Marc 4, and who really makes things great here through a range of cool, jazzy instrumentation! "The Riff" is way more than you'd guess from the title – as it begins with this fast and echoey drum break that's totally great – psychedelic funk at its best, peppered with all sorts of cool organ bits! "Bossa Party" is light and jazzy – maybe more Italian jazz of the late 60s than straight bossa, but with some mighty nice piano and percussion! 7-inch, Vinyl record

A set that's not nearly as electronic as you might expect – at least not in any sort of cold, computer-styled way – as the record is full of plenty of great analog touches on keyboards, basslines, and other bits – all of which really give the whole thing a very warm glow overall! The tunes are in the best classic keyboard sound library modes – maybe an evolution from Alan Hawkshaw through Piero Umiliani, into territory that's definitely Gianni Safred's own – as it's very hard for us to even begin to link the particular style of these tunes to any other record in the genre! A whole new world of grooves we've never heard before – music from a short stretch on the Italian scene when local artists were really taken with the new developments in Afro Funk, and started to serve up some fresh styles of their own! The music here is maybe a blend of West African sounds and sound library modes – often leaner than the large group ensembles of Fela and some of his contemporaries, which also makes the tracks perfect for the clubs as well – but with a vibe that's sharper and tighter than some of the Afro/disco crossover cuts of the time! Larry Manteca's the name of the group, not a single guy – and over the course of the past decade, they created all the wonderfully groovy instrumentals on this set – new recordings, but handled with a style that really goes back to Italian soundtrack and sound library gems from the past! The instrumentation features lots of great flute, played with a jazzy vibe that's sometimes exotic – a quality that's also echoed by the strong use of percussion in the group – sometimes in an earthy way, sometimes more in that 70s way when a conga might slide nicely right into a more electric groove! There's plenty of great organ and keyboards on the set – including the cool "marimba piano" – on titles that include "Tuareg Road", "Around The Island", "Love & Bones", "Hanuman", "Ritual", and "Zombie Mandingo". Excellent work from a group who really live up to their name – as they bring some sweet psychedelic touches to music that's a warm blend of jazz and funk, with slight Latin inflections – often handled with a looseness that allows for some nicely flowing passages on guitar, and with these wonderful sonic qualities that resonate strongly with some of our favorite post-rock material from years back! One of the most seductive sound library albums ever recorded by Piero Umiliani – a set that was originally issued under his Zalla pseudonym, but which has all the best jazzy grooves of some of his famous soundtrack material from the end of the 60s! As on those records, Umiliani plays a host of great keyboards, especially organ – over rhythms that are mellow-stepping and slightly funky – often updated with modes borrowed from bossa nova, but brought into a more sensuous Italian soundtrack setting – balanced with nice touches on flute, guitar, and other instrumentation as well. The whole thing's wonderful – as lovely as your favorite soundtrack work by Umiliani, Piero Piccioni, or Armando Trovajoli – with titles that include "Porta D'Oriented", "Tanto Lontano", "Pianure D'Asia", "Oriente Rosso", "Prime Nebbie", "Nel Parco", "Vecchie Strade", and "Laguna Tropicale". A really funky theme from the Italian scene of the 70s – served up here in two great versions! The main title take has this fast-moving bassline that's peppered with slower keyboards that are balanced with some more dramatic pops in the instrumentation – which then take over as the drums ride on more strongly, giving the whole thing a great funky crime/cop feel! The "sequence 1" version is slower, with heavier drums – and cool harmonica next to the electric piano in the grooves! 7-inch, Vinyl record

A fantastic funky sound library gem – one that begins with this wicked fast drum break over riffing guitar – while Gianni Oddi starts to warm things up with sweet keyboards, and then snakes in a tenor sax solo too! Isabella Sodani provides these sexy vocals that are whispered in the background – leaving plenty of room for the keys and tenor! "Geronimo" is equally cool – with this very offbeat groove that almost sounds like it's dipping into water, and then this cool bassline part that's almost got a "Soul Makossa" vibe – as does the saxophone part that comes into play over the top! 12-inch, Vinyl record

A sound library album that's a real cut above – a set that maybe feels more like a film score overall, given the richness of the music – yet one that's also got the sense of variety you'd love in a great library record too! Giuliano Sorgini makes all these moments that sparkle with warmth and delight – maybe the sonic complexity of Morricone at times, balanced with the tunefulness of Armando Trovajoli at his best – as shifting instrumentation pushes things way past just simple short grooves, and delivers a wonderfully rich and often groovy palette of sounds in the process! Two killer cuts from this rare 70s Italian soundtrack – both of them great! "Chaser" has this way of glowing while grooving – keyboards soaring out over drums, then spacing out a bit, then coming back warm with the groove, which also includes some percussion! "Hard Times" is a bit faster and funkier, but has a very similar vibe – that understated version of funk that made Umiliani's work such a great change from American soundtracks of the time! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Weird and wonderful sounds from a very electric man – the mighty Piero Umiliani, an Italian composer who first rose to fame for a set of groundbreaking film scores in the 60s – then moved into even more experimental sound library work in the following decade! This set has Piero working in all sorts of cool electronic styles – never too outside or avant, but definitely in the darker side of his spectrum – although almost always with that playful sense of a tune that made his 60s music such a delight! The range of instruments varies – Umiliani clearly had a studio that was full of brand-new, top-shelf technologies – and titles are mostly from the mid 70s, with a few later cuts from 1983. The first-ever collection to look at the lost sound library work of Ezy Minus – born Enzo Minuti, and a very self-contained talent who worked out of his own Studio 67 on the scene in Bologna! There's a scope of material here that's really great, and a bit different than some more familiar sound library music – definitely some of the funk you'd hope for, but also some more song-based moments, and plenty of jazzy currents that definitely will have us digging for more of Ezy's work in years to come!
