JOB OrquestraOpen The Doors To Your Heart ... LP
Govinda, 1978. Sealed ... $34.99
A legendary album of spacey funk – originally conceived as a tribute to the deity Krishna, but a record with a much longer life of its own – thanks to years of support from global crate diggers! There's a really spiritual approach to soul music throughout – a style that might start with Earth Wind & Fire at their best, then take off into even more righteous territory – with a fair bit of message in the music. Production is quite strong for such an indie effort – with keyboards and soaring strings alongside a mix of male and female lead vocals – spread out nicely to really give the record a strong sense of voice and purpose. Some of the best tracks cross into sublime modern soul territory, thanks to sweet jazzy instrumentation – and titles include "Yield To Him", "The Soul", "Govinda", "Don't Want That Illusion", and "Can't Find The Way". Night TrainsObstruct The Doors, Cause Delay & Be Dangerous ... CD
Acid Jazz/Hollywood, 1997. Used ... $3.99
Later work by the Night Trains – much more soul-oriented than some of their earlier sessions, with lead female vocals on most tracks, and a smooth grooving sound that's still steeped in 70s funk influences, but which also has some stronger modern touches that show the group really growing as they progress. There's some killer tunes on here in a mellow stepping mode, and tracks include "The Wave", "How've You Been", "Greed", "Sex Theme", "Busted", and "A Better Tomorrow". CD

✨✧ AKAHard Beat ... CD
Strawberry Rain, 1970s. Used Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The first ever compilation of Indonesian psychedelia from AKA is a great one – fuzzy prog and funk steeped jams that the group tore up throughout the 70s – as cool as any single artist global rock compilations we've seen in quite a while! The group formed in Surabaya, East Java and went on to record a slew of albums throughout the 70s, but never really busted out big in it's time. Now's a great time for the world to catch up! They sing in English, and the songs are really exciting, changing tempos as they roll along incredibly, with a sound built around drums, bass, keys and guitars. Lead singer and keyboard player shines pretty brightly, but each group member sings and kills it in their own realms. Amazing! Includes "Do What You Like", "Glenmore", "Reflection", "We've Gotta Work It Out". "Cruel Side", "Groovy", "Mr Bull Doc", "Shake Me", "Crazy Joe", "Open Doors", "Sky Rider" and the CD bonus track "AKA Untuk Mu". 15 in all. CD

✨✧ ClipseHell Hath No Fury ... LP
Jive/Get On Down, 2006. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The long-gestated follow up to the breakout Lord Willin' record by Clipse! Hell Hath No Fury may have been on ice for years, but it appeared as an instant classic, WAY up at the top of the list of greatest hip hop LPs of the mid 00s. The Neptunes beats are very spare and chilly, despite the fiery title – while the Pusha T & Malice style of precise storytelling and detached deliveries probably make them one of the most natural duos in the game. A gritty rap masterpiece. Tracks include "We Got It For Cheap", "Momma I'm So Sorry", the masterful "Mr Me Too" feat Pharrell, "Wamp Wamp (What It Do)" feat Slim Thug, "Dirty Money", "Ride Around Shining" feat the Re-Up Gang, "Key's Open Doors", "Chinese New Year" feat Rosco P Coldchain, "Nightmares" feat Pharrell & Bilal and more. We'll be honest with you – we love this stuff! Sure, Ornette made some great recordings for a number of other labels – but as a whole, his Atlantic recordings are some of the greatest modern jazz ever recorded, and no other period of an artist is more worth collecting and having in a complete format than this one! The package is unbelievably thorough – and includes not only all the tracks from classic albums like Change Of The Century, This Is Our Music, Free Jazz, Shape Of Jazz To Come, Ornette!, Ornette On Tenor, The Art Of The Improvisors and Twins – but also 6 previously unreleased tracks, and rare material like Ornette's Japanese-only LP To Whom Who Keeps A Record plus 2 selections from Gunther Schuller's Jazz Abstractions featuring Ornette! There's 6CDs in all – packaged in a great case with a well annotated booklet. Titles include "Proof Readers", "Revolving Doors", "Joy Of A Toy", "Cross Breeding", "Variants On A Theme Of Thelonious Monk", "Eos", "Focus On Sanity", "Una Muy Bonita", "Lomely Woman", "Little Symphony", "The Circle With The Hole In The Middle", "Beauty Is A Rare Thing", "Folk Tale", "The Face Of The Bass", "Brings Goodness", "Rise & Shine", and lots and lots more! Cornell DupreeShadow Dancing ... CD
Versatile/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1978. New Copy ... $14.99
Smooth and soulful guitar work from Cornell Dupree – a player who recorded on countless sessions as a studio sideman, but hardly ever got to work as a leader on his own! The album's got a full sound that's kind of a step beyond the Kudu/CTI sound of the time – an approach that takes larger orchestrations and uses them as the backdrop for Dupree's work on guitar, often with a fair bit of keyboard support from Mario Sprouse who arranged both albums on the set. The fullness resonates with the funky dancefloor style of David Matthews during the same stretch – a bit commercial at times, but still with plenty of nice instrumental touches. Includes "The Creeper", "Two Doors Down", "Peg", "On & On", "The Closer I Get To You" and "Hey Girl". CD

✨✧ Ken FowserRight On Time ... CD
Posi tone, 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
This might be the first time we've ever heard tenorist Ken Fower with a Hammond organ in the mix – and it makes for a great change that really opens up the colors in his horn! Ken's always had a strong sense of tone, and we love his acoustic records – but this time around, Brian Charette handles the Hammond with a very groovy vibe – one that takes Ken back into 60s soul jazz territory, yet without any copycat cliche modes at all – kind of a sweet blend of Fowser's strong sense of writing and rhythm, just given a nice kick by the organ, which also handles the basslines too. The rest of the group is great as well – with Joe Magnarelli on trumpet, Steve Davis on trombone, Ed Cherry on guitar, and Willie Jones III on some nicely snapping drums. Titles include "No Filter", "On My Way", "Stand Clear Of The Closing Doors", "Samba For Joe Bim", "Knights Of The Round", "Fowser Time", and "Don't Let Life Pass You By". CD

✨✧ Globe Unity Orchestra & GuestsPearls ... LP
FMP/Be! (Germany), 1977. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of the greatest albums ever from the Globe Unity Orchestra – and that's saying a heck of a lot, given the quality of the group's work in the 70s! The ensemble were key in helping to develop the concept of an improvising orchestra – not the older model of a group where the players might get some short solo space – but a setting of many musicians, all improvising together as they make their way through loose compositional ideas – really opening new doors in music along the way! The remarkable thing here is that the lineup is all heavy hitters, but they all find space to respect and encourage each other as they create on the spot – a large lineup that includes Enrico Rava, Manfred Schoof, and Kenny Wheeler on trumpets; Anthony Braxton, Peter Brotzmann, Ruiger Carl, Evan Parker, Michel Pilz, and Gerd Dudek on reeds; Albert Mangelsdorff, Paul Rutherford, and Gunter Christmann on trombones; Alexander Von Schlippenbach on piano; Peter Kowald and Buschi Niebergall on basses; and Paul Lovens on drums. Titles include the side-long "Every Single One Of Us Is A Pearl" – with more than enough space to allow individual musical expression, and really live up to its title – plus a version of Monk's "Ruby My Dear", with arrangements by Schlippenbach, and the tracks "Kunstmusik II" and "The Onliest The Loneliest". ✨✧ James Brandon LewisJesup Wagon ... CD
Tao Forms, 2021. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Maybe the strongest creative statement to date from tenorist James Brandon Lewis – an album of work inspired by the legacy of George Washington Carver – served up here with a sense of depth that's certain to open even more doors for Lewis in years to come! There's a majesty to the music that's apparent in the very first notes, and which keeps on coming as each song unfurls – that search for truth talked about in Carver's writings, quested here with a quintet that includes William Parker on bass, Chad Taylor on drums, Kirk Knuffke on cornet, and Chris Hoffman on cello! The energy of Parker and Taylor is sublime – and makes for a setting that's different than other recent records we've heard from Knuffke, who also seems to draw new currents of sonic inspiration from the gentle but powerful use of the cello. The tenor has a raw, sharp edge throughout – a personality that would be striking, even without the beautiful setting of Lewis' original material – and titles include "Lowlands Of Sorrow", "Jesup Wagon", "Experiment Station", "Fallen Flowers", "Seer", and "Arachis". One of the grooviest soundtracks ever penned by Italian maestro Riz Ortolani – done for a 1970 film in which Michel Piccoli finds his home invaded by a host of groovy students and hippies! The music is very much in line with what you'd expect from such a scene – lots of upbeat, fuzzy, trippy tunes that move from 60s mod into more psychedelic modes – while the kids party, make love, and butt heads with the middle aged man in the room! The whole thing is very groovy throughout – with a few nice love themes that are clearly for those moments when a loving couple disappears behind the doors of a bedroom – matched with plenty of others that keep the party going throughout. 20 tracks in all – served up in styles that include "psychedelic shake", "drugs", and "sensual mood". Two ultra-hip albums from Billy Paul – back to back in a single set! First up is 360 Degrees Of Billy Paul – a record that features Billy Paul at the height of his powers – able to capture the ears of the crossover audience, yet still stay very strongly on message – all with this righteous power that maybe makes Billy one of the hippest mainstream soul stars of the 70s! A masterpiece of sophisticated soul that not only had Billy crossing over big, but which opened whole new doors in the market for black male singers! War Of The Gods is a stone treasure from one of the greatest soul singers of the 70s – and a set you'll regularly find in the coolest of record collections from back in the day! Billy Paul was always one of the hippest talents on Philly International – mixing together soul and jazz influences with a deeper sense of spirituality, and long experience as a sophisticated vocalist. This album's one of his most sublime efforts – kind of a quasi-spiritual record with a similar high-concept approach to some of Marvin Gaye's work from the same time – really righteous, in ways that the Philly label didn't always hit – and which really goes past even most of Billy's already hip previous efforts. Gamble and Huff produced and wrote most of the record – including the two long tracks that make up side one, "I See The Light" and "War Of The Gods", the latter of which starts out slow and moody, then breaks out into a club groove. Other titles include the more standard soul tune "The Whole Town's Talking", plus "Thanks For Saving My Life" and "Peace Holy Peace". CD

✨✧ PortisheadThird ... CD
Mercury, 2008. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A decade since their previous effort, and 14 years since their previous masterpiece, Portishead returns with Third – and, oh, what a mindblowing third act. The first thing you'll realize about Third is that it's not Dummy Part 3 – a welcome and surprising trait – but it does take their earlier way with a spooky, brooding and ominous framework to new dimensions. Secondly, there's no obvious single – it's to be taken as a whole. Beth Gibbons's vocals are as soul wrenching as ever, and an overall stark, melancholic beauty connects Portishead '08 to the old stuff, but they go deeper. Some bits are quite minimalist, wringing emotion from a low strum, a distant chime, or a haunting bit of dissonance – other parts are more richly layered and even a bit jarring. Pulp cinematic aura, feedback textured psychedelia, haunting European pop, and traces of field recorded folk flavor the sound – they've dabbled in all of these elements before – but never with this particular feel. The sound of epiphany. How many acts in the pop realm create a whole new style with a classic album, and then pull off something nearly as great almost 15 years later, without ripping themselves off? Add Portishead to that small list. We'll call '08 early, this is the best pop album of the year. Titles include "Silence", "Hunter", "Nylon Smile", "The Rip", "We Carry On", "Deep Water", "Machine Gun", "Small", "Magic Doors", "Threads". CD

Alex PudduGolden Age Of Danish Pornography Vol 3 ... CD
Schema (Italy), 2016. New Copy Gatefold ... $18.99
A great third chapter in the Danish Pornography series by Alex Puddu – and, like the others, music that was recorded to accompany the re-release of some classic adult films from the 70s! As you'd guess from the title and project, the sound here is very retro overall – wicked funk that works very hard to hit all the right slinky and sleazy notes needed to accompany the images of grown-up fun on the screen – with plenty of electric touches on a range of different keyboards and guitar (and even a bit of electric sitar, too) – in grooves that have a nicely building vibe, but which never try too hard to overtake the visual energy of the moment. In other words (if we can extend this metaphor even further), Alex is great at the foreplay, keeps things going a long time, and really knows how to build to a musical climax – on titles that include "Lesbian Lovers", "The Swinger Generation", "Cowboys Do It Better", "Black Orgasm", "Seductive Star", "Africa Scream", "Exotic Love", "Behind Closed Doors", and "Sex Bar". Fantastic work from a saxophonist we're hearing here for the first time ever – Boguslaw Rudzinski, who recorded this set in 1963 – right at the same time Krzystof Komeda and his generation were opening up doors in modern jazz on the Polish scene! Rudzinski is maybe a bit more inside that Komeda or Tomas Stanko, but has this really great edge in his tenor, and a way of coming up with songs that manage to swing, but open up new ideas too – most penned here by pianist Krzystof Sadowski, an artist we do know and love – and who really shines in the group here alongside the guitar of Janusz Sidorenko, bass of Janusz Rafalski, and drums of Wladyslaw Jagiello. The material was recorded for a sound library, and never issued at the time – and Boguslaw plays a bit of clarinet, too – but with a modern Tony Scott sort of edge. Merle's own recordings of his songs have gone on to shape the sound of country music for decades – but right from the start, his music was grabbed up and interpreted by singers in a variety of different modes – sometimes as a way to make older artists sound hip, and more importantly as a way for younger acts to give ol' Hag the nod, and fortify their rootsy inclinations with a strong dose of straight country! This set does a great job of mixing up both sides of that coin, and throws in a few surprises along the way – finally giving Merle his due when it comes to the pen, on tracks that include "The Bottle Let Me Down" by Emmylou Harris, "I Must Be Somebody Else You've Known" by International Submarine Band, "Sing Me Back Home" by The Every Brothers, "Life In Prison" by The Byrds, "Kern River" by Dave Alvin, "Legend Of Bonnie & Clyde" by Tammy Wynette, "White Line Fever" by Flying Burrito Brothers, "Okie From Muskogee" by Roy Rogers, "Swinging Doors" by Jerry Lee Lewis, "Today I Started Loving You Again" by Wynn Stewart, "Rainbow Stew" by Country Joe McDonald, "Honky Tonk Night Time Man" by Lynyrd Skynyrd, "Just Because You Can't Be Mine" by Bettye Swann, and "Silver Wings" by The Knitters. ✨✧ VariousYou Need This – An Introduction To Black Saint & Soul Note Records 1975 to 1985 (3LP set) ... LP
Black Saint/BBE (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 3LP Gatefold ... $32.99 36.99
A tremendous look at one of the coolest jazz labels of all time – and one that has an especially strong focus on the more spiritual side of its music! The paired Black Saint and Soul Note labels came along from the Italian scene right at a time when so many other American companies were shutting their doors – former spiritual jazz powerhouses like Strata East, Impulse, and Black Jazz were moving beyond the music, or disappearing entirely – which made the role of Black Saint/Soul Note such a crucial one! The company came into the game at a time of boundless creativity in American jazz – and really captured a post-Coltrane generation that was brimming over with fire and new ideas, but just needed a place to find expression – which it did at the label, who recorded dozens of albums in the space of less than a decade, nearly all of which have gone onto become classics over the years. And while there's a side of the label that's much more free jazz and avant garde, the cuts here reflect a Black Saint/Soul Note that's just slightly inside – tunes that are still freewheeling, but also have a rhythmic core – and the kinds of open, soaring solos that were first inspired in the 60s generation of Coltrane and Shepp. The choice of cuts is great – similar to the others in the If Music series – and titles include "Mr Seven" by M'Booom, "Joycie Girl" by Don Pullen with Sam Rivers, "Il Giro Del Giorno In 80 Mondi" by Enrico Rava, "Oasis" by Hamiet Bluiett, "Confessin" by John Stubblefield, "Joobubie" by George Adams & Dannie Richmond, "Verde Que Eu Te Quero Ver" by Rava String Band, "Down Home In New York" by Archie Shepp, "BK" by Air, and "The Nagual Julian" by Billy Bang Sextet. ✨✧ Fumio ItabashiLife & Live – Watarase ... DVD
Ultra Vybe (Japan), 2011. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really unusual performance from Japanese pianist Fumio Itabashi – who returns here to Watarase, a site that inspired his most famous album in the 70s! Itabashi plays here outdoors – a really amazing setting for a grand piano – yet his work on the instrument is ever bit as bold and powerful as when it's captured in the closeness of the studio – although maybe taking off with even more inspiration from nature, which is always something that Fumio brings to his unique combination of lyrical lines and magical flow! The performance runs for approximately 63 minutes, and all other notes are in Japanese, or else we'd tell you more. DVD
(Part of the "Nippon Jazz Spirits 48" series! DVD is NTSC – All Region.)

✨✧ VariousTime To Fly – Easy Listening From the KPM 1000 Series 1970 to 1976 ... CD
Vocalion (UK), Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Soaring grooves from the legendary KPM Sound Library – a set of tunes that sparkles with all the charm and glamour of early 70s air travel! The title and cover really fit the spirit of the music here – as most of the tracks are upbeat and sky-flying – the sorts of numbers that go way beyond the sleepier side of easy listening, and really show the way that Easy maestros of the 70s were picking up plenty of funky elements in their music! There's no hard funk tracks here – as you might find on other sound library sets – but there's definitely an undercurrent of groove, thanks to some well-chosen rhythms, strong use of electric bass, and an overall sense of flow in most of the orchestrations – a feel that reminds us a lot of some of the excellent Brigade Mondaine compilations from a few years back. The package really offers up a different look than usual at KPM – and the tunes are as classy as anything we might have loved years ago, on the legendary Sound Library collections. Titles include "Sun Lover", "The Great Outdoors", "Husky Birdsong", and "Towards The Sun" by Keith Mansfield; "Holiday People", "Soft Memories", "Gentle Breeze", "Summer Dreams", "Summer Season", and "Friendly Faces" by James Clarke; "Paradise Found" by Dick Doerschuk, "Silk Stream" by David Gold, "Busy Spectacle" and "Fun In The Sun" by Neil Richardson, "Sunseekers" by David Lindup, and "A Tender Touch" by Steve Gray.
