✨✧ ClipseHell Hath No Fury ... CD
Re-Up Gang/Star Trak/Zomba, 2006. Used ... Out Of Stock
The long-gestated follow up to the breakout Lord Willin' record by Clipse – announced in fall 2003 – finally released in late 2006! Hell Hath No Fury may have been on ice for 3 years, but it appeared as an instant classic, WAY up at the top of the list of greatest hip hop LPs of the mid 00s. The Neptunes beats are very spare and chilly, despite the fiery title – while the Pusha T & Malice style of precise storytelling and detached deliveries probably make them the most natural duo in the game. A gritty rap masterpiece. Tracks include "We Got It For Cheap", "Momma I'm So Sorry", the masterful "Mr Me Too" feat Pharrell, "Wamp Wamp (What It Do)" feat Slim Thug, "Dirty Money", "Ride Around Shining" feat the Re-Up Gang, "Key's Open Doors", "Chinese New Year" feat Rosco P Coldchain, "Nightmares" feat Pharrell & Bilal and more. Ornette ColemanBeauty Is A Rare Thing – Complete Atlantic recordings (6CD set) ... CD
Atlantic/Rhino, Early 60s. Used 6 CD + Book ... $49.99
We'll be honest with you – we love this stuff! Sure, Ornette made some great recordings for a number of other labels – but as a whole, his Atlantic stuff is some of the greatest modern jazz ever recorded, and no other period of an artist is more worth collecting and having in a complete format than this one! The package is unbelievably thorough – and includes not only all the tracks from classic albums like Change Of The Century, This Is Our Music, Free Jazz, Shape Of Jazz To Come, Ornette!, Ornette On Tenor, The Art Of The Improvisors and Twins – but also 6 previously unreleased tracks, and rare material like Ornette's Japanese-only LP To Whom Who Keeps A Record plus 2 selections from Gunther Schuller's Jazz Abstractions featuring Ornette! There's 6CDs in all – packaged in a great case with a well annotated booklet. Titles include "Proof Readers", "Revolving Doors", "Joy Of A Toy", "Cross Breeding", "Variants On A Theme Of Thelonious Monk", "Eos", "Focus On Sanity", "Una Muy Bonita", "Lomely Woman", "Little Symphony", "The Circle With The Hole In The Middle", "Beauty Is A Rare Thing", "Folk Tale", "The Face Of The Bass", "Brings Goodness", "Rise & Shine", and lots and lots more! CD
(Out of print. A great copy – super clean with almost no shelf wear, just a small peeled spot over the barcode and a lightly bumped corner.)

✨✧ Cornell DupreeShadow Dancing ... CD
Versatile/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1978. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Smooth and soulful guitar work from Cornell Dupree – a player who recorded on countless sessions as a studio sideman, but hardly ever got to work as a leader on his own! The album's got a full sound that's kind of a step beyond the Kudu/CTI sound of the time – an approach that takes larger orchestrations and uses them as the backdrop for Dupree's work on guitar, often with a fair bit of keyboard support from Mario Sprouse who arranged both albums on the set. The fullness resonates with the funky dancefloor style of David Matthews during the same stretch – a bit commercial at times, but still with plenty of nice instrumental touches. Includes "The Creeper", "Two Doors Down", "Peg", "On & On", "The Closer I Get To You" and "Hey Girl". CD

✨✧ Fela & Africa 70Yellow Fever/Na Poi (LP sleeve edition) ... CD
Knitting Factory, 1976. Used Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
About as classic as you can get for 70s Fela – 2 albums that are overflowing with righteous politics, heavy rhythms, and super-extended grooves! The CD features the complete tracks from the albums Yellow Fever and Na Poi – both recorded in 1976, but compiled here with a bonus alternate take of "Na Poi" from 1975! The 15 minute tune "Yellow Fever" is a brutal attack on miscegenation, backed by a funky groove that makes the whole thing fall into place with an amazing riffing sound – and the cuts "Na Poi" is one of the sexiest tunes that Fela ever cut – as you might guess from the image on the cover! The track begins with a cool spoken bit, about what man and woman get up to behind close doors – then moves into this pulsating keyboard part which is almost eerily spare, until the rest of Afrika 70 come into the mix and really funk things up! Drums are wonderfully skittish – kind of double-snapping, while the bassline dips nicely below – and the tune ebbs and flows in this really great way, almost with the shifting sensual intensity of the lovemaking couple on the cover! That title track takes up a side and a half of the record – and the rest of the set features the stunning funk of "You No Go Die Unless" – a tight track that begins with James Brown like energy, then opens up with rawer elements in the middle – including some great chanted lead vocals. Mexican Summer, 1970s. Near Mint- LP + 10" Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
LA psychedelia from the beginning of the 70s – kind of a stranger and heavier take on the kind of terrain staked out by The Doors – and with a singer named Jim, to boot! Singer Jim Beach rolls from a mysterious and brooding vocal style to a meaner growl – with a pair of guitarists bringing both searing and soaring leads with a moodier rhythmic undertow. The tunes are long and spacious with slow building heaviness in both the playing and in the mood. We're digging it! Titles include "San-Divided", "Come Out Of Her", "Eye Of The Hurricane", "Sons Come To Birth" and "This Bird (Sky High)". LP, Vinyl record album

Tamla/Motown, 1967. Used ... $14.99
Fantastic soul duets between Marvin & Tammi Terrell – a landmark pair in 60s soul music, and easily one of the best male/female duos in pop music ever! Marvin and Tammi have a way of singing together that makes you feel like they're speaking the tunes, not singing them – a personal, intimate quality that's almost as if we're sneaking in on them behind closed doors – and not hearing their voices cast out in front of full backing in the Motown studios. Even when the tunes are familiar, they're still bracingly emotive – Includes stone classics like "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" and "If I Could Build My World Around You", plus "Hold Me Oh My Darling", "Somethin Stupid", "You Got What It Takes", and "If This World Were Mine". A stunning live example of Ike's amazing baroque soul for Stax! Despite the schmaltz that you might expect from a live set recorded at Lake Tahoe, the album's a beautiful batch of long tracks with a very similar feel to Ike's other Stax work at the time – and it really gives you an excellent chance to hear how he could create these tiny little masterpieces even in a live setting, without any sort of studio trickery. Titles include "Do Your Thing", "Theme From The Men", "Look Of Love", "Theme From Shaft", "Ike's Rap V", "Windows Of The World", "Ain't No Sunshine", and "Type Thang". 2 LPs – in a cool die-cut cover! James Brandon LewisJesup Wagon ... CD
Tao Forms, 2021. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
Maybe the strongest creative statement to date from tenorist James Brandon Lewis – an album of work inspired by the legacy of George Washington Carver – served up here with a sense of depth that's certain to open even more doors for Lewis in years to come! There's a majesty to the music that's apparent in the very first notes, and which keeps on coming as each song unfurls – that search for truth talked about in Carver's writings, quested here with a quintet that includes William Parker on bass, Chad Taylor on drums, Kirk Knuffke on cornet, and Chris Hoffman on cello! The energy of Parker and Taylor is sublime – and makes for a setting that's different than other recent records we've heard from Knuffke, who also seems to draw new currents of sonic inspiration from the gentle but powerful use of the cello. The tenor has a raw, sharp edge throughout – a personality that would be striking, even without the beautiful setting of Lewis' original material – and titles include "Lowlands Of Sorrow", "Jesup Wagon", "Experiment Station", "Fallen Flowers", "Seer", and "Arachis". Stax, 1974. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Baaad bluesy work from Little Milton – one of his killers for Stax, and a record that's equally heavy on the soul tip too! There's a strong Memphis vibe going on here – thanks to arrangements from James Mitchell, and backings from the Memphis Horns – who really do a good job of filling in the sound, to take things past the straighter blues mode of Milton's guitar. The vocals are great – raspy, and almost southern soul more than blues – and titles include "You're No Good", "Woman Across The River", "Behind Closed Doors", "Worried Dreamer", and "Hard Luck Blues". Julie LondonYummy Yummy Yummy (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Liberty/Universal (Japan), 1969. New Copy ... $18.99 About October 15, 2021
A very unusual album for Julie London – one of her few recordings ever to break the more traditional jazz format, and go for a mod sort of swinging 60s sound! The set features London versions of hits by The Doors, Beatles, Monkees, and others – all given a gentle groove by Tommy Oliver, who brings in just enough jazz to make the music work for Julie. And given her great style of singing – still quite laidback and sultry – the tunes take on a really unique feel here – hardly covers at all, and more whole new conceptions of cuts that include "Light My Fire", "Like To Get To Know You", "Stoned Soul Picnic", "Sunday Mornin", "Mighty Quinn", "Without Him", "And I Love Him", and "Come To Me Slowly". One of the grooviest soundtracks ever penned by Italian maestro Riz Ortolani – done for a 1970 film in which Michel Piccoli finds his home invaded by a host of groovy students and hippies! The music is very much in line with what you'd expect from such a scene – lots of upbeat, fuzzy, trippy tunes that move from 60s mod into more psychedelic modes – while the kids party, make love, and butt heads with the middle aged man in the room! The whole thing is very groovy throughout – with a few nice love themes that are clearly for those moments when a loving couple disappears behind the doors of a bedroom – matched with plenty of others that keep the party going throughout. 20 tracks in all – served up in styles that include "psychedelic shake", "drugs", and "sensual mood". Buck Owens and his Buckaroos at the top of their game – one of the sharpest country music acts at the end of the 60s, and still as brilliant here as they were when they first burst on the scene! In fact, the quality of Buck's work is often so strong, it's easy to miss – maybe in part because he was a rising star on the TV screen – although here, he and the group are still impeccable in terms of presentation – and also songwriting too, as almost every cut on the record is an original from Buck – save two from Bakersfield contemporaries Merle Haggard and Tommy Collins! Titles include "Hello Happiness Goodbye Loneliness", "If I Had Three Wishes", "Sally Mary & Jerry", "How Long Will My Baby Be Gone", "Leave Me Something To Remember You Buy", "Swinging Doors", "Girl On Super Pie Lane", and "The Heartaches Have Just Started". ✨✧ Billy Paul360 Degrees Of Billy Paul/War Of The Gods (SACD multi-channel disc) ... CD
Philadelphia International/Vocalion (UK), 1972/1973. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Two ultra-hip albums from Billy Paul – back to back in a single set! First up is 360 Degrees Of Billy Paul – a record that features Billy Paul at the height of his powers – able to capture the ears of the crossover audience, yet still stay very strongly on message – all with this righteous power that maybe makes Billy one of the hippest mainstream soul stars of the 70s! Gamble & Huff are at the helm, and arrangements at Sigma Sound are by Lenny Pakula, Norman Harris, and Bobby Martin – but throughout the whole thing, it's Billy's delivery that really sends the record over the top – the new sense of maturity he brings to the huge hit "Me & Mrs Jones", the funky vibe of "Am I Black Enough For You", and the wealth of great work on tracks that include "I'm Gonna Make It This Time", "I'm Just A Prisoner", "Brown Baby", and "Let's Stay Together". A masterpiece of sophisticated soul that not only had Billy crossing over big, but which opened whole new doors in the market for black male singers! War Of The Gods is a stone treasure from one of the greatest soul singers of the 70s – and a set you'll regularly find in the coolest of record collections from back in the day! Billy Paul was always one of the hippest talents on Philly International – mixing together soul and jazz influences with a deeper sense of spirituality, and long experience as a sophisticated vocalist. This album's one of his most sublime efforts – kind of a quasi-spiritual record with a similar high-concept approach to some of Marvin Gaye's work from the same time – really righteous, in ways that the Philly label didn't always hit – and which really goes past even most of Billy's already hip previous efforts. Gamble and Huff produced and wrote most of the record – including the two long tracks that make up side one, "I See The Light" and "War Of The Gods", the latter of which starts out slow and moody, then breaks out into a club groove. Other titles include the more standard soul tune "The Whole Town's Talking", plus "Thanks For Saving My Life" and "Peace Holy Peace". CD

✨✧ Alex PudduGolden Age Of Danish Pornography Vol 3 ... CD
Schema (Italy), 2016. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A great third chapter in the Danish Pornography series by Alex Puddu – and, like the others, music that was recorded to accompany the re-release of some classic adult films from the 70s! As you'd guess from the title and project, the sound here is very retro overall – wicked funk that works very hard to hit all the right slinky and sleazy notes needed to accompany the images of grown-up fun on the screen – with plenty of electric touches on a range of different keyboards and guitar (and even a bit of electric sitar, too) – in grooves that have a nicely building vibe, but which never try too hard to overtake the visual energy of the moment. In other words (if we can extend this metaphor even further), Alex is great at the foreplay, keeps things going a long time, and really knows how to build to a musical climax – on titles that include "Lesbian Lovers", "The Swinger Generation", "Cowboys Do It Better", "Black Orgasm", "Seductive Star", "Africa Scream", "Exotic Love", "Behind Closed Doors", and "Sex Bar". Rudzinski is maybe a bit more inside that Komeda or Tomas Stanko, but has this really great edge in his tenor, and a way of coming up with songs that manage to swing, but open up new ideas too – most penned here by pianist Krzystof Sadowski, an artist we do know and love – and who really shines in the group here alongside the guitar of Janusz Sidorenko, bass of Janusz Rafalski, and drums of Wladyslaw Jagiello. Elliot's Smith's second solo album and his first for Kill Rock Stars, a landmark for the label and Elliot's legacy – unintentionally kicking the doors open for a loner folk, melancholy acoustic movement in an indie rock era known for earsplitting noise at the time. It's more willfully intimate than what we'd lump in with what was being sold as "low fi" at the time, with material that really only needs Elliot's yearning voice, words and acoustic guitar to give us all we need. LRC, 1978. Sealed ... $9.99
Reedman Joe Thomas is wrapped up here in some very warm grooves – a mix of electric jazz and clubby modes – all of which takes Thomas' usual sound right to the discos! Most cuts have a backup vocal group – with contributions from Gwen Guthrie and Jocelyn Brown – but these vocals soon step aside to make room for Joe's solos on both tenor and flute – every bit as soulful as before, maybe a bit like Stanley Turrentine or John Handy in such a setting! The album's also got some great keyboards from Pat Rebillot – and titles include "Plato's Retreat", "Mr Mumbles", "Get In The Wind", "Two Doors Down", and "Low Down". LP, Vinyl record album

VariousFuture Bubblers 4.0 ... LP
Brownswood (UK), 2020. New Copy ... $18.99 19.99
Gilles Peterson presents the future of music from his very well-regarded perspective – served up here on eight tracks from some real up-and-coming talents on the London underground – working in a blend of modes that's very much in the best Brownswood Records spirit! The tracks move between contemporary soul, hip hop, jazz, and funky modes – but as with most of the work in the great Bubblers series, they tend to open new doors in sound along the way – music that's not easy to define and categorize, and we mean that in the best way possible. Titles include "Scatty Brain Dump" by Kin Kai, "If I" by HMD, "My Darling Spaceship" by Quko, "Slow One" by Forest Law, "Slow" by Kiddus, "Slow Things Down" by Iman Houssein, "NHH" by An Alien Called Harmony, and "When The Horns Come In" by Lazy H. VariousLooking Back – SAR Records ... LP
SAR/Cairo, Early 60s. Near Mint- ... $49.99
A great look at the sounds of the legendary SAR Records label – an imprint formed by Sam Cooke as his solo star was rising – and home to a small but superb batch of recordings in the early 60s! SAR shut its doors shortly after Sam's untimely death, but during its short run it really captured some top-shelf talent – much of it with the sophisticated sensibilities that made Cooke's own music so wonderful, with some great gospel elements in the mix too – especially on the way the groups were recorded. Some artists here would go onto greater fame in later years, but sound really wonderful here at the start – and titles include "Somebody" by RH Harris, "Soothe Me" and "That's Where It's At" by The Simms Twins, "Rome" by Johnny Taylor, "Time Brings A Change" and "Stand By Me Father" by The Soul Stirrers, "Looking For A Love" by The Valentinos, and "Couldn't Hear Nobody Pray" by The Womack Brothers – plus "That's Heaven To Me" by Sam Cooke himself. VariousYou Need This – An Introduction To Black Saint & Soul Note Records 1975 to 1985 (3LP set) ... LP
Black Saint/BBE (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 3LP Gatefold ... $32.99 36.99
A tremendous look at one of the coolest jazz labels of all time – and one that has an especially strong focus on the more spiritual side of its music! The paired Black Saint and Soul Note labels came along from the Italian scene right at a time when so many other American companies were shutting their doors – former spiritual jazz powerhouses like Strata East, Impulse, and Black Jazz were moving beyond the music, or disappearing entirely – which made the role of Black Saint/Soul Note such a crucial one! The company came into the game at a time of boundless creativity in American jazz – and really captured a post-Coltrane generation that was brimming over with fire and new ideas, but just needed a place to find expression – which it did at the label, who recorded dozens of albums in the space of less than a decade, nearly all of which have gone onto become classics over the years. And while there's a side of the label that's much more free jazz and avant garde, the cuts here reflect a Black Saint/Soul Note that's just slightly inside – tunes that are still freewheeling, but also have a rhythmic core – and the kinds of open, soaring solos that were first inspired in the 60s generation of Coltrane and Shepp. The choice of cuts is great – similar to the others in the If Music series – and titles include "Mr Seven" by M'Booom, "Joycie Girl" by Don Pullen with Sam Rivers, "Il Giro Del Giorno In 80 Mondi" by Enrico Rava, "Oasis" by Hamiet Bluiett, "Confessin" by John Stubblefield, "Joobubie" by George Adams & Dannie Richmond, "Verde Que Eu Te Quero Ver" by Rava String Band, "Down Home In New York" by Archie Shepp, "BK" by Air, and "The Nagual Julian" by Billy Bang Sextet. ✨✧ VariousTime To Fly – Easy Listening From the KPM 1000 Series 1970 to 1976 ... CD
Vocalion (UK), Early 70s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Soaring grooves from the legendary KPM Sound Library – a set of tunes that sparkles with all the charm and glamour of early 70s air travel! The title and cover really fit the spirit of the music here – as most of the tracks are upbeat and sky-flying – the sorts of numbers that go way beyond the sleepier side of easy listening, and really show the way that Easy maestros of the 70s were picking up plenty of funky elements in their music! There's no hard funk tracks here – as you might find on other sound library sets – but there's definitely an undercurrent of groove, thanks to some well-chosen rhythms, strong use of electric bass, and an overall sense of flow in most of the orchestrations – a feel that reminds us a lot of some of the excellent Brigade Mondaine compilations from a few years back. The package really offers up a different look than usual at KPM – and the tunes are as classy as anything we might have loved years ago, on the legendary Sound Library collections. Titles include "Sun Lover", "The Great Outdoors", "Husky Birdsong", and "Towards The Sun" by Keith Mansfield; "Holiday People", "Soft Memories", "Gentle Breeze", "Summer Dreams", "Summer Season", and "Friendly Faces" by James Clarke; "Paradise Found" by Dick Doerschuk, "Silk Stream" by David Gold, "Busy Spectacle" and "Fun In The Sun" by Neil Richardson, "Sunseekers" by David Lindup, and "A Tender Touch" by Steve Gray.
