One of the grooviest Eric Kloss albums from the Muse years – thanks to some great keyboards from Neal Creque! Creque's presence always makes any date sparkle – and here, he brings a bit of a funky sound to the record – sliding in nicely behind Kloss on the solos, but also pushing the overall groove of the set with his rhythms. The rest of the group includes Gene Taylor on Fender bass and Ron Krasinski on drums – and titles include "Love", "Doors", "Waves", "Quasar", "Sweatin It", and "Libra". LP, Vinyl record album

Louis ArmstrongAmbassador Satch ... LP
Columbia, 1955. Near Mint- ... $7.99
Ambassador Satch is a key statement of Armstrong's global power in the postwar years, a time when the State Department was using his talents to mend fences and open doors after WWII. The material is Armstrong at his best comeback stretch – and most of these recall the classic sound of his early years, without any of the pop inflections of other later recordings. Atomic ForestDisco Roar ... LP
Now Again, Mid 70s. New Copy (reissue)... $21.99 25.98
A really wild album from this Indian psych group of the 70s – a set that's a bit different than their better-known first and second albums, but which is pretty darn groovy overall! The set's definitely somewhere in the "disco" of the title – but not in a slick, commercial way – as the group are working mostly as a funky instrumental combo, with some weird keyboard touches and offbeat production that might be aimed at the dancefloor, but which would have sent folks running for the doors in an American club. Singers appear in a few spots, but the real appeal is the tight, fast, and super-funky instrumentation – honestly even funkier than on their previous albums, which really transforms any tune they try to touch. Titles include "Another Star", "2001", "Life is Anew", "Devil Woman", "I Wish", "Spectrum", and "Smackwater Jack". LP, Vinyl record album

Art Blakey & The Afro-Drum EnsembleAfrican Beat ... CD
Blue Note (Japan), 1962. New Copy ... $14.99
A completely righteous mix of jazz and African percussion – put together by drummer Art Blakey at a time when he was riding high with the Jazz Messengers, but also was willing to work on great experiments like this! The album's years ahead of its time – and arguably opens the door for countless spiritual jazz projects like this in the 70s, more proof that Blakey was a groundbreaking artist who was always opening doors for others! Blakey's own work on drums is joined by percussion from Montego Joe, Chief Bey, Garvin Masseux, James Ola, Folami, Robert Crowder, and Solomon Ilori – the last of whom would record his own record for Blue Note – and the rest of the group features Yusef Lateef on flute and tenor, Curtis Fuller on trombone, and the great Ahmed Abdul-Malik on bass – a great choice for the record, given that he was mixing together similar modes on his own records of the time. Titles include "Tobi Ilu", "Love, The Mystery Of", and "Obirin African". CD
(Part of the "Blue Note 80 – More 60 Works" series!)

✨✧ Eugene ChadbourneThere'll Be No Tears Tonight ... CD
Parachute/Corbett vs. Dempsey, 1980. New Copy Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the most compelling albums ever recorded by guitarist Eugene Chadbourne – a set billed as "free improvised country and western bebop" – and which features Chadbourne serving up these wild variations on tunes by Carl Perkins, Roger Miller, David Allen Coe, Bobby Bare, Merle Haggard, and other country music legends! The album's much more Eugene than Nashville – although Chadbourne does sing lyrics on all of the tunes, but in a way that's very offbeat and hardly unlike the originals at all – as is his guitar work, which is acoustic and all twisted and turned up in all the offbeat phrasings you might expect! Much of the record is Chadbourne on vocals and electric dobro – but the set also features some drums by David Licht, saxes from John Zorn, and cello from Tom Cora. Titles include "The Last Word In Lonesome Is Me", "I'm The Only Hell My Mama Ever Raised", "Georgia In A Jug", "Motel Time Again", "Dang Me", "Window Shopping", "Jealous Loving Heart", "Mr Record Man", and "Swingin Doors". Clear LightClear Light ... LP
Elektra, 1967. Near Mint- ... $34.99
One of the great lost psych albums on late 60s Elektra Records – a set that's maybe got enough power and majesty to stand next to contemporaneous label releases by Love and The Doors! Like both of those groups, Clear Light have a vision here that's completely their own – a sound that steps out immediately to let you know that they're not just another copycat combo from the garage underground, and instead have this vivid new message that demands to be heard – unabashedly forward in its conception, and with a surprisingly sinister edge – yet all without any sense of being too full of itself either! Production is by Paul Rothschild, and is as superb as his best Elektra work of the period – and titles include "Black Roses", "With All In Mind", "The Ballad Of Freddie & Larry", "Sand", and "Night Sounds Loud". GM/RPM (UK), 1970s/Early 80s. New Copy 3CD ... $16.99
The second and final chapter of work from England's Lesley Duncan – a really great singer/songwriter who opened the doors for many others, but often never fully got her due! The tracks here are after Lesley's bigger years on RCA, and especially CBS – three albums recorded for the GM Recordings label in the mid 70s, plus lots of later bonus tracks too – all showing Duncan still very much at the height of her powers, as a strong interpreter of her own lyrics in ways that are free of commercial modes, nor any of the easily, conventional styles that other female singers were using as the 70s moved on. Arrangements are nicely understated, and two of the three albums feature Chris Spedding on guitar – Peter Frampton is on the third – all strongly presented here with huge notes and photos, and 20 bonus tracks too, including live tracks from a 1974 concert. Titles include "My Soul", "Moon Bathing", "Rocking Chair", "Fine Friends", "Jumped Right In The River", "We'll Get By", "Watch The Tears", "Maybe It's Lost", "The Sky's On Fire", "Love Melts Away", "Walking In The Sea", "Falling Like A Leaf", "Sing Children Sing", "Rainbow Games", "Could've Been A Winner", "Another Light Goes Out", and "Masters Of War". Ken FowserRight On Time ... CD
Posi tone, 2019. New Copy ... $11.99 15.98
This might be the first time we've ever heard tenorist Ken Fower with a Hammond organ in the mix – and it makes for a great change that really opens up the colors in his horn! Ken's always had a strong sense of tone, and we love his acoustic records – but this time around, Brian Charette handles the Hammond with a very groovy vibe – one that takes Ken back into 60s soul jazz territory, yet without any copycat cliche modes at all – kind of a sweet blend of Fowser's strong sense of writing and rhythm, just given a nice kick by the organ, which also handles the basslines too. The rest of the group is great as well – with Joe Magnarelli on trumpet, Steve Davis on trombone, Ed Cherry on guitar, and Willie Jones III on some nicely snapping drums. Titles include "No Filter", "On My Way", "Stand Clear Of The Closing Doors", "Samba For Joe Bim", "Knights Of The Round", "Fowser Time", and "Don't Let Life Pass You By". CD

Merle HaggardOkie From Muskogee ... LP
Capitol, 1969. Very Good- ... $7.99
Let's get this straight. Merle Haggard SINGS "Okie From Muskogee" but he is not THE "Okie From Muskogee". Nevertheless, this is the record that put the honky in honky tonk. Merle sure pretended to not like hippies back in '69, and story has it he even refused an invitation to produce Gram Parson's GP album on the basis that Gram was just another damn dirty hippie. Of course that's just a story – Merle simply didn't fancy himself a producer. Okie From Muskogee is pretty much the definitive portrait of the Hag at his most reactionary, and if the ignorant politics of the title track gives us a few goosebumps along the way, it's well worth it to hear him perform some of his best tracks at the very peak of his career. Besides, what's an outlaw if he doesn't scare you a little? Many of the great ones are here, including "Mama Tried", "No Hard Times", "In the Arms Of Love", "If I Had Left It Up To You", "White Line Fever", "Blue Rock", "Okie From Muskogee", and a medley of "Swinging Doors", "I'm A Lonesome Fugitive", "Sing Me Back Home", and "Branded Man". Colemine, 2019. New Copy ... $11.99
The fantastic full-length group of The Harlem Gospel Travelers – a quartet trained on the male group gospel modes of older acts like the Soul Stirrers or Violinaires – but one who really shine strongly with a voice of their own, thanks to a set of all original material, and some nice funk-based currents in the instrumentation! The album's definitely a gospel record, but it resonates with those rare efforts on labels like Stax or Jewel, which could bring in musical currents from the secular world, to really help shape the spiritual message – opening things up way past the doors of the church, so that the positive spirit and sense of rebirth can spread out and touch the rest of the world. These guys are still very young, and we expect that we'll be hearing great things from them in years to come – but we're already plenty pleased with the results here, on tunes that include "Am I Doing Enough", "Oh Yes He Will", "Motherless Child", "Shine On Me", "Brighter Day", "Wash Me Lord", "On The Right Road", and "If You Can't Make It Through A Storm". Mick HoughtonBecoming Elektra – The True Story Of Jac Holzman's Visionary Record Label ... Book
Jawbone, 2010. New Copy ... $4.99 29.95
A wonderfully detailed story of one of the coolest record labels ever – a book that really gets at the huge range of folk, blues, psych, and other wonderful sounds issued by Elektra Records! The tome is massive – big enough to feature a lot of full color pictures, but with a much stronger emphasis on text than usual for this sort of volume – with an especially deep look into the early days of Zac Holzman, and his initial love of pre-rock modes before the bigger shift to more popular Elektra modes of the late 60s. The book is over 300 pages, and is past the halfway mark before The Doors even come into the picture – which really gives you an idea of the kind of detail involved, The book also features a full Elektra discography in the back – at least until the point at which Holzman left the label – and the whole thing's honestly one of the best accounts of a label's formation we've ever read. 304 pages, oversized, with some color images. A Chicago legend finally gets his due – the legendary Herb Kent, who was known as the "Cool Gent" on radio – and also ended up working on TV, and also playing a big part in the city's steppers scene in the 90s! Herb was a real trailblazer – part of a Chicago generation of black broadcasters who really opened the doors with a new sense of class, cool, and professionalism – a generation of which Kent is probably the best-remembered. This book tells Herb's story in all its details – from his early pre-radio days, to his great fame on-air, to his impact and interaction with the music, to some difficult moments in later years. The man himself tells his story, with help from writer David Smallwood – and our late mayor, Richard M Daley, even did the foreword. Hardcover, 302 pages, with some black and white images. Book

MillenniumPieces ... CD
Sonic Past/Voiceprint (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A nice, nice, nice collection of grooves from the Millennium vaults! As y'all already must know, the group's monumental Begin was the only official album by the Millenium AS the Millennium (Boettcher, Mallory, Salisbury and co. recorded other projects together and individually) leaving a wealth of great material in unreleased, rights-controlled limbo. Decades later some of this bristling, sunshine 60s pop euphoria is FINALLY seeing the light of day. The appropriately titled Pieces is a must for fans of the group and others that came before and after such as the Mamas & Papas, the post-Pet Sounds Wilsons, the Association and others. These comparably rough Millenium nuggets sort of feel like Smiley Smile to Begin's Pet Sounds; they may not be the definitive portrait of the group's greatness, but still an essential piece of the puzzle. These tracks that have languished behind closed doors for decades are better than most sunshine pop records that WERE released. It's the kind of thing that makes us wonder how many legacies in similarly restricted circumstances will be lost forever. Includes "Prelude", "To Claudia On Thursday", "It's You", "Good People", "Once Upon A Time", "A Younger Me", "Sunshine Girl", and lots more. 21 in all! CD

✨✧ MoonchildVoyager ... CD
Tru Thoughts (UK), 2017. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
If you like Fender Rhodes, you'll find plenty to love here – as Moonchild is just the duo of singer Amber Navran and keyboardist Andris Mattson – whose warm lines here are a perfect accompaniment to the vocals! There's a warm, organic vibe here that's maybe a bit different than some of the other work from the Tru Thoughts label in recent years – much more indie soul, although Navran's vocals are maybe a bit more understated, and sometimes let the keyboards take the lead! There's occasional other instrumentation on the record – acoustic piano, alto sax, and more – but the real charm comes from the interplay between voice and keyboards – on titles that include "Now & Then", "Change Your Mind", "Hideaway", "Cure", "6AM", "The List", "Doors Closing", and "Think Back". NicoEnd ... LP
Island, 1974. Near Mint- ... $69.99
One of Nico's darkest albums – and the kind of record we always suggest to those who doubt her genius! The incredibly spare set has Nico playing harmonium, which makes for a spooky off-kilter sound that really gives the record a somber approach – especially as the instrument sounds a heck of a lot like her voice – very dark and moody, with lots of offbeat tones! Nico also gets some hip help, too – as the set features Brian Eno on keyboards, and production by John Cale – who also plays a huge variety of odd instruments too. Titles include a sublime 9 minute reading of The Doors' "The End", one that makes the original seem like candy floss – plus the tracks "Secret Side", "Innocent & Vain", "Valley Of The Kings", "We've Got The Gold", and "It Has Not Taken Long". ✨✧ Mike NockOndas ... CD
ECM (Germany), 1982. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Mike Nock has always been a pianist with so many varied shades and styles to his talents – and here, he makes a rare ECM appearance in a set that's nicely different from most of his other albums of the 70s – maybe a bit more sensitive at times, but also maybe more freewheeling too – with these beautiful long tracks that have Nock really reveling in the tone of his instrument, but also working things with an inherent sense of rhythm too! The approach makes for these compelling spun-out tunes that pulsate beautifully – given subtle but strong support from Eddie Gomez on bass and Jon Christensen on drums. Titles include "Forgotten Love", "Ondas", "Visionary", "Doors", and "Land Of The Long White Cloud". CD

Billy Paul360 Degrees Of Billy Paul (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Philadelphia International/Big Break (UK), 1972. Used ... $9.99
Billy Paul at the height of his powers – able to capture the ears of the crossover audience, yet still stay very strongly on message – all with this righteous power that maybe makes Billy one of the hippest mainstream soul stars of the 70s! Gamble & Huff are at the helm, and arrangements at Sigma Sound are by Lenny Pakula, Norman Harris, and Bobby Martin – but throughout the whole thing, it's Billy's delivery that really sends the record over the top – the new sense of maturity he brings to the huge hit "Me & Mrs Jones", the funky vibe of "Am I Black Enough For You", and the wealth of great work on tracks that include "I'm Gonna Make It This Time", "I'm Just A Prisoner", "Brown Baby", and "Let's Stay Together". A masterpiece of sophisticated soul that not only had Billy crossing over big, but which opened whole new doors in the market for black male singers! CD also features a 9 minute version of "Me & Mrs Jones" – recorded live in London, 1973, plus the single versions of "Am I Black Enough For You?" & "Me & Mrs Jones". CD

Billy Paul360 Degrees Of Billy Paul/War Of The Gods ... CD
Philadelphia International/Vocalion (UK), 1972/1973. New Copy 2CD ... $19.99
Two ultra-hip albums from Billy Paul – back to back in a single set! First up is 360 Degrees Of Billy Paul – a record that features Billy Paul at the height of his powers – able to capture the ears of the crossover audience, yet still stay very strongly on message – all with this righteous power that maybe makes Billy one of the hippest mainstream soul stars of the 70s! War Of The Gods is a stone treasure from one of the greatest soul singers of the 70s – and a set you'll regularly find in the coolest of record collections from back in the day! Billy Paul was always one of the hippest talents on Philly International – mixing together soul and jazz influences with a deeper sense of spirituality, and long experience as a sophisticated vocalist. This album's one of his most sublime efforts – kind of a quasi-spiritual record with a similar high-concept approach to some of Marvin Gaye's work from the same time – really righteous, in ways that the Philly label didn't always hit – and which really goes past even most of Billy's already hip previous efforts. Gamble and Huff produced and wrote most of the record – including the two long tracks that make up side one, "I See The Light" and "War Of The Gods", the latter of which starts out slow and moody, then breaks out into a club groove. Other titles include the more standard soul tune "The Whole Town's Talking", plus "Thanks For Saving My Life" and "Peace Holy Peace". CD

ShindigIssue 96 ... Magazine
Shindig, 2019. New Copy ... $9.99
The 60s and 70s never looked this great back in the day – but that's what we love about Shindig, and the way it presents its writing on music from the past! This time around, Status Quo get a big cover feature, and the issue also features a new interview with the group's Francis Rossi – alongside other articles on Pentangle, Redd Kross, Incredible String Band, Syd Barrett, Caravan, and The Doors – plus contemporary sounds from Allah Las and Devendra Banhart! As usual, the presentation is great – and there's lots more good bits along the way – like stepping into detailed liner notes from a CD box set! Magazine

Weird Cry, 2018. New Copy ... $5.99 10.00
Really haunting duets from these two California reedman – both playing woodwinds in a variety of formats, but with an especially strong emphasis on saxophones! The tunes have this open, airy quality that's different than most free improvisations – more meditative and spiritual, with an inherent sense of structure – and often these flowing waves of energy that emanate nicely between both musicians. There's a vibe that's almost a bit like some of the more introspective music of the great Bob Downes – but with more of an American sense of soul, as well – and titles include "Wind In The Trees", "Nail In The Wall", "Picture Paintings", "Begin To Look Around", and "Long & Wide Doors". ✨✧ Steve TibbettsNorthern Song ... CD
ECM (Germany), 1982. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Steve Tibbetts is always a player who can effortlessly make soundscapes flow from his guitar – and here, he works with just the right of slight augmentation to his core acoustic work – using some added kalimba and tape loops – just a bit – and partnering up with the gentle percussionist Marc Anderson – who adds in a bit of congas and bongos to the set! Yet the record sounds light years away from any sort of guitar/percussion duo you might imagine – as things are very spacious, and very much in the territory of Tibbetts other sides for ECM – maybe inspired as much by some of the more freewheeling sonic experiments of the 70s post-prog, post-punk German and larger European world – than by the jazz that you'd expect on ECM. Titles include "The Big Wind", "Form", "Walking", "Aerial View", and "Nine Doors/Breathing Space". CD

✨✧ VariousHolding Things Together – The Merle Haggard Songbook ... CD
Ace (UK), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Merle Haggard isn't just one of the greatest country singers of all time – he's also a hell of a songwriter, too – one who emerged fully-formed into the glory of his Capitol Records years – releasing album after album that were full of amazing original compositions! Merle's own recordings of his songs have gone on to shape the sound of country music for decades – but right from the start, his music was grabbed up and interpreted by singers in a variety of different modes – sometimes as a way to make older artists sound hip, and more importantly as a way for younger acts to give ol' Hag the nod, and fortify their rootsy inclinations with a strong dose of straight country! This set does a great job of mixing up both sides of that coin, and throws in a few surprises along the way – finally giving Merle his due when it comes to the pen, on tracks that include "The Bottle Let Me Down" by Emmylou Harris, "I Must Be Somebody Else You've Known" by International Submarine Band, "Sing Me Back Home" by The Every Brothers, "Life In Prison" by The Byrds, "Kern River" by Dave Alvin, "Legend Of Bonnie & Clyde" by Tammy Wynette, "White Line Fever" by Flying Burrito Brothers, "Okie From Muskogee" by Roy Rogers, "Swinging Doors" by Jerry Lee Lewis, "Today I Started Loving You Again" by Wynn Stewart, "Rainbow Stew" by Country Joe McDonald, "Honky Tonk Night Time Man" by Lynyrd Skynyrd, "Just Because You Can't Be Mine" by Bettye Swann, and "Silver Wings" by The Knitters. Paris holds a very special place in the world of global music – once the center of a colonial empire that spread south across the continent of Africa – and later, home to a rich legacy of excellent recordings from the post-colonial years! ✨✧ VariousYou Need This – An Introduction To Black Saint & Soul Note Records 1975 to 1985 (3LP set) ... LP
Black Saint/BBE (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 3LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A tremendous look at one of the coolest jazz labels of all time – and one that has an especially strong focus on the more spiritual side of its music! The paired Black Saint and Soul Note labels came along from the Italian scene right at a time when so many other American companies were shutting their doors – former spiritual jazz powerhouses like Strata East, Impulse, and Black Jazz were moving beyond the music, or disappearing entirely – which made the role of Black Saint/Soul Note such a crucial one! The company came into the game at a time of boundless creativity in American jazz – and really captured a post-Coltrane generation that was brimming over with fire and new ideas, but just needed a place to find expression – which it did at the label, who recorded dozens of albums in the space of less than a decade, nearly all of which have gone onto become classics over the years. And while there's a side of the label that's much more free jazz and avant garde, the cuts here reflect a Black Saint/Soul Note that's just slightly inside – tunes that are still freewheeling, but also have a rhythmic core – and the kinds of open, soaring solos that were first inspired in the 60s generation of Coltrane and Shepp. The choice of cuts is great – similar to the others in the If Music series – and titles include "Mr Seven" by M'Booom, "Joycie Girl" by Don Pullen with Sam Rivers, "Il Giro Del Giorno In 80 Mondi" by Enrico Rava, "Oasis" by Hamiet Bluiett, "Confessin" by John Stubblefield, "Joobubie" by George Adams & Dannie Richmond, "Verde Que Eu Te Quero Ver" by Rava String Band, "Down Home In New York" by Archie Shepp, "BK" by Air, and "The Nagual Julian" by Billy Bang Sextet. Pure genius from a group who kept on growing strongly over the relatively short span of their career – maybe under-sung heroes at the time of their release, at least on this side of the Atlantic – but one of the few truly classic groups we can think of from the decade, at least with a recorded legacy this strong! VariousTime To Fly – Easy Listening From the KPM 1000 Series 1970 to 1976 ... CD
Vocalion (UK), Early 70s. New Copy ... $18.99
Soaring grooves from the legendary KPM Sound Library – a set of tunes that sparkles with all the charm and glamour of early 70s air travel! The title and cover really fit the spirit of the music here – as most of the tracks are upbeat and sky-flying – the sorts of numbers that go way beyond the sleepier side of easy listening, and really show the way that Easy maestros of the 70s were picking up plenty of funky elements in their music! There's no hard funk tracks here – as you might find on other sound library sets – but there's definitely an undercurrent of groove, thanks to some well-chosen rhythms, strong use of electric bass, and an overall sense of flow in most of the orchestrations – a feel that reminds us a lot of some of the excellent Brigade Mondaine compilations from a few years back. The package really offers up a different look than usual at KPM – and the tunes are as classy as anything we might have loved years ago, on the legendary Sound Library collections. Titles include "Sun Lover", "The Great Outdoors", "Husky Birdsong", and "Towards The Sun" by Keith Mansfield; "Holiday People", "Soft Memories", "Gentle Breeze", "Summer Dreams", "Summer Season", and "Friendly Faces" by James Clarke; "Paradise Found" by Dick Doerschuk, "Silk Stream" by David Gold, "Busy Spectacle" and "Fun In The Sun" by Neil Richardson, "Sunseekers" by David Lindup, and "A Tender Touch" by Steve Gray.
