Clifford BrownNew Star On The Horizon ... LP
Blue Note, Early 50s. Sealed ... $16.99
Sublime early work from Clifford Brown – one of his few sessions recorded for Blue Note, presented here in the years before the material was issued as a "memorial" after his early death! Gigi Gryce is in the sextet here with Clifford, playing both alto and flute, and bringing a real modern edge to the session – a style that makes great use of Brown's tone, and is a direction we would have liked to hear more of had he not been taken from us so early. Other players include John Lewis on piano, Charlie Rouse on tenor, and Art Blakey on drums – and titles include "Wail Bait", "Minor Mood", "Hymn Of The Orient", and "Brownie Eyes"; plus an entire side of bonus tracks. Ornette ColemanSomething Else!!!! ... LP
Contemporary, 1958. Near Mint- ... $16.99
Pre-Atlantic work from Ornette Coleman – one of his first recorded statements in jazz – and one of his boldest! At some level, the complete Coleman sound isn't entirely in place here – as there's a bit of a trace of hardbop in the mix – not entirely, but just a bit. But at another level, the record's still way darn bolder than just about anything coming out of LA at the time – proof that amidst all the cool jazz ruminations of the 50s, there was a second wave of modernism about to explode! The group here features Don Cherry on trumpet, Walter Norris on piano, Don Payne on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums – and while the core harmelodic rhythmic approach isn't always in place, it's more than made up for by some surprisingly free energy. Titles include "Invisible", "The Blessing", "Alpha", and "The Sphinx". LP, Vinyl record album

Classic Miles Davis from that pivotal year of 1954 – featuring work from 2 different sessions, both of them great! The title track on the album is a key reading of "Bag's Groove", presented here in two versions, both recorded by a quintet that includes Milt "Bags" Jackson on vibes, Thelonious Monk on piano, Percy Heath on bass, and Kenny Clarke on drums – carving out the tune in a nicely modern idiom. The rest of the set features work by Miles in a quintet with Sonny Rollins and Horace Silver – again with support from Heath and Clarke – on tunes that include 2 versions of "But Not For Me", plus early recordings of Sonny Rollins' standards "Oleo", "Airegin", and "Doxy". Ray Draper with John ColtraneTuba Jazz ... LP
Jubilee, 1958. Very Good ... $39.99
Fantastic work – and one of the few albums ever cut as a leader by Ray Draper, a jazz tuba player, with an approach to the instrument that's a lot better than you might think! Draper plays the tuba like the best baritone saxophonists – using the lower registers of the instrument to groove around in tight step with the basslines, but always still managing to swing – a remarkable feat, given the heaviness of the instrument! Draper's talents were quite respected at the time – both by Jackie McLean, who used him on a record, and by John Coltrane, who makes a rare appearance here as a sideman on the set! The mixture of Coltrane's angularity and Draper's bassiness is sublime – and the album's filled with great tracks that have a fresh late 50s modernist hardbop approach. Titles include "Essii"s Dance", "Yesterdays", "Oleo", and "Doxy". LP, Vinyl record album

Dexter GordonMonmartre Collection Vol 1 ... LP
Black Lion (UK), 1967. Very Good+ ... $9.99
One of the first great European statements from tenorist Dexter Gordon – a 1967 live recording that really lets Dexter stretch out, and show an even deeper side of his talents than on his 60s albums for Blue Note! The rhythm section here is rock solid – Kenny Drew on piano, Neils Henning Orsted Pedersen on bass, and Albert Tootie Heath on drums – a unit that still retains the sharpness of the Blue Note dates, but also has the energy to "go long" as Gordon pushes a few of the numbers on the set well past the ten minute mark. Gordon's solos are wonderfully imaginative and expressive – and titles include "Devilette", "For All We Know", "Doxy", and "Sonnymoon For Two". LP, Vinyl record album

Sonny RollinsOur Man In Jazz (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Essential Jazz (Spain), 1963. Used ... $14.99
One of Sonny Rollins' best albums ever, and a totally inspired, totally non-stop freewheeling live set, recorded with Don Cherry, Bob Cranshaw, and Billy Higgins! Working on long tracks in an unfettered setting, Rollins' hits one of those rare moments of genius where he can turn his solo over and over again – never losing interest, and always opening up new territory – at a level that easily matches the oft-made claim that he's one of the greatest tenor talents ever on the tenor sax! The album features only 3 long tracks, all dominated by masterful work by Rollins – and titles include "Oleo", "Dearly Beloved", and "Doxy". CD also includes 3 bonus tracks – "There Will Never Be Another You", "You Are My Lucky Star", and "I Could Write A Book", and alternate versions of "Oleo", "Dearly Beloved", and "Doxy". CD

Prestige, 1955. New Copy ... $4.99 11.98
If worktime was like this for us, you'd catch us showing up on the job early every day – but sadly, nothing at our office can match the brilliance of early Sonny Rollins here – a sharp-edged genius that perfectly illustrates why he was one of the greatest players on his horn for many decades running! There's a depth of tone on the record that rivals Coleman Hawkins or Lester Young – but a quickness of pace and imagination that shows a clear influence from Charlie Parker, and a deftness that few were bringing to the tenor at the time. The rhythm section here is super tight – and features Ray Bryant on piano, George Morrow on bass, and Max Roach on drums – all supporting Rollins' bold lead with lines that bristle with electricity, but still often fall back to let the sound of the tenor envelop the whole group. Tracks are longish, and titles include "Raincheck", "There Are Such Things", "Paradox", and "It's All Right With Me". CD

Joel RossParable Of The Poet ... CD
Blue Note, 2022. Used ... $9.99
The "poet" in the title is very well-put here – as vibist Joel Ross continues to mature into one of the most distinctive artists in contemporary jazz – not just a unique player on his chosen instrument of the vibes, but also a leader who can take a session like this and really make something different and distinct! Ross' vibes are certainly part of the album's appeal – but the whole thing is more of a larger vision in jazz – equally well-shaped by the contributions of Immanuel Wilkins on alto, Marquis Hill on trumpet, Maria Grand on tenor, and Kalia Vandever on trombone – horn players who don't push the album to large ensemble status, but who have this way of coloring in the sophisticated sentiments that Ross brings to his music – maybe much in the way that some of the key Bill Lee soundtracks can take other jazz players and use them to illuminate his ideas in really wonderful ways. The set also features Sean Mason on piano – an artist who's as careful in tone as Ross – plus Rick Rosato on bass, Craig Weinrib on drums, and guest flute on one track from Gabrielle Garo. Titles include "Guilt", "Choices", "The Impetus", "Doxology", "Benediction", and "Prayer" CD

McCoy Tyner4 X 4 – McCoy Tyner Quartets ... LP
Milestone, 1980. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $24.99
McCoy Tyner's a hell of a piano player on his own, but in the post-Coltrane years he also developed an amazing talent for picking sidemen too – as you'll hear in this very unique set! The record features four different quartets – hence the title – each of which features a core trio of Tyner on piano, Cecil McBee on bass, and Al Foster on drums – with the inclusion of Bobby Hutcherson on vibes, Arthur Blythe on alto, Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, and John Abercrombie on electric mandolin! Each of the four groups is featured on a different side of the 2LP set – which allows things to get broken up nice and easily – almost like getting four great Tyner albums in one, each with a different style. Most tunes have that soaring, righteous quality that McCoy did so well during his 70s years – usually with larger groups – and titles include "Blues In The Minor", "The Seeker", "Forbidden Land", "Backward Glance", "Paradox", "Inner Glimpse", and "I Wanna Stand Over There". Omni (Australia), Late 40s/1950s. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Bawdy beer joint stompers, raucous and rumbling proto rock rhythms and perfectly produced numbers from the hillbilly branch of Columbia Records in the 50s! These tales of hard livin' (and drinkin'), heart breakin' and train hoppin' by forgotten hillbilly combos and crooners – plus a handful of legends treasured to this day – will sound terrific until the end of time, thanks to the first wave freshness of the era's vintage – as well as the impeccable recording quality Columbia could provide. Great stuff from Rocky Porter, Rose Maddox (and The Maddox Brothers), Ray Price, Little Jimmy Dickins, "Freddie Hart, Jack Rhodes & His Lone Star Buddies, Bobby Lord and more. A whoppin' 32 tracks in all: "The World Is A Monster" by Rocky Porter, "All I Can Do Is Cry" by Johnny Bond, "No Parking Here" by Jimmy Littleton, "Buddy's Boogie" by The Country Boys, "When The Sun Goes Down" by Rose Maddox, "Red Hot Mama And An Ice Cold Beer" by Smiley Maxedon, "Me And My Big Loud Mouth" by Little Jimmy Dickens, "Much Too Young To Die" by Ray Price and many more. ✨✧ AppaloosaAppaloosa ... LP
Columbia, 1969. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A beautiful musical discovery that we'd somehow never managed to hear all these years – the debut of (and possibly only album by) Appaloosa, a group who mix together gentle folk and a bit of strings – in a mode that's strongly resonant with some of Tim Hardin or Tim Buckley's best work of the late 60s! As you can guess from the cover image, the group is pretty young – but they work with a timeless quality beyond their years, a mode that mixes guitar, violin, and cello together as the core instrumentation for the tunes – topped by wonderful vocals from singer Robin Batteau, who has one of those "shoulda been huge" voices that really grab you right away. Al Kooper produced and contributed some instrumentation – but in a really subtle way that respects the band's sound strongly – and titles include "Pascal's Paradox", "Now That I Want You", "Georgia Street", "Rosalie", "Rivers Run To The Sea", "Glossolalia", and "Feathers". Doxy, 1958. Near Mint- 2LP ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An excellent double-length album that brings together a full session of material by John Coltrane – titles that were initially scattered over a number of different albums, but finally brought back together for this package! The album features Coltrane blowing in a quintet with trumpeter Wilbur Harden – making the set a nice counterpart to the Harden/Coltrane work at Savoy – but done here in a style that's more fully spacious, in keeping with Trane's Prestige work as a leader. Rhythm is by the trio of Red Garland on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Jimmy Cobb on drums – and tracks were originally issued on the albums Stardust, Standard Coltrane, and Bahia. 8 titles in all – including "I'll Get By", "Don't Take Your Love From Me", "Stardust", "Invitation", "Love Thy Neighbor", and "My Ideal". A record that hardly seems like workin at all, given the ease with which the group lays down the music – especially trumpeter Miles Davis, whose work here is like magic – and tenorist John Coltrane, who was really coming into his own with this recording! The set's one of a handful from this famous pair, and features superb rhythm accompaniment from Red Garland on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums – a standard-setting group who know how to come in when needed, then lay back and let Miles and Trane run in their own directions The album's got well-deserved classic status in modern jazz – and titles include two takes on the group's famous "The Theme", plus "It Never Entered My Mind", "Four", "In Your Own Sweet Way", "Trane's Blues", "Ahmad's Blues", and "Half Nelson". Seminal early work from Elmo Hope that was part of Blue Note's "New Faces – New Sounds" series during the early 50s. As always, Hope proves himself to be one of the greatest pianists in jazz history – right up there with Monk, Herbie Nichols, and Bud Powell, bristling with excitement that few of his contemporaries (save those three) could match! Righteous (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A collection of classic country that's got way more to offer than the "depressing" in the title might make you think – not tracks that are purposely over the top and full of bad feeling – but instead the kind of well-crafted work that makes postwar country some of the most carefully emotive music of the time! The set's overflowing with themes of love and loss, but handled with a mature, honest, very human approach – never wallowing too much in depression, and instead often coming across with a slightly redemptive spirit in the realization of the loss. The set features 30 tracks in all – and titles include "Letter Edged In Black" by Hank Snow, "Teardrops & Empty Arms" by Texas Ruby, "A Church A Courtroom & Then Goodbye" by Patsy Cline, "Lonely Street" by Don Gibson, "Call Of The Wedding" by Goldie Hill, "There'll Be No Teardrops Tonight by George Jones, "Tramp On The Street" by Carlisle Brothers, "The Old Crossroad Is Waitin" by Rose Maddox, "Lonely Side Of Town" by Kitty Wells, "Are You Afraid To Die" by Stanley Brothers, and "I'm Reading Yaur Letter Again" by Wilma Lee & Stoney Cooper. ✨✧ Sonny RollinsWhat's New/Our Man In Jazz ... LP
RCA (France), 1962/1963. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Nice two-fer that combines 2 great sides from Rollins' RCA years. What's New is a unique album from Sonny Rollins – one that features him blowing tenor over some Latin-based rhythms that have a tight uptempo feel. The core group on the album features Jim Hall on guitar, Bob Cranshaw on bass, and Ben Riley on drums – but they're augmented by larger arrangements that mix together bossa nova and calypso rhythms, which forge a surprisingly great background for Rollins' gutsy tenor. Although it's easy to dismiss the record as a throwaway cash-in affair on the Latin boom of the early 60s – Rollins actually handles himself wonderfully, and the longer-than-usual tracks on the album show a whole new side of his talents that were later reprised on Latin sessions during the 70s. Titles include "Bluesongo", "Jungoso", "The Night Has A Thousand Eyes", and "Brownskin Girl". Our Man In Jazz is one of Sonny Rollins' best albums ever, and a totally inspired, totally non-stop freewheeling live set, recorded with Don Cherry, Bob Cranshaw, and Billy Higgins. Rollins' hits one of those rare moments of genius where he can turn his solo over and over again, never losing interest, and always opening up new territory. Thankfully, the three tracks on the album are long enough to let him get enough creative action in. Titles include "Oleo", "Dearly Beloved", and "Doxy". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ McCoy TynerSama Layuca ... CD
Milestone/Universe/Comet (Italy), 1974. Used ... Out Of Stock
Quite hip stuff from McTyner – really righteous sounds from his 70s run for Milestone Records, recorded with a great lineup that includes Bobby Hutcherson on vibes, Gary Bartz on alto, Azar Lawrence on soprano and tenor sax, Bulster Williams on bass, Billy Hart on drums, and Mtume on percussion! With players like that, it would be hard to miss – but McCoy's also not one to just let the cats do their own thing – as he directs the group with a sense of power and majesty that's really wonderful. Tyner spins out long dramatic lines in a post-Coltrane Impulse mode that's almost more like Alice Coltrane than his usual bag – and the horn solos of Bartz and Lawrence really give the set a crackling edge. Ttiles include "Paradox", "Desert Cry", "La Cubana", and "Sama Layuca". CD

The crashing waves of the Pacific coast hardly seem like the serene setting you might want for the vibes of Cal Tjader – but this album works surprisingly well, and offers up Cal's combo in a Monterey live date, before the jazz festival really got going strong! The group's one that matches his best early albums for Fantasy – piano from Lonnie Hewitt, soulful bass from Al McKibbon, and some great Latin percussion from Mongo Santamaria and Willie Bobo! Paul Horn also joins the group on flute – blowing with lyrical lines that fit the sound wonderfully, adding a whole new dimension to the music. Many tracks are longer than usual for the Fantasy years – and titles include "Walkin With Wally", "Doxy", "Round Midnight", "Tumbao", "Love Me Or Leave Me", "SS Groove", "Tu Crees Que", and "Afro Blue".
