Ella FitzgeraldElla ... LP
Reprise, 1969. Very Good+ ... $9.99
Groovy Ella from the end of the 60s – the kind of record that marked a really nice change from her staid work for Verve in years past! The setting here is bouncy and mod – a great mixture of jazz, soul, and bits of late 60s Brit Easy – no surprise, given that the sessions were recorded in London, with arrangements from maestros John Cameron and Mike Vickers! And while a few Ella purists might complain about the record, we totally dig it – and find it to be very similar to her excellent MPS album from the same stretch – a whole new sound for a singer with the range to take on anything! Titles include "Get Ready", "Yellow Man", "I Wonder Why", "Savoy Truffle", "Open Your Window", "Knock On Wood", "Got To Get You Into My Life", and "The Hunter Gets Captured By The Game". ✨✧ Ella FitzgeraldElla In Berlin – Mack The Knife ... LP
Verve, Early 60s. Very Good- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Quite a popular live album from Ella – recorded in Berlin at the height of the cold war years – featuring a famous recording of "Mack The Knife" that almost blew away Bobby Darin's hit with the cut! The album's nicely free of some of the stodginess of some of Ella's Songbook albums from the same time – with light and jazzy backing by a group that includes Jim Hall, Paul Smith, Wilfred Middlebrooks, and Gus Johnson. Titles include "Mack The Knife", "How High The Moon", "Too Darn Hot", "Gone With The Wind", "Misty", and "Summertime". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono Verve Inc pressing with deep groove. Cover has light wear.)

✨✧ Ella FitzgeraldElla Sings Broadway ... LP
Verve, 1962. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Ella Fitzgerald sings Broadway – but in a way that makes the tunes completely her own! Marty Paich turns in some great jazzy arrangements for the set – and the tunes are far more swinging than the usual showtunes you might expect – stripped of all their stage-bound drama, and retooled by Paich as these tight little vehicles for Ella's amazing vocals! The album's arguably more expressive than even some of Fitzgerald's previous songbook sessions – even though most work comes from the same American stage mode – titles that include "Hernando's Hideaway", "I Could Have Danced All Night", "Whatever Lola Wants", "Guys and Dolls", "If I Were A Bell", "No Other Love", and "Steam Heat". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono MGM pressing with deep groove. Cover has a cutout hole.)

✨✧ Ella FitzgeraldHello Dolly! ... LP
Verve, 1964. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A definite shot at the pop market by Ella Fitzgerald – quite possibly recorded as a follow-up to the 60s success of former singing partner Louis Armstrong, who's referenced nicely in Ella's rendition of the title hit! The first 4 tracks on the set were done in the UK, under the leadership of arranger Johnny Spence – and the remaining 8 were done back on Ella's home turf, with familiar backings by Frank DeVol, and an overall sound that's a bit more lush than those on the British numbers. Includes a hit reading of "Can't Buy Me Love", plus "Hello Dolly", "The Sweetest Sounds", "My Man", "Volare", "The Thrill Is Gone", "How High The Moon", and "Lullaby Of The Leaves". LP, Vinyl record album
(MGM pressing. Cover has light wear.)

Ella Fitzgerald & Count BasiePerfect Match – Ella & Basie ... LP
Pablo, 1979. Very Good+ ... $5.99
We're not sure if the match is perfect, but it's still pretty darn nice – a live performance that has Ella Fitzgerald singing in front of the Count Basie Band – all recorded before a very enthusiastic audience at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1979! The set's a nice capper to one of Ella's biggest decades as a star – and she steps out here with a well-earned confidence that allows her to match the energy of the Basie group and take new inspiration from their fire. Titles include "Make Me Rainbows", "Round Midnight", "Basella", "You've Changed", "Fine & Mellow", "Some Other Spring", and "After You've Gone". LP, Vinyl record album
(Black vinyl pressing. Cover has light wear.)

Exact matches15

Ella Fitzgerald & Duke EllingtonElla & Duke At The Cote D'Azur ... LP
Verve, 1966. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $16.99
A superstar performance from the Antibes jazz festival at Cote D'Azur – one that features Ella Fitzgerald and Duke Ellington sharing the stage, in a concert that was also recorded for a film! Most numbers here feature the full Ellington orchestra backing Ella up – but a few other numbers feature just backings from a trio with Jimmy Jones on piano and Grady Tate on drums. Duke and Ella trade the spotlight nicely – and Fitzgerald only sings on about half of the set, numbers that include "Mack The Knife", "The More I See You", "Lullaby Of Birdland", "Jazz Samba", "How Long Has This Been Going On", and "Going Out Of My Head". Ellington's heard on other instrumental performances – some of which are a bit more upbeat and unbridled than usual – almost in a Basie mode. These tunes include "Trombonio Bustosolssimo", "Diminuendo In Blue & Blow By Blow", "The Old Circus Train Turn Around Blues", and "The Matador". LP, Vinyl record album
(70s stereo Polydor pressing.)
Also available Ella & Duke At The Cote D'Azur ... CD 4.99

Ella Fitzgerald & Joe PassFitzgerald & Pass – Again ... LP
Pablo, 1976. Near Mint- ... $11.99
Ella Fitzgerald and Joe Pass return to the studio just a few years after their initial meeting – once again to work in a stripped-down duet format that's completely sublime! The spare setting is one that Ella never got in the older days – and there's an intimacy here that almost makes it like we're hearing a new singer entirely – one who's not surging over bigger band arrangements, but laying back and singing in a mode that's almost more torchy than we could have ever expected. Pass' guitar is acoustic, and gentle – and titles include "All Too Soon", "One Note Samba", "Rain", "You Took Advantage Of Me", "That Old Feeling", "I've Got The World On A String", and "Nature Boy". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has a promo stamp, light edge wear.)

✨✧ Ella Fitzgerald & Louis ArmstrongPorgy & Bess (2LP version) ... LP
Verve, 1957. Very Good- 2LP Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
One of the hippest takes ever on the Porgy & Bess score – done in duet format by Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong, in a fuller spirit than their other albums for Verve! Like many late 50s albums of Gershwin's score, this one was issued in advance of the film with Sidney Poitier – but unlike most, this is less of a cash-in affair, and really takes Gershwin's music on its own – serving it up with that newly serious style that Verve was hitting with some artists, especially Ella, in the latter half of the 50s. Most tracks have relatively full backings – strings and jazz orchestrations – and the double-length set features 15 tracks that include "Buzzard Song", "I Got Plenty O Nuttin", "My Man's Gone Now", "I Wants To Stay Here", "Summertime", "It Ain't Necessarily So", "What You Want Wid Bess", "There's A Boat Dat's Leavin Soon For New York", "Oh Lawd I'm On My Way", and "A Woman Is A Sometime Thing". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono Verve Records Inc pressing with deep groove. Includes intact booklet. Cover has partial seam splitting, light edge wear, aging.)

Ella Fitzgerald/Tommy Flanagan TrioMontreux 77 ... LP
Pablo, 1977. Near Mint- ... $11.99
Ella Fitzgerald swings it nicely with the Tommy Flanagan Trio – a small group on the date for backup, but one who give this Montreux performance almost as much bounce as Ella's 70s live dates with a bigger ensemble! Tommy seems to have a bit more punch in his piano than usual, and Fitzgerald really makes great use of that quality – hanging her groove on his bold lines nicely, with support from Keter Betts on bass and Bobby Durham on drums. Titles include "Day By Day", "Billie's Bounce", "Too Close For Comfort", "Come Rain Or Come Shine", "One Note Samba", and "Ordinary Fool". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has light wear and aging, with a small name in marker at the top right corner.)

Sarah VaughanTime In My Life ... LP
Mainstream, 1971. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $6.99
Sarah Vaughn's looking pretty groovy on the cover of this album, and she's sounding pretty groovy too – thanks to some sweet 70s backings from Ernie Wilkins! The style isn't exactly funky, but it's got some fully soulful sounds, and some great electric moments too – modes that almost feel more like some of the best Kudu Records vocal sets from the time, instead of the usual Mainstream Records groove. Sarah really fits well in this sort of setting – stretching out into groovier territory than before with the same sense of change that Ella Fitzgerald or Marlena Shaw were bringing to their music at the time. Players include Jerome Richardson on saxes, Buddy Childers on trumpet, Benny Powell on trombone, Jimmy Cobb on percussion, and Earl Palmer on drums – and titles include "Inner City Blues", "Magical Connection", "Universal Prisoner", "Tomorrow City", "That's The Way I've Always Heard It", "Imagine", "On Thinking It Over", and "If Not For You". LP, Vinyl record album
(Tri-color label pressing, in a unipak cover, with light wear.)

Cootie Williams & Wini BrownAround Midnight With Cootie Williams & Wini Brown ... LP
Jaro, Late 50s. Very Good+ ... $11.99
A cool session from Cootie Williams – working here as a vocalist as much as a trumpeter, often in the company of female singer Wini Brown! The set has both singers working together on some hip duets, then stepping apart and working on their own for some tracks too – an approach that's a bit like the Louis Armstrong/Ella Fitzgerald recordings over at Verve, but handled here with a bit more swing overall! Arrangements are by Quincy Jones, who knows how to make the record move nicely – and who also keeps things away from any too-hokey territory – and titles include "Around Midnight", "Bewitched", "That Old Feeling", "Goin Around", "Lover", and "Gone Again". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono white label promo with deep groove. Cover has a partially split top seam, but is otherwise in nice shape.)
