✨✧ Ella FitzgeraldComplete 1950 to 1960 Piano Duets ... CD
Verve/Essential Jazz (Spain), 1950s. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A wonderful way to hear the genius of Ella Fitzgerald at its best – as the set features all tracks that just have the first lady of jazz singing alongside a piano – spare, open, and in a way that really lets you get all all the care and nuance that Ella can bring to a tune! Most of the recordings here are from the 50s – quite unusual for the time – and they're matched with one more set of duets that Ella Recorded for Pablo Records in the 70s, at a time when she was exploring more intimate modes in a really great way. There's a host of great surprises along the way – and the set begins with 8 tracks from the album Ella Sings Gershwin, with Ellis Larkins on piano – then moves to another Decca duet with Larkins on the album Songs In A Mellow Mood. The set follows with two spare numbers from the Songbook recordings for Verve – one with Oscar Peterson on piano, one with Paul Smith. Then, Smith returns on another set of 13 tracks taken from the rare Let No Man Write My Epitaph album for Verve – then adds in a spare duet with Tommy Flanagan from the 1964 A Juan Les Pins album – before ending with the full set list from the wonderful Ella & Oscar album from 1976 – 7 more duets with Oscar Peterson on piano. ✨✧ Ella FitzgeraldElla – The Lost Berlin Tapes ... CD
Verve, 1962. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Ella Fitzgerald recorded one of her most successful albums in Berlin – a smoking live set that gave the world her take on "Mack The Knife" – and this set marks a fantastic second chapter to that record – unreleased tapes that appear here for the first time ever! The concert's from a different year than the previous record, but done in a very similar mode – Ella in front of a very enthusiastic concert crowd, running through upbeat, swinging takes on a variety of classics – all at a moment when both her vocal skills and onstage personality were at an all-time high! The group is just a trio – Paul Smith on piano, Wilfred Middlebrooks on bass, and Stan Levey on drums – but they swing things as hard as an orchestra, and merge with the vocals in a really wonderful way. Titles include a great version of "My Kind Of Boy" – with Ella switching around a lot of the lyrics – plus "C'Est Magnifique", "Good Morning Heartache", "Hallelujah I Love Him So", "Summertime", "Mr Paganini", "Mack The Knife", "Angel Eyes", "Cheek To Cheek", "Clap Hands Here Comes Charlie", "Taking A Chance On Me", and "Jersey Bounce". Ella FitzgeraldNewport Jazz Festival – Live At Carnegie Hall ... CD
Columbia, 1973. Used 2CD ... $9.99
A great set from Ella Fitzgerald – recorded at Carnegie Hall during a stretch when Fitzgerald was hitting new worldwide fame, and singing a lot of groovy contemporary tunes – but done here in a very old school style that hearkens back to Ella's earliest days in the jazz world! The orchestra here is that of Chick Webb, directed by Eddie Barefield – who brings a vintage swing to the music that's mighty nice, and free from some of the more modern modes of some of Fitzgerald's studio work of the time. The live setting allows for Ella to open up nicely on some tunes – especially some of the medley numbers, which may well be some of the most entertaining on the record. Ella sings with some backing from Ellis Larkins on piano on a few numbers – and a few other tracks are instrumental, with work by Tommy Flanagan on piano, Eddie Lockjaw Davis on tenor, and Al Grey on trombone. Titles include "Stardust", "Some Of These Days", "I've Gotta Be Me", "C Jam Blues", "Smooth Sailing", "Indian Summer", and "Lemon Drop". CD

Side one features two versions of "Mack The Knife", and side two features two versions of "Summertime" – each running in parallel grooves! 12-inch, Vinyl record

Verve, Early 60s. Very Good- ... $4.99
They're not lying with the title on this one, as Ella's singing to backings from the great Bill Doggett – who cooks up some of the liveliest rhythms Ella ever received from Verve! The style is still similar to other Verve records of the time – with that magnificent Fitzgerald vocal style transforming familiar tunes and standards – but the groove is much more upbeat, and Ella swings it hard in a style that really takes us back to her earlier years. Ella FitzgeraldSunshine Of Your Love (180 gram pressing) ... LP
MPS/Edel (Germany), 1969. New Copy ... On July 9, 2021 (delayed)
Very cool, very groovy, and one of Ella Fitzgerald's hippest albums of the 60s! The set was recorded in San Francisco in the late 60s, but was issued by MPS in Germany as proof that the label always had an ear for bringing something different out of a mainstream artist. And although live, the album's got a romping, hard grooving style that's filled with plenty of soul – arranged surprisingly by Tommy Flanagan, with a bouncing, bottom-end groove that even gets a bit funky at times! The centerpiece of the album is Ella's funky cover of the title cut – Cream's big hit "Sunshine Of Your Love" – proof that even an old gal can get funky with the right material! Other tracks include "This Girl's In Love With You", "Watch What Happens", "House Is Not A Home", and "Hey Jude". LP, Vinyl record album

Verve, 1966. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $19.99
A superstar performance from the Antibes jazz festival at Cote D'Azur – one that features Ella Fitzgerald and Duke Ellington sharing the stage, in a concert that was also recorded for a film! Most numbers here feature the full Ellington orchestra backing Ella up – but a few other numbers feature just backings from a trio with Jimmy Jones on piano and Grady Tate on drums. Duke and Ella trade the spotlight nicely – and Fitzgerald only sings on about half of the set, numbers that include "Mack The Knife", "The More I See You", "Lullaby Of Birdland", "Jazz Samba", "How Long Has This Been Going On", and "Going Out Of My Head". Ellington's heard on other instrumental performances – some of which are a bit more upbeat and unbridled than usual – almost in a Basie mode. These tunes include "Trombonio Bustosolssimo", "Diminuendo In Blue & Blow By Blow", "The Old Circus Train Turn Around Blues", and "The Matador". LP, Vinyl record album

Ella Fitzgerald, recorded in a nice lean setting – with mostly just the piano of Oscar Peterson to back her up, plus a bit of extra bass from Ray Brown on a few of the album's tracks! We love Fitzgerald in this mode – which is quite a change from some of her more familiar 70s work, and really shows the singer in her best light possible – handling things right out front, with an inherent sense of swing that's completely sublime! Peterson is great here too – playing with some of those more ragged edges that you'll get on his spare sessions for Pablo – some nice bluesy undercurrents that really help shape the sound of the record. Titles include "Mean To Me", "April In Paris", "Street Of Dreams", "I Hear Music", "More Than You Know", and "Midnight Sun". CD

✨✧ Ella Fitzgerald with The Roy Eldridge SextetLive In Stockholm 1957 ... CD
Verve/In Crowd (Spain), 1957. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A really great document of the live power of the Verve enterprise at its best – heard here in an extended concert performance from Stockholm in 1957, featuring Roy Eldridge and Stuff Smith with the Oscar Peterson Trio – plus a full second set of vocal tracks by Ella Fitzgerald! Eldridge himself sings a bit on the first half of the set – in that warmly raspy way that's always a great companion to his work on trumpet – and Smith gets center stage on a few of the instrumentals, really going to town in a way that doesn't always happen on record. Ella herself is a bit more unfettered than usual too, singing in a mode that recalls her classic performance on the Live In Berlin record – egged on by a very appreciative audience here! Norman Granz introduces various segments of the performance, and Eldridge/Smith numbers include "School Days", "Lester Leaps In", "Bugle Call Rag", and "Undecided" – and Fitzgerald numbers include "Love For Sale", "It Don't Mean A Thing", "Lullaby Of Broadway", "Tenderly", and "April In Paris". Verve/Universal, 1958. Used ... Out Of Stock
A nice one from Ella – and a good move past the Songbooks mode that sometimes dogged her years on Verve a bit too much! This set has Ella singing to light arrangements by Frank DeVol – nothing fancy, but a good set of tunes that are perfect for the lovely style that Ella was hitting back in the 50s. Tracks are short, uncomplicated, and very nicely swinging – even in the gentler moments – with titles that include "Let's Fall In Love", "Sweet & Lovely", "Moonlight Serenade", "I Remember You", and "East Of The Sun". Oscar Peterson & Ella FitzgeraldSwiss Radio Days Vol 15 – JATP Lausanne 1953 ... CD
TCB (Switzerland), 1953. Used ... $6.99
Vintage vocal work from the great Ella Fitzgerald – recorded at a time when she was really hitting her prime in the new Verve Records jazz generation – set up here by an all-star JATP group of players from that legendary label! Oscar Peterson's the main player pictured on the cover, but the set's also swung strongly with work from Barney Kessel on guitar, Ray Brown on bass, and drums from JC Heard – and on one of the album's tracks, the combo gets help from Lester Young on tenor and Charlie Shavers on trumpet. Tracks are nicely tight, and Ella is in very fantastic dynamic formation – with that kind of energy that often made her live sets so different than her studio recordings of the period – on titles that include "Lady Be Good", "Someone To Watch Over Me", "The Continental", "My Heart Stood Still", "The Man I Love", "Oscar's Tune", "A Tisket A Tasket", and "You Belong To Me". A big set of work from the lovely Blossom Dearie – one of the most unique singers in jazz, and a great pianist too! Blossom first rose to fame on the scene in Paris, but quickly returned home to the US – where she cut some beautiful albums for Verve in the 50s – sprightly vocal sides that were very different than some of the torchy modes of the previous generation, and even different than other 50s work by singers like Ella Fitzgerald or Sarah Vaughan! The charms of Blossom are impossible to describe in words, but they'll grab you right away upon first listen – and you'll get plenty of listening here – as the 3CD set begins with material from her Paris years, including the album Miss Blossom Dearie Et Sa Musique Jazz Sweet, the EP Blossom Dearie Piano, and then moves onto verve albums that include Blossom Dearie, Give Him The Ooh La La, Once Upon A Summertime, My Gentleman Friend, and Sings Comden & Green. 71 tracks in all – with notes in French and English! One of the greatest writers on singers presents his essential collection of albums from the 20th century – all served up with the kind of loving detail that's always made the prose of Will Friedwald so great! This time, Friedwald expands that later genre – and offers up full chapters that go in depth to some key vocal jazz classics – including Something Cool by June Christy, My Gentleman Friend by Blossom Dearie, Ella In Berlin by Ella Fitzgerald, John Coltrane & Johnny Hartman, Rain Or Shine by Dick Haymes, Lady In Satin by Billie Holiday, Black Coffee by Peggy Lee, and even Belly Of The Sun by Cassandra Wilson! ✨✧ Rita Reys5 Original Albums (Meets Oliver Nelson/Rita A Go Go/Today/Relax With Rita & Pim/Sings Antonio Carlos Jobim) (5CD set) ... CD
Philips/Universal (Germany), Mid 60s. New Copy 5CD ... Out Of Stock
A wonderful tribute to this European singer – the lovely Rita Reys, served up here in a package that features five of her best albums, all in little LP-styled sleeves! First up is a record on which Rita Reys meets Oliver Nelson – and a host of other great jazz talents, including Lee Konitz, Benny Bailey, Sahib Shihab, and Klaus Doldinger! The tracks on the set are all standards, but they're done in the tightly swinging style of Nelson's best backing work for vocalists at the time – complete with those warm tones and colors that always made his work some of our favorite in this mode. The mode is a bit different for Reys, who we normally know from more fragile settings – but it works especially well here, and almost seems to compensate for a faltering quality in her vocals at the time. Titles include "The Very Thought Of You", "Quiet Nights", "The Second Time Around", "If I Were A Bell", "Ill Wind", and "Wives & Lovers". Rita A Go Go is a wonderful live set – recorded with backings by a full orchestra led by Pim Jacobs, who bring a soulful punch to the proceedings that's really wonderful – and which helps Reys step out even more strongly than usual! Jacobs plays a bit of Hammond on the set, which is especially nice to hear next to Rita's vocals – and titles include "Call Me", "So Nice", "Sunny", "Day Tripper", "Goin Out Of My Head", and "Goodbye Sadness". Today is an incredibly groovy record from Dutch singer Rita Reys – quite possibly her grooviest ever, thanks to some very hip London touches from the Scott Walker team of Peter Knight on arrangements and Johnny Franz on production! At the end of the 60s, London was definitely one of the hippest places for a vocalist to work – a place where singers like Elis Regina, Blossom Dearie, and Ella Fitzgerald all opened up their talents tremendously. Rita does the same here – working with instrumentation that's full, flowing, and perfectly pitched to handle both the upbeat moments on the record, and the more contemplative ones – cast out over a well-chosen batch of tunes that go way beyond the standards! Titles include "The Moment Of Truth", "Soon It's Gonna Rain", "Our Language Of Love", "Sing A Rainbow", "You'd Better Love Me", "More Than You Know", and "Come Back To Me". Relax With Rita & Pim is a collection of work recorded by Dutch singer Rita Reys – all done with very jazzy backing by the Pim Jacobs Combo, a group that Rita often sang with at the time! The tunes on the set have some very groovy 60s touches – light bossa rhythms, sweet 60s approaches to rhythm, and a syncopated swing that makes the record groove a bit more than some of her other work from the time. In fact, the feel of the set's so nicely swinging, that the "relax" in the title is a bit misplaced – as out of all of Rita's records, this is the one that makes us want to get up out of the chair! Titles "Summertime", "Waltz For Debby", "Can't Buy Me Love", "Desafinado", "Bluesette", "The Boy From Ipanema", "Shadow Of Your Smile", and "Fly Me To The Moon". The last album is Rita Reys Sings Antonio Carlos Jobim – a set that shows that move into moodier modes that the vocalist took in later years – with a style that works beautifully here for the bossa compositions! Backings are by Rogier Van Otterloo, but the set also features a core combo with frequent collaborator, pianist Pim Jacobs – and the blend of piano, strings, and vocals has all the right lofty currents for these classic tunes by Jobim, with almost a mature Claus Ogerman vibe to the whole record. Titles include "Dindi", "How Insensitive", "This Happy Madness", "Triste, "Song Of The Sabia", and "Once Again". CD

A cool session from Cootie Williams – working here as a vocalist as much as a trumpeter, often in the company of female singer Wini Brown! The set has both singers working together on some hip duets, then stepping apart and working on their own for some tracks too – an approach that's a bit like the Louis Armstrong/Ella Fitzgerald recordings over at Verve, but handled here with a bit more swing overall! Arrangements are by Quincy Jones, who knows how to make the record move nicely – and who also keeps things away from any too-hokey territory – and titles include "Around Midnight", "Bewitched", "That Old Feeling", "Goin Around", "Lover", and "Gone Again". Ace (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $12.99 18.99
Think The Beatles only had an impact on rock and pop fans in the America of the 60s? Think again – because their music had an undeniable impact on soul as well – as you'll here from this wonderful range of remakes of classic cuts from the Fab Four! The work here is a real surprise if you don't know the legacy – but it also really makes sense once you're reminded of the mind-expanding, ear-opening territory the group hit in the latter half of the 60s – and working with themes of social change, alienation, and personal longing – of the sort that turn out to be perfect for new interpretations in soul! Most of these cuts are way more than standard cover versions, too – as the arrangements are really inventive, and take off in bold new directions that make the songs very much new properties overall. Most of the work here is from the late 60s and early 70s – and as always with Ace Records, the notes and presentation really put the music in context! Titles include "The Fool On The Hill" by The Four Tops, "Dear Prudence" by The Five Stairsteps, "For No One" by Maceo & The King's Men, "She Came In Through The Bathroom Window" by Ike & Tina Turner, "Tomorrow Never Knows" by Junior Parker, "Got To Get You Into My Life" by Earth Wind & Fire, "Do You Want To Know A Secret" by Mary Wells, "Lovely Rita" by Fats Domino, "With A Little Help From My Friends" by The Undisputed Truth, "Savoy Truffle" by Ella Fitzgerald, and "Let It Be" by Bill Withers. A great look at a very important side of spiritual jazz in the 60s and 70s – the evolution of jazz vocals, to a point when singers like Abbey Lincoln, Andy Bey, or Leon Thomas brought a whole new sound and soul to the spectrum of jazz! This wonderful package covers lots of key moments from that time – and also unearths some great rare tracks, too – really showing the way that singers of this period moved far far past the styles of Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald in the generation before – often using their voices with the same unbridled power as the musicians in these groups, serving up some righteous lyrics and politics in the process! The collection might well be our favorite in this great series so far – and titles include "Imani" by EW Wainwright, "Tears For Johannesburg" by Max Roach, Colors" by Norman Riley, "African Violet" by Sadaka, "The Ladder" by The Singers & Musicians Of Washington High School, "Rain Forest" by Dr Haki R Mahubuti, "African Sunshine" by Eddie Gale, "Reunion (edit)" by Byron Morris & Unity, "Celestial Blues" by Gary Bartz Ntu Troop, "John Coltrane" by Clifford Jordan, and "Spirits Up Above" by Vibration Society.
