Deniece WilliamsNiecy ... CD
Columbia/Reel Music, 1982. Used ... $14.99
Totally great work from Deniece Williams – still mostly free from the tinny pop of later years, and done in a solidly soulful style at Sigma Sound, with arrangements and production from the mighty Thom Bell! The groove is almost an update of 70s Philly, with traces of the maturing mellow side of Williams – all wrapped up with a good degree of confidence on the vocals, but enough tenderness to remind us of the greatness of Williams' roots. Deniece at her early 80s best! Titles include "I Believe In Miracles", "Waiting By The Hotline", "It's Gonna Take A Miracle", "Love Notes", "How Does It Feel", "Now Is The Time For Love", "Waiting" and "A Part Of Love". CD
(Out of print.)

✨✧ Deniece WilliamsFree – The Columbia/Arc Recordings 1976 to 1988 (8CD set) ... CD
Columbia/Soulmusic.com (UK), Late 70s/1980s. New Copy 8 CDs ... Out Of Stock
An insanely big collection of work from the great Deniece Williams – eleven full albums, plus bonus tracks more – all to sum up a decade in which she was one of the strongest forces going in mainstream soul! Williams got her start as Deniece Chandler on the Chicago scene – where she had a vocal range that rivaled that of Minnie Riperton, which had her initially stepping out here in a mode that's a bit similar on the first album or two in the set – working with sophisticated soul production that really brings out the best in her sound! As things move on, she also showcases the way she can wrap that fantastic voice around a catchy groove and a playful hook – a quality that made Williams one of the surprising crossover soul stars as the 80s moved in, with a big run of hits that are all included here on albums that still represent a well-balanced blend of chart tracks and some deeper full length material. The set features the full albums Niecy, Songbird, When Love Comes Calling, My Melody, a second Niecy album, I'm So Proud, Let's Hear It For The Boy, Hot On The Trail, Water Under The Bridge, and Good As It Gets – plus an album of duets with Johnny Mathis, titled That's What Friends Are For. The final CD is filled with bonus tracks – single mixes, remixes, and more! CD

Jaki GrahamJaki Graham – 35th Anniversary Collection (Heaven Knows/Breaking Away/bonus tracks) (4CD set) ... CD
Cherry Pop (UK), Mid 80s. New Copy 4CD ... $24.99 40.99
A huge package of work from Jaki Graham – a set that features two full albums' worth of music, and even more than that in bonus material! First up is Heaven Knows – a really lovely little record from Jaki Graham – a set that's unabashedly turned towards the poppier side of the soul spectrum, but with the kind of care and class that made Jaki one of the standout acts of her generation! There's a mix of catchiness and maturity going on here – almost as if Deniece Williams and Phyllis Hyman got together and found a way to mix the best elements of their styles – carried forward with a style that has Graham shining equally well on the more playful numbers as on the serious ones. Titles include "Hold On", "The Facts Of Love", "Round & Round", "Heaven Knows", "Stay The Way You Are", and "What's The Name Of Your Game". Next is Breaking Away – a record with a wonderful balance between hook-heavy tunes and more serious moments – the kind of songs that offset Graham's chart appeal with a deeper presentation that echoes some of the stronger voices of the quiet storm generation of the 80s, while also pointing the way towards some of the crossover soul to come. Titles include "Set Me Free", "Breaking Away", "Still In Love", "Let's Get Blue", "Step Right Up", "Love Me Tonight", "Mated" with David Grant, and "Luv 2 Much". 4CD set features 34 more bonus tracks – all sorts of remixes, single versions, and other cuts from 12" singles and other sources from the time! ShalamarHeartbreak (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Solar/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1984. Used ... $18.99
Very catchy work from Shalamar – a trio who were one of the most hit-oriented acts in the Solar Records stable – but who really hit their crossover heights on this mid 80s set! The group draw heavily on rock and pop modes for the beats and basslines of the set – making that sort of shift that Deniece Williams and some other contemporaries were hitting at the time – maybe inspired a bit by the success of Thriller, or just following their own muse in search of a way to update their sound! Titles include "Amnesia", "Dancing In The Sheets", "Don't Get Stopped In Beverly Hills", "Melody (An Erotic Affair)", "My Girl Loves Me", "Deceiver", and "Whenever You Need Me". CD features bonus tracks – "Dancing In The Streets (12" Jellybean rmx)", "Don't Get Stopped In Beverly Hills (12" special mix)", "My Girl Loves Me (12" ext rmx)", "Amnesia (12" edit)", and "Dancing In The Sheets (inst)". VariousFor The Love Of You – A Selection Of Soulful Lovers Rock Covers ... CD
Athens Of The North (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $12.99 16.99
A really fantastic idea for a compilation – a set that brings together obscure covers of funk and soul tunes – mostly from the late 70s/early 80s generation, and mostly in a laidback, soul-stepping style! If you're a lover of rare groove, you'll recognize plenty of the songs, but not the versions – as these are all pretty darn rare and obscure, usually cut by indie artists who barely got any circulation for their recordings at the time – in the best tradition of super-rare work we usually expect from the Athens Of The North label! And while the title might indicate that the set features tracks in a lovers rock mode, the approach is maybe more indie soul overall – with only a hint of reggae inspiration in some of the grooves. The package features new takes on songs by Leon Ware, Mtume, Deniece Williams, Lowrell, and others – with titles that include "Rocking You Eternally" by Peter Hunningale, "For The Love Of You" by Simplicity, "What You Won't Do For Love" by Michael Gordon, "Do Me Baby" by Family Love, "Don't Let Love Get You Down" by Pure Silk, "Mellow Mellow Ride On" by Misses Misty, "Body Fusion" by Michael Prophet, and "Outstanding" by Al Charles. ✨✧ VariousWonderland – The Spirit Of Earth Wind & Fire ... CD
Expansion (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
An amazing document of the wide wide reach of Earth Wind & Fire at the end of the 70s – that joyous, righteous spirit that not only flowed through their own music, but seemed to touch most of the soul and jazz world as well! The set's a much-needed look at the way that energy from EWF flowed out to so many other folks too – as the group's tunes were frequently covered, its members frequently worked with other artists, and Maurice White frequently lent his production talents to others in the studio! The package is overflowing with greatness from the great ones – a killers set of tracks that include "Got To Find My Way" by Pockets, "Tequila Mockingbird" by Dee Dee Bridgewater, "Let's Get Together" by Paulinho DaCosta, "City Lights" by Valerie Carter, "Ancient Source" by Caldera, "Answer To My Prayer" by Alton McClain & Destiny, "Let Love Groove Me" by Syliva St James, "The Boy I Left Behind" by Deniece Williams, "Glow Love" by Mighty Clouds Of Joy, "And I Do" by Abraham Laboriel, "I Waited" by Blue Magic, "Dream Come True" by Stargard, and "Theme For Relana" by Gene Harris.
