✨✧ Evan ParkerAll Knavery & Collusion ... LP
Cadillac (UK), 2021. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A quartet of improvising greats, coming together hear beautifully – with lots of sharp tenor work from Evan Parker, alongside the drums of Paul Lytton, bass of John Edwards, and piano of Alexander Hawkins! Parker is sometimes very deft, sometimes more in the textural territory of his more spacious improvisations – and at points, he's able to fold the two together beautifully – always seeming to direct the proceedings of the entire group, although it's clear that each player brings a fair bit of their own energy to bear in the proceedings. The bass of Edwards might be one of the most important elements – sometimes a bit more understated than the others, but in a way that really provides some glue for the whole thing – on titles that include "The Alchemy Of John Edwards", "A Well Staring At The Sky", "The Influence Of The Dog Star", "Art Is A Science", "A Blazing Star Or Comet Appeared", and "The Weather Set In Hot". Evan Parker & George LewisFrom Saxophone & Trombone ... LP
Incus/OTOroku (UK), 1980. New Copy (reissue)... $30.99 34.99
A genius pairing of these two legendary improvisers – two artists who really had an amazing sense of tone and timing on their instruments! By the time of the recording, Evan Parker had lept far ahead most of his improvising contemporaries on tenor and soprano sax – using the horns in ways that were very far from their roots, as he opens up all sorts of sonic possibilities – at a level that is also echoed by George Lewis, who'd already given the world some amazing moments on his solo trombone record, yet pushes even farther here! The set features five different improvisations, each numbered variations on the title – all great. LP, Vinyl record album

Evan Parker/Derek Bailey/Han BenninkTopography Of The Lungs ... LP
Incus/OTOroku (UK), 1970. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99 32.99
A landmark album in the British avant garde – the first set ever issued on Incus Records, and a monumental set of improvisations between Evan Parker on saxes, Hank Bennink on percussion, and Derek Bailey on guitar! The album followed from some great energy on the British scene of the previous few years – but went onto set the tone for countless other improvisations in years to come – especially in the way that Bailey's guitar is integrated into the sharper sounds of the saxes and drums. That blend may well be the record's strongest contribution to improvisation – but even without that historic status, it's still a hell of a set from some genius players at their height. Titles include "Dogmeat", "For Peter B & Peter K", "Fixed Elsewhere", and "Titan Moon". LP, Vinyl record album

Evan Parker/Paul LyttonCollective Calls (Urban) – Two Microphones ... LP
Incus/OTOroku (UK), 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $30.99 34.99
Groundbreaking improvisations from the British scene of the early 70s – a set that stands as a key demonstration of the tonal genius of Evan Parker on reeds, and one that also marks a seminal mix of percussion and electronics from the great Paul Lytton! Parker blows soprano and tenor saxes, sometimes in those cyclical modes that he can pull off effortlessly – which also seems to open the door to Lytton's electronic pulsations, and some of his percussive touches in a similar way – while both musicians also use other elements, including tape and home made instruments – touching the proceedings with some very cool and unexpected sounds! Titles include "Lytton Perdu", "Shaker", "Cat's Flux 2", "Peradam", "Voice Fragment", and "What's Left Of The Neo Left". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Globe Unity OrchestraHamburg 74 ... LP
FMP/Cien Fuegos (Austria), 1974. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of the most ambitious albums ever from the Globe Unity Orchestra – a set that not only features work from some of the key free jazz musicians you'd usually find on their records, but also the choir of the NDR Orchestra – who make all these amazing vocalizations next to the equally amazing sounds from the musicians! As with other outings, the group is led by pianist Alexander Von Schlippenbach – who's clearly outdone himself here, and who must have been completely worn out by the end of the performance – as he does a masterful effort directing the vocalists alongside a top-shelf lineup that includes Manfred Schoof and Kenny Wheeler on trumpets, Cunter Christmann and Paul Rutherford on trombones, Peter Brotzmann and Evan Parker on reeds, and Han Bennink and Paul Lovens on drums. The album features two extremely long tracks entitled "Hamburg 74" and "Kontraste Und Synthesen". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Natural Information SocietyDescension – Out Of Our Constrictions ... LP
Eremite, 2021. Near Mint- 2LP ... Out Of Stock
Beautiful music from a group that features familiar players from the world of improvised music, but coming together here in a very different way! Joshua Abrams leads the group, and he's playing guimbri instead of his usual bass – a lighter stringed instrument used with global currents that set a pace for a very organic sound throughout – quite rhythmic at times, but still opening up with plenty of freely improvised moments – from a group that includes key contributions from Lisa Alvarado on harmonium and effects, plus drums from Mikel Patrick Avery, bass clarinet from Jason Stein, and soprano sax from the legendary Evan Parker! The setting is quite an unusual one for Parker – even though the date was recorded at the Cafe Oto in London – and with a set like this, it's clear that the growing power of Abrams' music is starting to have a larger global impact. The set features one long track – "Descension – Out Of Our Constrictions" – spread over the double-length set. LP, Vinyl record album

Alexander Von SchlippenbachAnticlockwise ... LP
FMP/Trost (Austria), 1982. New Copy (reissue)... $32.99 36.99
A masterpiece from the second chapter of FMP – that moment when the label and the European free jazz scene seemed to ruminate with some more intimate, sometimes contemplative modes – which only seemed to further allow the players to express themselves in an even greater range of talents! That's definitely the case here, on the two side-long tracks on the record – work that's free, but also feels more organically grown out of the fertile mental soil of the quartet, rather than sprung up instantly – served up with great care by a lineup that features Schlippenbach on piano, Evan Parker on reeds, Alan Silva on bass, and Paul Lovens on drums. Each track is a side long, and live – and titles include "Ore" and "Anticlockwise". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Miles DavisBirth Of The Cool ... LP
Capitol, Late 40s/Early 50s. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Legendary early work from trumpeter Miles Davis – late 40s sessions for Capitol Records that are completely different than the bop material he was cutting with Charlie Parker and on his own! Instead, these sides have Miles working with a complex, more arranged style – built up with a young Gil Evans, in a mode that prefaces the later famous recordings the pair would make in the late 50s for Columbia. Here, the tracks are shorter, but beautifully blend bop ideas with fuller arrangements – and Davis blows alongside other key young modernists in a variety of larger groups – with work from Lee Konitz on alto, Gerry Mulligan on baritone sax, JJ Johnson and Kai Winding on trombones, Al Haig and John Lewis on piano, and Kenny Clarke and Max Roach on drums. Mulligan contributed plenty, too – his ideas on an overall sound definitely helped shape these sides – and the record's go on to legendary status – even though it's very different than most other Miles Davis from the time. Titles include "Godchild", "Jeru", "Move", "Venus De Milo", "Budo", and "Deception". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono turquoise label pressing with anvil stamp. Includes the Capitol High Fidelity inner sleeve. Cover has light aging, minimal wear, and a small sticker spot in back.)
