Justo AlmarioInterlude ... LP
Uno Melodic/Expansion (UK), 1981. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99
The greatest album ever from reedman Justo Almario – and one of the most obscure sets to ever come out on the Uno Melodic label of Roy Ayers! Roy Ayers produced the whole thing, and handled arrangements with Justo – and the whole thing feels a lot like a jazzy instrumental take on Roy's own music of the time – but with a focus more on the tenor and soprano sax work of Almario! Other players on the set include Mudbone on piano, Greg Moore on guitar, and Oscar Brashear on trumpet – and the record's got nicely spiritual currents mixed with very soulful fusion – a superb blend throughout, and very different than the slicker recordings that Justo put out in later years. Titles include the Roy Ayers tunes "Sho You Right", "Interlude", and "Aquarian Mood" – plus Almario originals "Seventh Avenue", "I'm The One That Loves You", and "Sir John". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Don BlackmanDon Blackman ... CD
Arista/Expansion (UK), 1982. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A jazz funk masterpiece, and THE record by the legendary Don Blackman – the only one issued under his own name for many many years, and a famous little set that's been sampled endlessly over the years, and for good reason! The vibe here is one that's barely been matched again – a blend of 70s fusion, bassy funk, and even tighter riffing – all put together with a greater depth and sense of soul than most other records of its type. Blackman's a GRP contemporary of Bernard Wright, Tom Browne, and Weldon Irvine – and there's bits of all their sound in the work here, but somehow Don does it even better – hitting these grooves, notes, and lines that seem to fall from the heavens – and which still stand as some of the hippest music of his generation. A record to file proudly next to your copies of Ramp and James Mason – and like those gems, the kind of record that only happens once in an artists career! Titles include "You Ain't Hip", "Yabba Dabba Do", "Heart's Desire", "Deaf Hook Up Connection", "Never Miss A Thing", and "Holding You Loving You", and "Since You Been Away So Long". CD

BreakwaterBreakwater/Splashdown (with bonus track) ... CD
Expansion (UK), 1978/1980. New Copy ... $15.99
A landmark pairing of records from a group who only ever gave the world two albums – but who've gone on to have a huge influence over the years! The first album, the initial offering from Breakwater, is a masterful blend of jazzy fusion and mellower soul – a sound sifted together so perfectly, it really tops the rest of the combo's contemporaries – hitting a careful balance that never gets too cheesy or commercial, and which still manages to glow as strongly into the 21st century as it did when first released back in the day! The sound here is sublime – warm, but never sleepy – jazzy, but never cliched – and mixed in such a way that the vocals and instruments almost get center stage in the spotlight without trying to crowd one another out. Titles include the incredible "Work it Out" – worth the price of the record alone – plus "No Limit", "That's Not What We Came Here For", "Free Yourself", "Do It Till The Fluid Gets Hot", and "Feel Your Way". Splashdown has a perfect blend of jazz and soul that only a few groups in the 70s really got right – maybe Pleasure, or The Blackbyrds – and most certainly Breakwater, who were one of the reigning champions of the scene! Rhythms are often upbeat, but not in a disco or club-oriented way – and the instrumentation is tight, but never slick or smooth – always nicely funky with a nice little crackle, even on the mellow cuts – in a way that's opened up this album to new audiences for many years. This set's got a nice bit of moog that wasn't on the group's first – used almost in Mizell-like to further enhance the sound – and titles include the classics "Say You Love Me Girl", "Let Love In", "Time", and "The One In My Dreams". CD also features a bonus track – "No Limit (ext version)". CD

✨✧ BrigetteStarlite Lounge ... CD
Expansion (UK), 2005. Used ... Out Of Stock
Lovely work from singer Brigette – recorded with a sound that's warm, sunny, and soulful – and helped out by some nice jazzy touches from guitarists Dori Caymmi and Heito Pereira, and flautist Hubert Laws! There's a quality here that reminds us of some of our favorite jazzy soul of the 70s – tight, but never too slick – and classy, yet still always wonderfully soulful in the lyrics. Plus, the tunes have some great Braziliany touches that really bring out the west coast vibe in the music – skipping around with a sense of lightness and life that we really love! Titles include "Much Too Much", "Star", "My Oh My", "Somehow", "Betcha", "Take Me (rmx)", "Agua De Beber", "Is It Love", and "What Would You Say". CD

Brit Funk AssociationLifted ... CD
Expansion (UK), 2020. New Copy ... $16.99
Excellent work from a very well-named group – as the contemporary combo forwards the legacy of British funk in the late 70s and early 80s – as the supergroup features original members of Central Line, Beggar & Co, Light Of The World, and Hi-Tension – all seminal groups from back in the day! The sound is a bit more modern, but the approach is very much the same – superbly crafted grooves that start way down in the rhythm section, then bubble on up with lots of jazzy solo work over the top – and lead vocals from Paul McLean, who's also joined by some of the other members of the group. The whole thing is a great meeting of the minds – with lots of the sophisticated, sometimes jazz-based touches that generation of British soul was so good at – on tunes that include "Lifted Up", "Summer", "Smilin", "For Tomorrow", "Sign Of The Times", "Step On Board", "BFA", and "This Is What We Do". Expansion (UK), 2008. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
80s-styled soul from Cool Million – a contemporary duo, but one with a great ear for the classic sounds of the past! There's a fair bit of keyboard and bassline interplay on the set – very much in the best spirit of the 80s groove generation, especially some of the less hit-oriented work of the time. Most tunes are upbeat, and would fit well on the dancefloor – yet still also have a great degree of soul as well, thanks to vocals from a range of guest singers, and some keyboards that bring in occasional jazzy bits too! Singers include Donald McCollum, Nathalie Dorra, Laura Jackson, Diane Marsh, CJ Anthony, and others – and titles include "Going Out Tonight", "Damn Beautiful", "Pullin Me Back", "Naughty Girl", "Closer", "Everything Ain't Everything", "Musiq", "Make Me Yours", and "It's Too Late". De-Lite/Expansion (UK), 1979. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A disco dazzler from the glory days of the De-Lite Records scene – served up here by a group who really hit all the best sort of groove's you'd expect from that legendary imprint! The album's a disco record, sure – but it's also got the deeper roots that come from the De-Lite commitment to earlier 70s funk – co-produced and written by Leroy Burgess and Stan Lucas, both of whom sing on the record – and also get some help from some great female vocalists too! Although the cover makes the album look a bit like a throwaway set, the overall quality is very high, and quite soulful – thanks to strong work by Burgess and Patrick Adams, who also does a bit of arrangement – with that ear to the underground that he always had on his best records. Titles include "Reaching", "Slipped Disco", "It's Not The Same", "Walk Before You Run", and "All". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Gene DunlapIt's Just The Way I Feel/Party In Me ... CD
Capitol/Expansion (UK), 1981. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Two Capitol classics from the great Gene Dunlap – back to back on a single CD! First up is It's Just The Way I Feel – a classic soulful fusion album recorded and released during the crucial years of the "Capitol Rare" sound! Gene Dunlap is a jazz drummer at heart – but he's got a flair for the modern soul song – and in the same style as Norman Connors or Harvey Mason before him, he manages to put together a strong record of grooves and ballads from behind the kit! The strongest point of the record is work by The Ridgeways, a female soul trio who sing on the best tracks, giving them a smooth Jones Girls-ish kind of sound. The album includes two modern soul classics – "Before You Break My Heart" and "It's Just the Way I Feel" – plus "Love Dancin", "Rock Radio", "I Got You", and "Surest Things Can Change". Party In Me is wonderful work from Gene Dunlap – a jazzy soul drummer, and also a maestro with a killer ear for a modern soul groove! The album's got a mix of grooves and sophistication that are a bit like the best early 80s material from Roy Ayers – never chartbound, and never too commercial – but nice and tight, and really well put together! The instrumentation has plenty of jazzy 80s groove touches – especially in the keyboards – and Dunlap does a nice job of balancing up beat tracks with the mellow moments we love so much in his work. Vocals are from a variety of singers – including the great Ethel Beatty, who'd sung with Roy Ayers – plus Phillippe Wynne, Pam Lawson, and Gene himself – and titles include "Something Inside My Head", "Something Special", "Corner Pocket", "There Will Never Be Another (Like You)", "Party In Me", "Jam City", and "This One's On Me". Two great tracks from Dee Edwards – from a time when the Detroit singer was really getting a chance to shine! "Put The World On Hold" has a sweet lyric over a soaring groove – not entirely clubby, maybe more modern soul overall – with a slightly complex set of changes that really make the tune stand out! "Put Your Love On The Line" has a really cool funky vibe – upbeat club, but with an intensity to the instrumentation, which really seems to bring out the best in Dee's vocals! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Uno Melodic/Expansion (UK), 1980. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A legendary project from Roy Ayers – and a record that's almost as in-demand as his classic Ramp album! The Eighties Ladies were a hip vocal quartet, with the soulful Sylvia Striplin on lead – and they work here in a mix of perfect Ayers-styled grooves – often using female harmonies in just the same way as Ramp, but coming across with a style that's a bit more pointed at the clubs, and very much in the same mode as Striplin's classic solo album too! Roy brings plenty of jazzy undercurrents to the set – those sinister shapes and changes that always make his music so great – and Edwin Birdsong's help with arrangements ensure that there's some suitably offbeat twists and turns, which really keeps things interesting. Titles include the classic break "Turned On To You", plus vocal and instrumental versions of "Ladies Of The Eighties", and the tracks "Tell Him", "It's Easy To Move", "I Knew That Love", "He Is Mine Forever", and "Sing Me". Maurice White produced the whole set, and it's got a soaring spacey sound that provides a perfect spiritual edge to the girls vocals – taking them way past the hits, into much more sophisticated soul territory. There's a beautifully righteous vibe going on throughout – a sound that's almost like Minnie Riperton at her 70s Capitol best – and titles include "Love Vibes", "Walking The Line", "Time Is Passing By", "I Wouldn't Lie", "Smile", and "Spirit Of Summer". A rare lost modern soul gem, which we too rarely come across! Recorded in 1985 for the Philly World label as Gardner's debut LP, the story as we understand it is that this record never really hit the shelves – for some reason it was pulled at the last minute by the label. We can't figure out why, as the set's got very nice 80s Philly production and arrangements courtesy Dexter Wansel, Bobby Eli and Nick Martinelli – with a smooth 80s groove soul sound that would have been a big hit then, and is even more sought after now. The album includes Joanna's great cut "Pick Up The Pieces", an excellent stepper's cut, plus "We Can Make It", "Special Feelings", "Watching You", "Spooky" and "I Could Never Love Another Like You". GonzalezGonzalez ... CD
Soul Brother/Expansion (UK), 1974. New Copy ... $9.99
Sweet funky jazz from the 70s! Gonzalez were an obscure UK combo – probably known a lot better over in England, but pretty darn hard to find over here in America – and they've got a tight style that reminds us of some of the more well-produced jazz funk coming out on labels like Blue Note or Blue Thumb during the mid 70s. Some cuts have vocals, but most of the record's instrumental – and it's filled with great guitars, and some excellent sax work that goes way past the usual funky tenor line! The groove's a nicely sophisticated blend of jazz funk and modern soul – with the kind of groove that you might expect to hear on some of the Capitol Rare compilations. The CD brings together cuts from the group's first album Gonzalez, plus a few more from the album Our Only Weapon Is Our Music. Titles include "Pack It Up", "Funky Frith Street", "Saoco", "Ahwai Five-O", "Rissoled", and "Adelanto Nightride". Very nice – and the kind of group we love to discover! CD

✨✧ Al Hudson & the Soul PartnersEspecially For You/Cherish (with bonus tracks) ... CD
ABC/Expansion (UK), 1977. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Two fantastic early albums by Al Hudson – working here with his initial group, The Soul Partners! First up is Especially For You – a record that's kind of a first chapter to all the excellent work by One Way to come – even though Al's not using that group name at this time! The record's got this cool, classy vibe – an update of an earlier Detroit soul mode, and one that maybe followed that city's shift a few years later than 70s soul changes in Philly during the decade – and handled with a similar blend of groovers and mellow cuts! The vibe is similar to the great shift The Dramatics were making on ABC Records at the time – and Al and the group work here with production by Al Perkins and arrangements by Jimmy Roach. Titles include "Baby Let Me Love You", "I Got A Notion You Got The Motion", "Real Love", "You're So Wonderful", and "Trying To Prove My Love". Cherish is a funky soul classic from Al Hudson and the Soul Partners – a second full length set, and one that really has Hudson finding his groove! The rhythms are funkier than before – thanks to strong work on bass from Kevin McCord, who also joins Al a bit on vocals – in a mode that still continues the group's strong work on midtempo numbers, but also maybe answers a 70s disco wave with more of a Detroit funk overall! Great work from the group that would later turn into One Way – with titles that include "Tripped, Slipped, Stumbled, & Fell", "If You Get Caught", "If You Feel Like Dancing", and "I Like Everything About You". CD also features bonus tracks – "Feelings (7" version)" and "If You Feel Like Dancin (12" version)". CD

ABC/Expansion (UK), 1978/1979. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A pair of ABC Records gems from Al Hudson & The Soul Partners – back to back on a single CD! Spreading Love is excellent early work from Al Hudson – a soulful talent who stood his own in the late 70s, forging an up-tempo funk sound that lived long past disco, and which was sort of a platform for groups of the 80s to build a new dancefloor sound. Hudson relied heavily on bass-y funk to hit his groove, but he also gave strong focus to the good singers who worked with his groups – adding in good ballads that act as a showcase to members like bassist Kevin McCord, who sings some great vocals on this set. The album kicks off with the up-tempo groover "Spread Love", an anthemic dancefloor tune that almost points the way towards soulful house, and it's got some other nice cuts, like the ballads "Lost Inside Of You" and "Love Me Forever", plus the funky numbers "How Do You Do", and "Dance, Get Down". Happy Feet is joyous, bouncy sounds from the legendary Al Hudson – a sweet little set with his Soul Partners group, done in a mode that's right up there with the best music of his One Way combo! The grooves are uptempo, yet are much more rooted in ensemble funk than some of the disco of Al's contemporaries – and if anything, the album really shows a great evolution from the funk bands of the previous generation to a newer, more sophisticated style overall. Hudson's work at the helm is wonderful – and helps steer the group towards some nice mellow moments too – with arrangements from Kevin McCord, Rudy Robinson, and Dave Roberson. Alicia Myers serves up some great early vocals with the group – and titles include "I Don't Want You To Leave Me", "Another Love Song", "You Can Do It", "In The Basement", "Call Me", and "Rock". CD

A really great underground groover from the 70s – an album that hardly got any circulation at the time, but which has gone onto become the stuff of legend over the years! The album's a bit unusual, in that it almost feels like an expanded package of 12" singles – as the a-side features four vocal tracks that are all great club numbers – then the b-side has all the same songs, but presented as instrumentals! Soul Brother/Expansion/Chiaroscuro, 1977. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
One of our favorite albums ever – and every track is a masterpiece! The album was originally cut for the tiny Chiaroscuro label in 1977 – and it's got a sound that's unlike anything else we can think of – soaring, soulful, jazzy, and righteous – wrapped up in a blend that's never been done this perfectly again! James Mason's a player who's know for a bit of keyboard work with other artists – but here, he's really working as a collective power – bringing together a brilliant ensemble that work as one to hit some sublime sounds – much in the way that Roy Ayers could work some key magic with his groups at the same time, but with a vibe that's very different too. Players include Ayers associates Justo Almario on saxes and Philip Woo on piano – and a young Narada Michael Walden adds some excellent drums to the record – a lot more powerful and funky than on most of his own albums! Lead vocals are by Clarice Taylor – who's got this unique voice that really makes the record – proud, but sensitive at the same time too – and Mason plays lots of Fender Rhodes, polymoog, Arp, and a bit of guitar. Titles include the breakbeat classic "Funny Girl", the monster groover "Sweet Power Your Embrace", the funky "Slick City", and the massive "Free" – but every cut's a winner, and others include "Mbewe", "Rhythm Of Life", and "Dreams". This is the kind of album that makes us proud to be in business! CD

EMI/Expansion (UK), 1989. New Copy ... $16.99
The O'Jays hit a bit of a new jack mode with this late 80s set – picking up the beats, and giving themselves a chunkier rhythm than usual – but all while keeping things in that laidback territory that suits their famous vocals so well! The mellowest cuts here are our favorites – as they remind us that the O'Jays perfection never falters, but is especially nice when the trio are right up front, and really able to dominate a tune with their well-tuned sense of harmony and warm interplay! The group members wrote a number of the songs on the set – a nice change from the Gamble & Huff era – and the younger Gerald Levert helped out a bit on the album, which might explain some of the Levert-like touches in the grooves. Titles include "Out Of My Mind", "Leave It Alone", "Fading", "Rainbow", "Friend Of A Friend", "Have You Had Your Love Today", and "Serious Hold On Me". CD features bonus tracks – "Serious Hold On Me (single mix)", "Serious Hold On Me (inst)", "Out Of My Mind (radio)", "Out Of My Mind (Soul 2 mix)", "Have You Had Your Love Today (club)", and "Have You Had Your Love Today (power radio mix)". One Way featuring Al Hudson#New Old School ... CD
Expansion (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $11.99
The title definitely gets it right – because the album's a new one from the legendary One Way, but definitely holds on to the sound of their old school classics! As you can guess from the cover, Al Hudson's still at the helm – working with an evolved version of the group that includes some younger musicians and a few contemporary touches – but all shaped towards that great blend of groovers and midtempo numbers that One Way brought to their wonderful albums on MCA at the start of the 80s! And yes, the costumes may look a bit dated on the front cover, but the production and sound aren't at all – thanks in part to a shifting lineup of singers that includes Hudson, Jeanette Jackson, Dave Roberson Jr, and Candyce Grey. Titles include "Heat It Up", "Let's Dance", "Don't Kno What Cha Missin", "Hard To Walk Away", "Doin It Like This", "We Won't Stop", "I Wonder If She Knows", "I Want Your Luv", "U Liked To My Mama", "Hold On To U", and "Old School Funk Tonite". Expansion (UK), 2013. Used ... $9.99
The first we've heard from this UK group – but given the strength of the record, we're betting we'll be digging them for many years to come! The album's a great no-nonsense contemporary soul affair – put together in a really old school sort of way that recalls the energy of Brand New Heavies or Incognito at their best – with a similar blend of funk and jazz alongside some positive, upbeat lyrics – and an overall groove that's definitely inspired by the best of the 70s soul generation! Male and female vocals mix together to give the record a nice full sound – and titles include "Rainy Day In London", "There's A Time For Everything", "Classic Lady", "Distance Can Be Sweet", "Give Into The Night", and "Morning Light". LJ ReynoldsLJ Reynolds (1981)/Travelin ... CD
Capitol/Expansion (UK), 1981/1982. New Copy ... $16.99
A pair of classic early 80s soul albums from ex-Dramatics singer LJ Reynolds! The self-titled '81 set is killer material in a modern Detroit mode all the way through – with top-shelf production by Reynolds, Don Davis, and Ronnie McNeir/ Ronnie, who'd been lost to the industry for a few years, also re-emerges as a writer on the songs "Southern Pearl", "Lonely Superstar", and "Ain't No Woman Like My Baby". The real standout, though, is the amazing cut "Key To The World", a killer steppers track that has a hook that won't quit, and this wonderful brassy finish that gives the track a really triumphant sound that works perfectly with the righteous lyric. LJ Reynolds' sounds great on '82's Travelin', too – stepping even more strongly away from his work with The Dramatics, and emerging as one of the best male soul acts of the early 80s! The production on this one is split between Reynolds and Don Davis, in a mode that's contemporary, but which allows LJ plenty of space for old school vocal expression – that far-reaching style of singing that always made him stand out strongly from the pack! There's a sublime mellow version of Aretha Franklin's "Call Me" on the set – and other tracks include "Words", "Trust In Me", "Say You Will", "You & Me", "Let Me Satisfy You", and "Fast Action"... Incredible soul jazz from the great Pharoah Sanders – two great numbers from his post-Impulse Records years! "You've Got To Have Freedom" is maybe one of the greatest cuts that Sanders ever did during this time – a long-spun, really anthemic number that has this fast modal groove, rising vocals, and a tremendous tenor solo in the middle! The flipside features his own take on the Marvin Gaye tune "Got To Give It Up" – done as a funky instrumental, with a bit more electricity than you might expect – but still a very searing tenor solo in the middle! 12-inch, Vinyl record

Uno Melodic/Expansion (UK), 1981. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Amazing! This lost Roy Ayers-produced gem from the early 80s has not only been one of the biggest sample records of all time, but it's also become one of the holy grails of the groovy record collecting scene! It's a stellar bit of jazzy soul with the same production vibe that's characterized Roy's best work – but made all the more sublime thanks to Sylvia Striplin's beautifully fragile and soulful vocals, which sound a bit like Minnie Riperton's at times – but also has a fuller, richer quality too. The record's got arrangements by Sylvia, Roy, and James Bedford (who also recorded for Uno Melodic), and it includes classics like "Give Me Your Love", "You Can't Turn Me Away", "Look Towards The Sky", "All Alone", and a great cover of Roy Ayers' "Searchin". Expansion (UK), 1982. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99
A fantastic early chapter in the Incognito story – a record put together by Jean Paul "Bluey" Maunick as a follow-up to the earlier Jazzfunk album – and a set that maybe has even more jazz and funk than that set did overall! Although done back in the 80s, the set clearly shows the return to richer, more soulful elements that would make Incognito such a benchmark group over the years – sharp instrumentation that's light years past the more programmed spirit of the time, topped with vocals from Bluey himself, plus work on keyboards from Peter Hinds, and both piano and vocals from Mattie Collins. Titles include "Hot Apple", "The Warrior", "Midnight Oil", "Bustin Loose", "Warrior's Theme", "Destination", "Je Ne Sais Quoi", "Drive", and "Unsung Heroes". LP, Vinyl record album

A fantastic sweet soul album – and one of our favorite records ever from the New Jersey soul empire of All-Platinum Records! The set's got a spacey soul sound that's really wonderful – quite different than some of the clubbier modes that other female singers were using at the time – and the record features both production and songwriting work by Harry Ray and Al Goodman of The Moments, who give Retta Young the same sweet touch they brought to their own excellent records for the label! The album's one of those really special female soul sets that goes way beyond expectation or familiar modes – a record we'd put right up there with other rare classics by singers like Ann Sexton or Gloria Scott. That doesn't mean that these tunes aren't groovers – just that many were so far ahead of their time, they've only gotten full acclaim in recent decade – thanks to new discovery by DJs and hip hoppers, who've sampled more than a few of these cuts. Bradley's Barn is a crucial album in the sound of late 60s Warner – recorded by west coasters The Beau Brummels in the heart of Tennessee, at the legendary studios of country producer Owen Bradley! This meeting of west and country is fantastic – a really incredible extension of earlier folksy rock styles forged by Dylan, Fred Neil, Tim Buckley, and others – handled with incredible care, and a style that's equally honest and ironic – but coming together with a sound that's unlike anything else we can think of – one of those rare few albums that somehow draws from a wealth of inspiration, but manages to make something completely standout in the process – almost a Feelies/Good Earth for its own generation! A beautiful expansion of a famous moment in creative journalism – the famous 1968 issue of Esquire magazine that featured William S Burroughs, Terry Southern, Allen Ginsberg, Jean Genet, and Abbie Hoffman at the 1968 Democratic Convention in Chicago! The results of that tumultuous event have been well-documented – but the special selection of correspondents was very unique – and was also documented heavily by photographer Michael Cooper. Cooper's shots appeared in the large special issue of the magazine in 1968 – but this book expands way past those shots, with dozens more taken at the time – showing the conflict in the street, the literary figures in action, and everything else that was happening at the time. The book includes expanded writings by Southern, too – and has a great balance of text and image, with 130 pages that mix black and white photos with writings. Book

Planet Groove (Japan), 2004. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The title's an apt one – as the set features remixes and remakes of tracks from Mitsu's wonderful New Awakening set! The range of talents on the set is really great – with an array of styles that include London broken beat, American hip hop, Japanese club jazz, and lots lots more! Mitsu's core tracks are great enough, but the expansion on the set really take them to a new level – opening up the already playful Mitsu sound with a fresh new take on the music. This second volume features contributions from Rich Medina, Soul Village, Kid Sublime, Phil Asher, Medaphor, and Kaidi Tatham – on titles that include "Feelin Alright (Agent K rmx)", "Stolen Moments (DJ Kiyo rmx)", "Mood For Otis (DJ Mitsu rmx)", "Intro (Grooveman Spot rmx)", "Rendezvous (Monk's Revolution rmx)", and "Right Here (Rock City edit)". Liberty/United Artists, 1970. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A really great early album from George Duke – quite different than his work for MPS to follow – and more in a groovy late 60s California mode! There's a vibe here that resonates nicely with some other late 60s sessions on Liberty Records – kind of an expansion of a Cali soul jazz mode, similar to the style the Crusaders were starting to go for – but colored in with some of Duke's obviously hip inclinations as well! George plays some great electric piano on the record – and other players include Ernie Watts on tenor and flute, and Jay Graydon on guitar – on titles that include "Soul Watcher", "Since You Asked", "Shades Of Joy", "Alcatraz", and "A Little Bit Of Seven". LP, Vinyl record album
(Liberty/UA rainbow label pressing. Cover has a promo sticker, wear, and light staining. Vinyl has a short click on "Soul Watcher" and "Games People Play".)

Capitol, 1968. New Copy 2CD ... $19.99 21.99
A sublime album from the great Bobbie Gentry – and maybe her strongest full-length set recorded during the classic Capitol years! The title's "sweete" is a hillbilly play on the word "suite" – and the album definitely works as an extended suite of tracks – almost a concept album, and one that mixes lots of Bobbie's own tunes with a few well-chosen covers – all set to larger arrangements that feature strings from Jimmie Haskell and horns directed by Shorty Rogers – all while Gentry leads the combo at the core! Later Capitol albums had Gentry doing a lot of covers, and maybe losing her identity a bit – but this set is more of an expansion on the mode she brought to the "Billie Joe" single – with tracks that include "Reunion", "Mornin Glory", "Sermon", "Penduli Pendulum", "Jessye Lisabeth", "Courtyard", "Okolona River Bottom Band", and "Refractions". 2CD version features a brand new stereo mix from the original tapes, the original mono mix of the album, and bonus tracks that include demos of "Mornin Glory", "Sermon", "Jessye Lisabeth", "Louisiana Man", "Refractions", "The Way I Do", and "Feelin Good" – plus an instrumental of "Okolona River Bottom Band", and an alternate take of "Mississippi Delta". Capitol (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 8CDs ... Out Of Stock
A stunning tribute to the wonderful Bobbie Gentry – and maybe the first package to really show the world how much she has to offer past her one classic crossover hit! Bobbie started out like a rocket with the country gem "Ode To Billie Joe" – a tune she wrote herself, and followed with lots of other great music on the original debut album here – which then set the scene for a great expansion into other modes, as Capitol Records really opened up their resources for Gentry to record in the late 60s! This huge package features everything that Bobbie ever recorded for the label – not just some great full albums, but also some rare singles, demos, and alternate takes – plus 75 unreleased tracks (!) – and then a full incredible album Live At The BBC – which features 26 tracks of Gentry really knocking it out of the park. The BBC material has these really dark, brooding orchestrations – almost like Bobbie's getting some Scott Walker late 60s backings – and the whole box set might be worth it alone for that double-length album! The package is a very cool 10" slipcover – with a huge booklet of notes, postcards, lyric inserts, and more – 177 tracks in all, with albums that include Ode To Billie Joe, The Delta Sweete, Local Gentry, Bobbie Gentry & Glen Campbell, Touch Em With Love, Fancy, Patchwork, and Live At The BBC. Not Two (Poland), 2016. New Copy 5CD ... Out Of Stock
A wonderful large format recording from bassist Barry Guy – working here at the head of the Blue Shroud Band, an improvising ensemble that echoes some of his earlier work with the London Jazz Composers Orchestra! The extended work is an expansion of an earlier piece that Guy recorded with pianist Marilyn Crispell – her Three Poems For Cecil Taylor – stretched out here with a more embellished sense of imagination, but still using some of the core texts created by Crispell for the original work! The piece spans five long CDs – with sections broken down and notated to reflect the work of the many great improvisers in the set – a lineup that includes Michel Godard on serpent and tuba, Agusti Fernandez on piano, Torben Snekkestad on soprano and tenor, Jurg Wickihalder on soprano and alto, Percy Pursglove on trumpet, Julius Gabriel on baritone and soprano, Maya Homburger on violin, Fanny Paccoud on viola, Ben Dwyer on guitar, and both Ramon Lopez and Lucas Niggli on percussion. Savina Yannatou provides voice on the poetic passages, Guy plays bass and leads – and the whole thing is beautifully packaged! CD

LasperanzaSeeds ... CD
Dome (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $7.99
A tight debut from Lasperanza – aka arranger producer Rico Garofalo, who put together the whole set as a tribute to older jazz, funk, and soul that laid the seeds for his own music in recent years! The record has a vibe that's a bit like that strong UK soul tradition started with Incognito, and carried forth by a number of other artists in recent years – with a really strong vision at the core, handled by a musician who's also a maestro in the studio – who then opens the door to a shifting array of singers who really make the record sparkle with a great sense of variety! Lasperanza has sax or flute solos on most tracks, and seems ready to rise up there with the cream of UK soul labels like Dome or Expansion in recent years – and guest singers include Decosta Boyce, Hannah White, LaAerial, Kayleigh O'Neill, Colette Connor, Keni Stevens, and Izzy Chase. Most tracks are remakes of soulful classics, completely changed up – and titles include "Let's Stay Together", "Give Me The Night", "Kilimanjaro", "Under The Moon & Over The Sky", "Early Morning Love", "Working Day & Night", "In The Mood", and "It Should Have Been You". Easily one of the most successful albums of the British jazz rock years – but still a longtime favorite of ours as well! Mike Oldfield sets a whole new standard here for concept rock – not only by working on a single album-length composition that spans all of sides one and two, but also by playing all instruments himself – in a one man symphony of sound that's pretty darn great! The main theme of the piece will be recognizable from it's stripped-down use in The Exorcist – but we really love Oldfield's expansion on it here in a range of different overdubbed instruments, which are also sometimes processed – and then introduced by Mike in a spoken part that's one of the highlights of the album. Jo StanceJo Stance – The Stance Brothers Introduces A Magnificent New Talent ... CD
Ricky Tick (Finland), 2010. Used ... $9.99
A whole new groove for The Stance Brothers – every bit as funky as before, but with an added soul component as well! The lovely lady on the front cover is Johanna Forsti – aka Jo Stance – a vocalist with a sound that's got plenty of 60s soul modes overall – warm and smooth one minute, hard and raspy the next – giving the whole album the feel of a batch of lost singles from the late 60s US – particularly the more mod versions of soul that might have played big on the UK scene! All the best Stance grooves are firmly in place – augmented by trumpet from Jukka Eskola and saxes from Timo Lassy – and the shift to soul is a wonderful expansion in sound for the Ricky Tick label, who handle this mode as well as they do classic jazz. Titles include "Changes", "Sticky", "I'll Find You", "Until Tomorrow", "Treated", "Shout", "Stand Tall", "Me & You", and "Tell Me/Girls". CD

Seth Trachy is the saxophone leader of the group, but the set also features some guest Miguel Zenon on alto – and the two horns often do a great job of flowing and fluttering together – over nicely dynamic rhythms from Glenn Zaleski on piano, Pablo Menares on bass, and Felix Lecaros on drums! Yet even the core quartet material is great – as there's this bold, chunky energy to the album that pulsates out of the rhythm trio, then gives great encouragement to Trachy to make these long, blocky lines with his solo! The set features one vocal number, with lots of guests – the end track "ChiChi" – and other titles include "Water Bat", "JoJo Yelli", "Prantz", and "Expansion Contraction". CD

Unseen Worlds, 1976. New Copy 2CDs ... $12.99 14.99
An early live performance by two of the more compelling modern composers of the 70s – both artists working here in mode that fuses their larger ideas onto the idiom of a rock band – but all with a vibe that resonates strongly with their later releases on the Lovely Music label! The first half of the set was composed by Blue Gene Tyranny, the second by Peter Gordon – but the group here is the same throughout, recorded at a live concert in Berkley, providing a great precursor to the later, better-known careers of both composers. There are vocals from Patrice Magnet on some tracks (including a few with lyrics by Kathy Acker), but the songs are often long, and have qualities that reflect the bigger concept works of both Gordon and Tyranny. Musicians include Peter Gordon on saxes and mixing, Tyranny on piano, Karl Young on saxes and woodwinds, Paul Dresher on guitars, and Gene Reffkin on percussion – and there's also some live mixing taking place during the entire performance, creating more complications in the sound. Titles include "Without Warning", "On The Other Hand", "Leading A Double Life", "Machomusic", "God's A Man", "When Baby Gets Wet", and "Intervallic Expansion". CD

Third Man, Late 20s/Early 30s. New Copy 2CDs ... Out Of Stock
It's hard to imagine Greece in the 20th century being described as primeval, but there's definitely a timeless vibe to the music on this collection – all pulled from vintage 78rpm discs that are filled with earthy percussion, exotic reed lines, and some especially nice stringed instrumentation! Most numbers seem to be instrumental, and although the date range in the title is large, the bulk of the recordings here are from the late 20s and early 30s – prime material for the expansion of the 78 market into more regional territories – of the sort that have been documented on similar collections by the Honest Jons or Dust To Digital labels. This collection is an initial foray by the Third Man group, in collaboration with collector Christopher King – who provided all the discs used in the collection – and despite the age and the format, there's a strong sense of clarity throughout – possibly because most of the material was recorded in studios rather than in the field. The set comes with a nice set of notes, a cover illustration by Robert Crumb, and 28 tracks that include "Sousta Rethymniotiki" by G Canteris and G Gombakis, "Ousak Tsiftelli" by Athanasios Lavidas, "Selfos" by Demetrios Jalkias", "Golfo" (Anonymous), "Syrtos Politikos" by Kyr Keravnos, "Kritiki Sousta" by A Karavitas & G Marianos, "Tzarama" by Nikos Karakostas and M Lakkergis, "Platanos" by Athanasios Lavidas, "Mirologi-Epirotiko Makedoniko" by Elias Karathimos, and "Kotta Mou" by Antonios Sakelarou. We kinda want to hate the guy for such a hokey name like Tenderlonious – but this album's a surprisingly great little gem, and one that mixes lots of openly-blown work on flute with some sweet keyboards and other jazzy rhythms! The approach is maybe a bit like the Jason Lindh or Chris Hinze albums of the early 70s – and by that, we mean their better sets – with a flute approach that's less biting than the generation of Herbie Mann and Roland Kirk, using the instrument more in these spacious ways that are pretty darn great – especially against the heavy percussion and basslines of the 22Archestra! There's a few nice moments that almost have a Bobbi Humphrey sort of warmth – and titles include "Togo", "SV Interlude", "Expansions", "The Shakedown", "Yussef's Groove", "Red Sky At Night", and "You Decide".
